Vintage Port

Port has been a staple in every cellar since its inception in the 17th century. Not only delicious but also one of the most age-worthy and collectible wine styles in the world, it’s a mainstay on auction blocks from New York to Hong Kong.

Unlike other styles that blend multiple vintages, Vintage Ports come from a handful of the best barrels from a singular harvest. In order for a vintage to be declared it must pass three different evaluations beginning with the individual houses. The next step involves a vote amongst the houses to determine if there’s consensus to declare a vintage. Finally, the houses must submit examples of their vintage to the Institute of Douro and Porto Wines for a tasting evaluation before being allowed to bring the wine to market.

Did you know that the Rogue Valley is Oregon’s oldest winemaking region? Unlike the Willamette Valley, which focuses on Burgundian varietals and winemaking techniques (and a fair number of Burgundian winemakers themselves!), the Rogue Valley boasts one of the most diverse selection of styles and grapes in any established winemaking region in America. The one hundred or so wineries that call it home emphasize sustainability.

Full-time physician Dr. Peter Adesman and his wife, Dr. Robin Miller, planted the Peter William estate vineyard in 2013 after decades of work collecting, consuming, and educating on wine. They grow Roussanne, Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Malbec at the estate and purchase from other Rogue Valley vineyards.

The Winemaker Who Changed Everything for Mencía

Raúl Pérez

Spain’s diversity runs far deeper than the well-known powerhouses of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Beyond those muscular Tempranillo wines lies a completely different expression of Spanish red—one that leans into elegance, perfume, and lift rather than sheer force. Head west into the green, mountainous corner of Castilla y León and climb into the hills of Bierzo, and you’ll find a grape that behaves like Pinot Noir with Iberian flair: Mencía. High-toned florals, crunchy red and black fruit, peppery spice, and an unmistakable mineral edge—this is one of Spain’s most captivating varieties, hiding in plain sight.

Bierzo is where Mencía reaches its most profound form, thanks to its patchwork of ancient vineyards perched across schist, slate, and quartzite slopes.
