We won’t bore you with more prose on the incredible wines of Gaja—just read our introduction to the incredibly priced “Collection” six-packs further down the newsletter.  No, these are fantastic wines at bonkers-good prices, all in very small quantities.  From aged single-vineyard Chardonnay to back vintage cru wines to half bottles of Barbaresco, we’ve got a little bit of everything.Just Arrived: In Stock Now:

A great wine from an outstanding vintage—it’s a pity stock is so low.
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Langhe, Piedmont 2008 750ML ($499.95) $299 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 96+ points
“Good medium red. Perfumed nose combines minerals, rose petal, menthol, spices and herbs. The tightest of these 2008s, but already displaying outstanding energy and precision to its intense dark fruit and floral flavors. The firm, late-arriving tannins are perfectly supported by strong dark fruits on the back end. This wonderfully juicy wine boasts a near-perfect balance for extended aging. A knockout in the making.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Gaja’s 2008 Sori San Lorenzo is impeccable from start to finish. The 2008 is a round, seamless San Lorenzo with seemingly no hard edges and terrific overall balance. The signature aromas and flavors are there, as is the wine’s typical gravitas, yet the 2008 has an extra level of sweetness, its size notwithstanding. The wine possesses striking inner perfume and fabulous overall balance. The sheer excitement of the very finest years isn’t quite there, but this is a fine bottle just the same. An explosive, juicy finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.”

Gaja’s Cabernet is one of the secret powerhouses of Italian wine.
Gaja Darmagi Cabernet Sauvignon Langhe, Piedmont 2012 750ML ($279.95) $119 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The powerful and impeccable 2012 Langhe Darmagi is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a tiny drop of Merlot mixed into the blend. The wine is gorgeous and shows extremely well in this warm vintage. It opens to dark penetration and a thickly extracted, but always elegant style. The tannins are very well managed with soft contours and a firm inner crunchiness that adds backbone and determination. Softer layers of cherry and blackberry fuel the long, opulent finish.”
James Suckling 94 points “A truly excellent Darmagi in a classic cabernet style with blackcurrant, mint, blackberry, stones and ginger. Full-bodied, chewy and polished. Undertones of citrus. Super red. Almost all cabernet sauvignon with 3% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Better in 2019.”
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “The 2012 Darmagi is a ripper, more voluptuous and sexy wine compared to the 2013. Made from 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc brought up in barrels and larger oak casks, its deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by loads of classic Cabernet dark fruits, damp earth, graphite, and obvious minerality. With sweet, polished tannin and plenty of fruit, it’s a pleasure bent, yet elegant beauty that will keep for 15-20 years.”

Half bottles of his most popular bottling, from a legendary year. A winner!
Gaja Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont 2010 375ML ($119.95) $79 special, 10 half-bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Smack from the start, the 2010 Barbaresco shows full-on Gajissimo personality with irresistible opulence and intensity, magically contrasted against remarkable smoothness and finesse. Everyone wants to know his secret. The wine delivers seductively rich concentration and integrated oak that is offset by a delicate portfolio of chiseled mineral, dried berry fruit, Spanish cedar, crushed herb, anisette and blue flower. Fruit is sourced from 14 vineyards in Barbaresco. It already leaves a mark, but will reward those who wait. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Tinged with new oak that lends a spicy impression, this red evokes cherry, menthol and underbrush notes. Supple and beautifully balanced, with a long finish. Best from 2015 through 2025. 2,100 cases made.”
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Good bright medium red. Enticing, nuanced nose offers red berries, red cherry and spicy, earthy underbrush. Rich, broad and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth perfume and tension. Seemed to shut down in the glass, showing a penetrating juicy quality and finishing with suave tannins and terrific length. A splendid Barbaresco.”

Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Langhe, Piedmont 2014 750ML ($499.95) $349 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 97+ points
“The 2014 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is the most virile and explosive of Gaja’s Barbarescos. Dark, brooding and powerful, with a huge spine of tannin, the San Lorenzo is utterly regal in the glass. Gravel, smoke, menthol, tar, licorice and a host of sepia-toned fruits build into a crescendo of aromas and flavors that is truly compelling. What a gorgeous wine this is.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Earthy notes lead off, followed by cherry, plum, graphite and tobacco flavors. Starts out broad and muscular, with a thick layer of tannins for support, yet gains elegance with aeration. A tad austere on the finish, but stays vibrant and long. Best from 2021 through 2036. 170 cases imported.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “Gaja’s 2014 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is clearly at the beginning of a long and promising aging trajectory. At it’s core, it shows a pinch of nervous energy and inner tightness that will surely unravel and soften as this beautiful wine continues along its magical journey in time. Angelo Gaja and his family present spectacular results in this controversial 2014 vintage. They have risen far above most of their peers and have shown a keen ability to understand their site and the versatility of their cherished Nebbiolo grape. The variety sings with a loud and exuberant voice, first offering plenty of primary fruit like blackberry and dried cherry. It then follows up with savory earth and spice. This is a bright and youthful wine that is set steady for a long aging future.-Monica Larner”Half bottles are always popular, especially of a big bold red like this.
Gaja Ca’Marcanda Magari Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2015 375ML ($79.95) $49 special, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso Magari is a dark, rich and exuberant wine that so faithfully reflects that unique Gaja signature. There’s nothing not to love here. The wine drinks beautifully and smoothly, caressing all the senses with sensual silkiness. The 2015 vintage delivers plump and extra supple fruit that further underlines the house style at Ca’ Marcanda. Dark berries and spice intermingle with seamless intensity. The wine offers firm grip and long-lasting power on the finish. This is Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Some 120,000 bottles were produced.-ML”

What a find—ten+ year old Brunello, great producer, sub $100 price-tag.
Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Rennina, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2008 750ML ($179.95) $99 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“In a vintage where so many wines already appear tired, Gaja’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina jumps from the glass with vibrant aromas and flavors. Violets, black cherries, tobacco, licorice and menthol all appear later, adding further shades of complexity. The tannins are firm yet beautifully integrated. Pieve Santa Restituta fans know than Rennina can be deceptively medium in body, yet it has a great track record for aging. Today, the wine is simply gorgeous. This is one of the few 2008s I would buy to cellar. There is little doubt the Rennina is one of the standouts in 2008.”

Gaja’s whites have long captivated collectors and it’s rare to find them this discounted.
Gaja Alteni di Brassica Langhe, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($149.95) $65 special, 30 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 91 points
“The delightful 2015 Langhe Alteni di Brassica is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc. This is the only white wine in Angelo Gaja’s line that does not complete malolactic fermentation. The bouquet is exuberant and bright with green notes of salvia, wild oregano and white pepper. Those sharper tones are followed by bright layers of tropical fruit and zesty citrus. Drying mineral notes give sharp contours to the overall effect.”

The most notable Chardonnay in Italy.
Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay Langhe, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($249.95) $149 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points
“A fantastic white and one of the best of Italy for this vintage. Layers of fruit give cooked apple, mango and papaya character and there’s a mineral undertone. Full body. Bright acidity manifests in a searing backbone. Serious white! Drink or hold as long as you like.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points “From a hot vintage, the 2015 Langhe Gaia & Rey shows similar excellence as presented in the 2013 vintage, although its attributes are different. That wine was direct and linear reflecting the cooler summer months. This wine, however, promises to be more tonic, sharp and focused despite the warmer growing season. This pure expression of Chardonnay is made in a more reductive style in order to highlight that nervous and bright vein at the back. The winery is switching over to older barrique (some as old as a decade) and botte grande to allow for less oxygen in winemaking. The wine opens to aromas of Golden Delicious apple, white peach, wild sage, ginger and honey. This white wine shows enormous potential for further aromatic development and intensity.”

Big, rich and seductive—and properly aged.
Gaja Rossj-Bass Langhe, Piedmont 2007 750ML ($99.95) $59 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 90 points
“Bright yellow-gold color. Complex aromas of yellow fruits, flowers and honey. Supple, fat and almost surprisingly sweet for this bottling, but with lively acidity guaranteeing freshness. Finishes with noteworthy persistence. I like this chardonnay’s combination of richness and verve, and prefer it to the 2006.”

