New Piedmont Arrivals

From Cantalupo & Roagna

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo

If you love Barolo and Barbaresco, you should be paying real (fiscal) attention to the wines from Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo, in Ghemme. Cantalupo remains one of the top producers in the appellation, making wines that are traditional with a touch of polish to them. They deserve to be considered among the top wineries in Piedmont, not just in Ghemme.

In Stock Now:

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Colline Novaresi Nebbiolo 2018 750ML ($27.95) $20.90 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 91 points
“The 2018 Nebbiolo Colline Novaresi Agamium is a terrific introduction to these wines. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint and orange peel are beautifully delineated. The 2018s is vinous and fresh, but it also has plenty of depth too. All the elements are impeccably balanced.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo ‘Cantalupo Anno Primo’, Ghemme DOCG 2012 750ML ($44.95) $36 special, 30 bottles in stock now
“The 2012 Cantalupo Anno Primo is a powerful, dark potent wine. Wild cherry, spice, tobacco and menthol contribute to its brooding, somber rustic personality. The 2012 is very big and dense.” –Antonio Galloni

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best listed price is $39.99

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Breclemae, Ghemme DOCG 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2013 Ghemme Collis Breclamae is fabulous. Deep, dark and also translucent, the 2013 possesses magnificent clarity as well as structure. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.”

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Carellae, Ghemme DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2011 Ghemme Collis Carellae is another huge wine in this range from Cantalupo. Sweet red cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, mint, dried flowers and licorice are all amped up here. Even with all of its natural intensity, the 2011 possesses just enough freshness and verve to keep things in check. The 2011 is very obviously a dramatic wine, but all of the elements are nicely balanced.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best listed price is $54.99

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo ‘Mia Ida’ Spumante Brut Rosé, Piedmont NV 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Ian D’Agata-Vinous 92 points
“Very pale pink. Boasts extremely refined floral nuances to the vanilla and red cherry aromas and flavors. Bright and clean, with a lovely creamy presence on the palate and boasting sneaky concentration and complexity, not to mention a long precise finish. Lovely.”

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Signore di Bayard, Ghemme DOCG 2011 750ML ($49.95) $44.50 special, 6 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote
“A special bottling imported exclusively for Vinopolis!”

The average price nationally is $121

Roagna La Pira, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Supple and polished, featuring the essence of cherry and strawberry fruit, accented by menthol, mineral and sage flavors. This shows intensity, with a tightly wound structure that is so well-integrated you don’t notice it at first. Plays out on the linear profile with echoes of fruit, mineral and Langhe scrub. Best from 2022 through 2045. 148 cases made. — BS”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
The average price nationally is $120

Roagna Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont 2019 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The Dolcetto for this wine is sourced from both the Paje and Carso vineyards in Barbaresco, which is part of the Asili hill. Orientation: South, southwest. Soil: Paje is particularly rich in calcareous marl soil with a high content of active limestone. Carso sits next to the fortresses of Barbaresco, facing East, with limestone clay soil and a significant presence of sand. Viticulture: Hand-harvested in September. The vines for this wine have a minimum age of 45 years. Vinification: Fermented lasts for ten days in large french casks with a pied de cuvee made with indigenous yeasts. Submerged cap maceration then follows for 90-100 days. Aging: The wine then ages in neutral french oak botti for approximately one year.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Roagna Langhe Rosso, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The grapes for this wine come from Roagna’s younger vines (25 years old and younger ) in Pira in Castiglione Falletto (Barolo) and in Paje in Barbaresco. Most vines are 20-25 years old. Orientation: South, southeast (Pira) and South, southwest. (Paje). Soil: Varying – Marl, calcareous & Sandy, calcareous. Viticulture: Hand-harvested at the end of September, beginning of October. Vinification: Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap — which can last 60 days. Aging: The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release. Notes: While this wine is made from Luca’s “younger vines,” most producers would use this fruit for their Barbaresco or Barolo. The wine could easily be mistaken for either in a blind tasting.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Arriving Friday, April 2nd:

Roagna Albesani, Barbaresco DOCG 2015 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special, only 11 bottles available
Wine Spectator 93 points
“A combination of spicy cherry, iron, tobacco and tar aromas and flavors are woven into the dense tannins in this sinewy red. There’s an essence of ripe fruit, yet this requires time to reconcile its gripping structure. Best from 2024 through 2043. 218 cases made. — BS”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2015 Barbaresco Albesani is gracious, floral and lifted, which is not common in Albesani, where the wines tend to be more powerful. Bright acids and lively tannins give the 2015 its shape and energy. This translucent, inviting Barbaresco has so much to offer. “

