Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez

“Raúl Pérez is the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius.” -Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW, Decanter Magazine.

Left to his own devices, Raul Perez was planning to be a medical professional. Even though he would become one of the most respected enologists of his generation, it is most instructive to look at Perez as an artist who has brought a new vision to his home appellation of Bierzo, first at his family’s winery and founding members of terroir focused “New Spain” movement like Bernabeleva before bringing his own winery into the world.

Beyond respect from the movers and shakers in his own country of origin Perez has received “Winemaker of the Year” in 2014 from Germany’s “Der Feinschmecker” magazine and “Best Winemaker in the World” from France’s “Bettane+Desseauve” wine Periodical in 2015.

Raul Perez Ultreia Saint Jacques, Bierzo, Spain 2021 750ml $21.90 special, 36 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 Points “The biggest volume of the winery is the 2021 Ultreia Saint Jacques, which represents some 170,000 bottles, and according to Raúl Pérez, it’s the most difficult wine to make here. They now work a lot to produce this wine, a blend of 11 wines selected from the 17 they made. It’s a wine that represents Bierzo and is from a year when they used more grapes from sandy soils. It has 13.16% alcohol and a pH of 3.66; it’s serious and restrained but juicy and easy to drink. Seventy percent of the wine matured in barrel and the rest in troncoconic oak vats.”

…also Available from Raul Perez:

Raul Perez ‘Ultreia de Valtuille’, Bierzo, Spain 2016 750ml $89 special, 4 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96+ Points “There are only 1,000 bottles of the 2016 Ultreia Valtuille (the new name, as all labels have been simplified and cleaned up, and some of the names have even been shortened). The crop was greatly reduced because of mildew, and the grapes are a lot more concentrated, with more tannin and structure, and they had to do a much longer élevage, up to 24 months in barrique. Despite its concentration and power, it has great freshness and perfume. You don’t find excess tannin, and it seems like the time in barrel has really polished the edges. It’s really outstanding.”

Envinate

Envínate, a Spanish winemaking collective founded in 2005, is dedicated to crafting wines that convey the unique terroir of their vineyards in a natural and minimalist style. Their focus on Atlantic-influenced regions like the Canary Islands has resulted in wines that are pure expressions of the land. Using organic farming practices, hand-harvesting, and traditional winemaking techniques, Envínate produces wines that are both natural and deeply satisfying.

Today we are proud to be able to offer these Envinate wines from Sanitago del Teide: a beautiful tourist village on Tenerife, the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands.

Importer’s Note “Santiago del Teide – Remarkable for its young volcanic soils, high altitude, precipitous cliffsides and intense solar radiation, Santiago del Teide is perched on the northwest slope of Mt. Teide. The vines here are untrained and the area has wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity during the year, with a dramatic diurnal shift.”
Envinate ‘Benje’ Blanco, Canary Islands, Spain 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 Points “The white 2023 Benje Blanco, fermented without temperature control since 2021, matured in a 2,500-liter oak foudre and neutral 350-liter barrel, while 65% of the wine was kept in concrete. They also selected finer lees for the élevage, and the wine seems to have gained in finesse. The white grapes didn’t suffer the heat as much as the red ones, but it was not an easy harvest in Santiago del Teide. There’s less oxidation, and the percentage of wine with flor yeasts (25% to 30%) made for finer wines too. There’s a sensation of higher freshness, sharper; it didn’t go through malolactic. It’s also less reductive, and despite being a riper year, the alcohol was kept to 12% and the
pH 3.06. It’s a great Benje Blanco.”

Envinate ‘Benje’ Tinto, Canary Islands, Spain 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 Points “The bottled 2023 Benje, which has 9% Listán Blanco and 1% Tintilla grapes to complement the Listán Prieto, comes from a very warm and dry year in Santiago del Teide when the vines got blocked and suffered a lot, as they also did in 2019. With the experience from that year, they did a softer vinification, with shorter macerations and extraction. Here, it was an even warmer and earlier year than 2022, with more immediate wines, approachable and open from the very beginning. It’s floral, aromatic and expressive, fine-boned and harmonious, with good freshness. 18,000 bottles and 250 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2024.”

