Pierre Bourée:

Vinopolis Super Sale

Looking for a Burgundy that walks the line between elegance and extraction? Look no further than the wines of Pierre Bourée Fils. Though they might not be a household name, it is one of the many historic producers headquartered in the venerable village of Gevrey-Chambertin.  With a history dating back to the mid-19th century, Pierre Bourée has grown its profile through shrewd purchases, including the acquisition of Clos de la Justice (a monopole) as well as a small plot of Premier Cru Les Champeaux, both in Gevrey-Chambertin. Fiercely traditional in their approach, Bourée’s wines are a throwback to a time when cellaring was an expectation, not a luxury.  These are not wines meant for early drinking.  Instead, they reward patience, something of a lost art in today’s purchase and pop wine culture.

With adequate time Bourée’s wines evolve from rustic and esoteric, to silky and timeless.  Think something akin to Rousseau, but vinified by Dujac, if perhaps a little less concentrated.  These are wines for an unabashed Burgundian palate and can be yours now at our deep discounts:

Winery-Cellared Releases from Evesham Wood & Haden Fig

Thirty years ago, Russ Raney founded Evesham Wood and planted the small, dry-farmed and certified organic estate vineyard. Erin Nuccio took over the estate over ten years ago after working for and with Russ at the estate, founding his own original label (Haden Fig) during that time. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land. As a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition (which includes other members such as Cameron, Crowley, Eyrie, Goodfellow, and Sequitur), the dedication to perfection and care for the land shows through. These are graceful, liner wines that will astound for years, as seen in these newly released winery-cellared back vintages.

Newly Arrived from Evesham Wood & Haden Fig:

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points
“Bright red. Ripe red and blue fruits, incense and Asian spices on the deeply perfumed nose. Stains the palate with sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that are firmed by a core of juicy acidity and given a spicy edge by a hint of white pepper. Delivers a solid punch but comes off lively and precise, showing strong blue fruit drive on an impressively long finish framed by harmonious tannins.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 point
s “Vivid red. Assertive raspberry, incense, spicecake and floral scents are complemented by building suggestions of cola and musky earth. Silky and energetic on the palate, offering appealingly sweet red fruit liqueur, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors that possess a compelling blend of depth and vivacity. Shows outstanding clarity and floral drive on a strikingly long finish that features velvety tannins and a hint of Chambord.”

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds 94 points
“Glistening ruby-red. Expansive aromas of raspberry, boysenberry, pungent flowers and Moroccan spices, along with a smoky mineral overtone. Stains the palate with vibrant red and blue fruit preserve, candied violet, allspice and mocha flavors that slowly deepen through the back half. Shows fine definition and floral lift on a very long, smooth finish framed by harmonious tannins.”
Winery note “Le Puits Sec, the gently sloping, east-facing vineyard is tightly-spaced and nestled on a low terrace (300-420 ft. elevation) on the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills ridge. This area, known locally as “Spring Valley”, has already proven to have one of Oregon’s best micro-climates for the production of fine wines from Burgundian and Alsatian varieties. It is here that the rather shallow volcanic basalt soils allow us to achieve the low yields we seek for wines of great intensity and complexity. As well, it is the uniqueness of this “terroir” that gives Le Puits Sec wines their signature.”

Haden Fig Cancilla Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 90 points
“Bright and zingy, featuring crisp tannins and lively acidity to support raspberry and cream notes and a hint of mint in the aroma and flavor profile, dancing deftly on the finish.”
Winery note “With its elevation in the northern Patton valley near Gaston, Cancilla is special. Cool, late-ripening fruit from Ken’s organic, low-yield vineyard contributes to the structure of Haden Fig’s signature Willamette Valley Pinot Noir as well as our Cancilla Vineyard designate Pinot. As it always has. And as I hope it always will.”