Twill Cellars

Newly Arrived & Restocked

Ask any established Willamette Valley winemaker who their favorite up & coming estates are, and you’ll invariably hear about Twill Cellars. Chris Dickson, one of the genuinely nicest guys we know, crafts unassumingly beautiful and profound wines for this relatively new winery. The Pinots are charming and lithe, yet expressive. But the true magic is in the Syrah. He’s a Northern Rhône enthusiast and it shows in his wines that crackle with energy, showing notes of black pepper, violets, smoke and olives. These are aromatics that you’d expect from fine St Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, but these are all Oregon, baby. He’s a producer on the rise.

In Stock Now:

Twill Cellars Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Smells of tangerine, cream, kaffir lime, saline and toasted grain, with bass notes of peach, cashew and crushed rock. Flavors of sinewy citrus fruits including tangerine, lime, and grapefruit pith are followed with resonating flavors of saline and cream.”

Twill Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Brooding, savory aromatics of dried rose, bitter cherry, earth, blood orange, soy, toasted grain and ripe raspberries. Flavors of blood orange, dark chocolate, warm spices, espresso, and ripe raspberry. Both taut and intense.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Twill Cellars Rosé of Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2020 750ML ($21.95) $19 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“100% Pinot Noir (40% Braken Vineyard, 20% Stormy Morning Vineyard, 20% Johan Vineyards, 20% Vojtilla Vineyard). Our Pinot Noir grapes destined for Rose are picked when they are fresh yet ripe, and are then pressed whole cluster to barrel and concrete egg immediately after picking. The juice then ferments slowly with no added yeast and the resulting wine is left undisturbed to concentrate before bottling in March.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Twill Cellars Stormy Morning Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($49.95) $36 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“2018 wines are impactful, and this really shows through in pinot noir. The Stormy Morning Pinot Noir often has a bloood orange character, and in a year like 2018, that note is not missing. In fact it feels more concentrated. Blood orange, cranberry, cherry skin and rose petal can be noted on the first aromatics. With time, allspice, cola and raspberry can be found. On the palate, deep bright red fruit flavors, spice and citrus resonate through our most concentrated and structured Stormy Morning Pinot Noir to date.”

Twill Cellars Syrah, Oregon 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Saturated aromas of black pepper, olive, and raspberry. With air, secondary notes of tobacco, coffee and licorice. On the palate, raspberry, dark chocolate are lifted with a grapefruit-like iron note. Tannins feel svelte and flavors feel well integrated at this early stage.”

Twill Cellars Steelhead Run Vineyard Syrah, Applegate Valley 2018 750ML ($39.95) $36 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Immediate and saturating notes of tea, blackberry, raspberry and musk are found. This is the most intense and rich Steelhead Run Syrah that we have produced. With time, notes of grapefruit, olive, and chocolate. On the palate, sweet spice, ripe raspberry, chocolate and fig. This is in a great spot currently. There is a little structure, though it won’t require the same rest or long decant as the Stormy Morning.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Petrolo’s Noble Tuscan Wines

Petrolo is one of the leading proponents of the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, a small area in Tuscany that only recently received the DOC designation. Frankly, the designation should have happened a while ago—these are distinctive wines made from unique soils and the quality across the board is very high. Petrolo’s wines provide a wonderful introduction to this undervalued corner of Tuscany due to both their quality, but also thanks to their forward-thinking. Not only do they produce hyper-classic bottlings, like the Bòggina C Classique, but they also defy convention by fermenting the Bòggina vineyard in a variety of different ways. The goal is to show off the inherent quality of the terroir as a through-line between the different bottlings.

To highlight these differences, we’ve brought in mixed three packs of their 2014 Bòggina single vineyard Sangiovese, with two bottles fermented in a traditional way and a third done in amphora. In addition to the three packs, we’re also offering stellar single bottle prices on several of their wines, including the Sangiovese-dominant Super Tuscan, Torrione, from the 2014 vintage, and their traditionally made Bòggina C Classique, from the 2016 vintage. With all of these fantastic choices, lovers of Italian wine should take notice—these are statement bottlings that deserve your full attention.

