Holiday Bordeaux Is Back on Sale 11-17-24

Somewhere in the last 10 years we started to forget about Bordeaux. Maybe it was the advent and rush of the natural wine movement and ‘new school’ wines , or perhaps it was the increase in perceived luxury following the legendary 09′ and 10′ vintages. It could even have been a slow shift in perception towards the idea that Bordeaux is less of a wine to drink and more of a collectible to be boasted about. The likely truth is that all of these factors have influenced the new and old American wine enthusiast to overlook some of the greatest wine made on the planet.

That is nowhere near an exaggeration. In case you haven’t noticed, Cabernet, Merlot, and the usual Bordeaux blend suspects are capable of making absolutely stunning wines all over the world. Before there was Napa Valley Cabernet, there was Bordeaux. Before there was Chilean red blend, there was Bordeaux. Before there was Mendoza Malbec, there was Bordeaux. We could go on and on. How massive though is the irony that the global palate can be so proud of the native wines which have built the identity of their regions, and so dismissive of the wines which provided the very blueprint of success?

The reality is that there’s a lot of very good wine competing for our attention all of time, and Bordeaux has not always done itself a favor on the pricing side in making some of its best wines broadly accessible. This is changing FAST. The level of winemaking coming out Bordeaux at the moment is of such a high quality, and at such a pervasive level, that the big appellations and smaller appellations alike are bursting at the seams with fantastic wine. Funny as it is to think, consumers used to lean on an 1855 classification of the top estates to inform their purchasing decisions. There are now hundreds of estates and wines that don’t exist on that list but offer amazing drinking experiences for wonderfully low prices.

Bordeaux is as much the blueprint for a globally successful wine style as it is a beautiful region with exceptional terroir. Nowhere else does Cabernet and Merlot so consistently produce wines of deep minerality, complex bouquet, and delicious fruit. These are wines built for the holiday table; perfect fits for pairing with intimate family moments over dinner, and the late night conversations and memory sharing that come after.

Below we’re going to recommend several curated Bordeauxs across three different price spectrums: Excellent Value, Mid-range Beauties, and Best-in-Class. These wines will be perfect to share with friends and family over your holiday celebrations, and they’ll be treasures to enjoy long after.

EXCELLENT VALUE

Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion ‘Le C des Carmes’, Pessac-Leognan 2020 750ml $33 special, 29 bottles available
Decanter 94 points “Smells rich with perfumed blackcurrants. Clean and crisp on the palate, a smooth and silky texture but with crunchy and bright, almost sharp fruit – dark cherries, plums and figs edged with a chalky, minerality. Clearly charming, this is succulent, supple and so easy to like with excellent drinkability. Refreshing and totally moreish.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Bottled after 24 months’ élevage, much of which took place in large foudres, the 2020 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and spices complemented by hints of rose petal and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, supple and pillowy, with an ample core of fruit framed by melting tannins, it’s a suave and charming blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot.”

Chateau Capbern, Saint-Estephe 2018 750ml $36 special, 15 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “The 2018 Château Capbern checks in as a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, all of which was brought up in 60% new barrels. It has a deep, dark, earthy, classic Saint-Estèphe bouquet that gives up lots of cassis and almost blue fruits as well as ample chocolate, damp earth, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. With a full-bodied, rich, opulent mouthfeel, loads of sumptuous dark fruits, sweet tannins, and a great finish, this brilliant 2018 brings lots of fruit and opulence, yet stays weightless and balanced, with solid underlying structure. A hidden gem in the vintage, this is every bit as good as the 2016, and it’s going to shine for two decades or more.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “This richly structured wine is layered with dense black fruits and serious tannins. A big wine in every sense, it is concentrated and juicy. The wine is made by the team from nearby classed growth Château Calon Ségur. Drink from 2026. -Roger Voss”

l’Hetre, Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux 2016 750ml $29.5 special, 36+ bottles available
Jancis Robinson “L’Hêtre 2016 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is the first release of this wine from the organically farmed estate perched at 100 m on the end of the St-Philippe d’Aiguilhe limestone plateau, the highest point in Bordeaux…‘Rich in blackcurrant fruit with a savoury dark glow to make it more than just fruit. Just a touch of smoky char even though the oak is well in the background, a seductive fruit sweetness. On the palate, this is beautifully balanced, the alcohol perfectly integrated in the tannic structure and fruit core with a fresh tang that runs through the middle. There’s a cool fluidity to it even with its depth and length. Fine, dry, lingering and savoury aftertaste. Impressive first vintage with a promising future in the bottle. I opened this on a Sunday evening and it was still tasting fresh and vibrant four days later. This is a very classy wine, and the tannins tell you everything: fine, definite, building in the mouth but in perfect balance with the fruit and freshness. Blue-blooded Castillon. Catch it while you can.'”

MID-RANGE BEAUTIES

Le Crock St Estephe 2016 750ml $41.90 special, 11 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Cellar Sellection. Under the same management as Château Léoville-Poyferré in Saint-Julien, this estate belongs to the Cuvelier family. With its structured Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is made to age. Big tannins and concentrated fruits are full and dense.”
Decanter 94 points “Clearly standing out in this line-up, an impressive, well-crafted wine with great tannic hold; a wine you would be thrilled to own. Cassis, bilberry, blackberry, hawthorn, black chocolate, slate. Great texture and balance, and full of St-Estèphe signature. Great stuff.”

