Crowley Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($26.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “Comprised of Wente and Dijon clones from Four Winds Vineyard this wine demonstrates the undeniable pedigree and personality of this fantastic high elevation and old vine site. Light straw with a hint of green combine with pristine clarity to present this wonderful Chardonnay. The aromatics include slate, anise and pear, with a trace amount of barrel toast. Buoyant acidity frames a lean palate beaming with citrus, mineral and white peach, along with background sweetness provided by lees contact. Clarity and precision highlight this refreshing and versatile Chardonnay.”

Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2012 750ML ($54.95) $46 special
Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2012 750ML ($599.95) $479 special, 1 case available (that’s only $39.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 94+ points “A blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in 40% new French oak, the 2012 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard has lifted notes of black raspberry, black cherry, violets, spring flowers and vanilla bean. This gives way to a full-bodied, thrillingly balanced and concentrated palate that has building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and a great finish. Short-term cellaring is advised here, and it will have two decades or more of longevity.”
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points “Bright ruby-red. The dark berry aromas display a chocolatey ripeness and considerable early appeal. Then sweet, ripe and silky but with plenty of harmonious acidity and underlying minerality to energize the savory dark berry flavors. Finishes with big but thoroughly ripe tannins and plenty of structure for aging. I would not be surprised if this wine shut down in the bottle; it should be long-lived.” ST

Cadence Winery Tapteil Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2012 750ML ($54.95) $46 special
Cadence Winery Tapteil Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2012 750ML ($599.95) $479 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $39.92/bottle!)
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93+ points “Bright ruby-red. Red berries, cocoa powder and licorice on the nose. Tightly wound and youthfully imploded, conveying an impression of density without weight. Dark fruit and mineral flavors show terrific lift but are extremely backward in the early going. “Drink this with a big steak or hold it for four years,” suggests Ben Smith, adding that the 1999 Tapteil is great right now. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and outstanding subtle length and lift. This wine was aged in 40% new oak and was racked a total of just three times. Incidentally, I also got an early look at the 2013 Tapteil, and that impressively intense wine may need even longer aging than the ’12, due in part to its higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Tapteil Vineyard is elegant and complex, with lots of minerality in its red plums, blueberry and floral bouquet. Full-bodied, mouth filling, layered and pure, with lots of tannin on the mid-palate and finish, it needs short-term cellaring and will be another 2012 from Ben that will see its 20th birthday in fine form. The blend here is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, all of which spent 18 months in 40% new French oak.”
FRANCE-CHAMPAGNE
Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Brut 2006 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This offers great balance between the freshest fruit and toasty maturity. That poise gives this impressive Champagne a tension, a high wire act that works superbly. It is rich, full of fruit but also with great depth. It will certainly age, so drink now or hold through 2019.” WE

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame Brut, Champagne 2004 750ML ($169.95) $99 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “A fine and lacy mousse is draped over a firm frame of well-integrated acidity, belying the complexity of this elegant Champagne. A delicately woven tapestry of black currant, piecrust, chalk, spring blossom and lemon zest flavors ends with a lasting note of smoke-tinged minerality. Drink now through 2029.” WS
FRANCE-BURGUNDY
Vincent Dauvissat Sechet, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($99.95) $89 special
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 91 points “Pale yellow. Tangy aromas of orange and lemon peel and ginger. Not yet hugely complex in the mouth but boasts sexy sucrosité leavened by lovely inner-mouth tension. Intensely flavored, brisk and long.”

Domaine Dauvissat-Camus Les Clos, Chablis Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($219.95) $199 special
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 95 points “Pale yellow. Higher-pitched on the nose than the Preuses, offering strong oyster-shell minerality lifted by lavender and violet nuances. Densely packed, tactile and suave, displaying outstanding energy and inner-mouth citrussy lift. Comes across as less violent than the Preuses, and more perfumed on the palate. Finishes with oustanding length and a magically light touch.”