In Stock Now:

Petrolo ‘Bòggina C’ Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2014 Bòggina is stunning. Although a touch compact in this vintage, the Bòggina impresses for its energy and overall freshness. Red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, tobacco and savory herbs are some of the many notes that continue to open up as the wine takes shape in the glass. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 puts on more weight with time in bottle. It certainly improved over the time I followed it.”
James Suckling 93 points “Very fine and silky with a tight and polished texture that shows wonderful length and definition. Medium body, pretty cherry and citrus character and a long and subtle finish. Well done for a difficult vintage. Delicious now.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Petrolo ‘Bòggina A’ Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 20 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“It’s interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo’s Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Petrolo Bòggina C Classique Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($59.95) $39 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This is so focused and precise with fantastic depth and beauty. A pure definition of sangiovese. Full-bodied, tight and refined. Yet, full of strength and length. Succulent, too. A single-vineyard wine with soul. Better in 2022.”
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2016 Val d’Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a pure expression of Sangiovese from vines planted in 1952. Give the wine a little time to open in the glass; once it does, it offers a beautiful display of forest fruit, spice, leather and earthy tones. Unlike the Bòggina A that is aged in amphorae, the Bòggina C is fermented in concrete vats using ambient yeasts. It sees extended maceration times and is aged in French 40-hectoliter casks and tonneaux. Some 11,000 bottles were made. This single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese reveals impeccable balance and elegance.-ML”

Case-3 Petrolo Bòggina “Combo Pack” 2014 750ML ($219.95) $119 special, 4 “Combo Packs” in stock now
A case of three 750ml bottles, 2 bottles 2014 Bòggina, 1 bottle 2014 Bòggina Anfora
2014 Petrolo Bòggina:
2014 Petrolo Bòggina Anfora:
Antonio Galloni 93 points “It’s interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo’s Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.”

Petrolo Torrione Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($39.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Petrolo Torrione Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($449.95) $199 special (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
James Suckling 92 points
“A refined and silky rendition of this wine with pretty berry, citrus and light chocolate. Medium body. Chilled and delicious. Drink now.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Pre-Arrivals ETA Fall 2021:

Petrolo ‘Bòggina C’ Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly, the wine seems to benefit from. Dark cherry, licorice, leather, spice and menthol build as the 2018 shows everything its got. Impressive.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “From old-vine (and organic) Sangiovese planted in 1952, the Petrolo 2018 Val d’Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a gorgeous wine with thick flavors and dark saturation. Some 5,053 bottles and larger-format bottles were produced. This is a beautiful expression—polished, bright and intense. It offers pure fruit flavors of wild cherry, cassis, dried basil, crushed flower and candied orange skin. The wine is silky and mid-weight in texture, but it produces a very long and polished finish. This wine hits all the proverbial Sangiovese high notes.”

Petrolo Torrione Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($37.95) $28 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Petrolo Torrione Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($219.95) $159 pre-arrival special (that’s only $26.50/bottle!)
Case-12 Petrolo Torrione Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($419.95) $299 pre-arrival special (that’s only $24.92/bottle!)
James Suckling 95 points
“A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “This is such a fun edition of this wine with a fluttering heart sketched onto the front label. I imagine that the heart could be dedicated to proprietor Luca Sanjust’s rambunctious mother who recently passed away. Made with organic fruit, the Petrolo 2018 Val d’Arno di Sopra Torrione is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine opens to a dark and rich appearance with punchy aromas of tart cherry and wild berry. Warm aromas of tobacco, spice and cedar wood appear gradually as the wine opens in the glass. An ample 50,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums were produced.”

In Stock Now:

Vinyes d’en Gabriel Mans de Samsó, Montsant 2014 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Brilliant intense colour with shades of violet indicating long life, with an intense nose in which the montsant terroir predominates.  Presence of balsamic aromas from pine trees to honeycomb, touches of liquorice, mineral notes, aniseed with hints of fennel, cherry. In the mouth it is seductively moreish, full-bodied and well structured. The retronasal perception is of great aromatic complexity, with mineral notes alongside preserved fruit and fruits of the forest.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri ‘Remelluri’ Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2012 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 23 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“The DNA of Remelluri is here. Wild mountain herb character, structured and firm, these tannins are succulent and deeply expressive. Powerful and assertive red plums, wild cherries and roasting herbs with the oak sitting well. Power and balance. Try from 2021.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94+ points “A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, the 2012 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva represents what they are aiming for with this wine, a classical expression of the place, the quintessence of the vineyards. The select their oldest vineyards and age the wine for a long time, coming back to those early years of a modern Rioja that has now turned into a classic. It has some dusty tannins, with good grip and length. It was bottled in 24,238 bottles after an élevage of 26 months. It has been in bottle since May 2015.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez ‘As Caborcas’ Single Vineyard Ladeiras do Bibei, Valdeorras 2016 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2.5 hectares of north- and west-facing terraces planted with old vines produced the 2016 As Caborcas, a wine of unusual intensity, elegance and balance in 2016. The cooler year seems to have worked wonders for the reds here, and the wine is expressive and open, floral and aromatic, developing nuances of moss and fern, with a textured palate where the tannins have the granite mark of stony austerity that is then coated by the glycerin and the fruit, making a wine that is both elegant and powerful, with a very Galician feeling to it. 2,619 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2017.”
Importer note “As Caborcas is a unique vineyard, full of different varieties, of different ages, from different strains, growing at different altitudes and exposures. Among the native grapes planted are mencía, merenzao, sousón, godello, and brancellao. Indigenous yeasts cause spontaneous fermentation in small wooden barrels of various sizes, with light foudre aging for 12 months to preserve the “Atlantic” delicacy of this wine of inland Galicia. True to the origins, As Caborcas could be made nowhere else. As Caborcas is extremely Límited, with less than 3,000 bottles produced in a good year.”
Importer note on the winery “Ladeiras do Xil takes its name from the hillsides of the Sil River, which is the lifeblood of the region. The pioneering duo of Pablo Eguzkiza (who gained his winemaking chops at Château Pétrus) and his partner Telmo Rodríguez (of Remelluri fame, among many others) started working here in 2002. Recognizing the potential to make world-class wines in this incredibly important valley, they began a project that would take decades to come to fruition. The philosophy of their company has always been vineyard first, winery second. The most crucial piece of the puzzle is the vineyard, and we are now just beginning to see the unfolding of the grandeur of their vision. They have been quietly doing heroic work in the face of incredible obstacles, as the climate in Galicia is unforgiving.”

Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi ‘Cantos del Diablo’, Méntrida 2016 750ML ($119.95) $95 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The 2016 Cantos del Diablo, single vineyard from the village of Real de San Vicente, the one plot that is bottled separately from within the Méntrida zone of Gredos, had notes of pomegranate, blood orange and wild cherries, showing elements of ripeness and restraint. It’s much more mineral, with a chalky sensation on the nose and palate. In fact, it started with a reductive personality, so decanting in advance might not be a bad idea. This cool year is quite pale and sharp, at times closer to a white than a red that is wild in nature and has a sharp palate. This is going to be phenomenal in four or five years. 1,737 bottles and 50 magnums were filled in March 2018.”

Daniel Gómez Jiménez Landi ‘El Reventón’, Cebreros 2016 750ML ($119.95) $95 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The Cebreros vineyard was divided into two sections in 2016.  In fact, there are two different wines bottled, differentiated by a small code on the lower right corner of the labels, RVL and RV, Reventón Ladera (slope) and Reventón proper, the names they have been using in the winery. The 2016 El Reventón RVL corresponds to the slope on the right-hand side, a west-facing plot in a very narrow valley that has more clay and achieves higher ripeness. Grapes there ripen up to 15 days earlier than the ones in the other, cooler plot. This has a more Mediterranean character within the style of the vintage, cool and fresh, with plenty of aromatic herbs and the classical Cebreros character, lavender, thyme, even curry. A more powerful Garnacha from Gredos.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi ‘Cantos del Diablo’, Mentrida 2017 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The single-vineyard 2017 Cantos del Diablo was produced with the grapes from 0.35 hectares in the village of El Real de San Vicente (Toledo), the highest vineyard in the Méntrida appellation. It’s a north-facing plot at 900 meters in altitude that was planted some 70 years ago on sandy granite soils rich in silt and is worked biodynamically. The grapes, with all the stems, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, and the wine matured in a 1,200-liter oak foudre for 12 months. This was one of the few villages from Gredos that escaped the hail and frost, and it was a dry year, so harvesting was early (10 to 15 days earlier compared with a “normal” vintage!). It’s aromatic and floral but has the austerity of the wines from El Real de San Vicente as well as a texture like liquid chalk and very fine, powdery tannins. It’s clean and ripe without excess, with a nice combination of fruit and minerality, really balanced, with intensity and finesse. Excellent 2017! 1,362 bottles were filled in March 2019.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Daniel Gómez Jiménez Landi ‘Las Iruelas’ El Tiemblo, Castilla y León 2016 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 97 points
“As a result of a soil study, the 2016 Las Iruelas comes only from the higher altitude part of the vineyard, a stonier and convex part that deliver more subtle wines with positive intensity, subtleness and detail. It felt a little shy and reticent, with finesse, tons of white pepper, wildflowers, herbs and berries with a depth and clout, which I had not seen in previous years. This can feel a little tight, even reductive at first and decanting it in advance can be a good idea. This character tells me that this wine might behave brilliantly in the bottle and have a long and positive evolution. 2,821 bottles and 50 magnums were filled in February 2018.”