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

Illahe Estate Gruner Veltliner, Willamette Valley 2021 750ML ($21.95) $19.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Grüner Veltliner: This Austrian grape takes up an acre and a half at Illahe (one of Oregon’s largest plantings). We got this clone from a Hungarian fighter pilot who defected to the west, bringing his love of Grüner with him to the United States.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Twill Cellars Stormy Morning Vineyard Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Punchy, oily, tropical aromas of lime, ocean air, honeycomb and mango lead the way. Delicate notes, though still with the feel of a lush growing region, are found behind these aromas of lemon grass, and fresh coconut. On the palate, there is a density and structure to the bright exotic flavors, giving it an unctuous yet lifted profile. 25 cases produced 12.9% Alcohol”

Twill Cellars Rosé of Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ML ($21.95) $19 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Enveloping aromas of crushed strawberries, steeped cherries, and bursts of tangerine and rose petals. On the palate, equal parts density and drive, with juicy grapefruit notes and fresh strawberries on full display. Flavors and aromas are marked with a crushed stone like minerality. Lightly crushed and pressed Pinot Noir 80% and Chardonnay 20%. 155 cases produced 12.5% Alcohol”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Twill Cellars Syrah, Oregon 2019 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
25-30% Stormy Morning vineyard, with the remainder from Steelhead Vineyard. 85% whole cluster aged 20 months. Unfined and unfiltered.

Shiba Wichern ‘Willamette Cuvee’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“For 2019 we blended the same 4 vineyards that we did in 2018: Havlin, Nuestro Sueño, Bellevue Cross and Momtazi. The result really highlights my favorite thing about Oregon Pinot noir… The 2019 growing season was a lot cooler and a little slower. The resulting wines are more delicate and refined.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Goodfellow Family Cellars Fir Crest Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2018 750ML ($47.95) $36 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Pale ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Fir Crest Vineyard offers alluring blood orange and cranberries on the nose with accents of cured meats, tobacco leaves and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is soft, juicy and savory with loads of detailed flavors and a very long, very spicy finish.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Goodfellow Family Cellars Fir Crest Vineyard Block Eight Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2019 750ML ($59.95) $53.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“From a single 500 liter puncheon, fermented 100% whole cluster, and aged 19 months. This is the most elegant bottling from the vineyard to date, and it still retains the the dark black/red fruits typical of this vineyard. The stems bring both floral tones, and savory notes that build around the core of dense fruit, and bright acidity draws floral notes and fruit down the palate, and offsets the richness this vineyard always has.”

Kelley Fox Wines ‘Mirabai’ Pinot Noir, McMinnville 2021 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 36 bottles in stock now

Walla Walla

Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley 2019 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 92 points
“Very cool nose, showing green and black olives, dried meat, exotic wild herbs and cassis. A full-bodied red, showing dusty, polished tannins and quite a long finish. Some subtle caramel at the end. Drink or hold.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

France – Burgundy

Domaine Pierre Morey Bourgogne Aligote 2019 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 4 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 88+ points
“The 2019 Bourgogne Aligoté reveals aromas of crisp white peach, green apples, flowers and beeswax, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and lively palate that’s fleshy but incisive. This has turned out nicely and should offer fine aging potential.”

Domaine Pierre Morey Meursault Les Tessons, Côte de Beaune 2019 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 8 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2019 Meursault Les Tessons is very promising, mingling notes of pear, peach and mandarin oil with hints of toasted bread and blanched almonds. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it’s deep and chiseled, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, lively finish.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 91-93 points “The 2019 Meursault Les Tessons has a knockout bouquet of vibrant honeysuckle and lemon thyme aromas flanked by hazelnut. The palate is well balanced with a lovely bitter note that gets the taste buds buzzing. Plenty of energy here, and very harmonious. This is a superb Les Tessons from Anne Morey.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The average price is $159

Domaine Pierre Morey Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2019 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 7 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 89 points
“The 2019 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is superb, bursting with aromas of cherries, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and charming, it’s lively and concentrated, with a pretty core of fruit and refined tannins. This cuvée just seems to go from strength to strength each year.”

Domaine Pierre Morey Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2019 750ML ($149.95) $139 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 89-91 points
“The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a really beautiful bouquet of pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit that bursts from the glass. The palate is tight and less expressive than the nose, but there is certainly good depth and grip. The muscular finish suggests that this will need 3–4 years in bottle.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best price is $147

Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Sainte Claire 2020 750ML ($27.95) $24 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Decanter 93 points
“Some of the vines here are over 70 years old. Even with a reticent, understated nose one can sense the energy and precision in this wine. There’s a lovely, creamy texture on the palate, with bright citrus notes and a long, lingering, savoury, mineral finish. A very fine example of Chablis which would compete very effectively against many a premier cru. Drinking Window 2022 – 2025.”

