Weinbau Paetra

German Spirit

Oregon Soil
Arriving Tomorrow:

There’s a story that’s often told in the Oregon wine industry about how a man falls in love with wine, learns a lot about it and eventually moves here to make wine.  Occasionally, though, the details of that story are remarkable enough that you pay attention to the man and the wines he creates and that’s very true of Bill Hooper, founder of Paetra wines.

Bill was so entranced by great Riesling that he dropped (read:sold) everything and moved to Germany to pursue formal training and apprenticeship in the Pfalz region—without speaking German! The chutzpah that displays is evident in his next move—to scour the US for the best place to make (dry) Riesling and land on our very own Willamette Valley, where he moved and a few years later founded Weinbau Paetra.

The quality of the wines he makes immediately put him on the map as a Winemaker to Watch in Oregon.  The Riesling he’s made has been mostly traditional dry wines (along with one Kabinett style and one skin-contact ‘orange’ version) that are very much made in the Pfalz style.  One of the things that drew him to the Willamette Valley was that while vineyards with basalt soils are among the most expensive in Germany, the soil type is common here. The soils give wines with broad frames and powerful minerality—these are not shy or particularly fruity, but demonstrate a clear sense of place and captivating savoriness.

These are some of the most interesting white wines being made in Oregon—representing a vision that only a few share (Teutonic comes to mind, but Barnaby’s wines are fruitier).  We’ve scored a great deal on the remnants of the 2014 and 2015 wines available in the market, arising from a change of the winery’s wholesdale distribution, and are happy to present them to you today at extraordinarily sharp pricing.

Stonestreet

The Jewel of the Jackson Family

“Winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs has done a terrific job with these new releases from Stonestreet. The 2014 Chardonnays… are more than worthy follow ups to the 2013s, while the 2013 Cabernets show once again just how special this vintage is. As always, both the Chardonnays and Cabernets are big, structured wines endowed with the considerable mountain character. Even though Stonestreet is part of the Jackson Family’s empire, these wines seldom receive the attention they deserve… The Estate is a fabulous introduction to the Stonestreet Chardonnays.” –Antonio Galloni

“Over the last half-dozen or so years, the Jackson family have dramatically and consistently upgraded the quality of Stonestreet Estate Vineyards… If my recollection is correct, the late Jess Jackson considered this estate one of the true jewels in his extensive vineyard holdings.” – Robert Parker

Stonestreet Alexander Mountain Estate Chardonnay, Alexander Valley 2014 750ML ($31.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Stonestreet Alexander Mountain Estate Chardonnay, Alexander Valley 2014 750ML ($359.95) $249 pre-arrival special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)
Robert Parker 92 points “The 2014 Stonestreet Estate Chardonnay is superb, with plenty of white peach and poached pear notes, beautiful purity, a lusty, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, subtle French oak, and terrific fruit and honeysuckle. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.”

The Cadaster Master:

Single Cask Wines from Peter Lauer

Florian Lauer (of Weingut Peter Lauer) is one of the rising superstars in the German wine scene.  The wines are racy and bright with exceptional quality from dry to sweet in a way that is only found at addresses like Donnhoff and Keller.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Lauer wines, you owe it to yourself to try them. All of the wines featured today come from the Ayler Kupp vineyard, which is located in the Saar valley, near the Mosel.  There are a bunch of single-parcel wines, which are dry, that carry the name of the specific part of the vineyard on them—and these are the ones that you should try to see the full glory of dry Riesling from the Saar.

They also make some traditional Kabinett and Spatlese, as well as a wine called “Senior” that’s made in the style that Florian’s grandfather loved to drink.  All the wines have a Fass (cask) number on them, which should give you an idea on how much of this wine is made (not a lot).

Below are four of the twelve Peter Lauer wines that are in-stock now:

Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($24.95) $19 special, 28 bottles available
Case-12 Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($279.95) $219 special, 3 cases available (that’s only $18.25/bottle!)
Importer note “You all know by now the stratospheric work Florian is doing in the Saar.  This has always been the ambassador wine from the winery but this vintage elevates to Senior levels of complexity.”

