Dönnhoff’s Best Vintage Ever?

Woo boy—the hype train is here for the 2019 German vintage and it’s totally deserved. Many experts are calling it the best vintage since 2001 and some are going further than that. “The 2019 vintage is the best vintage I have ever tasted for German Riesling in my four-decade career” declares Stuart Pigott, who literally wrote a book devoted to the grape.  Let that sink in: Best. Vintage. Ever.

Even in a region that’s been spoiled for good years this millennium, the level of praise we’re seeing for 2019 is off the charts, and so is demand for the wines.  We’ve been hearing requests for top names for months and are finally able to offer these wines—at excellent pricing.

To kick off our series of ’19 German offerings, we’re starting with one of the grandest names out there: Dönnhoff.  They need little to no introduction, as one of the greatest producers of white wine in the world, but we’ll just pass along what Cornelius Dönnhoff said about the vintage. He described the year by saying “2019 is a classic German vintage with an acidity structure like 2001, but combined with much more ripeness.”

Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2019 1.5L ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 100 points
“Ravishing bouquet of a thousand golden fruits and a staggering interplay of diamond-bright acidity and great succulence. Then, just when you think you’ve processed all that, along comes a monster wave of minerality, which sweeps you off your feet. But you land on the beach, deliriously happy. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95-96 points “The 2019 Riesling GG Dellchen is enormously fine and elegant on the subtle but fascinatingly complex nose that intertwines stony notes with yellow-fleshed stone fruit aromas. On the palate, this is an intense, highly finessed and elegant Dellchen with incredibly refined juiciness and great balance and purity. The finish is very long and complex but keeps the finesse and purity. Very stimulating and salty—a great Dellchen GG and one of the finest I have had from Cornelius Dönnhoff! Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93-95 points “The 2019 Riesling GG Felsenberg is pure, fresh and flinty on the precise, perfectly ripe and complex nose. Lush and generous on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense, salty, remarkably finessed and structured Felsenberg Riesling with lingering salinity and crystalline character. The finish is dense and very complex yet vital, fresh and long, with lots of expression. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

“The enveloping, peachy aroma with just a whisker of fresh pineapple leads into a mind-boggling micro-cosmos of flavor that’s simultaneously rich, yet also supernaturally delicate. Sublime balance through the enormously long finish. Great aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96-97 points “The 2019 Riesling GG Hermannshöhle offers a pure, intense, complex and flinty bouquet with dashes of lemon juice and crushed stones. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and salty-mineral Riesling with great finesse, tension, balance and site expression. The finish is very long, salty and tight yet stimulating in its bright and precise nature. A fantastic Hermannshöhle! Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

Weingut Donnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken 2019 750ML ($41.95) $36 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“At once generous and crisp with plenty of pear and fresh-pineapple character, then a long chalky finish that reminds you of Chablis. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
John Gilman 92+ points “The Kahlenberg vineyard in Kreuznach is a due south facing slope with a soil foundation of gravelly loam, making it quite unique in terms of its soil composition in the pantheon of Dönnhoff vineyard holdings. The 2019 Kahlenberg Trocken is a svelte and utterly refined young Riesling, offering up a gorgeous bouquet of pink grapefruit, apple, orange peel, a complex base of soil tones, a touch of wild yeasts, fruit blossoms and a hint of lemongrass in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, fullish and laser-like, with a lovely core, fine soil signature, vibrant acids and outstanding length and grip on the nascently complex and energetic finish. This is truly outstanding juice! 2020-2060.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92-93 points “The 2019 Riesling trocken Kreuznacher Kahlenberg is clear, pure and flinty on the bright yet intense, concentrated, exciting and stony-scented nose. From pebbly loess and loam soils, this is a lush, salty, very fine and stimulating dry Riesling with very attractive fruit, lingering salinity and fine grip. Really stimulating. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

