April Sales

We’ve slashed prices on 10 additional wines for the month of April. See the new list below. For the full list of all 44 wines on sale through the month of April, see the bottom of this newsletter!

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Moulin-a-Vent Les Trois Roches, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($29.95) Was $24,
Now $21.90, 33 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points
“Vivid ruby. Assertive dark berry and floral pastille aromas show very good energy, with a spicy nuance adding complexity. Juicy and pliant, offering sweet, nicely concentrated blackberry and cherry flavors and a of touch of spicecake. Dusty tannins build slowly on a long, smooth and impressively persistent finish, with the dark fruit and spice notes echoing.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Moulin-à-Vent les Trois Roches was matured in 1- to 5-year-old half-tuns. Some attractive undergrowth/woodland scents permeate the dark berry fruit, a touch of cold black tea in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. There is appreciable depth and roundness here, with a soft and fleshy, but quite complex finish. This is an excellent Moulin-à-Vent from Pierre-Marie Chermette.”

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Fleurie les Garants, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($29.95) Was $24, Now $21.90, 36+ bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points
“Deep ruby. Intense black raspberry, cherry and floral pastille aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice and smoky minerals. Juicy and penetrating, offering sappy red and blue fruit flavors that effortlessly marry power to finesse. The mineral and floral notes linger impressively on the finish, which is given shape by fine-grained, sneaky tannins.”

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Coeur de Vendanges, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($24.95) Was $19, Now $17, 36+ bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points
“Lurid ruby-red. Pungent raspberry and cherry pit on the fragrant nose, with hints of white pepper and smoky minerals adding lift and complexity. Spicy and sharply focused, offering vibrant red berry and blood orange flavors that put on weight with air. Closes taut and gently sweet, with strong spicy lift and silky tannins coming in late.”
Wine Enthusiast 90 points “This “heart of the harvest” Gamay is produced from 100-year-old vines, a rarity in any appellation. With less than five acres to work with, this ripe and structured wine shows the potential even of “simple” Beaujolais-appellation wines. It has weight, spice and warm red fruits that are laced with acidity. Drink this wine from 2016.”

Charles Smith ‘Sixto’ Roza Hills Chardonnay, Washington State 2013 750ML ($59.95) Was $39, Now $36, 31 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points
“The richest, full-throttle and decadent in the lineup, the 2013 Chardonnay Roza Hills Vineyard offers lots of baked apple tart, white flowers and creaminess in a layered, balanced, classic style. Like the other wines here, it will drink well for at least 2-4 years.”

Inman Family Wines OGV Olivet Grange Vineyard Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2010 750ML ($49.95) Was $33,
Now $28, 36+ bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points
“(made with one-half whole clusters and 12.5% alcohol): Bright ruby-red. A heady, spice-accented bouquet displays scents of strawberry preserves, potpourri and incense, complemented by a lively note of white pepper. Silky, spicy and lithe, with an alluring sweetness and bright mineral cut to its intense red fruit and floral pastille flavors. Pure and seamless pinot, with great upfront appeal and a delicacy that hearkens to the Old World. The “OGV” here stands for Olivet Grange Vineyard, the Inmans’ home property. They are unable to use the word “Grange” in the wine name because of legal challenges.” ST

Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigna Giachini, Barolo DOCG 2010 750ML ($59.95) Was $49, Now $44, 18 bottles available

Roberto Voerzio Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2004 1.5L ($699.95) Was $569, Now $499, 12 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 98 points
“Voerzio no longer makes his Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate. The 2004 is a great reminder of just how fabulous this wine was. A huge, vertical wine, the 2004 boasts magnificent depth and overall intensity. The flavors are boldly sketched in a dramatic Barolo built on pure muscle. A host of black cherry, cloves, smoke, menthol, tar and blackberry jam flow through to the intense finish. Beguiling and powerful, the 2004 will provide fascinating drinking for the next 10-15 years, perhaps longer. Of all the 2004s here, this is the wine that has had the most positive evolution in bottle.” (05/2015)

