The Impeccable Nahe Wines of Weingut Dönnhoff

Though the Mosel might get all the attention, the Nahe region of Germany offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. Anyone who knows their wines knows that this compliment is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, one we stock by the pallet-load. And we’re not the only ones obsessed. Folks frequently tell us that a bottle of aged Hermannshohle GG or the humble yet delicious Estate Trocken or the fiercely mineral and refined Oberhauser Brucke Spätlese was THE Riesling that sparked their passion for German terroir (that last was mine :). Despite their extensive lineup, there’s rarely a wine made here that isn’t the finest of its type and terroir each vintage.

Even the entry-level wines are nothing to shrug at, offering unrivalled complexity for a modest entry fee. From there, they produce dozens of options from their vineyards ranging from bone dry to nobly sweet, ethereal to luscious, and austere to hedonistic. The dry options top out at the GG, short for Grosses Gewächs, which is a powerful, bone-dry wine from one of Germany’s Grand Cru vineyards.

These are wines for any occasion, at prices that still suggest the producer inhabits that weird status of insider secret despite receiving heaps of praise, massive scores, and a devote following for over a decade. Stock up and enjoy, you’ll be in good company, especially during out three-day sale.

“For a bone-dry riesling this has a stunning juiciness that is hard to resist. The spot-on balance of fruit, moderate alcohol and lively acidity makes you want to dance for joy! Wide spectrum of stone and citrus fruits. Then comes the very long and elegant finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Grapelive 94 points
“The pristine and steely medium bodied palate shows of lime blossom, green apple, tart apricot, quince and tangerine, along with quinine, chamomile, almond, herb, flinty mineral spice, wet rock, lemon oil and saline. Zingy and youthfully energetic this Riesling also has the signature purity and elegance you’d expect of a Dönnhoff and it is complex enough to thrill the most jaded of Riesling lovers. There’s more to come with patience I believe and while I might be hard pressed not to enjoy this one right away, there should be extra rewards for those who wait, it should get another few years in bottle to fully express itself.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $95, that’s $90.25 at 5% off and $85.50 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now

“What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

James Suckling 100 points
“Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hollenpfad Im Muhlenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points
“What a dramatic wine this is, at once ripe and austere, super-stony and super-herbal with a touch of peppermint. Compact core in spite of the sleek and very focused body. Electric freshness at the vibrant finish although the acidity is anything but dominant. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

“Stand back as this riesling lightning strike arrives. Complex nose of dried flowers and summer meadows. Ripe and juicy, but also very elegant and crisp with stunning mineral freshness at the very long pointed finish. Delicious, but also excellent potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

“Brimming with tart-peach, ripe-gooseberry and lemon aromas, this is such a fresh and delightful Kabinett. Who could resist? Sleek and light in body with stunning freshness and purity that pulls you back for more. From the cool plateau of this site, which is within the town of Bad Kreuznach. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points
“Here’s a breathtakingly vivid riesling Spatlese for the hot and sunny 2018 vintage, that’s just beginning to pick up some toasty complexity from bottle age, but also notes of dried flowers and herbs plus hints of licorice and candied citrus. It expands and expands with aeration. Staggering grapefruit and lime zest freshness at the very long smoky finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Pure, precise and bright on the nose, with delicately flinty and spicy aromas, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is a fabulously piquant and stimulating Spätlese with mineral intensity, complexity, grip and tension, as if there were electric wires in this wine. It’s enormously vital and stimulating. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spätlese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 31 bottles in stock now

Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 97 points
“The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet) (Drink between 2034-2070).”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points
“Such an exotic nose with a slew of passion fruit, mangosteen and King Alfonso mango. Compact and concentrated, but the more important things are the coolness and gracefulness of this moderately sweet Auslese that turns in a dark, “earthy” direction at the powerful finish. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2023 375ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 6 half-bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points
“The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese was selected at the same time as the Spätlese. Dönnhoff says that for him, Auslese is merely a more concentrated Spätlese. He notes that passerillage also plays a part here. Slight smoke and Reine Claude plum compote on the nose continue straight to the palate, edged with beautiful lemon brightness. The 2023 shows gorgeous depth, deep lemon and gentle sweetness. A touch of herbal tisane adds a minty edge, exquisitely light, precise and sweet. This wine is a paradigm of lightness and elegance. (Sweet).”

