Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 93 points “Fantastic brilliance and a wealth of delicate stone-fruit and citrus aromas, also floral notes! Barely medium-bodied, but with all the attributes that make a dry Nahe riesling a thing of beauty to behold. Drink or hold.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 100 points “This dry riesling has a hypnotic beauty that leaves no doubt how this wine redefines what peachy means in the context of this grape variety. As it aerates, a wealth of wild berry and flower nuances develop and expand. Given the mind-bending concentration of this wine, it is staggeringly fresh and absolutely precise. Then comes the finish, which is like a prima ballerina dancing on pointe off into the distance. Drink from release.”

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “Ripe and concentrated, but also quite austere with stacks of spice and grapefruit character; everything from the juice to the pith and zest! A seriously dry riesling, but with moderate acidity. Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2023 3L Displayed Price: $389, that’s $369.55 at 5% off and $350.10 at 10% off, 1 double-magnum in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96-98 points “The 2022 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is from a steep site of volcanic origin with porphyry and melaphyr. A touch of yeastiness still plays on the shy, tentative nose. The palate comes in with stony saltiness, a tingling sense of juicy lemon intensifying the salty impression even more. Great concentration aligns with lightness and energetic linearity. The bright acidity has a serene luminosity and ripe yet crystal clear smoothness that seems to stretch away into eternity, lighting the way, gliding along, dynamic, optimistic, promising and full of light. (Bone-dry)”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 99 points “The restrained beauty of the peachiness in the nose is hard to describe, but easy to be overwhelmed by! On the compact palate this has staggering concentration yet still manages to be very light on its feet. The finish is blade-runner sharp, but the blade also flashes in the sun. Breathtaking drive and energy for the very warm and dry vintage. Then comes the remarkable wet-stone minerality and you can’t wait for the next sip. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2023 6L Displayed Price: $1,099, that’s $1044.05 at 5% off and $989.10 at 10% off, 1 six-liter bottle available
*****In-Store pick up only. Shipping note available*****
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 100 points “Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hollenpfad Im Muhlenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points “What a dramatic wine this is, at once ripe and austere, super-stony and super-herbal with a touch of peppermint. Compact core in spite of the sleek and very focused body. Electric freshness at the vibrant finish although the acidity is anything but dominant. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff ‘Felsenturmchen’ Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese “R”, Nahe 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $139, that’s $132.05 at 5% off and $125.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points “Here’s a breathtakingly vivid riesling Spatlese for the hot and sunny 2018 vintage, that’s just beginning to pick up some toasty complexity from bottle age, but also notes of dried flowers and herbs plus hints of licorice and candied citrus. It expands and expands with aeration. Staggering grapefruit and lime zest freshness at the very long smoky finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese, Nahe 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “When worlds collide. The tension between the cool, dark side (think Darth Vader) and the enormous brightness of the stone fruit (think Luke Skywalker) makes this astonishing riesling Spatlese extremely compelling. The most beautiful pineapple and grapefruit aromas. Fabulous freshness at the stunningly straight and pure finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spätlese, Nahe 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $145, that’s $137.75 at 5% off and $130.50 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 97 points “The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet) (Drink between 2034-2070).”

Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “Very attractive nose of peach and spice with just a touch of exotic fruits. Rich and ripe with a touch of mid-palate creaminess as it rolls gently over you, the power very understated. Delicate slatey minerality at the long silky finish. Drink from release.”
Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Stromberg Grosses Gewächs Riesling, Nahe 2021 1.5L Displayed Price: $259, that’s $246.05 at 5% off and $233.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98-99 points “The 2021 Stromberg GG offers a bright and pure, enormously radiant and earthy/herbal bouquet of crushed porphyry rocks and concentrated Riesling berry aromas intermingled with iodine notes. Great purity mixed with intensity and complexity. Full-bodied, refined and enormously salty on the palate, this is a compact, fresh and challenging dry Riesling with elegant and rich fruit, great density and no makeup at all. This is a bone dry but juicy wine that represents a long-distance runner with salty grip and tension. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2023 1.5L Displayed Price: $175, that’s $166.25 at 5% off and $157.50 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2023 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett opens with substantial depth and a brilliant bouquet of wet slate. The fruit is intense but not dominating, thanks to the flintiness and savoriness of the Himmelreich terroir. On the palate, this is a mouth-filling, dense and complex Kabinett with ripe, elegant and juicy fruit intertwined with very fine phenols and an ethereal slate thread that gives this Kabinett an enormous length and animation. This will be a superb gastronomic wine after a decade of bottle age, although the 2023 already drinks beautifully today. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024 from AP 2 24.”