Catherine et Claude Marechal Bourgogne Cuvee Gravel Rouge 2018 750ML ($39.95) $36 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Located in the villages of Bligny and Pommard, the sub-soil is essentially made up of gravel. It is a wine of medium color intensity and offers an impressive range of aromas, which is characteristic of Pinot Noir. Its natural suppleness and moderate tannins allow it to be drunk quite young while ensuring aging (5 to 10 years). Served between 14 and 16 ° C, it accompanies grilled red meats, roasts, cold meats, etc.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Catherine et Claude Marechal Pommard La Chaniere, Côte de Beaune 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Bill Nanson – Burgundy Report
“Deep colour again. The nose a little tighter, more serious. Wide, great texture some extra structure but no grain, a little salinity too. Depth of finishing flavour – you will benefit from a little patience but there’s fine quality here.”
Winery note “Geologically, the marly Argovian soil is replaced by soft limestones and clays rich in iron. This leads to wines of a deeper color with an intense bouquet of berries, musk and game meat. Its flavors are dominated for a long time by the tannins and it needs to mature a while for the mellowness to appear. This is one of the strongest and most tannic vintages in Burgundy with great aging potential (15 to 20 years). It goes well with quite spicy dishes with a strong flavor, hare pâté, pheasant, wild boar, steak in wine, duck confit, etc.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Catherine et Claude Marechal Savigny-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes, Côte de Beaune 2017 750ML ($59.95) $44.50 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Bill Nanson – Burgundy Report
“Lots of parcels assembled; some 1er cru – Liards, Planchots, Pimentières, Peuillets and more – almost 2 hectares. A bigger bouquet of flowers here. More drive, more freshness, less supple more driving – super texture here – a wine built for speed rather than comfort. Weight of concentrated flavour in the finish though. Yum – no sleeping here!”
Winery note “A red wine with a very elegant and fairly powerful bouquet, supple and discreetly tannic on the palate. This light composition gives it a feminine image. The Premier Crus, more robust, lack neither character nor power and require more prolonged aging. The Savigny wines call for light cuisine, red or white meats, even game birds. Only the premier crus will tolerate a slightly strong sauce.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

France – Loire

The house white of one of Portland’s most well-respected distributors, the highest praise we can offer for such a well-priced wine.
Francois Pinon Vouvray Sec, Loire 2018 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Jason Wilson-Vinous 90 points
“Light yellow. Bright, happy nose, honeysuckle and grapefruit zest. Turns more serious in the mouth, stony but ripe and luscious. Gregarious and easy drinking. Tests the limits of sec with 8 grams per liter residual sugar, but a lovely wine. Aged 6 months in a mix of large and small older barrels.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

France – Champagne

Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Sainte Anne Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Summer 2022 release! 2019-base. Reviews are for 2018-base.
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne is one of the great values in Champagne. Broad and creamy, with high-toned aromatics, the Cuvée Ste.-Anne is a total pleasure bomb. The intensity of the flavors is so beautifully dialed up. Orchard fruit, dried flowers and spice all flesh out effortlessly. More than anything, though, I admire the wine’s balance and raciness. This release is based on 2018. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2021.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points “Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in March 2021 with five grams per liter dosage, Chartogne’s newly released NV Brut Sainte Anne reveals inviting aromas of pear, white peach, fresh bread and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it’s seamless and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, lively acids and a pillowy mousse. It’s a lovely wine that wears its heart on its sleeve.”

