Both Renée Saint-Amour and Grant Coulter were raised to appreciate Oregon wines, despite hailing from out of state. Their mutual interest and love of adventure brought them to the Valley. Grant worked with Hamacher before joining Beaux Freres and eventually becoming their winemaker under Mike Etzel’s tutelage. Today, Grant is the winemaker at Flâneur, an incredible estate that releases beautiful and utterly delicious wines similarly focused on sustainability.
 
Together, this wife-and-husband team launched Hundred Suns as a boutique winery and eventually scrapped together enough cash to purchase Breaker Vineyard, a fifty-year-old site in the Eola-Amity Hills and now home to them, their kids, and their winery. They do everything by hand, from crafting their wines, distributing in town, and even their stunning label-design.
 
Hundred Suns was named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, their Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley. These are unique, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley including one of our favorites, Bednarik. This vineyard flies under the radar a bit, but Ken Wright fans from the 90’s know the site well. Renée and Grant’s version offers beautiful, crunchy structure allied to a beguiling mixture of black cherry fruit and savory overtones. It’s a cool-climate vineyard, even for Oregon, and that shows in the brightness on the finish, alongside its great power.
 
Anyone who’s loved the Beaux Freres or Flâneur wines in the past needs to pay attention to what this husband-and-wife team are doing at Hundred Suns. This project represents one of the most exciting new labels in the Willamette Valley. Winery note “Uniquely situated in the Dundee Hills this dry farmed site boasts deep, well-
drained Jory soils consisting of weathered basalt. A cool, wet spring started the season and restricted yields. Above average summer temperatures and a warm fall allowed the small clusters to hang until October 15^th. The fruit was fermented in two small lots: one fully destemmed and the other with partial whole cluster. Once the wild yeast completed fermentation, the wine was gently decanted off the skins after 20 days. The wine was aged in oak for 11 months and bottled in late August 2023. Brilliant cherry and raspberry aromas compliment the bright acid and delicate tannins.”
Grant’s note “The Carson Phillips Vineyard is planted in the north western part of the Dundee Hills.  It’s a southeast exposure but is blocked a little to the east so somewhat cooler.  Classic Jory soils and planted in 2000 so it’s got some years on it.   Deep red fruits, raspberries and strawberries.  Very delicious.”

Grant’s note “The Lone Feather Vineyard is an old own rooted site in the McMinnville AVA.  Originally planted for Myron Redfern at Amity, it slipped into obscurity for many years.  I met the new owners Warren and Jennifer Feather a few years back and fell in love with the site.  Pommard and Wadenswil, planted on rocky volcanic soils.  Dry farmed, it’s an intense wine of deep blue fruits, licorice and spice. Probably my favorite wine of the 2022 vintage right now.”
Winery note “The Lone Feather vineyard is planted on rocky basalt soils on the edge the McMinnville AVA. Cool, coastal breezes and rocky volcanic soil helped to focus the deep flavors of these own rooted vines established in the late 1980’s. Deep garnet hues precede flavors that burst with blue fruit, crushed rock, and mint. Under the stewardship of Warren and Jennifer Feater, this site is meticulously farmed with the goal of sustaining this legacy vineyard for years to come. Fermented with indigenous yeast and partial whole bunch, our two-barrel blend was bottled in late August 2023, unfined and unfiltered.”

A diverse mixture of Pinot Noir planted on these marine sedimentary soils weathered a cold spring that led into a warm sumer and gorgeous fall. Picked on October 8^th, the pristine fruit was fermented 33% whole cluster over 22 days. Brimming with dark cherry, plum licorice, and sweet smells of pipe tobacco, this wine will best be consumed 2024-2035.”

Treated in a traditional fashion, we let native yeast slowly finish fermentation. The wines were pressed and aged in a combination of 20% terracotta and 80% neutral barrels. This wine brims with spice, red cranberries, layers of perfumed licorice, and floral notes.”

Handpicked on September 20th & 26th, the grapes were broken up into five lots with varying percentages of whole cluster. Grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in oak for 11 months. If you’re not familiar with Ca’ del Baio, know that they are a traditionally-styled, family-owned Barbaresco estate in Treiso that’s been crafting wine for over 150 years. Their vineyards are farmed sustainably with biodiversity in mind and no synthetic fertilizers or herbicides. In the winery, they natural yeast fermentation and minimal sulfur for a purer expression of the fruit.
 
The wines undergo a long and slow maceration before aging in neutral Slavonian oak boti, resulting in fresh and aromatic wines with a rich complexity and glorious tannic structure.
 
The Autinbej is a blend of the sunniest parcels in the crus of Treiso, Marcarini, and Ferrerre. It’s typically bold and intense with a ripe tannic profile. The Asili cru bottling includes the estate’s oldest vines. This is a long-lived wine with an ultra-classic profile. Finally, we have the Vallegrande. This is their most elegant bottling sourced from vines that surround the winery.

