Nicolas Maillart’s Staff Favorite Champagne

We’ve carried the Champagnes of Nicolas Maillart in the past, but were blown away when tasting through them recently—enough that we’ve gone deep on the entire lineup. These are some of the most exciting wines from Champagne that we’ve tasted in some time, and they’re at prices that keep them firmly within reach.

Nicolas Maillart’s family has a grape-growing tradition in Champagne that dates back to at least the 18th century -some documents indicate the family has been farming grapes since the 1500s.

Lisini’s Classic Brunello

Including 2011 & 2012 Ugolaia

Lisini is a classic producer, both in style and in that they were one of the original 25 wineries in the Brunello Consortium. They’re known for powerful wines that see extensive aging in large casks and bottle before release, which softens their textures and gives them wonderful secondary flavors. These are reference-point Brunellos that belong in the cellar of any collector, particularly the under-the-radar (and under-$100) single-vineyard Ugolaia.

Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale ‘Les Chetillons’ Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2013 750ML ($179.95) $159 special, only 12 bottles available!
Antonio Galloni 97+ points
“The 2013 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is outrageously beautiful. I remember tasting it as vin clair in March, 2014. Today, as a finished Champagne from bottle, the 2013 captures all of the intense ripeness and bright acidity that make this vintage so exceptional. A wine of cut and brilliance, the 2013 will thrill readers who enjoy Blanc de Blancs.

New Wines from Cayuse!

Cayuse is one of the most in-demand wineries in North America, producing wines from both Rhone and Bordeaux varieties that are among the finest in the world and selling them almost exclusively through their mailing list.  Even if you wanted to buy their wines directly off that list, you’d be looking at a looooong wait before getting an opportunity—so this is a rare treat.

We’re always on the hunt for more of these hyper-rare bottlings—and this set of wines is a prime example of why they’re so exciting.

Burgundy’s Top Value?

The Wines of Domaine Collotte

“Collotte remains one of the most under the radar growers in Marsannay. At their best, these wines are striking for their purity of fruit and overall sense of harmony.” –Antonio Galloni

A vintage like 2018 isn’t just a great year in Burgundy—it’s a great buying opportunity if you know where to look. While the prices for the top wines from the best producers skyrocketed, the value producers’ prices barely budged.
