Erin Nuccio developed his own original label, Haden Fig, while taking over from Russ Raney at Evesham Wood. The Haden Fig wines lean more expressive and impactful notes, showcasing the lovely terroir of the (all dry-farmed) vineyards. He crafts the wines with minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves. We’re proud to be one of the first to share these new releases with you!

Haden Fig Juliette Chardonnay, Mahonia Vineyard, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $36 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery Notes
“This vintage of Juliette was entirely sourced from Mahonia Vineyard in the un-official South Salem Hills. As is our practice with the Haden Fig Chardonnays, this wine was fermented in barrel without battonage and only racked when the selection was made between our Juliette and Willamette Valley designations after 10 months. The WV went to the blending tank and this Juliette was racked (dirty) into other neutral barrels. This year, our experimentation with the Juliette included blending and holding the wine in tank for an extended period toward the end of its elevage. So, unlike previous iterations of Juliette, we racked this wine (clean) into a stainless-steel tank after 14 months where it rested for an additional 2 months. It’s delicious!”

Renaissance Vineyard & Winery Late Harvest Select Sauvignon Blanc, North Yuba 1989 375ml $11.90 special, 36+ half-bottles in stock now
Winery Notes
“Medium to dark amber-brown in color, this wine smells of burnt orange peel, a hint of bergamot, and cafe au lait. In the mouth dark burnt honey, cafe au lait, and a touch of even darker molasses flavors have a wonderful toasted grain quality to them that makes this wine seem almost more savory than sweet despite its significant sugar levels. Really compelling and interesting, with plenty of acidity to keep this wine lively after all this time. A phenomenal flavor experience. Moderately sweet.”

France – Champagne

A lovely vintage in its prime, charming and refreshing.
Jose Michel & Fils Clos Saint Jean Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne 2014 750ml $59.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“The Blanc de Blancs is produced in the best vintages. It is made from a small plot of Chardonnay grown in the village of Saint Agnan on the left bank of the Marne. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then matured both in tank “sur lie” and in ‘demi-muids’. After the secondary fermentation it rests ‘sur lattes’ for at least 5 years allowing the Chardonnay qualities to broaden and mature. Dosage is 5 grams. It is a wine of impeccable character, showing both nobility and restraint. It is worthy of cellaring for at least two years after disgorgement.”

Louis Roederer Collection 245 Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $64.50 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Kristaps Karklins-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Based on the 2020 vintage, Louis Roederer’s NV Brut Collection 245 is stylistically somewhat comparable to the two previous editions, which were based on the 2018 and 2019 vintages. Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon explains that the personality of the wine will change depending on the base year. By identifying the wine with a number, they do not intend to produce the same profile year in and year out, but rather, they will embrace the singularity of each vintage, accepting the different personalities of the base year. It is complemented by a perpetual reserve initiated in 2012, which is stored in large tanks without lees; the reserve provides balance to the warm years like this, as the perpetual component did not go through malolactic fermentation. While a considerable portion of the fruit comes from Louis Roederer’s own estates, for this bottling, the blend incorporates purchased fruit as well, particularly Pinot Meunier, which they do not own. Including approximately 43% Chardonnay, the new Brut Collection offers notes of pear, peach and candied orange zest. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, textural and fleshy, laden with vibrant acidity and concluding with a nicely defined, delicately saline finish, even with 7.5 grams per liter dosage.”

France – Rosé

Domaine de Fenouillet Ventoux Rosé, Rhone 2024 750ml $16.50 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“This rosé is vinified partially by direct press and partially by ‘saignée’, the juice is naturally clarified after a cold ‘débourbage’ of 24 hours, the wine ferments at temperature that never exceeds 16 degrees Celsius and then it is aged on the fine lees for four to six months before bottling. It is a blend of 50% Cinsault, 40% Grenache and 10% Syrah, all of which is planted to soils of clay, limestone and silex. Production is limited: we import approximately 6,000 bottles per annum for the US market.”

Mas de Valeriole ‘Ve’ Rose, IGP Mediterranee 2024 750ml $14.50 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“‘Vé’—a local Provençal expression meaning ‘Look at that!’—is a blend of 70% Caladoc (a crossing of Grenache and Malbec), 15% Merlot, and 15% Marselan (a crossing of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon) from soils of sand and loam. Harvested at night to ensure that the bunches are cool upon entry to the winery, ‘Vé’ is pressed directly and given a brief passage in stainless steel before bottling. Clocking in at a modest 13% alcohol, it offers bright, salt-tinged flavors of raspberry and ripe citrus fruits, with a sneakily long finish given its modest price.”

