Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a terrific wine for the year. Sweet red cherry, plum, tobacco, mint, sweet spices and orange peel are all front and center. This is a gorgeous 2011 Brunello that represents everything the vintage can be; open-knit, accessible and polished. I don’t expect the 2011 will be a long-term ager, but it is exceptionally beautiful and delicious today.”

Flash Sale # 2
Newly Arrived from Adelsheim!

Adelsheim Vineyard Calkins Lane Syrah 2011 750ML ($39.95) $18 super special
From the winery: “This Northern Rhône-style wine opens to reveal aromas of blackberry, blueberry and red currant, along with the subtle hint of black pepper, and roasted meat. In the mouth, you’ll find a wonderful berry sweetness, and rich, luscious tannins. Syrah is one of the principal varieties grown up and down France’s Rhone Valley. However, it is in the northern part of that valley where the variety really comes into its own as a pure varietal wine from such vineyards as Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. These great Syrah vineyards lie just north of the 45th parallel, like the vineyards in the north Willamette Valley. While we don’t put too much stock, from a wine standpoint, in being on the same latitude, it did lead us to wonder how Syrah from our vineyards would taste. In 2003, we planted half an acre of one of the earliest-ripening clones of Syrah from France on our warmest site, the vineyard next to our winery at Calkins Lane.”

Ayres Winery

Ayres was founded in 2000 by Brad McLeroy, who gained experience winemaking under Veronique Drouhin of Domain Drouhin in Oregon.  He planted the estate vineyard in 2001 over the remains of a hazelnut orchard.  The estate is dedicated to sustainable practices on their 18 acres of vineyard land and crops are limited to less than two pounds of fruit per vine.  McLeroy produces three high-end cuvees of Pinot, which see around 10% new oak, as well as a Willamette Valley.  The wines are lush and aromatic (without being over the top) and show excellent balance, concentration and terroir.

Welcome spring with an herby Pinot Blanc or Rosé from Ayres, arriving next week:

Ayres Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($19.95) $16 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Clean, crisp, and refreshing.  Some things in life are just easy – like a perfectly chilled bottle of Pinot Blanc paired with abundant sunshine! Tasting notes: Mineral tones and citrus highlights deliver an instantly refreshing sensation to your palate!“
VinopolNote: All stainless steel.  Mostly estate grapes (that his kids don’t eat off the vine!) with some purchased fruit.  An excellent dry, crisp and refreshing Pinot Blanc.

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Ayres Rose of Pinot Noir, Estate, Ribbon Ridge 2015 750ML ($19.95) $16 pre-arrival special
Winery note: “A Rose of Pinot Noir where you can actually experience the Pinot Noir!  We deliberatly pick this block of Pinot Noir specifically for our Rose.  We find our eastern-most Pommard rows offer a nice spicy element to this Rose.  Try it.  You’ll like it.”
VinopolNote: McLeroy designated a portion of the estate vineyard for rosé.  The grapes are harvested about two weeks early to impart dried herbal notes instead of a heavy perfumed note and to give the wine higher acidity. A light-bodied rosé with tart, green herbal notes – think tarragon and rose hips.

Ayres Wines Available Here Now

Ayres Lewis Rogers Lane Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2014 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 7 bottles available
Winery note “If our vineyard could speak, this bottle is what it would say.  All of our producing clones are represented in this superbly elegant Estate Pinot Noir.  Lewis Rogers Lane is always a crowd pleaser.”
VinopolNote: Opens with a dark, tarry-earthiness that develops into notes of black tea and purple flowers.  The wine is silky smooth on the palate and medium bodied.

Ayres Perspective Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2014 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 17 bottles available
Winery note “All of life is shaped by perspective, is it not?  Allow our Perspective Pinot Noir to enhance your view.  Made from Estate fruit as well as 3 other neighboring Ribbon Ridge vineyards, this bottling is a true snapshot of Ribbon Ridge, Oregon’s smallest AVA.”

Ayres Pioneer Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 2 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Deep red. Vibrant aromas and flavors of black raspberry, rose, smoky minerals and white pepper. Juicy, fruity and energetic, offering a suave blend of power and vivacity. A smoky note lingers on the sappy, persistent finish, which is framed by smooth tannins.”

Ayres Pioneer Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 6 bottles available
Winery note “Big and bold and earthy and fruity in a brambly kind of way!  Once a Pioneer fan, always a Pioneer fan.  Those who like their Pinots to live large like Pioneer.  It is named for a family member who endured the Oregon Trail in 1860.  This wine could have stood up to that kind of journey.”

Ayres Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19 special, 18 bottles available
Winery note “A wine that is as kind to your wallet as it is to your meal.  Dollar for dollar, the richest Willamette Valley wine you will find!  There is plenty of our Ribbon Ridge estate fruit in this bottle of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir!”

Slow Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 21 bottles available
VinopolNote: This is a special cuvee crafted by Grochau Cellars in support of Slow Food Portland.  The wine is a blend of single barrels submitted by eleven WV wineries including Ayres, Evesham Wood, J Christopher, Cameron and Westrey.  The wine is bright, fresh, and balanced, showing aromas of cherries and anise.

Terre Nere
Tectonic Wines
from Mount Etna

Mount Etna has been called an “island within an island” which, all things considered, makes quite a bit of sense. For one, not many people make wine there. Sure, there are more than there have been in decades; many vineyards have sat abandoned since the 70’s & 80’s due to high operational costs and the difficulty presented by the landscape and climate. But even as Sicily enjoys a resurgence within the wine world, Mount Etna grows in measured steps – not unlike those of a volcano itself.