La Reserve de Leoville Barton, Saint-Julien 2019 750ml $47.50 special, 24 bottles available
Jane Anson 92 points
“Attractive, with personality and texture to the loganberry and blackberry fruit. The muscular tannins have juice running through them, and overall this has plenty of lift and tension while remaining appealingly unfussy.”
Decanter 92 points “Shiny glossy fruit on the nose, floral and pretty. Bright pink in the glass full of blackcurrant and cherry aromas. Nice plushness on the palate with chewy tannins that have a touch of dryness/chalkiness and drive of fresh red fruit, with some creamy, chalky aspects coming in on the finish. Nicely balanced. It’s balanced and fresh, light and playful. Not showy, but easy. Touch of cedar wood on the edges at the finish. Drinking Window 2023 – 2030.”

Chateau Rouget, Pomerol 2019 750ml $59 special, 36+ bottles available
James Suckling 95 points “This is soft and chewy with very round tannins and lots of blackberry, toasted-oak, walnut and earth character. Traditional with a new vibe. Full-bodied, layered and juicy. Some tobacco, stem and chocolate, too. Better after 2026.”
Decanter 95 points “Ripe and dried red berry fruit on the nose, raisins, freshly picked raspberries and blueberries. Some wonderful potpourri perfume too. Great grip and hold from the start – this is tannic and they coat the mouth but with such a bright and juicy aspect too. Real energy here, a lighter if you can say that (as still 14.5%) style, with focus on delicate red fruits, perfume and dark chocolate. RIch to start with, muscular with a bold immediate taste then the delicacy comes in. A wonderful aerial style that is all in balance but still needs some time. It will reward cellaring. Great potential here and quality winemaking on show. Tasted twice.”
Vinous 94 points “The 2019 Rouget is bold, plush and racy to the core. Raspberry jam, spice, kirsch, leather, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco all meld together effortlessly. This sumptuous, flamboyant Pomerol captures all of the natural intensity of the year.”

Chateau d’Issan, Margaux 2020 750ml $75 special, 23 bottles available
Decanter 96 points “Wonderfully intense on the nose, so ripe and concentrated with some toasted oak aromas. Supple and vibrant on the palate, the fruit is clean and crisp with tannins that are fine but firm, just giving the expression some tension and linearity. Cinnamon and clove edge the bright blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with lovely acidity. This is plush, and firm at the same time, clean and clear, fragrant and ripe. Lots going on here with bitter dark chocolate too. It’s all happening. Needs time to relax but this is wonderfully nuanced and really quite captivating. Grippy and refreshing, leaves a lingering impression.
Vinous 95 points “The 2020 d’Issan is a gorgeous, wonderfully complete wine. Blueberry, sage, dried herbs, menthol, lavender and licorice are all beautifully knit together. Medium in body, with notable depth and freshness, Issan is all class. Silky tannins round out the long, vibrant finish. The 2020 d’Issan is the first vintage that incorporates Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec to compliment the traditional Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend.”

BEST-IN-CLASS

Chateau Malescot-St-Exupery, Margaux 2018 750ml $89 special, 14 bottles available
Vinous 95 points “The 2018 Malescot Saint Exupéry is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Powerful and incisive, the 2018 is a driving, potent Margaux that dazzles from the first taste. Iron, smoke, new leather, licorice, pressed rose petal and cedar all open in the glass, conveying tremendous nuance and a ton of character.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Malescot St. Exupery leaps from the glass with expressive scents of baked blackberries, Morello cherries and boysenberries with hints of blackcurrant cordial, dark chocolate, licorice and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate has impressive intensity without heaviness, delivering mouth-coating black fruits and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with a refreshing earthy lift.”

Buy Chateau Pavie-Macquin 2016 wine online | MillesimaChateau Pavie Macquin, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016 750ml $119 special, 14 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ points “Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Château Pavie Macquin comes from a cooler, later terroir on the upper plateau and checks in as 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new oak. This deep, inky-colored effort boasts a rock star bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, white truffle, graphite, and spice. Deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet also balanced, elegant, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, this seamless beauty needs a decade of cellaring and will keep for 4-5 decades.”
Vinous 98 points “The 2016 Pavie Macquin is a total stunner. Rich, lush and inviting, the 2016 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and mint are all given an extra kick of allure by silky tannins that caress the palate from start to finish. There is a level of precision and nuance here that is simply breathtaking. The purity of the fruit is just mind-boggling.”
James Suckling 97 points “This is very linear and driven with a precise and driven center palate. Full-bodied, tight and compact. Energetic and well formed. Give it at least five years. Try from 2024.”
Wine Advocate 96 points “Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pavie Macquin charges out of the glass with gregarious black cherries, warm blackberries and wild blueberries scents followed up by loads of red roses, baking spices, cedar chest and unsmoked cigars sparks plus a waft of wild thyme. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, revealing layer upon layer of cherries and berries flavors and tons of savory nuances, framed by firm yet exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing very long.”

Chateau Canon, Saint-Emilion 2010 750ml $179 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96+ points
“[Reviewed in 2020] Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Canon features wonderfully expressive notes of dried mulberries, stewed plums and baked black cherries with hints of mocha, bay leaves and fallen leaves. Full-bodied, opulent and super spicy, it has a plush texture with a racy line supporting the hedonic fruit, finishing with jaw-dropping persistence.”
Decanter 96 points “[Reviewed in 2020] You know you are on the Right Bank limestone plateau with this wine not by the fruit character, which is savoury, dark and concentrated, but by the juicy finish, which remains a little austere even after 10 years. After 15 minutes in the glass it opens up to be gloriously appetising and sapid (a word that is used much more frequently in French, and that sums up why limestone soils can transmit such appetising, drinkable and mouth watering flavours and textures, and why wines of this type work so well with food). At this stage it is the 2009 that delivers a readier-to-drink wine, but this is subtle and complex and has pulsating sense of purpose. Drinking Window 2022 – 2042.”

