Eyrie Vineyards Original Vines Reserve Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2013 750ML ($59.95) $46 pre-arrival special
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “The oldest Chardonnay vines in the Willamette Valley, planted in 1965, create a spicy, textural, refined wine with tremendous length and detail. All the wine was aged in neutral wood, which shines a light on the beautiful fruit, with green apple, almonds, and hints of butter and vanilla.”

The Eyrie Vineyards ‘Outcrop Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Outcrop comes from vines located higher than the Sisters Vineyard, on a tier of basalt that juts out of the hill. It has a wonderful and very expressive bouquet of blackberry, minerals, sandalwood and cloves that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin right from the start. This is a little masculine at the moment, clamming in toward the tertiary finish with a long, persistent, marine-influenced aftertaste of Japanese nori coming through. Superb.”

The Eyrie Vineyards Rolling Green Pinot Noir, Oregon 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Brilliant red. Sexy, expansive aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri, spicecake and minerals, with a hint of blood orange adding vivacity. Then darker in profile on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and rose pastille flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Dusty tannins give shape and grip to the long, incisive finish, which features a hint of cherry pit and echoing minerality. This very nicely balanced pinot shows the energy of a top ’11 and the flavor intensity that marks ’12.” JR

Organically grown by our team from nearly 50 year old vines. Harvested October 21, 2011. This wine was gently whole cluster pressed and aged on its lees for six months before bottling. Johan Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2013 ($31.95) $27 special
Winery note “The goal behind the Estate bottling is to make a wine that is representative of the whole farm. We achieve this on a micro scale by selecting small parcels of fruit from every combination of rootstock/scion, slope, soil profile, and vine age on the property. We then vinify, age, and bottle this wine separately from our other lots. This bottling is always the most representative of the growing year as it incorporates fruit from the whole farm. It is the most accurate representation of Johan Vineyards’ terroir.”

White Rose Black Thorn Cuvee Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Winery’s note: “The objective of our winemaking is to present the terroir of our vineyards in a pure, focused style, enabling an expression of elegance and clarity that only great vineyards can achieve. Aromatic complexity and depth of flavors that demonstrate varietal typicality are the fundamental goals for all our wines.”

White Rose Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special
Winery’ note: “
Planted in 1980 to own-rooted Pommard clone pinot noir, the 10-acre White Rose Vineyard is one of the oldest and most storied vineyards in Oregon. Planted on east-southeast facing slopes of volcanic Jory soils in the heart of the Dundee Hills, the vines consistently produce fruit of great character and complexity. The vineyard sits at the top of the hill at 870 feet elevation, overlooking much of the Willamette Valley. This hilltop location allows us to maximize “hang time”, the length of the time the clusters are maturing on the plant, which results in greater flavor development while maintaing balanced sugars and acid.”

Johan Pinot Noir – Nils Reserve Pinot Noir 2008 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Bright ruby. Black raspberry, cherry-cola and spicecake aromas show very good clarity and a suave hint of fresh rose. Bright and incisive on the palate, offering tangy red and dark berry flavors and a late note of blood orange. Finishes spicy, energetic and focused. This lithe, sexy pinot clocks in at 12.8% alcohol.” JR
From the winery: “The 2008 Pinot Noir – Nils Reserve – is made entirely from estate grown fruit. This is a barrel-‐selected blend made from grapes grown in block 1, 2, 4A, 5B and 7A – a selection of four Dijon clones (114, 115, 667 and 777). The grapes were fermented (both primary and malolactic) using exclusively native yeast, with approximately 50% whole-‐cluster. The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels; 40% were new.
“In line with the goals of Johan Vineyards, this Pinot Noir is made in a classic style, with a focus on balance, complexity and elegance. It clearly represents the characters and nuances of Johan Vineyards as well as the 2008 growing-‐season. After a cool spring, resulting in natural low yields, this vintage extended deep into October making it possible to let the fruit slowly mature. Rich and concentrated flavors were developed at unusually low sugar levels. 330 cases produced.”