The notion of an ‘island within an island’ comes from the fact that the wines made there are unlike those made on Sicily, in Italy, or anywhere else in the world. Native varietals Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio make for an extraordinary blend: high acidities, lots of spice, immensely layered and complex, surprisingly not too full-bodied… Though the two grapes’ roots can be traced back partially to Sangiovese, they are truly unique.

The high altitudes, rocky soils, and volcanic elements all make for quite the dramatic backdrop. As Megan Krigbaum from Food & Wine phrased it: “…when I was visiting Etna, I kept noticing how nice and new all the roads were; then I realized they were so nice and new because the lava had wiped out the old roads. As one vineyard manager told me about the volcano, ‘It can give beauty and grapes or it can take your house.’”

Those willing to accept the risks involved (potential lava flows and reviving dormant vineyards seem like quite the one-two punch) have found substantial success and acclaim on Etna. Marco de Grazia, a former importer of underdog Italian wines to the U.S., came to the volcano’s northern slopes in 2002 and conceived Terre Nere, a domain which has grown to become one of Etna’s most beloved wineries.

Fiercely dedicated to the terroir of Etna and preserving old rootstocks – some dating back 130+ years! – de Grazia owns vines across ten parcels spread across thirty hectares. Terre Nere also purchases fruit from small farmers who share their unwavering commitment to organic viticulture. 80% of the estate’s vines are 50-100 years, along with the aforementioned pre-phylloxera vines.

The wines of Terre Nere are an astonishing value considering their quality.  We’re proud to offer a wide array of their bottlings – including some new releases – all viewable below.

Terre Nere Wines Available Here Now:

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 4 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer & Wine Spectator 90 points “(14.5% alcohol):  Bright red.  Pungent red berry, flint and floral aromas on the perfumed nose.  Then much sweeter and richer on the palate, with smooth red cherry and spice (cardamom, cinnamon, white pepper) flavors.  Full and long, with a strong mineral quality.” ST

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 7 bottles available
Importer note “The ‘Calderara Sottana,’ made from the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, is unbelievably fresh and complex, with a wonderfully pronounced nose.  Robert Parker calls it “a terrific, elegant, savory, fresh, perfumed wine offering notes of sweet smoked herbs intermingled with cherries, earth and a hint of truffles.”  It is delightfully balanced and layered, and is without a doubt ready to drink.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2006 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2006 Feudo di Mezzo is incredibly elegant and silky as it caresses the palate in stunning style. Nothing in particular stands out in this dense, full-bodied red, yet the wine’s overall poise and harmony is breathtaking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $41.90 special, 15 bottles available
James Suckling 94 points “I love the dried-strawberry, chocolate, nut and plum character to this. Full body, dusty tannins and a juicy, fresh finish. Excellent acidity, too. Better in 2016.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Guardiola Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 9 bottles available
Importer’s note “At 800-900 meters above sea level on the north side of Mount Etna, the Guardiola vineyard is the highest red-wine producing vineyard in all of Europe. (Just to give you an idea of the relative altitude, the highest vineyard sites in Montalcino only reach 500 meters above sea level!) It gets bright hot sun during the day and gentle breezes off the Gulf of Catania cool things off at night, adding to the aromatic complexity of the wine and protecting the fruit from mold and mildew during the later stages of its ripening (since it is harvested at the end of October, the weather almost always breaks before the fruit is ripe).”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Santo Spirito Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 18 bottles available
Importer note “Exposure: Vineyards located on the north slope of Mt. Etna.  Ageing: Aged in Stainless Steel for 6 months, then aged in equal proportions in French barriques, tonneau and cask.”

Terre Nere Wines Arriving March 2016:

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Le Vigne Niche’ Bianco Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points “I was delighted by the 2013 Etna Bianco Cuvèe delle Vigne Niche because it shows a broader style that I did not expect. This is a pure expression of Carricante from vines that are up to 60 years old in age. It sees brief oak contact. You get a pure sense of mineral dryness at first, but that layer lifts gracefully to expose orange peel, dried jasmine and exotic fruit at the back. This Etna white delivers a firm style with muscle and density. It should evolve nicely over the next five years.”
Ian D’agata–Vinous 91 points “Deep straw-gold. Yellow flowers, minerals, fennel and a smoky note on the nose. Densely packed, bright and juicy, offering rich orchard fruit and botanical herb flavors. Finishes vibrant, complex and long. This was fermented in oak and aged for about nine months in 20-hectoliter barrels.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Rosso Etna, Sicily 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 90 points “A perfumed, light- to medium-bodied red, with crushed raspberry, mineral and spice flavors. Light tannins show on the supple finish. Elegant and very drinkable. Drink now through 2021.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Guardiola Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Ian D’agata–Vinous 93 points “Bright red. Captivating nose combines red cherry, faded red rose, violet and tar; I know everyone speaks of Etna in terms of Burgundy, but this reminds me a lot more of a great Nebbiolo! Then pure and penetrating on the palate, with rich red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by minerals and tar. Complex and long on the fine-grained finish. This outstanding wine possesses a measure of depth and complexity that the other crus in 2013, as wonderful as they are, don’t have.”
Wine Advocate 93-95 points “My mind wanders to the immense beauty of this stunning vineyard site when I taste the 2013 Etna Rosso Guardiola. Throughout my many years covering Italian wine, this is one of the most beautiful sites I have ever had the honor to visit. That otherworldly beauty – with volcanic stone walls, knotted pre-phelloxera vines, cherry trees and wild flowers with little shrines to the Madonna peeping through the vines – is forever etched in my memory. Guardiola is among my favorite Etna Contrade. This is a shapely and sophisticated expression with dark fruit tones of cassis and blackcurrant backed by crushed mineral and dried flowers. The tannins are firm and drying. This vintage far exceeds my expectations.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Ian D’agata–Vinous 93 points “Vibrant red. Very Nebbiolo aromas of red cherry and red rose are complicated by Pinot-Noir like flint and darker fruits. Dense and large-scaled but juicy too, offering bright, pure flavors of red berries and cherry supported by silky tannins. The finishes is pure, suave and very long, with mineral and floral reminders. I find this to combine the best traits of the Guardiola and Calderara wines, which is not that surprising as the grapes used to make it come from the Calderara Sottana and Santo Spirito vineyards (the latter is located right beneath Guardiola, so I wasn’t too far off the mark). Great stuff.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special (that’s only $36.50/bottle!)
Ian D’agata–Vinous 92 points “Dark red. Strong stony minerality currently overshadows aromas of red cherry and raspberry. Penetrating and vibrant on the palate, with red berry and mineral flavors displaying noteworthy purity and complexity. Lingers long on the youthfully chewy finish, which features a bright mineral overlay and a violet topnote. This cru is located at roughly the same altitude as Feudo di Mezzo but the soil is extremely gravelly. It’s almost always the most Burgundian of Terre Nere’s many crus and it’s no different this year. Only about 800 meter walk away from the Feudo di Mezzo Quadro delle Rose vineyard, but the wines are a world apart.”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2013 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana shows a different personality compared to Tenuta delle Terre Nere’s other single-vineyard expressions. Calderara Sottana offers more balsamic definition with wild fennel, rosemary spring, dark fruit and scorched earth. To my palate, it is the most ethereal of the bunch and the hardest to pin down given that the aromas are in constant evolution and flux. Pretty fruit and berry tones fill in the back. Despite the enormous definition presented on the bouquet, the wine is more immediate and direct in the mouth. Bright berry is followed by ash, smoke and dusty tannins. This vintage feels less complex overall but it should age nicely. ”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2013 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special (that’s only $36.50/bottle!)
Ian D’agata–Vinous 91 points “Vivid red. Earth tones and licorice on the nose. Then fruitier and large-scaled in the mouth, offering ripe red fruit and botanical herb flavors that carry through a long, vibrant, chewy finish. The polished tannins provide lovely backbone to the rich red fruit flavors. This is always the first cru to be harvested, roughly two weeks ahead of Guardiola, which is located about 350 meters higher.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Santo Spirito Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2013 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is an abundant and enriched expression from the darkened volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna Santo Spirito runs through parts of Passopisciaro at the heart of Etna’s best production zones. This gorgeous wine opens to a dark garnet appearance with inkier colors of crimson and ruby. Crisp and crunchy tones of wild berry, cranberry, red rose and dark mineral characterize the mouthfeel. This was a difficult vintage that saw slow and uneven ripening for many producers. Marco De Grazia has evidently mastered when to harvest his fruit at optimal ripeness.”

Other Incredible Wines from Etna:

Passopisciaro Contrada C Chiappemacine, Sicily 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 6 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 89+ points “Medium red.  Musky raspberry, redcurrant, minerals, white flowers and a whiff of cough syrup on the nose.  Minerally, serious and tightly structured, with a restrained sweetness to the vibrant red fruit and herbal flavors.  The saline finish displays excellent length, serious tannins and a hint of orange peel.   The name refers to the Chiappemacine area of Etna; the vines here are 80 years
old.”

Passopisciaro Contrada G Guardiola Rosso, Sicily 2011 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 4 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 90+ points “Good full, bright red.  High-toned aromas of red cherry, cough drop, sweet spices and almond paste, plus a whiff of alcohol.  Sweet and juicy, with superb penetration to the vibrant mineral and red cherry flavors.  Very long wine with an electric, firmly tannic finish and excellent grip, but this needs time to smooth out.  A note of marzipan that is typical of the Guardiola cru repeats at the back.”

Passopisciaro Rosso Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicily 2011 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 1 bottle available
Stephen Tanzer 92+ points “Bright red.  Captivating, extremely intense aromas of flinty red cherry and raspberry, lifted by violet and mineral notes.  Sappy, floral fruit shows lovely sweetness and energy thanks to well-integrated acidity and spicy mineral lift.  Dense, chewy and saline on the brisk finish, featuring youthful, building tannins.  Made from vines between 75 and 100 years of age, this is a star in the making–a truly great Passopisciaro and the best wine in this year’s releases of Sicilian wines from the talented Andrea Franchetti.”

Passopisciaro Contrada P Porcaria, Sicily 2011 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 5 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92+ points “Good bright red.  Complex, highly perfumed scents of red cherry, raspberry, marzipan, iron, white flowers and peppery herbs.  Sweeter in the middle and more powerful than all the other cru bottlings from Passopisciaro in 2011, but with lively spicy lift.  Finishes ripe and long, with mouthcoating tannins, a hint of vanilla and repeating red cherry and berry notes.  A lovely wine, seemingly less austere than the other 2011s here.  The Porcaria cru area is my favorite, with its north-exposed 80-year-old vineyards, as the grapes in this section of Etna benefit from the longest, slowest ripening period and often give wines of mindblowing complexity.”

Passopisciaro Contrada R Rampante, Sicily 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 3 bottles available
Vinopolnote: Grown from vines at nearly 3,500 feet in altitutude. As Italian Wine Geek phrases it, “This is not your sun-drenched Sicilian beach. These are the ‘Alps’ of Sicilia!” This wine is one of four very different expressions of Nerello Mascalese from Passopisciaro’s “Contradas”, or vineyards.

