The Pinnacle of Rioja?

Sierra Cantabria’s Iconic ‘Magico’

There are few truly singular wines in the world and we always jump at the opportunity to offer them. From DRC to the wine in question today (Sierra Cantabria’s “Magico” Rioja), the absolute pinnacle of the wine world thrills in a way that’s completely different from wines that are “merely” great.

Sierra Cantabria’s “Magico” Rioja is a prime example of such a wine—an absolutely stunning bottle of Rioja. Made from El Vardallo, a single 1.8ha vineyard of extremely old, head trained vines, this is a true field blend (as was the style at the beginning of the 20th century) that’s only produced in the very best years. As their importer puts it “vineyards this old simply do not exist in Rioja, and its qualities are myriad.” You feel the prismatic effects of the rare old varieties and the old vines with their deep roots—this is a wine of intense power, mesmerizing complexity and enthralling detail.

We fought for and secured a five bottle allocation of this incredible stuff (a huge quantity of this hyper-rare gem) which arrives this week, each bottle in its own wooden box. James Suckling’s 100 point score was icing on the cake, but this is a wine that any lover of the sublime should be after regardless of rating. So don’t sleep on this offer, because once these five bottles are gone, they’re gone.

Arriving Friday, March 5th:

Only 5 bottles available!
Sierra Cantabria ‘Magico’, Rioja DOCa 2016 750ML ($749.95) $545 pre-arrival special
VinopolNote
“Individual Hinged Wooden Box Package”
James Suckling 100 points “A wine with incredible soul and purity, reflecting the land and history. Blackberries, black olives and hot stone and gun metal. Full and layered with incredibly polished and refined tannins. Old bark and mushrooms. It’s like holding an old and special book. Phenomenal. Drink or hold.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points “Some years ago, they started a number of projects to produce some single-vineyard wines. For one old vineyard that was part of those experiments, in the early days, they selected the Tempranillo and produced it separately. Then in 2010, they started vinifying all the varieties together—red and white, except for the Garnacha. The first vintage to be sold is the 2016 Mágico, a wine that is sold en primeur. They also have vintages 2010 to 2015, which might be sold at a later time. This comes from a vineyard that was planted in the early years of the 20th century. This vineyard is in the village of San Vicente, in a part called El Bardallo, with very shallow soils at some 600 meters in altitude, the last zone to ripen the grapes. This has a profile that combines elegance and power, with the expressive nose of the 2016 vintage, quite elegant and nuanced. This has eight grape varieties, including red and white grapes, somewhat unusual, and the mix seems to provide very good complexity. It has the Eguren signature of new oak, and the Garnacha matured in a 500-liter oak barrel. 2,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019…”

Top Wines from Italy & Napa Restocked

Including Vietti, Produttori & Dominus

Vietti

“Vietti’s 2016 Barolos are stratospheric. I have been following the wines for several years, first as separate lots, then as young wines in barrel. In all of those tastings, the wines were never anything less than mesmerizingly beautiful and full of potential. Now that they are in bottle, that potential has been realized. These are, quite simply, the most monumental wines I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the estate… Kudos to Luca and Elena Currado, along with their longtime cellarmaster, Eugenio Palumbo, for a set of truly epic wines that will define their legacy at Vietti.”  –Antonio Galloni

Re-arriving Friday, March 5th:

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($299.95) $199 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 98 points
“The 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is another stunning wine in this range. The 2016 is the first vintage of the Lazzarito I can remember tasting in which intensely mineral notes accompany the more savory, earthy notes that are so typical of this site. Graphite, sage, dried flowers, crushed rocks, menthol, dried rose petal, mint, licorice and blood orange race out of the glass in a breathtaking, towering Barolo that hits all the right notes from the start to its chiseled, strikingly detailed finish. The 2016 Lazzarito is one of the most classically austere wines in this range. In a word: Magnificent.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “Drawing its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the Vietti 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is built like a pyramid. It is grounded by a thick base of robust fruit and power and soars upward in intensity thanks to its beautifully lifted bouquet. It reveals direct and solid lines with blackberry, plum, spice, tar, licorice, candied orange peel and truffle-infused earth. A second wave of aromas offers dark minerals and ferrous qualities such as iron ore and rust. Baroli from Serralunga d’Alba are often in a category apart thanks to their richness and sheer fruit weight. With extra aeration, Lazzarito delivers mint, balsam herb or Fernet-Branca. Production is 9,293 bottles and 300 magnums. This is the finest, most complete set of wines I have ever tasted from Vietti. Congratulations.”