Terroir al Límit Soc. Lda. l’Arbossar, Priorat DOCa 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The old-vine Cariñena 2015 Arbossar has a distinct note of licorice that grows in the glass. By working the vineyard with compost, they have managed to increase yields around 15%, and they feel the grapes achieve better balance, which is very difficult to see in the very poor llicorella slate soils that have almost no organic matter. It’s a north-facing slope planted some 90 years ago, and the grapes are very concentrated, so it’s a challenge to achieve a floral and fresh Cariñena like this, with notes of blue fruit and violets, quite different from the majority of Cariñena from Priorat. It matured in Stockinger oak foudres for 16 months, and like the majority of wines here, it shows perfectly integrated oak, with just faint spices nicely intermixed with the fruit. There is no heat at all; it’s a cool vineyard, and that freshness is translated into the wine and is especially noticeable in a warm and ripe year like 2015. Superb showing for the Arbossar—it has to be one of the best vintages ever. 3,900 bottles were filled in April 2017.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 95 points “Brilliant violet color. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red/blue fruits, Moroccan spices, candied licorice, espresso and smoky minerals, with a sexy floral nuance emerging as the wine stretches out. Appealingly sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated yet lively raspberry liqueur, boysenberry lavender pastille and spicecake flavors that are sharpened by a hint of white pepper on the back half. Harmonious tannins build slowly on a strikingly long, mineral- and floral driven finish that shows outstanding definition and vibrant lift.”

Familia Nin-Ortiz ‘Nit de Nin’ Mas d’en Caçador, Priorat DOCa 2017 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“The 2017 Nit de Nin Mas d’en Caçador is a vintage they talk about like this: “We will remember this vintage as one of the most extreme of the decade, along with that of 2012. It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017.” The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn’t feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It’s tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle. 1,440 bottles were filled in April 2019.”

Bodegas Muga Torre Muga, Rioja DOCa 2016 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“The purity of fruit to this is very, very intriguing with blackberries, graphite, and charcoal. Full-bodied. It radiates intense fruit with perfectly polished tannins. Subtle asphalt and blue fruit. Very long and beautiful. Racy. Tempranillo with graciano and mazuelo. Needs two to four years of bottle age. Try after 2021.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points “I tasted a super young 2016 Torre Muga that had only been in bottle for some four months. But even so, the year seems to be approachable and open. Even if the wine has concentration and power, it has great balance and freshness. And it’s drinkable now, even if it’s going to get polished with some more time in bottle, where it should have a long life. This was the most modern of the wines in the portfolio, but I think the modern and traditional styles have been converging over the years, and nowadays there is not a huge difference between them. And for its age, it feels quite round, and it doesn’t have edges or any harsh tannins; the oak is present but it’s neatly integrated in the wine. It has to be one of the finest vintages for Torre Muga. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in early 2019.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “This bold red is assertive, yet holds power in reserve. A thick texture, supported by muscular tannins, supports ripe flavors of currant, fig, cocoa, loamy earth and tar. Concentrated, but remains harmonious. Impressive, in the modern style. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.”

Featured Pre-Arrival

Le Ragnaie’s Charming Brunello

In a category that has become increasingly judged by power and polish (often at the expense of finesse), producers like Le Ragnaie seem to get overlooked. Fortunately there remains a cohort of stubborn connoisseurs of traditionally made, terroir-driven Sangiovese that appreciate the holdouts.

