Cameron Winery Nebbiolo, Dundee Hills 2018 750ml $37 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
Mostly sourced from Allen Foster’s tiny planting of Nebbiolo in his orchard in the Ribbon Ridge, the vineyard portion is named White Oak. Winemaker and owner of Cameron, John Paul, also blends in a splash from the Clos Electrique planting of Nebbiolo. We were blown away by

Patricia Green Cellars Durant Madrone Block Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Durant Vineyard, Madrone Block Pinot Noir: The Madrone Block’s Dijon 115 planting creates a much different Pinot Noir than the Pommard Clone from the Bishop Block, and it is special enough to be bottled on its own. This block brings in the velvety texture that Dundee Hills Pinot Noirs can have without losing their sense of place. This wine is definitely deep in fruit and oozing with textural appeal. This borders right on sultry as all bottlings of this block have since we began producing it in 2012. Almost certainly, this is the single vineyard designate with the most upfront appeal to it. This will show sweet red fruits which are certainly a staple of the vintage with classic Dundee Hill sweet spices. Hard not to like.”

Patricia Green Cellars Volcanic Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Winemaking and Notes:This bottling comes equally from the high elevation, 1990 plantings of Pommard in Balcombe Vineyard, the mid-tier elevation of both the 44 year-old Pommard clone vines in Durant Vineyard’s Bishop Block and the Dijon 115 in the 18 year-old Madrone Block, the 38-year old vines from Weber Vineyard and from a Worden Hill Rd. site planted in 1990 that is bottled under the name ‘Mysterious’. This mix allows us to take from the cooler, windier Breyman Orchard sites (Balcombe and Durant) as well as the cool vineyard within the warm growing area (Worden Hill Rd.) to show a complete picture of the Dundee Hills and its volcanic soil influences. While some element of whole cluster fermentations barrels was used, no new barrels were incorporated so as to show the clearest path from soil to wine as possible. This wine has a dynamic set of vineyards that make it up. What comes forth is pure Dundee Hills goodness. Red fruits and spices combine on an incredible textural lattice making this wine both edu-mah-cational and very difficult to not find appealing. Come for the geology, stay for the incredible taste.”

Vincent Pinot Gris Rouge, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $24 special, 12 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
A blend of Dion and Zenith vineyard fruit that was left on the skins for three weeks and aged in older barriques. This is rich in color for the style with perfumy notes of blood oranges, golden raspberries, and rose petals. It’s grippier, too, than other examples with a lovely texture that plays off the tangy acidity.

Vincent Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $22.75 special, 12 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
Right now this is in a precocious stage with a light and lithe body and aromatic approach. It’s showing juicy notes of ultra-ripe watermelon and cherries with a nutty finish. Fruit ws sourced from Armstrong, Temperance Hill, and Zenith vineyards.

Here’s where things start to get serious with more concentration and texture. The aromatics offer up classic notes of violet petals, cherries, and red currants. Bravo!

Hundred Suns

A Willamette Valley Star

Grant Coulter is one of the Pacific Northwest’s rising stars. The former managing winemaker at Beaux Frères (under tutelage of the legendary Mike Etzel), Grant’s made a name for himself as Flâneur’s Head Winemaker, as well as with his own label: Hundred Suns. Anyone who loves the Beaux Frères or Flâneur wines needs to be paying attention to what Grant is doing.

Named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, the Hundred Suns wines drink like a love letter to Oregon. You can taste the Beaux Freres-inspired style, but these are wines that are uniquely Grant, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley and along the Columbia River. Their bold reds hail from the Columbia Gorge and The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. Famed for their juxtaposition of aromatic lift and minerality against ripe fruit character, it’s easy to see why Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah share the throne for most cultivated varietal.