Produttori Del Barbaresco

Produttori is one of Italy’s most famous producers, and for good reason. They make some of the country’s most consistently high-quality wines at a range of price points, from some of Piedmont’s best values through to their celebrated single cru bottlings. Perhaps no wine better represents Produttori’s value proposition than their Langhe Nebbiolo, which might be the world’s best sub-$30 (let alone sub-$22) Nebbiolo.

Re-arriving Friday, March 5th:

Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2018 750ML ($29.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points
“As a palate teaser before this lovely flight of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco, I am delighted to start off with the delicate and fine 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo. Showing a light ruby color, this wine takes baby steps with hints of wild rose, dried blueberry, crushed limestone and powdered licorice. It sports a fragile, fine texture. If you crave for a basic and absolutely satisfying taste of pure Nebbiolo, look no further.”
Decanter 91 points “This Langhe Nebbiolo is sourced from across the region and on a combination of soil types. It’s fermented in concrete to preserve freshness, before ageing for five months in large oak barrels. It displays ripe, vanilla-scented hedgerow fruits with a fresh, crunchy, sweet cherry aroma. In the mouth it has impressive intensity and plenty of playful acidity. The dark fruit flavours are supported by a supple texture and the nuances of spice are perfumed and exotic. A brilliant wine for early drinking and great quality considering the basic appellation.”

Alois Lageder

“I just love this supremely elegant wine.” – Monica Larner-Wine Advocate

Re-arriving Friday, March 5th:

Alois Lageder ‘Löwengang’ Chardonnay Südtirol – Alto Adige 2016 750ML ($69.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“Opening to creamy aromas of almond butter and poached pear, the 2016 Alto Adige Chardonnay Löwengang is a beautiful and sophisticated interpretation of this versatile grape. The wine opens to a luminous golden color with balanced fruit and spice aromas that are expertly folded together. This vintage is especially bright and polished, especially in terms of mouthfeel. Honey and quince flood the very long and silky finish. Grapes are harvested from vines that range from 22 to 72 years in age. The grapes are fermented in barrique with ambient yeasts and aged on the fine lees in oak for 11 months. I just love this supremely elegant wine.”

Dominus

Dominus has been on a roll. Both the 2015 and 2016 vintages of this landmark wine were some of valley’s best from each respective vintage (and at prices that should make cult-cabs blush). Could the 2017 bottling leave them both in the dust? We think it just might.

Re-arriving Friday, March 5th:

Only 12 bottles available!
Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2017 750ML ($249.95) $199 pre-arrival special
Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2017 375ML ($129.95) $109 special, 1 half-bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni 98+ points
“The 2017 Dominus is one of the truly epic, grand wines of the vintage. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous concentration and sheer power, the 2017 Dominus captures all the personality of this site along with the natural opulence of the year. Inky dark fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice, plum, gravel and a host of dark spice notes infuse the 2017 with seemingly endless layers of nuance. Over the last two years I have tasted several hundred Napa Valley Cabernets, both from barrel and bottle. There is no question that Dominus belongs among the elite in 2017; it is simply a breathtaking wine. Certainly readers looking for a Napa Valley Cabernet to cellar should put Dominus at the top of their lists.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown – Wine Advocate 97+ points “There was about 50% of a normal crop this year for the 2017 Dominus, due to strict selection. Grapes were harvested from September 21 to October 3 and the wine was bottled in June 2019. This year the blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, aged in 40% new French oak barrels. Very deep purple-black in color, it sashays nonchalantly out of the glass with graceful notions of potpourri, forest floor, crushed rocks, Ceylon tea and licorice with a core of black currant cordial, chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and preserved plums plus a waft of garrigue. Full-bodied, the palate has a beautifully impactful, wonderfully quiet intensity of black and blue fruits with loads of floral and spicy sparks, framed by firm yet plush tannins, finishing with long-lasting earthy notes. 2,800 cases were made.”
James Suckling 97 points “Very intense aromas of fruit, yet complex subtlety. Blue fruit, licorice and blackberries with flowers and perfumes. Full-bodied, round and chewy with black tea, currants and hints of leather and incense. Coffee undertones. Extremely long and exciting. Available April 2020. Drink in 2022.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “The grand vin is the 2017 Dominus, which is based on 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, harvested between September 21 and October 3, and aged in 40% new French oak. Chateau Lafite-like notes of blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, cedary tobacco, and gravelly earth all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, has a terrific sense of elegance, lots of tannins, and a great finish. This tight, powerful, concentrated Dominus will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 25 years or more. 2017 doesn’t get much better.”