Weingut Donnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett 2019 750ML ($31.95) $27 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“Prototypical Kabinett with a light body, effusive red apples, then a long, mineral finish. Did somebody say this was an off-dry wine? Yes, but the balance make it extremely food-friendly. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink now. Screw cap.”
John Gilman 91+ points “The 2019 Krötenpfuhl Kabinett is really lovely this year, offering up excellent depth and intensity of flavor with the classic filigreed lightness of step of Kabinett. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a complex blend of apple, a touch of passion fruit, citrus blossoms, a complex base of minerality and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and beautifully defined by its minerality, with excellent acids and grip, fine focus and balance and a long, complex and dancing finish. This is excellent. 2020-2050+.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90-91 points “From very pebbly loess soils, the 2019 Riesling Kabinett Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl is bright and sulfured on the precise, elegant and refined nose. Round and elegant on the refined palate, this is a very accessible Kabinett with flesh and texture and almost a Spätlese character. Pleasantly salty on the intense and persistent finish. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese 2019 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 100 points
“All of nature’s springtime joy and the epitome of autumnal ripeness somehow combine with summer-morning dew to offer one of the greatest off-dry German wines made in modern times. Breathtaking finish, so wonderfully light and filigree. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
John Gilman 95+ points “The Dönnhoffs’ 2019 Hermannshöhle Spätlese is another absolutely stellar wine in the making. The purity and precisely-cut nature of the 2019 vintage is on display here in spades, as the bouquet delivers a gorgeous combination of pink grapefruit, apple, iris blossoms, bee pollen, still a hint of wild yeasts, orange zest, an exotic hint of mint and a kaleidoscopic base of slate minerality. On the palate the wine is pure, refined and fullish, with gorgeous filigree and nascent complexity, a fine girdle of acidity, laser-like focus and a seamless sense of balance and grace on the very long, vibrant finish. The 2018 Hermannshöhle Spätlese was flashier out of the blocks, but my gut feeling is that the 2019 version is going to just edge it out over the long course of their respective lives in bottle. This is an understated and utterly beautiful wine. 2025-2060+.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2019 375ML ($69.95) $54.50 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 99 points
“Welcome to the Nahe Riesling deep end, from where you can look up and still see the sun. Enormous depth and complexity at the spectacular finish, but oh, so filigree! An absolute masterpiece of winemaking in the off-dry riesling style! Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2019 Riesling Auslese Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle is crystalline and flinty on the precise, ethereal and bright nose that represents the terroir of the Hermannshöhle beautifully and irresistibly. On the palate, this is a highly finessed, filigreed, playful and delicate Auslese with stimulating piquancy and salinity on the weightless and frisky but elegant finish. This is a fascinating Auslese with great detail and precision. Personally, I even prefer this clear and bright version (AP 17 20) to the richer, sweeter and more concentrated one that will be auctioned (AP 19 20) and possibly has the greater aging potential. However, both will live longer than I will anyway. Tasted in May 2020.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese 2019 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 95 points
“This is a totally charming beauty with succulence that’s hard to resist and mineral freshness that lifts the wine beautifully. Long, complex finish with multiple moments of tension. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
