Cantina del Pino:

Owners and winemakers at Cantina del Pino, the Vacca family has been a part of Italian winemaking for over 100 years. Domizio Cavazzo established the estate vineyard in 1894. He became one of the first winemakers to produce Nebbiolo under the name Barbaresco, over 70 years before the creation of the official appellation in 1966.

An advocate for regional farmers, Cavazzo’s vineyard was well known, recognizable by the large Mediterranean pine tree he planted on the day his first son was born. In 1912, the Vacca family took over the estate and have worked the land for four generations, becoming known for world  class wines from the historic vineyard. They use the pine tree as inspiration for their label, giving the vineyard the name Cantina Del Pino, or ‘winery of the pine’. Like Wine Advocate will tell you, year after year “Cantina del Pino is a great source for top-notch wines from Barbaresco.”

Paitin:

Paitin is the head of the class for Piedmont value—at least for now. Like every other great value region, one day the world will wake up and notice how wonderful these wines are. With Dante Scaglione of Bruno Giacosa fame serving as the family’s enologist, the incredible estate vineyards yield some of the greatest wines in all of Piedmont.

The winemaking here is all traditional (with just a brief flirtation with modern techniques in the 90’s). The wines undergo gentle pump over and cap submersion during the weeks-long maceration. The wines then undergo an extended aging in neutral barrels and botti from Slavonia and Austria for up to three years.

The results offer a glimpse into the future of the winery and the wines to come. The wines are solid, deep, and built to last in your cellar – echoing the family’s tie to their home and spectacular holdings within the Serraboella cru.

“The Cantina del Pino 2021 Barbaresco (with 12,000 bottles made) is perfumed and nuanced with pretty fruit tones of cassis and dried cherry and an equally important floral side with rose potpourri and iris root. The wine starts fermentation in both stainless steel and oak vats, and it matures in large oak casks for 24 months before going into bottle. It glides over the palate with polished tannins and a lean to mid-weight mouthfeel. I’d give this vintage a little more bottle age to allow it to flesh out further.”

“Very true to the Nebbiolo grape, the Cantina del Pino 2018 Barbaresco Albesani reveals an especially bright and lifted character with tart berry fruit and crushed roses. Poised for long cellar aging, the wine is coiled tight in terms of tannins and texture at this young stage in its drinking window. Give it ample time to unwind.”

“This is the wine that best captures the spirit of Cantina del Pino. The 2021 Barbaresco Ovello draws its fruit from nearby the winery at 300 meters in elevation on limestone marl and silt. Aged in large oak casks for a long 24 months, it shows delicate fruit tones of cassis and dried cherry with blue flower and grilled herb. This mid-weight vintage delivers a higher alcohol content at 15%. Production is 5,400 bottles.”

Antonio Galloni-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The 2004 Barbaresco Sori Paitin is intense and powerful in its expression of dark fruit, spices, earthiness and tar. Made in a pure, bold style, it is one of the more closed, shut down 2004 Barbarescos and will require at least a few years in bottle before revealing its truest potential.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The family that owns the Paitin estate lost its patriarch, Secondo Pasquero Elia, as this wine was being readied for release, and he would have been proud of the way this turned out. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is glossy and polished with a super fine and delicate quality of fruit. It just glides over the palate as if it were on skates. That beautiful forward momentum is driven by light cassis, dried cherry, iron skillet, candied orange peel and crushed flowers. The finish is exceptionally smooth and elegant. Complimenti.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 97 points
“A mix of plum, cherry, juniper, eucalyptus and earth flavors highlights this dense red, which borders on powerful, yet with a supple texture and vibrant acidity keeping everything well-defined and driving the extensive finish. Beautifully balanced and complex. Best from 2028 through 2046. 917 cases made, 220 cases imported.”
