“Fine bubbles combine nicely with the cooked apples, pie crust and lemon rind. Some biscuit, too. Full body. Layered and creamy with a crisp finish. Always delicious. Drink now.” [Reviewed July 2019]

Consistently one of Champagne’s greatest entry level wines
Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve, Champagne NV 750ML ($59.95) $44.50 special
Case-6 Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve, Champagne NV 750ML ($359.95) $259 special (that’s only $43.17/bottle!)
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 92+ points
“Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of Charles Heidsieck’s NV Brut Réserve was disgorged earlier this year. It’s showing very well, opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions, displaying good concentration and underlying richness. This is a bottling that continues to punch above its weight and which both merits and rewards a few years in the cellar before opening.”

Arriving ETA October:

A classy rosé from one of Champagne’s avant-garde estates
Champagne Aubry ‘Sable’ Premier Cru Brut Rose, Champagne 2014 750ML ($119.95) Was $89, Now $79 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Case-6 Champagne Aubry ‘Sable’ Premier Cru Brut Rose, Champagne 2014 750ML ($599.95) $449 pre-arrival special (that’s only $74.83/bottle!), ETA October 30th
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2014 Rosé Sablé Nicolas Francois Aubry is a real pleasure to taste. It is also much more giving than the 2013 at this stage. Crushed flowers, cranberry and chalk all flesh out in a Rosé that offers terrific depth as well as energy. It is another classy, polished Champagne from the Aubry brothers.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points “Disgorged in October 2018, Aubry’s 2014 Brut Nature Rosé Sablé Premier Cru is showing very well, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of oatmeal, fresh peach, woodsmoke, orange oil and dried linden blossom. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, vinous and crisply textural, with racy acids, a delicate low-pressure mousse and a long, penetrating finish. While I found the 2013 rendition—reviewed last year—a little austere, the more generous 2014 vintage is more naturally giving and inviting in the wine’s chiseled, bone-dry register. A saignée of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier gives the wine its color and amounts to some 30% of the unusual blend, complemented by fully 20% Arbanne and 25% Petit Meslier, the balance coming from Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.”

An unusual field blend that dazzles
Champagne Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Sable Blanc de Blancs Campanae Veteres Vites Brut, Champagne 2013 750ML ($99.95) Was $79, Now $69, 5 bottles in stock now
Case-6 Champagne Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Sable Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne 2013 750ML ($489.95) $389 pre-arrival special (that’s only $64.83/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2013 Blanc des Blancs Sablé Le Nombre d’Or Sable is a Champagne of extraordinary precision and class. Bright, lifted and wonderfully nuanced, the 2013 toes the line between Champagne and wine because of the low pressure Aubry uses in bottling this cuvée. In a word: dazzling.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points “Disgorged in April 2019, Aubry’s 2013 Brut Nature Sablé Blanc de Blancs Le Nombre d’Or Campaniae Veteres Vites is showing well, opening in the glass with scents of grapefruit oil, white flowers, crisp green apple and rock salt. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, vinous and elegantly textural, with terrific tension at the minimalist but multidimensional core, ripe but racy acids and a mineral finish. As usual, this represents an unusual field blend of 25% Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, 25% Petit Meslier, 20% Arbanne, 20% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

A fantastic NV from one of Champagne’s most forward thinking houses
Drappier Carte d’Or Brut Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) $36 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Drappier Carte d’Or Brut Champagne NV 750ML ($299.95) $199 pre-arrival special (that’s only $33.17/bottle!)
Wine Spectator 92 points
“[Reviewed Nov 2017] This bright and zesty Champagne is lightly juicy and appealing, offering flavors of Honeycrisp apple, ripe white cherry, biscuit and pickled ginger. Balanced and lacy in texture, with a lingering, spiced finish. Drink now through 2022. 2,200 cases imported.”
Decanter 91 points “[Reviewed Oct 2019] Described by Drappier as ‘almost a blanc de noirs’, this Pinot Noir-dominant wine sourced from the Côte des Bar is the house’s calling card. 5% of the cuvée is matured in barrels for a year for added complexity and texture, and it’s bottled unfiltered with a fairly low dosage of 7g/l. There are some melon and apple scents on the nose along with a splash of red fruits, while the palate is intense, with notes of apple, quince and grape wrapped in a red-fruit veil. It’s full-bodied and long, with a lovely texture from the red wine tannins and oak-matured portion.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points “[Reviewed Apr 2020] Disgorged in June 2019, the latest rendition of Drappier’s NV Brut Carte d’Or is showing well, bursting with pretty aromas of peach, honeyed orchard fruit and white flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, chalky and incisive, with fine depth and tension and a penetrating finish.”

Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($69.95) $52.50 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($399.95) $299 pre-arrival special (that’s only $49.83/bottle!)
2016-base.
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points
“Disgorged in June 2019, the latest rendition of Péters’ NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve offers up a lovely bouquet of citrus oil, pear, pastry cream, dried white flowers, hazelnuts and crushed chalk. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant, with ripe but racy acids, a delicate pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. As usual, this is an immensely refined Champagne that exemplifies the timeless style of this Mesnil-based Chardonnay specialist.”
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The NV Cuvée de Réserve (base 2016) is absolutely delicious and also shows the greater natural harmony of 2016 vis-à-vis 2015. Creamy and open-knit, the 2016 will be easy to drink pretty much upon release, as it is a Champagne of absolutely exquisite balance. White orchard fruit, crushed rocks, flowers and mint all grace this sublime, wonderfully nuanced Champagne from Rodolphe Péters. Dosage is 6 grams per liter.”