As is true of most producers making old-school Brunello, Le Ragnaie takes advantage of thoughtfully farmed (in this case certified organic), high elevation vineyards to craft elegant wines that taste less influenced by our changing climate. But the work doesn’t stop in the vineyard; concrete fermentation vessels, long macerations, and large oak botti all contribute to Le Ragnaie’s classically fashioned Brunello. Set to land this spring, Le Ragnaie’s charming Brunello is sure to excite even the most jaded fans of old-school Sangiovese.

Pre-Arrival ETA May:

Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The only new releases from Le Ragnaie fitted with a white label instead of a black one, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is the most accessible and near-term in the portfolio. This is a very elegant and perfumed expression of Sangiovese with lifted floral aromas that recall blue flower and wild rose. Beyond those delicate tones, you get cherry, cassis and other classic aromas linked to Sangiovese. This wine draws on a blend of fruit from various vineyard sites with high and low elevations. Production is 27,700 bottles.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points “The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Le Ragnaie mixes nuances of wild herbs and stone dust with bright notions of strawberry and dried roses. It’s silky and pliant upon entry yet quickly gains tactile depths through salty mineral tones, as floral-laced red berries cascade across the palate. The symmetry here is impeccable, as is its purity of fruit, with fine tannins that result in a structured finale. That said, it should only take a few years of cellaring to bring this fully into focus. Often referred to as the “White Label,” this blends fruit from Le Ragnaie’s vineyards located throughout Montalcino to create a balanced expression of each vintage. It’s a wonderful introduction to the Le Ragnaie style.”
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is perfumed with high-toned aromatics of fresh rosehip, fresh red cherry, and anise. The palate is crisp and energetic with cherry pit, dried red plum, and fresh tomato leaf, with fine-grained tannins with linear acidity. A vibrant wine to enjoy 2023-2033. Le Ragnaie is perched at high elevation just south of the hill of Montalcino and led by the estate owners, Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti.”
James Suckling 94 points “Orange peel scents to the aromas of cherries, mahogany, wet earth and cedar. It’s full-bodied, yet rather tight and reserved with pretty, dusty tannins that are fine-grained. Lots of citrus and red fruit at the end. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2023.”

An “electric Kabinett”
Elektrisch Riesling Kabinett, Germany 2019 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“This gorgeous Rheinhessen sipper is finally back!  “Elektrisch” translates to, yup you guessed it, electric – and that’s how we like our Kabinetts. Which is to say, lighter, more delicate, less sweet and more acid-driven than a lot of the Kabinetts on the market, which are really little more than de-classified Spätlese. The 2019 is, as one might gather from the vintage of which Keller has written, “…one of the best vintages of the last 20 years,” AWESOME. It is electric with vivid and mouth watering granny smith apple and citrus and a live-wire of minerality and acidity nearly pulsating through it. For those of you who like the numbers: the mere 36 grams of residual sugar is easily countered and lifted by 7.4 grams of acidity. This is not only a true Kabinett, it is an “electric Kabinett.””

A classically styled Kabinett
Kruger-Rumpf Münsterer Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett, Nahe 2018 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 89 points “From a southeast-facing vineyard, picked at 83/84° Oechsle around the 20th of September and vinified in stainless steel and large oak in equal parts, the 2018 Münster Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett is beautifully clear, fresh and stony/piquant on the precise, stimulating, slightly nutty and coffee-bean nose. Round, lush and sweet on the first palate, this is a fresh, salty-piquant and elegant Kabinett with stimulating grip on the finish. This is a beautifully lean, light and digestible Kabinett in the good old style. Tasted in July 2019.”
Terry Theise note “Our basic and faithful friend, this perennial and tasty Kabinett from the steep quartzite vineyard, and this ’18 is sleek and rippling and snappy and racy.”

James Suckling 91 points
“If you’ve never tried a dry German estate riesling, then this is the right place to start, because of the very appealing juiciness, generosity and moderate acidity. Good length and great, dining-table flexibility. Drink now. Screw cap.”

“Easily the best Barrel X we have ever tasted”
Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2019 750ML ($24.95) $19.90 special, 15 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 89 points
“The 2019er Riesling Feinherb Barrel X comes half from Estate vineyards and half from purchased fruit, and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar (20 g/l). This bright-colored wine offers a stunning nose of white peach, apple, floral elements, and fine spices. The wine proves remarkably intense on the otherwise superbly lively and engaging palate, and leaves a terrific, mouthwatering feel in the light and elegant finish. The aftertaste is all about presence packed into lemony zest. This is easily the best Barrel X we have ever tasted. What a success! 2021-2029”

Drinking beautifully in its youth
Kruger-Rumpf Münsterer Rheinberg Riesling Kabinett, Nahe 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 13 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 91 points
“I love the interplay of bright summer-fruit aromas and the vibrant, appley and lemony acidity of this sleek young thing. Drink now. Screw cap.”