Peter Lauer Senior Fass 6 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles available
David Schildknecht – Vinous 91 points “Sourced from old vines at the western end of the Ayler Kupp, the “Senior” comes closer in 2015 than in other recent vintages to this bottling’s original inspiration, namely the sort of decidedly dry-tasting Riesling that appealed to the generation of Florian Lauer’s grandfather. Despite only narrowly breaching the 10-gram limit of legal Trockenheit, this bottling weighs in at a mere 11.5 percent alcohol, an alcoholic levity entirely compatible with textural richness and decidedly ripe fruit flavors. Brightly juicy, zesty lime and tangerine – pungently signaled on the nose – mingle with crunchy apple and succulent, piquantly pit-inflected cherry on a subtly oily palate, leading to a vibrantly sustained, consummately refreshing and stone-inflected finish.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best price is $24.99

Peter Lauer Neuenberg Fass 17 Riesling, Mosel 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 33 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points “The 2015er Ayler Kupp Neuenberg Fass 17 is fermented off-dry from parcels in the former single vineyard Neuberg situated just below the Ayler Herrenberger. It offers a gorgeous nose of white and yellow peach, ginger, herbs and spices. The wine is beautifully balanced on the palate, where grip provides great structure and adds to the saline feel in the long finish. This only needs a few years to develop its inner balance and shine.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Peter Lauer Fass 8 Ayler Kupp Kabinett, Mosel 2014 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special, 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 91-92 points ‘The 2014 Ayler Kupp Kabinett from Florian Lauer is really a lovely and quite classic example of this Prädikat, with lovely acidity and minerality providing a fine filigree to the wine and a nice sense of reserve out of the blocks as well. The very classy nose wafts from the glass in a mix of green apple, tart orange, slate, lovely smokiness and a touch of dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, pure and focused, with a good core, bright acids, a nice touch of sweetness on the attack and lovely length and grip on the elegant and nascently complex finish. This is quite approachable now, but still a touch primary, and I would be inclined to give it at least a few years in the cellar to develop its secondary layers of complexity. 2019-2035+.” JG

Azienda Agricola Paitin:

History in the Folded Hills of Piedmont

Understanding how a family’s tie to their land can influence their wines is terribly important when tasting and appreciating old-world producers. When the family’s ownership over their vineyards predates their country’s unification, you start to understand their grasp of the nuances that can be squeezed out of 42 acres of Italian hillsides.

The Elia family purchased their vineyards in 1796. From atop the hill where the winery sits, you can overlook the two main vineyard sites and understand the difference in microclimate, soil type and techniques for farming. The Bricco di Nieve side of the hill is steep, breezy and has beautiful older vines that produce the gorgeous sori Paitin Barbaresco. The other side of the hill has the looser iron rich soil that is the Serra vineyard. Tasting the two Barbaresco side by side is a lesson in site location and the unique qualities that can be shown, just a stone’s throw away.

Secondo Pasquero-Elia and his two sons, Giovanni and Silvano have enlisted enologist Dante Scaglione to draw even more from such an amazing site. The results offer a glimpse into the future of the winery and the wines to come. The wines are solid, deep, and built to last – echoing the family and their tie to their home and spectacular vineyards.

Now is your unique chance to study this slice of Italian history – in stock now:

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serra’, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($41.95) $31.90 special, 28 bottles available
Case-12 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serra’, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($419.95) $359 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Wine Spectator 94 points “Rich and velvety, yet also vibrant and complex, this red boasts floral, berry, anise, leather and mineral flavors. Harmonious, this turns slightly chewy in texture on the lingering finish. Best from 2017 through 2027. 1,000 cases made.” WS
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, spices and mint race across the palate in the 2011 Barbaresco Serra. This is one of the most intense, tannic 2011 Barbarescos readers will come across. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2011 is going to need considerable patience. Hints of sweet tobacco, mint and anise add nuance on the layered, super-expressive finish. The 2011 Serra spent two years in 50-hectoliter casks.” AG

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, mint and leather are some of the notes that emerge from the 2012 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin. The Sorì Paitin is quite a bit more complex than it was from barrel, largely because the bottled wine is composed of approximately 30% wine that was originally destined for the Vecchie Vigne. As a result, this is one of the few 2012s I tasted that has real upside potential, even if it is relatively approachable today.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Vecchie Vigne’ Sori Paitin, Barbaresco DOCG 2010 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 22 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2010 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin Vigne Vecchie hits the palate with fabulous depth and intensity. Savory herbs, smoke, tobacco, incense, menthol and licorice race out of the glass in an intense, structured Barbaresco loaded with class, energy and pure power. There is plenty to look forward to, once the tannins soften a bit. The 2010 has closed down pretty dramatically since the last time I tasted it, about a year ago. Readers will have to be patient. The 2010 spent a total of 30 months in cask.”

Arriving in June

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serra’, Barbaresco DOCG 2013 750ML ($37.95) $29 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Crushed flowers, raspberries, dried rose petal, mint and sweet spices are some of the signatures in Paitin’s 2013 Barbaresco Serra. Soft, feminine and gracious in style, the 2013 offers lovely overall balance, striking inner perfume and tons of near-term appeal. A closing burst of energy on the finish adds to the wine’s considerable appeal. Paitin gave the Serra 18 months in cask. The decision to remove seeds has yielded an especially soft, easygoing wine that can be enjoyed young.”