K Vintners B. Leighton Petit Verdot, Olsen Brothers Vineyard, Yakima Valley 2012 750ML ($89.95) $69 special
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The star of the show, Leighton’s 2012 Petit Verdot Olsen Vineyard (100% Petit Verdot aged 22 Months in 50% new French oak) is still painfully backward and unevolved, yet has tons of personality and potential. Loaded with notions of dark fruits, peach pit, creamy licorice and violet-like aromas and flavors, it’s full-bodied, thrillingly concentrated, yet fresh and elegant, with plenty of focus to its texture and length on the finish. It’s a brilliant wine. Give it 2-3 years and drink bottles over the following decade.” JD
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 92 points “(made entirely from whole, uncrushed berries): Deep, saturated ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, crystallized blackberry, iron, dried flowers and licorice. Sweet, supple and pliant in the mouth, with lovely saline soil tones complicating the plush flavors of red berries, flowers, minerals and spices. Already long on personality, this wine finishes with wonderfully smooth, horizontal tannins and terrific length. Incidentally, I scored this wine 93+? last year, but the wine had not yet been bottled. It’s a lot more open to inspection today.”
K Vintners B. Leighton Syrah, Olsen Brothers Vineyard, Yakima Valley 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 94+? points “(vinified entirely with whole clusters and aged entirely in puncheons, 25% new): Healthy dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, minerals, smoked meat, fresh blood and black pepper; shows the wildness I associate with Cornas from a generation ago. Silky, sappy and pure on the palate, offering superb intensity and rocky minerality to the vibrant flavors of black fruits, cured meat, orange rind and spices. Very long on the aftertaste, with suave tannins disappearing into the wine’s fruit. A stunner.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “Seeing 18 months in 20% new oak, the 2012 Syrah Olsen Vineyard exhibits lots of meaty, dark fruits, olive, damp earth and distinct minerality to go with a full-bodied, nicely concentrated style on the palate. There’s lots of classic Syrah olive and meatiness here, and while it’s already approachable, it will have 10-12 years of overall longevity.” JD
Januik Weinbau Vineyard Cabernet Franc, Wahluke Slope 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93+ points “Good dark red. Black cherry, cassis and graphite minerality on the nose. Suave, fine-grained and nicely filled in, offering penetrating lift to its dark fruit and floral flavors. This classically dry Cabernet Franc boasts terrific flavor intensity without any impression of weight. Finishes vibrant and very long, with lovely lingering clarity of fruit. A splendid example of Washington Cabernet Franc. All of these 2012 reds have alcohol in the low 14s, says Januik.”

Case-12 Januik Klipsun Vineyard Merlot, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($359.95) $319 special (that’s only $26.58/bottle!)
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93+ points “(100% Merlot): Bright, dark red. Dark fruits, graphite, mocha, menthol and musky oak on the compelling nose, along with a hint of caraway seed. Alluring pliant, elegant wine with beautifully integrated acidity framing the dark plum and cassis flavors. Conveys a rare combination of intensity and finesse of texture. Finishes with fine-grained tannins–especially for a wine from Klipsun vineyard–and outstanding length. This stunning Merlot spent just seven days on its skins, according to Januik.”

Araujo Estate Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($99.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard represents a departure from previous editions, as the current team is seeking a style of Sauvignon built on phenolic intensity, energy and tension, all elements that will be new to readers who drink the estate’s Sauvignon Blanc on a regular basis. Among other things, the Sauvignon now spends more time in the cellar than it used to. Hints of lime, citrus and white flowers add nuance on the saline-infused finish. It will be interesting to see how this intriguing white develops in bottle. The 2013 was done 65% in stainless steel, 20% in oak and 15% in concrete eggs.” AG
Edmeades Zinfandel, Mendocino County 2013 750ML ($19.95) $14 special
“Offering plenty of Zinny character, it’s dry and brisk in mouth-cleansing acidity, with soft tannins and rich flavors of dusty baking spices, blackberry purée, cherry compote, cola, shaved dark chocolate, red licorice and a savory coating of toasted cedar wood. The addition of a small percentage of Petite Sirah (10%) and Syrah (4%) contributes complexity. A great accompaniment to barbecue, game, roasted chicken, stews and lasagna.”– Winery Notes

Case-12 Snowden Vineyards The Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($599.95) $479 special (that’s only $39.92/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Snowden’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch is bold, delicious and juicy. Black cherry, plum, licorice and smoke all meld together effortlessly. The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but the Ranch Cabernet is going to drink well with minimal cellaring next to most wines of the vintage.” AG

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Charmes, Meursault Premier Cru 2011 1.5L ($199.95) $149 special
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 91 points “The 2011 Meursault Les Charmes wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and nuance. There is plenty of Charmes richness and depth in the glass. At the same time, the wine’s structural elements are front and center, at least today. The firm, slightly dry finish suggests the fruit may have been brought in a little early.” AG

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Les Perrieres, Meursault Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 92 points “The 2011 Meursault Les Perrières is surprisingly rich and viscous for Perrières. Honey, almonds, mint, dried flowers and dried pears flesh out in the glass. With air the wine’s minerality becomes more apparent. Ideally, the 2011 is best left alone for at least another year or two to allow all the elements to come together.” AG
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Santenots, Meursault Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 93 points “The 2011 Meursault Les Santenots is first and foremost a wine of texture. Gracious and layered in the glass, the 2011 is endowed with considerable personality. White stone fruits, flowers anise and crushed rocks emerge over time, but the overall impression is one of pure silk. The style is rich, deep and resonant, while the balance is first-rate.” AG

