Repricements!

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2003 750ML ($599.95) Was $519, Now $499, 3 bottles available
Robert Parker 98+ points “One of the most backward yet promising wines of the vintage is the 2003 Harlan Estate. Its dense opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of graphite, camphor, creme de cassis, smoky barbecue wood and a hint of forest floor. Similar flavors hit the mouth with full-bodied splendor, a multidimensional mouthfeel and texture, and the sensational finish lasts more than 45 seconds. Some tannins are still present, and this wine seems much younger than expected at ten years of age, so give it 4-5 more years of bottle age and consume it over the following 20-25 years.” RP

New Wine Advocate Reviews for the Willamette Valley

Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate recently visited the Willamette Valley and reviewed releases from some of the top producers we carry. Below is a listing of these newly reviewed wines we have in stock or arriving here soon.

Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley 2013 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 7 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2013 Pinot Gris was cropped at 2.5 tons per acre at 22.5 Brix (the same as the Pinot Blanc), whole-cluster pressed and cold fermented in stainless steel. The aromatics are subtler than the Pinot Blanc with scents of Granny Smith apples and dewy lawn. The palate is well balanced with commendable depth of flavor. This is no anonymous Pinot Gris, but offers some lovely nectarine and Cornice pear notes, touches of lychee that probably come from the “seasoning” of Gewürztraminer and Muscat in the blend. Very fine and unbeatable value.”
Wine Enthusiast 91 points “This full-bodied, lightly spiced wine seduces with fresh fruit flavors of pear, apple, kiwi and melon. Polished and bracing, it finishes with a lick of wet stone.” WE

Antica Terra ‘Ceras’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($89.95) $75 special, 2 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Ceras is Maggie Harrison’s mineral take of Pinot Noir (she actually uses the word “aerial” in her technical sheet). It does indeed offer an ethereal bouquet that is just so succinct: a carapace of dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit interspersed with cold granite, walnut and smoke scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, a lot of salinity and superb tension all the way through to the finish. What a wonderful Pinot Noir – the kind of wine I can guarantee you will finish to the final drop.”

Trisaetum Estates Reserve Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 4 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Estates Reserve aims to showcase the attributes of all three vineyards and spends 18 months in French barrel, around 30 to 35% new. The nose is intense right from the start: dark cherries, wild strawberry and bergamot at first, hints of briar and fresh mint following behind. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin: dark cherries, black plum, a pinch of white pepper and a slight flintiness toward the finish. This is very nicely focused with just a touch of piquancy on the finish. Give it another 12-18 months in bottle and you will have a seriously fine Oregon Pinot Noir. Bravo.”
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Vivid ruby-red. Deeply pitched dark berry preserve, cola and incense aromas show very good energy, with a smoky quality emerging as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, juicy blackberry and cherry compote flavors are lifted and sharpened by a zesty mineral nuance and a hint of fresh flowers. Sweet vanilla and berry liqueur notes build on the finish, which is firmed by youthful, deftly integrated tannins.” JR

Aberrant Cellars ‘Virtus ex’ Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 35 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Virtus Ex comes from Eola-Amity Hills and tends to be the slowest to evolve and what Eric sees as the most Old World influence. The vines are located on volcanic soils and includes 15% whole-cluster fruit due to the relatively longer hang time. It sees 15 months in 42% new French oak. It came in at 3.3 pH and 14% alcohol so no acidification was necessary. The nose makes an immediate impression: redcurrant, wild strawberry and undergrowth, almost mulchy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, plenty of refined red cherry and cranberry fruit interlaced with spice, leading to a finish that has plenty of finesse and Old World charm. This is a superb wine from winemaker Eric Eide.”
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Bright ruby-red. Sexy, spice-laced red and dark berry scents are complicated by notes of cola, mocha, potpourri and smoky minerals. Fleshy, focused and lively, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and cherry pit flavors that tighten up and gain spiciness with air. Packs a serious punch of fruit but comes off as lithe, finishing with excellent thrust and silky, even tannins that add structure.” JR

