Pascal Doquet Champ d’Alouettes Le Mesnil Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2005 750ml $179 special, 1 bottle in stock now

Franck Bonville Unisson Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Champagne NV 750ml $59 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Yohan Castaing-Wine Advocate 90 points
“Based on 2018 vintage and complemented with some vins de réserve from 2017, the NV Unisson Grand Cru is showing well today, evoking aromas of white fruits, flowers, chamomile and almonds. Medium-bodied, round and vinous, with a juicy core of fruit and a pinpoint mousse, it’s long and delicate with bright acids and a fresh, ethereal finish. Dosage: five grams per liter.”

Domaine Nowack ‘Les Bauchets’ Pinot Noir Extra Brut, Champagne 2018 750ml $69 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Importer’s Note
“Estate fruit. From single parcel “Les Bauchets” on pure Marne soils. 45 year old vines. Vinification & Aging Base wine is from 2019 – fermented with native yeasts, aged in small oak barrels, unfiltered and unfined. Tirage 5/2020. No dosage. Disgorged 1/2024. 2g/L RS. Importer’s Notes Producer Profile The only 100% fully sparkling Pinot Noir produced at the domaine.”

Gimonnet-Gonet L’Origine Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $54.50 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Falstaff 92 points
“Light straw yellow. On the nose there are aromas of white summer flowers, citrus and a discreet nuttiness, as well as a certain herbaceousness. On the palate it has a pleasantly slender structure with a fine mousse, apple notes and nice length. There is a certain salinity on the finish.”

Piollot Pere et Fils ‘MePetit’ Brut Nature, Champagne 2018 750ml $69 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Although Pinot Meunier is widely planted in the Marne Valley, it is relatively rare in the Aube. Only a mere 6% of the Piollot family vineyards are planted to Pinot Meunier, but they decided to highlight this grape with the Mepetit vineyard in Polisot starting in 2015. Aging in oak barrels gives this wine a uniquely complex texture and profile that is not to be missed. The wine is aged on the lees for four years before release, and like all of the Champagnes from Piollot, it’s disgorged non-dosé.”

Pehu Simonet ‘Face Nord’ Millesime Grand Cru, Champagne 2008 750ml $135 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Skurnik Wines Importer Note
“50% Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay. Assemblage: 100% 2008. Vineyard/Village: 50% old vine Verzenay Grand Cru Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay from Les Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru. Malo: no. Elevage: Pinot Noir in used French oak, Chardonnay in stainless steel. En Tirage Aging: 102 months.
“A fourth-generation producer, David Pehu has taken this 7.5-hectare domaine, located in the Grand Cru of Verzenay in a decidedly ‘Burgundian’ direction. After coming to the estate in 1988, David’s philosophy changed with time, adjusting to focus on certified organic farming and single site and single Cru expressions… In Verzenay Grand Cru, David farms 3.5 hectares including very old vine parcels. Apart from a very small parcel in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the majority of the holdings are all in the Grand Crus of Verzy, Sillery, Mailly, and Bouzy… Pehu strictly avoids the malolactic for all of his wines, including the red wines used for making rosé, as he believes that blocking the malo through a very cold cellar better preserves the finesse and expression of fruit in the long run.”

Valentin Leflaive Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Sur Oger Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime  Champagne, NV (2015) 750ml $99 special, 8 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points
“[Review is for different disgorgement] Aromas of apple pie with lemon curd and stone. Full-bodied with a solid palate of layered fruit and phenolics. Dense and focused with lots of fruit, yet composed and focused. Structured. Almost tannic. Dosage 5g/L.”

Lanson ‘Clos Lanson’ Blanc de Blancs, Champagne 2009 750ml $199 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Decanter 98 points
“A new addition to the Place de Bordeaux this year from the 1ha-walled Chardonnay vineyard in the centre of Reims. A gorgeous toasted buttery nose filled with hazelnuts, lemon rind, orange skin and acaia – all subtly combined but giving complexity and nuance. Instantly salivating on the palate, unctuous yet so delicate in terms of power and heaviness. Generous with a velvet sensation to the bubbles and a slightly chalky finish. Bright and lifted – a joyous combination of citrus – lemon and orange acidity, honeysuckle flowers and stone fruits, balanced by a touch of bitterness and a hint of salty minerality. Such complexity and overall enjoyment to be found here – utterly charming and confident at the same time. The flavours totally envelop the mouth yet the overall expression is finessed and elegant. Drink now (in a wine glass) to savour the fresh zestiness or cellar for decades. A limited production of 7,000 bottles. Aged 12 years on the lees. Disgorged May 2022. 3g/l dosage. The cooler 2008 vintage will be released after this.”

