Champion of Cru Nero d’Avola

Gulfi’s old vines grow using the albarello system,
an ancient method of vine training involving no wires or other system of support,
and resulting in a goblet (albarello) shaped growth. 
       Nero d’Avola was all the rage in the wine bars of Rome a decade or two ago, and, extending to foreign shores as a trendy red wine option for a while. But, like all trends, it ran its course and, in this case, has gone towards mass, industrialized wine production. But this is not a variety to be taken lightly, as, in the right hands, it can produce terrifically expressive, exquisite wines. Such is the case of the Nero d’Avolas from Gulfi, who has become a champion of this variety’s potential for producing world class wines.

Germany’s Rheingau is pure magic!  The 50th degree of latitude runs right through it, marking one of the northernmost regions of viable viticulture.  While near the entirety of the Rhine River’s 700+ miles flow in a northward direction between the Swiss Alps and the North Sea, a small 18 mile stretch of the river zigs from east to due west, allowing for a small group of prized south-facing vineyards.   This is the Rheingau.  And here sits the village of Rüdesheim, home to some of the most notable vineyards in all of Germany – some dating as far back as the 15th century.

Traditional Rioja Since 1932

Rioja’s wine origins lie in a 19th century southward migration from Bordeaux, during that region’s initial phylloxera epidemic. At the time, a number of Bordeaux négociants set up shop in the Rioja, bringing with them French techniques. With the end of the phylloxera devastation, the Bordelais went home, but their standards and techniques remained to inform Rioja’s wine trade.

Much of today’s traditional Rioja winemaking is centered around the old railway station in the city of Haro. Within close proximity to one another, a venerable lineup of great names can be found, including Tondonia, la Rioja Alta, CVNE, and, of course, the historic Bodega Muga, founded in 1932. Still under the ownership of its founding family, Muga farms 250 hectares of their own vines in the La Rioja Alta region (where Haro is located) and have long-standing contracts with the independent owners of another 150 hectares.