Case-12 Bereche et Fils Brut Reserve, Champagne NV 750ML ($679.95) $489 pre-arrival special (that’s only $40.75/bottle!)

Review for L17 provided for reference.
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points “The latest release of the NV Brut Réserve was disgorged in October 2019 with seven grams per liter dosage, and it’s based on the 2017 vintage. Exhibiting a glass bouquet of citrus oil, oyster shell, fresh peach and toasted nuts, it’s medium to full-bodied, racy and tensile, with lovely depth and concentration, fine energy and a long, penetrating finish.”
Peter Liem note “The range begins with the Brut Réserve, a non-vintage brut that usually contains about 25 percent chardonnay, 25 percent meunier and 20 percent pinot noir from the base vintage, along with 30 percent of reserve wines, also from the three varieties.”
“I often find myself reaching for the NV Brut Réserve, which is reliably one of the very finest Champagnes in its peer group” –Antonio Galloni, writing on the previous disgorgement
Base vintage subject to change by the importer without notice.

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

“Despite building up an impressive track record for producing finely detailed, graceful Pinots over the last decade, Crowley’s Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are still under the Oregon radar. Even in warm and hot years, I’ve consistently impressed by their light touch, blend of depth and energy and ability to age gracefully.” – Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Crowley Four Winds Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($49.95) $45 special
Winery note
“The 2018 is dark and leads with alluring graphite and light oak that gives way to rich blackberry and anise on the nose. Four Winds’ rocky soils also express wet stone and mineral to keep the aromatics lighter and lifted. 2018 delivers a richer than normal flavor profile, a result of a dry summer. The mouth is succulent, broad, and full. Sweet strawberry, clove, sage, and vanilla mix it up as does a trace of new wood. The structure is soft and delicate as is typical of the more feminine Four Winds. The length is excellent and the old vine Pommard is supremely balanced and composed.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Crowley La Colina Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($49.95) $45 special
Winery note
“The 2018 La Colina is bold and beautiful. Harvested in cool late September, it’s mature and vigorous with the added power of a dry summer growing season that certainly left its mark. Dark ruby is the color with traces of blue on the edges. The nose is tobacco and mushroom and ripe raspberry. Signature La Colina tropical notes mix with ash and forest floor to create a captivating experience. Great rigid structure combines with fresh acidity and dark sweet fruit to get the wine moving on the palate while dark cherry, coffee, anise, and wintergreen all make a graceful appearance to keeps this wine mysterious. The angular mouthfeel with supple tannin provides lift and the finish is gorgeous and long.”

France – Beaujolais

Pauline Passot took advantage of her family’s long history growing grapes in Chiroubles to found a small winery in 2016. Their parcels are ancient, with nothing younger than 40 years-old and some vines are 70, 90, or even 100 years old. With such quality material, she crafts classically-styled Beaujolais. Of course in Burgundy proper, the juice of similarly ancient Pinot Noir vines would set you back $100-$500/bottle. Fortunately, some fool in the 14th century decreed the grape as ‘disloyal’ and 600 years later, Passot’s gems are under $25/bottle. This is a producer to watch.

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles ‘La Grosse Pierre,’ Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points
“I underestimated the 2018 Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre when I tasted it not long after it had been bottled, and six months later, it’s performing very well. Mingling aromas of black cherries and blackberries with hints of cracked pepper and herbs, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and elegantly fleshy, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a seamless profile.”
VinopolNote: From 45 year old vines.

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles Aux Craz, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“Offering up aromas of ripe cherries and raspberries as well as hints of rose petal and peony, the 2018 Chiroubles Aux Craz is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, its deep core of succulent fruit framed by satiny tannins. This bottling derives from 70-year-old vines in the domaine’s highest-altitude holdings in lieu-dit Grosse Pierre.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Chiroubles ‘Claudius,’ Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“Bursting with aromas of cherries, blackberries, licorice and violets, the 2018 Chiroubles Claudius is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a muscular chassis of powdery tannin largely concealed by a rich core of fruit. This is a terrific Chiroubles with the stuffing (and a high-quality Trescases cork) to evolve with grace in the cellar.”
VinopolNote: From 90-100 year old vines.

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre Morgon Douby, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries, violets, licorice and cracked pepper, the 2018 Morgon Douby is medium to full-bodied, velvety and succulent, with a fleshy core of fruit underpinned by powdery tannins that mark this out as one of Passot’s more structured wines this year.”
VinopolNote: From 70 year old vines.

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Domaine de La Grosse Pierre Fleurie Bel Air, Beaujolais 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points
“Bursting from the glass with inviting aromas of cherries, berries and plums, the 2018 Fleurie Bel-Air is showing even better than when I reviewed it last year. Medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, it’s elegantly fleshy, built around lively acids and melting tannins. Seamless and impeccably balanced, this is an immensely drinkable young Beaujolais.”
VinopolNote: From 50 year old vines.

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Grower Champagne Spotlight

Vilmart & Chartogne-Taillet

Vilmart

Vilmart is perhaps the most grand grower Champagne we sell—offering the region’s most powerful, intense expression of their terroir. The Krug comparison is almost always bandied about, but although we love both Krug and Vilmart (and totally see the parallels), we think that it sells Vilmart a bit short.

