Fondreche’s Ventoux Stunners

If you love big, powerful red wines and you’ve never had the top wines of Domaine de Fondreche, you need to rectify that situation soon.  These are some of the gutsiest, most expressive wines in the Rhone, with incredible critical praise and a price tag that’s equivalent to mid-tier CdP.  From their mostly Syrah “Divergente,” which puts a lot of $80 Hermitage to shame, to their “Il Etait Une Fois,” a Chateauneuf destroyer, their wines represent excellent values and compelling drinking experiences.

Stock Up on a Very Goodfellow Sale

Marcus Goodfellow is one of the premier winemakers in Oregon.  He founded Matello wines, his original label, in 2002 and hasn’t looked back since, making wines that have continually improved—both in bottle and from vintage to vintage.  These are profound wines, both white and red, that are made in a style that’s distinctly savory—no fruit bombs here.  Rather, we love them for their coiled power and Burgundian structure.

Whistling Ridge is Marcus Goodfellow’s Cros Parantoux—a site he seems to have particular affinity with, producing exceptional wines.

Timothy Malone Medici Vineyard Riesling, Chehalem Mountains 2015 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points
“EDITOR’S CHOICE. This is a deep, intense and focused wine sourced from 40-year-old vines. Its 28 g/l of residual sugar is all but buried in bright acids, creating tension and depth. Grapefruit, lime and pineapple flavors burst through, making this highly cellar-worthy wine irresistible already.”

2016 Vouette e Sorbee Fidele

We saw overwhelming demand for the 2016-base V&S Fidele. If you’re not familiar with the producer, a long-time favorite at the shop, here’s your quick primer: After some gentle nudging from Anselme Selosse, Champagne grape grower and recent convert to biodynamics, Bertrand Gautherot, decided to produce estate Champagnes from his vineyard holdings. The main wine of the estate is Fidele.

A Top Value Super Tuscan

Previously Sold Out, Now Back in Stock

Sette Ponti makes some of the finest Super Tuscans out there.  While they’re best known for Oreno, their top-end wine, the wine of note in most years is their value-priced Crognolo.  Made with every bit the same care as the flashier Oreno, Crognolo’s Sangiovese dominant blend provides a beautiful drink-now option at less than half the price of the flagship wine.  The 2017 just re-arrived (after quickly selling out the first go-round) and looks to be an absolute knockout—the warm year bestowed it with more fruit and softer tannins than usual, making this value an early drinker, as well.