France – Burgundy

Joseph Drouhin Bourgogne Chardonnay, Burgundy 2021 750ml $24 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Producer Notes
“Fruity and full of life. This is a classical white Burgundy and a good entry level wine for Burgundy in general. The colour is golden yellow, with a greenish glint. The aromas are reminiscent of fresh grape and green almond. Elegant texture.” – Joseph Drouhin

France – Rhone

Old-school style Rhone producer that epitomizes balance, energy, and character!

Run by a father-son team Remy and Oliver Klein in the high elevation village of Sabran, they organically farm a visually stunning estate of 86 acres directly facing Mount Ventoux. This proximity to the mountain puts the domaine right in the path of the Mistral wind, which cools the air and results in grapes of greater intensity.

Domaine la Remejeanne Les Chèvrefeuilles Blanc, Côtes du Rhône 2023 750ml $21.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points
“The 2023 Côtes Du Rhône Les Chèvrefeuilles Blanc is based on 50% Clairette and 25% each Roussanne and Grenache Blanc and spent six months in concrete tanks before bottling. Exotic citrus, melon, honeyed flowers, and salty mineral aromas and flavors all emerge from this medium-bodied, clean, classy, refreshing white, which has a savory, complex, mineral-laced style.”

Domaine la Remejeanne Un Air de Remejeanne, Côtes du Rhône 2023 750ml $19 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Grenache (70%), Syrah (30 %). Wine with a pretty light ruby and purple color. The nose offers an explosion of red fruits with notes of raspberry but also floral notes of lilac and violet. The wine, on the palate, is crisp, fresh and fine. Evolving with roundness, around supple tannins, a controlled generosity, an aroma of wild strawberries, but also a minerality. It is a very digestible wine. Serve around 14° with your spring or summer dishes, such as tomatoes in salads or roasted, barbecues, asparagus or pea dishes or with spicy cuisine. To drink within 2 to 4 years.”

Domaine la Remejeanne Les Chèvrefeuilles Rouge, Côtes du Rhône 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Syrah (50%), Grenache (30%), Cinsault (10%), Mourvèdre (10%). A quite light and silky wine with a certain dynamic personnality. Purple-red in color, the Chèvrefeuilles offers a very open nose of fresh red berries; notes of hibiscus and peppercorn. On the palate, we find the same fruity, floral and white pepper aromatic combinaison. This easy-drinking wine remains energetic, with tannins present but powdery. It is round yet balanced. The finish, fresh and delicately bitter, remains long. We recommend serving the wine with beef carpaccio, pâté en croute, but also with oriental, Asian or sweet/savory dishes. Drink within 3/6 years.”

Domaine la Remejeanne Les Arbousiers, Côtes du Rhône 2022 750ml $24 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Grenache (70%), Syrah (30 %). Wine with a beautiful deep ruby red color. Very intense nose reminiscent of small black fruits: blackcurrant, plum, burlat cherry, mixed with sweet notes of cuberdon candy. The palate turns out to be very elegant, enhanced by a beautiful liveliness, where floral and cherry notes are found. This friand wine is structured by fine and tight tannins. Les Arbousiers have a balanced Rhone character. Without heaviness or excessive generosity, this wine has a great future. A wine to serve with a Thai beef dish, with a Milanese veal escalope, with creamy dishes or even with autumn vegetable dishes. To drink within 3 to 8 years.”

Spain – Canary Islands

Check out our feature on Envinate below, including points-sweeping new releases landing this Friday!

Envinate ‘Benje’ Blanco, Tenerife, Canary Islands 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The white 2023 Benje Blanco, fermented without temperature control since 2021, matured in a 2,500-liter oak foudre and neutral 350-liter barrel, while 65% of the wine was kept in concrete. They also selected finer lees for the élevage, and the wine seems to have gained in finesse. The white grapes didn’t suffer the heat as much as the red ones, but it was not an easy harvest in Santiago del Teide. There’s less oxidation, and the percentage of wine with flor yeasts (25% to 30%) made for finer wines too. There’s a sensation of higher freshness, sharper; it didn’t go through malolactic. It’s also less reductive, and despite being a riper year, the alcohol was kept to 12% and the pH 3.06. It’s a great Benje Blanco. 19,000 bottles and 220 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”
Importer Note “From several parcels of 70–120-year-old vines at 75-300m elevation farmed by Envínate and 15 local families.”

Envinate ‘Benje’ Tinto, Tenerife, Canary Islands 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The bottled 2023 Benje, which has 9% Listán Blanco and 1% Tintilla grapes to complement the Listán Prieto, comes from a very warm and dry year in Santiago del Teide when the vines got blocked and suffered a lot, as they also did in 2019. With the experience from that year, they did a softer vinification, with shorter macerations and extraction. Here, it was an even warmer and earlier year than 2022, with more immediate wines, approachable and open from the very beginning. It’s floral, aromatic and expressive, fine-boned and harmonious, with good freshness. 18,000 bottles and 250 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2024.”
Importer Note “From several parcels of 70–120-year-old vines at 900-1200m elevation farmed by Envínate and 15 local families.”