Passopisciaro Contrada S Sciaranuova, Sicily 2011 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 2 bottles available
Vinopolnote: Situated at 2,800 feet above sea level. Hardened lava soils which are segmented like pebbles or clumps of coal; 80+ year old vines.

Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino 2013 750ML ($249.95) $149 special (that’s only $12.42/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 91 points “Bright red cherries, stone fruits, smoke and tobacco are some of the notes that jump from the glass in the 2013 Rosso di Montalcino. In this vintage, the Rosso is bright, floral and medium in body, all of which make it extremely versatile. This is another fabulous Rosso from Il Poggione and also a terrific introduction to the year in Montalcino.”

Vintage Fever
Bordeaux of 2009

Both 2009 and 2010 were wonderful vintages for Bordeaux, with an almost political divide existing between each vintage’s devotees. Wine Enthusiast rather aptly illustrated it: “…one vintage has depth and drink-now deliciousness while the other is more classically restrained and age-able. What is a Bordeaux wine lover to do?”

09’s, in brief, tend to be richer, ripe, broad, and seductive. 10’s, on the other hand, have been said to read more linear, firm, and structured. Which is better? The answer, of course, lies in the glass.

Parker, for one, drew his line in the sand with 2009. Though wine writing may be known for the occasional embellishment, he made an unflinching proclamation: “it may turn out to be the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux.” Even in the retrospective period of a wine critic’s career, these are not to be taken lightly. Parker awarded a total of eighteen wines with 98-100 point scores.

2009, as a vintage, could be seen as seamless. The weather shift was slow and steady, with warm days and cool nights in the summer leading to an easy autumnal harvest without the paranoid worrying that often follows an ideal summer season. The wines show for it, too, being so immediate and likeable. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to open a few 09’s and 10’s, though, and see for yourself…

Newly Arrived 2009 Bordeaux, Available Here Now

Chateau L’Evangile, Pomerol 2009 750ML ($599.95) $379 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 100 points “An astonishing effort from the Rothschild family, the 2009 l’Evangile may be the reference point offering from this estate for decades to come. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% new oak, with 15% natural alcohol, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of caramels, black raspberry liqueur, blackberries, violets, graphite and truffles. Thick, viscous flavors are reminiscent of such super-ripe vintages as 1982, 1959, 1949 and 1947. The striking aromatics, massive, full-bodied mouthfeel and multilayered palate that resembles a skyscraper in the mouth offer an abject lesson in great winemaking, extraordinary terroir, and the ability to combine power with precision, elegance and freshness. This is unquestionably a huge wine, but it also possesses mindboggling complexity and finesse. Because of its sheer extract and velvety personality, it will be drinkable in 4-5 years, and will keep for four decades or more where well-stored. The most profound L’Evangile ever made?” RP

Chateau d’Arcole, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 36 bottles available

Additional 2009 Bordeaux Wines Available Here Now

Chateau Bellegrave, Pomerol 2009 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 1 bottle available
“This firm red shows cherry, rhubarb and herbal flavors, with tight tannins and orange zest acidity. A bit lean, but lively and fresh. Drink now through 2017.”–Wine Spectator (2012)

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Chateau Margaux, Margaux 2009 750ML ($1,199.95) $999 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 99 points “A brilliant offering from the Mentzelopoulos family, once again their gifted manager, Paul Pontallier, has produced an uncommonly concentrated, powerful 2009 Chateau Margaux made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As with most Medocs, the alcohol here is actually lower (a modest 13.3%) than most of its siblings-. Abundant blueberry, cassis and acacia flower as well as hints of charcoal and forest floor aromas that are almost Burgundian in their complexity are followed by a wine displaying sweet, well-integrated tannins as well as a certain ethereal lightness despite the wine’s overall size. Rich, round, generous and unusually approachable for such a young Margaux, this 2009 should drink well for 30-35+ years.”

Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse, Pauillac 2009 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 4 bottles available
James Suckling 93 points “A solid red, with raspberry and currant aromas and flavors. Full body, with solid tannins. Polished texture. Well crafted. Try after 2018.” JS

Chateau Quinault L’Enclos, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 14 bottles available
Case-12 Chateau Quinault L’Enclos, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009 750ML ($599.95) $499 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $41.58/bottle!)
James Suckling 93 points “A soft and fruity wine, with orange peel and berries and plums. Full body, with super fine tannins and a fruity finish. Refined and very pretty. Structured in the end. Fresh. Succulent. A style away from the over extracted one a few years ago. Try after 2018.” JS
Wine Spectator 92 points “This is very distinctive, with live-wire acidity running through the core of damson plum, linzer torte and blackberry fruit that’s framed by a mouthwatering roasted apple wood note. The long and driven finish has a piercing iron edge and a smoldering tobacco note that adds to the dramatic profile. Best from 2015 through 2025.” WA

Chateau Guiraud, Sauternes 2009 750ML ($99.95) $55 special, 29 bottles available
Chateau Guiraud, Sauternes 2009 375ML ($59.95) $49 special, 36+ half-bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 points ‘Highly Recommended’ “This is a bird of a different feather, with an exotic, vibrant aroma of toasted coconut, followed by an almond cream note that gives way to the core of green fig, papaya, Cavaillon melon and honey. There’s stunning richness and mouthfeel, with the power to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Very impressive. Best from 2015 through 2040.”WS