France – Rhône

Delas Freres Saint-Joseph Francois de Tournon, Rhône 2019 750ML ($54.95) $44.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92-94 points
“Powerfully scented aromas of fresh black/blue fruits, potpourri, licorice and smoked meat show excellent clarity and vibrant mineral lift. Concentrated boysenberry, cassis and violet pastille flavors are joined by a salty olive note that sneaks in as the wine opens up. Finishes smooth, focused and very long, with broad, fleshy tannins, a hint of smokiness and lingering florality.”
Decanter 92 points “A smooth, elegant style, not as overripe as many this year. Very fine tannins, but a bit drying on the finish. Acidity is marked. This certainly has class, very well made. There’s attention to detail and finesse here. From various plots across the southern part of the appellation. Drinking Window 2022 – 2026.”
Wine Spectator 91 points “Juicy and compact, with a solid core of dark plum and blackberry preserve flavors laced with licorice root and mocha hints. Long, dark finish. Ample toast here, so give it a touch of cellar time to loosen up. Best from 2022 through 2029. 1,400 cases made, 257 cases imported.  –JM”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes – Marquise de la Tourette, Rhône 2019 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Ripe, fresh, bright and pure, with a racy-edged mix of plum sauce, cherry preserves and blackberry paste flavors underscored with mouthwatering anise, apple wood and sweet tobacco notes. The long finish flows nicely, and this flirts with approachable already, but there’s no rush. Drink now through 2034. 2,083 cases made, 175 cases imported. — JM”
Decanter 93 points “Good sense of freshness and intensity with fine tannins and rather high alcohol. Good impact however, and a long finish. Tannins are very fine, and although it doesn’t have the potential complexity of some in this vintage, it has the stature and concentration you would expect. Drinking Window 2025 – 2032.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

France – Bordeaux

Château Lanessan, Haut-Médoc 2017 750ML ($37.95) $33 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 89 points
“The 2017 Lanessan has really developed well over the last year and a half. Far deeper and more complex than it was from barrel, the 2017 possesses terrific mid-palate pliancy and depth. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and dried flowers add lovely shades of nuance to this attractive mid-weight Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Italy – Veneto

Dal Forno Romano Vigneto Monte Lodoletta, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2015 750ML ($499.95) $399 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 100 points
“This is black as pitch in the glass and, yes, there’s a light, tarry edge to the super-concentrated prune, date and currant fruit. But even more interesting are the complex notes of bitter-orange liqueur, aged balsamic, fresh roasting herbs, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, black tea and licorice. The more you decant in advance, the more nuances will emerge. It’s full-boded with huge concentration and lots of chewy tannin that is managing to hold the fruit back for now. This needs plenty of time to develop in the bottle. Just superb. One of the greatest Dal Forno’s ever.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The ultimate statement wine from northern Italy is the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta. The Dal Forno family skipped over the 2014 vintage, and this sunny vintage is worth the wait. Monte Lodoletta is always incredibly high in terms of fruit weight and tannins, but this edition from 2015 appears more integrated in terms of concentration and softer in terms of structure; it’s not that the wine is more accessible. It will hold the line for years and decades to come and promises to age gracefully. This vintage is instead more fleshed out and open-knit. The bouquet peels back with thick layers of black fruit, spice, campfire embers and toasted coffee bean. It’s an expensive bottle for collectors, but you get lots of bang for your buck.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “A rich red, with good tension and energy, displaying tightly meshed flavors of blackberry preserves, fig cake, espresso crema and singed sage coiled around a core of dense but fine tannins. Tea leaf, smoky earth and mineral notes chime on the long and chewy finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina. Best from 2025 through 2045. 1,350 cases made, 250 cases imported. — AN”

Dal Forno Romano Vigneto Monte Lodoletta Valpolicella Superiore, Veneto 2016 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Wilson Daniels importer note
“The Dal Forno family has been making wine since 1983. Located in Val D’Illasi, the estate consists of 65 acres of vines planted to traditional indigenous varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina. The estate vineyards and farm are located where the slopes begin to rise toward the mountains and sit 1,000 feet above sea level. The loose, alluvial soils, meticulous pruning and scrupulous viticultural techniques ensure remarkable-quality grapes. The Dal Fornos use traditional methods to grow the finest fruit, and then employ modern techniques to produce the best wines — classic in expression and modern in purity.”

