Ventoux:

Hidden Treasures of the Rhone

When you read the words “Southern Rhone” you probably think of Chateauneuf du Pape: rocky fields or hills that are warm and produce big, rich wines.  What if we told you there was an unexplored area of the Rhone which looked different but also produced powerful wines which were undervalued because of their home turf?

The Ventoux is a massive swath of the Rhone, east of the river and on the other side of the Dentelles from Gigondas.  It sits between the heart of the Southern Rhone and Provence, and the wines have that wild, slightly untamed character that you often find in wines from the mountainous regions of Provence.

Magnums of Duval-Leroy Femme de Champagne

True to its name, Duval-Leroy’s ‘Femme de Champagne” is the brainchild of Carol Duval-Leroy and Sandrine Logette-Jardin. The former is one of Champagne’s few female Presidents, the latter one of its few female Head Winemakers. This is their rarest bottling, only made in the most spectacular years (just three vintages were made in the 1990s), and we’re thrilled to have sourced a limited quantity from the underrated 2000 vintage.

It was a year that delighted Duval-Leroy with top quality fruit and the decision to make “Femme” was easy.

Piaggia: Newly Arrived

Centuries before ‘Super Tuscan,’ there was Carmingano…

“If there is one estate that embodies the potential of Carmignano, Piaggia just might be it.” – Antonio Galloni

What is Carmingano? One of the greatest regions in Tuscany that no one’s ever heard of. This classic appellation was growing international varieties such as Cab Sauv way back before the signing of the Declaration of Independence—basically making their wines the original Super Tuscans.

A Quick, Important Note About Tariffs

By this time, we hope you’ve seen the news that the Office of the US Trade Representative is considering a 100% tariff on all European wines. This comes after the 25% tariff that went into effect in October on some wines.  If this tariff comes into effect, you will be directly affected. We’re very certain that most of you would not want to pay for trade disagreements regarding Boeing, Airbus, Google, Facebook and other international tech and social media companies. These have nothing to do with wine.

Evening Land Subscriber Special

We’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with the Evening Land wines here at Vinopolis—though not out of a lack of love for the wines themselves.  No, while we’ve always admired and enjoyed the wines Evening Land has made, the winery has occasionally taken exception to our low prices on their wines. Luckily for us and you, the new vintage of these beauties is back and we’re offering you an unlisted Subscriber Special on these wines while they’re pre-arrival.

Evening Lands was founded by an all-star team, headlined by Dominique Lafon, who secured a long term lease on the fabled Seven Springs vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills.