Felsina Berardenga Maestro Raro Toscana IGT 2012 750ML ($59.95) Was $49, Now $44, 30 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94+ points
“Fèlsina’s 2012 Maestro Raro (Cabernet Sauvignon) is a real head-turner, although it is also an infant and in need of considerable cellaring. A bold, dark wine, the 2012 is vivid in the glass, with remarkable detail for such a big wine and exceptional overall balance. The 2012 is sweeping and dramatic in style, with plenty of that year’s exotic fruit and opulence, along with plenty of sweet tobacco, rosemary, sage and cedar notes that add nuance. The 2012 needs time to fully meld together, but it is fabulous, even today.”

Nino Negri Vigneto Fracia, Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2010 750ML ($39.95) Was $33, Now $28, 15 bottles available

Sizzling New Arrivals from California

Guarachi Family Wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Broken Rock is one of the best wines I have tasted from Guarachi. A host of graphite, smoke, lavender and plum notes open up in the glass, followed by a kick of serious 2013 tannins that gives the wine much of its pulsating energy and vibrancy. Saline notes continues through to the bright finish. The Broken Rock brings fruit intensity and minerality together in a delicious, full-throttle Cabernet that is going to need a few years in the cellar to fully come together. Still, the 2013 is impressive, even today.”
James Suckling 92 points “A red with a pretty density of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. Full body, solid tension and a flavorful finish. The finish is exciting. Drink now.”
Robert Parker 91 points “The beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc) has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, lush and impressive. This is a nice surprise from a winery I had not previously experienced. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Louis M. Martini Lot No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($119.95)
$99 special
Robert Parker 96+ points “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 1 was aged 21 months in 96% new French oak and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with nearly half of the fruit source coming from Atlas Peak and the rest from various sites in Napa Valley – primarily Stags Leap. This is typical of the vintage: it was abundant (784 cases produced), dramatic and flamboyant in terms of the style of wine produced. As I have told many readers in other reviews, 2012 is somewhat reminiscent of 2002 Napa Cabernets in their lushness, forwardness and drama. This is a big wine (15.5% alcohol) with great intensity and plenty of crème de cassis, giving it a rather classic aromatic and flavor profile, a full-bodied, unctuous mouthfeel, terrific purity and a long finish with no evidence of any new oak, which tells you how the fruit has absorbed all of the wood. To reiterate, it was a big crop, with 784 cases produced, making it the fourth largest cuvée of any of these Lot 1s in the vertical. Drink it over the next 25-30 years.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
James Suckling 95 points “I am always a fan of this wine with its dusty, red-tile and rust character, which underlines the fruit and ripe tannins. Full-bodied, powerful and tannic, all the way up to the flavorful finish. Give it three or four years to soften.”
Robert Parker 93+ points “A 15- to 20-year wine in terms of its aging potential is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard. A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, aged 27 months in a combination of French and American oak, the wine is dense, full-bodied, with notes of dusty, loamy soil interwoven with crème de cassis, blackberry, toasty oak and hints of chocolate and espresso. This is another full-throttle effort (15.2% natural alcohol), richly layered, with moderate tannin. It is accessible now but capable of lasting 25 or more years.”

Parker’s PickOne of our most popular Spanish reds!

(And an incredible bargain)

Robert Parker’s #1 Red Wine Pick from Jorge Ordonez Selections

Bodegas Triton Tridente Tempranillo Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon 2015 750ML ($19.95) $18 special
Case-12 Bodegas Triton Tridente Tempranillo Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon 2015 750ML ($249.95) $189 special (that’s only $15.75/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Robert Parker 94 points
“The 2015 Triton Tinta De Toro is a stunning wine from this relatively modest appellation and vineyard owned by Jorge Ordoñez and his partners. The wine, 100% Tinto de Toro, spent eight months sur lie in Burgundy and Bordeaux barrels. It is a killer example of Toro, which produces relatively full-throttle, intense wines from ungrafted vines. This beauty, inky purple in color, offers up notes of graphite, forest floor, blackberry and cassis in a full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal, long, rich and concentrated style. At $20.00 it is a remarkable value and probably capable of lasting up to a decade, although there is no reason to defer your gratification.”