Domaine Dauvissat-Camus Les Preuses, Chablis Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($219.95) $199 special
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 94 points “Bright, pale yellow-green. Idiosyncratic, slightly reduced nose offers powerful saline minerality, with ginger and quinine in the background and little sign of this bottling’s typical floral character. Then wonderfully rich and fat in the mouth, with a thickness of texture rare for this grand cru in the early going. The strong marine character carries through on the palate, making this suave yet powerful wine tricky to taste today. I’d like to see this again in a few years, but it will probably need longer than that to express itself fully.”
FRANCE-BORDEAUX
Chateau Marojallia, Margaux 2009 750ML ($179.95) $149 special
Robert Parker 95+ points “This is possibly the finest wine I have ever tasted from this property, run by Jean-Luc Thunevin and his partner Murielle Andraud. An absolutely stunning nose of violets, creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor and subtle new oak burst from the glass. The wine has great fruit, superb texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and an extravagantly rich, concentrated palate with low acidity and ripe tannin. Give it another 3-4 years to firm up and lose some baby fat, then drink it over the following 20+ years.”
ITALY-PIEDMONT
Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino Rosso dei Dardi Nebbiolo 2014 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Case-12 Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino Rosso dei Dardi Nebbiolo 2014 750ML ($249.95) $199 special (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2014 Rosso dei Dardi is 100% Nebbiolo from Dardi, done in steel, with carbonic maceration. A textbook example of the vintage, the 2014 exudes class and personality. A host of dark cherry, plum, violet, spice and mint nuances open up effortlessly. The 2014 is at once translucent yet powerful as only Nebbiolo can be. Readers who can find the 2014 should not hesitate, as it is truly special.” AG

Michele Chiarlo Asili, Barbaresco DOCG 2010 750ML ($89.95) $59 special
James Suckling 96 points “Wow. So much beautiful fruit to this wine but the tannins and intact and polished. Full body and very fine with a polished, silky-textured mouthfeel. One of the best wines ever from Michelle Chiarlo, which shows the greatness of the Asili vineyard. Goes on for minutes. Try after 2017.” JS

Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is a real stunner. Translucent and weightless in the glass, with tons of pure pedigree, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Sweet lavender, mint, violet and sage notes lift from the glass in a precise, aromatic Nebbiolo to enjoy over the next decade or so. What a gorgeous wine this is. Sottimano’s Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from Barbaresco-designated vineyards in the Basarin vineyard.” AG
ITALY-OTHER
Cave Mont Blanc 1187 Extra Brut, Morgex et de la Salle DOC 2012 750ML ($31.95) $28 special
100% Prie Blanc. Traditional fermentation in bottle.

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2014 750ML ($21.95) $16 special
Winery note “Brilliant straw yellow with a green shimmer. Quite pronounced and expressive aroma with flowery and somewhat spicy notes. Rich flavoured in the mouth, with a slight smokiness at the back and a good, fresh finish. When properly cellared, this will drink well for 2 to 4 years.”
GERMANY
Weingut Franz Kunstler Hochheimer Holle Riesling Spatlese Trocken, Rheingau 2002 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
“Pear, flowers and chalk dust in the nose. Brothy and rich in a Chablis-like expression of chalky terroir, laden with herbs and flowers. The palate feel is so soft and creamy one could almost believe part of the wine had gone through malolactic fermentation. Subtly herbal, milky, pearsy finish. The grapes for this were picked in late October.” Vinous Media

Kruger-Rumpf Munsterer Rheinberg Riesling Spatlese 1998 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Terry Theise notes “(Old-school!) Just 30 g/l rs, gnarly and chewy. “Petrol.” Zingy dry finish. My colleague Sunny Brown said “crushed pretzels.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