These are wines that are vinified to be both lithe and powerful—a sinewy bolt to the palate of intense Champagne terroir. They age beautifully, holding onto their acidity and freshness, and developing an almond-creamy brioche quality that’s so prized. We recommend holding onto all of the wines— down to the “basic” NV—for at least a few years and are excited to offer them again.

In Stock Now:

Vilmart & Cie Les Blanches Voies Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2009 750ML ($419.95) $349 special, 1 bottle in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 97 points
“A new lieu-dit cuvée for Vilmart—derived from 60-year-old vines and vinified in barrel for 10 months—debuts with the 2009 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies, a wine that was disgorged in March 2017 with four grams per liter dosage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp yellow pear, beeswax, white flowers, walnuts and brioche, it’s deep, full-bodied and searingly intense, with chalky structuring extract and an incisive spine of acidity. Long and penetrating, this has turned out brilliantly.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “Here in its first release, the 2009 Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies is positively stellar. Old vines confer remarkable power, gravitas and explosive energy, and yet the 2009 preserves remarkable freshness to play off the resonant, deeply layered fruit. Intense graphite, mineral, citrus and floral notes add myriad shades of nuance to an expansive, powerful Blanc de Blancs that hits all the right notes. The purity and vibrancy of the flavors here is simply striking. The Blanches Voies gets one more year on the lees than the flagship Coeur de Cuvée and also a dosage of just 4 grams per liter, the lowest ever in the history of Vilmart. The 2009 is positively stellar. Don’t miss it! Production is just 2,400 bottles. Disgorged March 17.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2009 Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies is every bit as stunning as it was last year. The combination of the warm year and the natural richness conferred by these 70+- year-old vines yields a powerful, vinous Champagne with tremendous character, depth and the pedigree to drink well for many years. Laurent Champs gave the Blanc de Blancs 7 years on the cork, as opposed to the 6 that are customary for the Coeur de Cuvée. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2017.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Ripe and juicy white cherry and raspberry fruit flavors are layered with fragrant accents of exotic spice, lime blossom and grilled nut in this rich, harmonious Champagne, which is round and expressive, and satiny in texture, with a bright backbone of lemony acidity providing fresh definition through to the lasting finish. Disgorged March 2017. Drink now through 2035.”
Terry Theise note  “Way back in the day, VIlmart made a BdB and it was excellent. I missed it when it was discontinued, but this new and spectacular wine more than makes up for it. Deg 3/2017, and drier than the rest of the range, it has great richness (pheasant stock, applewood smoke) and a tangelo-citrus lift, a pixilated chalky-dusty minerality, all conspire in a rumble of interplay that stops you cold and leaves you warm. Entirely original, and a new vibrancy of mineral for Vilmart.”

Pre-Arrivals ETA October 23rd:

Vilmart & Cie ‘Coeur de Cuvee’ Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2011 750ML ($159.95) $119 pre-arrival special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Disgorged in May 2018 with seven grams per liter dosage, Vilmart’s new 2011 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is showing beautifully, offering up an expressive bouquet of crisp green pear, yellow apple, dried white flowers, English walnuts and spices. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and nicely concentrated, it’s a fine-boned, precise rendition of this cuvée, built around ripe but racy acids and complemented by a pinpoint mousse. Vilmart is the sort of grower that succeeds in vintages such as 2011, and this wine met my expectations.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Coeur de Cuvée is gorgeous, especially within the context of the year. Translucent and airy, the 2011 is a Champagne of real elegance. Sage, mint, dried flowers, orchard fruit and lemon peel all grace this super-expressive and pretty Champagne. These 60-year-old vines handled the challenges of 2011 well. Harvest took place in August, which after 2003 and 2007, is not as freakishly unusual as it would have been a generation ago. The 2011 is undoubtedly terrific. Even so, I would not push my luck on aging given the inherent fragility of the year. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($89.95) $59 pre-arrival special
2015 base
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The NV Cuvée Grand Cellier (base 2015) is striking. Hints of lemon peel, crushed rocks and mint are framed by a kiss of new oak, with a hint of reduction that adds a further note of complexity. The Grand Cellier is based on 2015, with 25% 2014 and 25% 2013 reserve wines, aged exclusively in foudre. It is another stellar wine in the entry-level portion of the Vilmart range. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Pre-Arrivals ETA November:

Vilmart & Cie Les Blanches Voies Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2011 750ML ($419.95) $369 pre-arrival special

Vilmart & Cie ‘Cuvee Rubis’ Brut Rosé, Champagne NV 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Lovely aromas of lilac and star anise waft from the glass of this graceful rosé Champagne, but there’s a pleasing tautness imparted by the backbone of fresh acidity, well-meshed with flavors of ripe and fleshy white cherry and apricot fruit, pink grapefruit sorbet and pickled ginger. Fine, satiny finish. Disgorged June 2019. Drink now through 2025.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points “Generous and expressive, the latest rendition of Vilmart’s NV Brut Premier Cru Cuvée Rubis is showing very well, bursting with aromas of red berries, plums, blood orange and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a sapid core of fruit, a pillowy mousse and a lively, delicately phenolic finish, it’s already drinking well. This is based on the 2017 vintage, with reserve wines from the 2016 and 2015 vintages, and it was disgorged with nine grams per liter dosage.”