John Gilman 93 points “The 2019 Norheimer Kirschheck Spätlese from Weingut Dönnhoff is utterly classical in profile and an outstanding wine. The bouquet is so precise and pure, jumping from the glass in a blaze of apple, pear, bee pollen, spring flowers, a lovely foundation of slate minerality and lilacs. On the palate the wine is crisp, refined and medium-full, with lovely intensity of flavor and bounce, zesty acids and outstanding focus and grip on the complex and perfectly balanced, seamless finish. A beautiful wine and tout en finesse. 2020-2060.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese 2019 375ML ($69.95) $54.50 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 98 points
“So pure, cool and refined on the nose and a spectacular interplay of ripeness and crystalline brilliance on the palate. Super crisp, super long finish that’s so delicate. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Wait, if you can, for this to really open up in 2023 or 2024. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2019 Riesling Auslese Oberhäuser Brücke offers a bright fresh and very delicate raspberry and yellow plum aroma on the stunningly precise and finessed nose. On the palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, refined and digestible Auslese with tension, piquancy, grip and salinity. This Auslese is well-concentrated but not overly sweet and almost impossible to mediate with. You simply drink it too fast. The finish is very subtle, clear, fresh and long. A gorgeous Auslese. Tasted as a sample in April, it was bottled in May 2020 (AP 16 20).”
John Gilman 96 points “Readers may recall that the 2018 Auslesen in the Dönnhoff cellars were non-botrytized wines, which is an extreme rarity at this estate. The 2019 Brücke Auslese is a return to the norm here, as this wine is glazed with an absolutely pristine coating of botrytis. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a celestial blend of apple, mango, honeycomb, apple pie spices galore, a fine touch of salty minerality and a potpourri of fruit blossoms in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and utterly seamless, with great focus and bounce, a lovely core of fruit, ripe, refined acids and stunning length and grip on the nascently complex and oh, so pure finish. This is stunning juice! 2029-2075.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2019 1.5L ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 94 points
“Super sleek and super minerally with lovely, lemony freshness. Yet, this is neither sweet nor tart, rather elegant and very filigree. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
John Gilman 93 points “As I mentioned last year, the Leistenberg vineyard has the oldest vines of all the Dönnhoff parcels and these old vines seem to really be handling the new realities of global warming beautifully. The 2019 Kabinett comes in at nine percent alcohol and delivers a superb aromatic constellation of apple, white cherry, a bit of wild yeasts, spring flowers, bee pollen and a lovely base of slate. On the palate the wine is bright, fullish and filigreed, with lovely intensity and bounce, zesty acids, lovely focus and grip and a long, complex and perfectly balanced finish. As always, this is a first class example of Kabinett. 2020-2050+.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90-91 points “The 2019 Riesling Kabinett Oberhäuser Leistenberg is pure, precise and flinty on the coolish and stony nose. Juicy, precise and flinty on the palate, this is an elegant, crystalline, very intense and charmingly juicy Kabinett with a long and aromatic finish. Highly attractive as always. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese 2019 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 97 points
“If you dream of the great German rieslings of the 1970s and 1980s, then this is a wine for you, even though it is riper and more concentrated than those icons of the past. In spite of the abundant generosity, this has a very long, distinctly cool finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
John Gilman 94+ points “The 2019 Brücke Spätlese from the Dönnhoff family is a superb follow-up to their stellar 2018 version. The wine offers up an outstanding and very complex nose of apple, passion fruit, a hint of blood orange, gorgeous minerality, bee pollen, apple pie spices, orange blossoms and a nice touch of citrus zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, focused and racy, with superb mineral undertow, a lovely core of pristine fruit, lovely focus and balance and a long, zesty and utterly refined and vibrant finish. This is another gorgeous Spätlese, but it is a bit more reserved out of the blocks than the Kirschheck Spätlese and deserves some time in the cellar to reach cruising altitude. 2024-2060+.”

Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken 2019 750ML ($47.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92-93 points
“Tasted as a sample in April 2020, the 2019 Riesling trocken Roxheimer Höllenpfad is intensely fruity and even flinty on the nose. It comes from a steep, south-facing VDP Erste Lage vineyard on red sandstone soils. This is a juicy, round and intense dry Riesling with texture, power and grip—a mouth-filling wine with good mineral backbone and lingering salinity and vibrancy. Very stimulating!”
John Gilman 92 points “The beautiful red sandstone of the Höllenpfad vineyard in Roxheim makes this another quite unique bottling in the Dönnhoff family’s lineup. This is a very steep slope and the vines here are between ten and forty years of age. The 2019 Höllenpfad Trocken is beautifully spicy on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet jumping from the glass in a fine mix of pink grapefruit, tart orange, a wide array of spice tones, complex minerality, lemongrass and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a rock solid core of fruit, an excellent girdle of acidity, lovely focus and grip and a long, minerally and nascently complex finish. Though this is the same 12.5 percent octane as the Kahlenberg Trocken, this is the more muscular wine this year and I would opt for giving it at least a few years in the cellar to let it blossom a bit more completely before entertaining ideas of drinking it. The wine will be outstanding in due course. 2024-2060.”

Weingut Donnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken 2019 750ML ($29.95) $27 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“Wonderful, peachy fruit and minty freshness draw you into this sleek and very racy wine that has a ton of minerality, yet remains medium-bodied. The very solid, crisp finish suggests very good aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 91-92 points “The 2019 Riesling Trocken Tonschiefer is clear, deep and complex yet bright and refined on the delicately fruity nose. Juicy and mouthfilling yet dense, piquant and structured on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, very fine and elegant dry Riesling with a salty-piquant and pure finish. Highly stimulating and with grip. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”
John Gilman 91 points “The fruit for the Tonschiefer Riesling bottling from the Dönnhoff family hails primarily from the Leistenberg vineyard in Oberhäusen, with its grey slate mineral foundation helping to define this wine’s personality. The 2019 Tonschiefer comes in at twelve percent alcohol and delivers a fine aromatic constellation of lemon, sweet grapefruit, apple, lovely slate minerality, dried flowers, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of citrus peel. On the palate the wine is deep, pure, elegant and complex, with a full-bodied, racy profile, a fine core and outstanding cut and grip on the long, perfectly balanced finish. This is fine juice. 2020-2045.”

Weingut Donnhoff Estate Riesling 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 92 points
“A very attractive, just off-dry riesling with tons of fruit-salad character, but no hint of anything banal. Quite the opposite in fact, as this is precisely balanced and has a long, very clean finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink now. Screw cap.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2019 Riesling (Estate) is bright, clear and fresh on the nose, even flinty. Round, pure and lush on the palate, this is a medium-sweet Riesling with great finesse and the typical Mosel lightness and piquancy. Beautifully straight and full of character. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”
John Gilman 90 points “The 2019 Estate Riesling from Weingut Dönnhoff is traditionally finished in a Feinherb style, but I do not have the technical details on the wines this year. The wine offers up a lovely nose of apple, peach, tart orange, a complex base of soil (the vineyards sourced for this wine include volcanic and slate soils), citrus peel and a floral topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, medium-full and complex, with a lovely core, fine mineral drive and grip, a fine girdle of acidity and a long, classy finish. This is really good. 2020-2040.”

Donnhoff Estate Riesling Trocken 2019 1.5L ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 91 points
“A basket full of summer fruit with tropical nuances on top, making this an extremely attractive, dry estate riesling with a satisfying hint of tannin and lively acidity at the finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink now. Screw cap.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90-91 points “The 2019 Riesling Trocken is clear, bright and remarkably finessed in its fruit aromas and lovely stony notes. Medium-bodied this is a very elegant, refined and linear dry Riesling with stimulatingly piquant acidity and mineral purity. A gorgeous wine and a picture-book Riesling from the 2019 vintage. Stimulating lemon zest and juice flavors on the salty aftertaste. Highly recommended. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”
John Gilman 90 points “The 2019 Estate Riesling Trocken is all sourced from fruit grown on volcanic soils in and around the village of Oberhäusen. The 2019 version comes in at 11.5 percent alcohol and offers up a beautifully refined bouquet of apple, tart orange, wild yeasts, floral tones redolent of iris blossoms and lilacs, a fine foundation of minerality and a touch of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and racy, with a fine core, outstanding mineral drive and grip and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. I loved the 2018 version of this wine, but the 2019 is even a touch more refined than that lovely bottle! 2020-2040.”

