USA:
Domaine Drouhin Oregon ‘Arthur’ Chardonnay 2011 ($34.95) $27 special
Domaine Drouhin Oregon Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2011 ($41.95) $33 super special

JK Carriere Vespidae Pinot Noir 2010 ($39.95) $33 special
Josh Raynolds 91 points “Bright ruby-red. Cool, restrained aromas of red and dark berries, cola, dried flowers and minerals. Builds in sweetness with air, offering densely packed, chewy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors reined in by tangy acidity that contributes focus and cut. Finishes firm, spicy and very long, with fine-grained tannins adding grip. Definitely decant this one if you insist on drinking it now.”

JK Carriere Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 ($59.95) $51.90 special limited supply on this one
Josh Raynolds 92 points “Bright ruby-red. Intense cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by notes of candied rose, vanilla and Asian spices. Fleshy but lively and precise, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors and an exotic touch of cola on the back half. The red berry note carries through a long, gently tannic finish that shows a refreshingly bitter quality.”

Eyrie Marguerite Pinot Noir 2000 ($89.95) $77 special very limited supply on this one
Josh Raynolds 92 points “Pale red. Black raspberry, rose, smoky minerals and musky herbs on the highly perfumed nose. Fully mature, as one would expect, offering sweet red fruit, floral pastille and allspice flavors and a touch of smoked meat. Closes on a gently spicy note, with lingering floral and red fruit flavors and very good persistence. This wine is a blend of barrels selected by the late David Lett from the birth year of his first granddaughter.”

Soter Pinot Noir Mineral Springs 2009 ($89.95) $77 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2009 Pinot Noir Mineral Springs is a bottling sourced from the tenderloin of the vineyard. More expressive and elegant than the Mineral Springs Ranch, it shows off the best aspects of the vintage. Beautifully proportioned and impeccably balanced, it is one of the stars of the vintage.”

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Knight’s Valley 2010 ($59.95) $49 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Strikingly rich and layered, this red is beautifully balanced, elegant and graceful, with a tremendous mix of blackberry, mocha, melted black licorice and currant flavors, ending with firm, grainy tannins. The push of ripe fruit is long and persistent. Drink now through 2022” Robert Parker 94 points ‘A fabulous wine for the appellation, Beringer’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Knights Valley boasts gorgeous integration of fruit, acidity and tannin. This is an especially silky, textured wine for Knights Valley. Blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, tobacco, sage and rosemary are all layered into this relatively succulent, round Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet floral notes along with a hint of tar and violets add complexity on the finish. The 2010 is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc that spent 17 months in French oak barrels, 33% new.’

FRANCE:
Pol Roger Champagne Brut Sir Winston Churchill 2000 ($249.95) $219 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points ‘The first thing that is evident about the 2000 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is its finesse and total silkiness. The 2000 is a rich, creamy and deeply expressive Winston Churchill. I don’t see the 2000 being an especially long-term ager, but it is wonderfully radiant and open today. Hints of pastry, spice, apricots and succulent ripe pears blossom on the expansive, broad-shouldered finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.’

JJ Confuron Romanee Saint Vivant Grand Cru 2011 ($379.95) $299 special
Burghound 91-94 points “A discreetly if broadly spicy nose of violets and black pinot fruit is quite cool and pure. There is a fine sense of focus to the silky-textured medium weight flavors that possess seriously good depth and balance on the strikingly long finish. There is a real sense of harmony here and while the tannins are quite fine they are also dense and this will require at least a decade of cellaring to arrive at its peak. Lovely.”

Andre Perret Cotes du Rhone 2010 ($27.95) $21.90 special
Andre Perret Saint Joseph 2010 ($39.95) $31.90 special

Château Pradeaux Bandol Rouge 2007 ($41.95) $36 special

Domaine Janvier Jasnieres Cuvee Silex 2011 ($24.95) $21.90 special

Domaine Pepiere Muscadet Sur Lie Clisson 2010 ($24.95) $21.90 special
Domaine Pepiere Muscadet Sur Lie Clisson 2010 magnums ($59.95) $49 special
Domaine Pepiere Muscadet Sur Lie Clisson 2010 3.0L ($149.95) $119 special
Wine & Spirits 93 points “Among the grandest, most ageworthy wines from Pépière’s domaine, Clisson grows on granite covered in well-drained gravel. Marc Ollivier and Rémi Branger grew a fragrant 2010, seemingly delicate in its leesy scents of pear, apple and tart white peach. Spend some time with the wine and you’ll begin to notice how compressed it is, the rainwater freshness of the fruit hiding the firmness of its acidity, the length of flavor continuing on to a lasting memory. A great vintage of Clisson, this is lovely to drink as a young wine, and it will reward after cellaring for a decade.”