FRANCE-BEAUJOLAIS
Domaine Marcel Lapierre Raisins Gaulois, Vin de France 2014 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Wine Spectator – “A crisp, light-bodied red, with a distinctive profile of fresh earth, raspberry, dried herb and licorice drop notes lined with a tangy edge. Zesty, mineral-laced finish. For fans of the style. Drink now. ”
Coudert Pere ‘Clos de la Roilette’ Fleurie, Beaujolais 2013 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Importer note “The Clos de la Roilette, in the village of Fleurie, covers nine hectares of one of the best slopes in the Beaujolais Crus. The clos has an eastern exposure, borders the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, and produces wines that are beautiful when young and have the capacity to age 5-10 years, depending on the vintage. Semi-carbonic maceration with submerged hat, temperature control and native yeasts, then aged in large oak foudres. Vines are 30-40 years old grown in manganese granite and clay soil.”
Christian Ducroux ‘Exspectatia’ 2014 750ml ($24.95) $21.90 special
Vinopolnote: Just about as old-school Beaujolais as you can get – organic farming for 35 years, certified biodynamic for 30; he produces his own fertilizer and plows with help from his horse. Based in Regnie, his wines are fresh, light, and wild.

FRANCE-BORDEAUX
Chateau La Peyre, Haut-Medoc 2012 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Importer’s note: “The vineyards cover about 1.2 hectares and sit on gravel-infused soil. The vines are of an average age of 25 years (as of 2011). The grape blend for the Haut-Médoc is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. After a manual harvest, the alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks; at the conclusion of that phase of the vinification, the wine is racked into small barrels to clarify for an additional year before bottling.”

Chateau Moulin de Tricot, Margaux 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Importer’s note: “This small jewel of an estate produces a mere 15,000 bottles of Margaux per annum. We are fortunate to have access to at least 3600 bottles per year (plus a small number of magnums and double magnums!) of this superb wine. Heavily dependent on Cabernet Sauvignon (at least three-fourths of the cuvée), this wine has a distinguished structure and complex flavors that beg for additional aging in the bottle. The elevage in barrel extends for eighteen months at which point the wine is bottled without filtration.”
FRANCE-RHONE
Eric Texier Cotes du Rhone 2013 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Importer note “Eric Texier became a winemaker after a first career and without any family background in vines or wines. After giving up the idea of buying vineyards, which was too costly a proposition for a beginner with his ambitions, he started a small négoce where he selected particularly interesting vineyard plots and the sincere, hard-working farmers who grew the healthy grapes he wanted to buy and vinify. He rediscovered nearly forgotten areas of ancient fame, like Brézème in the northern Côtes-du-Rhône, and nurtured relationships with people who tend their vines with passion and care. Like all good winemakers, Eric strongly believes that wines are made in the vineyard, and that his work, after the harvest, consists in following the lead of the vintage, and accompanying the wines so they fulfill their potential. For his red wines, he does the same sorting at harvest, 100% destemming most of the time, bringing the grapes to the press by conveyer belts, cold maceration under a CO2 blanket for aromatic extraction, natural yeasts, pigeage and remontage twice a day, during maceration and fermentation. The temperatures are controlled not to exceed 34 degrees C (93F), aging is done in 2 to 5 year old barrels of 228L and demi-muids of 450L, with only limited use of new oak, no filtration and egg white fining only when necessary.”
Domaine du Trapadis Rasteau, Rhone 2013 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Winemaker’s notes: 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Carignan. It’s aged in cement tank for approximately 18 months. Certified biologique in 2010; Vine age averaging 35 years, with some planted in 1922.
FRANCE-ALSACE
Kuentz-Bas Riesling Tradition, Alsace 2013 750ML ($21.95) $16 special
Ian D’agato – Vinous 89 points “Pale, bright straw-yellow color. Lemon, orange, pepper and pungent herbs on the nose. Bright and juicy in the mouth, with clean flavors of grapefruit pith, oregano and talc. Finishes firm-edged and citrussy, with the lemony acidity providing persistent finishing zip. This easygoing wine will go great with oysters and shellfish in general. “This wine was hard work because our growers didn’t want to wait to harvest given the forecast of heavy October shower activity,” Totolli told me, “so we had to reassure them continuously and let them know we were behind them.””
ITALY-PIEDMONT
De Forville Langhe Arneis, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Wine Enthusiast 89 points “Full-bodied but refreshing, it boasts juicy green apple, white pear and mineral sensations. The creamy palate is brightened by fresh acidity, giving this a clean, fresh finish. Sip as an apéritif or pair with pasta topped with vegetable sauces.” WE
De Forville Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Winery note: “Obtained from vineyards cultivated in a wide area at the border with the Barolo and Barbaresco districts, this wine is immediately ready to drink, but it is also suitable for ageing. After five years in the bottle it still preserves its best features. Good structure, with a tannic and spicy finish.”
Enzo Boglietti Barolo Fossati, Barolo DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92 points “Deep, dark, bright red. Wild plum, smoked meat, tobacco, truffle, mocha and leather on the expressive nose. Silky, sweet and thick, but with nicely integrated acidity giving shape to this very ripe wine. Finishes with dusty, slightly granular tannins and good lift.”