Il Poggione’s Paganelli Riserva
If you like Brunello, we’ve got an incredible offer for you—Il Poggione’s Riserva Vigna Paganelli for under $80/bottle.  It’s a stunning price and unfortunately quantities are limited (we were only able to secure 48 bottles at this tariff).  This is the lowest price in the country by a mile—the next best price for a bottle is nearly $20 more expensive.  The average listed price online is $110—fully $30/btl more expensive than what we’re offering it at today. This isn’t from some shabby vintage, either: we’re talking the excellent 2012—a big, powerhouse bottle that’s critically beloved and will age for decades if you want.If you’re unfamiliar with the wines of Il Poggione, let’s catch you up quickly.  They are a classic Brunello Brunello producer working with very traditional methods in the subzone of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a region that tends to produce wines with big, bold personality.  Whereas some of Il Poggione’s neighbors take this natural abundance and add plenty of new wood and extraction, the attitude at Il Poggione is much more minimalist.  The resulting wines are both crowd pleasing (rich fruit, up front aromatics) and intellectually stimulating (age-worthy, not obstructed by new oak) in way that is truly special.

This crazy price is limited to stock on hand, so lovers of Brunello ought to jump on this quickly.  This is an outstanding wine at a bonkers price and a deal that won’t be back anytime soon.

Just Arrived, In Stock Now:

Il Poggione Vigna Paganelli, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2012 750ML ($129.95) $79 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “Here’s a beautifully rich and succulent Brunello that drinks very nicely straight out of the gate. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli delivers a warm, inviting and velvety presentation. This bold wine is redolent of black cherry and dried blackberry with sweet almond, toasted spice and balsam herb on the long finish. What stands out most, however, is the wine’s rich texture that floods the mouth from front to back. That richness is fueled by the warmth of the vintage but also by the magnificent oak integration. This Riserva is aged in botti grandi for four long years. Bottle production is 45,000 strong.-ML”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Big, but polished, this full-bodied wine offers subtle, alluring aromas of baked plum, fragrant blue flower and pipe tobacco. The succulent, chewy palate brings juicy Morello cherry, raspberry jam and licorice tones framed in firm, velvety tannins. Drink 2020–2030.-Kerin O’Keefe”
James Suckling 97 points “Rather sweet due to the super ripe vintage. But there’s also great subtlety, enormous depth and a ton of tannin behind the opulence. The super long finish is incredibly focused. Try to wait until at least 2020. This stunning Brunello has decades of life ahead of it.”

Gaja’s “Collection”: Peak Piedmont

This might be our deal of the year—a iconic set of wines at a price that we’re having a hard time believing.  We’re offering you a mixed six-pack of the 2014 Gaja Cru Barbarescos for $1,100 less than their average online listed prices.  These are wines that usually retail from $400-$500 per bottle, going for $266.50/ea by the six-pack—an insane savings and one any collector is going to want to jump on now.

Gaja is an iconic producer in the world of wine.  What DRC is to Burgundy, Gaja’s cru bottlings are to Barbaresco—they are the wines that put the region on the modern wine collector’s map, desirable long before anything else in their appellation was.  Like most pinnacle wines, they’re usually quite expensive—at our prices, though, you’d have a hard time finding something more collectible and profound.

Indeed, the pricing we’re offering you today is nothing short of ridiculous—one of the best deals we’ve put out this year.  Gaja’s “Sori” wines are bottlings that inspire reverence and awe—aging for decades and being the centerpiece of any cellar.  We only were able to secure five six-packs at this astounding pricing (of which only three remain), so don’t hesitate if you love Gaja’s wines.

Case-6 Gaja Collection (Assorted Crus), Barbaresco 2014 750ML ($1,999.95) $1,599 special (that’s only $266.50/bottle!)
A Six Bottle Case of two 750ml bottles each: 2014 Gaja Sori Tilden, 2014 Sori San Lorenzo, and 2014 Costa Russi.

