Ambition and drive define Markus Molitor and his incredible wines. After 35 years at the helm of the family business, Markus remains one of the most respected winemakers in the world.

Molitor in the vineyardAs a towering figure in the Mosel, with an impressive, modern winery and holdings in almost every important vineyard in the region, Molitor crafts dozens of wines each year. He believes that every single sub-parcel and selective pick should be vinified to its utmost potential. He not only keeps specific vineyard blocks separate, but also specific passes through the vineyard. What results is a somewhat confusing, especially to those unfamiliar with German labeling conventions, but deeply rewarding portfolio of wines to explore.

Whether white capsule (dry), green capsule (off-dry), or gold capsule (fruity to nobly sweet), Markus’ wines represent some of the Mosel’s best. And thanks to his extensive holdings, Molitor offers German Riesling lovers with a passport to explore many of the region’s most important vineyards.

It’s no secret that we’ve long adored these wines, having stocked every bottle available since the 2015 vintage. And that’s excellent news for you: that means we can offer this massive array at rock-bottom prices. How to choose? Let us guide you through the wines village-by-village as we explore this excellent producer on our three-day sale!

At a sharp bend in the Mosel River is the village of Bernkastel, where we find Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. The name “Badstube” is in reference to the hot springs near the village that became famous during the Middle Ages. Despite the following naming conventions for a single-vineyard wine, Bernkasteler Badstube actually refers to the collection of six vineyards. Wines with this designation can come from any mix of the sites, though it would be an oversight to think of Bernkasteler Badstube as a mere village wine. Even the VDP designates it as a Grosse Lage, or Great Growth. The six vineyards include some of the most famous vineyards in the world of wine. The wines tend to be racy and floral with lively acidity and a long aging potential.

The tiny Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced “lie”) vineyard is a long strip of a vineyard that extends from a sharp bend in the river. The soils in Lay are blue slate, imparting rich texture and minerality to the wines. It rivals Doktor for the most prestigious vineyard in Bernkastel.

We’re offering all of our Molitor wines from the village of Bernkastel on our three-day sale. Stock up and explore the terroir-driven wines from one of German’s most famous winemakers!

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese ** Trocken (White Capsule) 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $51.90, that’s $49.31 at 5% off and $46.71 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The lime-green-golden 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese ** (White Capsule) is deep, intense and concentrated yet elegant and still precise and flinty on the nose. The attack on the palate is stunningly young and vital before the elegant and crystalline wine reveals its complexity and inner power. This is a tightly structured, very digestible and still edgy Auslese that needs another 5-6 years or so to settle and shine. This 2019 is enormously salty on the finish and highly promising. Bottled in September last year and tasted in May 2021.”

Molitor bottlesMarkus Molitor Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese ** Trocken (White Capsule) 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2020 Riesling Bernkasteler Lay Auslese ** (White Capsule) is pure, refined and fresh on the precise and concentrated but bright and shining, transcendental nose that is intense and ripe but doesn’t show any tropical fruit aromas. Crystalline, highly refined and saline on the palate, this is a rich and very intense Riesling whose electric acidity takes all the weight and concentration up a steep flight to heaven, where the wine flies possibly forever like a satellite around the globe. The finish is so juicy, so saline and so precise that one can’t leave the glass without a sense of wonder. So much finesse and intensity in one glass? 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 50 21 in July 2022.”

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese Feinherb (Green Capsule) 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The 2018 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese (Green Capsule) is very clear and intensely aromatic on the pure, elegant, flinty and only initially slightly reductive nose that displays very fine stone fruit and delicate slate aromas. Pure, round and piquant on the palate, this is a crystalline and nervy yet perfectly juicy, intense and elegant Badstube Spätlese with a persistently long and salty-piquant finish. The 2018 has stimulating grip and will age terrifically well over 30+ years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese * Feinherb (Green Capsule) 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2020 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese * (Green Capsule) is clear, deep and intense on the concentrated, mineral and lemon-scented nose that shows bright and fresh fruit and very fine broken slate aromas. Full-bodied, very intense and lush, with sweet fruit, this is an enormously salty, complex, very long, energetic and tensioned Badstube with a hint of caramel on the finessed and crystalline finish that also reveals laser-sharp but ripe acidity. The finish is very intense and concentrated but savory and stimulating. This Riesling is like a bright laser beam! But it is also very intense and concentrated. A promising wine that is made to be cellared for a minimum of 10 to 15 years. 10.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 64 21 in July 2022.”

