An Email Subscriber Sale on Charles Heidsieck

The Small but Grande Marque

Arriving Wednesday, June 24th and On Sale Now!

Charles Heidsieck is one of the great, historic houses of Champagne, but because of their small size they tend to be overlooked.  They make wines that are notable for their richness and texture, incorporating long aging on the lees and significant amounts (40+%) of older (reserve) wines in their NV blends.

Domaine Rollin’s Secret-Star White Burgundy

Domaine Rollin remains a bit of an open secret in Burgundy—great producer, imported by one of the best palates out there (Rosenthal), but resolutely not-talked about as much as they should be.  From a quick survey of some great Burgundy palates, it seems like the sharpest buyers know and buy these wines, but no one is willing to tell their friends—the prices are still too reasonable to let the secret out.

Champagne Lilbert

Lilbert is one of the best kept secrets in Champagne.  Drawing from Grand Cru vineyards in the Cote des Blancs, Lilbert makes blanc de blancs wines from some excellent vineyards in a finessed, minerally style.  Their wines have notable brioche-y character, as well, due to the large quantities of reserve wines in their various blends.  At the prices asked, these are wines that massively over-deliver, especially on our subscriber special…

Scavino 2015

Subscriber-Only Special

“Scavino is one of the great, established families in Piedmont…the Scavino Barolos are defined by their textural richness and opulence. When they are young, the wines are decidedly powerful and intense, but they have also proven to age exceptionally well.” –Antonio Galloni

Paolo Scavino is once again one of the top producers in Barolo. At one point, Scavino was considered one of the preeminent producers of modernist Barolo, favoring barriques, exceptionally short macerations and a style that emphasized winemaking over terroir.  These days, though, they’ve shed their overtly modernist ways, moving their style towards a more traditional approach.

Gulfi’s Best Vintage Yet: 2016

This is the estate that focused everyone’s attention on the need to bottle single-contrada Nero d’Avolas – something that, unlike on Etna, has only started to take hold recently on the rest of the island with grape varieties other than Carricante or the Nerellos….More importantly, perhaps, is that Gulfi has made some of its best wines ever these last two years, and especially so in 2016, which is admittedly a fantastic vintage in Sicily.