2014 Sori Tilden
Antonio Galloni 97 points “Sweet rose petal, mint, chiseled red-toned fruit and chalk give the 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn its sculpted, brilliant personality. All the elements are in the right place. A wine of translucent energy and weightless elegance, the Sorì Tildìn is hauntingly beautiful today. A host of floral notes and red berry fruit infuse the persistent, chiseled finish in this fabulous Barbaresco. As it so often is, the Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a wine of pure charm and seduction.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Menthol, pressed rose, woodland berry and crushed herb aromas slowly emerge on this elegant, structured red along with a hint of underbrush. The firm, refined palate delivers Marasca cherry, ground clove and licorice framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2022–2034.-Kerin O’Keefe”
James Suckling 96 points “The nose has it all here with fresh cranberry character, brambleberries and lavender intermingled with darker, more complex notes of cedar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Full body, so much vibrant acidity, tangy fruit, expansive yet tight tannins and a long, savory finish. Profound minerality. Delicious now but better in 2020.”

2014 Sori San Lorenzo
Antonio Galloni 97+ points “The 2014 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is the most virile and explosive of Gaja’s Barbarescos.
The variety sings with a loud and exuberant voice, first offering plenty of primary fruit like blackberry and dried cherry. It then follows up with savory earth and spice. This is a bright and youthful wine that is set steady for a long aging future.-Monica Larner”
James Suckling 95 points “This is closed at first – indeed it’s just a baby – but soon opens up with some air to display wild strawberries, red cherries, cedar and nutmeg. The palate is full but very tight and refined, showing firm, grippy tannins that need time, driven acidity and a long, minerally finish. Better in 2020.”

2014 Costa Russi
Antonio Galloni 96 points “Soft contours, silky tannins and sweet, perfumed fruit are some of the signatures in the 2014 Costa Russi. As always, Costa Russi is the most polished and open-knit of these wines in its youth. Succulent fruit, hard candy and lifted, perfumed aromatics give the 2014 considerable early appeal, but I expect time in bottle will work its usual magic. Today, the 2014 is showing only the barest hint of its potential. Even in the early going, though, the Costa Russi is a totally sexy wine.”
Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Intense scents of cherry, star anise and iris float out of the glass. It’s firmly structured and loaded with finesse, offering crushed raspberry, Marasca cherry, cinnamon and star anise framed fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity lends balance and energy.-Kerin O’Keefe”
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2014 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a beautiful wine that delivers profound color saturation with deep ruby highlights and blackish intensity. I would describe the nose as being more horizontal rather than vertical, if that makes sense. In other words, the bouquet makes its approach with wide intensity and large-scale aromas of black fruit, spice, tar, leather and licorice. It offers fewer of the sudden high notes or moments of sharpness that you get in 2013. Despite the common perception that this was a very cool vintage, the fruit here actually tastes riper and rounder than you might expect. That’s because the vintage heat all came toward the end of the growing season, and the Gaja family left fruit on the vines to the end. In the mouth, the wine shows depth and finesse with some stubborn firmness at this young stage. It needs to flesh out further with more bottle aging.-Monica Larner”

A Case of Three Bottles: One Bottle Each 2015, 2016, and 2017 Sequitur Pinot Noir

2015:
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 95 points “Deep brilliant red. A strikingly complex bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-accented red berries, cherry cola, vanilla, five-spice powder and sandalwood. Alluringly sweet, seamless and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of juicy acidity. Delivers a compelling blend of power and delicacy and finishes extremely long and smooth; rounded tannins frame the lingering red fruit preserve notes.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Pale to medium ruby purple in color, the 2015 Sequitur Pinot Noir has a very provocative nose of Bing cherries and cranberries over a core of red roses, game, yeast extract and underbrush. Medium-bodied, with wonderful energy and freshness, it has a lively backbone and long finish paved with very fine, ripe tannins.”