Top Cuvees from the Grande Marques

Andre Clouet Un Jour de 1911… Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $89 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“[Reviewed 2021] The NV Un jour de 1911… is another 100% Bouzy Pinot Noir with an ancient label design. The shining golden-colored cuvée combines ripeness, complexity and finesse with intensity and elegance on both the nose and palate. It’s a powerful and rich yet very fine and balanced Champagne with great freshness and complex length. It is juicy and intense but also highly delicate, and its mineral tension and persistent finish make it a first-class wine for elaborate dishes. A great Champagne, with a label that doesn’t give any more detailed information regarding vintages or disgorgement date, but we know it’s always a 50/50 blend of three vintages (including one great millésime at least 10 years old) and reserve wines from a solera system. I tasted the wine as a Brut with Clouet’s German importer in Bremen. You shouldn’t drink it too early, as it would be a waste of its talents.”

Bollinger La Grande Annee Brut, Champagne 2015 750ml $169 special, 1 bottle in stock now
The Wine Independent 96+ points
“Velvety burnished gold in color with near imperceptible fine bubbles, the Grand Année 2015 is a 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay blend of 11 crus, 79% Grands Cru and 21% Premiers Crus, that is 100% barrel fermented, aged 7 years on lees and finished with an 8 grams per liter dosage. It opens toasty and rich with red forest fruit aromas accented by bruised apple, warm spice, Acacia honey, and a refreshing whiff of chalk. Plush and generous, the medium-bodied palate fills out with a seamless depth of orchard fruit concentration lifted by buoyant, finely spun acid energy and a satiny, pinpoint mousse.”

De Venoge Louis XV de Venoge Brut Millesime, Champagne 2008 750ml Was $249, Now $219 special, 27 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“This is really punchy and broad-shouldered with muscular structure and citrusy undertones. Full body. Lightly tannic and a fresh and vivid finish. This is the first vintage without malolactic fermentation ever. One for the cellar. Better in 2022.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Millesime Brut, Champagne 2015 750ml $379 special, 2 bottles in stock now
The Wine Independent 98 point
s “The 2015 Cristal is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. No malo-lactic was employed and 25% wine was aged in oak. The dosage is 7 grams per liter. An exquisitely delicate yet complex perfume of clover honey freshly shaved ginger marzipan and jasmine slowly emerges from the nose giving way to a core of pear tart persimmons and apple butter. The palate is an exercise in finesse featuring very fine bubbles and fantastic intensity with a myriad of spice and floral nuances finishing with impressive persistence and jaw-dropping poise. This is a style for those that embrace purity soft-spoken expression and impeccable crafting. It won’t disappoint those who love Champagne in its initial youthful perfume flushes yet will undoubtedly reward the patient with a richer toastier more obvious and opulent style with 5-10 years+ of cellaring.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Millesime Brut, Champagne 2016 750ml $329 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Owen Bargreen 97 points
“A dazzling new edition of this wine, the 2016 Louis Roederer ‘Cristal’ Champagne is a world-class combination of 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay. This edition of ‘Cristal’ was given 7G/L dosage. Chalky minerals mark the nose alongside white grapefruit blossom, marzipan, star jasmine and suggestions of kumquat zest that all meld in the glass. The palate is filled with crushed seashells and wet salty stones that combine with rich melon, lemon rind and tangerine zest flavors that combine with suggestions of pastry crust on the palate. Big, round and generous, this exudes class in terms of length, tension and flavor density. A gorgeous wine in its heady youth, enjoy over the next twenty plus years to come.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Vinotheque Edition Brut Millesime, Champagne 1999 750ml $1,245 special, 2 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“The nose has such beautiful, autolysis character with brown-mushroom and toasted-almond aromas. The nose has still-fresh lemons and oyster shell. Very smooth, pastry-like texture on the palate with even layers and a core of fresh lemons and peaches. The striking thing here is the balance and melted-together complexity. In a very great place. This spent seven years sur latte, seven sur pointe and was disgorged in 2014. Drink now.” [Reviewed 2019]