Envinate ‘Vidueno de Santiago del Teide’, Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Spain 2023 750ml $39 special, 24 bottles available
Jose Pastor-Importer Notes “Vidueño de Santiago del Teide is sourced from a tiny 0.15ha parcel of old-vine, untrained pie franc Listan Blanco and Listan Prieto. This co-planted parcel is hand-harvested, destemmed and macerated for 15 days in an open tub, then transferred to three old 228L French barriques to age for 8 months on fine lees without battonage or added SO2. Bottling is without fining, filtration or any added SO2. Due to its high elevation, this wine offers much less Atlantic character than their Taganan or Valle de La Orotava cuvées.”

Olivares Altos

For over a century, the Olivares family has been crafting these intensely flavored reds from the sunbaked vineyard lands of Jumilla in South Easterly Spain.

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain 2021 750ml $14.50 special, 24 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 91 Points “The 2021 Altos de la Hoya is a varietal Monastrell from dry-farmed vines on poor limestone-rich soils with some 5% Garnacha in the blend. It has notes of ripe berries, aromatic herbs and an earthy touch and a round palate with juicy fruit and fine tannins. It’s very pleasant and fresh. 200,000 bottles produced.”

4 Monos

4 Monos Viticultores ‘GR10’ Vino Blanco de la Sierra de Gredos, Spain 2021 750ml $26.50 special, 12 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 91+ Points “The regional white 2021 GR-10 Blanco was produced with 60% Albillo Real and 15% Viura, with the remaining 25% composed of a mixture of varieties including Moscatel and Chelva Rosa from different vineyards in Cadalso de los Vidrios and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. It’s a little lighter than the wines produced with pure Albillo, with 13.5% alcohol. It’s a refreshing white with good balance and acidity. This fermented in a mixture of barrels and stainless steel and matured in used barrels for six months. The varietal mix changes here quite a lot, and so does the character of the wine. This feels fresher (it does have less alcohol), but the effect of the skin contact is also more noticeable; it’s a little cloudier and feels a bit wilder, and the chalky sensation is also stronger (it did have more skin contact than the 2020). It also comes through as a little funkier (but I like it!). 2,997 bottles were filled in August 2022.”

Champagne Doquet

“It’s the viticulture that makes the difference, not the vinification.” -Pascal Doquet

“With holdings of old vines in some of the greatest terroirs in the Côte des Blancs, Pascal Doquet has emerged over the last decade as one of the premier winemakers in Champagne.” –Schatzi Wines

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $66 special, 12 bottles available
Importer’s Notes “The chardonnay for “Arpège” comes from Vertus, Villeneuve and Mont Aimé—the grapes that are not in the Coeur de Terroir series. There is substantial reserve wine in the blend, preserved in enamel tanks to maintain freshness. Aromas of spice, black tea and pear dominate the flinty-silex soils from the Mont Aimé and lend smokiness and depth to the structure.”

Pascal Doquet Champ d’Alouettes Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne, France 2005 750ml $199 special, 3 bottles available
Winery note “Pascal is fortunate to have some very old parcels in the mid-slope of this renowned Grand Cru village. His grandfather consolidated nearly a hectare of vines in Champ d’Alouettes, of which Pascal owns 60% of the original holdings.”

Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins

Like The Traveling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, and The Band before them, Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins is a kind of a super group. Pulling talent (and grapes) from famous wine families of the Rhône like Jaboulet, Sorrel, and Perrin, Les Alexandrins puts a fantastic price on the kind of quality that comes from centuries of accumulated experience.

A must buy for fans of the Northern Rhône and Syrahs generally, this wine is destined to grace many of our staff’s family dinner tables and parties in this coming holiday season.

hot deal!  Maison Les Alexandrins Crozes-Hermitage Rouge, Rhone, France 2021 750ml $23.50 special, 36 bottles available
Not reviewed, previous vintage provided for reference.
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 90 Points “Bright blue-purple color. Ripe blackberry, candied violet and olive aromas show very good clarity and spicy lift. Chewy, gently sweet, black and blue fruit flavors pick up olive, cracked pepper and floral pastille nuances with air. Finishes firm and long, with dusty tannins adding solid closing grip.”

WAS $889
Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia 2012 750ml $789 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 Points “The earthy, woodsy aromas show some evolution in this red, with just a hint of white truffle, yet there’s still a hefty dose of spicy oak to be resolved. Rich and sumptuous midpalate, showing plum, cherry, tar and tobacco flavors shaded by vanilla and toasty spices, with firm, dusty tannins laying a grip on the long finish. Give this another year or two in the cellar.”

