The Wine Independent 96+ points “Velvety burnished gold in color with near imperceptible fine bubbles, the Grand Année 2015 is a 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay blend of 11 crus, 79% Grands Cru and 21% Premiers Crus, that is 100% barrel fermented, aged 7 years on lees and finished with an 8 grams per liter dosage…”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “…There’s real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow…”
Wine Spectator 96 points “This expressive Champagne features a rich, well-spiced range of flavors chiseled by well-honed, integrated acidity, which lends a racy feel to the ripe black cherry and mulberry fruit and notes of salted almond, pink grapefruit granita, crystallized honey and pickled ginger that ride the raw silk–like mousse…”
James Suckling 96 points “…Lifted by fresh acidity on the medium-bodied palate, the wine keeps unfolding in toasted walnuts, honey and a dash of bitter marmalade. It’s mouth-filling, alive with acidity and full of finesse.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95+ points “…The wine has turned out beautifully, exhibiting a more muscular, old-school Bollinger profile in contrast to the unusually racy, fine-boned 2014 that preceded it…”

Cameron Winery Abbey Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml $79 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “This vintage of Abbey Ridge Pinot comes from the oldest vines of Wadenswil and Pommard, planted starting in 1975. Steeped in the vineyard’s lavender, rose, and rosemary-tinged terroir is a heavenly swirling of wild raspberry,–first silken, then building gently with flavorful tannins, all with a sensual base note. It must be noted: the ’23 Abbey Ridge carries incredible flavor and feel for a wine with 12.6% abv. 11 barrels were selected for the blend.”

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Rouge, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml $79 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “The complexities of Clos Electrique come from multiple old red Burgundy clones, 41 years of age. This Pinot Noir is its own animal and an awesome one at that! What begins with the vineyard’s foresty-minerally savoriness blossoms into a deeply-fruited, silky surge. This contrast of elements in the 2023 vintage make this a standout vintage for Clos Electrique–forever unique and in ’23, even more handsome.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is powerful, dense and compact. Dark cherry, plum, new eather, licorice and incense all run through this potent, brooding Barolo. Big, muscular Mosconi tannins wrap it all together. I would be in no rush to open this. This needs a ton of air.”

Decanter 91 points “2023 marks just the second year of Bisci’s sparkling wine project. but they’re off to a great start. This is a floral, saline and food friendly sparkling Verdicchio from Le Marche’s Matelica sub-region, combining floral notes with mineral and apricot skin and peach flavours. Sapid, super-fresh and moreish, it makes you reach for the bottle before you’ve even emptied your glass!”

Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica, Marche 2024 750ml $19 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “The 2024 Verdicchio di Matelica has a notably fruit-forward personality but retains fantastic balance. It opens with a pretty blend of crushed green apples, nectarine, wild herbs and white smoke. This is deeply textural and punches above its weight. The 2024 mixes the verve and mineral intensity of Matelica with the sunny character of the vintage in an attractive way.”
Léoville Poyferré
What Saint-Julien lacks for in first growth estates, it more than makes up for it in the three second growth Léoville estates of Barton, Las Cases, and Poyferré. Beloved for centuries, these estates and this terroir offer an experience that, especially when price is considered, rivals the Moutons and Latours. The three were created when the original, larger estate was divided first during the French Revolution, when Barton was spun off, and again in 1840 when Poyferré was formed.
Perhaps not a household name, Poyferré is known among Bordeaux insiders as producing a “voluptuous” wine, to quote Jane Anson of Decanter, which she attributes to its high proportion of Merlot. This is a hedonistic and deeply rewarding wine to convince the most stubborn of American-only Cab drinkers that there’s life and joy to be found in Bordeaux.

Chateau Léoville Poyferré, Saint-Julien 2014 750ml $99 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2014 Léoville Poyferré is gorgeous. Dark, sumptuous and ample on the palate, it possesses remarkable depth. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, scorched earth, licorice and menthol all flesh out as this radiant, deeply expressive wine shows off its considerable pedigree. The 2014 is going to need time to fully come together, but it is super-impressive…”
Steven Spurrier-Decanter 94 points “Very deep red. Bold, ripe and fleshy blackcurrant nose steeped in new oak, without being too overbearing. Rich, dense, and flamboyant, very concentrated and intense. Fleshy and forthright, it has a long finish that’s spicy and complex. Drinking window: 2020-2035.”
Chateau Léoville Poyferré, Saint-Julien 2016 750ml $149 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Decanter 98 points “Relatively closed right now, as are all the St-Juliens, this takes time to open in the glass but does so to reveal lots of northern Médoc character in the liquorice and brambly fruit puree, with touches of caramel and sweet cassis. It’s hewn out of slate boulders with layers of tannin – a lovely construction that’s deepened even further during ageing….”
Wine Spectator 95-98 points “The deep well of gorgeous cassis, blueberry paste and blackberry puree flavors will carry this for the long haul. Shows a terrific graphite underpinning and a flash of cold charcoal. This is a big one.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97+ points “… This liquid is simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich, ample and dramatic in bearing, the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften, but there is so much to look forward to…”

Pommery Champagne
While you can be forgiven for not knowing Louise Pommery, Champagne as we know it would not exist without her contributions. In the 1870’s Champagne was one of the sweetest wines in the world. Sugar helped balance out the otherwise searing acidity that was seen in Champagnes of the period, and the sweetness catered to commercial preferences of the era.
This all changed when Madame Louise Pommery commissioned her cellar master to make a Champagne with as little added sugar as possible, creating the category we now know to be “Brut”. The debut vintage was an overnight success in England, which had developed a preference for drier styles of wine. The Brut style redefined Champagne and is now the default style.