Weingut Donnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Weingut Donnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2021 375ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 2 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Pressed with whole bunches in a basket press for about five hours and vinified in a single halbstück (650 liter), the 2021 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese is one of the rare botrytis wines of the vintage, and it opens with a clear, precise and aromatic bouquet with candied pink grapefruit aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense, generous and salty, piquant and delicate yet also rich and sweet but light and lifted Auslese with great balance and elegance. A fabulous, delicate and fine, juicy and filigreed Auslese. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Thibaud Boudignon

Thibaud Boudignon leads a new generation taking Chenin Blanc to glorious heights. The Savennières-based producer has rare gift of taking all of Chenin’s energetic richness and compressing it into electric minerality. Originally from Bordeaux, Boudignon established his credentials by working at the legendary Burgundy house, Philippe Charlopin, and at the highly-regarded Loire producer, Chateau Soucherie. His devotion to meticulous farming under biodynamic standards in addition to his masterful technical skill as a winemaker have made him a cult figure almost overnight.

“Thibaud Boudignon is a recent entry to Savennières, having started his project in 2009, but oh, my, the purity of his wines is impeccable… It may only be a young domaine, but the clarity of the wines made from these young vines is truly exciting. I look forward to the vines maturing further.” -Rebecca Gibb MW, September 2022

Yohan Castaing-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2022 Anjou Blanc from Thibaud Boudignon reveals a perfumed, exotic bouquet with aromas of green mango, pineapple, pear and spices intertwined with a touch of toast. More depth and fleshier than the 2021, it’s medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture and a delicately bitter finish. 30,000 bottles produced.”

Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc ‘a Francoise..’ 2022 750ml $74.50 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 points
“Made from a small parcel in the village of Saint-Lambert, the 2022 Anjou Blanc à Francois(e) is a mouth-filling style without any heaviness. The generosity of the 2022 season has been curbed, and there’s a nervousness and slightly reductive nature that keeps it tight. Expect an attractive sourness from the acidity and salinity. The finish has a nice twist of savory character with 20% new oak (500-liter and cigar format). Time is needed here to ameliorate.”

Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de Fremine 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $86, that’s $81.70 at 5% off and $77.40 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de Fremine 2021 1.5L $179 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Yohan Castaing-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2021 Savennières Clos de Frémine opens with aromas of pear, rose, green mango, ripe orchard fruits and spring flowers. It is a full-bodied, intense and bright wine with a chiseled, crystalline, elegantly tense palate. The flinty structuring extract adds a unique character to the wine, and its pure minerality is impressive. Hide bottles for seven to eight years and enjoy over the following decades.”

Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de la Hutte 2022 750ml $119 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 97 points
“Although it’s ungenerous on the nose, the 2022 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is tender and generous in the mouth, welcoming you in. There’s a cloud of gently handled fruit that embraces the palate, but it does so in an elegant and light-on-its-feet way. Texturally, it’s seamless and coats the mouth with fine texture. In terms of flavor, expect salty, briny notes and citrus tones alongside a touch of spice and nutty oak on the finish. This is a wine that seems to be able to take a deep, calming breath and become more complete.”

Thibaud Boudignon Rosé de Loire 2023 750ml $24 special, 15 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“A noble, supremely saline rosé with an exquisitely delicate texture. Made like a white wine to preserve minerality and structure. The wine is full of bright flavors of wild raspberries, blood orange zest, and red currant, all in a refreshingly silky package.”