Castello di Ama Haiku Toscana IGT 2010 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Beautifully vivid and nuanced in the glass, the 2010 Haiku impresses for its purity and clarity. Sweet tobacco, licorice, mint, cedar and dark red stone fruits are all woven together in a fabric of sensual elegance and total finesse. The 2010 is gorgeous today, but my sense is it also has enough pedigree to develop nicely in bottle. The style is built on grace and finesse.” AG

ColleMassari ‘Lombrone’, Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $39 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2008 Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva Lombrone is gorgeous. Crushed flowers, spices, sweet red cherries and herbs waft from the glass from this delicate, beautifully scented Sangiovese. This is a feminine, gracious style, but it works, and nicely.” AG

ColleMassari ‘ColleMassari’ Montecucco Riserva 2010 750ML ($37.95) $24 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2010 Montecucco Riserva Colle Massari bursts from the glass with an exciting melange of dark red cherry, plum, tobacco, smoke and licorice notes. Rich, layered and exuberant, the 2010 nevertheless possesses remarkable energy and tension to support all of the fruit. This is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from Colle Massari.” AG

ColleMassari ‘ColleMassari’ Montecucco Riserva 2011 750ML ($37.95) $24 special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Smoke, tar, licorice, black cherries and plums meld together in the 2011 Montecucco Rosso Riserva Colle Massari. In this vintage, the Rosso Riserva is especially intense and brooding. Still, there is no shortage of personality. The aromatics could use a bit more focus, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers so much pleasure.” AG

Pian dell’Orino ‘Vigneti del Versante’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Pian dell’Orino ‘Vigneti del Versante’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 1.5L ($249.95) $219 special
Antonio Galloni 97 points “The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigne del Versante from Pian dell’Orino is one of the most powerful wines of the night. Rich, dense and explosive, the Vigne del Versante Amiata is a wine for the patient. Although most 2010 Brunellos have not begun to shut down, this is one wine that is a bit less expressive than it was the last time I tasted it. Still, the potential here is both significant and evident.” AG
Stella di Campalto Podere San Giuseppe Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2009 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 92 points “The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is quite open-knit, radiant and accessible. Raspberry jam, white pepper, flowers, mint and sweet spices hove on the palate in a decidedly mid-weight Brunello that emphasizes grace and agility. The persistent, textured finish is striking. It will be interesting to see if the 2009 puts on weight in bottle, or if it remains the slghtly fragile, fleeting wine it is today. Stella di Campalto’s wines never lack intrigue, that is for sure.” AG
ITALY-FRIULI
Stanislao Radikon Pinot Grigio Venezia Giulia IGT, Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2013 750ML ($47.95) $41.90 special
Winery note “Radikon philosophy in the vineyards is the same as in the cellar: since the early Nineties we have not used chemical manures, but only organic products, allowed by the Code for organic farming. New vineyard systems are very dense (7000 – 10000 vines per hectare) so that the grapevine is forced to produce a smaller amount of increased-quality grape. The vineyards in the farming business (about 12 ha) are laying on steeply sloping soil, typical for the Collio Goriziano, with excellent South, South-east exposure. On this type of soil almost all farming works are hand-made.”
Importer note “2 weeks of skin maceration. Aged in barrel one year, then bottled and released.”
Stanislao Radikon ‘Slatnik’ Venezia Giulia IGT, Friuli-Venezia Giulia 2013 750ML ($47.95) $41.90 special

Wine Enthusiast 90 points “This luminous sparkler opens with aromas of jasmine, orange blossom and white peach. The crisp, refreshing palate doles out green apple, Bartlett pear and white almond alongside vibrant acidity and a silky mousse.”