WAS $149
Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 2017 750ml $149 special, 4 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ Points “The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2017 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows good focus, structure and a sharper character that is often the distinguishing factor in this wine. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit and plum, but it also shows a solid framing of iron ore and dark stony mineral. These give the wine greater lift and contoured edges. This is not the first time that Colonnello is my favorite wine in this lineup, and I suspect it won’t be the last.”

WAS $135
Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice 2017 750ml $119 special, 16 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 Points “This is a medium-bodied Nebbiolo from a hot vintage with a ruby-tinged appearance. The 2017 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice shows generous inner fiber and richness with dried cherry, blackberry, plum and dark spice. Fruit for this wine comes from a beautiful amphitheater of vines with the perched town of Novello high up on the skyline. I love the especially smooth and soft quality to what is a powerful and lasting wine. Only 3,500 bottles were made.”

WAS $125
Gaja Dagromis Barolo 2019 750ml $108 special, 4 bottles available
Winery Note “2019 Dagromis has a garnet color with violet highlights. On the nose, this wine showcases floral and fruity notes of violet, cherry, plum, sweet licorice, ginger, and marzipan. On the palate, delicate showing juicy, cherry-like mouthfeel leads to a savory, yet sweet entry with a subtle tannin structure all characteristics of the vintage. This is a classic Barolo with great aging potential.”

WAS $89
Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric Del Fiasc 2017 750ml $79 special, 10 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ Points “The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”

WAS $79
Luigi Baudana Barolo Cerretta 2018 750ml $69 special, 16 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 Points “The 2018 Barolo Cerretta is a potent, searing wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Scorching tannins wrap around a core of dark red/black fruit, gravel, smoke, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and game. The 2018 is going to need a number of years to come around and for those formidable tannins to soften.”

WAS $69
Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera 2018 750ml $59 special, 19 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 Points “Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.”

WAS $69
Pecchenino Barolo Bussia 2015 750ml $59 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 Points “The 2015 Barolo Bussia is a very pretty, effusive wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Spice and floral notes open first. Silky and pliant, with lovely depth, the 2015 is so expressive today. Fine mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly while adding freshness and cut to balance the open-knit fruit. Readers looking for a Barolo to drink now will find so much to admire in the 2015 Bussia.”

Delamotte is best known as the more affordable sister estate of Salon—one of the finest names in luxury Blanc de Blancs Champagne. The estates share viticultural, winemaking, and management teams, per Wine Searcher. While overlooking Delamotte in favor of its wildly more expensive sister is understandable, it ignores the fact that Delamotte is a Champagne House of note in its own right.

What makes Delamotte’s Champagnes so special? These represent some of the finest Blanc de Blancs terroirs in all of Champagne. These Champagnes define chalk: the precious fruit is grown on the slopes of the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, and Cramant. The wines are given just a small dosage to allow the Cote des Blancs terroir to shine. The Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes, too, hail from illustrious Grand Cru villages well known to insiders: Bouzy, Ambonnay and Tours-sur-Marne.

These are enchanting and captivating Cote des Blancs Champagnes worthy of your attention (and ample space in your cellar). At a tenth of the price of their sister estate, these offer an incredible value, especially during our three-day sale!

James Suckling 91 points “Attractively chalky and biscuity nose, with some honey, apricots and lemon cream. It’s balanced and focused, with very fine bubbles, a medium body and well-rounded finish. 60% chardonnay, 35% pinot noir and 5% meunier. Base wine from 2018 with 20% reserve wines from 2017 and 2016. Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Brut 2014 750ml Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Delamotte’s just-released 2014 Blanc de Blancs has turned out very well indeed, opening in the glass with scents of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, fresh bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, with excellent depth at the core, racy acids and a chalky finish, this isn’t as muscular as the 2008 or 2012, but it has real cut and persistence and should age very gracefully indeed.”
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “A blend of the six Grand Cru villages of the Cote de Blancs, with 6.5 grams per liter dosage, the 2014 Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut is fresh and precise, with aromas of vibrant green apple, pleasant reduction with flint, and delicate smoke, citrus blossoms, and wet stone. The transition to the palate is seamless and linear, with crisp and crunchy green fruit, and is electric with lime candy, a refined mousse, and a chalky texture. It warrants more time before opening, but it is delicious and refreshing now. Drink over 2023-2043.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2014 Blanc de Blancs is seriously impressive. Ample in feel, Delamotte is especially rich in 2014, and yet there is plenty of freshness to balance things out. This is an especially savory style for Delamotte, and one that works so well. Dried lemon peel, pastry, almond, dried herbs and chamomile open in a beautifully translucent Blanc des Blancs that marries power and finesse. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”