Château Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose 2012 ($27.95) $21.90 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Refined and elegant, offering pure and concentrated flavors of dried red berry, tangerine and melon. The focused finish features flint and spice notes, with a hint of cream. Drink now.”

Chateau de Roquefort Grele Rose VDP Mediterranee 2012 ($17.95) $14 special
Josh Raynolds 90 points “(a blend of carignan, cinsault, grenache, mourvedre, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and rolle): Pale orange. High-pitched aromas of orange zest, strawberry and white flowers, with a chalky mineral overtone. Delicate and precise on the palate, offering tangy citrus and red fruit flavors that put on weight with air. Shows impressive cut and lift on the spicy finish, with the mineral and floral notes echoing.”

ITALY:
Domenico Clerico ‘Arte’ Langhe Rosso 2010 ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2010 Langhe Rosso Arte is a crowd-pleasing blend of Nebbiolo (about 90 percent) and Barbera that drinks sumptuously even at this young age. It shows the important structure, acidity and promptness of fruit for a steady evolution. Many of Clerico’s best wines are engineered in this fashion: Although they taste beautiful straight out of the bottle, they generously reward those who wait. In this case, you get layers of bold fruit, spice, and tobacco that are carefully woven into the thick and enduring fabric of the wine. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.”

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2009 ($149.95) $119 special
Wine Enthusiast 98 points “Made from 100% Cabernet Franc, Paleo opens with concentrated, sweet-smelling aromas of plum, cherry and cinnamon, which translate to the palate with added notes of spice, leather and tobacco. This is bold, opulent and delicious, and it’s guaranteed to please. Hold for 10 years or more.”

Le Macchiole Scrio 2009 ($189.95) $149 special
Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Bold and complex, this Syrah opens with intense, superrich notes of chocolate fudge, maraschino cherry, tobacco, sweet spice and rum cake. Smooth, elegant and persistent, this amazing expression boasts ripe fruit tannins. Drink after 2016”

San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 2008 ($49.95) $39 special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is strikingly beautiful in this vintage. Sweet floral notes meld into raspberries, flowers, mint and spices. A sexy, radiant wine, the 2008 impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The long, polished finish is impeccable. All the elements are in the right place. I don’t expect the 2008 to be a long-term ager, but it is very appealing today.”

new week – Champagne Gratien- new arrivals

Alfred Gratien Blanc de Blanc Brut Millesime 2007 ($119.95) $79 special
Wine Spectator 93 points “Backed by intense and mouthwatering acidity, this firm version offers tightly knit flavors of lemon meringue, poached pear, pastry, with hints of hazelnut and coconut. Shows fine texture, and a smoky, mineral-driven base. Drink now through 2020”

Alfred Gratien Cuvee Paradis Cuvee 05 Brut NV (2005) ($149.95) $119 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “A lovely thread of ginger, star anise, cardamom and clove spice unravels through flavors of toasted almond, tangy apple puree, black raspberry, pastry, coconut and candied lemon zest. Like fine silk in texture, this remains mouthwatering through to the long, lasting finish. Drink now through 2022”

Alfred Gratien Brut Millesime 1996 ($199.95) $159 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 1996 Brut Millesime shows why this vintage is so highly regarded. Everything is in the right place. Rich, voluptuous, yet also structured, the 1996 impresses for its superb overall balance. There is lovely complexity in the glass, but none of the aggression found in some wines. A soft, gracious finish laced with a totally refined mousse rounds things out in style. The 1996 is 65% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.”

Alfred Gratien Brut Millesime 1997 ($199.95) $149 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “Gratien’s 1997 Brut Millesime impresses for its direct, frank personality and huge fruit. An infant today, the 1997 is surprising for its youth. The aromas and flavors remain quite primary in this rich, vibrant Champagne. Frankly, I am amazed the 1997 is so backward. I would never have expected it. Readers should drink the 1999 and 1998 before looking to the 1997 for pleasure. I can’t wait to see how the 1997 develops. Today it is flat-out striking. The 1997 is 66% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. ”

Alfred Gratien Brut Millesime 1998 ($199.95) $159 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “A relatively rich, broad shouldered wine, the 1998 Brut Millesime is showing beautifully. Here the aromas and flavors have begun to develop the early hints of tertiary complexity, making the 1998 a great choice for drinking today. Suggestions of white truffles, apricot jam, hazelnuts, hard candy and dried flowers wrap around the gorgeous, striking finish. The 1998 is 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.”