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2020 750ml $29 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Golden straw with a hint of pale green at the edges, this wine has aromas of Meyer lemons, vanilla bean, and wet stone. Succulent flavors sail across brilliant networks of acidity and fine grain textures that keep your mouth watering for more. Winemaking: The 2020 vintage was a warm and consistent growing season. Our collection of vineyards was picked with an uncanny balance of acidity and flavor. The resulting grapes were immediately whole cluster pressed, and only the juice from the middle cut of the press cycle was selected and sent into stainless steel tanks to rest. Three to five days later native yeast fermentation took hold. The wines were then moved into a collection of 15% new and 85% seasoned French oak barrels where they were gently stirred once a week during primary fermentation. They remained on the lees until bottling. The composition of the three vineyards was blended into tanks after 11 months and bottled unfiltered in August of 2021.”

Hundred Suns Syrah, Columbia Gorge, Oregon 2019 750ml $44 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Reminiscent of wines from the northern Rhone in its complexity and structure. Initial aromas of flint and molasses give way to Asian plum, espresso, and hoisin. Vineyard: 2019 was a long growing season with moderate but dry days and cool nights blowing from the vast Columbia River. We were lucky to secure 1.5 tons of mixed clone Syrah from the Three Sleeps Vineyard located in Oregon’s Columbia Gorge AVA. This windswept vineyard located outside the town of Mosier consists of silty clay soils over basalt rocks formed from eons of floods, glacial movement, and volcanic activity. Planted in 2002 by Patrick Reuter and Leigh Bartholomew, it is farmed organically. Winemaking: 100% whole bunches were placed in an open-top fermenter and a 500 liter amphora and allowed to ferment untouched for ten days. Then, we foot stomped the clusters to release the dark juice from inside. After three days of maceracion the grapes were pressed to stainless steel where they finished primary fermentation. The wines were aged in a combination of terracotta and seasoned French oak. After 10 months they were racked to all neutral oak and left to age for an additional seven months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in March of 2021.”

Hundred Suns Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah, The Rocks District, Oregon 2020 750ml $44 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Explosive blue fruit mingles with dried herbs and red bell pepper. This abundance of fruit is balanced by the earthy Syrah, which makes this wine a delicious and complex wine to be consumed now and over the next five years. Vineyard: Sourced from the famed River Rock Vineyard located in the The Rocks District of Milton Freewater, Oregon. These soils (or lack thereof), called the Freewater Series, are eroded basalt cobbles and pebbles from the Blue Mountains. The rocks, sand, and silt were laid down in layer upon layer forming an alluvial fan on the flat Walla Walla valley floor. These dynamic soils require the vines to push roots deep between the rocks to find nutrients while the warmth absorbed by the rocks helps ripen our Cabernet. Winemaking: A Pinot Noir winemaker’s rendition of noble Cabernet (with a little Syrah). These grapes were hand-harvested and brought back to our winery in McMinnville where they were fully destemmed into a single one ton open top fermenter. After three days the native yeast took off. We gently pumped-over the juice twice daily and after ten days the fermentation was completed. Pressed to Neutral French oak and 450 liter amphora the wine rested, unmoved, for one year and was gently racked into a bottling tank. The resulting co-fermentation was bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Hundred Suns Syrah, The Rocks District, Oregon 2020 750ml $44 special, 27 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Aromas of blueberries open to black olives, licorice, creme brulee, and sage. The flavors are pure, with a hint of bittersweet chocolate and bacon fat. Winemaking: As with all of our Rhone wines the grapes were placed 100% whole bunch in tank. Gentle foot crushing in the beginning released some of the juice from the thick, leathery skins. The tank was dosed with a native yeast pied de cuve and allowed to sit untouched for 10 days. After this time the fermenter was opened and foot-stomped for two days then pressed off the skins and stems. The dark juice was placed in a combination of terracotta amphora and neutral French oak, where it rested for 10 months. The wine was moved to tank and bottled unfined and unfiltered in August of 2021. Vineyard: Sourced from vineyards located in the smallest sub-AVA in Oregon, The Rocks District of Milton Freewater. This soil (or lack thereof), called the Freewater Series is formed from eroded basalt cobbles and pebbles from the Blue Mountains. The rocks, sand, and silt were laid down in layers upon layers of an alluvial fan on the flat Walla Walla valley floor. These dynamic soils require the vine to push roots deep between the rocks to find nutrients while the warmth absorbed by the rocks helps ripen our Syrah.”