Pommery Cuvee Louise Brut Rosé Millesime, Champagne 2004 750ml $249 special, 28 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“This is a new release and shows wonderful finesse and beauty. You know that the moment you see the pale-amber color. It’s medium bodied with freshness and energy and a long, vivid finish. A joy to taste. Drink now.”

Tarlant

Tarlant is a favorite source for impeccable Brut Natures, and La Vigne d’Antan (“the vines of yesteryear”) is a prime example of why. Sourced from ungrafted vines – a rarity in Champagne – that were planted in sand in 1962 – heck, vines that old are a rarity in Champagne, too – the complexity is astonishing. Bottled only in exceptional vintages, the 2006 lives up to its role as one of Champagne’s greatest single-vineyard wines.

Tarlant La Vigne d’Antan Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, Champagne 2006 750ml $349 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“From ungrafted vines and one of the truly exceptional wines from Tarlant, the 2006 Champagne Blanc de Blancs La Vigne d’Antan Brut Nature is expressive in its bouquet of honeysuckle, toasted brioche, lemon curd, and white peach. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with wonderful depth and purity, offering ripe fruit and fantastic freshness. A complete wine, it has a refined mousse with refreshing acidity and wonderful salinity on the finish. This exceptional wine is my favorite from Tarlant once again, and it will be a treat to revisit over the coming decades. Drink 2023-2043. Disgorged June 2022.”

Tarlant Zero Brut Nature Rose, Champagne NV (2017) 750ml $79 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The NV Brut Nature Rosé Zero is another terric wine from Tarlant. Rose petal, chalk, mint, white flowers and crushed rocks all grace this deep yet wonderfully Champagne translucent Rosé. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, 44% Pinot Noir and 6% Meunier, based on 2017 with added reserve wines. Disgorged: January 2023.”

Tarlant ‘Saignee des Tempetees’ Rosé Brut Nature, Champagne 2015 750ml $119 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93+ points
“The first release of this cuvée, the 2015 Champagne Saignée Des Tempetée Brut Nature Rosé is 100% Pinot Noir, macerated on the skins for 16 hours and disgorged in March 2021. A deep salmon/garnet hue, it offers a very expressive, savory profile, with notes of blood orange, candied roses, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with a pillowy mousse, it opens to notes of fleshy ripe apricot, which is followed by a long-lasting finish. It’s ripe with generous fruit and has no harsh edges to it. It is a very attractive wine to add to the range. Drink 2024-2034. Only 888 bottles were produced. (Drink between 2024-2034).”

Tarlant ‘Le Triumvirat’ Brut Nature Millesime, Champagne 2009 750ml $119 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“58% Chardonnay/42% Pinot Noir. Most vintages, the Tarlants make a unique, usually multi-parcel wine as a snapshot of that particular vintage’s personality. This blend came from three plots–L’Enclume, Crayons and Sablés–hence the “Triumvirat” moniker. 2009 was according to Benoît Tarlant “a very solar year, of richness and power”. All of the vines are organically farmed and harvested by hand, with the clusters very slowly and gently pressed. The juice ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in Burgundy barrels; the wine does not go through malolactic fermentation. Triumvirat was bottled in 2010,disgorged in 2023 and received zero dosage.”

Philipponnat

Philipponnat’s top cuvée is named for the year of the estate’s foundation, 1522 (the same family still runs it), this cuvée sees a touch of oak vinification with no malolactic fermentation. Sources from some of Champagne’s finest Grand Cru lands in Aÿ and Ogar, this is a masterpiece, especially in the glorious 2008 vintage. Any fan of Philipponnat owes it to themselves to take the plunge.