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, Margaux 2016 750ml $159 special, 19 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points
“I continue to love the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla, a thrillingly complete, flawlessly balanced, and borderline perfect Margaux that should be snatched up by readers. Notes of cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, and earth all give way to a full-bodied effort that has building tannins, no hard edges, and a level of purity and elegance that’s just about off the charts. Given its purity and balance, it’s accessible today, but it will be best with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 3-4 decades.”
Wine Advocate 97 points “Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla drifts effortlessly from the glass with fragrant rose hip tea, candied violets and chocolate box scents over a core of fresh blackcurrants and black cherry compote plus wafts of tobacco and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a great mid-palate of softly textured black and blue fruits with loads of floral nuances and a refreshing lift on the finish. The blend this year is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, harvested between September 20th and October 15th at an average yield of 45 hectoliters per hectare. It was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The alcohol is 13.5%, and the pH is 3.6.”
Vinous 97 points “The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla has an intense bouquet, one of the most perfumed that I encountered during my round of tastings. Violets infuse the ebullient black fruit, and traces of pencil lead emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied, very pure and supple, displaying wonderful balance and a satiny texture that belongs in a lingerie shop. This is an utterly seductive Margaux, one of the finest in recent years as this estate continues its upsurge in quality. Few 2016s will dole out such inhibited pleasure.”

Chateau Pichon Lalande, Pauillac 2018 750ml $279 special, 26 bottles available
#2 WINE SPECTATOR – WINE OF THE YEAR IN 2021
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ points
“The 2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is a monster of a wine with an almost Château Latour-like stature and structure, offering deep, backward, slightly reductive notes of blackcurrants, crushed stone, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf. Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon mixed with 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with masses of tannins, beautiful mid-palate density, and a great finish. As I’ve commented previously, the up-front, sexy style of the past (due to the larger Merlot content, I believe) has been replaced by a more regal, at times austere profile. Nevertheless, it’s still its own wine and very Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in style. This 2018 is going to need 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40+ years.”
Wine Spectator 98 points
“Offers a deep well of dark currant, blackberry paste and plum preserves fruit that needs time to unwind fully, as it’s shrouded in warm earth, tobacco, singed cedar, sweet bay leaf and savory notes. A ramrod of graphite adds to the strident, structured feel. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2030 through 2050. 13,000 cases made. — JM”
Wine Enthusiast 98 points “Cellar Selection. This famous estate at the southern end of Pauillac has produced a powerful wine. Packed blackberry fruits, laced with acidity, are just starting out on a long journey along with the tannins. The wine’s elegance is beautifully preserved within the structure. With considerable potential, the wine should not be drunk before 2027. -Roger Voss”
Wine Advocate 97+ points “The 2018 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot with a pH of 3.85, an IPT (total polyphenol index) of 87 and 14% alcohol. The grand vin represents 50% of the crop this year. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the gate with bold scents of baked plums, ripe blackcurrants and wild blueberries, followed by hints of cedar chest, pencil lead, bouquet garni and charcuterie, plus a waft of lilacs. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully crafted with its seamless freshness and firm, grainy tannins supporting the compelling, finely knit black fruits and savory nuances, finishing on a lingering fragrant-earth note. This will need a good 5 years to come around and should easily cellar for another 30 years or more.”

“Dusty florals and spices give way to yellow apples and hints of iodine as the NV Extra Brut evolves in the glass. Soothingly round and textured, it sweeps across the palate with ripe orchard fruits and a bead of creamy bubbles. This finishes remarkably clean and pure, leaving a resonance of ripe Anjou pear to linger on. The balance here is unreal. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter.”

Jim Maresh’s Tan Fruit project is one of the hottest tickets in the Valley. His 2019 releases captivated reviewers, and he’s received nothing but enthusiastic support since. This single-vineyard offers a richer and more open palate than the others on offer, making it a great earlier-drinking number that will elevate roast poultry and mushroom-based dishes.

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2022 Chardonnay Anela is singular and savory. Candied peaches and manuka honey mingle with dried sage, roasted hazelnuts and struck flint on the nose, and it teases you with slowly blossoming, spicy undertones. The palate is luxurious and satiny with kaleidoscopic, mouth-coating flavors, and its modest 30% new French oak is already well integrated. It has a foil of laser-like acidity, and its juiciness and hauntingly long finish draw you back to the glass again and again.”

“The 2018 AP #2 Spätlese from the Rosenberg vineyard has a beautiful touch of exotic fruit to its aromatic constellation, wafting from the glass in a very refined blend of kiwi, strawberry, lime zest, an almost salty expression of slate, apple blossoms and bee pollen. On the palate the wine is vibrant, complex, medium-full and filigreed, with a lovely dollop of fruit at the core, superb mineral drive and grip, zesty acids and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is such a classic example of middle Mosel Spätlese, with stunning interplay of slate minerality, pure, precise fruit and floral tones. Just lovely. 2020-2050+.”

Aromatics of dusty books, pencil lead and dried rose petals announce this beautiful Pinot Noir from one of Oregon’s definitive cru sites. The palate is silken, with fine country hints of rusticity. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish, it represents a terrific achievement from Bouland.”

Pax Mahle’s style journey has seen the extremes of richness and lightness, but this Hillsides Syrah is evocative yet restrained. Clocking in at only 12.5% abv, this pedigreed wine will wow with peppery and savory notes. Enjoy with herby stuffing and deep fried Turkey.
Pax Sonoma Hillsides Syrah Red, Russian River Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94+ points
“The 2022 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is a blend of several sites. Aging in cement helps retain a good bit of freshness, and that gives this wine quite a different feel from the other Syrahs, all of which are aged in neutral oak. The 2022 doesn’t have the immediacy or flashiness of the very best years, or of the other Syrahs in the range, but readers who can wait will find a wine of magnificent pedigree.”