2021 Donnhoff Wines

Peruse the Crus from one of the most classically-styled vintages in decades!

Dönnhoff is perhaps our favorite German producer.  They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the top dozen Rieslings in nearly every vintage.  Part of that is a privileged location—they own some of the best vineyards in the Nahe, which is one of the most geologically diverse parts of Germany.  The other part is the exceptional drive and focus of Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff, who will stop at nothing to produce the best wines in Germany.

“After the last four warm years, this vintage is after a long time again a ‘classic German year’ – accompanied by many challenges and hard work, but with a satisfying end. The 2021 vintage promises very clear, filigree wines with an extraordinary inner density and a wonderfully finesse-rich acidity.” -Cornelius Dönnhoff, from Skurnik Wines

“Brace yourself for a great dive into the past: This is a vintage of fresh, lean, and racy wines. Following a trio of hot vintages (2018-2019-2020), 2021 is a real return to older vintages and brings back memories of the early 1990s and even 1980s…” –Mosel Fine Wines, writing on the northerly neighboring Mosel region – a worthy weight in on 2021 German wines more broadly

On the palate, this is a light, refined and elegant, very delicate and light-footed Spätlese with remarkable finesse and fine phenolic grip. 2021 Donnhoff Wines Arriving in November:

Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2021 750ml $41.90 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2021 Roxheimer Höllenpfad Riesling trocken is very clear, refined and coolish on the stony and flinty  yet tender, beautifully balanced and spicy nose that reveals perfectly ripe and elegant Riesling fruit with rosemary and salty, darker-toned terroir notes. Lush and refined on the palate, this is a dense and complex, firmly structured but elegant, smooth-flowing and persistently saline Höllenpfad with a long, saline and juicy finish. A gorgeous Riesling that is outstanding again. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2021 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 100 points
“From slate and volcanic soils, the 2021 Dellchen GG opens with a radiant, bright, pure and flinty bouquet with fascinating, refined and subtle, highly elegant yet delicate mirabelle and Amalfi lemon fruit intertwined with slatey notes. The bouquet is heavenly to me (and will be, believe me, for all true Riesling lovers). Mahler’s 8th symphony, Fausten’s Ascension—it’s all here. Subtle intensity, a sense of wonder, perfectly interwoven, natural beauty. This nose already tells everything, and I couldn’t go on to the next wine for more than half an hour. On the palate, this is a subtle and delicate, highly filigreed yet also incredibly intense, lush and slatey, long, stimulatingly saline and always uplifted Riesling with perfectly ripe and lush fruit with fine tannins. It is a juicy, ripe wine with crystalline acidity and endless salinity that carries everything. This Dellchen is intense yet never gets heavy, but it becomes even more intense. This is immaculate, highly emotional Riesling. It’s not just the most beautiful Dellchen I have ever tasted but certainly also the most fascinating dry Riesling I have ever had. This is pure art. An adorable wine and with so much soul. It can’t be expensive enough. When Helmut Dönnhoff was speaking about the feminine, charming and tender character of the cru, it is all here. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2021 750ml $79 pre-arrival special
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Dönnhoff’s 2021 Felsenberg GG is pure, bright and flinty on the deep, intense and iodine nose that also reveals phenolic complexity. Full-bodied but refined and elegant on the plate, this is a balanced and light-footed, rich and dense Felsenberg with juicy fruit and crystalline acidity, whereas the tannins step back compared to the Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg. The finish is rich yet refined and saline, with delicate lemon bitters and lush fruit. Although the 2021 is already charming, the wine needs some years on the bottle to show all its complexity and finesse without its youthful charm. This is not an austere wine that needs to soften its edges; it’s already dangerously good or even too good to cause patience. But the wine will reward those who can wait. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2021 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98-99 points
“Aged on the full lees until June this year and to be bottled the day after I tasted it, the 2021 Hermannshöhle GG offers a clear, deep, intense and complex bouquet of iodine slate aromas intertwined with lemon oil notes and those of crushed stones. Darker toned and more remote or aristocratic yet also intense and concentrated, it has a sur lie character and concentrated fruit. Full-bodied, dense, yet crystalline and saline on the palate, this is a powerful, rich and persistent Hermannshöhle with a long, complex and aromatic finish with fine tannins and stimulating lemon bitters. Still with rougher grip, this is an intense and lush, still dismissive Hermannshöhle. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2021 750ml $59 pre-arrival special