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2015 1.5L Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points “This Auslese harvested at 102° Oechsle is still marked by some residual notes from spontaneous fermentation at first. However, these quickly give way to exotic scents of mango and papaya as well as mint, candied grapefruit and pineapple. The wine proves juicy and creamy even if still on the sweet side on the palate at this early stage. However, the finish already hints at greatness to come as grapefruit zest brings freshness in the long finish of this superb Auslese from the Scharzhofberg.”

Weingut Wasenhaus Spatburgunder Mohlin, Baden 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $279, that’s $265.05 at 5% off and $251.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Vom Boden Importer Note “The Wasenhaus Möhlin is grown from a very shallow and poor limestone clay parcel of the Ehrenstetter Ölberg, positioned below the Kanzel with a more southeastern exposure. Thus the site is quite a bit hotter and more exposed to the sun than the Kanzel; the wine is among the most powerful, most lavish and expansive of the Wasenhaus Pinot Noirs. Perhaps this is the most complete of the Pinots? The Möhlin is mainly German clones with different ages and origins and some French selection massale; due to the steepness here the site is worked completely by hand. Fermented 60% with whole clusters, with a bit of carbonic fermentation and then transferred to an open-vat for a classic fermentation with minimal punchdowns. The wine was aged in mainly used French oak barrels for about 16 months.”

Cappellano’s Barolo Chinato
“Cappellano’s Barolo Chinato, which is more on the savory side of things, is a personal favorite.” -Antonio Galloni
If you’re looking to experience the finest aromatized wine available, look no further than the original home of Barolo Chinato. This is essentially a vermouth crafted from some of the highest quality wine, imbued with a secret blend of spices and herbs with a dash of sugar and alcohol to round it out. This can be aged for decades, much like a Barolo, which allows the tannins to mellow and the flavors to combine into infinite complexities.
We have just three bottles each from the lauded vintages of 2016 and 2018. Lay the 2016 down while you enjoy the more bombastic 2018! (The vintage is indicated by a lot code on the bottle.)
In Stock & On Sale Now:
Cappellano Barolo Chinato, Piedmont (2016) 750ml $99 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Cappellano Barolo Chinato, Piedmont (2018) 750ml $79 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “It was the closing of 1870 when Giuseppe Cappellano, pharmacist of Serralunga d’Alba with a shop in Turin, perfected the original recipe of Barolo Chinato marketing as “medicinal and anti-malaric liniment” what would shortly after become one of the classics of Italian oenology. We talk of recipe and not of formula because this great aromatic wine for meditation is born out of artisanal wisdom, handed down in our family generation after generation, which has much in common with the knowledge of the land and countryside culture. The preparation is well-known ‒ the extract of china calissaia mixed with other aromatic herbs, sugar, and alcohol is added to the aged Barolo ‒ whereas the list of spices used for the aroma is secret. The equilibrium of contrasts, the gusto-olfactive complexity, and an endless persistence constitute the charm of a wine which is seductive as few others, capable of sustaining the nigh-impossible match with dark chocolate.”
Importer Note “Those who have tasted great Chinato know of its shocking complexity, and there are simply none better than Cappellano’s. Trying to pick out ingredients is a fun game, and you can always catch a few: cardamom, cinnamon, chocolate? (You’d swear there’s chocolate, but you’ll never know for sure…) But the fun is in the mystery. It drinks beautifully on its own at room temp, or on ice, or as the base of an unforgettable cocktail, and a bottle stays good once opened for a very long time… Fewer people are aware that it was [winemaker and owner Augusto Cappellano’s] ancestor Giuseppe, a doctor by trade, who invented the incredible elixir known as Barolo Chinato toward the end of the 19th century Augusto to this day uses the same enormous mortar and pestle used by Giuseppe to crush the spices, and consults the very sheet of written instructions Giuseppe drafted in the late 1800s.” -Rosenthal Wines