Looking for a bold Piedmont wine from off the beaten path? Look no further than Vajra’s Freisa. Best described as the wild cousin to Nebbiolo, this fragrant red offers a full body with well-integrated tannins and acidity. Pair with fatty cuts of meat (including turkey legs and thighs!), buttered cornbreads, and creamy sauces.

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The G.D. Vajra 2021 Langhe Freisa Kyè has a delicate bouquet with intertwined berry and floral elements that could recall Japanese cherry blossom or even a Sicilian almond blossom. Beyond that, the wine offers an interlude of fresh blue fruits with elderberry and juniper. It shows terrific freshness and more tart flavors to close.”

Domaine Huet

Vouvray: one of the world’s most complex, age-worthy, terroir-driven, aromatically intense, and widely lauded white wines. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more wildly expressive and flexible grape than the Chenin Blanc that composes practically all white wines from Vouvray.

A pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, Domaine Huet is the most sought-after Vouvray producer. Today, horses still plough between the rows of their three vineyards, considered some of the greatest terroir in all of the Loire. These vineyards have very distinct personalities worth exploring. Wines from Le Haut-Lieu are their most approachable, offering softer and younger-drinking wines. Le Mont wines are dense, chock-full of minerals (or should we say chalk-full?), and the most age-worthy, per insiders. Clos du Bourg wines lie somewhere in between the others in terms of youthful approachability and minerality. Gaston Huet, the estate’s famous winemaker for 55 years, considered Clos du Bourg to be the greatest vineyard in Vouvray.

In the winery, the recipe remains relatively simple. Fermentation takes place half in stainless steel, half in old oak, without malolactic fermentation. After only six months, the wines are bottled and then laid to age in a cellar dug from tuffeau rock, no air conditioning required. From here the Huet work is done: the rest is up to nature, and what eventually tastes like divine intervention.

“Gorgeous crystallized ginger, dried quince, glazed pear and warm persimmon notes are seamlessly interwoven here, gliding through a lengthy finish that picks up a lilting green tea accent. Frankly off-dry but wonderfully pure. Drink now through 2035.”

“Bright, even exuberant in feel, with a parade of Jonagold apple, green melon, Bosc pear and quince flavors streaming through, gilded with heather, honeysuckle and verbena notes on the long, lithe finish. Remarkably elegant despite the off-dry style. Drink now through 2035.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Clos du Bourg’ Premiere Trie Moelleux, Loire 2016 750ml Was $69, Now $59, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 96 points
“This is ripe and broad, taking a slightly more power-driven approach, with a mix of tropical mango and papaya fruit, backed by orchard fruit accents of yellow apple and peach. The long, heather honey–accented finish has light piecrust and crystalized ginger hints. Best from 2020 through 2035.”

Oregon

“Compared with the 2021s, the 2022 Pinots generally show more density and more apparent tannins. Many display what I describe as a cherry or raspberry fruit leather quality to their texture and mouthfeel, the result of an erratic growing season that was among the coldest and then the hottest on record.” –Tim Fish, “Tasting Report: Oregon Ascendant,” Wine Spectator

#6 Top Wine of 2024-Wine Spectator: Domaine Drouhin

Veronique Boss-Drouhin

Few events have signaled the arrival of a new and notable wine region so heartily as the arrival of Burgundy’s famed Drouhin family in the Willamette Valley. The construction of the Drouhin family’s ten million dollar winery (in 1988 dollars, no less) announced the region as a place for serious winemaking. After the 1979 Paris Wine Olympics, where domaine Drouhin placed behind Eyrie Vineyard’s Pinot Noir, the late Robert Drouhin began investigating land in the Willamette Valley, finally settling on the Dundee Hills for their first American winery.

“Supple and elegantly structured, with detailed raspberry and cherry flavors accented by rose petal, brown baking spices and orange peel as this glides toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2032.” —Tim Fish, Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2024

Roserock Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, USA 2022 750ml $38 special, 36 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 95 Points “Editors’ Choice! This is a Goldilocks porridge wine where everything from the lemony acidity to the sturdy tannins was “just right.” It is medium- bodied fare, with blackberry, Thai basil and orange-zest flavors. Violet and cinnamon-stick aromas blend harmoniously with notes of dark raspberries and blueberry fruit leather. It is a stunning value.”

Brick House Vineyards ‘Evelyn’s’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $79 special, 12 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 97 Points “A best barrel selection, the 2022 Pinot Noir Evelyn’s is a reflective red hue and offers up notes of rosemary, black raspberries, cherries, dark stones, and pressed flowers. It has a refined and polished feel, with a seamless texture, ripe, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity, and a lovely flourish of iron-rich salty earth. Long on the palate, it’s a pleasure to taste now, and it’s going to age gracefully over the next 15 or so years. 175 cases were produced.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 95 Points “The 2022 Pinot Noir Evelyn’s tempts the imagination with a cascade of dried flowers and exotic spices accentuating ground clove and peppery black cherries. Cool-toned and racy in style, it sweeps across the palate with ease, taking on a youthful tension as its tart red berry fruits slowly saturate. It leaves the senses stained in primary concentration as hints of sour citrus add lovely freshness and rosy inner florals slowly recede. Simply stunning.”

Cameron Winery

Cameron Winery ‘Arley’s Leap’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 18 bottles available
Winery Note “Sourced from the highest elevation plot of Pinot Noir at Abbey Ridge, Arley’s Leap is comprised of the famous Martin Ray Clones. These vines yield small, variable clusters and regularly produce some of our most complex wines. The plot is named after Bill and Julia Wayne’s old dog Arley, who survived a jump from a second story balcony when startled by a cat. The nose has a compelling balance of savory and fruit aromas — black olive and plum, cherry and leather, bergamot, violet and salumi. The palette is round and warm, with a bright, mouthwatering finish.”