2016:
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 96 points “Glimmering red. A hugely aromatic bouquet evokes fresh red fruits, Asian spices and potpourri, along with a bright mineral overtone and a touch of smokiness. Juicy, seamless and precise on the palate, offering potent, mineral-laced raspberry preserve, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out steadily on the back half. Delivers a compelling blend of power and finesse and finishes with silky tannins, outstanding clarity and floral- and mineral-driven persistence.”
Wine Advocate 94+ points “Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Sequitur Pinot Noir has a lovely, open nose of black and red cherries and blackberries with notions of wood smoke, turned earth, autumn leaves, cardamom and potpourri. Medium-bodied, it floods the mouth with ripe black and red fruits with wonderful earthy/spicy accents, very fine, grainy tannins and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long with spice and floral layers. 480 cases produced.”

2017:
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94-95 points “Lurid red. Spice-tinged blackberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of cola, incense and smoky minerals. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated dark berry and spicecake flavors and suggestions of rose pastille and mocha that build with air. Concentrated but also vibrant and precise in style, delivering superb finishing cut, well-knit tannins and impressive, fruit-driven persistence. (30% new French oak).”
Nick Stock-jamessuckling .com 96 points “Beautifully deep, blueberries and plums on offer with notes of fresh violets and moist, fresh-tilled earth. This is full of life and very pure. The palate has focused and fresh tannins that sit in very vibrant style with a deep push of concentrated blue fruit, holding the finish in superb style. So fresh and long, this will age well. Drink across the next decade or more.”

Long Shadow’s Gift Box: For Washington Wine Lovers
Long Shadows was created to highlight the best that Columbia Valley wines could be.  Allen Shoup, the founder of Chateau St Michelle, wanted to create a winery solely for the purpose of showing off the best qualities of Washington wine.  Rather than create one winery, though, he created a set of them—with the best winemakers in the world each having an equity stake in a brand that was tailored to their vision and what they did best.  The collection of talent and vineyard material were both impeccable and the results are obvious—these are spectacular efforts. As in past years, we’re offering a gift box with one bottle of each of six wines in the collection, each one distinctive and excellent.  From the classic Cabernet made by Randy Dunn, to Phillipe Melka’s spin on the Columbia Valley to John Duvall’s brooding Syrah, these are all fantastic wines in an extremely attractive gift box.  It’s in stock now, perfect for holiday gifting.

In Stock Now:

Case-6 Long Shadows Vintners Collection, Columbia Valley 2016 750ML ($449.95) $349 special

Contains one 750ML bottle each of Long Shadows’ six acclaimed red wines, packaged together in a beautifully etched wood box. (2016 Pirouette, 2016 Feather, 2016 Pedestal, 2016 Chester-Kidder, 2016 Sequel, 2016 Saggi)

Pirouette:
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “The 2016 Pirouette is made by Philippe Melka and it’s a total blockbuster based on 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and the palate Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec that was fermented in barrel and aged 22 months in 75% new oak. Crème de cassis, blackberries, toasted spices, cedar, and forest floor notes all emerge from this deep, rich, opulent red that has sweet tannins, a thrilling texture, no hard edges, and a monster finish. This is another best-to-date from this estate and it’s an awesome wine.”

Feather:
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Made by California’s Randy Dunn, the 2016 Feather is, as always, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and spent 22 months in 90% new. It has a classic, firm, focused style in its crème de cassis, spicy oak, and graphite bouquet. This carries to a concentrated, powerful Cabernet that has beautiful mid-palate depth, ample tannins, but more than enough fruit. It will keep for 20 years or more.”

Pedestal:
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “The 2016 Pedestal from Michel Rolland checks in as a blend of 75% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot that spent 22 months in 85% new French oak. It has a rocking bouquet of smoked black fruits, espresso, chocolate, and tobacco that gives way to a full-bodied, plump, incredibly sexy red that does everything right. It’s one serious mouthful of Merlot and should keep for 10-12 years.”

Sequel:
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Sequel is another ripe, sexy, yet pure and balanced vintage for this cuvée. Lovely blackberry, smoked earth, graphite, and ground pepper all flow to a medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant wine that packs less of a punch than normal, yet is balanced and layered, with a great finish. It will benefit from a year or two in bottle and keep for a decade.”