“Grand Cru” Bottles at Premier Cru Prices

From Henri Gouges & Thibault Liger-Belair

Burgundy’s Nuits-Saint-Georges does not technically have a Grand Cru vineyard to its name, and this fact is a gift to us, and to you. Why? Because the commune’s most revered climat, Les Saint Georges, surely could be (and may be in the not-too-distant future). But without the official recognition, the wines still fly somewhat under the radar, selling for half of what they would (and will) if it were to receive its deserved promotion.

In Stock Now:

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Decanter 95 points
“There will be less Les St-Georges in 2018, as 20% of the vineyard has been replanted – if you’re a fan of this wine, now is the time to stock up. It’s appealingly aromatic and not as dense and brooding as this wine can be, but it’s a stylish, spicy, savoury premier cru red with good focus and a backdrop of blood and iron.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges is showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky berry fruit, licorice, candied peel, nori and rich soil tones, having already almost entirely integrated its framing of new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and nicely layered at the core, with good concentration, fine-grained but firm tannins and a precise, stony finish.”

Thibault Liger-Belair Les Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 92-95 points
“(just 11 barrels produced from two hectares in 2012; vinified with 20% whole clusters and aging in 45% new oak): Good deep red. Slightly reduced aromas of black and red fruits, leather and minerals. Dense and thick, with terrific sappy intensity and complex soil character. At another level of complexity in the way it combines deeply pitched earth tones and high-pitched flowers and minerals. Wonderfully tactile wine with an explosive finish. This was the last to finish its malolactic fermentation, at the end of September. Liger-Belair is one of the leaders of an ongoing effort to have this vineyard elevated to grand cru status, and this wine could make his point.”

Thibault Liger-Belair Les Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($179.95) $138 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Burghound 91-94 points
“Strikingly floral-inflected aromas display lovely purity and freshness on the wild red berry, warm earth-scented nose. There is good richness and excellent intensity to the compact, concentrated and stony medium weight plus flavors that possess a firm core of ripe tannins on the wonderfully long, linear and powerful finish. Like the Clos de Vougeot this is indisputably built-to-age and is definitely going to need at least a decade’s worth of cellaring.”

A Sub-$17 Stunner

Vatan Toro’s Rich & Powerful Tritón

“The Toro region of Spain has been famous for centuries. Its rich, robust Tempranillos are loaded with complexity, in part because of the dramatic temperature swings during the scorching summer days and frigid evenings in the high elevation vineyards. Despite the fame and the obvious appeal to modern day drinkers, like most Spanish regions, the wines still fly under the radar and thus are insane values. –Dr. Owen Bargreen, Washington Wine Blog

“The 2017 Tritón…is a rocking wine that can be drunk today or cellared for 15 years or more.” – Jeb Dunnuck

Case-12 Tritón’ Tinta de Toro, Toro 2017 750ML ($239.95) $179 special (that’s only $14.92/bottle!)
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“Made from 100% Tinta de Toro aged a year in used barrels (and some demi-muids), the 2017 Tritón comes from multiple vineyards and is made in decent amounts. It’s a rich, powerful wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, licorice, crushed rocks, and crushed violets. It’s full-bodied, has impressive depth of fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s a rocking wine that can be drunk today or cellared for 15 years or more.”
James Suckling 91 points “An array of ripe dark-berry and raspberry aromas with biscuity nuances, as well as boysenberries. The palate has a sleek, essence-like feel. Such richness. Open-knit with soft berries. Very long and very ripe. Drink or hold.”

France’s Most Undervalued Classic Region?