Delamotte Brut Rosé NV 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“[Reviewed in 2023] The NV Champagne Rosé is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Noir, with the base of 2019, and 15% still red wine. It pours a salmon/orange-tinged hue and opens in the glass to fresh, floral, pretty aromas of nectarine, salted orange, fresh rose petal, and curry spice. Medium-bodied, it has a wonderful chalky and pithy texture, with a pinpoint mousse that’s almost an afterthought. Ripe with fruit but well-balanced and long, with mouthwatering acidity, its spicier notes (cardamom, perhaps?) start to reveal themselves as it opens, and the wine lasts long on the palate. It is quite distinctive. Drink 2024-2040. 8 grams per liter dosage.” [Fall 2023 release. Base vintage may vary from review.]

“Coming from the region of Manzaneda, the red 2019 Azos da Vila is dark and a little cloudy, earthy and with some rusticity. It was produced with grapes from ancient vineyards planted with Mencía, Mouratón and Merenzao that can represent 70% of the volume and then some Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro and Palomino. Importer Note “Field blend of Mouraton, Mencia, Garnacha Tintorera, Merenzao, Gran Negro, and other local varieties from 80-120-year-old vines on granitic soils near Manzaneda in the Val do Bibei. We’ve placed four of our top in-stock California estates on our three-day sale!

Buccella

According to Bill and Alicia Deem, their wine project began with a dream and a promise over a well-aged bottle of Gaja. That fact alone should properly set the stage for this winery’s power and ambition. After all, with a name like Buccella, translated from Latin into “mouthful,” why would they settle for something small?

Hundred Acre

Hundred Acre’s wines are as unique and filled with personality as their winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge. Big, bold, rich and textured, they’re among the most coveted wines we offer. Only one grape cluster is grown per vine and sorting occurs berry-by-berry at harvest, nearly unheard of practices that ensure intense concentration and complexity.

Kapcsandy

In 2000 Lou Kapcsándy discovered that the old Beringer State Lane vineyard, primary source for the Private Reserve Cabernet program, was for sale.  He bought the twenty-acre vineyard, replanted it, and quickly began producing some of the most lauded wines to come out of the Napa Valley.

Kapcsándy’s grape growing philosophy involves intense cultivation, involving meticulous hedging and maintenance with continuity in the way the vines are planted, cared for and harvested. Vines are planted more densely than is typical for Napa Valley, instead mimicking the practices of 1st Growth Bordeaux. This creates smaller berries with higher skin-to-juice ratios and naturally stresses the vines resulting in a higher intensity of flavors, complexities, and aromas.

Morlet

Since arriving in California, Luc Morlet has left a distinctive imprint on many superlative wineries such as Peter Michael (where he is still a consultant) before establishing his own winery, Morlet Family Vineyards. Grapes are hand-harvested and double-sorted to maintain the highest quality before spontaneous fermentation and aging in French oak. These wines are stunningly focused and fractal-like in their complexity, drinking surprisingly well young despite their longevity.

Jeb Dunnuck 95+ points
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon shows a touch more purity and vibrancy, yet it’s certainly cut from the same cloth with its classic, age-worthy style. Cassis, crushed stone, lead pencil, and hints of violets define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with beautiful tannins and the focused, pure, seamless style of the vintage. The blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, and the rest Merlot. It’s well worth following over the coming 20-25 years.”

Jeb Dunnuck 95+ points
“The inky-hued 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is surprisingly structured and powerful, with a big nose of cassis, chocolaty oak, scorched earth, and graphite. Where many 2019s are plush and opulent, this has a solid core of tannins that keeps it focused and elegant, with wonderful purity of fruit. I like it. It certainly offers pleasure today, yet smart money will give these 4-5 years in the cellar, and I suspect it will see its 20th birthday in fine form.”

Winemaker Notes
“Always a 100% Cabernet blend, our Cuvée Katrina Eileen is an opulent and mouth-enriching wine. Captivated by the inky-black color, luscious scents of dark espresso and cinnamon stick leap out, along with powerful elements of graphite and cassis. Remarkably rich and seamless, while boasting flavors of blueberry compote, dark chocolate and black raspberries, this is a compelling and luxurious wine focused upon velvety texture, silky tannins and incredible length. An intentional breadth on the palate and length in the finish are hallmarks of this wine.”