The Coutier family has called the Grand Cru Champagne village of Ambonnay home for over four hundred years. Their Champagnes display the power and richness of the village—and at prices so low it might make you second guess their quality. But that would be a mistake: the wines of R.H. Coutier are perpetually some of the most loved and admired Champagnes in the shop. The volume we can offer is a bold statement for a producer that only releases around 5,000 cases total each vintage. We sell dozens of cases of their “Tradition,” Blanc de Blancs, and even vintage bottlings every year. And plenty makes it to our personal cellars.
 
What makes this particular Champagne so admired? Aside from the affordability and history, the farming and style contribute to their fame chez Vinopolis. These are true Grower Champagnes: the family works exclusively with estate holdings all within the village of Ambonnay. Vines in their holdings average around 40 years of age and, as of 2023, are now certified organic (though the family has never used herbicides).
 
Stylistically, the wines have the natural power of Ambonnay offset the lighter, lacier textures imparted by their remarkably high amounts of Chardonnay. Only 2/3s of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, imparting a brightness to the wine and a balance to its opulence. These are wines that manage to fuse contradictory features in a thrilling, crowd-pleasing way—at a very crowd-pleasing price.
 
Their single-vineyard wine, La Pierre Aux Larrons, is barrel fermented, adding richness and nuance. It is 100% Chardonnay from a vineyard planted by Henri Coutier in 1948. That was only two years after he became the first person to plant Chardonnay in the village. The 2016 vintage on offer is glorious and impactful, while retaining the distinctly charming nature of all of their Champagnes.
 
As a Grower producer, they’ve flown under the radar with professional reviewers and Champagne aficionados. On the plus side, that means the wines are undervalued. On the negative? The wines are woefully underappreciated, but we’re here to correct that error with our three-day sale. With a ton of complexity and class for the money, it’s one to stock up on for your next celebration… or maybe just your average Tuesday.

In Burgundy, as in the cellars of Burgundy collectors, there is an illusion that time stops and that Burgundy never changes. Honoring tradition and family history is very important, but it is difficult to preserve those deep family holdings across the beautiful slopes if you’re not able to sell wine. Thus, change comes to us all and to some in ways that will benefit both the new Burgundy drinker and the long-term collector. Here is how change came to Faiveley.
 
The wines of Faiveley, while always of superlative quality, historically were known for their potential in the cellar and not always for their immediate approachability. Concentrated, stern, and ageable were the most common descriptors in reviews. It could be why the wines are more likely to find a home in their native country than is typical for Burgundy producers: the French people and restaurants have more patience and inclination for cellaring!
 
It took the new generation, a team of siblings, Erwan and Eve Faiveley, to ease the winery into modernity. The wines became softer and more approachable in their youth, while still offering the potential to age with grace.
 
This modern incarnation of Faiveley began in 2007 when Francois Faiveley retired and his children became the seventh generation to manage the Domaine. The siblings have transformed the winemaking, holding onto the age-worthiness that the domaine was known for, but also bringing out more youthful charm.
 
Even small changes to the style of a domaine that dates back to 1825 is considered revolutionary in Burgundy, and there were a number of people who were afraid that the transition would ruin one of the anchors of the region. Fortunately, when the first wines of the new generation started appearing in 2007 the results were reassuringly delicious, and the changes not nearly as drastic as anticipated.
 
In general, the whites are still simultaneously silky and muscular, the reds still exceptionally pure and elegant. And all the while many of the wines were showing heightened aromatics and a softer feel on the palate. Village level wines were easy to enjoy immediately, and even most Premier Cru wines were showing themselves well after a brief introduction of air. The Grand Cru holdings were still built for the long haul, perhaps not quite as dense as under François, but reds still powerful and with substantial silky tannins, and whites crammed full of intense minerality, floral notes and ripe fruits.
 
The siblings have also expanded their holdings and renovated the southern winery in Mercurey to bring the Côte Chalonnaise wines up to the quality standards of their more famous brethren in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The domaine added temperature-controlled fermentation vats and gravity flow for vinification, a gentler vinification process. Across the board, the overall quality levels are higher than ever, aided, too, by the shift to organic farming.
 
While widely thought of as a negociant, Faiveley’s domaine bottlings account for a far larger share of its production—a testament to the quality-mindedness that has driven the producer to new heights. (On the bottles, negociant wines are labeled “Joseph Faiveley” vs the “Domaine Faiveley” bottlings from the estate vineyards). They hold ten hectares of Grand Cru including the iconic monopole Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru, which the family has held since 1874. Today, Faiveley is one of the largest and most important landowners in Burgundy. 
 
While there are changes afoot, the wines are still true to their roots. From vintage to vintage you’ll find that Faiveley will make among the best examples available. When you find your favorites, buy with confidence. When we’re asked by new collectors who are looking for the Burgundies that they could stash away, yet not regret opening in a moment of weakness, we will turn to Faiveley more often than not. You can experience the wines in their youth, getting a glimpse of the promise to come.