Brick House Vineyards ‘Evelyn’s’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 36+ bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Evelyn’s is 50 percent Dijon and 50 percent Pommard clone and represents a barrel selection. It was picked October 6-7 and includes 7.5 percent whole-cluster fruit. This vintage includes 50 percent new oak. It has a perfumed, sensual bouquet with tightly wound brambly red berry fruit laced with lavender and rose petal, the oak nicely assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite crisp and tensile in the mouth with touches of orange rind infusing the red berry fruit. Probably the most masculine of the 2012s but it will require a couple of year’s in barrel.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Focused, juicy, precise and expressive, this offers a gorgeously balanced mouthful of plum, currant, red berry and floral flavors that come together harmoniously and persist into the long finish. Has depth and distinction. Best from 2016 through 2022.”

J. Christopher ‘Abbey Ridge’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 1 bottle available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Abbey Ridge Vineyard, which is one of the best sites according to winemaker Jay Somers, is limited to just four barrels from 1.6-acres and sees 25% new French oak. It has a very precise, mineral-driven bouquet that is one of the most Burgundian from J Christopher. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, crisp acidity and a slightly grainy texture, quite saline in the mouth and perhaps just tapering a little toward the finish, although there is a compelling coolness verging on aloofness that ensures this has an intellectual dimension. This was one of the first Oregon Pinot Noirs on my trip to really ram home the quality of its wines. Rocking. Just 48 cases produced.”

Aberrant Cellars ‘Carpe Noctem’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 8 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Carpe Noctem is an individual barrel selection in terms of weight, texture and intensity. It is 75% Eola-Amity Hills and 25% Yamhill-Carlton fruit and undergoes malolactic in barrel, where it is aged for 17 months in French oak (58% new). Deeper in color than the Virtus Ex, it has quite an intense bouquet with a light marine influence upon the dark plum and raspberry coulis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and harmonious tannin, smooth in the mouth with no rough edges, it gradually builds with a peacock’s tail of dark plum, mulberry and hints of dried blood. You could actually broach this now, but I would suggest allowing 12 to 24 months in bottle.”

Aberrant Cellars Amplus, Yamhill-Carlton 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 32 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Amplus comes from a vineyard on the foothills of the Coast Range that Eric Eide started working with in 2011, although in that year he got hit by botrytis, so this marks its debut. It comes from Pommard and 667 clones and was cropped on October 12, including 10% whole-cluster berries. It spends 16 months in French oak, 45% new. It has more red berry fruit on the nose compared to the other cuvées from Eide, with plenty of red cherry, cranberry leaf and damp moss aromas that you might find in a fine Pommard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite tensile tannin and well-judged acidity that neatly cuts through the plush red berry fruit. There is impressive substance here, good backbone and sense of authority that lend the finish persistence. Give this 12 months for the oak to fully integrated and you will have (another) excellent 2012 from Aberrant Cellars.”

Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2011 1.5L ($99.95) $89 special, 10 magnums available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is a vineyard parcel and barrel selection. It was picked October 27 at 22 Brix and 100% de-stemmed, undergoing 45% new French oak. It has quite a dense bouquet with plenty of raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit that is well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin. There is plenty of backbone here, but it is very focused and harmonious with superb tension on the finish. This is an excellent contribution to the vintage—one of the best of Belle Pente’s current releases and well worth hunting down.”

J. Christopher ‘Lumiere’ Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($41.95) $36 special, 12 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Eola Amity Hills Lumiere includes 10% cluster fruit, although Jay Somer told me that there is no intention to rank it up much higher at the moment. It comes from the northeastern flank of the Eola-Amity hills on volcanic soils with a lot of basalt and sees 20 months in 25% new French oak. It has a clean and precise bouquet with red cherries, kirsch and touches of orange sorbet that gain intensity with aeration – great clarity here and a great expression of “the dirt.” The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe, slightly saline fruit, a little grainy texture with good density toward the finish that is a little terse and strict, but displays very fine tension. Superb.”
Matt Kramer ‘My Wines of the Year’–“Oregon Pinot Noir continues to surprise if only because, as a still youthful and hugely ambitious category, it continues to evolve. J. Christopher is a formerly tiny producer that has grown in size thanks to a partnership between founder and winemaker Jay Somers and his new, deep-pocketed partner, German winegrower Ernst Loosen. A new winery was built, and Somers, who is one of Oregon’s finest wine-makers, is now issuing multiple Pinot Noirs, all fashioned in his signature austere, detailed, low-oak style. The 2012 Pinot Noir called Lumiere leaped out when I tasted it for its rich fruit allied with an unusual degree of flavor delineation and easily discerned mineral notes. I was surprised by its exquisiteness in a vintage that trades more in dramatic fruitiness.”