Chablis’ Timeless Whites

Chablis is a word that conjures up a lot of different images for a lot of different people. Classically it’s a crisp clean white Burgundy, made from vines that are grown in extremely chalky, limestone soil. Chablis became so popular in the 20th century that its good name was co-opted, most notably by big California jug wine producers. This legacy has left us with our current state; a once famous wine region, still beloved by a modest group of devotees, is now too often overlooked.

Today we’re featuring a number of terrific options that represent everything we love about the region’s wines. So stock up on this perfect springtime white, and (re)discover what makes Chablis so timeless.

In Stock Now:

Jérémy Arnaud Vau de Vey, Chablis Premier Cru 2017 ($59.95) $49 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Winery note
[Translated and edited for clarity] The wines sit on shallow, stony soil and a subsoil dating from the Upper Jurassic, Kimmeridgian. In some places, it is not unusual to see the Marne outcrop. The exposed south-east slope of the vineyard can reach up to 50%, which makes mechanization very difficult. The vines were planted between 1980 and 1985. They are now almost 40 years old, thus considered old vine. To limit erosion, we no longer use a tractor on this plot and leave a permanent grass cover. Harvest is manual. This allows us to sort directly on the plot. In the cellar, the grapes are pressed whole bunch using a pneumatic press with low pressure. The vinification and aging of our wines are carried out in a natural way, i.e. no addition of enzymes, yeasts or bacteria is made. Long aging occurs in stainless steel tanks and barrels (50% of which only 10% is new).”

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Les Lys, Chablis Premier Cru 2005 750ML ($64.95) $52.50 special, 34 bottles in stock now
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 93 points
“Dramatic aromas of blanched almonds, beeswax, honey and preserved lemon introduce the 2005 Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys, a full-bodied, textural wine that’s rich, concentrated and structured, with a tight-knit core, tangy acids and a stony finish. Like Defaix’s other 2005s, it’s very much in its prime and will be well worth seeking out when it reaches the marketplace.”
Grapelive 93 points “Daniel-Etienne Defaix … continues [his family’s] tradition of wine growing, which has been working the vines around Chablis since the 1500s. He manages 26 hectares planted exclusively to Chardonnay, which most all there vines in a selection of Premier Crus. Defaix, a natural minded vigneron whose family is from Avallon, not far from Chablis, he uses largely self-taught methods to craft his wines with ideas passed down and learned from his own experiences. His severe selections of grapes and his long fermentations highlight his deft and gentle touch in the cellar, which shows here in his latest release of Les Lys from the 2005 vintage. [This] is gorgeous Chablis with incredible texture, mineral notes, remarkable lively character from this warm vintage and polished depth. This 2005 gives a subtle floral perfume, hints liquid rock, clarified cream, apple, pear and lemon preserves as well as wet stone (chalk), acacia honey, hazelnut and lingering fleshiness of form. It is a seamless Chardonnay of great class and detail. The Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys comes from a monopole plot known as ‘Clos du Roi’ and the average age of the vines is close to 45 years. [The vines are planted] on a sloping hillsides that has a near perfect southwest exposure allowing warm ripe flavors and richness, while the Kimmeridgian (limestone) soils give fabulous structure, acidity and minerallity. Daniel Defaix ferments 100% de-stemmed grapes in stainless steel tank using 100% natural yeasts at cold temps, which takes close to three weeks, and then the wine is rested almost three years on the lees, again in stainless (only) and goes through natural malos, then racked again back to stainless tanks to aged up to ten years before bottling! The results are amazing and this 2005, which shows the benefits of that regime and the age delivers a great performance in the glass with a sexy layered mouth feel and secondary elements beginning to shine through. The ‘Les Lys’ Premier Cru vineyard, part of the Vaillons, is located on the left bank of the Serein River, overlooking the villages of Chablis and Milly, making for an intriguing terroir, one of the most rare in the series of Premier Crus from Chablis and with a stony personality, but with a softer tone than some of neighboring sites. This Defaix version is wonderfully elegant, especially now.”
Importer Note ““Les Lys” is a tiny five-hectare cru of which Defaix owns three and a half hectares, all in a southeast-facing section called “Clos du Roi”—effectively a monopole of the domaine. Its poor soils of pure Kimmeridgian limestone produce perhaps the most complete and distinctive wine in Defaix’s cellar. Combining some of the power of the “Vaillon” with the chalky intensity of the “Côte de Lechet,” the 2005 “Les Lys” ratchets up the aromatic complexity of the previous two, yet comes across as startlingly pure and harmonious. The almost viscous palate displays the richness of the vintage, yet with shimmering tension and muscular strictness rather than opulence. There’s an enormous sensation of dry extract on the chiseled finish, where acidity and minerality interlock like two sides of a zipper. Once again, one gets the impression that this wine is just entering its early maturity, and if the 1971 Danny blind-tasted us on during our last visit is any indication, this 2005 will reveal mind-bending complexity and as-yet-unplumbed layers over the next several decades.”

