The origins of this most romantic of holidays are rather obscured to history and legend. It dates to the 5th century and was most likely adapted from the Roman holiday Lupercalia, itself based on the cleansing holiday of Februa. Lupercalia was a holiday for shepherds, and young men would run nude through the streets. Women would present their hands to be struck in the belief that it would aid or encourage pregnancy and would place their name on slips of paper into a jar to be chosen for the bachelors, often resulting in marriages.… Read the rest
