Saint Valentine’s Day, Super Burgundy Sales and Bodegas Rio Elorza Verum

A Rosé Champagne by Any Other Name

“Champagne is the only wine that leaves a woman beautiful after drinking it” –Madame de Pompadour, favorite mistress to Louis XV and lover of Moet Champagne

The origins of this most romantic of holidays are rather obscured to history and legend. It dates to the 5th century and was most likely adapted from the Roman holiday Lupercalia, itself based on the cleansing holiday of Februa. Lupercalia was a holiday for shepherds, and young men would run nude through the streets. Women would present their hands to be struck in the belief that it would aid or encourage pregnancy and would place their name on slips of paper into a jar to be chosen for the bachelors, often resulting in marriages.

The holiday took on its current name in honor of the saint, though the Catholic Church recognizes three different martyred saints named Valentine or similar. Legend has it that a man named Valentine performed marriages in secret after the Emperor Claudius II banned marriages since unmarried men made better soldiers. Claudius put Valentine to death. From prison, Valentine was rumored to have sent a love note to a young woman signed “From your Valentine.” Saint Valentine’s Day is said to be celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate either the death or burial of the legendary figure. It was officially decreed February 14th by Pope Gelasius at the end of the 5th century. Its development into a day of feasting was aided by Geoffroy Chaucer in the 14th century.

The common (and in this author’s opinion, beloved) tradition of sending small tokens of love and affection began in the 17th century. Today, these gifts are most commonly cards, chocolates, flowers and Champagne. In honor of this holiday, we have put together a list of rose Champagnes.

“It pairs with fish, with meat, with dessert. And when you open a bottle of rosé champagne, people understand that you are spoiling them,” French chef Eric Ripert

Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial Rose NV 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “(roughly 45% pinot noir, 35% pinot meunier and 20% chardonnay): Bright orange-pink. Spicy cherry, red berries, blood orange and five-spice powder on the perfumed nose. Fleshy but dry, boasting excellent energy to its bitter cherry, redcurrant and floral pastille flavors. Finishes smooth and fleshy, with very good breadth and cling. The turnaround over the last few years at this house, now under the guidance of chef de cave Benoit Gouez, has been remarkable.” JR

Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Brut Rose 2004 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Much more typical of the year, 2004 Brut Grand Vintage Rosé is pure chalk, rhubarb, pomegranate and rose petals. The flavors possess striking delineation and nuance in a style that is all about tension. I very much like the sense of energy here. Stylistically, the Rosé is quite a bit more focused than the Blanc in 2004, with fewer oxidative overtones and plenty of drive. This is a hugely appealing Champagne from Moët Chandon. 2014 – 2024.” AG

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame Brut Rose 2004 750ML ($319.95) $219 special, 6 bottles available

Powerfully scented aromas of cherry pit, raspberry and potpourri, with exotic Asian spice and incense qualities building in the glass. Wound up and tightly focused, with spicy red and dark berry flavors and tangy citrus zest and floral pastille qualities gaining power on the long, mineral-driven finish. Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Bright onion skin color. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes red berries, cherry pit, smoky minerals and dried flowers. Understated strawberry and orange flavors are dry and lively, with zesty minerality adding cut. Firm and spicy, finishing with very good focus and thrust. This Champagne received no dosage at all.”

Deutz Cuvee William Rose 2000 750ML ($269.95) $219 special 5 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright pink. Pungent, expansive aromas of dried red berries and cherry, with a brighter suggestion of blood orange and a hint of anise. Deeply pitched citrus and red berry flavors are complicated by notes of candied rose and white pepper and gain spiciness with air. Finishes on a refreshingly bitter citrus pith note, with excellent persistence. Seems fully mature but there’s no rush to drink this.”

Dom Perignon Rose Brut 2003 750ML ($349.95) $219 special 21 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 points “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts in this harmonious version. A delicate bead caresses the mouth, while flavors of currant pâte de fruit, dried apricot, pastry and pickled ginger expand on the palate. Subtly floral, with a fine frame of acidity driving this to the mouthwatering finish of smoky mineral and dried fruit. Drink now through 2030.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2003 Dom Pérignon Rosé is another wine that has come together quite nicely over the last few months. Given the exuberance and sheer vinosity of the 2000 and the 2002, along with the ripeness of the year, and the heft of the 2003 Blanc, I expected the 2003 Rosé to be a much bigger wine. Instead, it is surprisingly delicate and medium in body. Dried flowers, crushed raspberries and sweet herbs waft from the glass in a Rosé that is all about sensuality. With time in the glass, the richness of the fruit becomes more pronounced, while the tannin from the red grapes is also noticeable.”

Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Light orange-pink. High-pitched, incisive aromas of fresh red berries, blood orange, white pepper and rose, with a strong mineral component. Dry and focused in the mouth, showing noteworthy intensity to the zesty strawberry, raspberry and bitter rhubarb flavors. The mineral and floral notes repeat on the long, sappy, penetrating finish, which features an intense spicy quality. I love this vibrant, pure style of rose Champagne.”

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Light orange. Spice-accented aromas and flavors of red berries and candied flowers, with a subtle mineral note adding vivacity. A. Margaine Rose Brut NV 750ML ($59.95) $44 special 4 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Dark pink. Ripe red berries, cherry pit and tangerine on the deeply scented nose. In a fleshy, weighty style, offering intense raspberry and blood orange flavors that gain sweetness on the back half. Shows very good clarity and power on the supple finish, which leaves a trace of toasty lees behind. Just under half of the pinot here was added in the form of still red wine.”

Christophe Mignon Brut Rose Pur Meunier NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 special 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 92 points “Mignon’s NV Pur Meunier Rosé is quite pretty. Crushed flowers, spices, sweet herbs and cranberries are all very much alive in the glass. Lifted and precise, the Rosé is absolutely gorgeous. The blend of equal parts vintages 2010 and 2011 works nicely here. Some of the 2011 greenness is evident, but not at all overpowering. Dosage is 6 grams per liter.”

Pol Roger Brut Rose 2004 750ML ($149.95) $119 special 4 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Light, bright orange. Intense, spice-accented aromas of candied orange, redcurrant and fresh flowers, with sneaky mineral and leesy notes. Supple and expansive, offering vibrant citrus fruit and red berry flavors with complicating notes of cinnamon and pear skin. Finishes silky and long, with resonating spiciness and excellent clarity.” ST
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2004 Brut Rose Extra Cuvee de Reserve is quite fruity and vinous at first but then the minerality kicks in, giving the wine its energy and sense of focus. Crushed flowers, spices and mint unfold in the glass, adding complexity and nuance. Overall, this is a fairly delicate, feminine style of Rose that can be enjoyed as an aperitif or alongside a meal. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.”

Tarlant Rose Zero Brut Nature NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 special 5 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Tarlant’s NV Brut Nature Rosé is even better. All of the elements come together beautifully in the glass as this powerful, precise wine takes shape over time. The wine shimmers across the palate with layers of beautifully articulated, perfumed fruit, showing marvelous precision and balance. The Brut Nature Rosé is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir based on 2006 with the addition of reserve wines.”

Vilmart Cuvee Rubis Brut NV 750ML ($99.95) $69 special 17 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “(90% pinot noir and 10% chardonnay, from 2010 and 2009; aged on its lees for 15 months and disgorged in September, 2012): Pale pink. High-pitched raspberry, floral pastille and spicecake aromas are deepened by notes of iodine and anise. Silky and seamless on the palate, offering intense red berry flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Finishes sappy and long, with exotic spice and floral nuances and lingering minerality.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Smoke and graphite notes underscore the ripe strawberry and cherry fruit in this lacy, finely meshed rosé Champagne, accented by ginger biscuit and ground clove notes. Fresh and mouthwatering, presenting a lasting, chalky finish.”

Vilmart Grand Cellier d’Or Rubis Brut 2009 750ML ($179.95) $149 special 17 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous Media 95 points “Bright orange. Racy, mineral-accented aromas of strawberry, blood orange and tea rose, plus a subtle note of toasty lees. Bitter berry skin and citrus pith flavors give way to deeper raspberry in the middle, with chalky minerality adding spine and cut. Dry, focused and concentrated, finishing with superb power and length and lingering mineral and floral notes.” JR
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Vilmart’s 2009 Brut Premier Cru Grand Cellier Rubis is fabulous. A rich, deep rosé, the 2009 is all about texture. Layers of fruit open up in the glass in a silky, aromatically expressive Champagne loaded with class. The radiant, resonant style, so typical of the year, is on full display. The Grand Cellier Rubis remains one of the most polished, compelling wines in Champagne. The 2009 is another drop-dead gorgeous showing from Vilmart and proprietor Laurent Champs. The Grand Cellier Rubis is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.”

Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier
48 Hour Sale – Ends Friday at Midnight

“Of all the vegetable kingdom, only the vine makes/ the true savour of the earth understandable to us.” –Credited to Colette from J.F Mugnier

In the 1880s, Francois Mugnier (known as Frederic) founded a company selling aperitifs, absinthes, cassis, liqueurs and aromatized wine in Dijon. During the phylloxera crisis, he purchased vineyards in Chambolle from the Marey-Monge family, eventually purchasing the Chateau de Chambolle-Musigny and the Clos de la Mare vineyard. Many years later, the domaine was temporarily splintered. His descendent Marcel, grandfather of the current owner Frederic, and Marcel’s son Jacques-Frederic had to purchase back parcels of their family domaine after several relatives left portions to their various mistresses. Like many landowners in Burgundy, they also faced difficulties ending strict leasing contracts of their lands that heavily favored the renters.

Frederic, the current owner, began his adulthood as an engineer. He eventually took over the family domaine. After early attempts at following the high extract, beefy wine fashion of the eighties and nineties, Frederic has moved toward the more elegant style his grapes seem to naturally express. In 2004, Faiveley’s lease of Clos de la Marechale ended and Domaine Mugnier expanded overnight from 4 to 14 hectares.

Frederic expanded the winery’s capacity to meet the domaine’s expansion and hired four employees. The domaine is not strictly organic, but is industrial fertilizer-, herbicide- and insecticide-free. Frederic is against full certification because it would limit him to copper sulfate treatments for downy mildew, which builds up as a toxin in the soil and does not break down. The grapes are hand-sorted and completely destemmed before the whole berries are placed into the fermentation vat. The wines are aged for a year and a half in oak and bottled unfiltered and unfined.

The deep, sappy and simply gorgeous nose wafts from the glass in a mélange of black cherries, dark berries, woodsmoke, game, espresso, fresh herbs, stunningly complex soil tones and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite plush on the attack, with great mid-palate depth, laser-like focus, ripe, firm tannins and simply stunning length and grip on the still very young finish. Profound juice….94+”
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright, deep red. Initially explosive aromas and flavors of cherry, menthol, incense and spices subsided in favor of blueberry, crushed stone and peppermint tea: very Bonnes-Mares! Wonderfully silky and scented in the mouth, displaying very good breadth but a light touch. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins and excellent length and lift. Bodega Rio Elorza

For much of its winemaking history, wines from Argentina were produced mainly for local consumption, but more and more in recent history the industry has begun focusing on quality production that has gained international marketability. The region of Patagonia is located in the southernmost part of Argentina, which also happens to be the coolest part of this country. This is quite advantageous for the winemaking region, allowing a slow and lengthy ripening of the grapes, due to the high elevations ranging from 900-1600ft above sea level.

An outstanding representative of Patagonia is the region of Río Negro, which has a unique landscape allowing Patagonian wines to really show their well-defined personality. The wines show a nice balance of alcohol, tannin structure and acidity, resulting from the slow ripening of fruit, which also adds complexity. All these characteristics grant Patagonia wines elegance, intense flavors and aromatics, along with a purity of environment. In addition to these features, the value of these wines is exceptional, contributing to the region achieving worldwide recognition.

Verum is a small boutique winery with 45 acres of high-density vineyards in the Alto Valle del Rio Negro, Patagonia. With internationally renowned Alberto Antonini and locals Mariano Vignoni and Agustín Lombroni as winemakers, Verum has been a shining example of the amazing winemaking potential in Patagonia. Production is focused on premium wines, using only grapes from its own vineyards. Their experience and understanding of this unique area, along with Marcelo Casazza’s precise vineyard management, impart great personality to the wines. All work is done manually with very little intervention, producing the highest expression of Patagonian terroir and wines, that are celebrated both for their vibrancy and fresh fruit character.