“Our 2018 Merlot is graceful and layered. Aromas of rhubarb, raspberry jam and ripe plum jump out of the glass and mingle with hints of baking spice, clove and vanilla bean. An alluring mid palate is balanced by sweet red fruit and a delectable savory finish. Soft, plush, juicy tannins create a textured palate, which keeps you yearning for another sip. A welcoming vibrancy is retained allowing for this wine to be incredibly inviting. “The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Morlet Estate comes from a vineyard just outside of Saint Helena and it’s always a more structured, masculine wine compared to the Passionnement release. Opulent notes of black fruits, chocolate, smoked earth, and some obvious minerality all emerge from this full-bodied, structured, big-boned Cabernet Sauvignon that’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 2-3 decades.”

Robert Parker-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2013 Pinot Noir Joli Coeur is what Luc Morlet calls ‘the sweet spot’ of his Coteaux Nobles Vineyard. The berries tend to size up smaller and the clusters weigh less. This has an extra gear in it, so to speak, and displays plenty of black and red currant fruits, some rose petals and other floral notes, forest floor, a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific texture, and remarkable richness and purity. This stunner will age well for 10-15 years.”

Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a quiet intensity at first that grows exponentially in the mouth into an aria of epic proportions, revealing layer upon layer of savory/sweet flavors, bags of black fruits and tons of spicy sparks all within a firm, very finely grained frame, finishing very long and with compelling minerality. Vieux Telegraphe

Vieux Telegraphe is a name that instantly connotes greatness and profundity in wine. One of the benchmark names in Chateauneuf du Pape, the estate’s wines are legendary for their complexity and longevity.  Owned for generations by the esteemed Brunier family, the venerable estate sits in the fabled “La Crau” subzone of Chateauneuf—home of the famous galet soils (only found in select areas in the AOC).  These large rocks reflect heat back to the vines at night, creating the intense, powerful wines that top estates like Telegraphe are known for.

“Traditionally dominated by clairette (45%) and grenache blanc (30%), then roussanne and bourboulenc. The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid. Drink or hold.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A nice throwback style, with a range of dried lavender and rosemary notes peeking out from a cedar-framed core of mulled cherry, blood orange and plum fruit. Features warm stone, licorice root and tobacco leaf accents that fill in through the energetic finish. A wine that’s very confident in its terroir. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,495 cases imported. — JM”

Millton is New Zealand’s first organic and second biodynamic wine estate, certified by Bio-Gro and Demeter respectively, and has been cultivated this way since the winery’s founding. Winery Note
“Our love for Pinot Noir dates back to the mid-1980s when we planted our first block here in Kumeu. Having already started on our journey to create a world-class Chardonnay, we knew this grape needed a Burgundian counterpart because what grows well where great Chardonnay grows? Now produced from two sites, our Hunting Hill Vineyard in Kumeu and Rays Road in Hawke’s Bay, these two single vineyards show very different expressions of Pinot Noir. Hunting Hill Pinot Noir was planted in 1994 over clay and grown here in the warmer conditions of Kumeu, often providing a beautiful purity of black fruit characters. The Rays Road, in Hawke’s Bay, is a colder, higher altitude vineyard planted on limestone. It’s a much cooler site and provides very intense and focused Pinot Noir characteristics.”

“Earth tones and dusty red tea gratify, surrounded by red cherry cola. Bright cranberry seasoned with cinnamon emerges midway and lasts through the finish.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Like the turn of a pepper grinder, this is full of fresh white pepper aromas, laced with pomegranate, red berry and anise, with a cool stone nuance. The palate is vibrant and fresh with a tug of savory tannins and lovely tangy red berries. There’s a lightness here that provides ease, and a quiet power that adds complexity, all at an affordable price.”

Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names. Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist. Rich and powerful in their youth, the wines are built to age. Their true greatness develops after time in the cellar – something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers.

With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the Scavino wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today. So stock up while the Close-Out lasts.

“The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family.

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points
“The 2017 Barolo Prapò is yet another stellar wine in this range. Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.”

