Lou Kapcsandy’s biography reads like a Horatio Alger story in a lot of ways.  Man flees communist Hungary, lands in the US and makes a name (and business) for himself.  Grows to love the wines of Bordeaux, so he starts an import company before he stumbles upon a once-legendary vineyard in Napa that has been ripped up and needs to be revived. And

Pian dell’Orino’s Brilliant Brunello; Clouet for the Holidays; German Riesling End of Bin Sales; Rinaldi’s Incredible 2013 Barolo Crus; Karthauserhof’s Lean Mean Riesling

The Next Legendary Brunello Producer

Pian dell’Orino’s Monumental 2011

Soldera. Biondi Santi. The two giants of Brunello. Pretty soon it looks like we might be able to add Pian dell’Orino to that list. Brunello insiders have known about the wines for several years now, but the secret seems to be getting out. We don’t get a lot of these wines, but we have enough to offer them today and we’re really excited to share them with you.

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon
Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
VinopolNote “While the 2014 version of this was good, the 2015 represents a step up in the quality (and value) of this offering.  This has held its own in blind tasting against good, village level Meursault and emulates that style—a discreet kiss of wood and bright acidity.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Goodfellow Family Cellars Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2015 750ML ($47.95) $39 special

VinopolNote “Durant is a historic site in the Dundee Hills, first planted in the ‘70’s.

2014 Rostaing Ampodium

A Excellent Deal Gets Better

2014 is an excellent year to buy Rene Rostaing’s Ampodium Cote Rotie, and not just because we’ve dropped the price on it to make it an even better deal.

No, 2014 was a very good year in Cote Rotie, qualitatively, but yields were way down—60% off of normal in the case of Rostaing.  As a result, he made only one Cote Rotie, declassifying the Landonne and Cote Brune into the Ampodium bottling (which used to be known as “Classique” if you’ve been following the wines for a while).