Organic!
Weingut Dönnhoff Riesling, Nahe 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 23 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 92 points
“A very attractive, just off-dry riesling with tons of fruit-salad character, but no hint of anything banal. Quite the opposite in fact, as this is precisely balanced and has a long, very clean finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink now. Screw cap.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2019 Riesling (Estate) is bright, clear and fresh on the nose, even flinty. Round, pure and lush on the palate, this is a medium-sweet Riesling with great finesse and the typical Mosel lightness and piquancy. Beautifully straight and full of character. Tasted as a sample in Bremen, April 2020.”
John Gilman 90 points “The 2019 Estate Riesling from Weingut Dönnhoff is traditionally finished in a Feinherb style, but I do not have the technical details on the wines this year. The wine offers up a lovely nose of apple, peach, tart orange, a complex base of soil (the vineyards sourced for this wine include volcanic and slate soils), citrus peel and a floral topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, medium-full and complex, with a lovely core, fine mineral drive and grip, a fine girdle of acidity and a long, classy finish. This is really good. 2020-2040.”

Germany’s most underrated varietal is French
Selbach-Oster Pinot Blanc Dry, Mosel 2016 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 22 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht – Vinous 89 points
“This bottling now encompasses some vines in Wehlener Klosterberg (epicenter of Markus Molitor’s memorable Pinot Blancs) as well as those long established by the Selbachs in Zeltinger Himmelreich. It’s raised largely in tank, supplemented by fuder. Apple blossom, corn shoot and smoky hints of toasted nuts combine for a pungent nose, which segues into a palate Pinot Blanc-typical in its delightful combination of textural creaminess and fresh apple juiciness. Due to hail in the parcel of Himmelreich where most of this was grown, the Selbachs ended up picking it in two tranches to compensate for late ripening of secondary buds. The upshot is 12.5% alcohol yet a welcome sense of buoyancy, and a tension of richness and tartness that is pleasantly stimulating on the seriously sustained finish.”
Terry Theise note “This is being used by a restaurant group (with impeccable taste!) and for a while Johannes was worried we’d gobble up the supply and leave the group gasping and flopping on the beach. Nah, I’m only a little greedy. The ’16 is a beauty, toasty and mineral, a super vintage for a wine with some qui behind it. It’s steep-slope grown and made in discreet wood, so you get “recognizable” PB flavor but with the mineral energy of slate. There’s a long finish of really clean shrimp-stock, and the salty mid palate suggests just-caught monkfish.”

“A beauty and a fabulous summer wine”
Weingut Josef Spreitzer Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Kabinett, Rheingau 2018 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 92 points
“This 2018 vintage is a beauty and a fabulous summer wine. One of the oldest family wineries in the Rheingau, Weingut Spreitzer…have really done an amazing job elevating this historic estate.…The Lenchen delivers a lovely concentration of flavors and the Kabinett with expressive fruity character drinks almost as impressively as a Spatlese with a serious palate impact and structure, while still feeling bright and brisk, not cloying or overtly sweet with apricot, apple, pineapple and racy citrus fruits along with touches of gingery spices, lemongrass, lime sorbet, wild mint tea and rosewater. This Kabinett has a sunny personality and makes you smile with comforting yellow fruits, but there is an underlying mineral focus and stoniness that reminds you that this terroir is very special….The vines are littered here with pebbles as well as heavy tertiary, iron-containing clay marl and quartzite that adds complexity to the profile that leans toward exotic in nature. The Spreitzer team used a combination of old fuder (German oak cask) and stainless steel tanks to ferment and age the Lench Kabinett to retain fresh detail as well as give texture, which this vintage manages to convey to near perfection, making for an ideal Kabinett Riesling that is both fun and quaffable along with having complexity to thrill the senses and goes brilliantly with food, classic German dishes and especially spicy Asian cuisines like Thai.”
Terry Theise note “We made it drier, at which point it showed more mid-palate and less elbows-and-knees, becoming a frisky balanced wine with a crisp finish; mirabelles, yellow fruits and lemon-zest, salty and salivating. This wine has come a long way from the simpler and fruitier wine it once was.”

