Bandol & Tempier Sale
Close-Out Featurette: BOND

“Of all of the domaines we represent, no other serves more as our cornerstone, stands more in the defense of terroir, and is more intricately interwoven with our own history, than that of the iconic Peyraud family of Domaine Tempier.” – Kermit Lynch (Importer)

Bandol & Domaine Tempier

The south of France is home to the Provencal wine region of Bandol. Here is the second (dare we say vacation) home of Mourvèdre, also known as Monastrall in its home country of Spain. This bold red results in one of the biggest and richest wines in the world that still manages impeccable balance with its heady spice and earthy aromas and formidable tannins and acidity.

Domaine Tempier is the most famous producer in the region, best known for its mineral-driven and cellar-friendly rosé. The reds, though, are criminally underrated and underappreciated, especially to lovers of bold, full-throttle wines. They represent the pinnacle of Mourvèdre-based blends that could convince even the most die-hard Rhone or Cali Cab lovers to expand their horizons, if only one could manage to convince them to try.

Historically, they were quite tannic as well, but Tempier has made current releases drinkable on release (we just suggest a healthy decant). Oh, and in case you’re wondering, they age remarkably.

Bandol reds in general offer a distinct earthiness and a spicy, bright finish. And they age remarkably. Mourvèdre effortlessly transcends its decades much like Nebbiolo. So, pick up a few and prepare to have your mind blow now and for decades to come.

Le Galantin Bandol Rosé 2024 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
VinePair Review
“Achille and Liliane Pascal started Domaine Le Galatin with a small production of rosé in 1972, and the Bandol-based estate is now run by the second generation. The winery’s flagship rosé prominently features Mourvèdre at 62 percent of the blend, with Grenache and Cinsault making up the remainder. The result is a generous, expressive rosé with notes of ripe peaches, orange zest, and grapefruit with a lingering mineral finish. It delivers everything one might want from a Bandol rosé, and at less than half the price of a bottle of Tempier.”

Chateau Pradeaux Bandol Rosé 2024 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Chateau Pradeaux Bandol Rosé 2024 1.5L Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
VinePair Review
“Château Pradeaux is a historic estate located on the outskirts of the town of Saint Cyr-sur-Mernear on the Mediterranean coast that has been making Bandol wines since the 18th century. This cuvée is a 50-50 blend of Mourvèdre and Cinsault, lending to a well-structured, medium- bodied palate. It has concentrated flavors of blood orange, watermelon, and strawberries, with subtle savory hints. A truly age-worthy expression of rosé.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Falstaff Magazine 93 points
“Vivid notes of ripe strawberry immediately hit the nose with red-fruited charm, opening up into aromatic notes of summer pudding. The palate is smooth and just as fruity. This is rounded and medium bodied, brimming with that ripe, fresh berry fruit and an ample, full-fruited yet utterly fresh, summery richness.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge ‘Lulu & Lucien’ 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Winery Note
“The Estate’s prominent cuvée blends the discrete strength of Bandol with the elegance and finesse which characterize Tempier. This complexity is a result of different terroirs of the estate and the variety of its clay-limestone soil located around the Estate but also in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. There are sandy marls, limestone greseux from santonien, rudist limestone and recent barely deep horizons of colluvions. Plus, there are various sun or wind exposures. Composition: Mourvèdre (~ 75%) with Grenache and Cinsault and a smaller proportion of Carignan and Syrah. Average age of the vines: 35 – 40 years.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge Cabassaou 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“The Cabassaou cuvée (ça cabasse = gives a hefty punch) is from a terroir with small stone walls, at the bottom of the Tourtine, protected from the Mistral wind. The vines benefit from a very warm micro-climate with thermal winds. Paradoxically the vines are located at the bottom of the hill but the soil is not deep and the yields are very small. They give a very dense, tight wine, typically Mourvèdre , with an exceptional aging potential. Composition: Mourvèdre (92 to 94%), with Syrah and a bit of Cinsault. Average age of the vines : 60 years minimum.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Migoua 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $81.80, that’s $77.71 at 5% off and $73.62 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2020 Bandol la Migoua—tasted from foudre—is a bit tarry and rubbery (expected, to some degree, in young Mourvèdre-based wines) but opens up to reveal seductive, ripe notes of blackberries and mulberries. A blend of approximately 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Cinsault, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah, it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, concentrated but silky in feel and elegant on the long finish.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Tourtine 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“Mainly Mourvèdre (85%), with Cinsault and Grenache, the 2020 Bandol la Tourtine was still in foudre at the time of my visit last year. Scents of cola, smoke and red berries provide ample complexity on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and almost creamy in texture while remaining fresh and dynamic on the lengthy finish.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Tourtine 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $84.50, that’s $80.28 at 5% off and $76.05 at 10% off, 16 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“At this stage, La Tourtine is the most open, fruit-forward, and alluring of the three reds here. Zesty and vibrant, with notes of black cherries, blood orange, and iron, this bottle will be hard to keep your hands off now. But do yourself a favor and grab at least a few bottles to revisit in five, ten, and twenty years from now. There are few pleasures like aged Bandol rouge from Tempier.”