AUSTRIA
Schloss Gobelsburg Lamm Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2014 750ML ($79.95) $49 special
Terry Theise notes “Sensational fragrance! Richly, sweetly LAMM. The palate is taut, powerful, markedly spicy; it’s the 2006 this most resembles yet the alc is much lower, between 13-13.5%. Early days yet for this. Lamm as a rule is buckwheat-y, rusky, savory but not thick, like a vegetable-veal stock with barley, yet oddly also like lamb itself. (“Lamm” doesn’t mean lamb, but is rather a dialect word for “loam.”) It is a great wine though virtually without fruit per se. Its poise of gloss and power, intensity and outline, mass and transparency are emblems of the paradox without which no wine is truly great.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Schloss Gobelsburg Steinsetz Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Terry Theise notes “This ever-deepening wine has a lysergic moment in ’14; high-toned, almost hoppy aroma, with notes of lima beans and dill; picked the 2nd week in November; the palate is wonderfully juicy, like extra-virgin grapeseed oil; the fruit is “sweet” and the umami is ludicrously spicy. The site sits on a plateau on ancient Danube riverbed stones, and for many years it was radishy and stinging, as if it were fined with scree and stirred with a peppermint stick. A little of that character still remains, but the older vines (now around 15) have sunk roots deep enough to reach the aquifer, and the wines too are deeper.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Gobelsburger Riesling, Kamptal 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Terry Theise notes “Lovely fragrance, verbena and a kind of charming herbal funk; a bit of the ambient-botrytis of ’14 is here, and the overall effect is drier and twiggier than its GV sibling.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Zobinger Heiligenstein Riesling Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 92 points “Scents of iris and jasmine, apple and apricot set the stage for a generously juicy, subtly interactive performance on a silken palate. Cooler in personality and in its floral/herbal shadings and more aloof than the corresponding Gaisberg, this nonetheless introduces considerable piquancy and chew of fruit pit, pip and skin in its sustained, mouthwateringly saline finish.”
Terry Theise notes “I’d tasted at Alzinger this morning, and yet I wrote “This is the most sensually extravagant of all the great Rieslings tasted today,” a day I wrote three plusses for an astonishing seven different wines. This masterpiece starts out deceptively gauzy, with notes of jasmine, white tea and cox-orange pippins, but then suddenly it is insanely intricate, almost incomprehensible; verbena and aloe vera, chartreuse, lemon zest, semolina and ginger, and an astonishing finish you want to take home with you.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Zobinger Heiligenstein Riesling Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 93 points “An alluring freesia-like perfume and cooling scents of green herbs would have had me guessing that this was Heiligenstein. Intimations of black tea, ginger and pepper translate, on a glossy, glycerol-rich, lusciously citric and peachy palate, into an invigorating picture of piquancy, cut and clarity. A similarly stimulating hint of caramelized parsnip puts one in mind of Grüner Veltliner. This finishes with memorable vibrancy and verve not to mention sheer persistence. As with some other vintage exemplars, it is an unusually forward Gaisberg, and happily the perfume and dynamic complexity it exhibited from cask in the weeks before bottling hasn’t dimmed.”
Terry Theise notes “This normally somewhat aloof Riesling was unusually overt in 2013, from all of the three growers who supply it to me. This began somewhat lunar and still, at least at first, but the palate was white-flowery and salty and bordered on brash, and then the aromas brightened with air into freesia and peony, and that salty-herbal attack was anything but demure.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Renner Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 95 points “From Renner’s geologically complex Urgestein mix characteristically emerges a Grüner Veltliner of comparable complexity that’s indescribable without resorting to mineral vocabulary, and that is certainly true of this 2013. But there is so much more going on that it nearly makes me dizzy. A heady nose of lilac and iris, radish and raw ginger, along with hints of citrus and roasted root vegetables, sets the tone for what follows, an explosively concentrated interaction of grippingly piquant, pungent, incisive and brightly juicy elements. Apple and lime, caramelized parsnip and golden beet are mingled with smoky nut oils and laced with ginger, radish, iris root and white pepper. The reverberating finish adds to a kaleidoscopic whirl of the aforementioned elements an otherwise ineffable ore-like depth and saliva-inducing salinity. I was holding my breath that what I first tasted would be captured in bottle with complete success, and that’s happened.”
Terry Theise notes “The site lies at the foot of the Gaisberg, and contains eroded gneiss with a high proportion of paragneiss, mica and amphibolite, a perfect precondition for wines of minerality and generosity, just what this is. And, always, the best value in this portfolio, because it costs about 25% less than its peers. Steinsetz is licking at its heels of late, but Renner is just richer, less minty but more mineral; equally energetic but not so clamorous. Extroverted, angular, generous, smart.”
Schloss Gobelsburg GV Tradition Gruner Veltliner Reserve, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 97-98 points “Faintly yeasty and alkaline notes in the nose accompany intimations of the rich, earthy, umami-laden foundation of subtly caramelized root vegetables that the palate delivers, studded with peppercorns and drizzled with fragrant floral honey. Satiny in texture, searchingly expansive, yet buoyant and preserving a vibrant core of sheer refreshment, this enters a finishing realm of oyster liquor-like salinity, oceanic mineral and seaweedy depth, that will milk your salivary glands while leaving your mouth agape. (Any embarrassment will be well worth it.)” DS
Familie Saahs Nikolaihof im Weingebirge Smaragd Gruner Veltliner, Wachau 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 94 points “Bottled in November of last year, this repeatedly failed the official test for Qualitätswein, a detail that Niki Saahs imparts with seeming relish as well as amusement. High-toned suggestions of floral distillates mingle with hints of moss and intimations of the fruits to come. Rhubarb, apple and lime team up for a palate performance of Riesling-like brightness, sap and clarity. A sense of infused crushed stone, black tea and shrimp-shell reduction makes for a fascinating and almost preternaturally persistent finish.” DS
Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Riesling vom Stein Smaragd, Wachau 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
93 points International Wine Report “The 2012 Vom Stein Riesling from Nikolaihof is a drop-dead gorgeous wine. As it begins to open beautiful aromas of Asian pear, citrus fruits, lemon oil, white floral notes, green tea, slate and smoky minerals all come together beautifully in this energetic white. This possesses a gorgeous creamy texture that shows lovely balance with bright acidity as it heads into the clean, vibrant finish. As most of Nikolaihof’s wines, this is an age-worthy wine that require time before it will hit full-stride. (Best 2018-2035) – March, 2015 (JD)”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof im Weingebirge Gruner Veltliner Federspiel, Wachau 2014 750ML ($39.95) $28 special
Terry Theise notes “Draw-you-in aromas, like the famous salad-of-seventeen-leaves, herbs and flowers they serve in the restaurant. All of them perfect. The palate here emphasizes the mustards, with the ’14 snap and bounce and spice; a lacy wine like the veins and tracings on the bottom of a leaf.”

