Scavino

Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names. (Though this estate, fortunately, has yet to climb the heights of pricing.) Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist. Rich and powerful in their youth, the wines are built to age. Their true greatness develops after time in the cellar – something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers.

With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the Scavino wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today.

Reverdito Barolo

“The land is our origin, the beginning of everything. It is the most important thing we have.” -Michele Reverdito.

Established in 2000 by brother and sister team Michele and Sabina Reverdito, La Morra’s Reverdito Winery is a founding member of the Piedmont Green Experience project. As one of over 70 members of the project, they are dedicated to organic, eco-friendly practices in their cru holdings in La Morra, Serralunga, and Monforte, as well as well as the commune of Verduno. Their respect for the land shows in every bottle they produce and has put them on the map as one of Piedmont’s fastest rising stars.

L’Aventure

French winemaker Stephan Asseo founded the tiny and beloved estate of L’Aventure in the 1990s. He settled on Paso Robles for his estate due to its ideal condition for Rhone varieties with a dash of Bordeaux varieties, where he cut his teeth winemaking. He works exclusively with estate-grown fruit from the rolling hills that surround the winery. Aging takes place in the recently dug caves. These maintain a stable temperature and humidity ideal for the slumbering wine without additional energy expenditure. The resulting wines from the gorgeously appointed bottles are stunning. Bold, but with a classic profile of lifted acidity, these show off Paso Robles with panache.

The Graillot Family of Wines

The Graillot clan is synonymous with the northern Rhone region of Croze-Hermitage. After working at the legendary Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, Alain Graillot came home to Crozes-Hermitage in 1985. Until his recent passing, Alain used the same techniques that have made Dujac wines iconic. Practices include chemical-free farming, use of whole clusters during fermentation and long élevage in old oak.

Graillot’s two sons Maxime and Antoin have continued in his footsteps. Maxime, whose Domaine des Lises bottling is included in this sale, farms his parcels next to his father’s estate and follows the same principals of organic farming with no herbicide or pesticide usage at all.

Merkelbach

We adore the wines of Weingut Alfred Merkelbach. They set the curve for the term “old-school,” having made their wines in similar style for almost 70 years. These wines capture the delicacy and etherealness of Riesling like few other wines we’ve tried. Terry Theise, when importing the wines for Skurnik, described their wines as “like VAPING Mosel Riesling.”

The tiny estate boasts mostly ancient (and sometimes ungrafted) vines grown on steep terraces along the Mosel River in Urzig and in Kinheim. When most of the Ürziger Würzgarten vineyards were replanted during the re-alignment of the vineyards, Merkelbach’s vines remained on original rootstock.