Winery Notes “Abbey Ridge Pinot noir. Year after year Abbey Ridge produces some of the best Pinot noir in Oregon. It is not the richest or the ripest but it is clearly one of the most elegant sites in the state. Most vintages cast forth an initial fragrance of rose petals followed by lavender and rosemary (note that the Chardonnay from the same block has similar scents…terroir is real!). Abbey Ridge always starts subtly in the front of the mouth and builds to a crescendo on the far back of the palate.
Cameron ‘Abbey Ridge’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $75 special, 36+ bottles available
Vinopolnote “One of the great Pinot Noirs of the vintage so far… if not decade. Intense Loganberry and sandalwood on the nose and palette make this an anything but a standard Willamette Pinot Noir. Just phenomenal.”

Winery Note “Clos Electrique Rouge. The estate vineyard consists of at least 15 different clones of Pinot noir on a mere 2 acres (less than 1 hectare) of land. The yields are always very small averaging between 1 and 2 tons per acre (that is less than 25 hl/hectar). This wine is typically gnarly and intense, changing constantly in the glass and has fooled many wine-lovers into declaring it to be an old world wine.”
Cameron Clos Electrique Rouge, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $75 special, 36+ bottles available
Vinopolnote “This bottling is a finely etched masterpiece with lifted acidity, fruit notes of blueberry and baked boysenberry and a hint of iron rich earth.”

The Whites:

Winery Note “Our Chardonnays are truly made in the tradition of the great white wines of Burgundy. Both Abbey Ridge and Clos Electrique vineyards are planted to very rare clones of Chardonnay not typically planted in either Oregon or California. The wines are fermented with indigenous wild yeasts from the respective vineyards and finished with French yeast to assure dryness. Both wines from these single vineyards are fermented in older, nearly neutral French oak barrels and then left with the original yeast sediment for nearly 2 years in our cave which averages 57°F (14°C). They are bottled without filtration and generally have an aging potential of well over 10 years.”
Cameron ‘Abbey Ridge’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $75 special, only 6 bottles available
VinopolNote Golden yellow and incredibly fragrant, this reads like a Chablis with restraint, vibrant citrus fruit, and a long finish.

Winery Notes “In 1985, after working out of a roofless warehouse on the other side of the tracks in McMinnville, we moved to our current location in the hills above Dundee. Here, we planted Clos Electrique, a 4 acre dry-farmed vineyard that included Pinot noir and Chardonnay.”
Cameron Clos Electrique Blanc, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml $75 special, 24 bottles available
VinopolNote “The Clos Electrique is Cameron’s estate vineyard, named after the electric deer fence that surrounds it.  This is planted to a mix of clones and is vinified traditionally—no racking and all in older barrels.  This is crisp and coiled, with distinct minerality and a lot of power in a lithe frame.  Like most vintages of the Electrique Blanc, this is quite good now but will be stellar in a few years.”

France

Domaine Simon Bize et fils

Chisa Bize, the driving force behind Domaine Bize, took the reins in 2013. Inspired by her studies under Anne-Claude Leflaive, she has steadily steered the domaine towards organic and biodynamic practices. The estate boasts a diverse range of premier cru bottlings, all sourced from decades-old vines. Even the entry-level wines benefit from old vine fruit, contributing to their exceptional complexity and weight.

Simon Bize Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml $519 special, 2 bottles available
Neil Martin- Vinous “The 2021 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was not touched by the frost, unlike Bize’s other cuvées. This has a very elegant bouquet with tertiary red berry fruit and hints of bay leaf and white pepper that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins. This is well balanced and understated in style with a pretty finish that has an airiness about it. Enjoy this over the next decade.”

Simon Bize Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Rouge, France 2021 750ml $119 special, 4 bottles available
Neil Martin- Vinous “Marconnets, Fourneaux and Talmettes, each devastated by the frost. This has a delightful nose, not complex, yet clean and pure with strawberry pastilles, orange blossom and touches of rose petal. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannins, sufficient fruit and a deftly spiced, white peppertinged finish showing moderate length. This is an interesting assemblage, and it should drink well over the next decade.”

Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune Aux Grands Liards, Cote de Beaune, France 2021 750ml $81.90 special, 3 bottles available
Neil Martin- Vinous “The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards works much better on the nose than the regular Savigny Village, presenting pretty red cherries and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. This is fresh and citric in style, with a pointed orange rind-infused finish. Enjoy over four to seven years.”

Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $66 special, 12 bottles available

Doquet Champ d’Alouettes Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne, France 2005 750ml $199 special, 3 bottles available
Winery note “Pascal is fortunate to have some very old parcels in the mid-slope of this renowned Grand Cru village. His grandfather consolidated nearly a hectare of vines in Champ d’Alouettes, of which Pascal owns 60% of the original holdings.”

Wineries We Love

Conterno: The first family of Barolo

Although Aldo and Giovanni Conterno began as co-proprietors of their late father Giacomo’s winery, they eventually parted ways over branching winemaking philosophies. Aldo, the eldest, began a new project, while Giovanni guided stayed at the helm his father’s eponymous winery.

Two Wineries, two brothers, two very different styles and yet both estates became standard bearers in their own right. Today we celebrate these titans of Barolo for their unique contributions to Italian wine!

Poderi Aldo Conterno

“One of the secrets of Conterno’s success, besides owning prime vineyards, was his open-mindedness: a quality few other Barolo producers from his generation possessed.” -Kerin O’Keefe

Of the two wineries, Aldo’s wines have been considered more modern than his brother’s, known for freshness and balance. Early on Aldo decided to soften the typically immense tannic structure of Barolo through techniques like shorter fermentations and utilizing pump-overs versus , which helped to change the trajectory of Barolo in the 20th era. Although Aldo passed away in 2012, his winery is still a powerhouse, ably tended by his sons Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo.

The most acclaimed and precious wine that Poderi Aldo Conterno produces, the Granbussia Barolo derives from the best Bussia vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, the heart of Barolo. Aged for over thirty months in oak casks and refined for a further six years, the Granbussia represents the purest essence of three different historical Bussia cru: the Romirasco, Cicala, Colonnello vineyards.
Close-out pricing  Aldo Conterno Granbussia, Barolo Riserva DOCG, Italy 2012 750ml $789 special, 6 bottles available
Give this another year or two in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2042.”

Aldo Conterno Colonnello, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2017 750ml $149 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 Points “Offering plum, cherry, iron, eucalyptus and black pepper aromas and flavors, this broad red has absorbed the oak treatment pretty well already, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and long, ending with elements of mineral and spice. Best from 2025 through 2043.”

Giacomo Conterno

Named for Aldo and Giovanni’s father and helmed by Giovanni until his death in 2004, the wines are made using traditional Barolo methods like slow fermentation and aging in giant, used barriques. Unlike the fresher, fruitier Aldo Conterno wines, a Giacomo Conterno Barolo is a dense, powerful, and muscular experience. It needs much time to tame down.

The winery is currently owned and operated by Giovanni’s son Roberto (the rather serious man pictured above) who has remained faithfully married to the ultra-traditional style of his Father and Grandfather. There is a great legacy riding on his shoulders, but according to his own importer Polaner, Roberto is “the most annoying and perfectionist winemakers we have experienced,” who has “nonetheless taken the winery to even greater heights than his predecessors.”

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy 2021 750ml $84.50 special, only 1 bottle left!
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 Points “The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Cerretta is bright, focused and nervy. Blood orange, red cherry fruit, spice and mint all race across the palate. There’s tremendous energy and tension running through the 2021. Vibrant saline notes round out the finish.”

Giacomo Conterno Arione, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2018 750ml $235 special, 5 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94-96 Points “Tasted from barrel, the 2018 Barolo Arione still has another year in botte and time in bottle before its commercial release. However, the wine shows a distinct personality that is immediately gentle and open-knit despite its very young age. With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, there is ethereal softness here, but this characterization is relative considering the ample power and depth always associated with this site. It feels like this 2018 vintage is still warming up and is slowly putting on volume and weight. Its metamorphosis is far from complete. However, what you can read into the wine now is the quality of its fruit and its classic Nebbiolo aromas of wild berry, pressed violet, rust and blood orange.”

Giacomo Conterno ‘Cerretta’, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2018 750ml $249 special, 4 bottles available
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 2018 1.5L $599 special, only 1 magnum available!
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95-97 Points “Tasted from barrel, the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Cerretta is shaping up to be a beauty. What stands out most at this very young stage is the quality and the elegant tightness of the tannins. Cerretta fruit from Serralunga d’Alba makes for powerful, structured and concentrated Nebbiolo that is delivered with naked clarity and outstanding purity. These qualities are clearly linked to the vineyard site and less to the conservative efforts executed at the winery. You taste the crunch or the nervous quality of the grape skins and pulp with dark and purple berry nuances and rusty or mineral overtones that hint at the more significant presence of clay in these soils.”

Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy 2018 750ml $249 special, 3 bottles available
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia 2018 3L $1,349 special, 1 3L bottle available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ Points “The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here.”

Raphael et Vincent Bereche

“It’s been nearly two decades since growers began to dominate the headlines in Champagne. Yet, over that period, surprisingly few growers have managed to separate themselves from the pack—by virtue of their genius or their gift for making Champagne of unique expressiveness. Two that have are the brothers, Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche.” –Rare Wine Company, Importer

This very special wine, Bereche’s “Côte” Millesime represents a combination of brothers Raphael & Vincent’s incredibly precise and technical winemaking prowess in service to the best regions in Champagne, like Oger, that they would never have access to in their Estate bottlings. This wine is a phenomenal tightrope act: a Champagne that is both opulent and refreshing. Plush and rounded, with a bolt of acidity ripping right through it.

Only 5,300 bottles of this wine were produced and we are selling this super rare bottle at the lowest price in the United States!

Gismondi on Wine 94 Points (2005 vintage) ” …This chardonnay is from mid-slope Grand Cru Avize, and the 2005 vintage. It went into bottle in 2006 and remained there until its disgorging in December 2016 (!!), dosed with 4 g/l. Exceptional finesse and complexity, with layers of wet and dry chalk, lemon peel, green apple, fresh filberts, crispy meringue on a finely textured palate. A wave of savoury salts kissed with brown butter rides throughout, providing an alluring interest. There’s a natural restraint, yet palpable intensity in this graceful, characterful wine, one that stood out amongst the rest.”

De Venoge

Founded in 1825 by Henri-Marc de Venoge, a Swiss immigrant to the Champagne region, but these wines are as French as can be. In fact, they were chosen as the official Champagne House of the 1899 Paris Exhibition when the Eiffel Tower was unveiled to the World.

It is only fitting then that these wines are still made in a traditional style rarely seen today. Unlike many modern Champagnes made in a crisp, fresh, but brittle style, the champagnes of De Venoge undergo Malolactic fermentation, resulting in a rounder, fatter, more elegant style that can age for decades.

De Venoge Louis XV Brut 2006 750ml
$169 special, 22 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 Points “On the palate, this is an intense, round, fresh and complex Louis XV with great purity and finesse. The wine opens on the palate like a soufflé, coating the whole palate without any pressure or weight—gorgeous!”

De Venoge Louis XV Brut 2008 750ml
$219 special, 31 bottles available
James Suckling 95 Points “This is really punchy and broad-shouldered with muscular structure and citrusy undertones. Full body. Lightly tannic and a fresh and vivid finish. This is the first vintage without malolactic fermentation ever. One for the cellar. Better in 2022.”

WAS $189
De Venoge Louis XV Extra Brut Rose 2002 750ml
$159 special, 17 bottles available
Wine Spectator 93 Points “Harmonious, with fine intensity, offering rich notes of spice cake, toasted almond, dried cherry, grilled plum and smoky mineral. Almost velvety in texture, with juicy acidity that brings you back for another sip. Delicious.”

Charles Ellner Seduction Brut 2007 750ml
$59 special, 6 bottles available
International Wine Review 93 Points “The 2007 ‘Seduction’ is a lovely showing from this house. This begins to impress with inviting aromas of baked apples, pears and lemon oil with hints of toast and chalky mineral nuances all taking shape. On the palate this displays a wonderful elegant side, but with plenty of energy from the underlying acidity which drives this wine through the complex finish. Overall this is a fantastic bottle of Champagne that is drinking beautifully today and still has a few more years of drinking pleasure ahead.”

Guy Charlemagne

WAS $119
Guy Charlemagne Brut Mesnillesime Grand Cru 2014 750ml
$99 special, 16 bottles available
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 93 Points “The 2014 Extra Brut Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from on average 60-year-old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, vinified in oak with blocked malolactic fermentation. Notes of dried corn husk and salty maize meal on the nose take turns with yellow apple on the nose. The oak is apparent in savoriness rather than vanilla and a certain roundness on the body, beautifully handled. The mousse is still bright and sprightly, highlighting saltiness and fresh apple equally. This has an assertive personality, and comes across as a muscular, toned blanc de blancs, bracing at first, then relaxing into a warm smile. The umami finish can absolutely take on food.”