Ayres Pioneer Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 5 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Pioneer is a barrel selection from the Dijon 667 clone. It has an upfront nose with a bit of hubris: blackberry and iodine scents with hints of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity and it is packed to the rafters with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruit. Delicious.”
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Vivid ruby-red. Musky cherry, blackberry and candied rose on the nose, plus notes of musky earth and star anise. Sappy, smoky and deeply concentrated, offering sweet red fruit and licorice pastille flavors and showing an exotic Indian spice nuance. Opens up nicely with air, picking up a hint of cola. Finishes on a youthfully tannic note, with firm grip, lingering spiciness and excellent persistence.” ST

Le Cadeau Vineyard Diversite Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 2 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Diversité comes from a mix of seven clones and was made by winemaker, Schott Schull. It sees 30% new oak for 11 months. It has a deeper color than the Cote Est. The nose is clean and precise with vivacious red cherries, cranberry and wild strawberry scents that gain more and more intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, crisp acidity and plenty of fruit concentration on the finish without detracting from its finesse. This is a very stylish Pinot Noir and one of the finest recent releases from Le Cadeau.”
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola and lavender, with exotic clove and star anise nuances. Smooth and velvety in the mouth, offering sappy flavors of red and dark berries, cherry compote, candied flowers and blood orange. Closes sappy and very long, with resonating spiciness and smooth, late-arriving tannins.” ST

J. Christopher ‘Dundee Hills Cuvee’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 10 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Cuvee comes from five vineyard sources, including Bella Vinda and La Colina. Picked October 11-18, 100% destemmed and matured for 20 months in oak barriques, it has a focused and vibrant bouquet with clean redcurrant and black plum fruit, with just a slight tinny quality coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, understated on the entry, but very nicely balanced with a focused and elegant, feminine finish. There is a sense of suaveness about this Pinot Noir that ticks all the boxes.”

Shea Wine Cellars West Hill Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 5 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Shea West Hill comes from Wadenswil, Pommard, Dijon 114 and 777 clones picked October 7-13 and sees 50% new French and 20% whole-cluster fruit. It has a more cohesive and delineated bouquet compared to the Block 5 with perfumed raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tart red cherry and blackberry fruit bouncing around the entry. There is commendable sense of tension underlining this 2012, more so than the Block 5, and the dash of spice toward the finish is welcome. This is worth seeking out.”

White Rose Estate Guillen Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 5 bottles available
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard Guillen comes from vines planted in 2001, picked October 17-25 at 1.5 tons per acre. It is aged for 16 months in 19% new French oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry aromas with light granitic. I like the intensity here, the focus, with light potpourri and wild heather scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp dark berry fruit with noticeable sous-bois notes, a little grainy tannin, a little herbaceous on the finish, but exhibiting decent length.”
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Brilliant ruby. Sexy, assertively perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, Asian spices and cola, with a powerful floral jolt. Fleshy, sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering vibrant blackberry and cherry compote flavors that are lifted and braced by juicy acidity. Fine-grained tannins build slowly on the strikingly long finish, which leaves smoke and floral pastille notes behind.” ST

Rex Hill Jacob Hart Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Jacob Hart Vineyard was biodynamically certified in 2009. Picked October 8-11, it includes 25% whole-cluster fruit, matured for 12 months in 36% new oak. It has a very precise bouquet that allows the mineralité to show through, very focused and poised with dark cherries, freshly tilled soil, nutmeg and cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin married with a keen line of acidity. It gently builds toward a fresh, nervous finish that lingers long in the mouth. Superb.” WA