AUSTRIA
Schloss Gobelsburg Lamm Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 94 points “The Kamptal’s iconic Grüner Veltliner vineyard has seldom if ever had to rise to a challenge like that of the other Gobelsburg 2013s from this variety. It succeeds in part by offering scents and flavors such as make one wonder how this could come from grapes. Hyacinth and freesia in the nose are mingled with nuances of alkaline and wet stone that then, along with toasted grain and mouthwatering veal stock, dominate the palate proceedings. That’s not to suggest that this wine lacks fruit. Apple, quince and honeydew offer a luscious presence, with complete transparency to mossy forest floor and mineral intrigue. Bittersweet floral perfume adds to the wine’s creamy, glossy inner-mouth allure. Rather than the energy and dynamic so memorable in the comparable Renner, this delivers an enveloping, buoyant wave of finishing flavor.”
Terry Theise notes “It’s a high-water mark of GV perfection, and even after all these supernal vintages, this wine can still gob-smack you. It’s every possible thing to cherish about GV, brilliance and intensity, taut yet endlessly juicy, “sweet” yet steely, like taking a huge cable and stretching it to the moon.”

ARGENTINA
Vina Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza 2014 750ML ($19.95) $16.60 special
James Suckling 91 points “I like the black olive and bark with currant undertones. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish that’s also silky and crisp. Drink or hold.” JS

HUNGARY
Weingut Weninger Balf Kekfrankos, Sopron 2011 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Winery note “The Sopron wine region is our passion. Since 1997 we work in this area. The Sopron cuvée pays tribute to it, representing the wideness of the Little Hungarian Plane (Kisalföld) and the strength of nature in the Ferto-Hanság National Park: a fruity and vivid wine. Selective hand harvest. Native yeast fermentation in stainless steel. Natural malolactic fermentation and 12 months ageing in wooden tanks.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

SLOVENIA
Weingut Tement Domaine Ciringa Fosilni Breg Sauvignon Blanc, Stajerska 2013 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Winery note “Tement winery planted Sauvignon Blanc vines on the Slovenian territory Ciringa, right next to their best single-vineyard Zieregg in Austria. The combination of the microclimate and the rich shell limestone with cambisol soil provides ideal conditions for accentuated, long-living, authentic and mineralic Sauvignon Blanc. The label on the Burgundy bottle shows a sea star fossil (found in the single vineyard Ciringa) and demonstrates the origin and the balance of this mineralic and straightforward Sauvignon Blanc.”

Arriving in January

Wines Arriving Jaunary 5th:

Marie-Noelle Ledru Grand Cru Brut 2009 750ML ($89.95) $79 pre-arrival special

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Marie-Noelle Ledru Grand Cru Brut NV 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “(85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay, all grown in Ambonnay and Bouzy): Light gold. Pungent aromas of pear skin, pit fruits, honey and smoky lees, with a spicy ginger note gaining strength with air. Broad, pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors are lifted by gentle acidity and complemented by hints of redcurrant and toasted nuts. A finishing jolt of smoky minerality suggests that this firmly structured Champagne will be even better with some bottle age.” JR

Also re-arriving:

Marie-Noelle Ledru Grand Cru Extra Brut NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 re-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “(85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay, grown in Ambonnay and Bouzy): Light gold. Underripe pear, ginger, lemon rind and honeysuckle on the mineral-driven nose. Spicy, focused and emphatically dry, offering bitter pear skin and citrus fruit flavors with hints of rhubarb, iodine and tarragon. Tight, linear and pure, finishing with excellent clarity and impressive stony persistence. While some may find this Champagne too austere, it has plenty of fruit intensity to buffer its angles and edges.” JR
Peter Liem writes “Ledru owns five hectares in Ambonnay and one in Bouzy, with a total of 30 different parcels. All of the vineyards are planted with cover crops and tilled, and she uses no herbicides or insecticides, seeking to work her vines as naturally as possible. The same sensibility extends to the cellar, where she makes the wines without filtration, without cold-stabilization and without any sulfur at disgorgement. Fermentation is all in stainless steel and enameled steel tanks, for their neutrality, and the malolactic is allowed for all wines. “I do the malo because for me it’s natural,” she says. The wines are aged for a respectably long time on their lees, averaging about three years for the brut sans année and five years for the vintage wines, and all disgorgement is done by hand, in a fashion not dissimilar to how it might have been done two or three generations ago. Ledru only bottles about half of her production, meaning that there’s very little wine to go around, and the other half is sold to the négoce, most notably to the houses of Pol Roger and Deutz.”

