It’s no secret that we’ve long adored the wines from Christophe Baron. This Champenois-turned-Oregonian more or less put The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater on the map. His Walla Walla portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet, and red blends sourced from Oregon and Washington. Representing the pinnacle of the region’s reds, we’re never surprised when top notch scores are released, just pleased as punch that we continue to be able to offer you these mailing list-mostly gems.
 
Not satisfied with crafting some of the most famous and sought-after wines in Walla Walla for roughly twenty years, Christophe returned to the Marne Valley of Champagne to craft exquisitely mineral Champagnes from his family’s vines. We at the shop weren’t terribly surprised by this new project given penchant for Pinot Meunier-based Champagnes from other growers in the region. Nor were we surprised at the obscene quality when he excitedly shared a magnum of the inaugural release with us.
 
The soils in the Marne Valley where Christophe’s grapes grow are particularly suited for Pinot Meunier being comprised of calcareous clay over pure chalk. Meunier is famed for contributing earthy spice flavors to champagne blends and is gaining prominence as a single varietal, particularly amongst grower producers.

It pours a salmon/orange-tinged hue and opens in the glass to fresh, floral, pretty aromas of nectarine, salted orange, fresh rose petal, and curry spice. Medium-bodied, it has a wonderful chalky and pithy texture, with a pinpoint mousse that’s almost an afterthought. Ripe with fruit but well-balanced and long, with mouthwatering acidity, its spicier notes (cardamom, perhaps?) start to reveal themselves as it opens, and the wine lasts long on the palate. It is quite distinctive. Drink 2024-2040. 8 grams per liter dosage.”

Aubry is an interesting estate, in that stylistically (and from a zeitgeist perspective) they’re very much thought of as a “classical” producer (and are in their winemaking), but when you look at the wines they make, they appear very avant-garde. That’s largely due to a desire to work with what might be termed as “heirloom” varieties (Pinot Blanc, Arbanne, Petit Meslier) which goes back to time before that might have been seen as cool (and was instead thought of as crazy).
 
The bubbles produced from these grapes are the opposite of their basic wines—you recognize them instantly as Champagne, but as though through a mirror that subtly distorts what you expect. The wines are delicious and approachable but you leave with the impression that the world of Champagne has a few more layers than what you had previously assumed.

What makes Sancerre so special? Happenstance and terroir.
 
It’s a fluke of history that Sancerre became synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc. The town was best known for its light red wines made from Gamay and Pinot Noir. After phylloxera swept through the Loire Valley, it was Sauvignon Blanc that took most readily to grafting in the village. Soon wine lovers became enamored with the mineral-drenched and highly perfumed white.
 
The terroir has a palpable impact on the wines, giving these whites their bright acidity, gooseberry-laced perfume, and chalky and stony minerality. The soils here are mostly Kimmeridgian chalk, the same found in the surprisingly close-by region of Chablis. There are pockets, too, of silex (flint) soils. Though the village of Pouilly-Fumé is better known for these soils, the silex imparts a distinctive smoky gunflint aroma to some Sancerre wines, too.
 
Despite the ravages of phylloxera, Sancerre is still home to Pinot Noir reds and rosés. The wines are bone-dry and lean towards being medium to light in body with floral and berry notes.
 
These are lovely wines for your table that show remarkable flexibility with food. This is the preferred white at Parisian bistros, after all. So, lift a glass of sunshine and stock up for your springtime festivities while the sale is on!

The intensity and richness is combined with mineral structure, fine tannins and a sustainability coming from the soils. While many 2019 Sancerres were on the bigger side, this is taut and precise with no sense of any overripeness nor alcohol heaviness. It’s not Sauvignon Blanc-like either, speaking more of its place than variety, which seems to be the goal of every producer in Sancerre, which is rather disrespectful to the grape in my mind. Instead, there’s a crystalline character, a savoriness, crip apple and the merest hint of almond. Exemplary stuff.”

Boulay farms a 0.75 hectares plot of 30- to 60-year-old vins where the soils are pebbly, lime-rich and strewn with fossils. If you’re an American that drinks German Riesling, it’s because of Johannes Selbach. As the winemaker and owner of Selbach-Oster, Selbach makes profound and affordable German Rieslings. Because they aren’t showy or extreme and instead lean towards moderate levels of alcohol and residual sugar, the wines are overlooked by reviewers that prefer a more bombastic style. Sure, Selbach could make more opulent wines and score higher points—but he’s not one to cave to trends. As a result, the wines are useful at table. You can drink his delicate and soulful Spätlesen and Auslesen wines with your main course, not just dessert, and you’d be shocked at how flexible the bone-dry GGs and ethereal Kabinetts are.
 