La Jota Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 2013 1.5L ($179.95) $136 pre-arrival special
La Jota Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain 2013 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 9 bottles available here now
Decanter 98 points “Resplendent aromas of voluptuous blackcurrant and plum. This is certainly rich and concentrated, yet it all seems to be in balance, with firm chocolatey tannins supporting the dense and solid fruit. (Feb 2017)”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This full-bodied, concentrated wine shows plenty of power in its bringing together of the variety with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. With a huge presence on the palate that lingers and stays in one’s brain, it shows a reductive quality of toasted oak along with black pepper, bark and leather saddle,. It’s a wine to enjoy from a giant leather chaise, if possible.”

Andremily Wines Syrah #1, Santa Barbara County 2012 750ML ($299.95) $249 special, 1 bottle available
Andremily Wines Syrah #1, Santa Barbara County 2012 1.5L ($599.95) $499 special, 1 magnum available
Wine Advocate 97 points “The inaugural release, Jim’s 2012 No. 1 is about as good a first release as you’re likely to find anywhere in the wine world today. A blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Viognier and 2% Mourvedre (the Syrah and Viognier were cofermented) that spent 25 months in 58% new French oak, it offers extraordinary notes of sweet black fruits, licorice, scorched earth, spring flowers and beautifully integrated oak that only shows as hints of creaminess and vanilla. Weightless, fresh, lively and nicely focused, yet also rockingly full-bodied and layered, with an awesome texture, this is a gorgeous Syrah that’s hard to resist now, yet I suspect will continue to knock it out of the park for another decade.”

Colgin Cellars IX Estate Syrah, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($349.95) $299 special, 1 bottle available
Robert Parker 98 points “The 2013 Syrah IX Estate may turn out to be better. It’s not as complex from a nuanced standpoint as the 2012, but it has possibly greater intensity than its sibling. Its blackberry fruit, charcoal, acacia flowers, grilled meats and beef tartare notes are all beautifully presented in a pure, succulent, opulent style. This is amazing sTuff, and a great example of a singular style of Syrah from Napa Valley. Drink now-2028.”

Hartford Family Winery Hartford Court Arrendell Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2014 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 12 bottles available
Robert Parker 96 points “what is usually their finest Pinot Noir hails from Hartford’s oldest vines, planted with the Martini clone in 1975. The 2014 Pinot Noir Arrendell Vineyard is often not picked until after Halloween, as it is one of the coldest vineyards in the Russian River Valley. Its spicy, complex notes of allspice, sassafras, sweet black cherries and Asian plum sauce are exotic, fragrant and intense. The superb fragrance is matched by an exotic, silky, fleshy wine with dark berries (especially ripe raspberries and black cherries), soft tannins, and full body. This is a head-turning “wow” Pinot Noir to drink over the next decade.”

Hundred Acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($519.95) $449 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 100 points “The perfect 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan spent 32 months in French oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. Like all of the Woodbridge wines, it can be noted for its inky/bluish purple color, extraordinary fragrance of white flowers, crème de cassis, blackberry and graphite. Totally opulent, I always thought the wine tasted more like the great Pomerols, which are made mostly from Merlot, versus Woodbridge’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. But this vineyard has a lot of clay in it that seems to provide a silkiness to the tannins. This is a beautifully balanced, full-throttle and highly extracted wine with no hard edges and a finish of a good 45-50 seconds. The fruit character is still vibrant and intense, despite the 32 months of oak age. Drink it over the next 30 years.”

Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 18 bottles available
James Suckling 95 points “I am always a fan of this wine with its dusty, red-tile and rust character, which underlines the fruit and ripe tannins. Full-bodied, powerful and tannic, all the way up to the flavorful finish. Give it three or four years to soften.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The average price is $66

Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Gnarly Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 2014 750ML ($54.95) $41.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Robert Parker 95 points “Another fabulous wine, although there’s not much of it, is the 2014 Zinfandel Gnarly Vine Monte Rosso Vineyard from this fabulous first-growth vineyard in Sonoma. This is a blend of 97% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah aged in 66% new French oak, 16% new American oak and the rest used. Only 500 cases were made of this whopper, which is full-bodied, has great intensity with a stunning nose of black fruits, pepper, Mediterranean herbs and spice. Good natural acidity gives focus and vibrancy to this wine that comes from vines as old as 120 years. This is a full-bodied classic Zinfandel at its very best, from one of the great vineyards in California. Finished alcohol is 16.2%, so this is a heck of a mouthful.”