Tenuta di Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Tenuta di Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($319.95) $259 pre-arrival special (that’s only $43.17/bottle!)
Wine Spectator 94 points –#43 Top 100 2015–“Coffee and chocolate aromas signal this exotic and fragrant red. The cherry and plum notes are almost afterthoughts, while spice, leather and tobacco flavors come to the fore, with vivid acidity through the lingering finish. Best from 2019 through 2035.” WS

Tenuta di Collosorbo Rosso di Montalcino 2012 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 90 points “Bright red. Spearmint and inky nuances complicate redcurrant, red cherry, pomegranate and minerals on the complex nose. Bright and fresh on the palate, with sweet red cherry and balsamic flavors lingering impressively. This rich, round wine is similar to a Brunello but maintains a lively Rosso personality. Very well done.”
Wine Enthusiast 90 points “Aromas of meat juices, forest floor, perfumed berries and grilled herbs lead the nose on this savory, full-bodied Rosso. The dense palate doles out ripe wild cherry accented with orange peel and allspice. Bold, velvety, and fresh, it’s made to be enjoyed soon.” WE

Domaine de la Pousse d’Or Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Burghound 93 points “This trades elegance for greater complexity with its broad ranging aromas of spicy and pungently earth black berry fruit liqueur, black tea and intensely animale suffused nose. There is excellent size, weight and power to the big and well-muscled flavors that possess plenty of supporting dry extract that coats the palate on the driving, even explosive finish. This should abundantly repay mid to longer-term cellaring.” BH

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “Pierre-Marie also excelled in 2013, and his Cornas Renaissance offers fleshy, ripe, full-bodied notes of powdered rock, cassis, black raspberry and ground herbs. With time in the glass, it becomes dominated by its mineral-component and it gains mid-palate depth and richness. It will drink reasonably well on release, but have 15 years or more of overall longevity.” WA

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2013 1.5L ($259.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94-97 points “More powerful, backwards and inky than the Renaissance, the 2013 Cornas exhibits classic notes of cold steel, burning embers, crushed rock and inky purple fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated and with high, yet sweet, tannin, it’s a serious wine that will have two decades of longevity.” JD

Burgundies Arriving January 8th

Domaine Servin Bougros, Chablis Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “(100% oak; 13.4% alcohol): Pale yellow-green. Lovely spicy lift to the aromas of lime, white peach and powdered stone. Juicy, dense and lightly saline; conveys strong Chablis character in a somewhat sweet way. A rich, fruit-driven wine of obvious power. Finishes with very good length and grip.” JR

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Servin Les Preuses, Chablis Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90+ points “(30% oak): Bright pale yellow with a green tinge. Spicy, slightly high-toned aromas of orange oil and white peach. Pliant and concentrated, offering good inner-mouth energy and minerality to the intense soft citrus and floral flavors. Very rich but in need of a couple years in the bottle to gain in complexity. Slightly phenolic on the back end, showing subtle chalk and saline qualities.” JR

Re-Arriving January 14th

Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG 2009 750ML ($179.95) $128 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “The 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia is a stunning wine. Roberto did not make Monfortino in 2009, therefore that wine was declassified and added here. The results are truly spectacular. The wine shows the soft fullness that is characteristic of the vintage, backed by tight tannins that pull the wine together. Dark fruit, licorice, chopped herb, white truffle, tar and pressed rose form a united aromatic front. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035.” WA
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Conterno’s 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth. A wine of volume and breadth, the 2009 fleshes out beautifully on the palate with layers of harmonious, silky fruit. Sweet tobacco, mint, flowers, spices and the most beautiful pure fruit all flesh out on the voluptuous, inviting finish. All the elements are in place for the 2009 to develop into a superb Barolo, but readers will have to be patient as the wine was just bottled. I remember what happened the last time Conterno bottled a Cascina Francia, but no Monfortino. The vintage was 2007, and I deeply regretted not having purchased that wine.” AG

Also Arriving Early January

Distributor note: “As is generally the case with this wine, the 2012 is all about minerals and stones, not zingy Sauvignon fruit. Think of the kind of Sauvignon that could make you guess Chablis blind… I see why Deschamps releases this late, as it’s a powerful, serious expression and simply deserves to be held back a little longer.