Italy – Piedmont

Vajra remains one of our favorite producers in the Piedmont.  From top to bottom, the wines are excellent and they’re a real reference point that others are judged against.  The estate has always been good, but seems to have reached another level over the last decade. These are profound wines.

G.D. Vajra Freisa ‘Kye’ Langhe Rosso, Piedmont 2017 750ML ($44.95) $35.50 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2017 Langhe Freisa Kyé is polished, understated and supremely beautiful. Over the last few years, the Vajras have tamed some of the rusticity of Freisa, but there is still plenty of varietal character here. All the elements are very well balanced. Wild cherry, plum, spice, licorice, tobacco, grilled herbs and coffee abound. I would give the 2017 a year or two in bottle, as there is still a bit of edginess to the tannin. Then again, that is Freisa, when it is made with this level of ambition.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points “This wine has developed its own cult following over the years. Named after a local dialectal expression for “who is it,” the 2017 Langhe Freisa Kyè is super intense in this hot vintage. The wine draws upon those vintage conditions to present an extra dark appearance, with aromas of Morello cherry, dried blackberry and spice. I always get a subtle note of black pepper with the popular Freisa grape. The mouthfeel is rich, and you can really sink your teeth into this cheerful and unusual red from Piedmont. 6,000 bottles are hitting the market now.”

G.D. Vajra Moscato d’Asti DOCG, Piedmont 2021 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“Vajra’s Moscato d’Asti is meant to be the quintessence of summer all in one glass. Aromas of peach, apricot, apple, pear, citrus and exotic fruits seem seasoned with sage and other aromatic herbs. This Moscato is produce only with perfectly ripe Muscat grapes that are picked in pristine condition. The very fine but persistent spritz leaves the palate clean and refreshed. Its very low alcohol content makes this the perfect afternoon bubbly.”

G.D. Vajra ‘Clare J.C.’ Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2021 750ML ($24.95) $19 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 92+ points
“The 2021 Nebbiolo Claré J.C. is a deep, translucent ruby color. It wafts up with a dazzling mix of crushed violets, lavender and blackberries tinged with a hint of sour citrus. This splashes across the palate, coming across as energetic and playful in nature, as tart wild berries are motivated by zest acidity, while leaving a coating of minerals and liquid stone in their wake. The 2021 finishes with a bitter twang and crunchiness, like biting into a raw cranberry, yet also remarkably fresh. The Claré J.C. is produced from younger Nebbiolo vines using about 20% whole-cluster fruit to create a throwback-styled wine, one that emphasizes a lighter, more energetic and slightly off-dry character. Enjoy it with a minute chill, but not cold.”

G.D. Vajra Rosabella Rosato, Piedmont 2021 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 90 points
“The 2021 Rosato Rosabella is so understated yet pretty, capturing the eye with its pale pink color, and then the senses with nuances of rose, strawberries and a dusting of spice. It’s soothingly soft, with a pleasant inner sweetness offset by vibrant acidity and citrus-tinged orchard fruits. This leaves the palate completely refreshed, as a salty flourish punctuates the experience quite nicely. The Rosabella is a blend of 85% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 5% Dolcetto.”

Italy – Tuscany

Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points
“Niccolò and Luca De Ferrari assemble their Riserva from the estate’s oldest vines, essentially 3 or 4 parcels that are more than 20 years old. For ageing, they have moved to slightly larger and used casks in order to preserve freshness and grace. The 2016 is indeed deftly proportioned and refined, though with a firm and muscular backbone. It opens with balsamic notes of cedar and rosemary on a backdrop of strawberry. Nuances of mint and leather chime in on the palate, which is layered with succulent fruit. Full, without being heavy, this will take time to reveal all of its charms.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Expressive and harmonious, this red exhibits cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors. Pure and elegant, with an underlying tension and intensity that drives the lingering aftertaste of fruit, stone and earth, showing a hint of wild herbs. Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Mammolo and Colorino. Best from 2022 through 2038. 4,200 cases made, 800 cases imported.”
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Editor’s Choice. Wild berry, blue flower, crushed herb, camphor and a whiff of tobacco mingle together on this vibrant red. Made with 85% Sangiovese as well as Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo, the radiant palate is loaded with finesse, delivering raspberry compote, Marasca cherry, licorice and Asian spice. Elegant, fine-grained tannins provide the framework while bright acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2021–2031.”