Philipponnat Cuvee 1522 Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime, Champagne 2008 750ml $199 special, 2 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2008 Extra Brut Grand Cru 1522 is also showing very well, offering up aromas of citrus, confit citrus, blackcurrants, marzipan and spice. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered and multidimensional core that marries the tangy acidic spine of the vintage with plenty of flesh and fruit, concluding with a long and chalky finish. While it’s in a very different stylistic register to the 2009, the two are on a similar qualitative plane.”

Philipponnat Royale Reserve Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $54.50 special, 19 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“Complex and smoky nose with orange blossom, green apple, licorice, chalky minerality and toasted bread. Refined palate with pinprick mousse, crisp acidity and a tight, tense and clean aftertaste. 65% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay and 3% pinot meunier. Disgorged in 2024. Dosage 8g/L. Drink now.”

Eric Rodez

It says a lot about a winemaker when he’s elected mayor of his town—even more when that town is Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village of Champagne. Rodez manages to be both one of the best producers in the village and a bit unknown in the U.S., where he has limited availability.

We’d love to fix that with his current set of releases. These are wonderful bottles, full of class and the concentrated power that Ambonnay is known for. Rodez’ style produces compact, vinous wines that are exceptionally serious bottles for the price. While these are delicious now, they will also age for a few years if you have the time and cellar space. Do yourself a favor and discover your new favorite Champagnes.

Eric Rodez Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru, Champagne NV 750ml $95 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Falstaff 92 points
“Light golden yellow with silver reflections and a fine, persistent mousse. On the nose there is fine yellow pear fruit, a little greengage, candied orange zest and some biscuit. The palate is taut and close-knit, with lively structure, white fruit, a salty core of fruit on the finish and lime on the aftertaste.”

Eric Rodez Grand Cru Cuvee des Crayeres Ambonnay Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $79 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Falstaff 93 points
“Medium golden yellow, silver reflections, lively mousse. Delicate nuances of pear, yellow tropical fruit, a hint of blossom honey and candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, a hint of yellow apple, finesse-rich acidity structure, good persistence, a multi-faceted food companion with certain ageing potential. An entry-level Champagne in a class of its own.”

Eric Rodez Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Champagne NV 750ml $89 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s Note
“Offering up aromas of green orchard fruit, hazelnuts, and waxy citrus that are delicately framed by their time in barrel, Rodez’s Blanc de Blancs is a medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy with a focused spine of acidity, energetic mousse and a long, vinous, chalky finish. 48+ months en tirage, 3 g/l dosage.”

Savart

Frederic Savart consistently crafts impressive, compelling Champagnes. There’s a house style to them (vinous, textural, mineral) that’s immediately recognizable, but the bottlings show vivid uniqueness especially on display in the rosé.

Frederic Savart ‘Haute Couture’ Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2020 750ml $249 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2020 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is gorgeous. Apricot, pastry, spice, tangerine peel and a kiss of French oak all meld together. The style hovers between still and sparkling wine. Vinification and élevage in oak, aging on cork and dosage of 2 grams per liter yield an especially vinous, resonant Champagne. The 2020 is an absolute delight today. I won’t be surprised if it ages on the faster side, but it is an undeniable charmer today. I especially admire the way it opens and gains freshness over time. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. (Drink between 2025-2032).”

Frederic Savart L’Ouverture Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $69 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“[Disgorgement may vary] The NV Extra-Brut L’Ouverture is 100% Pinot Noir, base 2020 with 25% reserve wines each from 2019 and 2018. Crushed red berry fruit and white flowers lend notable brightness throughout. This nervy, taut Champagne is all class. Dosage is 3.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2023. (Drink between 2023-2030).”

Frederic Savart Les Voiettes Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2020 750ml $279 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2020 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Voiettes, 100% Pinot Noir from Verzenay, sizzles with tension. Chalk, mint, sage, kirsch and dried flowers all race across the palate. Bright saline notes lend shape and tension throughout. This is a stellar showing from Savart. What a wine! The 2020 was vinified and raised in 500L barrels, then aged on the cork. What a great addition to the range.”