“Bright medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of black fruits, licorice and fresh herbs. At once supple and precise, with juicy cherry fruit dominating. On the lean side but offers very good focus and cut. The black cherry quality carries through to the firmly tannic yet pliant finish.”
Antonio Galloni 87-88 points “The 2010 Nuits St. Georges(from tank) reveals dark shades of fruit with more depth than the Bourgogne. It comes across as fleshy and round. Hints of tar, licorice and violets add complexity on the finish. This is a very pretty villages.”

“A spicy and slightly floral nose also features cool and pure aromas of primarily red berry fruit and soft earth hints. There is a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grained tannins that shape the middle weight flavors as well as the delineated, dusty and lingering finish.”
Antonio Galloni 89-91 points “Beams of bright acidity and minerality run through the 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Chaignots. Freshly cut flowers, mint, dark raspberries and chalk flow effortlessly. This is a decidedly vertical Nuits built on energy. The style is a bit compact, but pretty all the same.”

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Chenes Carteaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($99.95) Was $89, Now $79 Subscriber Special
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Chênes Carteaux has a clean and bright bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, plenty of undergrowth, damp tobacco and roof tile scents. This is very expressive with fine delineation and the linearity that it demonstrated from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tensile tannin, plenty of citric fruit, quite linear at the moment with a sense of energy on the stony, stoic finish. Excellent.”
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “Blue and purple fruit, smoke, licorice, violets and cloves flesh out in the 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Chênes Carteaux. This is an especially round, supple Chênes Carteaux with tons of near and medium-term appeal. The round, silky finish is polished and beautifully resonant, all of which suggest the 2012 will drink better earlier than some of the other wines in this range.”
Burghound 89-92 points “Here too there is a touch of spice on the well-layered nose of both red and dark currants that is liberally laced with pungent earth notes. This is bigger and richer than the Chaignots with excellent volume, punch and power, all wrapped in a detailed, saline and impressively persistent finish. While the structure is firm, the tannins are relatively fine-grained and the overall impression is not especially rustic.”

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Pruliers, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($119.95) Was $99, Now $89 Subscriber Special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93-95 points
“The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers has a more feminine, more fruit-driven bouquet than the NSG Clos des Porrets, very pure crushed strawberry, red cherry and cranberry aromas that gain intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with blood orange on the entry, plenty of lively red berry fruit with admirable mineralité and tension on the finish. This is a superb les Pruliers from Domaine Gouges and it should give a couple decades worth of drinking pleasure.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “A chunky block of cherry, raspberry, sweet smoke and stone flavors, locked in a grip of tannins, with plenty of rich, ripe fruit to match. Best from 2022 through 2035. 125 cases imported.”
Stephen Tanzer 91-93 points “Good medium red. Very reticent aromas of plum, licorice and menthol hint at a chocolatey ripeness. In a rather rich, fat style, offering good concentration and sappiness to the thick, deep flavors of dark raspberry, spices and bitter chocolate. Comes across as a bit more tannic than the preceding samples, and perhaps a touch warmer at 13.2% alcohol. This fruit was picked two days later than the adjacent Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges.”
Burghound 90-93 points “This too is firmly reduced. The velvety, round and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors also possess excellent volume and mid-palate concentration with a very high level of phenolic maturity to the firm supporting tannins on the moderately austere and rustic finale. This too is very definitely classic Nuits in character that will require plenty of patience.”

“Bright medium red. Reticent high-toned aromas of slightly jammy red fruits and earth. Sweet and ripe; richer and deeper than the Porrets Saint-Georges, with silky red cherry, currant and spice flavors enlivened by pungent peppery acidity. Nicely balanced, round wine with good buffering extract.”

