Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine 2012 ($14.95) $11.90 special
John Gilman 93 points “The 2012 Muscadet regular bottling from Marc Ollivier’s Domaine de la Pepiere is a really beautiful wine and one of the most complete and classic examples of this bottling in several vintages. The bouquet is deep, pure and vibrant, offering up scents of lime, green apple, briny and stony soil tones, citrus peel and a nice touch of dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure and focused; good acids and outstanding length and grip on the well-balanced and wide open finish. This is clearly a wine that was made from outstanding selection and low yields, and it should prove to be quite long-lived, despite its acids being more ripe and supportive in nature, rather than bracing and youthful.”

Savigny Les Beaune
Savigny-les-Beaune is a large village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, tucked away in a valley a few kilometers off the main highway north of Beaune. The name of the area has been altered throughout history, with the name Savigny les Beaune taking preference in the mid 1800’s. The last part of the name reflects the village’s location, just a short distance away from the town of Beaune. Not only is this slightly obscure village home to some brilliant terroirs at the villages and premier cru level, it also one of the region’s more prolific appellations, producing more wine annually than most in Burgundy.
The village of Savigny-lès-Beaune is stretched out along the small river Rhoin.

Alsace Wine Region and Domaine Marcel Deiss
Alsace is isolated from the rest of France to the west by the Vosges mountain range and separated from Germany to the east by the Rhine River. Mountain-side vineyards typically contain sandstone and granite, while the plains are composed of clay, limestone and marlstone.  The best sites are along the foothills and are south-west or south-east facing to receive the most sun.
 
White wine predominates in Alsace due to the cooler climate.  Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat are the most common single varietal wines produced.  In Alsace, single varietal wines are labeled by grape variety.  But varietal blends have a historic presence, and some of the vignerons are rebirthing these as the truest reflection of the best vineyards.

Robert Parker 95 points “The 2011 Chardonnay Private Reserve, which all comes from the Gamble Ranch, is a knock-out wine. Winemaker Laurie Hook seems to have backed off some of the aggressive new oak that this cuvee possessed twenty or so years ago. The result is a wine that has some wood, but is more renowned for its beautiful buttery citrus and hints of white peaches, apricots and tropical fruit. Impressively textured, full-bodied, deep, fresh, pure and well-balanced, this is a great example of Napa Chardonnay. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.”