Wine & Spirits 93 points
“This is a bright and lifted expression of sangiovese, impressive for its freshness despite a warm and dry growing season. Its red cherry flavors are precise and focused, energized by notes of orange peel and infused with brisk acidity.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Polished and savory, this medium-bodied red opens with aromas of camphor, wild berry and new leather. On the linear palate, taut tannins accompany juicy Marasca cherry and licorice. Drink through 2025. -Kerin O’Keefe”

Restocked!
R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2001 750ML ($219.95) $199 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2001 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva is the follow-up of the 1995. There is a sense of harmony and elegance, of nuance and subtleness that wasn’t quite the same in the Bosconia, as comparing both wines is inevitable. They started picking the red grapes the 15th of October, and the last grapes were picked the 29th of October with good weather. The grapes ripened properly and thoroughly, and the wine has great balance for a long aging in bottle. This is 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo that fermented in their 153-year-old oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in used barrels for 10 years. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and 6.4 grams of acidity (tartaric). The nose shows young (tasting it blind, you’d guess a 10-year old wine, not a 20-year-old wine!). It has a nose of sweet spices, underbrush and cigar ash, somewhat balsamic, bramble fruit with perfect ripeness, integrated and young but starting to show some tertiary complexity. The palate is velvety and medium-bodied, with fine-grained, chalky tannins denoting a limestone soil that brings finesse and texture and a sapid, tasty, almost salty finish. This is going to make a beautiful bottle of old Rioja in 30 years’ time! 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled after being fined with egg whites in July 2012.”
James Suckling 97 points “Wow. This is really something on the nose, offering ripe plums that are highlighted with old and used leather, walnut and cedar, reminiscent of the interior of a fine vintage sports car. Full-bodied with very fine tannins and delicious, ripe fruit that continues on for minutes. Tile and dark berry at the end. Still tight and fresh for the vintage. A great wine. Drink or hold.”

2018 Scavino

Arriving in July

Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names. Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist. Rich and powerful in their youth, their true greatness develops after time in the cellar – something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers. Complex and nuanced upon release, the wines are built to age. With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today.

2018 Releases Arriving in July:

Paolo Scavino Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“Vivid aromas of red berries and roses follow though to a medium-bodied palate, where fine tannins provide a lightly firm bed for fresh fruit. The lighter, brighter style of this is true to the character of the vintage, but here it’s been well-handled. All in balance. Try from 2024.”

Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 94 points
“An attractive nose, with dense floral notes to color the ripe red berries and cherries. Hints of white nuts and apricot skins add to the appeal. The same enticing fruit mix on the palate, too, with an easy bed of fine but loosely knit tannin that adds a luxurious note to the mouth-feel. All in all, this is quite an extravagant Barolo with loads to like now, but should age gracefully. Best from 2024.”

“Very floral nose with bright red berries, some cedary oak and and an exotic hint of musk. Medium-to full-bodied with intense, spicy fruit flavors against a backdrop of lightly firm and lightly grainy tannins that together produce surprising length. Well poised and showing good pedigree, despite the difficult vintage. This will age nicely, but is great to taste now. Try from 2025.”

Paolo Scavino Carobric, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“A little reticent on the nose for now, showing only some oak-induced dry spice. But it opens up on the palate to reveal a bright, focused core of fresh red berries and firm, fine-grained tannins. Well structured for a 2018, but lacks the inner depth and warmth of happier vintages. Try from 2024.”

James Suckling 94 points
“Lovely, inviting nebbiolo nose with fresh and dried cherries, colored with pungent, sous-bois notes of dried roses and truffley mushrooms. Full-bodied, yet very tight and fresh with a solid tannin framework. Super-fresh and flavorful, but will this will need some time to soften a little. Solid wine for the vintage. Try from 2025.”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points
“Compact and really focused, with red berries, dried porcini and brighter floral notes. Medium-bodied with a relatively light but firm tannin framework. The flavors remain enticing and fresh. The lighter overall structure reflects the vintage, but there’s room for expansion here, given time. Try from 2024.”

Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($249.95) $199 pre-arrival special
James Sucklig 100 points
“Wow! There’s so much going on here. The nose presents an intense mix of dried cherry and red-berry fruit and rose petals, together with mild spice, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco dried apricot and dried and fresh nuts. Much more if you dig in. Full-bodied, super-relaxed palate that is the perfect display case for all the complex fruit character. The tannins are dense but seamless, never displaying any angular edge. Super-long and super concentrated, this is hard to fault. Yet, despite all the seeming extravagance, it remains a composed red with a long life ahead of it. Drink at your leisure.”

Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“Located in Roddi, the 2017 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is marked by perfume of chalky earth, violets, and kirsch. The palate moves into dark fruits, with ripe currant, sweet tobacco, and tannins that emerge on the finish. Hold for 2-4 years and drink 2024-2042. Helmed by fourth generation winemaker Elisa Scavino, the estate owns and manages 30 hectares spanning eight of the 11 communes of the Barolo region and is based in Castiglione Falletto. Since 2007, they have implemented the use of a netted, submerged cap cylindrical system developed by Elisa’s father, Enrico, which achieves a delicate extraction during fermentation. They have moved to slower, longer fermentation periods, and as of 2018 will only be utilizing large casks. In the vineyard, there is great attention to the compression of the soils, creating a healthy ecosystem rich in oxygen and microorganisms and a sustainable approach.”
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2017 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is laced with succulent black cherry, mocha, licorice, dark spice and lavender. The Bricco Ambrogio is usually a bit juicier, while the 2017 is decidedly on the lighter side.”

Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($99.95) $88 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 95+ points
“The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “The 2017 Barolo Bric Del Fiasc has pure aromatics of stony graphitic earth, licorice, violets, and cherry liqueur. The palate is balanced, with a full structure, noted by dried apricot, blood orange, and cinnamon. The Bric del Fiasc has both floral lift as well as noble structure and has a refreshing nature. Drink 2024-2046.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Aromatic, this red offers rose, plum, cherry, licorice, leather and spicy tobacco notes. Firm, yet surprisingly open and balanced at this stage. Remains fresh and long on the savory finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. —B.S.”

Paolo Scavino Carobric, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2017 Barolo Carobric is one of the standouts in this range, as it often is. It has an extra dimension of depth and volume that works so well here. Sweet red cherry, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, anise and brambly notes build as this striking, expressive Barolo shows off its considerable charm. What a pretty wine it is.”

Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is classy and polished right out of the gate. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are some of the nuances that open in the glass. Even with all of its immediacy, the 2017 has plenty of tannin. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. The 2017 is undoubtedly an attractive wine, but its best days lie ahead.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “From the northern MGA within Verduno, the 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is soft and floral, with crushed violets, ripe black raspberry, and licorice candy. The palate is drying, with cherry pit, sweet herbs, and turned earth. Ripe yet balanced, drink or hold 2022-2040.”

Paolo Scavino Prapo, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 95+ points
“The 2017 Barolo Prapò is yet another stellar wine in this range. Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 94 points
“Here is another rookie in the lineup for Paolo Scavino. The Ravera vineyard was purchased in 2015, at 2.7 hectares and about 360 meters in altitude. It is their highest vineyard and the last to be harvested every year. This east-facing parcel is never too hot, always showing cooler-climate conditions than the others, with fine tannins and a good dose of acidity. The 2015 Barolo Ravera is a very tight and and precise wine, with notes of exotic tea that follow blackberry, dried cherry and licorice. This is a great new addition to the Scavino portfolio at this time of important changes for the winery.”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2017 Barolo Ravera is dazzling. Deep, potent and virile, the 2017 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, smoke, game, lavender and licorice convey a real impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s overall feel. This powerhouse Barolo is magnificent today in a sort of old-school meets new-school style.”

Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($219.95) $199 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.”
James Suckling 95 points “Aromas of white truffles and dried red cherries here with an earthy nuance that makes for a complex and compelling nose. The palate has a deep and dense shape and delivers a wide array of rich cherry and plum flavors. Some handy spice here, too. Drink or hold.”