Chateau Bellevue-Mondotte, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2003 750ML ($399.95) $199 special, 6 bottles available
Robert Parker 98 points “An exquisite jewel in Chantal and Gerard Perse’s Right Bank empire, Bellevue-Mondotte is a tiny, 5-acre parcel of 45-year-old vines planted on the limestone plateau above Pavie-Decesse and Pavie-Macquin. It is composed of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. I tasted the 2003 on three separate occasions, one of which merited a three-digit rating. Sadly, there are only 4,000 bottles of this prodigious effort. Possessing relatively high alcohol (14.5%) for a Bordeaux, it is an amazing blend made from 15 hectoliters per hectare. A dense, viscous-looking purple color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of blackberries, espresso roast, fried lard, and pain grille. Full-bodied and massively rich with decent acidity and plenty of structure as well as tannin, this youthful 2003 should hit its stride in 3-5 years, and last for three decades. This may be what the great 1929s or 1947s tasted like at age three.”RP

Chateau Aney, Haut Medoc 2005 375ML ($21.95) $19 special, 14 half-bottles available
Chateau Aney, Haut Medoc 2008 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 10 bottles available
On Chateau Aney wines in general, from the importer “The final blend of the wine matches the proportions in which they are planted throughout the thirty hectares of vineyards: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. This traditional Haut Médoc is more like what you might remember of the classic Bordeaux styles of the 1960s and 1970s. Not at all cloaked in new wood or over-extracted tannins, Château Aney’s wines have finesse and balance that make them both approachable now and perfect for longer aging.  They are a great choice for any cellar.”

Robert Parker 96 points “A candidate for the “wine of the vintage,” Pontet Canet’s 2008 boasts an opaque purple color as well as copious aromas of sweet blueberries, blackberries and black currant fruit intertwined with lead pencil shavings, subtle barbecue smoke and a hint of forest floor. Full-bodied, with fabulous richness, texture and tremendous freshness, this first-growth-like effort is more developed than the uber-powerful 2010. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades. Bravo!” RP

Despite the lush flavors, this is serious a wine, boasting a strong graphite spine that strides through the finish and lovely flecks of anise and black tea hanging in the background for added range. Should age well. Best from 2015 through 2030.”
James Suckling 94 points “Wonderful charming nose with wild strawberries, milk chocolate and raspberries. Opens up with eucalyptus and licorice. So soft and velvety on the palate with a beautiful finesse-driven texture. Full and with silky tannins. Long and very enjoyable. Drink from 2016.”

M. Chapoutier

Michel Chapoutier met Anthony Terlato in 1987 when Terlato visited the winery on a recommendation of a friend.  At the time, Chapoutier was looking for a new importer for the US.  At first, Chapoutier’s youth was off-putting, but during the course of their meeting over dinner, Terlato came to understand the genius and potential in Chapoutier.  With Terlato’s financial backing, Chapoutier took over his father’s ailing winery and returned it to its rightful place as one of the most iconic estates in the Rhone.  Chapoutier drastically changed practices at the estate: he cut yields by over 25%, began hand-harvesting, began using only native yeasts, stopped filtering the wines and adopted biodynamic and organic practices.  Most noticeably, he began producing wines from specific parcels within Hermitage (he was the first winemaker to adopt the practice there).  Chapoutier has won acclaim from many in the biz, including Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

The pair has since branched out into Australia, producing Rhone-styled wines from the unique environments offered down under.

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal Blanc 2011 750ML ($219.95) $159 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 99 points “Surprisingly, I preferred the 2011 Ermitage le Meal Blanc over the 2012 on this occasion and it showed a more flamboyant, sexy style in its caramelized pineapple, tropical, honeyed and floral personality. Big, rich and decadent, with fabulous fruit intensity and length, this rock star flirts with perfection and will keep for another 3-4 decades.”

M. Chapoutier Ermitage de l’Oree Blanc 2011 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 9 bottles available
Robert Parker 100 points “The 2011 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree comes from a lieu-dit known as Les Murets planted with 80- to 90-year-old Marsanne vines. The bouquet offers up scents of Asian spices, lychee nuts, white currant liqueur and peach and apricot marmalade. This stunning, honeyed, flamboyant white is perfection in a glass. Drink it over the next half century.” RP

Wine Spectator 97 points “Packed, with layers of charcoal and tar covering the well-endowed core of braised fig, blackberry pâte de fruit and pastis-soaked plum for now. Alder, olive and bay line the finish, with a terrific graphite spine lending support. Best from 2019 through 2030.” WS

Cote Rotie-like with its perfumed floral, bacon fat, spice and olive-driven bouquet, this full-bodied, supple and downright sexy Syrah makes the most of the vintage. M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal 2010 750ML ($319.95) $299 special, 1 bottle available
Robert Parker 99 points “From the warmest site of these three vineyards, the 2010 Ermitage Le Meal has sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, bacon fat and a meaty, bloody steak component to its richness. It has good acidity, but is clearly the most voluptuous and succulent of this quartet of monumental wines from one of the greatest appellations for wine in the world, Hermitage. This wine needs a good decade of cellaring and should continue to evolve for 40-50+ years.”WA

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2010 750ML ($499.95) $399 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 100 points “Tasting like the concentrated blood from an aged and grilled strip steak, the 2010 Ermitage Le Pavillon boasts a black/purple color along with creme de cassis, camphor, pen ink, white flower and lead pencil shaving characteristics in its massive, full-bodied personality. It almost defies description because of its ethereal concentration and off-the-charts extract levels. This is not for the faint of heart, or those who lack patience, as it will require 10-15 years of bottle age, and, as previously stated, will keep for 50 or more. There are just over 1,000 cases of the 2010 Le Pavillon, another perfect wine in the constellation of profound wines produced by Michel Chapoutier.” RP

This full-bodied, well-made wine reveals outstanding richness, purity, and overall balance. Consume it over the next 15-20 years.” RP

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2011 750ML ($349.95) $289 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 100 points “Even better and a prodigious effort that hits all my sweet spots, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from one of the top terroirs on Hermitage hill, the granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit. Spectacularly perfumed, with raspberry, blackberry, licorice, toasted spices and assorted floral nuances, this full-bodied effort has massive depth and richness, no hard edges and masses of finely polished tannin that emerge on and frame the finish. It will be approachable at an earlier age than either the 2009 or 2010, yet should nevertheless have 2-3 decades of ultimate longevity.”