Bodegas Hermanos Sastre ‘Vina Sastre’ Roble, Ribera del Duero 2013 750ML ($21.95) $19 special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91 points “Brilliant ruby-red. Assertive aromas of fresh raspberry, spicecake and floral pastilles, with a peppery element adding lift and spiciness. Sweet and expansive on entry, then tighter in the middle, conveying a seductively perfumed quality to its red berry, cherry-cola and allspice flavors. Finishes energetic and long, with fine-grained tannins adding shape and grip. In a distinctly elegant style and quite appealing already after a bit of aeration. This wine was aged for nine months in used French and American oak barrels.”

The Wines So Nice We Ordered Them Twice
Brick House Vineyards Gamay Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2014 750ML ($31.95) $26.60 special
Kerry Winslow – Grapelive 92+ points “Doug Tunnel’s latest Brick House wines, even from 2011 and 2013 vintages, both tough years for Oregon, have turned out amazing and are wonderful wines with the 2011 Evelyn’s Pinot and the exotic and perfumed Les Dijonnais Pinot being stand outs, impressive stuff from Tunnel, a pioneer in Willamette biodynamics and Burgundy fiend. It was great to taste through the lineup and revisit his 2012 Chardonnay, which is drinking fabulously and very Puligny like, but I think my favorite Brick House was the new 2014 Gamay Noir, it really stood out and reminds me of 2009 Cru Beaujolais, it has a Cote de Brouilly feel and wonderful structure to go with expressive and ripe dark fruits. This vintage of Brick House Gamay is only the second to get above 14%, and honestly it isn’t fruity or thin, it drinks with Pinot Noir class and detail, medium in weight and with some tannin. The pure Gamay Noir character shines through on the nose and palate with blackberry, a mix of floral and spice, cherry, strawberry and succulent currant as well as a hint of flinty stones, minty herb, walnut oil and plum/peach flesh. This savvy Gamay picks up some earth and dried cranberry with air adding some savory/bitter element to fold in nicely with the lush fruits making for a very complete experience, Brick House is a leader in quality Gamay, but this varietal is doing great in Oregon with many fine efforts available, I especially recommend searching out Salem Wine Co. by Sashi Moorman and Raj Parr, Bow & Arrow and Division Wine Company versions, these are all very cool wines, and while the Brick House will be the toughest to get, you should search it out, it is lovely juice, drink from 2016 to 2021.”
Coudert Pere ‘Clos de la Roilette’ Fleurie Cuvee Tardive 2014 750ML ($31.95) $28 special
Vinopolnote: From old Fleurie vines, this cuvee is partially raised in old oak barrels and has traditionally been more geared for aging than the estate’s other bottlings.
Cantina del Pino Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Spectator 91 points “A pretty red, offering rose, cherry, strawberry and tobacco flavors, allied to a firm backbone. Delicate and tensile, finding good equilibrium in the end. Drink now through 2022.” WS

Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Tuscany 2011 375ML ($21.95) $16 special

Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Tuscany 2012 750ML ($34.95) $28 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Though delicate in profile, there’s no mistaking the cherry, strawberry, earth, leather and tobacco flavors of Sangiovese here. This is firm, with light yet mouthcoating tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2021.” WS