William Fèvre Beauroy, Chablis Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“The 2017 Chablis Beauroy 1er Cru is beautifully lifted and nuanced. Floral and citrus notes give the Beauroy striking lift as well as nuance. Readers will find a gracious, super-expressive Chablis that drinks well now and also has the potential to develop nicely in bottle.”

William Fèvre Chablis, Burgundy 2016 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Burghound 90 points
“A ripe and fresh nose offers up notes of iodine, oyster shell, mineral reduction, pear and plenty of citrus influence. There is fine density to the concentrated and sappy flavors that possess fine volume while delivering very good length and solid depth. Good stuff and worth a look.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Le Domaine d’Henri L’Homme Mort Vieilles Vignes, Chablis Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($59.95) $47.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Planted in 1970, this parcel reflects the nobility of the Fourchaume appellation, with notes of forest floor and a racy, balanced palate, underlined by a good acidity. The Kimmeridgian escarpment of Fourchaume is reputed to produce some of the best Chablis wines and the South West exposure of the vines means that they bask in the warm afternoon sun. Vinified in stainless steel tanks (75%) to preserve the minerality and freshness, and in oak barrels (25%) of 228-litres so as to add more complex notes, this wine will continue to improve for the next 15 years or so. Serve at 14-15°C, this wine will benefit from being decanted 15 minutes before serving to allow the aromas to develop.  The perfect partner for turbot or a grilled côte de veau.”

Domaine Servin Mont de Milieu, Chablis Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($79.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2018 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is a regal, classy wine that brings together all the best qualities of the vintage. Soft, open-knit and inviting, the 2018 is a real pleasure to taste. This is an especially seamless, racy Chablis that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Apricot, white flowers, mint and citrus confit shape the finish. This is a bit tight today, but very promising.”

Domaine Vocoret et Fils Les Forêts VV, Chablis Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($49.95) $36 special, 17 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote
“This is a richer, more powerful version of Foret, sourced from an old vine-parcel of particular note. Like all of the other Premier and Grand Cru wines from Vocoret, this is fermented and aged in wood, though it sees a touch more new oak than the “regular” Foret bottling.  A stunner, especially in 2017.”

Pre-Phylloxera Vines

From Sicily’s Feudo Montoni & Terre Nere

Vines that predate the arrival of Phylloxera in Europe are rare and coveted. Many experts believe that the wines that they produce offer layers of complexity that grafted vines are unable to rival. But there is far from a consensus on this point. What is less controversial is the sense that pre-phylloxera vines possess a purity and soul that enhances the tasting experience. See for yourself what makes these wines so enchanting.

In Stock Now:

Feudo Montoni ‘Vrucara’ Nero d’Avola Sicilia IGT, Sicily 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Tasted from magnum, the 2015 Sicilia Nero d’Avola Vrucara is a dark and penetrating wine with a chiseled and pungent side that delivers dried cherry and blackberry preserves. There is a point of ripeness, maybe even jammy cherry with lots of inky dark fruit. I knocked off a point or two compared to the previous edition because I am less a fan of that ripeness. You get cherry liqueur or cherry syrup sweetness on the close. However, this remains one of the benchmark bottles for Sicily’s banner grape Nero d’Avola.”
Ian D’Agata-Vinous 93+ points “Good full ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of red/dark berries, plum, smoke, coriander and herbs. Juicy, taut and precise, with musky notes that extend onto the long, very smooth back end.”

