“Luca Sanjust of Fattoria Petrolo has long been working with extended skin macerations, amphorae and a non-interventionist’s approach. He is a historian of local wine culture and ampelography. Indeed, he is one of the most vocal proponents of the recently established Val d’Arno di Sopra appellation. These are the best new releases I have yet tasted from Petrolo.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
In 2011, Italy approved one of Tuscany’s newest appellations: the Val d’Arno di Sopra (also written as Valdarno di Sopra). The quality of the region has been known for centuries: in 1715, a Medici duke decreed it one of only four regions notable for its high quality wine grapes.
Petrolo is the most notable producer of these wines, drawing inspiration from ancient traditions of their regions and their belief that great wine is “nature as dreamed by man.”

“Founded in 1959 with a mere two hectares, today the Domaine Bernard Defaix consists of fully 27 hectares (certified organic since 2009) whose fruit is supplemented with purchased grapes. Much of the production is fermented and matured in stainless steel, though the Chablis Vieilles Vignes and several of the premiers crus, as well as the Grand Cru Bougros and Vaudésir, see varying percentages of wood, the bulk of it used. The wines are lively and incisive, with good depth and concentration…” -William Kelley, Wine Advocate
There’s not much more to add to William Kelley’s succinct and glowing write up on Domaine Bernard Defaix, other than noting that the estate is constantly working to improve and that they’re very open with their thought process.

Long time readers will know that Andre Clouet is the closest thing we have to a house Champagne. It’s consistently the best bang for the buck in bubbles from the tippy top tête de cuvée to the not-to-be-overlooked non-vintage.
Never heard of them? Welcome, new friend, to the Vinopolis Newsletter! Andre Clouet is a small-but-mighty Champagne House headed by the rather-eccentric Jean-François Clouet. The House is known for many things, including crafting some of the best values to be found from their Grand Cru home village of Bouzy (the most fun Champagne village name!). The wines are fantastic, loved by staff and bought in bulk by savvy shoppers (oh, heck, and by the staff, too).