“This wine absolutely brings to mind some of the greatest expressions of Loire Sauvignon Blanc I’ve ever had – wines from Edmond Vatan and Francois Cotat in nearby Sancerre. Again, this wine is built around a mineral core and has plenty of natural density, not just acidity.”

Marc Deschamps Pouilly-Fume Les Champs de Cri 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2.3-hectares parcel Champs de Cri in Les Loges produces the most complex, elegant and long-lived Fumé of the estate. From vines about 55 years old, the pale golden 2012 Pouilly-Fumé Champs de Cri was kept on the lees for several months more than the other cuvées of the domaine and it is released later. It is a very complex and tightly woven wine, which was totally closed but extremely promising when I tasted it in early August 2014. The nose disclosed most of all the extreme deep mineral foundation of this Fumé with subtle hints of citrons, bitter orange, straw, jasmine and elder flowers. On the palate this is a full-bodied, rich, concentrated and multilayered Pouilly-Fumé of great elegance and expression. It’s an aristocratic, extremely well-balanced, fresh and lingering monolith of natural beauty.” WA

Donnhoff

German Elite

The Donnhoff family has occupied the Nahe for the past two centuries, slowly growing from a humble farm to a wine estate of world renown. Their terroirs include slate, volcanic rock beds, limestone, and loam; the vineyards remain non-irrigated and have been covered by straw and compost in order to enrich the soil and discourage evaporation or erosion.

Harvest is performed by hand, across two or three passes, and the grapes are pressed within three hours of being picked. Large, traditional casks and stainless steel are both employed during elevage, with spontaneous fermentation. Across a wide range of vineyards, the estate produces some of the most brilliant wines to ever come out of the Nahe and out of Germany overall – these wines are contenders on a global scale, deserving of every bit of its unceasing acclaim.

Donnhoff Wines Available Here Now

Weingut Donnhoff Riesling 2013 750ML ($24.95) $18.80 special, 19 bottles available
The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Riesling is quite coolish and mineral on the nose, very clear with white stone fruit aromas. Light-bodied, salty and piquant, this is a sexy Riesling, a dying sort of Riesling, a Oberhausen Kabinett off-dry, a delicious, stimulatingly piquant wine which is almost completely exported. An extremely quaffable wine.”
Terry Theise notes “I think these wines show a paradox analogous to the thread-count in linens: the more there are, the smoother it feels. Each of these wines has so much sheer material the result is they feel not soft but caressing. That said though, this ’13 has greener flavors than usual, in keeping with the vintage character. It remains the world’s greatest wine value, and it seems that some of you have also made this discovery, as we have very few cases unspoken for as I write.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 2 bottles available
The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Riesling Trocken Tonschiefer is more sophisticated than the Gutsriesling, displaying pure, flinty slate aromas along with bright fruit aromas. Quite round and intense on the palate, this is medium-bodied, slightly piquant Riesling with a certain power, juice and length. A mouthful of wine with Spätlese level.”
Terry Theise notes “The estate wine from (mostly) Leistenberg which grows on a sandy slate called Tholeyer Schiefer. This is as limpid as spring-water, until it rears up with radicchio and with a slatey char. It’s for connoisseurs of the art of bitterness, in a jacket of cool freshness and the gleam of sunlight on the surface of the water.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken 2014 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 89+ points “The 2014 Tonschiefer is a lovely wine, with a bit different expression of minerality than the Estate Trocken, as these grapes hail entirely from the Leistenberg and are a on a bed of carbon-slate that is geological outlier of the coal beds in the Saar. The nose offers up a lovely constellation of tangerine, a hint of white cherry, wild yeasts, slate, citrus peel and a gentle topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and quite suave on the attack, with lovely focus and grip, ripe, well-integrated acids and a long, balanced and quite classy finish. Lovely juice and a fine value. 2015-2025+.” JG
Terry Theise notes “This is the dry wine from the (Oberhäuser) Leistenberg, on sandy slate. It’s pure mineral in 2014. Crisp almost to the point of brittleness, yet it’s so breathy and silky I know it will shine as it sheds its immaturity.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett 2014 750ML ($29.95) $21.90 special, 26 bottles available
John Gilman 89-90+ points “The 2014 Krötenpfuhl Kabinett had just been bottled as well- this time only a few days before my visit and was a bit out of sorts as a result. The nose is open and juicy at the present time, offering up scents of apple, peach, lovely soil tones, a touch of beeswax and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, accessible and succulent on the attack, with a nice core of fruit, good complexity and a slightly pinched finish at the present time, from the very, very recent bottling. I am sure this will be very tasty, but it was not entirely on form at the time of my visit. 2015-2025.”
Terry Theise notes “Best! Ever! Vintage! Spritzy, brilliant, seeming to show every green thing (lime-zest, verbena, anise hyssop, wintergreen) atop the salumeria savor. Somehow this has fallen in love and is telling everyone in the world.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles available
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2014 1.5L ($79.95) $69 special, 2 magnums available
John Gilman 90-92 points “In the past there has been versions of the Leistenberg Kabinett under both screwcap and natural cork, but this year, it is all under the screw, and this wine too had only been bottled for a few days prior to my visit. The bouquet is a very stylish blend of apple, pear, slate, lilacs and a touch of wild yeasts in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and succulent, with a good core, beautiful balance, ripe acids and very good length and grip on the finish. This too is a bit unsettled from its recent bottling, but will be very good. Pity about the closure…2015-2025.” JG

Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken 2014 750ML ($47.95) $36 special, 12 bottles available
Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken 2014 1.5L ($119.95) $89 special, 2 magnums available
John Gilman 91+ points “I did not take note on the alcohol level of the Kahlenberg this year, but the Höllenpfad Trocken bottling comes in between twelve and 12.5 percent alcohol, and I have to assume it is the same for the Kahlenberg. The 2014 Höllenpfad is really lovely in this vintage and very, very reflective of its unique, red sandstone soils on both the nose and palate. The lovely nose offers up scents of pink grapefruit, tart orange, lemongrass, a dollop of wild yeasts and a very complex base of minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and more filigreed, with a lovely core, bright acids and lovely focus and grip on the long, vibrant and really quite elegant finish. This is a touch more feline than the Kahlenberg and gets the slight nod in 2014 as a result. 2018- 2035+.” JG
Terry Theise notes “It means, basically, “Highway To Hell.” I kid you not. It’s from the cadaster parcel Mühlberg, which could be a GG, but this is a famously tardy wine—Kahlenberg gives you a chummier greeting. I’m starting to sense this wine needs to attain at least some of its tertiary notes before we see what it is, and why it’s made dry. Helmut and Cornelius counsel patience as I sat kind of lost at the wine’s forbidding exterior.”