Terre Nere Prephylloxera Etna Rosso 2017 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“A graceful, medium-bodied version, with silky tannins and a pleasing juiciness to the array of plumped cherry, stemmy herb and tangy mineral flavors, accented by fragrant graphite, sandalwood and ground pink pepper notes. Finely knit and focused, with the tannins firming up on the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2032. 400 cases made, 300 cases imported.”
Ian D’Agata-Vinous 93+ points “Bright red. Pungent flinty and floral nuances to the red cherry and raspberry jam aromas on the inviting nose. Enters rich, dense and almost sweet, with very precise sweet spice and red fruit flavors lingering nicely. An underlying green note remains in the background and adds complexity. Finishes with noteworthy but balanced tannic bite and plenty of freshness on the long juicy finish. A very complex wine with a beautiful nose; the tannins though are on the tough side as in many of these Terre Nere 2017 reds. A very good wine of noteworthy promise, my suggestion is to cellar this for another 4-6 years for full enjoyment

Pierre Gelin’s World-Class Burgundy

Based in the small village of Fixin, Domaine Pierre Gelin occupies a unique niche. Third generation winemaker Pierre-Emmanuel makes world-class Burgundy; however prices haven’t kept up with most of Gelin’s peers, especially those based in nearby Gevrey-Chambertin. This fact mystifies anyone who has tasted Gelin’s wines, as they more than hold their own when tasted blind against most of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most notable producers.

Scanning our selection, the Clos de Bèze will understandably be the most eye-catching; it is after all one of Burgundy’s most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards. However, don’t sleep of Gelin’s premier Cru bottlings, including monopole Clos Napoleon. They over-deliver -not something we’ve come to expect from Burgundy in recent years.

The only downside is that our allocations were extremely limited, with only few bottles remaining of many of the wines. So look below for your favorite recent vintages and discover what insiders in-and-around Gevrey-Chambertin already know: Gelin is a name worth knowing.

“Here the nose also displays a hint of crushed herb to the wild red berry fruit and earth aromas. There is excellent energy and detail to the supple and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that conclude in a moderately austere, focused and well-balanced finish. This is really quite pretty if a bit edgy and I would suggest allowing this to age for a few years before cracking a bottle.”

“A more deeply pitched and slightly riper nose reflects intensely earthy and sauvage aromas of underbrush and dark currant. There is good richness to the round yet attractively detailed medium weight flavors that possess plenty of minerality that adds a touch of lift to the more powerful and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This well-balanced effort should also drink well young if desired.”
Wine Spectator 89 points “Graphite, sandalwood, strawberry and spice flavors highlight this delicate red. Harmonious, featuring a combination of fragrance and intensity, with a lingering finish. Best from 2016 through 2022. 156 cases imported.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Clos de Meixvelle, Gevrey-Chambertin 2010 750ML ($119.95) $89 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 89 points
“A supple, expressive red, with aromas of cherry, licorice and cinnamon. On the chewy side, featuring dense tannins and a gripping, spicy finish. Best from 2016 through 2029. 250 cases imported.”
Burghound 89 points “Outstanding. This is a bit more deeply pitched than the Clos Napoléon with a lovely mix of both red and dark pinot fruit scents where the earth character is different as well as it’s slightly less pungent and it’s less iron-infused as well. There is good freshness and verve to the ultra-refined medium weight flavors and the tannins are incredibly fine grained, particularly for a villages level wine. A Gevrey of finesse and refinement.”

