In 1825, Pierre Faiveley founded what is now Domaine Faiveley as a negociant firm based in Nuits St. Georges.  Domaine Faiveley has since purchased 300 acres of vineyards throughout the Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune and Cotes Chalonnaise.  It is now the largest owner of classified vineyards in these regions, and includes several prized monopoles in these holdings.

Since 2005, Erwan Faiveley has headed the company; and the changes have been dramatic.  He has shifted the style of wine away from heavily extracted wines with fierce tannins to a smoother, more fruit-dominate style.  His goal is to convert Faiveley exclusively to domain wines, growing all of their own grapes.  The negociant wines now make up only approximately 20% of the vineyards from which the grapes are sourced, and are only sold only under the differentiated Joseph Faiveley label.

Wine Spectator 95 points #20 Top 100 2012 “Elegant, with a deep purple color and complex, refined flavors of dark currant, ginger, blackberry and dark plum. Boysenberry and licorice notes chime in as well, lingering on the suave and silky finish. Fruity and complex. Best from 2016 through 2034.”

Wine Advocate 92 points  “A superb entry level effort that has not only layers of fruit and texture, but solid back-end structure, the 2010 Red Wine is a declassified blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, yet has 15% Merlot and a splash of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in there as well.

The wines known collectively as ‘Port’ originate within the regulated appellation of the Douro (aka Denominação de Origem Controlada or DOC); which is in the valley of the Douro River, a continuation of the Duero River of Spain on whose banks lay the powerful red appellations of Ribera del Duero and Toro. Established in 1756, the port wine producing Douro region is the third oldest protected wine region in the world after the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in Hungary, established in 1730, and Chianti, in 1716. Within its eponymous DOC, the Douro has carved a deep valley with slopes as steep as Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone or the Mosel in Germany. The soil structure here is schist, metamorphic stratified rock of the Cambrian era, also found in Cote-Rotie and in Priorato in Spain.