Wherein We Scored On A Grapelive Wine of the Day:
Weingut von Winning, Riesling Trocken, Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Erste Lage, Pfalz 2014 750ML ($31.95) $26 pre-arrival special
Grapelive 93+ points “The bright and clear pale gold Paradiesgarten 1er Lage Trocken, one of von Winning’s Premier Cru dry Rieslings, is like a swan, is is beautiful and graceful, though while young is a bit awkward and even a touch ugly, but wow it is really starting to blossom now and is a glorious and dynamic wine. The 2014 Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Cru leads with white flowers, rosewater, salty herbs with lemongrass and intense mineral notes leading to vibrant lime, tangy green apple, hints of white peach, mango skin, nectarine and wet stones. The extract is chalky and there is a touch of earthy complexity starting to emerge which adds character, this wine certainly looks to be a classic, it just needs a bit more time to unwind completely, it is von Winning’s best deal in dry Cru Rieslings and it as it opens in the glass gets very Chablis steely and reveals more textural pleasure and charm. I might call it nervy at first sip, but by the third sip you are beginning to rock and roll, I love it personally and can’t wait for Spring and Summer evenings to enjoy this racy white with it’s crisp and cool vigorous acidity and tightly wound focus. While not as generous and flamboyant as the Grosses Gewachs, this is a super wine with great mid term potential and rewards, drink over the next decade. For the best value from von Winning be sure to look for this and the new 2015 Riesling “Winnings” that has just a bit of sweetness, they are both steals!”

Bitouzet-Prieur
Small Farm, Big Dreams
2012’s Arriving This Month
Vincent Bitouzet and his son Francois hail from two centuries of deep winemaking roots in Burgundy, and one of the first family-owned domaines to bottle their wines. What you can expect is nothing short of classic age-worthy wines that are genuinely reflective of the terroir in each of their parcels.
Father and son work together to farm organically on all the holdings of their 12 hectare domaine, including 4 hectares to Chardonnay and the remaining 8 hectares to Pinot Noir plantings. Indigenous yeasts are used and all grapes are harvested manually.
Bitouzer-Prieur 2012’s Arriving Late February:
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Charmes, Meursault Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Charmes, Meursault Premier Cru 2012 1.5L ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Importer’ note: “This cuvée is one of the gems of the domaine, a complete expression of this vineyard’s special character as Bitouzet’s holdings fall within two separate sites: one from the high part (“du Haut”) and another from the lower section (“du Bas”). The two parcels are vinified separately and then blended together before bottling to create the whole. The lower section provides a stony minerality and an almost tannic expression; the upper section yields explosive aromatics as well as a round, buttery mouthfeel. The two parcels make up a total of 0.55 hectare; the vines were planted in 1944 and another section in 1987. The soil is a pebbly limestone with sand and loam consistency. Two barrels are reserved for the US market and, at our request, magnums and occasionally double magnums are prepared.”

Bitouzet Prieur Meursault Perrieres 2012 1.5L ($199.95) $170 pre-arrival special
Importer note: Perhaps the consistently greatest white wine from the Bitouzet-Prieur domaine, the “Perrieres” is firmly mineral, quite spicy and more elegant than the Charmes; a great wine of class and breed with remarkable density and a wine of extraordinary potential. Two barrels are reserved for the US market; magnums are always drawn for our use and double magnums are also prepared on occasion. The Bitouzets own 0.28 hectares of vines here in the part of the vineyard known as “Perrieres Dessous” and their vines were planted in 1983.

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay Les Caillerets 2012 1.5L ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The 2012 Volnay Caillerets is the most impressive of these 2012s from Francois Bitouzet. Here the flavors are deep, layered and beautifully resonant from start to finish. Plum, smoke, black cherry, licorice and spices wrap around the palate as this fleshy, deep Volnay shows off its pure class and pedigree. The finish is long, generous and inviting, but the 2012 is a wine for the cellar. Patience will be rewarded. In 2012 there is just one barrel of the Caillerets instead of the customary three.”

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay Les Chenes 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The estate’s 2012 Volnay Clos des Chênes is wonderfully complete. A wine that plays across all dimensions, the 2012 offers expressive aromatics, deep fruit and plenty of underlying structure. The style is dark, powerful and brooding, with perhaps a bit less finesse than the Caillerets and Taillepieds, but a level of explosiveness that is captivating. This was the last parcel to be harvested in 2012.”

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay Les Mitans 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points “The 2012 Volnay Mitans stands out for its total sense of refinement. Sweet floral notes meld into bright red cherries, spices, mint and anise. The 2012 is fragrant and nicely lifted throughout, with impeccable balance and tons of class. Sweet, ripe tannins support the long, understated finish. This is a terrific showing for Mitans.” AG

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Pitures, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points “The estate’s 2012 Volnay Pitures is the most massively tannic of these wines. Dark, rich and powerful, the 2012 is laced with black cherries, new leather, cloves and menthol, all supported by huge, incisive tannins. I would give the tannins a few years to soften, but the Pitures is likely to remain intense and even a bit rustic, especially in comparison to the other 2012s here.”