Featured Focus: Inman

Inman Family Wines was founded in 2000 by Kathleen Inman.  Her interest in Pinot Noir dates back to her years as a student at UC Santa Barbara when she worked for Napa Creek Winery.  She lived in England for several years where she discovered and developed a love and appreciation for organic and sustainable farming.  She strives to achieve balance in her wines through careful harvesting (often weeks earlier than her neighbors) and a hands-off approach in the winery.  The 2010 represents her 8th vintage.

Inman Family Wines OGV (Olivet Grange Vineyard) Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2010 750ML ($49.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points “(made with one-half whole clusters and 12.5% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. A heady, spice-accented bouquet displays scents of strawberry preserves, potpourri and incense, complemented by a lively note of white pepper. Silky, spicy and lithe, with an alluring sweetness and bright mineral cut to its intense red fruit and floral pastille flavors. Pure and seamless pinot, with great upfront appeal and a delicacy that hearkens to the Old World. The “OGV” here stands for Olivet Grange Vineyard, the Inmans’ home property. They are unable to use the word “Grange” in the wine name because of legal challenges.” ST

Sottimano

“I can’t say enough good things about the Sottimano family and the work they have done over the years to firmly establish themselves among Barbaresco’s top growers. This is one of the few places in Piedmont where every wine is consistently delicious. The only question is how delicious.” –Antonio Galloni

Wine should bring joy. And for lovers of things exquisite, Andrea Sottimano’s wines are evocative, they can yield tears of joy. As with all the Sottimano vineyards, a very natural viticulture is employed here. Since 1990, the Sottimano have been spared from herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, et al. They are true believers that if the objective is lively wine, the starting point must be a lively vineyard.

The story of Sottimano has been one of brilliant Barbaresco cru vineyard acquisition. In 1975, the founder, Maggiore Sottimano, purchased the vineyard in Cotta, along with the winery and cellar there. When his son, Rino Sottimano, took the helm he expanded the estate in Cotta and also acquired the vineyards of Currà, Fausoni, Pajore’ and  Basarin.

Into the 21st Century, the winemaking took a quantum leap attributable to the visions and skills of Maggiore’s son, Andrea. Andrea came to the family business propelled by an inspiration born in Burgundy. It is said that when he saw the vineyards in Neive and Treiso, he saw Gevrey-Chambertin. He has transferred some Burgundian oenology into practice at Sottimano, but he is hardly the only son of the Langhe to do that. And yet, his results are so much more. His wines, among young wines from anywhere, have an elevation that can only be matched by Pinot Noir. In fact, we’ll go way out on a limb here: if your favorite wines triangulate anywhere between Dujac, Bize, and Beaux Freres, you will like what Andrea Sottimano is doing.

So, yes, we love them. But we are not alone.

New Releases Arriving Late March

Sottimano Pairolero Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “Pliant, supple and expressive, Sottimano’s 2013 Barbera d’Alba Pairolero is a real beauty. The freshness and energy of the vintage come through in spades. Delicate and medium in body, the 2013 is all finesse. The 2013 spent 25 days on its skins and 18 months in neutral French oak, with no racking until bottling. In a word: Superb.”
VinopolNote: In a visit from Andrea Sottimano to our humble shop, we had the distinct opportunity to taste through a handful of his releases that will arrive next month.  The Barbera shone with all that one would and should expect from impeccably produced Barbera: fruit, floral notes, spices, with good body and no heaviness or flabbiness.  Quite elegant right out of a freshly opened bottle.

Sottimano Curra, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($79.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Currà is fabulous. Rich, deep and expressive, the 2011 impresses for its nearly seamless personality and exceptional balance. Here, the warm vintage has softened some of the more angular contours that are often present. Sweet floral and spice notes resonate on the finish, but above all else, the Currà is a wine of texture. Over the last few years, the Currà is the most improved wine at Sottimano, so it’s hardly a surprise it is often the last Barbaresco poured at the estate. I tasted the 2011 twice from bottle; it was compelling on both occasions. Readers should not miss the 2011, as it is fabulous!”
VinopolNote: Andrea was kind enough to share his reflections on this bottling and the Riserva, neither of which were available to taste when he visited.  He described it as one of the spicier bottlings that showed the most complexity.  It is held back a year by the winery since it needs further time to unveil its full potential.

Sottimano Pajore, Barbaresco DOCG 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Barbaresco Pajoré is a wine that exudes balance and harmony. The wine is absolutely intact in all its elements and there’s a sense of continuity here that sets it apart. As it warms in the glass, this beautiful Barbaresco takes on greater aromatic intensity with its floral tones that blossom brighter and the fruity tones that emerge steadily from the bouquet. Spice, leather and grilled herb linger delicately at the back. The Barbaresco Pajoré is a beautiful wine.” ML
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2012 Barbaresco Pajoré shows the pedigree of this great site in its balance of fruit, acidity and tannin. Like all the wines in this vintage, the Pajoré is a mid-weight Barbaresco, but here it is the wine’s textural finesse that impresses above all else. Chalky tannins underpin flowers, spices, tangerine peel and star anise on the expressive, floral finish.”
VinopolNote: The Pajore vineyard has limestone soils and the wine is some of the most elegant and delicate produced by Sottimano.