“Rich, displaying candied cherry, currant, earth and spice flavors. This stays fresh and balanced on the long finish, with well-integrated tannins. Best from 2016 through 2028. 156 cases imported.”
Burghound 89 points “Outstanding. A notably ripe and intensely earthy nose of assorted dark berries, humus and game nuances is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The very generous and equally ripe middle weight flavors are very Gevrey in character with a robust finale that displays only a trace of austerity. This well-balanced effort should reward up to a decade of cellaring. Very solid quality here and worth your consideration.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Clos de Meixvelle, Gevrey-Chambertin 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 89 points
“This is sleek and crisp, offering cherry, black currant and spice flavors, filling out midpalate and finishing in a more compact earth-and-spice frame. Best from 2017 through 2024. 156 cases imported.”
Burghound 89 points “Outstanding. A pungently earthy and gently wooded nose is composed by equally fresh red currant, plum, earth and herbal tea notes. The supple, round and pure medium-bodied flavors possess very fine complexity along with the typical Gevrey sauvage character on the refreshing and inviting finale. This vibrant and balanced effort is a quality Gevrey villages and worth your interest.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Clos de Meixvelle, Gevrey-Chambertin 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 89 points
“Marked by a distinctive licorice aroma, this dense, sinewy red offers tannins that wrap around the cherry pie, spice and menthol flavors. Finishes on the burly side. Best from 2019 through 2028. 245 cases imported.”
“The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin Clos de Meixvelle is a monopole located in the middle of the village (the walled vineyard next to the Les Deux Chevres hotel for those that go there). It is a flat vineyard with clayey soil and stone deposits, and this vintage was destemmed. It has a tightly wound blackberry and briary-scented nose, broody at first but opening with time. The palate is smooth on the entry with quite fine tannin. This is well balanced with nicely integrated oak, sappy black fruit and iodine towards the easy going, gentle, flavorsome finish.” –Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

“Round and rich, featuring black cherry, black currant and spice flavors. A graphite note creeps in as this matches its supple texture with a firm structure. Nice length. Best from 2013 through 2024. 40 cases imported.”
Burghound 90 points “A restrained, airy and cool nose mixes a variety of red berry fruit aromas with stone, earth and a hint of spice. As it almost always is, this is really quite refined and this impression is accentuated by the fine-grain of the tannins on the moderately austere, persistent and complex finish. As with several of the wines in the range, there is just a mild hint of youthful asperity but because there is a good level of dry extract this should reasonably age out.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Clos Prieur, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 91 points
“Shows plenty of cherry and pomegranate flavors, along with a racy structure that defines the berry, spice and mineral notes. Stays firm on the finish but should settle down with time. 40 cases imported.”
Burghound 90 points “Noticeable wood frames the more deeply pitched dark currant, spice and once again pungently earthy nose. The supple medium-bodied flavors possess a more refined mouth feel thanks to the relatively fine grain of the supporting tannins, all wrapped in a contrasting finish that is borderline robust. This will need a few years to fully harmonize.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Clos Prieur, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 4 bottles in stock now

“This tightly wound version delivers black cherry, blackberry, violet and light underbrush flavors. Though compact, this is concentrated and firmly structured, with a long finish. Best from 2020 through 2033. 50 cases imported.”
Burghound 91 points “Outstanding. Reduction presently mars the nose so be sure to decant this if you’re going to open a bottle soon. By contrast there is good energy and volume to the subtly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess a beguiling mouth feel, all wrapped in a lingering and well-balanced finale where a hint of wood appears. This should drink reasonably well young if desired but reward up to a decade of cellaring.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2010 750ML ($299.95) $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Round and fleshy, with intense cherry, raspberry, wild berry, earth and spice flavors. Succulent and persistent, showing great balance and well-integrated tannins, delivering an aftertaste of cherry and spice. Best from 2017 through 2035. 40 cases imported.”
Burghound 93 points “Not surprisingly this is completely different from any of the foregoing wines with its strikingly spicy aromas of fresh and pure wild red berries, warm earth, wet stone and a hint of humus. There is good richness and excellent intensity to the detailed and mineral-inflected medium weight plus flavors that possess good phenolic maturity and a firm core of ripe tannins on the strikingly long finish. By the standards of the appellation this is not a particularly big or robust Bèze but the balance is impeccable and the harmony among structural elements is really lovely.”

“Though packed with cherry and black currant fruit, this red is impenetrable and cloaked in spicy oak. With air, the mineral core emerges and builds to a long finish. In time, all the elements will come together. Best from 2024 through 2042. 55 cases imported.”

Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2002 1.5L ($499.95) $399 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Burghound 90-93 points
“Subtly spicy and rather reserved aromatically, revealing wondrously complex earthy red fruit aromas and medium weight, moderately structured yet remarkably powerful, muscular flavors of outstanding depth with an explosive finish that lasts and lasts. In particular, the balance is absolutely impeccable and 2002 is perhaps the most impressive cask sample of this wine I have ever tasted chez Gelin. In short, this wine has the “wow” factor and given the price that it sells for relative to the alternatives, definitely one to buy.”