But Johannes Selbach’s excellent style of Rieslings is not why he could be considered the ambassador of modern German wines. In fact, Johannes is the modest and humble tastemaker behind US importer Terry Theise, one of the most important American figures in the modern revitalization of interest in German Rieslings.
 
Selbach connected Theise to multiple estates as Theise built his portfolio, such as A.J. Adams and Vols. He even took over production at Merkelbach when the elderly brothers retired without heirs. Selbach-Oster was one of the first estates Theise imported, and, as evidenced in the legendary Terry Theise catalogues produced while he worked with Skurnik, Johannes Selbach was an essential advisor and a dear friend.
 
Chez Vinopolis, we have worked directly with Johannes Selbach for many years. The selections have varied with the vintage: we’ve picked up a pallet or two of Selbach-Oster wines, we’ve carried wines he personally tasted and selected at the Bernkasteler Ring auction (more a showcase of estate’s top wines than an American-style auction), and sometimes we’ve loaded up on underrepresented producers he admires such as Prinz, Karlsmuhle and Kees-Kieren.
 
The wide array of Selbach-Oster wines we have in stock were hand-picked for our shop by Johannes Selbach himself. These are his treasures, what he wants to share with you. We’re proud to offer them and excited to present them to you on our three-day sale.

John Gilman 92 points “The 2019 Schlossberg Kabinett from Selbach-Oster is really a very pretty example of the vintage, but this is more Spätlese in terms of weight and breadth of shoulder than classical Kabinett. However, this takes away nothing from the charm here on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering a lovely blend of white cherry, white peach, a touch of wild yeasts, a refined base of slate, bee pollen and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, complex and nicely filigreed, with good acids, fine focus and grip and a long, complex and very nicely balanced finish. Think of this as a hybrid between Kabinett and Spätlese, but with personality to burn! 2020-2040+.”

Terry Theise note “Schmitt is almost as steep at Rotlay, and also has a perfect southern exposure, but a deeper subsoil of crumbly, broken slate mixed with organic matter and loam. The vineyard is farther back from the Mosel and gets less of the river’s cooling effect. Instead the warmth radiated from the village houses and church beneath warm the vineyard (a privileged situation akin to that of Bernkasteler Doctor.)”

It proves quite reserved and restrained at first, and needs a couple of minutes in the glass to reveal some refined and perfumed scents of whipped almond cream, white flowers, orange blossom, candied grapefruit, and anise. The wine is beautifully creamy and dense on the palate, and leaves a focused and zesty feel in the well-delineated and remarkably persistent finish. It offers a superbly attractive and complex nose of grapefruit, yellow peach, honeyed pear, spices, flowers, and mint. The wine coats the palate with ample juicy and yellow honeyed fruits, almond cream, and a touch of nut paste and leaves one with a sense of herbal flavors reminiscent of great Doktor wines in the crystal clear and very long finish,. Chisa Bize took over the estate in 2013 when her husband, Patrick, passed away suddenly. She’s long been the guiding force behind the domaine, pushing it towards organics and biodynamics after having studied under Anne-Claude Leflaive.
 
There’s a wide range of premier cru bottlings all using vines planted decades ago. Even the entry-level bottlings incorporate old vines, likely the reason for their unmatched complexity and heft. Vinification of the reds are 100% whole cluster with minimal use of new oak, though both the reds and whites are aged in barrel.
 
These are hearty, bold wines with muscle not always expected in the oft overlooked appellation of Savigny-les-Beaune. We love the quality on show here: few wines breach the $100 price point and offer more value than most triple digit Burgundies.

John Gilman 93+ points “The 2018 les Vergelesses is probably the ripest red wine chez Bize this year, coming in at 13.8 percent, but in the context of the vintage, this is still pretty low octane juice! The bouquet is deep, pure and very classy, wafting from the glass in a mix of dark berries, black cherries, gamebird, woodsmoke, gentle spice tones, just a whisper of fruitcake and a very complex base of soil. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a sappy core, fine mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and outstanding length and grip on the complex and very refined finish. This is the most elegant premier cru terroir in the domaine’s lineup, but often that elegance takes a full decade or more to start to really make its presence felt; this year it is there right from the outset! 2028-2060.”

The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, nicely focused and more elegant than the Les Grands Liards. Fine precision on the saline finish. This represents another excellent 2019 from Bize.”