Saggi:
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “The 2016 Red Wine SAGGI is mostly Sangiovese but has 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Syrah. Medium ruby-colored, with notes of ripe cherries, spice box, and dried flowers, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, present yet ripe, polished tannins, terrific balance, and a clean, graceful finish. It’s certainly one of the best expressions of Sangiovese coming from Washington.”

Chester-Kidder:
The back bone of this wine is Cabernet from Walla Walla and nearby Candy Mountain.  Its deepness and darkness is Syrah from the estate’s Benches Vineyards with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.  Aromas of dried figs and cocoa powder, along with hints of tamarind and toasty oak are followed by intense violent and blueberry jam flavors beautifully integrated around a spicy core.

“Châteauneuf-du-Pape fans will find plenty to like from 2017, a vintage marked by consistently warm to hot weather that yielded distinctly rich, fleshy, fruit-driven wines. The growing season presented its share of challenges, and yet the best wines are compelling…

“Generally speaking, 2017 is shaping up to be a hypothetical blend of the two vintages that preceded it. The wines show lots of the richness of the 2016s along with some of the structure that marks the 2015s. It is unquestionably a high-quality year for the region, and a number of wines that I’ve tasted can compete with the same producers’ 2016s and ’15s, if in a somewhat darker guise…

“Over the last year, the 2016s have been putting on weight, believe it or not, and a number of them are actually showing nicely right now, even if their fruit is still leaning heavily to the primary side…. In 2016 consumers have a wealth of choices, since many of the wines are show-stoppers….Like the 2009s, I will be surprised if the 2016s ever go through an extended closed, much less dumb stage, given their opulent fruit and well-absorbed tannins. I also believe that many of the wines will surprise people with their ageworthiness, as their fruit, while ripe and rich, is seldom jammy or cooked. If the style of 2016 is in your wheelhouse, it is definitely a historic vintage and one to explore in depth.” – Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘Old Hill Ranch Heritage’, Sonoma Valley 2018 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2018 Old Hill Ranch Heritage comes from a vineyard planted to a field blend of over 30 varieties, with a good amount of Grenache, that has been farmed organically since the 1960s. Medium ruby-purple, it has a bright, open nose of stone fruit salad, blueberries, black cherries, Earl Grey tea leaves, dried citrus peel and tree bark with oodles of exotic spices and dried flowers. Medium to full bodied, it’s tightly coiled but intense in the mouth, with a chewy frame and wicked juicy acidity, finishing very long and technicolor. Yes!-EB”

Arriving ETA March:Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle, Rhone 2017 750ML ($219.95) $189 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 98 points

“The 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle comes from the firm’s vineyards on the western half of the Hermitage slope, primarily Le Méal, but with substantial contributions from Les Rocoules and Les Bessards. Classic notes of cassis, black olives, mocha and roasted meat are joined by hints of baking spices in a wine that’s full-bodied, deep, dense and rich, with a velvety texture and a lingering finish. It’s lower in alcohol than the 2018, less voluptuous and maybe just a step behind that monumental wine, but it’s still a serious collectible with three decades of evolution ahead of it.-JC”Jaboulet Aine Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage, Rhone 2017 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points
“Marked by scents of licorice, plum and cassis, the 2017 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert is a full-bodied effort (although less full than the 2018), with a fine sense of balance, a crisp finish and slightly drying tannins.-JC”

A Case of Vinsanity

Six Packs, On Sale

We think a six bottle case is a perfect quantity of wine for serious bottles.  It’s large enough that you can get into a bottle or two early while having enough wine around to age.  Unlike a twelve bottle case, it’s small enough to be affordable and ensure the diversity of your cellar.  We’ve got a ton of great case-6 specials (you can see them all in our webstore) but we’ve got a few highlights for you, as well.

A killer Gigondas with big fruit and big personality.

