The combination of old and incredible vineyard sites, meticulous winemaking and a commitment to producing only the finest wines yields exactly what you’d hope: dry, white wines of depth and complexity, with grace and mineral power. The Rieslings offer floral and mineral flavors that are both intense and furtive.
 
But Riesling isn’t the only focus. Von Winning is one of the preeminent producers of Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Germany is not where you’d expect to find great Sauvignon Blanc, but the wines will make a believer out of anyone. These are rich, textural examples that move beyond varietal characteristics and into unique territory. Their closest comparison is probably the top Sauvignon of Friuli (eg, Miani, Ronco del Gnemiz), or the very best estates in Austria.
 
Farming in their vineyards scattered around Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg is minimal-input, much like the gentle winemaking, and the estate is practicing organic. The wines are fermented and some are aged in neutral oak of various formats, imparting a depth and richness to the wines without sacrificing precision.

Grosse Lage comes from the plateau above Deidesheim and owes its density and complexity to 65-year-old vines growing on sandstone and limestone. The must is fermented spontaneously in 500-liter oak barrels, and the wine is maturing on the lees. The brilliantly clear and radiant sample opens with a deep, intense and elegant, still oaky but complex and fruit-intense bouquet that gives rise to the highest hopes. Rich and intense but also fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, mineral and textured Kalkofen that obviously wants to be a Meursault or Montrachet yet with the weapons of Riesling and also Buntsandstein. Whatever it is, this is an excellent and promising Kalkofen whose development and capacity I’d love to follow for at least a decade. The wine is dense and tight but also fresh and juicy and provided with very fine tannins and sustainable mineral acidity. Highly promising indeed. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is a round, lush and salty-savory Riesling classic that reveals a long, tight, saline and finely grippy finish. As per the vintage, this is a rather lean, straightforward but tensioned Riesling that will show its class in the years to come. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in November 2022. The wines that Elio Grasso’s son, Gianluca, has been making over the last decade and a half have catapulted the estate into the very top tier of Piemontese producers.  These are Barolos that are compelling, thrilling wines; made in a style which combines modern and traditional techniques into something very much the estate’s own.
 
The Ginestra Casa Maté is a bit more structured, built for a longer time in the cellar, and the Gavarini Chiniera is the earlier drinker, slightly more delicate of the pair. 
 
Elvio Cogno
 
Elvio Cogno put the Ravera cru on the map. Born and raised in Novello, the village associated with the famous vineyard, Elvio comes from a long line of grape growers in the region but was the first to turn the dream of winemaking into a reality. For years, he collaborated with Marcarini (including crafting the legendary 1964 vintage from the Brunate vineyard, one of the first Barolos released as a single vineyard).
 
In 1990, he purchased Cascina Nuova, an under-performing but historic estate, and started making classically-styled wines under his own name from the Ravera cru.
 
His masterpieces elevated the region as a whole, no easy task for an already famous region. No wineries in Novello have surpassed the well-deserved fame of Elvio Cogno. Though the original master passed away in 2016, the estate is in the able hands of his daughter and son-in-law, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore (winemaker since 1996). From their entry level “Cascina Nuova” Barolo up to the Riservas from the choicest holdings, these are wines that will appeal to every lover of Barolo.
 
Luigi Einaudi
 
Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, this is a deeply historic estate. Einaudi rose to fame as a politician, eventually becoming the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Italy in 1948. He purchased the estate while working as a university professor and never missed a harvest. He sold his grapes at first, waiting nearly twenty years before building a winery.
 
Today, the estate is still highly respected. It owns over 60 hectares of vines spread across twelve properties. Although the bulk of production are Dogliani Dolcettos, the Barolos are where the craft winemaking shines. The original property is at the Terlo cru, where the single-vineyard Costa Grimaldi Barolo is sourced from. This site is almost 1,000 feet above sea level with soils rich in carlcareous marl. Their holdings in the cru of Cannubi also produce shining examples of Barolo admired for their longevity in the cellar.

A pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, Domaine Huet is the most sought-after Vouvray producer. They craft producing wonderful and empirically age-worthy wines not to be overlooked: affordable, benchmark luxuries.
 
Today, horses still plough between the rows of their three vineyards, considered some of the greatest terroir in all of the Loire. These vineyards have very distinct personalities worth exploring. Wines from Le Haut-Lieu are their most approachable, offering softer and younger-drinking wines. Le Mont wines are dense, chock-full of minerals (or should we say chalk-full?), and the most age-worthy, per insiders. Clos du Bourg wines lie somewhere in between the others in terms of youthful approachability and minerality. Gaston Huet, the estate’s famous winemaker for 55 years, considered Clos du Bourg to be the greatest vineyard in Vouvray.
 
In the winery, the recipe remains relatively simple. Fermentation takes place half in stainless steel, half in old oak, without malolactic fermentation. After only six months, the wines are bottled and then laid to age in a cellar dug from tuffeau rock, no air conditioning required. From here the Huet work is done: the rest is up to nature, and what eventually tastes like divine intervention.

Rather demure at the moment, this enormously structured wine has a great aging potential and I recommend to store it for 6-10 years, at least.”

Seamless, tranquil and un-showy, its sweetness lends silkiness to its core and allows it to bloom. Aromatically, there’s not much going on here at the moment, but it is quite young and has ample length and purity. This is satisfying, calm and meditative, with fine texture and a cooling minty note on the long finish. It was only bottled three weeks ago, but I’m a fan already. The 2023 finished at 74 grams per liter of residual sugar, with a pH of 3.45. 850 bottles produced. (Drink between 2025-2046).”

Light, fresh and tensioned on the palate, that is very pure and salty but also tight and concentrated. The 2016 Le Mont reveals crystalline acidity, delicate but serious tannin grip and a long, complex, stimulating finish. This is Chenin Blanc full of energy and aging potential, provided with concentration, lingering salinity and vibrancy. This is a fascinating Le Mont, surely the top wine of Huet’s excellent 2016 series. Bottled with 92 grams of residual sugar, it tastes less sweet than the corresponding Clos du Bourg. Tasted February 2018.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97-98 points “The intensely yellow colored 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is highly concentrated and complex on the nose that exhibits candied lemon zest and chutney aromas along with calcareous and walnut notes. Sweet (really sweet!) yet refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous yet piquant and firmly structured, greatly tensioned and salty 1ère Trie with pineapple flavors on the finely tannic and energetic, very sustainable finish. The 2020 has great aging potential, and I would never serve it too young. When will it really start to show its best? I don’t know, but you can’t go wrong to check the wine again after 10 years. Tasted as a final sample shortly before bottling in May 2021.”