Ransom Selection Pinot Noir WV 2010 ($27.95) $17 flash sale special ends August 12 or sold out prior
David Schildknecht- The Wine Advocate 90-91 points “Adding Johan Vineyard to the roster of four sites that informed this cuvee’s previous edition, the Ransom 2010 Pinot Noir Selection-tasted in a close approximation to its final assemblage-delivers downright refreshingly as well as invigoratingly tangy red currant and fraises des bois, tinged with coriander seed, nutmeg, and rose hip. Buoyant to the point of delicacy, this finishes with mouthwatering persistence and is sure on release to represent an outstanding value that can be enjoyed over at least the next half dozen years. Incidentally, given its manifest vivacity and stamina, Seestedt expected not to bottle it before July.”

Ransom Cattrall Vineyard Pinot Noir WV 2010 ($34.95) $24.90 flash sale special ends Aug 12 or sold out prior
David Schildknecht- The Wine Advocate 90-91 points “Tasted in close approximation to its final assemblage, Seestedt’s roughly 200 cases worth of 2010 Pinot Noir Cattrall Vineyard smells and tastes pungently and invigoratingly of tart-edged, seedy red currant, elderberry and black raspberry mingled with coriander, fresh ginger, lemon zest, and orange peel to a degree that makes you suspect he smuggled some of his botanical gin- or vermouth infusions into the blend! Except that the alcohol here is so low it supports an uncanny sense of levity and genuine refreshment for red wine. Look for fine value and 6-8 years of delicious fascination from this highly distinctive Pinot”

Beaune Bounty – Chandon de Brailles – here mid August

From Briailles, Savigny, looking to Corton, en hiver!

Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses Blanc 2010 ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
John Gilman 91+ points “The 2010 Ile de Vergelesses blanc was showing wonderfully in November, offering up a lovely nose of pineapple, green apples, beautifully complex, chalky minerality, beeswax and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, fullbodied, pure and very refined, with a sense of seamless elegance, a fine core, sound acids and excellent length and grip on the classy finish. This was not chapitalized as well and weighs in at a very civilized 12.5 percent alcohol in 2010. A lovely wine.”

Chandon de Briailles Corton Blanc 2010 ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
John Gilman 94+ Points “The 2010 Corton Blanc from Chandon de Briailles is an utterly classic vintage for this fine wine. The nose offers up a lovely mélange of pear, tangerine, lemon, chalky soil tones, smoke and spring flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very refined on the attack, with a beautiful core of silky fruit, laser-like focus, bright, zesty acids and outstanding length and grip on the very pure, dancing and seamless finish. A beautiful, beautiful bottle of wine.” Stephen Tanzer 93+ points “Pale golden-yellow color. Highly perfumed scents of peach, lemon peel, licorice, ginger, nutmeg, aromatic herbs, licorice and mint. Dense and tactile on entry, they nicely sweet in the middle, with strong flavors of minerals, botanical herbs and mint. Quite powerful on the end, even a bit youthfully aggressive, with multidimensional finishing flavors of talc, citrus zest, brown spices and salty minerality. Outstanding soil-driven wine in the making, from
vines that average about 30 years of age.”

Chandon de Briailles Savigny les Beaune 2010 ($39.95) $34.50 pre-arrival special
Chandon de Briailles Savigny les Beaune Aux Forneaux 2010 ($44.95) $36 pre-arrival special
John Gilman 91+ points “In 2010, the Chandon de Briailles Fourneaux was destemmed seventy percent. This is a really lovely example of the vintage, bursting from the glass in a red fruity mélange of cherries, currants, blood orange, a lovely base of complex soil tones, coffee and a nice topnote of spice. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with lovely transparency, a fine core of fruit, moderate tannins and lovely length and grip on the complex and beautifully balanced finish. Fine juice.”

Chandon de Briailles Savigny les Beaune les Lavieres 2010 ($59.95) $44 pre-arrival special
John Gilman 93+ points “In 2010, the domaine decided not to chapitalize the les Lavières, as it had just beautiful sugar levels and came in at 12.7 percent alcohol naturally. This is an absolutely beautiful example of the vintage, offering up a deep, refined and very complex nose of cherries, strawberries, blood orange, a beautifully complex base of soil, roses, citrus zest and a touch of vinesmoke in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and fullish, with a very sappy core of fruit, beautiful transparency, suave tannins and a very, very long, pure and utterly seamless finish. A beautiful bottle of les Lavières”

Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 2010 ($44.95) $37 pre-arrival special
Burghound 90 points “A very pretty, indeed perfumed nose combines both red and dark berry fruit with plenty of earth nuances as well as a background hint of wet stone. There is fine complexity to the rich and voluminous flavors that also possess excellent cut and plenty of underlying tension before terminating in a firm, linear and moderately austere finish. This will need time to flesh out as it’s decidedly compact today.”

Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 2010 ($59.95) $44 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Moderately saturated medium red. Initially less expressive on the nose than the Lavieres, but opened in the glass to reveal complex scents of red fruits, menthol, meat, leather, pepper and soil. Wonderfully suave in the mouth; stony but without any rough edges. Juicy red fruit and mineral flavors spread out to saturate the entire palate, then build subtly and inexorably on the long aftertaste. This subtly scented wine boasts excellent mid-term aging potential. This bottling is often a sentimental favorite of mine, and in 2010 it’s a knockout. It would be a shame to open it too early.”

Chandon de Briailles Corton Marechaudes 2010 ($99.95) $88 pre-arrival special
Burghound 92 Points “This is quite ripe with its earthy and distinctly sauvage nose of dark berry fruit, plum and violet aromas. There is excellent volume to the very rich and textured large-scaled flavors that possess an impressively persistent, complex, velvety and mouth coating finish. This is well-balanced and harmonious and frankly better than what I usually find with this wine, which is typically very good but rarely truly distinguished. I would go so far as to say that 2010 is the best vintage for this wine that I have seen since the 1990.”

Chandon de Briailles Corton Bressandes 2010 ($119.95) $91.90 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 94 Points “Moderately saturated medium red. Initially smelled like a white wine, with its wild mint and citrus peel scents, then opened to reveal cherry, raspberry and red licorice. Densely packed and utterly seamless, with a restrained sweetness and excellent energy to the tactile, lightly saline middle palate. Conveys a strong impression of solidity without any excess weight. With its perfectly integrated acidity, this grand cru really stimulates the taste buds on the superb, rising finish. Should age a long time.” John Gilman 95 points “The 2010 Corton “Bressandes” here is a beautiful wine in the making. The wine was made with sixty percent whole clusters in this vintage. The deep and utterly brilliant nose soars from the glass in a blaze of red plums, currants, strawberries, a touch of cinnamon, a magically complex base of soil, orange zest and a gentle topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and stunningly pure on the attack,
with a sappy core of fruit, superb transparency, plenty of fine-grained tannins and outstanding length and grip on the young seamless and stony finish. A beautiful bottle of Corton.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Graacher Himmelreich 2008 ($31.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The Prum 2008 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett smells of green tea, fresh apple, honeysuckle, and acacia; offers boundless refreshment and gravity-defying buoyancy with pungent invigoration of citrus peel and apple skin; and finishes with its pure fruit and effusive, persistent inner-mouth floral perfume allied to saline, stony, smoke, iodine-like and remarkably savory manifestations of things mineral. It will reward 20-25 years of cellaring for the few who put that claim to the test – or who are already convinced by their past experience with Prum Rieslings”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2008 ($31.95) $26 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Succulent aromas of cherry, apple blossom and sweet herbs. Firm apricot pit fruit, but with a refreshing acid bounce framing the palate. The elegant finish features persistent slatey minerality. My candidate for the kabinett of the vintage.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2007 ($31.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The Prum 2007 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett displays the classic fresh apple, apple blossom, and vanilla of the site. Crushed stone and the bitter side of the vanilla bean help temper the sweetness here. This shows alluring creaminess along with refined delicacy, finishing long on fresh apple, sweet floral perfume, and wet stone along with hints of anise and vanilla. “This is Kabinett the way we imagine it,” remarks Katharina Prum, although hardly surprisingly, the estate’s quantities at this Pradikat level are smaller than are those at Spatlese grade. And I would add that it is unlikely very many vintages of this iconic Mosel will age more expressively or successfully than the one under consideration here.”

time to say goodbye

Hob Nob Shiraz VDP d’Oc 2009 ($11.95) $3.30 special only 4 cases left
Jeb Dunnuck- Rhone Report “Along the same lines (as the Cabernet) and well made, the 2009 Hob Nob Vineyards Shiraz Vin de Pays d’Oc shows a deep purple color that leads to a bright bouquet of purple fruits, spice, menthol, and bramble like notes. Medium bodied, plumb, and round, with solid texture and richness, this has a delicious easy drinking profile and should be consumed over the next 1-2 years.”

R de la Grange Muscadet S&M Sur Lie 2007 ($17.95) $7.70 special
From Remy Luneau, of the notable Luneau family behind the top class Luneau-Papin Muscadet wines. This too is a very good Muscadet, at an interesting age. Well made Muscadet matures very well, and our 2007 is at the beginning of that path. The greenness disappears, replaced by yellow fruits and an accentuation of Muscadet’s inherent brine character. We just wanted to make room for new wines- and make, for you, a great deal. If you have ever tossed shellfish on the top of your grill, unbeatable. Or most cheeses, or whatever that swims.