Vilmart & Cie ‘Emotion’ Premier Cru Rosé, Champagne 2012 750ML ($199.95) $179 pre-arrival special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Disgorged in January 2018, Vilmart’s new 2012 Brut Emotion is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange oil, red berries, yellow plums and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it’s racy and incisive, with chalky structuring extract and a pillowy mousse, concluding with a penetrating finish. It’s a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 45-year-old vines, vinified in barrels for 10 months without malolactic fermentation.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier d’Or Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2013 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2013 Grand Cellier d’Or soars out of the glass with majestic intensity. Rich, concentrated and somehow also light on its feet, the 2013 is sublime. I could describe the aromas, flavors and textures, but, really, more than anything else, the 2013 is flat-out delicious. The level of detail and precision here is simply tremendous. Disgorged: July, 2017.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points “The July 2017 disgorgement of Vilmart’s 2013 Premier Cru Grand Cellier d’Or is showing brilliantly, bursting with scents of lime, citrus oil, freshly baked bread, crisp green apples and white flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and incisive, with an elegantly textural attack, a beautifully pure core of fruit, tangy acids and a nicely defined finish. While it’s still a young wine, just beginning its drinking window, its quality is already apparent.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “With an intense spine of rapierlike acidity, this sleek Champagne is fleshed out by rich, up-front spice, lime blossom and minerally oyster shell accents and dried white cherry and candied kumquat flavors set on the creamy mousse. Drink now through 2028. 400 cases imported.”
Disgorgment date may vary.

Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier d’Or Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2014 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2014 Brut Grand Cellier d’Or is one of the best vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. Bright, explosive and full of energy, the 2014 captures a striking balance of depth and vibrancy. All the elements meld together in a beautifully sculpted Champagne loaded with character. The 2014 is even more impressive today than it was when I tasted it earlier in the year. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Aromatic, with floral and ripe berry and cherry fruit notes, this harmonious Champagne shows a zesty underpinning and a creamy mousse. Fresh and mouthwatering throughout, showing hints of chopped almond, Meyer lemon peel and pastry dough. Offers a lingering finish loaded with fragrant spice and graphite accents. Disgorged June 2018. Drink now through 2029. 400 cases imported.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Disgorged in June 2018, the 2014 Brut Premier Cru Grand Cellier d’Or is an attractive rendition of this wine, which derives from south-facing lieu-dit Les Blanches Voies. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp white peach, citrus oil, toasted bread and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, taut and precise, with a chiseled core of ripe but racy fruit, lively acids and a lingering finish. This will unwind beautifully with a bit of bottle age.”

Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier d’Or Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“Disgorged in June 2019 with seven grams per liter dosage, the 2015 Brut Premier Cru Grand Cellier d’Or reveals inviting aromas of golden orchard fruit, pear, freshly baked bread and citrus zest. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with racy acids, chalky extract and a long, penetrating finish, the vintage has imparted additional generosity, but the house’s chiseled, serious style remains very much intact.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Chartogne-Taillet

“Lovers of grower champagne are familiar with Chartogne-Taillet’s Les Barres, the single parcel, un-grafted Meunier wine, released first in the 2006 vintage. This was the first wine that Alexandre produced after returning home to his family domaine, from working with Anselme Selosse, his mentor. Over a short period of time, Les Barres has become a cult wine and we have very small amounts to offer each year. The vineyard Les Barres and the wine Alexandre produces from it has been linked to a single grape variety – Meunier. Alexandre feels that the variety is simply the conduit, a transmission of place and identity. He feels that while it’s not irrelevant ‘Each place itself confers a different texture, a feeling in the mouth, which doesn’t change, even as the aromas and structure shifts with ageing.’… Alexandre showed us a new wine from Les Barres: ‘In the parcel Les Barres there are not just Meunier vines, but also a small amount of Pinot Noir.  The Pinot would not be enough to make a single harvest wine, so, I produced this wine from the vintages 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. It is Les Barres Pinot Noir, and the first time I have made it.’  The wine is exquisite, with remarkable length and depth, even in its youth. For fans of Les Barres, this is an incredible opportunity to taste other expressions of this outstanding site.  It’s a wine, which, like Les Barres Meunier, has a long life ahead of it.” – Importer note

Pre-Arrival ETA Friday, October 9th:

Chartogne-Taillet Les Barres Extra Brut, Champagne (15) NV 750ML ($149.95) $99 pre-arrival special
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“From a climat Chartonge made famous for its Pinot Meunier growing in chalky soils, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Barres (Pinot Noir) derives from a westerly exposed parcel of Pinot Noir growing in sand—and hails entirely from the 2015 vintage. It’s showing very well, exhibiting attractive aromas of mirabelle plums, raspberries, anise, pastry cream and yellow chartreuse. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and muscular, with tangy acids, excellent concentration and a long, chalky finish.”
Importer note “We are very excited to announce the release of a new parcellaire wine from Alexandre Chartogne. Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Sainte Anne Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($51.95) $44 pre-arrival special
Importer note
“60% 2017 base, 40% from 2016 & 2015.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points “{Review for prior disgorgement.] The latest release of the NV Brut Sainte Anne is a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, based on the 2015 vintage, and it was disgorged in April 2018. This iteration of Chartogne’s entry cuvée is especially charming, wafting from the glass with notes of waxy lemon rind, almond paste, elderflowers and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a generous core of tangy fruit, ripe acids, a refined mousse and a long, flavorful finish. Despite its charm, this is also among the more intense, concentrated renditions of Sainte Anne that I can remember tasting, and it comes warmly recommended.”