Envinate ‘Lousas’ Viñas de Aldea, Galicia 2022 750ml $44.50 special, 20 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This has a fascinating nose that shows pepper, dried herbs, wild red fruit and a pleasant, enveloping herbal note. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins, focused and delineated, with lots of precision and a savory sensation. An outstanding entry-level wine in the region. This comes from multiple plots in the Amandi, Quiroga and Mino areas. Each plot is vinified separately with varying proportions of whole bunches. Aging takes place mostly in barriques with a smaller proportion in cement. Drink now.”

Spain – Sierra de Gredos

The friends behind the Spanish winery “4 Monos” (4 Monkeys) fell in love with the Sierra de Gredos during a hiking trip and returned to establish what would quickly become one of the region’s leading producers. Equal parts Mediterranean and Alpine, the region spans three viticultural regions (Méntrida, Vinos de Madrid, and Castilla y León) but represents a terroir all their own. 4 Monos’ wines are tense and evocative, crafted with a minimalist winemaking approach to ensure that the terroir they fell in love can speak for itself.

4 Monos Viticultores ‘GR-10’ Blanco, Sierra de Gredos 2022 750ml $28 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 91 points
“The 2022 GR-10 Blanco has a deeper color but lower alcohol (13.5%) than the 2023 I tasted next to it. Both years had similar cycles, and this one feels a little fresher, with notes of pollen and honey denoting the additional age. It’s round and juicy, with supple flavors and the characteristic bitter twist in the finish. 1,850 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.”

4 Monos Viticultores ‘GR-10’ Tinto, Sierra de Gredos 2022 750ml $26 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“The red 2022 GR-10 Tinto is a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Cariñena that fermented with full clusters and matured in barrels of different sizes and one 4,200-liter oak vat for seven months. It’s fruit-driven, the profile of the year, with 13.5% alcohol, good freshness and some more austere tannins as the grapes come from the lower part of Cadalso and Cenicientos. It’s expressive, aromatic and clean, with a medium-bodied palate that is juicy and tasty, with a supple finish. This is delicious and really impressive for the year. It represents very good value for money and a great introduction to the elegant style of the Garnachas from Gredos. They produced some 31,000 bottles. It was bottled in late August and early September 2023.”

4 Monos Viticultores ‘Aguja del Fraile’, Cadalso de los Vidrios, Sierra de Gredos 2021 750ml $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2021 Aguja del Fraile is their village red from Cadalso de los Vidrios and comes from a number of vineyards (five). It contains around 5% Cariñena and fermented with full clusters and had a longer maceration of 45 days. It matured in 400- and 500-liter oak barrels and five months in a 1,780-liter foudre. It has 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.25 and is fresher and cooler than the previous year. It has contained ripeness but keeping the fruit and the juiciness, with the fine-grained tannins and the strong granite sensation from the village. There’s one more plot in this 2021 from the La Isilla lieu-dit, and they believe this has improved the wine, making it narrower and finer-boned. 1,850 bottles and six magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

4 Monos Viticultores La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas, Sierra de Gredos 2021 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The new single-vineyard red 2021 La Danza del Viento Arroyo de las Ánimas (bottled in 2020 but sold almost exclusively to the Mugaritz restaurant) comes from a plot between the lieux-dits of La Alberca and Lancharrasa between Cadalso and Cenicientos at 960 meters above sea level, with a west exposure but very shady, as it’s on a forest slope. The soil is very shallow degraded gray granite. The wine is perfumed and ethereal, with floral and citrus notes and is structured but with silky tannins. It was picked at the end of September and fermented with 100% uncrushed grapes, mostly full clusters and indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 500-liter barrel for 15 months. It has an expressive nose that is floral, with the herbal side from Cenicientos. It has a solid palate with great harmony, fine tannins and supple flavors and a long, clean and focused finish; this is closer to the La Isilla than Molino Quemado but doesn’t quite reach the same refinement and elegance. It has a moderate 13.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.31 and 5.85 grams of acidity. Only 654 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

4 Monos Viticultures La Danza del Viento La Isilla, Cadalso de los Vidrios, Sierra de Gredos 2021 750ml $64.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“My favorite wine this time was the 2021 La Danza del Viento La Isilla, the single-vineyard red from Cadalso de los Vidrios. It has an ethereal and floral personality that transcends the style of the village. It showcases the vintage with its firm tannins balanced by the tension, length and complexity of the wine. This comes from a vineyard at 860 meters above sea level on very fine sandy soils that they have been recovering since 2013; the grapes were picked in mid-September and fermented with full clusters and a 47-day maceration. It has 2% Cariñena in addition to a majority of Garnacha. The wine matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for 15 months. It has terrific tension, freshness and balance, velvety tannins and a vibrant, symmetric and crystalline finish. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.25 denoting very good freshness and 5.56 grams of acidity. This is superb. Only 630 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

Envinate:

Top Scoring Releases Arriving Friday

Since first discovering the wines of Envínate in 2019, we at Vinopolis have been madly in love. The wines buzz with energy, capturing the terroir of their respective regions as if by magic. The methods of this group of winemakers, friends Alfonso Torrente, José Ángel Martínez, Laura Ramos, and Roberto Santana, are low-intervention in the winery and an ultra-traditional, minimalist approach in the vineyards. They are one of the forerunners of the “New Spanish” wine movement that eschews fat and new oak for finesse and terroir.