Sottimano Fausoni, Barbaresco DOCG 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Sottimano’s 2012 Barbaresco Fausoni shows highly impressive results with a smooth entry to the palate followed by bright fruit flavors that are fused with floral accents, spice and licorice. Fausoni reveals pretty transparency with brilliant garnet accents. The aromas are tonic, vibrant and fresh. There’s plenty of menthol and cardamon-infused lift on the finish. This is a very satisfying wine that promises a long life ahead.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2012 Barbaresco Fausoni is a very pretty, up-front wine with lovely fruit and precision. Crushed raspberries, flowers and sweet spices grace the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The flavors are nicely layered in a soft, delicate Barbaresco that shows the more perfumed, aromatic side of Nebbiolo. In 2012, the Fausoni is all about immediacy.”
VinopolNote: The Fausoni vineyard has clay and sandy soils.  The wine is fruitier than the other bottlings, rounder and more forward.  It showed minty notes, red and dark cherry notes and a hint of exotic sandalwood.

Sottimano Cotta, Barbaresco DOCG 2012 750ML ($59.94) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Aromas of red berry, tilled earth, menthol and dark cooking spice unfold in the glass. The structured, elegant palate doles out ripe wild cherry, mint, licorice, blood orange and chopped herb alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. It’s still tight so let it unwind for a few more years.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2012 Barbaresco Cottà shows its typical profile of round, ample fruit and generosity, but with a touch less richness than is the norm. Broad, ample textures fill out the wine’s frame nicely. Pine, menthol and dark spices wrap around a core of super-expressive dark red stone fruits. All of the typical Cottà signatures are in place, but in miniature, which is to say this is a highly representative wine for the year.”
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2012 Barbaresco Cottá shows a slightly subdued personality and a timid approach. The wine is bright, buoyant and brilliant across the board but it delivers its best assets with less intensity compared to the other single-vineyard expressions of Barbaresco produced by Sottimano. Pretty tones of white cherry and forest berry form a smooth union with light spice, mint and cola. This wine should flesh out further with more time in the cellar.” ML
VinopolNote: The Cotta was the last of our tasting lineup.  The vineyard is composed of 70 year old vines grown in limestone and clay.  It lies not 200 meters from the Curra vineyard, yet shows a remarkably different style that Andrea attributes to the unique soils.  In the glass, it showed more concentration, tannin and black fruit.

Sottimano Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2010 750ML ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2010 Barbaresco Riserva emerges from old vines in both Currà and Pajoré. Deep, dense and exquisitely layered in the glass, the 2010 offers a magnificent interplay of dark fruit, seamless contours and dazzling textural richness. Scents of rose petal, mint, dried herbs and lavender add nuance to the super-expressive Nebbiolo fruit. The finish boasts considerable power married to exquisite finish. This is a wonderfully complete, captivating Barbaresco from Sottimano. All the elements are in the right place. The Riserva spent a total of two and half years in oak with no racking until racking, when the blend was put together.”
Wine Enthusiast 96 points –Cellar Selection “This dazzling red is still in its infancy but promises to bloom into a stunning beauty. It opens with delicate aromas of red rose, perfumed berry, forest floor, exotic spice, aromatic herb and a light balsamic note. Energy abounds on the full-bodied, elegant palate, which delivers bright red cherry, strawberry, white pepper and licorice alongside a backbone of vibrant acidity and firm, refined tannins.”
VinopolNote: Andrea described the wine as being made according to his father’s methods.  Only 900 bottles are produced in a vintage.  The grapes are sourced from the oldest vines in the Cotta and Pajore vineyards and undergo a long, fifty day maceration.

Sottimano Curra, Barbaresco DOCG 2007 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Barbaresco Curra is a touch more austere and reserved than the Fausoni, but equally compelling. A wall of tannin hides a core of bright red berries, flowers, sweet herbs and licorice that will need at least several years of cellaring to fully emerge. This, too, possesses exceptional length and fabulous overall balance in a textured, captivating style for the year. With time in the glass, this positively explodes on the palate with layers of ripe fruit and structure, resulting in a fabulous wine that represents the epitome of finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.”

Sottimano Fausoni, Barbaresco DOCG 2007 750ML ($84.95) $69 special, 5 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “The Fausoni is usually one of the lighter-weight Barbarescos here, but not in 2007. Dark red fruit, crushed flowers, licorice and sweet baking spices come together beautifully in this ripe, sensual Barbaresco. There is a wonderful richness to the fruit that virtually covers the tannins, all while avoiding any sense of heaviness. Simply put, the Fausoni is an overachiever in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.”

Sottimano Cotta, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 16 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “Playing very much true to type, the 2009 Barbaresco Cotta is the richest and roundest of these 2009s. As always, it has the most overt fruit to match its generally supple personality. Here, too the richness of the fruit goes head to head with the formidable tannins all the way through to the finish. This dark, fleshy Barbaresco should enter its sweet spot in another five years or so. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.”WA

Sottimano Curra, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML ($79.95) $49 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Advocate & Stephen Tanzer 92+ points “Sottimano’s 2009 Barbaresco Curra is striking in this vintage. The Curra is often hard when it is young, but in 2009 the wine has a little more volume and richness, which serves to cover the tannins. Bright red berries, flowers, mint and sweet spices flesh out in this radiant, textured Barbaresco. High-toned floral notes flow through to the inviting close. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” WA