Pommery Royal Grand Cru Brut Millésime 2008 750ml $79 special, 4 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points “An excellent introduction to the brilliance of the 2008 vintage in Champagne, this has a cornucopia of citrus, toast and brioche notes, plus some red-fruit character. Powerful and structured, but very focused with impressive chalky minerality, this is just reaching ideal drinking form. Very long, tantalizing finish, where the high natural acidity is well integrated. A blend of 50% pinot noir and 50% chardonnay all from Grand Cru villages. Drink or hold.”

Wine Spectator 93 points “Ripe strawberry and baked white cherry flavors are set on the creamy mousse of this bright rosé Champagne, underscored by hints of almond biscotti and candied pink grapefruit peel. Clean-cut and minerally on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2027. 416 cases made, 12 cases imported.”

The Jura wine region in eastern France is easy to overlook. Home to unusual wines, unusual labels, and unusual characters (we’re looking at you, Ganevat), it doesn’t scream “user friendly.” But to leave the region entirely to the wine nerds is a serious disservice to the wondrous and elegant experiences captured within these oddly-shaped bottles.
At the crossroads of authentic terroir expression and uncommon though not impenetrable deliciousness are the wines of Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot. Are the wines unusual? Yes, but not in the love it or hate it sense. Unlike most Jura producers, the Tissots shy away from the more typical oxidative styles that add sherry-like notes of bruised apples and toasted walnuts (described unhelpfully by the esoteric wine term “rancio”). Instead, these are unusual because of their precious rarity and surprising class. Once you pop the cork or dive a bit deeper, you discover the beauty in their uniqueness.
Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot make the argument that the region, its terroir and grapes are all that are needed to evoke these mysteries. Why encumber them further? We could label these an intro class to the Jura, since the wines are more approachable and comprehensible than many other estates. But that would be a disservice to the complexity, purity, and authenticity of these magical, unicorn wines.
VinopolNote for Champagne nerds: What does Champagne have to do with the Jura? In October, Chardonnay Rose (no accent) became the eighth authorized variety in the region, joining its more famous cousin Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier, and Arbane. While the Champagne versions won’t be ready for years, you can try it as a single-varietal wine from Tissot now!

Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Arbois ‘Rose Massale’ Chardonnay 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 91+ points “From four vines of pink Chardonnay that Tissot found planted on one hectare in his vineyards, he produced the 2022 Rose Massale, which shows larger and less reductive than some years. Not all 2022s Chardonnays are in bottle. It’s going to be a more immediate vintage of rounder wines with more ripeness and less acidity. Whereas 2021 was a complicated year for the variety, but the results were very good. The Pink Chardonnay is a little more aromatic, and this year, it’s a little more exotic but keeps the freshness, poise and balance.”

Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Arbois ‘Rose Massale’ Chardonnay 2023 750ml $69 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2023 Rose Massale was produced with the rare pink Chardonnay, a mutation whose grapes have a color like Gewürztraminer. Like many wines here, it’s 60% from clay soils and 40% from limestone, all very good terroirs, and the clay ones (like the ones in La Mailloche) give it a nice reduction. It’s a more structured wine, with a characterful nose, a little larger and more concentrated, open and generous, finer-boned than the 2022 but not as mineral as other vintages like 2020.”
Nicolas Greinacher-Vinous 91 points “The 2023 Arbois Chardonnay Rosé Massale checks in at 14% alcohol. Made from a mutation of Chardonnay where red and white berries can appear on the same bunch, the 2023 opens with ripe yellow apple, lemon flesh and floral undertones. Smooth and elegant, it packs plenty of vitality on the mid-palate and finishes with uplifting freshness and a focused close.”

Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Arbois Rouge DD Sans Soufre 2023 750ml $41.90 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “For Stéphane Tissot, 2023 was a very good year for reds. The wines are fruity and clean, delicate and crisp in a style he compared with 2016, even if the growing season was considerably warmer. The 2023 DD, a blend of terroirs, the equivalent in red to his white Patchwork, also blends the three red grapes: Trousseau, Pinot Noir and Poulsard. It is perfumed and attractive, with a distinct note of bitter almonds that makes it very attractive and made me go back to the glass over and over again to smell the wine. It is easy and pleasant, fine-boned, elegant, fresh and lovely, with contained ripeness and 13% alcohol, and it’s very pleasant to drink. 33,000 bottles produced.”

Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Poulsard Sur Lias Arbois 2022 750ml $44.50 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 points “The bottled 2022 Poulsard Vieilles Vignes was sourced from a different place than the previous vintage, because the year was so warm that the grapes were burning from the heat reflected by the soils, so he found a cold place on Lias soils. It has more Pupillin character, with notes of watermelon, blood orange and a wild profile, reminiscent of some of the wines from Overnoy, with some dusty tannins. The grapes were destemmed by hand, which is the traditional way for the variety, and had a three-month maceration. I think this is pretty successful for the vintage.”
Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Arbois Poulsard Vieilles Vignes 2023 750ml $49 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2023 Poulsard Vieilles Vignes is very pale and bright, not only in color but also in aromas and flavors. It has lots of finesse and elegance and comes through as clean and precise. It shows contained ripeness and a moderate 12.5% alcohol, which make it a light- to medium-bodied, fine-boned wine with very fine tannins.”
Bénédicte & Stéphane Tissot Arbois Trousseau Singulier 2022 750ml $49 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93-94 points “The 2022 Trousseau Singulier, still unbottled, was harvested a little later and also destemmed by hand, pressed and put into 600-liter barrels, but unlike Poulsard that likes cold, Trousseau likes heat. This has the textbook earthiness and the slightly dusty tannins that call for food.”
