Chateauneuf-du-Pape
The Southern Rhone region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the king when it comes to power and impact. These wines are loaded to the hilt with aromatics, tannins, bombast, and terroir. Even the whites hit like no other.
What makes these so delicious?
This is the home of GSM blends, the trio of grapes (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) that comprise the majority of CDP wines. Grenache typically is the base with proportions of the other two varying widely between producers. Rustic herbal and rich spice notes frame the red and black fruit aromas typical to the wines.
You’ll find plenty of terroir here, especially among the top estates, where vines are grown in poor, stony soils that impart deep and dark mineral notes.
Don’t look for shy beauties here: the wines typically clock in at over 14% alcohol with lush tannins. Though Chateauneufs have an excellent track record for cellaring, they show magnificently throughout their long life.

Winery Note “Original blend of the 6 grape varieties of the Appellation: Grenache, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Piquepoul and Picardan, certified organic. “It’s my little marvel!” according to Cyril the winegrower…Its freshness and its aromas of flowers and white-fleshed fruits make it a gourmet wine.”

Decanter 96 points “A deep, quite herbal expression, with liquorice and crushed blueberries to the cassis fruit. Full-bodied, powerfully fruited, dense and deep. Really mouthcoating, intense fruit. The tannins are ripe, fine and plentiful, all saturated in blackberry juice on a long finish. Certainly one of the more successful Châteauneufs this year. Will age well. A Mourvèdre-led expression of Beaucastel – it contains more than usual, at least 35% and probably more. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudre”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “Another beautiful wine from Laurent, his 2020 Chāteauneuf Du Pape is a classic blend of 82% Grenache, 5% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, and the rest Vaccarese and Counoise, all from the northern part of the appellation, aged in tank. Perfumed red fruits, rose petals, spice, and sappy, peppery garrigue all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless 2020 with silky tannins, wonderful balance, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years in the cellar to hit the early stages of its drink window, where it should keep nicely for over a decade.”
Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “Moving to the reds and 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre, the base 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a beauty and boasts appealing notes of spiced red and black fruits, cedar, and garrigue. Full-bodied, ripe and undeniably sexy, it’s going to benefit from a year or three in the cellar and drink nicely for over a decade.”

Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 35 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95+ points “The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines takes things up a notch on the serious scale and has a much more concentrated, focused, structured style. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that saw 50% new barrels, it offers a rich, concentrated, focused texture, notes of black raspberries, roasted garrigue, pepper, and tons of minerality, building tannins, and outstanding length. The new oak is beautifully integrated, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s one of those wines that has a kiss of modern character yet stays firmly planted in the Southern Rhône.”

Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points “The 2017 Chāteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a bigger, richer, more opulent wine. Beautiful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets, all flow to a full-bodied, Chāteauneuf Du Pape that has a voluptuous, sexy texture, brilliant depth of fruit, fine tannins, and a purity of fruit that’s hard to find in this vintage. It’s a thrill a minute, and while it’s approachable today, it will keep for 15-20 years. 416 cases.”

Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94-96 points “A bigger, richer wine than the 2018, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Bravay boasts a deeper purple/plum color as well as a powerful bouquet of smoked black fruits, roasted garrigue, black licorice, and ground pepper. This rich, full-bodied wine has loads of Provençal character, a stacked mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and provide upwards of two decades of prime drinking. It’s beautifully done and well worth seeking out. The blend is 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and Bourboulenc, from the Cabrières and La Gardiole lieux-dits, brought up all in concrete.”

Wine Spectator 94 points “Rich and ripe but fresh and light on its feet, with a seductive, silky texture to the mix of cherry puree, raspberry reduction and mulled plum flavors. Shows anise, black tea and incense notes that lend a perfumed air all the way through the warm earth-tinged finish. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Best from 2023 through 2038. 2,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “This has so much power and meaty depth for the 2021 vintage, also stacks of healthy tannins that give it great intensity at the very long and complete finish. It’s packed with licorice, tar and stony character that makes it hard to pull yourself away from its compelling hold. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”
Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Imperiale 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 96-98 points “Tasted from the concrete tank, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale is reassuringly on form, with intricate herbal nuances overlaid on ripe purple raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied, silky and plush, with soft tannins cushioning the lengthy finish, this should be a real beauty to enjoy over the course of two decades.”
Saint Cosme Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2019 750ml Was $59, Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “Modern and stylish, offering an engaging mix of raspberry puree, warm baking spices and red licorice, with vanilla highlights. A beam of iron minerality brings shape and balance to this version, while invigorating acidity and tannins drive the energy. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. —J.M.”

Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93 points “Delivering a generous cascade of attractive ripe fig and cherry pie flavors, this red is grounded by serious cast iron, mineral power. Reveals engaging scents of dried lavender, tea leaves and cured tobacco that add complexity through the well-hewn, perfectly chewy close. Delicious. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Nicolas Greinacher-Vinous 90 points “Downright refined, the 2021 Chāteauneuf-du-Pape displays bright aromas of predominantly red fruits, black cherry, earth and cedar. Medium to full-bodied and spicy, the well-structured palate offers juicy fruit and concludes with a persistent finish. It checks in at 14.7% alcohol, one percent less than the 2020. (Drink between 2025-2036).”

Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 91+ points “Saint Siffrein’s 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape is rather light in hue, but it boasts attractive black cherry compote aromas, plus hints of cedar and vanilla. Mainly matured in foudres, this blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied, expansive and supple, then slightly woody and astringent on the finish. Give it another year or two to settle down.”

The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid. Drink or hold.”

Then comes the expansive and very concentrated palate , which reveals so many spicy nuances as it rolls over the palate, the stunning fine tannins pushing the finish out even further. A grenache-based blend from 60-year-old vines.”

Merkelbach
We adore the wines of Weingut Alfred Merkelbach, irrationally and perhaps more than any other grower in the Mosel. They set the curve for the term “old-school,” having made their wines in similar style for almost 70 years. These wines capture the delicacy and etherealness of Riesling like few other wines we’ve tried. In fact, their closest comparison might not be in the Mosel at all, but rather with Jacky Truchot’s wines in Burgundy—another producer who managed to create unbearably delicate, ethereal wines that bottles sunshine and joy.
It was no secret that the brothers planned to retire. It’s one of the many reasons that we feel a painful tugging at the heart when we mention their wines to our readers. That announcement came with the 2018 vintage, the last they produced on their own.
As longtime lovers of these profound wines, we stocked up as much as we could in recent releases despite how bittersweet it felt to do so. We knew our readers would want to stash away some of these tremendous last vintages. Enjoy the wines now, enjoy them years from now; these wines could well outlast us all.

Weingut Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Auslese #12 2018 750ml Was $33, Now $29, 9 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 93+ points “The AP #12 Rosenberg Auslese is a bit more glazed in personality than the AP #1 version, but it is really a pristine coating of botrytis and one could not ask for better! The beautiful bouquet wafts from the glass in a blend of pear, white grape, lavender, violets, bee pollen, a lovely touch of minerality and a whiff of apple blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is vibrant, fullish and complex, with zesty acids, excellent focus and grip, a superb core and a very long, filigreed and extremely classy finish. This is a beautiful wine in the making. 2026-2065. 93+.”