Sottimano Fausoni, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “A sweet, floral bouquet infused with a note of mint announces the 2009 Barbaresco Fausoni. This mid-weight, gracious Barbaresco is all about finesse, detail and nuance. I very much like the sense of energy here. Firm yet well-balanced tannins frame the long finish. The balance of fruit, acidity and structure is about as harmonious as it gets in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” WA

Sottimano Pajore, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML ($64.95) $49 special, 29 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer & Wine Advocate 93 points “(from a high-altitude, limestone-rich vineyard in Treiso):  Good bright red.  Sexy, elegant nose offers strawberry, raspberry, tobacco and spices.  Juicy and primary for the vintage, with excellent mineral and spicy cut giving precision to the middle palate.  Very Treiso in character, and the highest in acidity of these 2009 Barbarescos (6 grams, vs. 5.5 for the others).  Finishes energetic and long, with chewy, firm tannins and terrific lift.  This really transcends the vintage.  “But not the best style of wine for a blind tasting,” notes Sottimano.” ST

Sottimano Cotta, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 14 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points “Rich and fleshy, exhibiting flavors of plum and black cherry, buoyed by vivid acidity and beefy tannins. Exhibits a sweet character and plenty of tannins on the finish, so be patient. Best from 2017 through 2027.” WS

Sottimano Fausoni, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 20 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Fausoni is unusually supple, sexy and radiant. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, tobacco and mint all lift from the glass. Fausoni often shows firmer, livelier tannins, but the warm 2011 vintage has softened the contours and yielded an inviting, resonant Barbaresco to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet floral notes from these soils rich in sand add the final nuances of complexity. What a gorgeous wine this is.”
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Crushed raspberry, blue flower, tilled soil and graphite aromas lead the nose on this firmly structured wine. It’s still very young and needs to open up fully, but the palate already displays breeding and class. It offers ripe black cherry, ground black pepper, licorice and grilled sage alongside tightly wound but fine tannins. Drink 2018–2026.”
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Fausoni is initially slow to show its aromatic potential. As it evolves in the glass, it begins to reveal dark cherry, blackberry, cinnamon spice and dark cola. The style here is bold and thick. This wine also shows noticeable power with tight tannins and some astringency. It still needs time to unwind.”

Sottimano Pajore, Barbaresco DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Ripe and delicious, this starts off with aromas of fresh violet, rose, perfumed berry, exotic spice and tilled earth. It’s still young but the palate already delivers a great depth of flavors including juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry, clove and black pepper alongside chewy tannins. Drink 2016 to 2021.” WE

Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is a real stunner. Translucent and weightless in the glass, with tons of pure pedigree, the 2013 hits all the right notes. Sweet lavender, mint, violet and sage notes lift from the glass in a precise, aromatic Nebbiolo to enjoy over the next decade or so. What a gorgeous wine this is. Sottimano’s Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from Barbaresco-designated vineyards in the Basarin vineyard.” AG

Pungent aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and fig, with a gingery accent adding lift. Starts off taut and linear, then fleshes out quickly, picking up a subtle touch of anise with air. The spicy note repeats on the finish, which is firmed by a jolt of tangy acidity.” JR

Bodegas Muga Rosado, Rioja DOCa 2014 1.5L ($34.95) $28 special, 13 magnums available
Wine Advocate 88 points “The rosé from Muga called simply 2014 Rosado is a classical “clarete” from the Rioja Alta, produced with Garnacha and Viura and in 2014, exceptionally, a pinch of Mazuelo (Cariñena) all harvested at the same time. The full clusters are pressed directly and the different musts are blended and then put to ferment in well-seasoned oak vats where it matures in contact with the lees for some four months. It’s a pale, salmon-colored wine with a clean, focused nose and a light palate, that is pleasant, fresh and easy to drink. Bring out those lamb chops!” WA

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘The Bedrock Heritage’ Wine, Sonoma Valley 2013 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “The 2013 Bedrock Heritage Wine is one of the most intriguing wines in the range. Smoke, cedar, tobacco and a host of savory notes meld together in a powerful yet nuanced wines built on delineation and energy. Even with all of its intensity, the 2013 remains lifted, floral and light on its feet for such a big wine. This is by far the most polished and refined wine I have tasted from the Bedrock Vineyard, where the wines have often been much riper and bigger.” AG

Case-12 Alvaro Palacios ‘Les Terrasses’ Velles Vinyes, Priorat DOCa 2012 750ML ($419.95) $349 special, 3 cases available (that’s only $29.08/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)

Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Brilliant ruby.  Potent, mineral-laced raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by exotic floral and spice qualities, picking up white pepper and mocha accents with air.  Seamless and sweet, offering silky red berry preserve flavors with a touch of allspice.  Closes lively and precise, with sneaky tannins and a jolt of bitter cherry.” ST

Case-12 Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($319.95) $199 special, 12 cases available (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($31.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 89+ points “(at 13.5% alcohol, this is a full degree lower than the Pauline’s Cuvee; includes tiny bits of merlot and petit verdot): Bright red-ruby. Musky black raspberry, blackberry, licorice, menthol and oak on the nose. Distinctly tighter and less pliant now than the Pauline’s Cuvee, displaying a touch of medicinal reserve to the sappy dark berry, violet and menthol flavors. Shows serious spine without coming off as hard: I’d give this persistent cabernet a year or two to mellow in bottle.” ST

Felsina Berardenga Fontalloro Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2009 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “There is a lot to like in the 2009 Fontalloro (Sangiovese). For starters, the wine is rich, broad and ample on the palate. Hints of tobacco, savory herbs, licorice and menthol all add complexity over time. The over juiciness of the fruit is nicely balanced by clean veins of underlying acidity that give the 2009 much of its freshness. This is another wine endowed with superb balance and class.” AG