New Releases from Cayuse

Cayuse Vineyards Cailloux Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2014 750ML ($149.95)
$119 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95-97 points
“The only Syrah to incorporate Viognier, the 2014 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard is co-fermented with 7% Viognier and brought up all in puncheons. The Viognier shows on the nose and it has a floral, perfumed bouquet of ripe berry fruits, plums, orange blossom, fruit cake and mulled spices. Picking up a touch of green olive with time in the glass, this full-bodied, ripe, downright sexy beauty will have two decades of longevity.”Cayuse Vineyards Armada Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($169.95) $136 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points
“From a vineyard that has the highest clay content of all the estate vineyards, the 2013 Syrah Armada Vineyard is a classically built Syrah that has lots of northern Rhone-like meaty, gamey notes as well as ample dark fruits, beef blood and savory herb-like aromas and flavors. Possessing a rich, multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, fine tannin and notable acidity, give bottles 3-4 years in the cellar and enjoy through 2033.”

ForadoriStriking Elegance

Arriving Next Week

How are we write about the wines of Elizabetta Foradori? And, for that matter, who are we to write about the wines of Foradori?  The usual flowery phrases are somewhere between inadequate and nonapplicable.  Her long-time USA importer Louis/Dressner offers greater insights, so allow us to quote liberally:“How can one try to describe the wines of Elisabetta? It’s easy to say that, in this case, the grape does not fall far from the vine or the hand that cultivated it. Foradori – immediately striking, gracefully elegant, discerningly tasteful, soberly serious while at the same time wry and playful, and above all always generous and sincere. Wait, is that Elisabetta or her wines? In fact, it could easily be used to describe one or the other….

“A path of questioning, experiment and intuition (that included everything from biodynamics, to massale selection and the use of amphorae) eventually led her to give up any sense of chasing market trends of the ‘wine industry’ to develop the estate towards the goal of making wines respectful of the soil and the local grapes she wants to honor, and using the techniques she found more interesting, less invasive, and more wine ‘holistic.’

“In a lot of ways, she has come far, but we think, that for Elisabetta, like for other great grower/winemakers we are privileged to work with, it is a process, and one that doesn’t necessarily end…”

We’re excited to have these wines to sell—they’ve become a bit scarce (we blame the New York market) and so we don’t expect any individual wine to stick around too long at our “best in USA” pricing.

The Mineral Reds and Whites of Henri Prudhon

Most of the time when the phrase “cult wine” is used we think of small production, pricy wines with lots of points.  But, every now and then, we see a wine that breaks that mold and the wines from Domain Henri Prudhon are prime examples.  They aren’t expensive (or big or rich) but they are hard for us to source because they occupy a unique place in the Burgundy world.  For one, they’re incredibly fairly priced, which seems to be rarer than ever before in Burgundy, but most of all, they’re mineral driven wines—even the reds.  These are red and white Burgs for lovers of dry Riesling.  High in acid, bright but with just enough fruit to tie everything together they have a crunchiness to them that can be hard to find.  We’ve probably said more than we should already, but here’s your first chance at them—and we can’t promise they’ll be available after arrival.Henri Prudhon Wines Arriving April 21st :

Henri Prudhon & Fils Les Castets, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
“An overtly floral nose displays nuances of citrus and apple along with a hint of pear. Here too there is good volume to the vibrant flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel and a subtle minerality before terminating in a persistent if mildly austere finale. This understated effort should drink well young if desired.”—Burghound

