There are certain Mosel producers that Riesling lovers seem to discover in stages—first through a single bottle that feels unusually precise, then through a quiet realization that the name keeps appearing on the tables of the most serious German wine drinkers. Weingut Carl Loewen is one of those estates. Among Riesling devotees, it’s often spoken about with a kind of knowing nod: not flashy, not loudly marketed, but consistently producing some of the most articulate and satisfying wines in the region.
Part of what makes Carl Loewen so compelling is the raw material. The family farms extraordinary parcels in the Middle Mosel, including old ungrafted vines in the historic Maximin Herrenberg vineyard—plantings that date back well before the First World War. These ancient vines naturally produce small yields and remarkable concentration, yet the wines never feel heavy. Instead, they carry the hallmarks that Mosel purists crave: delicate alcohol levels, shimmering acidity, and that unmistakable slate-driven tension that keeps the wines dancing across the palate.
The estate’s rise in the U.S. feels very much like an insider story. Early bottles began circulating quietly among sommeliers and importers who were searching for producers that still worked in a rigorously traditional Mosel style—spontaneous fermentations, long élevage, and a deep respect for Kabinett and Spätlese as serious wines rather than afterthoughts. Word spread the way it often does in the wine world: not through hype, but through people pouring the wines for friends and saying, “You should really taste this.”
What keeps collectors coming back is how complete the wines feel. They capture the paradox that defines great Mosel Riesling—light yet profound, delicate yet persistent, immediately charming but capable of decades of development. For those already deep into Riesling, Carl Loewen is a name that inspires real enthusiasm. And for anyone just beginning to explore the Mosel at a deeper level, these bottles are one of the most rewarding places to start.

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 93 points “I love the delicate lemon balm and Amalfi lemon nose of this very elegant and filigree dry Mosel riesling. Long racy and lemony finish. Just 11.5% alcohol, but it’s still clearly medium-bodied, perhaps because of the up to 100 year old vines. Vegan. Drink or hold.”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 94 points “Wonderful nose of white peach, lemon zest and fresh mint. Very bright and zesty with impressive energy this is an extremely refreshing wine for a Spatlese with the conventional amount of unfermented grape sweetness, in fact it taste barely off-dry. Exciting purity and precision at the vibrant finish. Vegan. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Carl Loewen ‘1896’ Maximin Herrenberg Alte Reben Riesling, Mosel 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $46.50, that’s $44.18 at 5% off and $41.85 at 10% off, 8 Bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “The 2021er Maximin 1896 Herrenberg Alte Reben Trocken, as it is referred to on the front label, is a dry wine picked on un-grafted vines planted in 1896 in a plot at the lower end of the vineyard and was fermented and matured in Fuder. It proves quite smoky and herbal at first before delivering a pure nose of freshly cut pineapple, greengage, pear, and minty herbs, all wrapped into lime and may tree. The wine proves zesty and pure on the light-weighted yet complex palate. It leaves a very intense and smoky feel in the long and focused finish. The after-taste is all about lime, spices, and herbs, with a touch of salty elements in the background. This is a really great dry Riesling. 2025-2036.”
Weingut Carl Loewen ‘1896’ Maximin Herrenberg Alte Reben Riesling, Mosel 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $52.50, that’s $49.88 at 5% off and $47.25 at 10% off, 31 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 96 points “Brimming with ripe peaches, wildflowers and herbs, this is extroverted for a young dry Mosel riesling. What a juicy and joyful wine it is on the medium-bodied palate. At once intensely spicy and very well structured in the long, expressive finish. Vegan. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Carl Loewen Longuicher Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 90 points “The 2021er Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett Mit 100 Jahre alten wurzelechten Reben, as it is referred to on the front label, is made from block-harvested grapes at 82° Oechsle on over 100-year-old un-grafted vines situated high up the hill and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (38 g/l). It shows a fully aromatic and captivating nose of William’s pear, canned yellow peach, a dash of coconut cream, greengage, and kiwi, all wrapped into smoke and herbs. The wine is superbly light-weighted and finely juicy on the aromatic but fresh palate. The finish is very clean and precise with good length. This is a superb aromatic Kabinett to enjoy in its youth on its fruity side. 2025-2031+”