Domaine des Bosquets Gigondas, Rhone 2016 750ML ($31.95) $26 special
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“Leading off the wines from bottle, the 2016 Gigondas is a classic wine from this estate, offering a deeper ruby/purple color as well as tons of garrigue, peppery spice, and earth intermixed with ample red and black fruits. Polished, rounded and sexy, with sweet tannin, it has a modern style that won’t appeal to traditionalists yet is beautifully done. The blend is 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92 points “Vivid ruby-red. Lively, expansive red berry, floral pastille and white pepper scents, along with suggestions of garrigue and smoky minerals. Sweet, focused and seamless in the mouth, offering juicy raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. Clings with very good authority on the gently tannic finish and leaves succulent floral and herb notes behind.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 points “Hints of garrigue accent raspberries and Rainier cherries in the 2016 Gigondas. This blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied and supple, with no hard edges, just lovely fruit. Long, seamless and delicious for drinking over the next 6-7 years, it’s a terrific introduction to the fruit-forward style at this estate. Tasted twice with consistent notes.”

The sleeper hit of the Mordoree lineup, this is a big, dense Chateauneuf.

Domaine de la Mordoree Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Dame Voyageuse, Rhone 2016 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points
“The new entry-level release from this estate is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Dame Voyageuse, a more Grenache-dominated blend of 90% Grenache, 4% each of Mourvèdre and Syrah, and the balance Counoise and Vaccarèse. Aged mostly in tank, with 15% in old barrels, it boasts a deep violet/purple color as well as a full-bodied, voluptuous style in its blueberry and cherry fruits, violets, damp earth, and spice-laced aromas and flavors. This cuvée is always more upfront and sexier compared to the more structured La Reine des Bois cuvée, and it’s already drinking brilliantly today. Nevertheless, it will keep for a good 10-15 years if you’re so inclined.”

“As always, the 100% Syrah 2015 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (Ri) shows more minerality than the VIT release and offers blockbuster styled aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, crushed rocks, toasted bread and chocolate. Made in a voluptuous, pedal-to-the-metal style, with huge fruit and texture, it has building tannin and an uber sexy, incredibly layered and decadent palate. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. This cuvee was completely destemmed and aged 18 months in demi-muids.”Grimaldi has emerged as a star Barolo producer and we offer incredible pricing.

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“($80) From the less-traveled Roddi township, the 2015 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is a balanced and pretty expression that shows floral aromas of wild rose and pressed violets, followed by wild berry and blackcurrant. The wine is simple and straightforward in delivery with a clean and accessible personality. Bruna and Franco Grimaldi purchased this vineyard site in 2006, and this wine has improved in complexity and depth with each vintage that I taste. Some 6,000 bottles are made.”

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina Vigna Regnola, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“($90) This wine has already evolved to show some tar and savory aromas. The 2015 Barolo Badarina offers pretty color saturation with linear and fresh lines of plum, black fruit, dark spice and tilled earth. The wine delivers much of the heft and power promised by this Badarina cru in Serralunga d’Alba. If you’re looking for a Barolo vintage to pair with a rich meat like liver or game, this could be the one. This is Bruna Grimaldi’s flagship Barolo, as her mother was born in Badarina and this site has always had special meaning to her family. Some 8,000 bottles were produced.”

“This shows the vivid, racy side of Barsac, with streaming flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, green plum and white ginger, displaying lovely energy from start to finish. Ends with enough honeysuckle and orange blossom notes to balance the richness. Best from 2020 through 2035. 4,000 cases made.”

Chateau Lilian Ladouys, Saint-Estephe 2016 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
James Suckling 93 points
“The blueberry and blackberry aromas are certainly attractive here. Full-bodied and dense with a very velvety texture and a long, generous finish of ripe fruit and spice. Drink from 2022.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “A perennial overachiever, the 2016 Château Lilian Ladouys brings the goods in 2016 and has a complex, medium to full-bodied, character-filled style to go with loads of blue fruits, incense, dried herbs, and a hint of violets. A blend of 62% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot all raised in 30% new barrels, this charming, front end-loaded effort is well worth seeking out. It should keep for 10-15 years.”
Neal Martin – Vinous 92 points “This is the third time I have tasted the 2016 Lilian Ladouys in bottle. It retains a very intense blackberry and boysenberry bouquet laced with minerals, but displays a little more amplitude than it did in August. The tightly knit palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and still shows the graphite seam that I remarked upon previously. There is a little more persistence now, hence the slightly higher score. Good potential.”