BOND Melbury, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Was $649, Now $599, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The more time passes, the more I think Melbury may turn out to be one of the most complete wines in the BOND range. The 2016 and 2015 both make a very strong case for that view. Tasted from bottle, the 2015 is exceptionally beautiful and vivid. Blood orange, mint and floral notes add nuance to an unbelievably polished, refined Cabernet Sauvignon. Put simply, the 2015 Melbury is a total stunner and every bit as captivating as it was last year.”

BOND Quella, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Was $649, Now $599, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The Quella is somber and brooding in 2015. Dark cherry, plum smoke, tobacco, leather, spice and scorched earth give the 2015 distinctive baritone inflections. There is quite a bit of density and textural resonance, but at the same time, the Quella is not particularly expressive. Perhaps bottling has affected the Quella more than it has the other wines in the range, as it was quite showy from barrel. I have seen Quella go through a period of reticence after bottling, so I won’t be at all surprised if all it needs is time.”

BOND Quella, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Was $819, Now $599, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 Quella is rich, ample and beautifully resonant in the glass. There’s terrific depth here and tons of class. Blood orange, game, licorice, tobacco, lavender and dried herbs give the Quella beguiling aromatic presence to play off its muscular, brooding personality. The 2018 needs a few years to soften, but it is already compelling, to say the least.”

BOND St. Eden, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Was $699, Now $599, 1 bottle in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“Moving to the 2015s tasted from bottle, this is an incredible vintage for this estate and there are two perfect wines in the lineup. First up, the 2015 St. Eden, from a hillside of red volcanic soils near Oakville, boasts a saturated purple color and heavenly notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and huge crushed rock-like minerality. It’s full-bodied, deep, and layered on the palate, with incredible concentration, yet it stays seamless, pure, and perfectly balanced. It’s a magical wine to drink over the coming 2-3 decades.”

BOND St. Eden, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Was $819, Now $619, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 St. Eden is impressive. Dense and powerful in the glass, the 2018 is done in a style that emphasizes freshness and vibrancy, reflecting a generational transition in all of these wines that is most apparent here. Dark fruit, licorice, mocha, spice and chocolate begin to emerge with time, but the St. Eden is much less forthcoming than in the past. In fact, the 2018 might very well be the most reticent St. Eden I have ever tasted. That energy will serve it well in the cellar. Readers accustomed to the voluptuous, lush St. Edens of the past will not find that in the 2018. As much as the style has changed in this wine, I am not surprised to see that. A complete vertical of the Bond wines a few years ago showed the St. Eden to have the most condensed arc of peak drinkability of the Bond wines.”

BOND Vecina, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Was $819, Now $619, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“A regal, soaring wine, the 2018 Vecina is immediately captivating. Red fruit, iron, dried rose petal and exotic spice all soar out of the glass. Over the last two months the Vecina has acquired stunning aromatic presence to play off its deep, layered fruit. The 2018 is an absolute gem in the making. As a reminder, Vecina is sourced from Vine Hill Ranch, at the southern end of Oakville, where the Cabernets are distinguished by a beguiling combination of power and savory/earthy intensity.”