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay Les Taillepieds 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Bitouzet Prieur Volnay Les Taillepieds 2012 1.5L ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91-93+ points “A layered, totally exquisite wine, the 2012 Volnay Taillepieds impresses for its balance above all else. The aromas and flavors are beautifully detailed and nuanced in a Taillepieds that is all about crystalline purity. This tasting catches the 2012 in a slightly raw, unpolished state, but nothing a little time in bottle won’t take care of.”

Bitouzet Prieur Bourgogne Blanc 2014 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special \
Importer note: The parcel for this cuvée is the lieu-dit in Meursault known as “Les Herbeaux”, in the northern quadrant of Meursault just underneath the 1er Cru “Les Malpoiriers”. Bitouzet exploits 0.71 hectares and the vines were planted in 1953 with a section recently replanted in 2010 which is not yet in production. Puligny Montrachet “Les Levrons”: Bitouzet has a splendid little parcel on the northern tier of Puligny situated just beneath the fine 1er Cru “Les Referts”; this little gem is quite fine, direct in its approach, firmly mineral, with great length and persistence on the palate; a classic Puligny. Their holdings extend over 0.60 hectare: half of the surface is in vines planted in 1955; the other half was replanted in 2000.

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay 2013 375ML ($27.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Importer’s note: In their home village, the Bitouzets own 2.2 hectares of vines at the village level. The vines, planted at various stages (1961, 1987, 2003) are principally found in the two neighboring sites of “Ez Echards” and “Les Aussy” which both sit immediately underneath the 1er Cru “Ronceret”. This Volnay has excellent ruby-red color; it is fresh, fruity with exuberant red berry fruit that spreads on the palate; and, it is lightly tannic in the finish to let one know this is from Volnay.

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola and lavender pastille, with smoke and musky herb overtones and a touch of vanilla. Silky and sweet, showing good depth and vivacity to its fresh dark berry and blood orange flavors. Nicely concentrated for the vintage, finishing with noteworthy power and length and fine-grained tannins that add grip. This suave wine saw 50% new oak.” JR

Mark Ryan Winery Long Haul Proprietary Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Long Haul Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is another terrific Bordeaux blend from this team. Made from 49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it was vinified in stainless steel and aged in once used French oak barrels. It exhibits subtle hints of coffee bean in its red and black fruits, roasted meats, spice and licorice-styled bouquet, and picks up more and more floral nuances with time. Full-bodied, tight, focused and a little backward, it opens up nicely in the glass, has integrated acidity and a clean finish. Give it 2-4 years and drink it through 2032.”
Dunham Cellars Lewis Estate Vineyard Syrah, Columbia Valley 2011 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Another terrific effort, and one of the strongest Syrahs in the vintage, the 2011 Syrah Lewis Vineyard is 100% Syrah that spent 30 months in 90% new French oak, which you’d never know by tasting it. Gorgeous blackberry, blueberry, wild herbs, licorice, chocolate and hints of crushed rock all emerge from this beauty, and it flows onto the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, bright acidity and a seamless, elegant profile. It’s enjoyable now, but will shine for another decade at least as well.”

Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright, medium ruby-red. Sexy nutty oak complements ripe cassis, minerals, licorice and herbs on the nose. Wonderfully silky and refined, but with sexy herbal lift to the seamless berry and spice flavors. Very suave, youthful, classy Cabernet with sneaky depth of flavor and noble tannins. Sappy, subtle and long on the aftertaste. I find this wine much easier to taste today than the more backward 2012. Will it go into a shell or will it remain harmonious?” ST

Last-Minute Addition!
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 95 points “The 1981 Vina Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva has a complex bouquet of barley sugar, candle wax, dandelion and a touch of melon. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, dried honey and a touch of lemongrass than lends it edge. The finish is bone dry, beautifully defined and persistent in the mouth. Drink now-2030+”
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 93 points “The richly-colored 1981 1981 Viña Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva captures the essence of this house’s wines. It is a wine of great complexity as well as contrasts. At once mature yet seemingly ageless, full-bodied yet somehow also miraculously delicate, it displays evolved sensations of earthiness, smoke, roasted nuts and dried apricots in a more oxidative style with great persistence on the palate and enough acidity to make me think it will drink well for at least another ten or so years.”
Points Josh Raynolds – Vinous 93 “True gold, but remarkably youthful for its age. W ild, complex bouquet of pungent flowers, succulent herbs, orange peel, violet, vanilla, toasted nuts and baking spices. Rich, deep and beautifully concentrated, with surprising energy to the ripe pear and poached apple flavors complemented by marzipan and vanilla. This actually tightens up on the finish, showing a lingering exotic, spicy character. You could drink this right now or even hold it for a few more years.”