Discounted Pre-Arrival Pricing on Domaine Dujac

We don’t have to say too much about Dujac. They’re undisputedly one of the top handful of producers in Burgundy, and their collection of vineyards is impressive by any measure. The wines are incredible—built to last and complex as the day is long.

The 2018 vintage represents a distinct triumph for Dujac—one that their winemaker described as “a vintage that will live in Burgundy folklore.” Powerful, deep and complex, they combine intensity with levity—there’s no shortage of brightness and vibrancy in these wines, despite their richness. These are some of the most sought after wines in the world and we’re proud we have such a large collection.

“This is clearly a very successful vintage chez Dujac, and it’s a very consistent portfolio in what is more generally a somewhat heterogeneous vintage. This is a deep and youthfully muscular set of wines….What is clear is that this is a serious vintage, built for the long haul despite its abundance of fruit, and the Dujac 2018s have the makings of very age-worthy wines” – William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Pre-Arrival ETA Friday, October 9th:

Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2018 750ML ($699.95) $579 Subscriber Special, only 4 bottles available
Decanter 97 points “Diana Snowden-Seysses describes this as a ‘spectacular’ Clos de la Roche and no one who’s tasted the wine would accuse her of hyperbole. Bolder and more concentrated than Dujac’s Clos St Denis, this has impressive weight and fruit concentration, 75% whole bunches and 70% new wood. Plush, sweet and intense with notes of black tea and Asian spices.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a beautiful young wine, built for the ages. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, cherries, rose petals, orange rind, woodsmoke, cinnamon and rich soil tones, it’s full-bodied, muscular and introverted, with prodigious concentration, lively acids and a long, ripely tannic finish. While I suspect my visit to Domaine Dujac coincided with an especially brooding evolutionary phase, this will be a Clos de la Roche for the patient.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 94-96 points “The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a different animal from the Clos Saint-Denis, offering sumptuous black cherries, kirsch, cassis and pressed violet aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, more flesh and substance than the Clos Saint-Denis and a multifaceted, persistent, black-pepper-tinged finish that lingers tenderly.”

Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2018 750ML ($699.95) $579 Subscriber Special, only 1 bottle available
Decanter 98 points
“Right up there with the very best wines of the vintage in 2018, this is a beautifully refined expression of the domaine’s St Denis, extending to 1.17ha of this finest of Grands Crus. Everything about this wine is in the right place, with subtle 75% whole bunches, polished, nuanced tannins, thrilling minerality, fine, floral red berry sweetness and lingering minerality. The sort of thing every Pinot lover should cherish.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 95-97 points “The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry, crushed rocks/sandstone and touches of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, brown spices and a slight charcoal-like note. Moderate depth, quite masculine in style, a little austerity on the finish… but that is what you want from a Clos Saint-Denis.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is also showing beautifully, bursting with aromas of raspberries, red cherries, cassis and raw cocoa that are complemented by fragrant top notes of orange rind, rose petals and violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lively and elegant, with finer-grained tannins than the more overtly muscular Clos de la Roche, but with similar dimension and mid-palate presence, concluding with a long and perfumed finish.”

Domaine Dujac Echezeaux Grand Cru 2018 750ML ($649.95) $549 Subscriber Special, only 5 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 93-95 points
“The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru had been racked the day prior to my visit. That said, the bouquet is very well defined, offering black cherries, raspberry, rosemary and pressed rose petal aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, good depth and precision, revealing bitter cherry and a touch of balsamic toward the finish. Very good potential.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94+ points “The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru is a promising cuvée in the making, mingling aromas of dark berry fruit, cassis and cherries with notions of burning embers, dried flowers and dark chocolate. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, broad and ripely tannic, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, lively acids, and a well-defined finish.”

Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($669.95) $519 Subscriber Special, only 6 bottles available
Decanter 96 points
“Perfumed, refined and showing none of the firmness that Aux Malconsorts can exhibit in its youth, this is balanced, nuanced and spicy, with 75% whole bunches adding some freshness and texture, all framed by 70% new wood. Not a blockbuster wine by any means, but this has considerable class, poise and palate length with succulent red berry fruit to the fore.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 94-96 points “The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, black olive and oyster shells, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and cranberry fruit, tangible mineralité, a crunchy texture and fine backbone on the finish. This has the same symmetry and precision as the Beaux Monts but a little more persistence on the aftertaste.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94-96 points “The fireworks begin in earnest with the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, a brilliant young wine that bursts from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries and exotic spices, complemented by delicate top notes of blood orange and peonies and framed by a deft touch of creamy new oak. On the palate,  it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a deep and multidimensional core, lively acids and a long, resonant finish.”

Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanee Beaux Monts Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($449.95) $359 Subscriber Special, only 6 bottles available
Decanter 95 points
“A wine that is both juicy and wonderfully hedonistic, this classy cuvée is fermented with 75% whole bunches and aged in 70% new wood. Comparatively pale in colour, but certainly not lacking in depth or palate weight, it has some tannic grip and subtle wood to complement the plush, palate-caressing fruit. Deliciously drinkable.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 94-96 points “The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a subtle Asian influence on the nose, offering well-defined aromas of hoisin and wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, quite saline in the mouth, with a sense of symmetry on the finish. Simply a class act.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts exhibits a deep bouquet of cherries, plums, orange rind, smoked duck and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple palate that’s succulent and charming, framed by powdery but not unduly assertive tannins.”

Domaine Dujac Gevrey Combottes Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($399.95) $319 Subscriber Special, only 2 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes was showing especially well, soaring from the glass with a lovely bouquet of cassis, dark berry preserve, baking chocolate and peonies. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with lively acids and a long, aromatic finish.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 91-93 points “The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru had not been racked or sulfured when I tasted it from barrel. It has a very pure black cherry, cassis and violet bouquet that seems to grow in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, a grainy texture, impressive depth and a mineral-driven, slightly saline finish that lingers in the mouth.”

Domaine Dujac Morey St Denis AOC Rouge 2018 750ML ($149.95) $115 Subscriber Special, only 7 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 89-91 points
“Wafting from the glass with an inviting bouquet of sweet red cherries, berries, orange rind and spices, the 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is medium to full-bodied, supple and elegant, with powdery structuring tannins, fine concentration and a nicely defined finish.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 87-89 points “The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village features bold blackberry and bilberry aromas that convey an attractive sense of energy. The palate has a pastille-like purity on the entry, fine acidity and a nicely structured, slightly ferrous finish. Enjoy over the next four or five years.”

Domaine Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 2018 750ML ($179.95) $129 Subscriber Special, only 10 bottles available
Decanter 93 points
“Rightly praised for the quality of their top wines, the Seysses family also know how to deliver very good quality further down the price and appellation scale. This village Chambolle is a case in point. It’s quite high in alcohol, but the 75% whole bunches bring some sap and freshness to the party, complementing the savoury red fruit flavours.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is also showing very well, exhibiting aromas of Griotte cherries, raspberries and blood orange, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and youthfully structural, its ample chassis of surprisingly muscular but powdery tannin cloaked in succulent fruit. It’s promising, but based on this showing, it will also require patience.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers copious black cherry and bilberry on the very pure nose, along with gorgeous incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and slightly chalky in texture, with a Morey-Saint-Denis–like structure toward the serious finish. Good potential.”

Domaine Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis Blanc 2018 750ML ($149.95) $99 Subscriber Special, only 3 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 87-89 points
“Revealing generous aromas of pear, ripe lemons and bread dough, the 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Blanc is medium-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit tempered by good tension and grip, concluding with a chalky finish.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Domaine Dujac Morey-St. Denis Luisants Premier Cru Blanc 2018 750ML ($249.95) $179 Subscriber Special, only 2 bottles available
Decanter 95 points
“Picked early to retain acidity in 2018 – and showing a chiselled pH of 3.0 – this is a superb, almost vintage-defying expression of Morey-St-Denis’ greatest white wine vineyard. Fermented in 15% new wood, it’s taut, tangy and scalpel-sharp with wonderful crunch and focus and a chalky, wonderfully refreshing undertone.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points “Aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, green apple and pastry cream preface the 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Monts Luisants Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, chalky and incisive wine that’s racy and tensile. With a finished pH of less than 3.0, this certainly challenges preconceptions about the 2018 vintage.”

Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet Combettes Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($359.95) $279 Subscriber Special, only 2 bottles available
Decanter 94 points
“The white wines can sometimes be overlooked at Domaine Dujac, such is the quality of the reds, but they shouldn’t be. This comes from a parcel of 50 to 70-year-old vines that was picked very early on August 29th. Beautifully balanced between freshness and concentration, it has 15% new wood, notes of cinnamon and vanilla spice and racy, stony acidity.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes reveals attractive aromas of pear, orange oil, toasted hazelnuts and pastry cream. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a richer, more textural and more concentrated profile than the Folatières, differences of both site and vine age being at play here.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 91-93 points “The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru comes from vines in excess of 50 years old. It has an attractive bouquet of dew-dappled green apple, grass clippings and limestone aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is fresh and energetic, showing more tension and nerve than the Folatières, with a captivating saline finish. Excellent.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($249.95) $199 Subscriber Special, only 4 bottles available
Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres Premier Cru 2018 1.5L ($579.95)
$459 Subscriber Special, only 1 magnum available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91-93 points
“The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières was showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, citrus oil, nutmeg and warm pastry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, racy and nicely defined palate that’s long and intense.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 89-91 points “The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru contains around two-thirds young vines and one-third 20- to 30-year-old vines. It has a pleasant green apple and orange pith bouquet, although it lacks the penetration of the 2017 tasted a year earlier. The palate is taut and fresh, with citrus lemon and a lovely saline note that defines the final half. Not an overly complex Folatières, but it will give pleasure over the next decade, possibly more.”

Henriot Champagne

Subscriber Special

With over two centuries of Champagne prowess, and quality only improving, it’s a wonder that we’re able to offer Henriot’s Brut Souverain at such a reasonable price. With consistent praise from some of the industry’s most respected critics, Henriot has emerged as one of Champagne’s best values. This was already one of the smartest buys in the store, and now at Subscriber Special pricing it’s a can’t miss deal.