Weingut Donnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken 2014 750ML ($39.95) $31.90 special, 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 91 points “The 2014 Kahlenberg Trocken hails from grapes with Spätlese must weights this year and is a notable step up from the first two, very good wines. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a classy blend of white cherries, apple, spring flowers, a lovely base of soil and a youthful topnote of orange peel. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and nicely reserved on the attack, with a fine core, bright acids and superb backend energy and cut on the long finish. This is really high class juice that would age long and happily under cork, though I cannot remember which closure it was destined to receive. 2017-2035.” JG
Terry Theise notes “The Kreuznach site is a gentle slope on gravelly loam, but has long been regarded as an excellent vineyard. I’d been leaving it out of the offering in a fruitless attempt to keep it tidy, but tidiness has no place in either rock & roll or the fine wine business. So: I found this ’14 to be really deft, stern but breathy, wonderfully fragrant, mineral, hint of maize or wet cereal; a determined finish but really, only 70% of this note has any chance of being accurate six months from now.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 25 bottles available
John Gilman 94+ points “As is the case with the Brücke Spätlese, the 2014 Hermannshöhle Spätlese is a superb bottle that may always live just a bit on the shadow of the pure magic of the 2013 version. The wine offers up an excellent and complex aromatic constellation of pink grapefruit, white cherries, slate, a hint of petrol, wild yeasts, orange peel and a topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is medium-full, focused and very suave on the attack, with a fine core, ripe acids and outstanding length and grip on the still very primary, but utterly seamless finish. Fine, fine juice. 2020-2050.” JG
Terry Theise notes “A loving beaming grinning-like-a-dope vintage of this perennial masterpiece, transparent and lucid; indeed it’s a dialectical explication of Hermannshöhle; it reminded me of the ’08 but it’s more Eiswein-y, that sorcerous syrup.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2014 750ML ($44.95) $33 special, 12 bottles available
Terry Theise notes “Not so girlish or sweet-natured as usual; this is serious and wants to make a point—how strong and proud this terroir can be. A megalith of mineral here! Its cherry-dimples are discreet. Seems drier than usual, less comely, more complex, and utterly vivid and dazzling.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 18 bottles available
John Gilman 93 points “The 2014 Brücke Spätlese is really a lovely wine this year, but it cannot quite compete with the really classic example of this bottling crafted here in 2013. The wine offers up a lovely and quite complex bouquet of tangerine, apple, a classy base of slate, wild yeasts, a nice touch of Brücke spice tones and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and seamless, with a rock solid core, ripe acids and excellent length and grip on the focused and vibrant finish. This is really a lovely bottle of Spätlese. 2020-2050.” JG
Terry Theise notes “It’s usually their ur-riesling, the one that feels Edenic or primordial, and the one that’s often inscrutable in its youth. Not this year. I’ve never experienced a young Brücke that’s so psychedelic and in-your-face, perhaps because it’s the only wine from Brücke this year (no Auslese nor Eiswein) and so all the best fruit is in here. After four weeks of tasting, hundreds if not thousands of wines, it is this one that haunts me, like the very map of your soul that you put down somewhere and now can’t locate.”

Donnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese GK 2014 750ML ($119.95) $79 special, 2 bottles available
Donnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese GK 2014 375ML ($59.95) $49 special, 10 half-bottles available
John Gilman 93+ points “The 2014 Hermannshöhle Auslese is the only bottling at this Prädikat level in the cellars this year, and it is a very pretty and elegant example of the vintage. The wine delivers a refined and gently-glazed nose of pineapple, apple, bee pollen, wild fennel, tangerine and a lovely base of slate. On the palate the wine is fullish, elegant and beautifully balanced, with a very good midpalate depth, impeccable focus and balance, vibrant acids and lovely grip on the long and zesty finish. 2023-2060+.” JG
Terry Theise notes “This may sport a “goldcapsule” but there’s only this Auslese plus maybe one other small lot destined for the auction—undecided in March when I visited. Vis-à-vis the Spätlese, they seem to run neck-and-neck, but the Auslese will draw ahead in the later laps. For now it concentrates the Spät without layering six coats of botrytis over it. In fact is has all the snap and vigor of the Spät with more overripe plum, more compote, and also verbena and spearmint, yet it’s the green flavors that are (at least now) most expressive, so an improbable Auslese with enormous lift and buoyance, and with a lacy richness.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese 2011 375ML ($199.95) $149 special, 15 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points “Intriguingly musky and subtly fungal as well as piercing in its evocation of distilled pit fruits and botanicals, the nose of Donnhoff’s 2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese – which was picked alongside its Auslese counterpart – promises an intense palate experience that the wine very much delivers. Distilled extracts of wormwood, woodruff and anisette; maraschino and serviceberry seem to lace the amalgam of quince jelly with pear and white peach nectars in a lusciously multi-layered yet animated palate performance. A spicy and tropical suggestion of mango chutney compounds the vibrantly penetrating effect of pungent herbal and pit fruit essences in a tonsil-gripping, mouth-shaking finish.” WA