Neal Martin-Vinous 92 points
“The 2008 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet with cranberry, pomegranate, bergamot and Vervane tea aromas that gently unfold from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite crisp and certainly conveying more energy and tension than the 2007. It gently fans out towards the finish that is a little ferrous in style, with a dash of cracked pepper on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.”
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(this wine, the Vaucrains and the Saint-Georges were bottled in April of 2010): Good bright medium red. Enticing, very pure aromas of cherry, raspberry and flowers. Quite juicy and precise; not a fleshy wine but intensely fruity, taut and pure. Impressively long, rising finish. Gregory Gouges told me he finds most of the family’s 2008s to be agreeable now and probably best drunk early for their youthful fruit. He’s not convinced that the wines have enough dry extract for extended aging.”
Burghound 90-92 pointsSweet Spot Outstanding “Here is a distinct herbal character to the spicy red berry fruit and earth suffused nose that marries into rich, supple and attractively detailed middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate concentration and culminate in a complex, harmonious and precise finish. A Pruliers of finesse and refinement.”

“Translucent red. A wild, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, exotic spices and candied flowers, with smoky mineral and incense notes that acquire strength as this youthful wine gains its footing. Stains the palate with vibrant raspberry, bitter cherry, star anise and rose pastille flavors that show a compelling blend of depth and litheness. Fine-grained tannins build slowly on a strikingly long, finely etched finish that features baking spice, floral and subtle earth notes.”
James Suckling 95 points “An earthy thread here with more savory, herbal and gently spicy notes, as well as graphite. Latent red cherries, too. The palate has a very sleek and succulent feel with evenly cast, sturdy tannins that harness great length and depth. Powerful yet measured and all about the earth. Try from 2023.”
Erin Brooks – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2017 Pinot Noir Marjorie Vineyard was made with 51% whole clusters and aged 18 months in 75% new French oak. Medium ruby, it has a very pretty nose: nuances of crushed stone, Campari, earth and blood orange mingle over a core of red and black cherries, rhubarb and cranberry. The medium-bodied palate has lovely, nuanced, amaro-laced flavor layers with a softly chalky frame and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 384 cases produced.”

James Suckling 95 points
“This cuvée has a very energetic and intense feel with a wealth of fresh and attractive red cherries and raspberries, plenty of florals and subtle herbal, forest-wood and light-chocolate notes. There’s a very keenly articulated feel to the palate with a plush, very fleshy and assertively long, detailed finish. Deep fruit presence here. Drink across the next decade.”
Josh Raynolds 93 points “Vivid red. Expansive aromas of ripe red berries, candied flowers and baking spices, with a smoky mineral topnote that gains strength as the wine opens up. Coats the palate with appealing sweet raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors that tighten up and become spicier on the back half. Shows excellent clarity and floral lift on an impressively long finish that’s shaped by fine-grained, even tannins.”

A stellar value Super Umbrian wine.

Great value from a cult-favorite Beaujolais producer.
Domaine Lucien Lardy Fleurie Les Roches Vieilles Vignes, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points
“Translucent ruby color. Displays deeply perfumed red and blue fruits, candied violet and a hint of exotic spives on the expressive nose. In a weighty nut still energetic style, offering sweet boysenberry, black raspberry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that tighten up steadily on the back half. Finishes with serious intensity, sharp detail and discreet tannins that come on late.”

Casa Castillo has turned into one of the iconic producers in southern Spain.
Casa Castillo Las Gravas, Jumilla 2017 750ML ($37.95) $33 special
Case-12 Casa Castillo Las Gravas, Jumilla 2017 750ML ($419.95) $369 special (that’s only $30.75/bottle!)
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Las Gravas is surprisingly floral and ethereal, perfumed and elegant. Syrah has disappeared from the blend of this wine—it now has 20% Garnacha to complement the Monastrell—and they think this is going to be the blend that stays in this wine, which has seen more changes in its life than the rest of the portfolio. This is for sure the most elegant vintage for this bottling; the wine matured in 500-liter barrels and then spent four months in 5,000-liter vats after the blend was done. There are no aromas of oak whatsoever, and the wine is surprisingly fresh, as if the Garnacha helps to contain the power of Monastrell on the gravel soils, adding texture and perfume. This is beautiful. 26,500 bottles were filled in March 2019.”