Cristom Eileen Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Eileen is the youngest estate-vineyard cuvee that debuted in 2000, so the vines are now around 15 years old, located at the highest elevation (it was once a Christmas tree farm.) It is planted with Dijon clones at 2,300 vines per acre. The nose is very attractive with refined red cherry, wild strawberry and red plum fruit that gently unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a pert entry, crisp acidity and lip-smacking salinity. This is nicely structured with firm backbone that neatly offsets that black fruit toward the grippy finish. Give this a year in bottle and then it should continue drinking nicely over the next decade.”
Wine Spectator 90 points “Firm in texture, with a sleek feel to the spicy plum flavors as they glide into a long and expressive finish, trailing hints of toast and iron as they linger. Best from 2016 through 2020.” WS

Cristom Jessie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 93 points “From the steepest east-facing vineyard with heterogenous soil types located just outside the winery, the 2012 Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard includes about 40 or 50% whole cluster fruit. It has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with generous crushed strawberry and raspberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a lovely mineral-core of fruit cloaked in dark cherry and bilberry fruit. There is fine salinity here, very good depth, with a long and quite powerful saline finish. Excellent.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Fresh and expressive, glowing with blackberry, cherry and floral character as the open texture plays against delicate acidity on the long and inviting finish. Drink now through 2022.” WS

Cristom Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard, which is often the first and last fruit to be harvested because part of the vines lack sunshine late in the afternoon. It has a well-defined and very natural bouquet with ebullient red berry fruit intermixed with rose petals and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, wonderful focus and superb tension right to the finish. This feels a little more compact and backward than Cristom’s other 2012, but there is clearly breeding and sophistication here.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Fine-grained and open-textured, deftly balanced, with root beer accents to the plum and currant flavors. The fruit floats over the tannins as the finish persists expressively. Best from 2016 through 2022.” WS
Arriving April 17th

Brick House Vineyards ‘Les Dijonnais’ Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir les Dijonnais is due to be released this spring. It comes from Dijon clone (113, 114, 115, 667 and 777) and includes 5 percent whole-cluster fruit. Harvested October 6, it sees 40 percent new cooperage. This is much more reserved on the nose compared to the Cuvee de Tonneliere ’12, but displays exquisite delineation with lucid black cherries, dried fig and limestone scents that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and layers of rounded redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate fruit. There is presence rather than weight here, although I suspect it will benefit from a year in bottle once released, probably more for those with patience. Still, this is another outstanding contribution to the vintage from Brick House.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Features more rhubarb and beet notes than fruit, but comes together into a sleek package, incorporating red berry, green tea and spice notes. This has intensity and depth without much weight. Drink now through 2022.” WS

Weingut Nikolaihof

Nikolaihof is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria and Wachau, whose history goes back almost 2000 years to the Roman Empire. Originally chosen by the Romans because it was considered a Celtic holy site prior to 800 B.C., the foundations of the current house date to a Roman tower which existed as early as 63 B.C. Germanic monks obtained the estate during the collapse of Rome, and the first written evidence of winemaking comes from 470 A.D, with the monks documenting their ownership of the vineyard ‘Im Weingebirge’, the earliest named vineyard site in all of Europe.

In 1894, the Saahs family took over the estate and carried on the traditions the monks had established, originally intending the house to be a country retreat. The family have been farming and making wine from the 22 hectares of land ever since, increasing their focus on wine in 1960 when Klaus Saahs inherited the winery from his father. With husband-wife team Klaus and Christine at the helm, Weingut Nikolaihof began practicing Bio-dynamics in 1971, making them one of the first and longest practicing Bio-dynamic wineries in Europe, and the world. In 1985, both Christine and Klaus retired from winemaking duties, passing the reins to their son Nikolaus, who has been bringing his own ideas to the operation, including most notably the refurbishment and use of the estate’s 400-year old wine press. Made from one massive elm tree, this incredible museum piece is the largest, let alone the largest operational, wine press of its kind in Austria.