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95 points
“From the southeast-facing part of the vineyard, the 2021 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese is very clear, pure and flinty on the concentrated nose. Sweet, refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a weightless, saline and filigreed, playful Spätlese with great balance and delicacy. Not dramatic but quiet and in beautiful balance. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2021 750ml $54.50 pre-arrival special
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Pure, precise and bright on the nose, with delicately flinty and spicy aromas, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is a fabulously piquant and stimulating Spätlese with mineral intensity, complexity, grip and tension, as if there were electric wires in this wine. It’s enormously vital and stimulating. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Pressed with whole bunches in a basket press for about five hours and vinified in a single halbstück (650 liter), the 2021 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese is one of the rare botrytis wines of the vintage, and it opens with a clear, precise and aromatic bouquet with candied pink grapefruit aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense, generous and salty, piquant and delicate yet also rich and sweet but light and lifted Auslese with great balance and elegance. A fabulous, delicate and fine, juicy and filigreed Auslese. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Picked a few days before the GG, the 2021 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese is based on highly ripe Riesling berries and opens with a clear, lemony, pure, fresh and finely concentrated bouquet with grapefruit, lime and slate aromas. Basket pressed, this is a lush and generous, pure, saline and piquant Auslese with a long, intense and highly stimulating finish with very fine bitters. The Hermannshöhle was picked with the highest must weight and acidity level and represents the most complex and generous yet also precise Auslese of the vintage. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2021 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“Picked the same day as the GG and the Spätlese on November 8 but with finely shriveled botrytis berries, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese offers a clear and finely lemony bouquet with very fine botrytis tones, even though botrytis was less widely spread here than in the Felsenberg. On the palate, this is a rich and intense yet very precise and filigreed, refined and pure Auslese with an enormously saline and lively, long and energetic finish that shows piquant acidity. Superb. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 $219 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 93 points
“This is presently quite firmly reduced so I would advise decanting it for 30 minutes or so first if you’re going to try and bottle young. Otherwise the medium weight, velvety and highly seductive flavors possess fine concentration thanks to the abundant sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a toasty and nicely complex finish that delivers sneaky good length. This acidulated bon bons effort should reward mid to even longer-term cellaring.”

“Discreet but not invisible wood influence sets off the markedly ripe yet still appealingly fresh aromas of black raspberry, dark cherry, spice and plenty of warm earth character. The succulent, dense and mouth coating big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration while exhibiting excellent power and punch on the very firm but not really austere finale. This needs to add depth but I like the balance and vibrancy and this should amply repay extended cellaring.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 94 points
“The wood treatment is certainly evident though far from invasive as it still easily allows the spicier liqueur-like aromas of plum, violet and earth to shine. There is once again fine volume, power, richness and concentration to the bold big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering outstanding length on the complex, balanced and robust finale. At least some patience will be required and this beauty should reward 12+ years of age.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 $219 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 93 points
“There is enough wood to notice but not so much as to intrude on the wonderfully fresh and airy aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, earth and a hint of the sauvage. The seductively textured and lush medium-bodied flavors possess an abundance of energy on the lightly mineral-inflected, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finale that also reflects a touch of youthful austerity. This excellent effort is built-to-age and will require at least 6 to 8 years and should repay 10 to 12.”