“This is a picture-book Kabinett that is a great pleasure to drink”
Kruger-Rumpf Münsterer Im Pittersberg Riesling Kabinett, Nahe 2018 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points
“While marginally lower in alcohol – at 9% – than its Rheinberg counterpart, this was picked early at a significantly lower 82 Oechsle, so its sense of sweetness is nicely restrained. Luscious and invigoratingly tart-edged white peach, apple and lime are wreathed in honeysuckle, while a billowing sense of levity and inner-mouth perfume perfectly complements a subtly creamy texture that owes something to lees exposure in cask. (In fact, Georg Rumpf performed a bit of lees stirring and an extra racking, yet the wine retains an invigorating hint of CO2 spritz.) The sustained finish delivers a superb sense of vibrancy, clarity and focus, its intense fruitiness matched by a salinity that tugs at the salivary glands. (For background on the origination and style of this Kabinett, consult my reviews of its vintage 2015 and vintage 2016 predecessors.)”
Wine Advocate 91 points “Picked early around September 10th and vinified in large oak until April this year, the 2018 Im Pitterberg Riesling Kabinett offers a clear, ripe and spicy, beautifully elegant bouquet of bright fruits and crushed nuts. Very clear and fresh on the palate, this is a filigreed, elegant and persistently light, salty-piquant and crystalline Riesling with mineral tension and stimulating grip. This is a picture-book Kabinett that is a great pleasure to drink even today and certainly with food. 9% alcohol. Tasted from AP 21 19 in August 2019.”
Terry Theise note “Another forward-into-the-past bottling—in this case Georg wanted to make the kind of Kabinett his father made in the 80s, decidedly on the dry side, not very ripe (this has just 82º Oechsle), gentle and tertiary, and even on the dry side it shows Cox’s orange pippins and balsam and its genial Buddhist repose. Cask fermentations help to highlight the tertiary flavors.”

“This gorgeous fruity-styled wine is dangerously easy to knock down now”
Weingut Carl Loewen Longuicher Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2019 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 1 bottle in stock now
James Suckling 94 points
“Excellent ripeness and structure for Kabinett, but also the lightness and finesse that this category should have. Very long, crisp and mineral finish. Drink or hold.”
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “The 2019er Longuicher Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett is made from grapes harvested at 83° Oechsle on over 100-year-old un-grafted vines situated high up the hill, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (42 g/l). This white-hay colored wine offers a deep and delicately broad nose made of white peach, gooseberry, smoky slate, and residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. It proves superbly balanced on the palate, where gorgeous flavors of succulent white peach, minerals, and fine spices are delivered with Spätlese intensity and presence. The finish is beautifully balanced, vibrating and yet remarkably refined. While this gorgeous fruity-styled wine is dangerously easy to knock down now, it will only really reveal its full beauty in a decade or so. What a great success! 2029-2049”

Penetrating & refreshing
Weingut Willi Haag Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2016 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 23 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht – Vinous
“Penetrating scents of lemon and grapefruit laced with woodruff and wintergreen usher in a palate unusually citric and coolingly herbal when compared with the Willi Haag 2016s from Brauneberg or Veldenz. But given that midpalate citricity, I’m surprised at a finish that proves rather sedate and only modest in length. Still, it offers admirable refreshment and a hint of counterpoint by way of stony impingement.”

Clos Erasmus’ ‘Laurel’

Daphne Glorian, who was born in Switzerland, seems an unlikely figure to be a leading winemaker in Priorat. However, she fell in love with the region, moving there to help revive old vines and she’s now a rock star in the region on the level of Palacios and Barbier. While her flagship Clos Erasmus represents a truly spectacular example of what the region is capableof, she also produces a second wine called Laurel. Quintessentially Priorat, the wine is rich and bold, displaying all of the style and panache of the estate, but at a very approachable price. You will be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying Spanish red, let alone one from such an iconic producer, for under $50.

“A great vintage for this cuvée, the 2017 Laurel checks in as 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon that was all destemmed and brought up in a mix of amphora, barrels, and tank. Beautiful rose petals, flowers, new leather, and graphite notes as well as lots of darker berry and raspberry fruits give way to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, elegant red that does everything right.”