K Vintners Syrah Motor City Kitty MCK, Walla Walla, United States 2020 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 98 Points “This is a serious and intense syrah. Complex notes of chocolate, blackberries, black cherries, cedar and nutmeg here, with cracked pepper, rosemary and dried lavender. Evolving. Firm, tight and compact, with a full body. Beautiful freshness, too. More structure here. Try from 2025.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 96 Points “Dark and viral in the glass with savory exotic spices, crushed ashen stones, grilled sage and smoked meats, the 2020 Syrah Motor City Kitty (MCK) makes a big first impression. This is texturally deep with a wave of mineral-tinged black fruits accelerated by sour citrus, as sweet herbal tones form toward the close. The 2020 tapers off with a potent concentration of wild berries and smoky earth, as gently grippy tannins tug at the palate. There’s simply so much going on here, and so much more to come through cellaring.”
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 95+ Points ” Floral, focused and mineral-driven, the 2020 MCK Syrah offers dark red fruits with delightful red and pink peppercorn notes. Full-bodied and with 15% alcohol, the palate firms up with gripping tannins to reveal a rich mineral tension that lingers on the long, boozy finish. The MCK Syrah will remain a powerhouse and please New World Syrah lovers around the globe.”

Mauro Molino Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy 2022 750ml $19.50 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 91 Points “This wine presents classic notes of raspberry, sour cherry and wild herbs, reflecting on the palate with raspberry seeds, green herbs and dusty tannins. Its traditional yet nuanced characteristics offer a rich and complex finish.”

France

Billecart-Salmon Brut, Champagne, France 2008 750ml $139 special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 97 Points “A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, and as such is already extremely approachable. The flavour spectrum encompasses toast, oyster shell, citrus, cream and a flinty, mineral depth. There’s supreme balance and elegance here, combined with a hidden underlying power that will continue to emerge and broaden with time. The finish is dry and long.”

Chateau Suduiraut, Sauternes, France 2016 750ml $79 special, 6 bottles available
Chateau Suduiraut, Sauternes, France 2016 375ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 Points “The 2016 Suduiraut is fabulous. Crème br?lée, passion fruit, tangerine peel and exotic floral notes all race out of the glass. I marvel at how Suduiraut can deliver so much flavor intensity and yet remain so gracious and classy. The 140 grams of residual sugar are very well integrated. This is such a gorgeous wine.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “As to the Sauternes, the 2016 Château Suduiraut boasts a medium gold color and a fresh, clean, beautifully perfumed bouquet of orange blossom, honeyed pineapple, and flowers, with notable botrytis, which can be lacking in a number of Sauternes in 2016. With moderate acidity, a fleshy, full-bodied texture, and loads of fruits, it’s geared more toward drinking over the coming 10-15 years than any over-the-top cellaring.”

Olivares Altos

For over a century, the Olivares family has been crafting these intensely flavored reds from the sunbaked vineyard lands of Jumilla in South Easterly Spain.

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain 2021 750ml $14.50 special, 24 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 91 Points “The 2021 Altos de la Hoya is a varietal Monastrell from dry-farmed vines on poor limestone-rich soils with some 5% Garnacha in the blend. It has notes of ripe berries, aromatic herbs and an earthy touch and a round palate with juicy fruit and fine tannins. It’s very pleasant and fresh. 200,000 bottles produced.”

Jonathan Didier Pabiot Pouilly-Fume Aubaine, Loire, France 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 19 bottles available
Vinopolnote “Aubaine” is French for bargain, which is accurate, but maybe undersells the wine itself. It is not cheap, but it is a meticulously crafted and incredibly versatile white wine worth every hard earned penny. Due to its extended lees aging after fermentation this wine provides a rounder mouthfeel than we were expecting, but with more than enough mouthwatering acidity to balance it out.

Expect big hits of juicy lemongrass and spicy ginger on the nose and palette along with gooseberry and grapefruit that shines through on the palette. This will be a great wine to pair with Southeast Asian cuisines like Thai or Vietnamese. Also, pair this with baked brie, oysters, stuffing or really anything from the Sea.”

WAS $139
Sierra Cantabria Finca El Bosque Rioja 2019 750ml $119 special, 4 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points “The 2019 Finca el Bosque is another single vineyard and comes from a site on a deep, gravelly escarpment overlooking the Ebro River. It offers more ripe blue fruits and cassis as well as sappy herbs, flowers, violets, graphite, and chalky minerality. It shows a more elegant, flawlessly balanced, incredibly pure style on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, wonderful overall balance, and no hard edges. This is pure class. Give bottles 3-4 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades of more.”

WAS $189
De Venoge Louis XV Brut 2006 750ml $169 special, 24 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 Points “The assemblage of the 2006 Louis XV Brut Millésimé is about the same as the 1995 and 1996—composed of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from grand cru villages. The only difference is that the Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (10% of the assemblage) spent 12 months in oak barrels. Disgorged in January 2017 (dosage: six grams per liter), the 2006 has a golden color and opens with a deep, ripe, elegant and vinous bouquet with toasty and chalky lemon and fresh white fruit flavors. On the palate, this is an intense, round, fresh and complex Louis XV with great purity and finesse. The wine opens on the palate like a soufflé, coating the whole palate without any pressure or weight—gorgeous! This is a delicate and fresh yet well-structured and persistent Louis XV whose intense and long but weightless finish reveals lovely, almost juicy fruit concentration with perfectly integrated freshness and lasting minerality that seems to give additional structure.”