La Combe Aux Moines:

Domaine Dominique Gallois La Combe Aux Moines, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2012 $89 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Burghound 92 points
“Outstanding. This is notably ripe with a very fresh and airy nose of cassis and black raspberry along with plenty of Gevrey style earth influence that is trimmed in all but invisible wood. The middle weight flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm tannic spine on the mineral-inflected and mildly austere finish. This robust effort is very Gevrey in character and I would suggest waiting at least 6 to 8 years before popping the cork.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 90-92 points “From a single parcel of vines planted in 1954, the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Combe Aux Moines has a perfumed, feminine bouquet with touches of violet and rose petal, here more assimilated with the new oak than the premier cru. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp opening, good tension and vibrant red berry fruit on the focused, mineral-driven finish. This is very fine and should age well for the next decade once bottled.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois La Combe Aux Moines, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2013 $99 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 92 points
“Outstanding. The reserved but very pretty nose is composed by notes of cool dark berries, earth and a hint of spice. The medium-bodied flavors possess a positively gorgeous mouth feel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the sleekly powerful and intense finish that offers up a refreshing salinity. I like the seamless integration of the tannins and this beauty is quite finely balanced though note that at present it is overtly austere and will definitely need time.”

Domaine Dominique Gallois La Combe Aux Moines, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2014 $99 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Burghound 91-93 points
“Outstanding. As is usually the case this is the best of the Gallois 1ers with its beautifully complex if not especially elegant nose that blends notes of wood with earth, cassis, black cherry and a hint of underbrush. There is excellent power and volume to the slightly less well-detailed big-bodied flavors that also possess evident muscle on the mildly rustic and austere finale that delivers terrific length.”

“Outstanding. This is at once riper yet even more complex with its array of openly sauvage and earthy aromas of forest floor, dark berries and smoke that are trimmed in a background application of wood. As is almost always the case the middle weight plus flavors are bigger, richer and more powerful with an ample amount of dry extract buffering the firm tannic spine on the tightly wound finale. This is also very impressive and while it could certainly be enjoyed after only a few years of bottle age, it should also liberally repay extended keeping. Highly recommended.”

“Outstanding. This too is very deeply hued. Liqueur-like and super-fresh aromas are composed by notes of red and dark currant, earth, violet and a hint of the sauvage. There is outstanding richness and volume to the caressing yet powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent depth and persistence on the muscular, youthfully austere and moderately firm finish. This is a very good CAM and worth checking out.”

“Here the wood treatment is quite toasty and cannot be described as subtle though it again stops short of completely overshadowing the otherwise cool and restrained liqueur-like aromas of dark berries and plenty of sauvage character. There is better density to the muscular and intense medium-bodied flavors that possess evident minerality on the toasty and youthfully austere finish. My sense is that the wood, while prominent today, will ultimately be successfully integrated though it may take a few years.”

“A relatively deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of humus, underbrush, dark currant and herbal tea that evidence hints of the sauvage. There is good richness to the relatively full-bodied medium weight flavors that are shaped by ripe tannins on the balanced, lingering and solidly complex finale that is presently somewhat youthfully austere.”

“There is a discreet touch of wood to the overtly earthy and slightly gamy dark berry fruit and humus suffused aromas. The sleek, velvety and delicious medium weight flavors deliver excellent depth and length on the ever-so-mildly austere finale. This is a very fine Gevrey villages and worth checking out plus it should drink well after only a few years of cellaring.”

“Outstanding. A ripe and deeply pitched nose offers up notes of dark pinot fruit along with plenty of earth and sauvage characters. The middle weight flavors possess both good richness and volume, all wrapped in a lightly mineral-inflected, saline and balanced finish that is a bit less rustic than usual. This excellent effort is well worth considering as it’s an impressive Gevrey villages.”

“Deep ruby color. A pungent nose of reduction and wood spice leads to dense, powerful and punchy medium-bodied flavors that exhibit good minerality before terminating in a youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish that is moderately firm. Good quality here.”

“Outstanding. A background application of wood is present on the very Gevrey-like nose featuring notes of dark currant laced with nuances of humus, the sauvage and underbrush. The sleek, detailed and nicely intense flavors are not particularly concentrated but they are reasonably complex and persistent on the refreshing and lively finish. A quality Gevrey villages.”