Nikolaihof still functions as an independent, bio-diverse farm, growing herbs and fruits, even using seeds for grapeseed oil, and a well-maintained vineyard. The average age of the vines at the estate are 48 years old and, as one might expect for practitioners of biodynamics, winemaking is done under fairly rustic conditions. All of their wines are naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts and minimal additional sulfur, in Austrian oak vessels, deep in the cold, 700-year-old cellar. There are many things that make the wines of Nikolaihof unique, from the persistent use of large, ancient oak casks, to eschewing fining and filtration whenever possible. All of this work is done to produce wines that are natural expressions of the grape and aim to preserve the long traditions established at the same estate over 1500 years ago. In their youth the Nikolaihof wines are tight and reticent, showing bright, mineralic flavours with good acidity. In recent years, Nikolaihof has been releasing small amounts of old, bottle-aged library wines called Vinothek, that are a perfect example that these wines greatly repay cellaring, producing wines with sublime purity and balance.

Nikolaihof Gruner Veltliner Hefeabzug 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 4 bottles available
Terry Theise notes: “CORE-LIST WINE. It means sur lie. It’s exotic this year, but has the spicy flowery euphoria of ’13 and its usual semolinasweet lees; less starchy than usual but vastly more floral, as if a potion of wisteria were dissolved in it. Very long wintergreeny finish

Terry Theise notes: “Well this is a miracle-wine. Sparrowy energy; perfumed so pungently it’s like smelling your irises and lilacs from inside the house; a delicate minerality, but this wreaks an utter havoc of charm and deliciousness, all with that delicate woodsy breath of the cellar. Numinously gentle, unforgettable wine.”

Nikolaihof Gruner Weingebirge Smaragd 2011 750ML ($64.95) $55 special, 4 bottles available
Terry Theise notes: “Delicate and soulful. Not a flashy first impression. 12.6% alc. Pea shoot and vetiver and a curious tickle of tannin; a careful beautiful wine with nothing to prove. Again a stirringly mineral finish.I should emphasize, I don’t need to or want to summon any kind of spell when I’m tasting here. I try instead to erase my screen and then transcribe whatever takes place. I mean, the wines are how they are, and I seem to feel my only authentic response is directly into image and metaphor. And the tasting itself is quite workmanlike; 4-5 glasses are lined up and the wines poured into flights, just like anywhere else. And then they start to peal, and the usual deconstruction of flavors just isn’t called for. Better to fall into the aura of the pealing, to hear the complicated overtones, to feel the air between the wine and me. That’s what seems to work.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Steinriesler 1998 750ML ($84.95) $69 special, 10 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Rich bouquet of brioche, acacia blossom, pine resin, sweet hawthorn and lime zest. On the palate, this riesling’s subtler elements are drowned in its supple, yeasty character, but its caramel fruit sweetness is leavened by understated acidity. Finishes long, with flavors of wet stone, anise and baked apple. Very unusual, but in its own way astonishing.”
Terry Theise notes: “”Riesler” is an archaic term for Riesling. Saahs wanted to see how a wine might age in cask without sulfur if it were an ordinary and not a grand wine to begin with. The first example was a glorious 1999, offered two years ago. So what do they do for an encore?Offer something even older. This is a masterpiece of time, nature and instinct. Less “humble” than that ‘99 was, and more insanely, dauntingly complex. I could detail its three paragraphs worth of nuance if I had 40 minutes to study it. Let’s just say, a perfect positive oxidation, a whole encyclopedia of wild flowers and herbs, a mélange of every possible salt, and the gentlest note of allspice and pink peppercorn.”

Terry Theise notes: “Almost rugged and gnarly-that’s ’10 baby. Flowering fields aroma doesn’t specifically signal “Riesling,” but the stretchy sinewy palate scratches that very itch; it’s the sting of mint without the mint of mint.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Vom Stein Jungfernlese 2006 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 18 bottles available
Terry Theise notes: “It means the virgin-vintage, the first crop from young vines. And it’s what the Germans would call Feinherb, and it’s what any sane person would call irresistible! A potion of iris and lavender, spicy and penetrating; very long, seductively earthy, like a really profound Nahe Spätlese, almost the 5-spice and wildflower of Dönnhoff’s Felsenberg.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Vinothek Wachau 1995 750ML ($319.95) $249 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 100 points “Words nearly (!) failed when faced with Nikolaihof’s 1995 Riesling Vinothek, a Smaragd of 12.5% alcohol bottled after seventeen years in cask, and without question one of the most haunting Riesling wines of my experience. Frangipane, chamomile, freesia and rowan in the nose liquefy in a most extraordinary way on a silken palate to achieve an impression of virtually weightless floral perfume that glides all the way through to … well, can you speak of “finish” when a wine doesn’t? Piquant nut oils and peach kernel along with a shadow-like shifting of subtly stony undertones lend counterpoint, enveloping richness, and further mystery to this amazing libation, bringing it, if you will–or at least, trying to bring it–down to earth. I won’t attempt to suggest how long this might continue on its magnificent way, though the closest precedent–Nikolaihof’s 1990 ‘Vinothek’ bottling–isn’t fading. And this 1995 held up superbly for days after opening.”