Magnificant Magnums

Bérêche et Fils Reflet d’Antan Brut, Champagne NV (Base-2018) 1.5L $849 special, 3 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“The NV Brut Reflet d’Antan (base 2018) is exquisite. Silky, aromatic and sublime, the Reflet d’Antan is all finesse. Silky contours caress the palate. Readers will find a Champagne of mind-blowing polish. Orchard fruit, citrus confit, spice, chamomile and a kiss of oak flesh out with time in the glass. Reflet d’Antan is one of the most unique wines in Champagne. The complexity gained through a two-level solera and lightly elevated (but not unpleasant) volatile acidity make for a vinous Champagne that exudes character from the first taste to the last. Today, Reflet d’Antan is a bit less oxidative in style than it once was, a reflection of the shift to slightly newer barrels with thick staves.”

Billecart-Salmon Brut Le Réserve, Champagne NV 1.5L $154 special, 5 magnums in stock now
Billecart-Salmon Brut Le Réserve, Champagne NV 3L $379 special, 3 double-magnums in stock now
Winery Note
“Harmony and purity combine together in this light and subtle champagne. Its blend is made up of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier sourced from the very best sites of the Champagne region. It is the ideal partner to delight your guests on every occasion, both as an aperitif and throughout the entirety of a meal.”

Arriving Friday

Jacquesson Cuvee 748 Extra Brut, Champagne NV 1.5L $189 pre-arrival special, 3 magnums available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“The NV Champagne Cuvée 748 is a preview of this wine that has not yet been released and was disgorged just prior to tasting. Sourced from four single plots, predominantly from the 2020 vintage, it will be released next year. It’s expressive, forward, and mineral on the nose, with a vibrant sensibility at this youthful stage, offering notes of fresh red berries, wet, chalky earth, and toasted shortbread. It boasts a linear intensity, with a coiled and nervous energy at this early stage and has a long finish, with its citrus-noted fruit lasting long after the wine is gone. It will be exciting to see this as it fleshes out with another few months to a year or more in bottle. So mouthwatering and salty, with electric energy, it‘s joyful and pleasing as it opens, but it has a way to go before its ready. Drink: 2025+.”

Jacquesson Avize Grand Cru Champ Cain Extra Brut, Champagne 2014 750ml $199 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Jacquesson produced three single vineyards in 2014. The first of the three, the 2014 Champagne Grand Cru Avize Champ Cain Extra Brut pours a bright straw/yellow hue. I love the nose of this wine, which is enticing and pure, with notes of lemon curd and pastry cream, white peach, delicate smoky earth, and chalk. The palate is medium-bodied and delicately rounded with a graceful texture, and while it’s ripe, it keeps light on its feet and has an elegant, supple mousse. It has refreshing and pure acidity, with a precise feel, and it’s long on the palate, floating away gently over time. It should have no problem showing its best over the next two or more decades. Disgorged in January with zero dosage.”

Frederic Savart Ecueil – Trepail Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $119 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The NV Blanc de Blancs Écueil Trépail is a new wine from Savart in the 2021 vintage, a blend of Chardonnay from Écueil and Trépail. Tiny yields necessitated the blending of all the Chardonnay, including several parcels that are typically vinified separately (such as Le Mont des Chrétiens), for this cuvée. Purchased fruit from parcels in Trépail account for 50% of the blend. Tangerine peel, white flowers and marzipan are nicely amplified in the glass. A kiss of spice from the oak lingers on the close. This is essentially a vintage Champagne, but not declared as such. Dosage of 4 grams per liter works well. Readers will find a Champagne of notable immediacy and allure.”

Frederic Savart Bulle de Rose Premier Cru Brut Rosé, Champagne NV 750ml $119 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“This release of the NV Champagne Premier Cru Bulle De Rose Extra Brut is a base of 2023 with a reserve of 2022, is a delicate but pretty rosé composed of 55% Pinot Noir (5-6% of which is red wine), and the rest Chardonnay. Medium-bodied, it is savory and inviting with notes of strawberry pie, white pepper, and clementines. The palate is approachable and medium-bodied, with a lasting chalky texture and a delicate, rounded mousse. It’s very pretty and retains beautiful Pinot Noir spice and perfume lasting on the finish.”