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Henri Prudhon & Fils Sur le Sentier du Clou Blanc, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($49.95)
$39 pre-arrival special
Burghound 89 points “There is better layering to the pure, elegant and fresh aromas of white orchard fruit, acacia blossom and lemongrass. Once again there is better volume and intensity to the rich and more refined middle weight flavors that deliver a lovely and refreshing salinity on the dry, clean and focused finish.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!
Henri Prudhon & Fils Les Perrieres, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 pre-arrival special
Burghound 90 points “Reduction presently dominates the fruit though it probably won’t last. On the positive side there is excellent vibrancy and intensity to the well-defined yet rich medium-bodied flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the more complex and focused finale. I like the balance between the mid-palate fat and moderately firm acid spine that should enable this to drink well young but age well over the mid-term.”Henri Prudhon & Fils ‘En Jorcul’ Bourgogne Blanc 2014 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
“Pear, citrus and once again white floral scents serve as a fresh and cool introduction to the sleek, delicious and appealingly vibrant flavors that possess a rounded and textured palate impression while offering reasonably good depth and persistence on the citrus-tinged finale.”—Burghound

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!
Henri Prudhon & Fils Les Frionnes, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($37.95) $33 pre-arrival special
“Light ruby. The pretty nose displays aromas of rose petal, cherry and exotic tea. There is fine detail to the more overtly mineral-inflected flavors that possess both fine intensity and excellent persistence though the balance isn’t perfect as once again there is a hint of asperity.”—Burghound
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Henri Prudhon & Fils Les Rouges Gorges, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($37.95) $33 pre-arrival special
“A discreet hint of wood serves as an all-but-neutral backdrop for the ultra-fresh, bright and cool aromas of rose petal, red raspberry, cherry and wet stone nuances that can also be found on the slightly bigger and richer middle weight flavors that deliver fine persistence on the saline-inflected finish. This will need a few years to flesh out.”—Burghound
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Henri Prudhon & Fils Sur le Sentier du Clou Vieilles Vignes, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($37.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Burghound 89 points “A strikingly pure nose is comprised of essence of red and dark pinot fruit aromas that are liberally laced with floral and discreet earth nuances. There is good volume to the very round, intense and detailed medium-bodied flavors that exude both hints of salinity and minerality on the punchy and mildly austere finale. This relatively powerful effort is the most complete wine among the St. Aubin offerings.”

Masterful Meursault from Matrot
Good Meursault is a unique being in the wine world.  Richer than Puligny, it nonetheless should have snappy acidity and a vein of minerality that keeps the richness moving forward.  Meursault has power in a way that other good white Burgundy doesn’t often—a directness, as if the wine is saying “Hey! Buddy! Over Here!” in a stern voice.  Matrot is one of the established names in the village, known for wines that are expressive and profound, both on release and with age. Their wines from the 2014 vintage are exactly as good as you’d hope from a great white Burgundy vintage.  We got a little Charmes and touch more Perrieres in, but these are always popular, so if you want 6 or 12 bottles for your cellar, you should act quickly.Arriving Late April:

Domaine Matrot Charmes, Meursault Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Lime blossom, lemon candy, mineral and toasted spice aromas and flavors mark this lithe, vivid white. Remains pretty compact on the finish, with terrific energy, light tannins and a chalky feel. Best from 2018 through 2024.”

Domaine Matrot Perrieres, Meursault Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “This starts out shy, and needs about an hour to reveal the tightly wound apple, lemon oil, stone and chalk flavors. All the elements are fused together by a laser-like backbone of acidity. Terrific length. Best from 2019 through 2028.”

Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Vineyard Gnarly Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 2014 750ML ($54.95)
$41.90 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 95 points “Another fabulous wine, although there’s not much of it, is the 2014 Zinfandel Gnarly Vine Monte Rosso Vineyard from this fabulous first-growth vineyard in Sonoma. This is a blend of 97% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah aged in 66% new French oak, 16% new American oak and the rest used. Only 500 cases were made of this whopper, which is full-bodied, has great intensity with a stunning nose of black fruits, pepper, Mediterranean herbs and spice. Good natural acidity gives focus and vibrancy to this wine that comes from vines as old as 120 years. This is a full-bodied classic Zinfandel at its very best, from one of the great vineyards in California. Finished alcohol is 16.2%, so this is a heck of a mouthful.”