Henriot Brut Souverain, Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) Was $39, Now $36
Allen Meadows – Burghound 91 points “There is a whiff of quinine to the softly yeasty and citrus-inflected nose of mostly green apple and brioche scents. I like the intensity of the middle weight flavors that have an equally firm effervescence, all wrapped in a clean and very dry finish. This is notably drier than the 8 g/L dosage would suggest and while this is not an especially refined Champagne, I like the depth and character.(10/2019)”
John Gilman 91 points “The new bottling in the market of Henriot “Brut Souverain” is composed of a blend of fifty percent chardonnay, forty-five percent pinot noir and five percent pinot meunier. It spent three years aging sur latte and was finished with a dosage of less than eight grams per liter. The wine offers up a vibrant and precise bouquet of apple, pear, plenty of smokiness, chalky soil tones, fresh-baked bread and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and fairly youthful in structure, with bright acids, lovely focus and grip, a good core, elegant mousse and a long, nascently complex finish. This non-vintage cuvée has a fine record of aging in my cellar and I would not hesitate to tuck this away for a few years and really let it blossom completely. (Drink between 2019-2040) (5/2019)”
Wine Enthusiast 91 points “The standard nonvintage from this producer benefits from its policy of blending in a high percentage of older reserve wines. That gives the wine its richness and smooth, ripe character. Hints of apples are still there along with a good balance between acidity and toastiness. Drink now. (8/2018)”
Wine Spectator 91 points “A touch of vanilla-laced pastry cream sweetness accents this fresh and focused Champagne, with a fine mousse. This is well-balanced by crunchy acidity and flavors of lemon peel, green pear and spring blossom. Drink now through 2022. (11/2019)”

New Magnums from Michel Juillot

Burgundy Value Star

We’ve beaten the drum pretty hard about Michel Juillot in the past and for good reason: he represents some of the best value wines in Burgundy. We’re going to continue that enthusiasm today—we’ve got new magnums from Juillot that are stellar and proof that there is value in Burgundy if you know where to look.

Once you venture outside the Côte d’Or there are some stunning producers making very overlooked wines, especially in Mercurey. Mercurey is the top village in the Côte Chalonnaise, which is located in between the Côte d’Or and the Macon. It boasts 32 Premier Cru vineyards and one of the highest volumes of red wine production, with the wines tending to be elegant and lighter. From better producers (ie: from better farmers) the wines put on more substance, resembling wines from the Côte de Beaune.

Michel Juillot is one of those top producers, the head of a family farming in the Côte Chalonnaise for generations (and with his son, Laurent, assuming more of the winemaking responsibilities, the tradition looks to continue). The estate owns a number of different parcels in a dizzying number of climats, with old vines throughout. Winemaking is pretty hands off, as well—these are wines that have polish, but not excessively so. In 2015-’17 (excellent years for the Chalonnaise), they’re extremely smart buys—someone in 10+ years is going to mistake one for a solid Volnay or Beaune 1er (blind) and you’re going to look like a genius, especially for the prices.

Newly Arrived Magnums:

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos des Barraults Rouge, Mercurey Premier Cru 2015 1.5L ($79.95) $69 special, 9 magnums in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Laurent Juillot’s 2015 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults is absolutely superb, soaring from the glass with a lovely nose of ripe cherries, cassis, smoke, espresso roast, caramelized citrus and incipient forest floor—far more expressive than it was from barrel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and layered, with an almost lavish core of fruit, succulent acids and melting tannins. A terrific Côte Chalonnaise red that offers great value.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos des Barraults Rouge, Mercurey Premier Cru 2016 1.5L ($89.95) $79 special, 9 magnums in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults is excellent, bursting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of ripe cherries, licorice, grilled squab and rose petal. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent, its fine, chalky tannins almost completely concealed by tangy fruit, concluding with a long finish. It’s Laurent Juillot’s favorite in the range, and mine too.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos du Roi, Mercurey Premier Cru 2015 1.5L ($99.95) $79 special, 12 magnums in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2015 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roi from Laurent Juillot is superb, offering up a lovely bouquet of ripe cherries, wild berries, rich soil and incipient notes of game bird that has hardly budged since I tasted it from barrel in October 2016. On the palate, the wine is supple, deep, and medium to full-bodied, with a lovely chassis of fine tannin and the amplest core of fruit of all the domaine’s 1er crus. From a parcel planted in 1932, the domaine’s smallest holding, Juillot formerly bottled this exceptional wine exclusively in magnum, but now opts to release it in regular bottles too. It’s well worth seeking out in either format.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos du Roi, Mercurey Premier Cru 2016 1.5L ($99.95) $79 special, 12 magnums in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Aromas of cherries, cassis, candied peel and dried flowers introduce the 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roi, a full-bodied, ample and generous wine, with lovely purity of fruit and a firm, chalky finish. It’s a bit rounder and richer than the Clos des Barraults, but it doesn’t possess quite as much elegance or length this year.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 1.5L ($399.95) $319 special, 12 magnums in stock now
Burghound 91 points
“Generous wood dominates the otherwise fresh green apple, pear and white flower scents. There is ample minerality on the solidly dense and relatively powerful medium weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel that contrasts markedly with the powerful and impressively long finish where the wood is again quite prominent. I can’t say that the style appeals to me as the wood is more than I prefer but this should still make for fine drinking in a few years time.”