Nikolaihof Gruner Weingebirge Smaragd 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Terry Theise notes: “Spices and tobacco; an old dialect not only of GV but of wine; a kind of melting exhalation of relaxing, nothing to prove, no point to make, just delicately forceful; at the edge of oxidation, but feels mysterious, not decadent. Banish the noise!”

Nikolaihof Riesling Vom Stein Federspiel 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Terry Theise notes: “Smells like cookie dough! Also notably woodsy, and then the Riesling spice and brightness kicks in; verbena, shiso, bay leaf and an echo-note of marrowy cask. Has complete repose but isn’t at all slack, and the finish peals and clings.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Baumpresse 2006 750ML ($139.95) $115 pre-arrival special
Terry Theise notes: “Expensive, yes, but it’s a bottle of history, the reintroduction of the world’s largest still-functioning wooden press. The wine, in fact Im Weingebirge Smaragd, is out of this world. A swollen extravagantly ripe Riesling, ripe in age and in body; massively juicy and vinous and stocky.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund Reserve 2010 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Terry Theise notes: “Among all the Rieslings I know, this one has the most esoteric mélange of herbs and minerals, like if you took a Geigercounter to the soil programmed to register complex terroir, the damn machine would blow apart in your hands. The ’10 is curious and cunning. It has the oxidative note these have recently had, along with the firm smoky adamance of ’10, and that chartreuse-y herbal thing and the arcane vineyard-geology thing, and ’10’s mulish length, getting almost fiercely spicy with five minutes in the glass.”

Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund Reserve MV ($699.95) $549 pre-arrival special
A case of 6 bottles–1 each 2009/2008/2007/2004/2003/2002
Terry Theise notes: “There are five vintages in the mix—I don’t know which will constitute the extra bottle in a case-of-6. The beautiful 2009 you remember from last year; fresh and pure mineral. 2008 is superb and complicated, with plenty of exotics and Chartreuse-y herbalness to counterpoint its jasmine and white chocolate yang side. 2007 smells like irises; it’s in the typical trough of that vintage but is highly promising. 2004 is astonishing from a good bottle, +++ quality and the best-in-show. 2003 has darkened, but there’s an attractive beeswax note and still some mineral. 2002, while also dark-colored, is a fine lovely “antique” Riesling.”

Isole e Olena Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, Tuscany 2003 375ML ($59.95) Was $49, Now $39
“High-toned nose, rich in dried fruit, marmalade and salted nut aromas. Utterly delicious; intense and crammed with flavour – raisins, figs, orange peel – but relatively light on its feet with cracking freshness.”–Decanter Magazine

Isole e Olena Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, Tuscany 2004 375ML ($59.95) $49 special
Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Deep amber-yellow. Sexy, kaleidoscopic nose combines exotic tropical fruits, chestnut honey, raisin, dried fig, caramel and a musky iodine note. Then sharply delineated and penetrating on the palate in spite of its honeyed sweetness, with superb acidity giving spine to the dried fruit and ripe citrus flavors. This wonderfully vibrant yet thick and rich Vin Santo coats the mouth on the long, smooth finish. Great stuff.” ST

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Annata, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2007 750ML ($189.95) $119 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. The estate’s preference for picking on the early side is one of the factors that help balance some of the fleshiness of the vintage. This is an especially silky, supple Brunello from Biondi-Santi. The overt personality of the year comes through, but not at the expense of the house’s style. Floral notes reappear to frame the elegant, expressive finish.” AG