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese ** Feinherb (Green Capsule) 2016 750ml Was $51.90, Displayed price $46, that’s $43.70 at 5% off and $41.40 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2016 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese ** (Green Capsule) offers a pretty clear and delicate, fresh and flinty bouquet with bright fruit aromas and clayey wet slate notes. On the palate, this is a tensioned, fresh, mineral and tightly woven Auslese in the medium sweet style. It’s truly piquant and fresh, and the ripe, concentrated fruit is well balanced by vibrating minerals and phenolic grip. The finish is very long and fine, with a lot of salinity and slatey freshness. This is an impressive wine, but you should be patient with it. Tasted March 2018.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Stunningly clear and pure on the citric-perfumed nose, the sweet 2013 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese *** is characterized by its laser-like precision and elegance, which is perfectly paired with its vibrant acidity and piquant minerality that lingers and makes this Auslese a memorable one.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a deep, pure, precise, smoky, highly concentrated yet refined and coolish nose of stewed stone fruits, candied lemons and grapefruits that intermingle with crushed stone and some leathery aromas. Lush and round on the generous but precise and highly finessed palate, this is an almost weightless Auslese with a honey-sweet yet piquant and salty finish. This is another laser-sharp but also sensual highlight of the vintage, not only at Markus Molitor. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Filled in 375-milliliter bottles, the 2019 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) opens with a fascinating, refined and aromatic bouquet of broken slate and botrytized raisins. Lush and fresh, with very fine grip, this is an utterly finessed and aromatic Auslese that is as rich and intense as it is weightless, frisky and salivating. Surely a picture-book Auslese from the Badstube. Tasted in May 2021.”

Eric Solomon Imports note
“Xarel-lo, Vermell Certified organic CCPAE and biodynamic DEMETER. The pale color of this rosé comes from a 48-hour maceration before pressing. With this additional skin contact, combined with the already high levels of antioxidants present in the juice of this variety, Mart cannot only be enjoyed in its youth (peaches and strawberries) but it has the capacity to develop for several years in the bottle as more pink peppercorn nuances emerge.”

Château Les Mesclances Cuvée Romane Rosé, Côtes de Provence 2020 750ml Was $24, Now $19, 8 bottles in stock now
“The 2020 Cotes de Provence Rose Romane is a blend of 42% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 18% Syrah. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, it’s a predictable pale salmon-hued wine, with vibrant notes of lime zest, alpine strawberries and hints of peach and melon. Medium-bodied, it’s crisp, clean and impeccably made, with a lasting finish. For the price, it’s a solid value.” -Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
Rosenthal Wine note “‘Romane’ Côtes de Provence Rosé From 20 year-old vines at the base of the hill overlooking the estate, the Romane is made up of 70% Grenache, along with Cinsault and Mourvedre, the latter of which provides a point of amertume (a fresh, bitter note) and a salinity that quickly draws one back to the wine. The Grenache spends a few hours macerating with the skins, providing an extra layer of depth and structure to this classic wine.”

Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Rosé, Rhone 2021 750ml Was $28, Now $21.90, 8 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 89 points
“The medium salmon-hued 2021 Gigondas Rose features scents of pink grapefruit, guava and melon. A blend of 50% Cinsault, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Grenache, it’s medium-bodied, with a lovely, silky texture and a long finish that echoes of crushed stone and paraffin.”
Importer note “From the lieu dit “La Moutte” this tiny production rosé is from mostly 45 year old Cinsault planted in 1970, and 10-15 year old Mourvèdre and Syrah. Cold maceration for 6 hours in the press and slow pneumatic pressing. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with occasional lees stirring. 70% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre. Soil: Red sandy clay soil with broken round stones (cailloux). Organic.”