WAS $299
Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy 2010 750ml $269 special, 2 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 Points “The 2010 Redigaffi is even more impressive with seamless integration of ripe fruit and oak spice that meet each other perfectly in the middle. It soars to new heights of elegance and power, imparting beautiful tones of black fruit, polished river stone, bacon fat and black pepper as it makes its steady ascent. The mouthfeel is fleshy and generous and there is plenty of backbone here to carry the wine forward throughout the years.”

WAS $379
Dal Forno Romano Vigneto Monte Lodoletta, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, Italy 2012 750ml $329 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “A decadent nose of treacle tart, chocolate, tar, tons of black fruit such as blackberries and mulberries and even ash and licorice. A dense, layered mouthfeel makes for a full-bodied palate that’s explosive yet somehow so refined and pretty all at the same time. The finish goes on and on. Incredible now, but better to wait for this giant to settle well into 2020.”

WAS $599
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Langhe-Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy 2017 750ml $499 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Spectator 96 Points “This tightly wound red is dense with black cherry, black currant, plum, tar and iron flavors as well as tannins. Shows a lot of power and persistence, with all the components in the right proportion, ending with a long, resonant aftertaste. Needs time. Best from 2024 through 2048. 300 cases imported. — BS”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ Points “The 2017 growing season saw a couple of violent hail events in the Barbaresco appellation, and this celebrated vineyard suffered some damage during a storm that hit on July 19th. Yields were reduced, but the wine holds its own thanks to the careful fruit selection process put in place by the Gaja family. Their 2017 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is a shade richer in terms of flavor concentration, as is always the case with fruit from this slightly warmer growing site. However, like the other two single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions, this wine reveals a thin, sharp and nervous personality that is driven in large part by tannic firmness and acidity. Sorì San Lorenzo adds lots of dark mineral definition to cassis, wild cherry, rose and Provence herbs. Like the other wines, it needs extra cellar aging time.”

WAS $699
Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Riserva, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Italy 2016 750ml $619 special, 5 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 99 Points “Wow, here is a vintage I’ve been anxiously waiting to try. The 2016 growing season was one of the best in recent memory in Montalcino, and if we look back in time, this vintage marks the year Biondi-Santi was sold to a French group. The prestigious 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva proves a mighty collector’s bottle that will undoubtedly gain in complexity and depth with careful bottle age. The wine offers wild nuances of forest berry and tart cherry, and there are herbal side notes as well as floral tones of dried violet and lilac. The tannins are soft, powdery and feel like they melt away on the palate.”

WAS $1,099
Dominio de Pingus ‘Pingus’, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2020 750ml $949 special, 3 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 99 Points “The bottled 2020 Pingus has settled, and the strong Mediterranean accent that was quite strong early on seems to have calmed down. The wine shows more of the serious Pingus character and is harmonious, balanced and elegant, perhaps because of the time it spent in oak vat (starting this year, it is not only in barrique). It feels very complete and intense but without weight or heaviness, and the fruit shows very clean and focused. Peter Sisseck compared it with the 2000, a wine that for him transcends the vintage; it showcases the balance (wines like 1996, 2000, 2012, 2016 and 2018). The quality of the tannins is stunning, which make the wine very elegant and balanced, and it has good freshness (even some red fruit!). This is exceptionally good, but somehow my heart didn’t beat like with the wines he compared them with… 7,500 bottles were filled in July 2022.”

WAS $1,999
Domaine Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune, France 2021 750ml $1,699 special, 2 bottles available
Burghound 95-98 Points “Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren’t quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it’s almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required.”96 POINTS “Round and vibrant, this white leans into the citrusy spectrum of flavors, offering lemon, orange peel and yuzu notes accented by apple and stone. Linear and intense on the superlong finish, where the flavors expand and linger. Best from 2025 through 2035.”

Remelluri bottles at VinopolisTelmo Rodríguez is one of the most talented and well-respected winemakers in all of Spain. He spearheads several highly praised projects around the country, including Ladeiras do Xil, Pegaso, and Molino Real, but nothing compares to the wines of his family’s estate: Remelluri.

Originally founded in the 14th century, the estate was purchased by Rodríguez’s father in the 1960s. Telmo and his sister, Amaia Rodríguez Hernandorena, took over the estate in 2010, the same year the estate became fully organic. It’s located in Rioja Alavesa, the smallest part of the region. Wines here are known for their intensity and power, which Rodríguez couples with his preference for French oak over American (which he finds too aggressive). To further showcase the fruit and terroir, he only uses sparing amounts of new oak.

Amaia is the viticulturalist for the estate. Under her expert care, the vines along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño Mountains are organically farmed using regenerative and agroforestry practices, which emphasizes diversity from roots to canopy. She re-converted the Garnacha vines to their traditional bush-growth and increased co-plantings of alternative varieties.

Together, Telmo and Amaia’s iconic wines show unrivaled finesse and terroir, and offer some of the most profound expressions in all of Rioja.

Lindes de Remelluri (“Borders of Remelluri”):

The Lindes de Remelluri wines are a collaborative project with neighboring growers in the villages surrounding the Granja Remelluri estate. The project was developed to showcase the unique terroirs of the region. In the 2020 vintage, Telmo expanded the project to encompass six of Rioja’s most important villages: Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos, Peciña, Rivas de Tereso, and Salinillas de Buradón.

Labastida represents cooler, higher-elevation sites offering a lower-alcohol wine with complex layers of acidity, perfumed red fruit, and tannin. The Viñedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra is a rich and silky wine, offering a sumptuous red from the rocky soils. For the Ábalos wine, Telmo sourced fruit from the Marqués de Legarda estate. With its high proportion of Graciano, this organic red is stern and austere, promising a rewarding wine with some cellaring.

