We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Jim Maresh knows a thing or two about wine.
As the third-generation in his family to make wine, Jim crafts Grand Cru-level Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the winery’s prized position in the Dundee Hills. His releases are praised by critics praise as “are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US”, per Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate.
The winery in question? Arterberry Maresh.
These are benchmark wines for the region that somehow capture Jim’s easy-going yet seriously-nerdy-under-the-skin personality.
That dualistic charm is doubled in in experimental side project, Tan Fruit. Now, you could assume that the wines are throwaway gags not meant to see the light of day, but leave it to Jim to make his side project a points-sweeping EVENT. Wine Advocate gushed over the first releases from 2019, granting the wines top marks for Oregon whites in the vintage, and subsequent releases have been equally praised. Tan Fruit expertly explores different vineyard sources, winemaking techniques, and picking dates, while mixing barrel and steel, malo- and non-, from the Columbia Valley to Umpqua. It’s like he followed every possible path of a flowchart and made each result delicious.
If you haven’t reserved a shelf or two in your cellar for these wines, well, that’s your business. But if you’ve been dragging your feet on rounding out your selections, now is the time to buy.

James Suckling 96 points “Another white made with partially botrytized grapes. Firmly structured, yet seamlessly integrated, this needs time to fully reveal its layers. Lush and complex, yet delicately subtle and precise at the same time, offering aromas of passion fruit and pink guava, layered with hints of seashells and white berries, while a flinty edge adds depth. The botrytis influence is clean and subtle, contributing a refined touch. White-tea nuances provide an elegant layer and the palate shows balance between tense chalkiness and silky smoothness. Drink or hold.”

Tan Fruit Eyrie Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 36 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points “Tight and reserved, showcasing the depth of 55-year-old chardonnay vines from Eyrie Vineyard, one of the oldest existing plantings in Willamette, dating back to 1968. A mineral-driven, umami-rich profile with wet leaves, subtle quince, sesame seeds and hints of tangerines. Structured and compact, with a phenolic tension and a savory, earthy, clay-like character. There’s a lot going on in this wine. It is pure, full and very long. Needs time to fully unfold. Whole-cluster pressed. Better from 2027.”

James Suckling 97 points “This bone-dry chardonnay is crafted from cluster selection at Maresh Vineyard, with 50% of the grapes affected by botrytis, yet the influence remains subtle and clean. A broad spectrum of aromatics, with pink nectarines, white cherries and white pepper lifting from the glass. Big yet weightless, with a cloudy, almost ethereal presence. Structured, with subtle tannins and a solid mineral backbone. Long and massive, yet never heavy, with extra layers of depth. From old-vine Wente clone planted in 1983. Drink or hold.”

Additional Highlights In-Stock Now from Arterberry Maresh & Tan Fruit:
Arterberry Maresh Old Vines Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points “The 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Old Vines is remarkably pretty, cascading up from the glass with a vibrant blend of minty herbs and crushed cherries complemented by hints of cola and spice. This has energy to spare, silken in feel with ripe red berry fruits that envelop the senses. It takes on a darker shade toward the close as tactile minerals saturate. A bump of juicy acidity enlivens the finish as sweet tannins tug at the senses and notes of blood orange slowly fade. The 2022 is like a well-muscled dancer. It’s already so likable that many collectors may not have the patience to watch it fully mature. The Dundee Hills Old Vines is sourced from vines that average 41 years old, all Pommard clones, sourced from 75% Maresh and 25% Weber Vineyard.”
Arterberry Maresh Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95+ points “The 2018 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard is an incredible wine. It opens slowly to an arresting perfume of dusty earth, dried rose petals, tea leaves, licorice and amaro with a wealth of bright red berry fruit at the core. The palate is elegant, supple and juicy, with an expansive fan of layered, spicy flavors and a very long finish. It’s hard to resist now, but it will have more to offer with time in bottle.”