Also in Stock from Michel Juillot:

Domaine Michel Juillot Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge Blanc, Cote Chalonnaise 2017 750ML ($47.95) $33 special, 20 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points
“Aromas of fresh pear, musk melon and orange blossom preface the 2017 Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textural wine that’s attractively satiny and elegant this year. The parcel includes some 90-year-old muscaté selections of Chardonnay.”

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos des Barraults Blanc, Mercurey Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 14 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points
“Juillot’s finest white from Mercurey is the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated wine that’s attractively pure and precise, offering up a charming bouquet of green orchard fruit, flowers and beeswax.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy 2017 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 31 bottles in stock now
“Ripe aromas include those of cassis, red and dark berry fruit along with soft earth nuances. The juicy, indeed even succulent, flavors are at once delicious and round before concluding in a mildly rustic finale. This tasty effort should drink well early on.”-Burghound

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge, Cote Chalonnaise 2016 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Tim Aktins-Decanter 89 points
“Vigorous and firm with some extraction. Good fruit focus, aromatic with some reduction. Just slightly lacks fruit sweetness.”
“The 2016 Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge is somewhat more gourmand than the domaine’s regular Mercurey Village, offering up aromas of ripe cherries, strawberries and licorice followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample palate. Its fine structuring tannins are concealed in a generous core of fruit.” –William Kelley, Wine Advocate

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge, Cote Chalonnaise 2017 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 34 bottles in stock now
“The 2017 Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge is showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of strawberries, cherries, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fleshy and melting, with an ampler, livelier core of fruit than Juillot’s regular Mercurey red.”-William Kelley, Wine Advocate
“Background traces of wood can be found on the liqueur-like aromas of red cherry, earth and gentle spice nuances. There is fine volume to the punchy yet caressing and serious flavors that are shaped by slightly firmer tannins on the ever-so-mildly tangy finale.”-Burgound

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Michel Juillot Clos des Barraults Rouge, Mercurey Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 15 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“The 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults is one of the more reserved wines in the range, unfurling in the glass with a promising bouquet of cherries, cassis, candied peel and espresso roast. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a pure, precise finish. As usual, it’s one of the finest wines in the range and one that possesses some upside.”
Burghound – Outstanding 90 points “A relatively airy nose speaks of both red and dark berry fruit aromas that are cut with nuances of earth, wood and a floral wisp. The caressing and impressively rich medium-bodied flavors coat the palate with dry extract on the lingering finish that isn’t quite as complex though there is no warmth.”

Jacques Prieur Sale

For those who love Burgundy built on power and full-bodied complexity, there are few greater estates than the Domaine Jacques Prieur. The Domaine is one of the most historic names in Burgundy, with prime holdings in some of the finest Grand Crus in the Côte d’Or.

We have a few remaining examples of the Domaine’s finest wines, those from Grand Crus Chambertin and Clos Vougeot. These are do-not-miss wines if you are serious about Burgundy–top vintages from these vineyards don’t often hit the market, and even less often priced so low.

Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2005 750ML ($469.95) Was $419, Now $399 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 93-96 points
“Full ruby. Brooding, deep aromas of blackberry, black cherry, minerals, violet and earth. Pure, precise and superconcentrated, with uncanny density and strength of blackberry and floral flavor. This saturates the entire palate, finishing with very firm tannins, a lightly mentholated quality and great persistence. Will need extended aging to express its inherent complexity.”
Burghound 93-95 points “A supremely classy, refined and regally reserved nose of a simply amazing panoply of aromas that run the entire gamut of fruit from red to black and includes spice, game, leather, tea, underbrush and plenty of Gevrey earth that can also be found on the rich, full, powerful and robustly structured flavors that are perhaps a bit more new world in style than the rest of the range yet it sacrifices no sense of detail on the textured and hugely long finish. This isn’t really my style but there is no question that the ’05 Cham is a genuinely great wine.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2005 750ML ($359.95) Was $299, Now $279 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 92-95 points
“The ripest wine to this point with a distinctly floral component adding nuance to the cassis and blackberry aromas that precede the rich, full, serious and sleekly muscled flavors that are supported by a concentrated, tannic and hugely long finish. This is not an elegant wine or even especially sophisticated yet it’s an absolutely serious wine built for the very long haul. Don’t even think of cracking a bottle for at least a decade and even that will be too early.”
Stephen Tanzer 91-94 points “Good bright red-ruby. Very closed, primary aromas of black cherry, mint and minerals, with a hint of peppery spice that comes from vinification with 5% whole clusters (the rest of the fruit was destemmed but not crushed). Sweet, lush and stuffed with ripe black fruit and mineral flavors. There’s nothing hard about this Clos Vougeot, despite the late end to its malolactic fermentation. A violet note contributes to the impression of finesse. Broad, dusty tannins arrive late.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

“Good full red. Perfumed nose offers black cherry, menthol and fresh herbs. Vibrant and aromatic in the mouth but evolving very slowly. Densely packed, juicy and tactile wine, with a penetrating minerality contributing energy. Finishes with real length and cut, the tannins reaching the incisors. Here’s another case where I prefer the 2006 to the young 2007.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Flashy oak is matched by dense black cherry and blackberry flavors in this powerful red. The tannins are slightly rustic, but the fruit is focused and pure. Needs some time. Best from 2012 through 2022. 50 cases imported.”