Peciña, to quote De Maision, offers “perfumed and floral aromatics with notes of Mediterranean herbs, taut acidity, and austere tannins from the high-altitude vineyards.” Rivas de Tereso is a remarkably small hamlet home to only 30 people. Here the limestone soils give a unique mineral impression on the herbal and floral profile. Lastly, Salinillas de Buradón offers up a stony profile from the bush-trained Garnacha and Tempranillo vines grown in the unique combination of quartz, iron-rich clay and blue marl soils.

It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in barrels of different sizes and origins for 13 months. This is ripe and expressive, with a juicy palate and chalky tannins. 57,800 bottles and 490 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2021.”

“The 2019 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente de la Srra. is mostly Tempranillo, with some Garnacha, Graciano and other local grapes from external suppliers from the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, from 38 plots that total 15.38 hectares of vineyards worked by 14 different grape growers. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels of different sizes for 13 months. It feels riper and more candied than the one from Labastida, round and juicy, with ripe flavors and a dry finish.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The serious and austere new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Ábalos was produced with grapes on marl and limestone from the Marqués de Legarda, who is mentioned on the label. It’s a blend of 73% Tempranillo, 17% Graciano, 6% Garnacha and 4% other varieties, presented in a straight Bordeaux bottle. It reflects more the character of Haro than the Rioja Alavesa, wines with more Graciano. It’s medium to full-bodied with 14.17% alcohol and has fine-grained, chalky tannins. 13,205 bottles were filled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The perfumed and floral 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Peciña is the smallest cuvée from a narrow amphitheater in the parish of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 25% Garnacha and therefore presented in a Burgundian bottle, reflecting the high percentage of Garnacha. It has notes of Mediterranean herbs, some coolness from the high altitude of the vineyards and some austerity in the tannins. 7,149 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“Rivas de Tereso are parishes of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, but the difference with the 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso is that the vineyards are at higher altitude and the percentage of Garnacha is much higher here (38%), so there’s more mountain character and more herbal notes in the wine. It has 57% Tempranillo and some 5% other varieties. Despite a moderate 13.95% alcohol, the nose shows good ripeness, and there is some wilderness here, perhaps a little more rusticity too. The soils are very stony and rich in limestone, and the altitude gives the wine an austere twist. 19,742 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón, a parish of Labastida, was produced with a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha and 5% other varieties from south-facing vineyards behind the Sierra de la Cantabria, the last vineyards that they recovered on quartz salt, gypsum and red clay soils. These are the last grapes to be picked, and the wine has 14.22% alcohol but doesn’t show any heat. It comes through as serious, shy and austere, a little closed at first. The tannins are a little rustic, but the wine has a strong mineral streak that made it my favorite from the lot. 20,114 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:

Evesham Wood

After studying wine in Germany, the late Russ Raney founded the Evesham Wood winery in 1986. He took his inspiration from Burgundy and Alsace, planting Pinot Noir and aromatic white varieties. He was an inspiring figure in the Valley who influenced many folks in the industry until his passing in 2022.

After working with Russ for several years, Erin Nuccio took over as winemaker and owner in 2010 while developing his own original label, Haden Fig. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land.

The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, is planted on an east facing slope with iron-rich soils overlooking the Willamette River. It is certified organic and, as a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, is dry farmed. The winery is certified organic, too.

While the Evesham Wood wines tend toward elegance and the Haden Fig wines towards more fruit-forward notes, both are expressive examples of their (all dry-farmed) vineyards. Erin’s aim is to continue in the style of minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves.

We’re proud to carry an extensive lineup from this benchmark estate, as well as gorgeous selections from Haden Fig. Don’t miss this Evesham Wood Pinot on our Close-Out Sale!

Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“What a beauty! The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec blossoms in the glass with a gorgeous mix of dusty violets and roses complemented by autumnal spice, giving way to citrus-tinged wild berries. This sweeps across the palate with finesse, lifted and ethereal, with shades of blue and purple inner florals accentuating dark red fruits. It finishes long and hauntingly floral with a tactile mineral crunch and coating of gently grippy tannins. For lovers of old-school Oregon Pinot, the 2021 is dreamy.”

Cameron Winery ‘Arley’s Leap’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Note “Sourced from the highest elevation plot of Pinot Noir at Abbey Ridge, Arley’s Leap is comprised of the famous Martin Ray Clones. These vines yield small, variable clusters and regularly produce some of our most complex wines. The plot is named after Bill and Julia Wayne’s old dog Arley, who survived a jump from a second story balcony when started by a cat. The nose has a compelling balance of savory and fruit aromas — black olive and plum, cherry and leather, bergamot, violet and salumi. a bright, mouthwatering finish.”

Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez

As one of the most important and influential winemakers in the New Spain movement and recipient of numerous awards from European wine magazines, Raul Perez is equal parts scientist and artist. He is, according to Pedro Ballesteros Torres of Decanter Magazine, “the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius” and who are we to disagree? Raul Perez has revealed an unparalleled level of quality from his home region, bringing a Burgundian level of sophistication and to the Mencias of Bierzo.

The wines are stunning.

These are the lowest listed prices in the USA:

Raul Perez Ultreia de Paluezas, Bierzo, Spain 2021 750ml $75 special, 8 bottles available
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 Points “The Ultreia bottling that called my attention from the moment the wines were poured is the 2021 Ultreia Paluezas. I’ve only tasted a couple of vintages of this before, but Raúl Pérez remembers that it has called my attention every time. The distinct feature here is that the plot has limestone soils, which are very rare in Bierzo, and the majority of the place is on slate soils. So, this has the special finesse and elegance of the limestone, and it’s perfumed and elegant and has a velvety palate with very fine, chalky tannins. from only 0.4 hectares or so, and it even has a small part with Palomino; he produces one 225-liter barrel and a 500-liter one.”