Weingut Donnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese 2007 375ML ($199.95) $179 special, 2 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 99 points “The over-ripe pear and quince featured in other nobly sweet wines of this collection are very much present in Donnhoff’s 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, along with aromas of distilled gentian, gardenia, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, and white truffle. The intensity of inner-mouth perfume here – orchard fruit, floral, and herbal distillates – is nearly beyond belief. Pear nectar, quince preserves, apple jelly, liquid gardenia, brown spices, and a certain saline and smoky suggestions of things mineral inform a finish of trance-inducing duration. This amazing elixir – harvested largely in the Turmchen section of the site – should be worthy of 40 years cellaring. When Donnhoff laughingly referred to this as the year of Felsenberg, he was not in fact kidding, nor was he referring just to the sheer number of bottlings!”WA

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011 375ML ($239.95) $149 special, 5 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can’t complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity – but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine’s caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious.” WA

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 23 bottles available
John Gilman 94+ points “The 2014 Dellchen GG is another really stunningly focused young wine, with superb aromatic and flavor precision to go along with excellent structural elements and impeccable balance. The bouquet is a mix of grapefruit, tart orange, wild yeasts, plenty of smokiness, a fine base of slate and again, a distinct topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied and rock solid at the core, with lovely focus and balance, racy acids and a long, refined and utterly seamless finish. Outstanding juice this year. 2022-2060+.” JG

Weingut Donnhoff ‘Felsenturmchen’ Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 21 bottles available
John Gilman 93+ points ‘The 2014 Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs bottling form the Türmchen section of the vineyard this year has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass in a classic constellation of white cherries, pink grapefruit, complex floral tones, a fine base of slate, wild yeasts, lemongrass and orange peel. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very refined, with a rock solid core, ripe, zesty acids, laser-like focus and a long, youthful and energetic finish. A beautiful bottle of dry Riesling in the making. 2020-2055″ JG

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2014 1.5L ($179.95) $149 special, 1 magnum available
John Gilman 94+ points “The Grosses Gewächs from the Hermannshöhle in 2014 is another outstanding wine in the making, offering up a superb and utterly suave aromatic mélange of grapefruit, tart orange, slate, wild yeasts, citrus peel and a lovely, discreet topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with a superb core of fruit, ripe, seamless acids and superb length and grip on the tightly-knit finish. A really superb and suave young Hermannshöhle GG. 2022-2060+” JG

Donnhoff Grosses Gewachs 6-Pack 2014 750ML ($419.95) $379 special, 3 six-packs available
2 bottles each of the 3 Grosses Gewachs bottlings from 2014: Dellchen, Felsenberg, And Hermannshohle
Terry Theise notes “All of these had remarkable aspects and potentials but none of them was ready to rock. Felsenberg has tremendous aroma, almost fiercely smoky, with lemon and Indonesian peppers. Dellchen is fleshier but also, as is its wont, more inscrutable. Hermannshöhle was still on its first lees but was already showing depth and fragrance. If my “plusses” matter to you, and if I let myself prognosticate, it’s two for Felsenberg and Hermannshöhle and one for Dellchen. The wines will surely make a fool of me.”

The aromas dangle in front of you, delicately and seductively, with ethereal layers of spice, blue flower, almond paste, anisette and dried cherry or wild berry. Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia is soft, silky and very nicely balanced, especially in its tannins, where the wine really stands out next to so many peers. Readers should open the 2003 at least an hour in advance to allow the aromatics to open up. This is a very sexy and open young Barolo from Conterno with very little signs of the challenging growing season.” (6/2014)

Antonio Galloni 93 points “Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, spices and mint race across the palate in the 2011 Barbaresco Serra. This is one of the most intense, tannic 2011 Barbarescos readers will come across. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2011 is going to need considerable patience. Hints of sweet tobacco, mint and anise add nuance on the layered, super-expressive finish. The 2011 Serra spent two years in 50-hectoliter casks.” AG