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Annata, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2008 750ML ($189.95) $119 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is quite pretty in this vintage. It displays a classic profile of underbrush, tobacco, smoke, licorice and black cherries. The tannins are firm but nicely balanced. I expect the 2008 will drink well with minimum cellaring. It is one of the more open Brunellos I can remember tasting here. Still, there is plenty of Biondi Santi kick in the wine’s acidity and tannin profile.” AG

Cerbaiona di Diego Molinari Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2008 750ML ($199.95) Was $140, Now $115
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “Succulent red cherries, dried roses, violets, tar and spices are some of the many notes that are woven together in the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. Intensely perfumed, the 2008 shows many of the classic Cerbaiona signatures, even if it is a touch less polished than some of the recent vintages. At the same time, the 2008 has come together nicely over the last few years, so it will be interesting to watch what happens with further time in bottle. Dried rose petals and spices add complexity to the subtle, layered flavors. This is one of the stronger wines of the year.”

Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana 2005 1.5L ($179.95) $119 special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2005 Cepparello is striking. It possesses stunning depth and a darker profile of fruit than is typical. The 2005 was quite compact when first released, but what a difference a few years in bottle make. Today the 2005 has begun to blossom into a big, dramatic wine for the year. As was the case throughout most of Chianti Classico, 2005 was shaping up to be a great year until the rains arrived just before harvest. This is a fabulous effort on its own, but especially notable for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) Was $59, Now $41.90
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Playing true to type, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit, crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008, though, the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Roberto Voerzio Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2007 750ML ($349.95) $249 special
Wine Advocate 98 points “Voerzio’s 2007 Barolo Cerequio is a wonderful counter to the virile, imposing Brunate. Sweet red fruit, flowers and menthol are woven into a nuanced, textured fabric of notable class and elegance. The Cerequio possesses dazzling inner perfume, silky tannins and phenomenal length. It is a stunning, beautifully articulated Barolo blessed with tons of intensity and compelling overall balance. A final burst of red berries informs the long, explosive, perfumed finish. Stephen Tanzer 95+ points “Full, deep ruby-red. Restrained but highly complex nose melds strawberry, raspberry, currant, mocha and dried flowers; less exuberant today than the Samassa. But the sweetest and lushest in the mouth of these ’99s: hugely rich, creamy and seamless but with terrific supporting vinosity giving it a lightness of touch.” ST

Roberto Voerzio Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2000 1.5L ($499.95) $399 special
Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Highly complex aromas of raspberry, woodsmoke, spices, pepper and Havana tobacco. At once lush and sappy in the mouth, with the creamy sweetness of a fruit liqueur complemented by notes of tobacco, chocolate and mocha. Shows a distinctly roasted character without losing its balance or verve. Explosive, seamless Barolo that saturates the palate with fruit. Finishes with slow-building tannins and outstanding persistence.”ST

Sottimano Curra, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML, ($79.95) Was $59, Now $49
Wine Advocate 92+ points “Sottimano’s 2009 Barbaresco Curra is striking in this vintage. The Curra is often hard when it is young, but in 2009 the wine has a little more volume and richness, which serves to cover the tannins. Bright red berries, flowers, mint and sweet spices flesh out in this radiant, textured Barbaresco. High-toned floral notes flow through to the inviting close. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” WA

Wine Advocate 92 points “A sweet, floral bouquet infused with a note of mint announces the 2009 Barbaresco Fausoni. This mid-weight, gracious Barbaresco is all about finesse, detail and nuance. I very much like the sense of energy here. Firm yet well-balanced tannins frame the long finish. The balance of fruit, acidity and structure is about as harmonious as it gets in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” WA

Domenico Clerico Aeroplan Servaj, Barolo DOCG 2008 750ML ($109.95) $69 special
Stephen Tanzer 94+ points “(from 35-year-old vines in Badarina in Serralunga): Good deep red. Medicinal aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, cherry, menthol and tobacco; very Serralunga. At once suave and penetrating, offering terrific definition and inner-mouth aromatic character. Powerful acidity is keeping this wine tightly wrapped today, but it has buns of steel to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Incidentally, there’s no 2009 Aeroplan Servaj due to a landslide that occurred during a huge rain storm in April of 2009, which also cost Clerico 15 rows of Ciabot Mentin.” ST