Sette Ponti’s Stunning Super Tuscans

Sette Ponti makes some of the finest Super Tuscans out there. They’re best known for Oreno, one of the most recognizable names in the Super Tuscan field.  Year after year, Oreno delivers rich, dense wines from the clayey and limestone soil that are delicious on release but evolve into really spectacular drinks with a few years of age on them. There’s no Sangiovese in the blend and the wine would be a sneaky ringer in a Second Growth Bordeaux tasting—it’s that good.

The other wine of note in most years is their value-priced Crognolo.  Made with every bit the same care as the flashier Oreno, Crognolo’s Sangiovese dominant blend provides a beautiful drink-now option at less than half the price of the flagship wine.

“Gorgeous floral and deep, dark berry aromas with hints of spices such as cinnamon and hazelnuts. Full body and ultra-fine and strong tannins that are powerful yet so sleek and beautiful. Fantastic length and texture. Deep, dark and profound. Takes you on a long journey and shows you its true character. Better in 2025. Give it time.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Petit Verdot (10%) are assembled with precision and balance. The 2016 Oreno is a fantastic expression from Tuscany that blossoms with each swirl and tilt of the glass. This is a full-bodied red with generous aromas of black fruit, spice, tobacco and soft spice. The wine rests in new French barrique for 18 months. Some 45,000 bottles were produced.”

Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana IGT 2017 750ML ($34.95) $24 special
Case-6 Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo Toscana IGT 2017 750ML ($249.95) $132 special (that’s only $22/bottle —the lowest listed price in the country!)
James Suckling 94 points
“A balanced and fresh red for the hot 2017 vintage with medium body, fine tannins and plenty of currants, blackberries and blueberries on the finish. Drink or hold.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “A beam of pure blackberry runs through this otherwise dense and focused red. Shows elegance, with balance and complexity, but needs time to integrate and reveal all its facets. Offers fine, minerally length. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2032. 7,500 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.”

Rose of the Day

New Review for a Provencal Classic

In Stock Now:

Chateau Pradeaux Le Cotes de Provence Rose 2019 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Grapelive 94 points
“One of the Rosés of the year so far, the alternative version from Bandol’s famous Chateau Pradeaux that’s labeled as Cotes de Provence Rosé, is made from 45% Cinsault and 40% Mourvedre along with small doses Grenache and Carignan making for a full flavored, but wonderfully dry example of what this region, set on the Mediterranean, is most known for, high quality pink wines to enjoy all day and all year….The 2019 Chateau Pradeaux Cotes de Provence Rosé is bright, mineral driven and layered on the palate with classic Bandol character and substance in a slightly fresher and lower alcohol style with crisp detailing showing crushed raspberries, tart cherry, strawberry, Summer melon and zesty citrus along with hints of earth and spice. This wine gains intensity and body with air as well as adding crushed wet stone, floral rosewater and saline or sea shore elements, this Pradeaux, led by the high percentage of Cinsault really seduces the senses and is exceptionally refreshing with an inner energy and brightness that keeps all the flavors in balance. While the main Bandol Rosé is awesome and a touch more serious, this Chateau Pradeaux Cotes de Provence Rosé is an outrageous value and lacks for nothing in terms of taste and depth, I highly recommend snapping this vintage up, it looks to have another year or two of drinking pleasure ahead of it too, though I wouldn’t likely have that kind of patience! …After a short maceration on the skins, the Rosé, in order to extract a vivid color, the juice is fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks, according to the winery, to retain freshness, fruit and bouquet. This dry pink was aged about 6 months in cement cuves on the lees, then usually wine is bottled in the Spring of the year following harvest. This is a fabulous Rosé to experience with Fall sunsets and close friends, don’t miss it!”
