More than just a name, these wines have shaped the very fabric of my understanding of Barolo. I’ll never forget my first taste of a Cogno wine sewn from the Ravera vineyard. Intense licorice, amaretto cherry, mint, and that unmistakable aroma of tar that all the books I’d read had told me I’d find. This might be one of the greatest single vineyards in all of Barolo and the Cogno family is it greatest keeper.

Founded by the legendary Elvio Cogno, the winery today is guided by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore, who have carried the torch with an unwavering commitment to authenticity.

As we climb the ladder, there are small-production wines from rare grapes (Freisa) and the cellar-defender Barbera d’Abla selections and village-level Barolos. At the top end, we find single-vineyard Barolos including the Ravera, which goes for triple digits from others addresses. The Bricco delle Viole is the highest vineyard in Barolo, named for the violets that blossom across its southern exposure.

This tricky-to-pronounce region in the north of Burgundy is home to some of the region’s most prized vineyards and has been for centuries. The monks of Saint-Vivant first planted the vines in this tiny commune. Today, while Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is its most famous producer (and most expensive), there are still exquisite wines to be found at far more affordable prices.

The south of France is home to the Languedoc-Roussillon: a collection of unique sub-regions with distinctive and delicious wines. Generally speaking, the climate is warm with the Mediterranean providing the most significant influence to its weather.
 
This is the home of some of France’s best values in wine and some of the more modern-influenced styles. Subregions have stricter controls on grape types and styles, but many winemakers bottle under the various IGP designations. (IGP tells you where the wine in from but has looser restrictions for winemakers, which allows them to use alternative grape varieties and winemaking techniques.) It’s also where winemakers from more established regions go to stretch their wings, as seen by Chapoutier and Rene Rostaing.