The wines arriving Friday include some of their finest ever releases from the Canary Island of Tenerefe and Ribeira Sacra.

Despite being warm and tropical Tenerefe is home to several wine-growing regions, particularly along the foggy cliffs and slopes that line the Atlantic Ocean along the northern coastline. In the sub-region of Táganan, the friends work with ancient vines planted in the volcanic rock along the steeply terraced cliffs that run along ocean. The Palo Blanco wines represent a cooler region along the northern slope of the Teide volcano. Here the Listan Blanco (also known as Palomino) is trained in the traditional “cordon trenzado” style of braiding the vines along the rows.

The Ribeira Sacra wines are composed of ancient native vines of mostly Mencía co-planted with other varietals. The vines are ancient, starting at 60-years-old at minimum with single vineyard bottlings going well up from there. These are excellent examples of what this profound and profoundly Spanish grape can do. Much like Terre Nere’s work with indigenous Sicilian grapes, Envínate’s Mencía can give international superstars like Syrah and Pinot Noir a run for their money.

Envínate has drawn international praise and attention, with particular notice from Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate. Their wines are highly sought-after for their authenticity and ability to capture the terroir of these timeless regions. These are fascinating, age-worthy expressions of “New Spain” wines that are not to be missed, especially not at these prices.

With regard to northern Italian wine and Nebbiolo-at-large, Valtellina is one of those best-kept-secrets. It is home to some of the most ethereal and mineral driven expressions of wine in the world. Naturally insulated from the rest of the country due to the Alpine topography, the villagers practice winemaking exactly as they have for centuries.

One of the region’s finest wine producers – and likely the best-known – is ArPePe. ArPePe re-established his family’s estate in 1984 under his nickname. He helped elevate the winery and region alike to global recognizance and appreciation before his passing in 2004. Within the cellar the winery carved out of a mountain in the subzone of Grumello, the family follows the time-tested script of traditional winemaking. ArPePe’s three children continue his legacy of crafting incredibly expressive wines with poise, grace, and some serious age worthiness.

They craft several Valtellina Superiore and Riserva wines identified by their subzone (Grumello, Sassella, and Inferno), all from the heart of the region. Grumello, ArPePe’s home subzone, has steep and rocky terraces ranging from 350 to 600 meters above sea level. Sassella is the most famous and largest subzone, with steep terraces winding from 270 to 600 meters in elevation. Inferno, likely named for the summer heat it experiences, is the smallest subzone ArPePe works with but offers a wide diversity of slopes and aspects despite a narrower elevation. From these regions, ArPePe crafts magnificent offerings of Nebbiolo that rival Piedmont’s finest. The latest vintage of the Riservas, the unrivaled 2016, arrives Friday.

“Dense and tightly meshed, with taut, chalky tannins and a racy streak of minerality married to flavors of dried black cherry, medicinal herbs, orange peel and milled pepper. Reveals savory hints of tobacco and smoke that push through and linger on the persistent finish. Let this open in the glass or decant for full enjoyment. Drink now through 2031. 1,050 cases made, 150 cases imported. –AN”
James Suckling 93 points “Game, smoke, earth, strawberries and bright licorice root depth. The attack is soft and elegant, with silky tannins and refreshing acidity. A chewy, vivid finish. Drink or hold.”

ArPePe Inferno Riserva ‘Sesto Canto’, Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2016 750ml $119 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 points
“There are lovely accents of eucalyptus and lavender to the rich fruit and spice character in this silky red, which delivers a generous beam of mulled cherry flavors. Finely balanced and long on the palate. A beauty. Drink now through 2036. 1,050 cases made, 75 cases imported. –AN”
James Suckling 92 points “Lifted red currant, camphor and rose aromas. Light-bodied with crisp acidity and dusty yet light and crunchy tannins. The structure defies integration, but the finish is polished with pristine fruit character. Drink or hold.”

“Intense floral nose of red and dark fruit, with a slightly peppery, almost meaty character. There is a lot of stony minerality. Tight-knit structure with fruit and acidity that are crisp and zesty, ripe tannins, a velvety texture and a medium body. Good cherry fruit finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.”