Raul Perez Ultreia Rapolao Mencia, Bierzo, Spain 2020 750ml $59 special, 5 bottles available
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96 Points “There is a creamy touch in the 2020 Ultreia El Rapolao, perhaps because one of the three barrels used was a little newer. Mencía is so delicate and finicky that a small detail like that is noticeable in the finished wine. The grape is also very sensitive to the picking date. The texture is finely tannic and with an herbal touch, with exactly the same mouthfeel as the 2019. It ends with a bitter touch in the finish.”

Raul Perez ‘Ultreia de Valtuille’, Bierzo, Spain 2021 750ml $69 special, 36 bottles available
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 Points “The 2021 Ultreia Valtuille was produced with the clay part of their Villegas plot, as the sandy part was used for the new Ultreia Villegas bottling but introduced the lower part of the vineyard with more soil and more clay. They produced more or less the same amount as in previous years, some 18 barrels but in 2021, they introduced barrels for part of the wine, and in this first year, the lightning was new (they used it to ferment a white before). They also started renewing their barrels, so the wines show a little more oak than usual It has moderate alcohol and mellow acidity, and it seems like. the longer cycle and the slow ripening burned some acidity.”

…also Available from Raul Perez:

Raul Perez Ultreia Saint Jacques, Bierzo, Spain 2021 750ml $21.90 special, 25 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 Points“The biggest volume of the winery is the 2021 Ultreia Saint Jacques, which represents some 170,000 bottles, and according to Raúl Pérez, it’s the most difficult wine to make here. They now work a lot to produce this wine, a blend of 11 wines selected from the 17 they made. It’s a wine that represents Bierzo and is from a year when they used more grapes from sandy soils. It has 13.16% alcohol and a pH of 3.66; percent of the wine matured in barrel and the rest in truncated oak vats.”

Raul Perez ‘Ultreia de Valtuille’, Bierzo, Spain 2016 750ml $89 special, 4 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96+ Points “There are only 1,000 bottles of the 2016 Ultreia Valtuille (the new name, as all labels have been simplified and cleaned up, and some of the names have even been shortened). 24 months in barrel. Despite its concentration and power, it has great freshness and perfume. You don’t find excessive tannin, and it seems like the time in barrel has really polished the edges.

Badia a Coltibuono

“[2021] is a truly magical vintage where everything comes together. In a world in which so many wines have become either hard to find or very expensive, Chianti Classico remains one of the very best values in the world. Readers looking for wines to buy by the case that can be opened with minimal fanfare but that also deliver exceptional complexity and pedigree will find so much to admire in the 2021s.” -Antonio Galloni, “Chianti Classico: The Brilliant 2021s & Variable 2020s,” Vinous Media

You might already be familiar with Coltibuono’s exquisitely lithe and fresh Chianti Classicos, but this bottle is something different. What distinguishes their RS bottling from the standard release? Well, this wine represents what winemaker Roberto Stucchi considers his signature wine: a 100% Sangiovese blend of Coltibuono’s very best vineyards. This is an immensely drinkable wine that features more structure than their standard classico, making it pretty for your upcoming dinner parties.
Badia a Coltibuono ‘Roberto Stucchi RS’ Cultusboni, Chianti Classico DOCG, Italy 2021 750ml $16.50 special, 36 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous-91 Points “The 2021 Chianti Classico RS Cultusboni is rich, boisterous and quite appealing. I would open it in advance to allow some of the youthful brawn to soften. A burst of red-toned fruit, pipe tobacco, cedar and sweet spice makes a strong first impression.

Finishes long and gently chewy, with the floral and spice notes repeating.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 Points “Full-bodied, rich and highly textural, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Telegramme is atypically concentrated and dense, reflecting the addition of more old-vine Grenache to the cuvée. Black cherries, salted licorice and dark chocolate all make appearances, and the wine finishes long and velvety.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points “Bottled early in May, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Télégramme offers a big, up-front, impressive style with classic red and blue fruits as well as licorice, peppery herbs, and crushed stone-like minerality. Historic Greatness: The Wines of Feudi di San Gregorio

Campania. It was one of history’s greatest wine regions but now it is all but forgotten.

The wines from Campania were praised by poets of antiquity and collected by Kings. Falernum in particular was so highly regarded it has been described as the first cult wine, comparable in its stature and price to Domaine Romanee Conti today. The wine was made from grape varieties that still grow in Campania to this day like Aglianico, Falanghina, and Greco de Tuffo. It was strong stuff, said to light at the touch of a flame, a property that Pliny the Elder noted “you shall not see in any other wine.”

Enter Feudi di San Gregorio. No other winemaker has done as much to restore the region to its former glory as Antonio Capaldo of Feudi di San Gregorio. His wines balance their wild rusticity with enough finesse and sophistication to satisfy any modern wine drinker’s palette.

Feudi di San Gregorio Serpico Rosso Irpinia, Campania, Italy 2015 750ml $69 special, 35 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 Points “There are darker tones of purple and black fruit and some savory chocolate flavors as well in the 2015 Irpinia Aglianico Serpico. This is an ambitious and deeply layered wine that peels back to reveal more spice, tar and volcanic ash hidden deep within its core. I would suggest some more bottle age with this wine, however, as the mouthfeel is sharp and etched in its youth. 18-month aging regime in medium-toast French oak.
Falstaff 94 Points “Bright, rich ruby red with a slightly brightening edge. On the nose ripe sour cherries and plums, then liquorice and coffee. Very concentrated on the palate, with strong tannins, juicy, well balanced, with a long finish.”