Arterberry Maresh Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.28 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Decanter 97 points “The Maresh is a combination of 1970 and 1974 planted vines. Mouthfuls of complexity and elegance. High-toned red fruits and forest-driven umami character, pine bough, blood orange and spice. Long hang times for 2022, the low alcohol is evocative of Old World Pinot Noir. There is a darkness and complexity of the wine, with an intensity of flavour, only 5% new oak, 20 months in barrel. Spiced cinnamon, fresh red strawberries, savoury clove and smoked sea salt, bring an intensity, and a crushed stone minerality finishes this beautiful wine. Silken elegance and intensity combine in a gorgeous wine.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.28 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 97+ points “Out of curiosity, winemaker Jim Maresh and I re-tasted the 2019 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard to compare to the recently bottled 2021s. (Weber Vineyard was previously owned by Jim’s grandfather and part of the Maresh Vineyard.) It’s beginning to curl inward, taking plenty of time to blossom from touches of iodine and flint to wild blackberries, tea leaves, lavender, salted licorice and candied orange peel. The medium-bodied palate is powerful and refreshing, with youthfully latent fruit and a long, spicy finish. Purchasers can look forward to an exciting evolution as this matures over the next 10-15 years.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2022 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard bursts from the glass without even a swirl, displaying an exuberant bouquet of black cherry sauce, rum cake, autumnal spice and hints of balsam herbs. This is a beast, succulent and fleshy in feel yet elegant to the core, with depths of ripe red berry fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. Minty herbs mix with steeped plums through the dramatically long finale, leaving a subtle collection of grippy tannins to linger on. There’s so much depth and power under the hood here. Although the 2022 has a more immediate feel, it also has a deep complexity that keeps me coming back.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2022 Chardonnay Anela is singular and savory. Candied peaches and manuka honey mingle with dried sage, roasted hazelnuts and struck flint on the nose, and it teases you with slowly blossoming, spicy undertones. The palate is luxurious and satiny with kaleidoscopic, mouth-coating flavors, and its modest 30% new French oak is already well integrated. It has a foil of laser-like acidity, and its juiciness and hauntingly long finish draw you back to the glass again and again.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94 points “The Dupee Chardonnay was barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 25% new French oak. It opens with youthful flinty character that gives way to alluring scents of white peach, brioche and meringue. The light-bodied palate features dynamic flavors of ripe citrus and saline, honey and nuts. Its satiny texture is structured by tense, linear acidity, and it has a long, mineral-driven finish. It will be long lived in the cellar.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2021 Chardonnay Fairview Vineyard is scented of red apples and quince with nuances of mushroom, matchstick, hay and acacia flowers. The light-bodied palate is energetic and focused with a youthfully coiled core of savory fruit and a long, mineral-driven finish. Offer it 3-5 years or more in bottle to unwind.”
Tan Fruit Maresh Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2022 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from a block of Dijon clone vines planted in 1991 in the Dundee Hills on a steep, south-facing slope at 675 feet of elevation. Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 15% new French oak, plus four months in stainless steel, it’s reminiscent of Chablis and boasts exceptionally pure aromas. It opens with flint and petrichor before blossoming to apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts. The palate is vibrant and silky with understated layers of creamy, peachy fruit, and its linear acidity and flinty tones come together for a shimmery finish. For several days after it’s opened, the Maresh Vineyard becomes more and more expressive, pointing to a long life in the cellar.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2021 Chardonnay Sophie’s Vineyard comes from an isolated vineyard near the town of Yoncalla in the Umpqua Valley, planted in the late 1970s with Draper and Wente selections. Matured in oak and finished with four months in stainless steel, it has fresh scents of green pear, quince and citrus blossom with undertones of almonds, flint and honey. The light-bodied palate is creamy and plush with gently nutty fruits and a long, refreshing finish.”
Tan Fruit White Walnut Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “Perfumed nose expressing notes of baked pears, almond powder, cream, baked lemons, chamomile and some white flowers. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and character. Vertical with so much tension. Vibrant and intense but remains in control. Plenty of verve and brightness. There is a purity to it. Textural and well-composed. A brilliant white with a long, mineral finish. Drink or hold.”