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Asili Barbaresco 2005 1.5L ($399.95) Was $319, Now $299
Wine Advocate 95 points “Giacosa’s 2005 Barbaresco Asili is noticeably rounder, sweeter and denser than the Santo Stefano. It shows remarkable balance and harmony in an incredibly pure, graceful style. The tannins are so finessed and elegant it is hard to actually perceive them on the palate. Here too, the wine shows awesome inner balance and poise. Sweet raspberries, flowers, roses and spices are just some of the nuances that emerge from this incredibly delicious, promising Barbaresco. Falletto di Bruno Giacosa ‘Le Rocche del Falletto’ Barolo 2005 1.5L ($499.95) Was $419, Now $379
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 2005 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto is a massive, towering Barolo loaded with tons of rich, primary fruit. The wine remains powerful, dense and muscular with superb length even if it is a smaller-scaled Barolo compared to previous great vintages. That said, when I came back to the wine after it had been in the glass for an hour or so, I found that the wine had grown remarkably. While the 2005 doesn’t have the explosive personality of the 2004, it remains an awesome achievement in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.”WA

Mauro Molino Vigna Conca Barolo 2009 750ML ($89.95) Was $79, Now $49
Stephen Tanzer 90+ points “Serious nose combines redcurrant, spices, minerals and menthol. Shows more structure and energy than the Gancia, but still nicely pliant and sweet in the middle. At once dense and juicy, this rich, broad Barolo is perked up by a pronounced brown spice character that follows through on the persistent, gripping finish, which features strong but harmonious tannins. I’d enjoy the Gancia first and give this somewhat fleshier wine more time in the cellar.”ST

Castello di Neive Santo Stefano Albesani, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 750ML ($59.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2009 Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano unfurls on the palate with layers of highly expressive dark fruit. Hints of menthol, smoke, incense, leather and tobacco appear later, adding considerable depth and complexity. A plush, open finish rounds things out in style. Though fresher than the straight bottling, the Santo Stefano is also remarkably open today. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2024.” WA

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Rabaja, Barbaresco DOCG 2005 750ML ($219.95) $133 special
Wine Spectator 95 points “There’s wonderful perfumes in this young Barbaresco, with flowers and ripe berries, as well as strawberry. Full-bodied, chewy and long. Massive on the finish. A superb wine.” WS
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2005 Barbaresco Rabaja is the densest and richest of these 2005 Barbarescos. Because it is aged in a slightly smaller cask, the wine shows an explosive personality along with some oak nuances that require bottle age to settle down. This muscular Barbaresco resonates on the palate with layers of spiced, mentholated dark cherries, minerals and licorice. It remains a dense, structured and primary wine in need of serious bottle age for the firm tannins to melt away. This, too, is a sublime wine from Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.” WA

Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2001 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Superiore Campolongo di Torbe reveals notable complexity in its suggestions of leather, spices, plums, prunes and roasted coffee beans. Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro Roccamonfina IGT 2006 ($149.95) Was $91.90, Now $79
Wine Advocate 97 points “Once again I am at a loss to capture the sheer beauty of Terra di Lavoro. The 2006 is a remarkably elegant and pure vintage of this wine, where layers of flowers, violets, graphite, tar, smoke and black cherries continually flow from the glass in a dazzling, virtuosic display if power and finesse that is stunning. The wine remains incredibly fresh and primary, with superb detail, especially considering its sheer size. Today the 2006 Terra di Lavoro comes across as suprisingly accessible, but long-time connoisseurs know better; there is plenty of structure underneath. Bisson ‘U Pastine’ Golfo del Tigullio Bianchetta Genovese , Liguria 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “The term U Pastine is from the local dialect indicating a very special product, appropriate for this rare white grape found only in Liguria. Lugano has saved several parcels from extinction and from which he creates a truly unique white wine that is delicate, lively and satisfying, filled with vibrant minerality; it is particularly delightful when married to the white-fleshed fish that frequent the shores of this part of Liguria … the bianchetti, the nasello and tiny, exquisitely flavored langostino.”
