Tempier and Bandol: Iconic Wines / Iconic Producer 3-9-24

On Sale Now!

“Of all of the domaines we represent, no other serves more as our cornerstone, stands more in the defense of terroir, and is more intricately interwoven with our own history, than that of the iconic Peyraud family of Domaine Tempier…. the wines of Domaine Tempier stand as the proud benchmark when talking about Provençal wines. Through their passion, pioneering, and advocacy for Bandol, the Peyrauds have become legendary. We are fortunate to have their wines serve as the flagship of our portfolio, and even more grateful to have the Peyrauds and their extended family as cherished friends. If any wine can be said to have soul, it’s Tempier.” – Kermit Lynch (Importer)

Domaine Tempier is Bandol. It is the most famous producer in the region, best known for its mineral-driven and cellar-friendly rosé. The reds, though, are criminally underrated and underappreciated, especially to lovers of bold, full-throttle wines. They represent the pinnacle of Mourvèdre-based blends that could convince even the most die-hard Rhone lovers to expand their horizons, if only one could manage to convince them to try. That might be the hardest part, but we’ve greased the wheel, so to speak, by placing these reds and all of our in-stock Bandol wines on our three-day sale, starting now.

If you aren’t familiar with the Tempier reds (or Bandol in general) know that these are big and rich with a distinct earthiness and a spicy, bright finish. Historically, they were quite tannic as well, but Tempier has made current releases drinkable on release (we just suggest a healthy decant). Oh, and in case you’re wondering, they age remarkably. Mourvèdre effortlessly transcends its decades much like Nebbiolo. So, pick up a few and prepare to have your mind blow now and for decades to come.

Tempier Wines In Stock and On Sale Now:

Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“Primarily Clairette (60%) and Ugni Blanc (30%), with bits of Bourboulenc, Marsanne and Rolle, the 2021 Bandol Blanc was still in tank when I visited early last year. It presents a striking juxtaposition of ripe pears and honeyed richness with brighter notes of fresh lime juice on the nose and medium-bodied palate, finishing with a sense of plush richness balanced by mouthwatering citrus zest and brine.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Migoua 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $81.80, that’s $77.71 at 5% off and $73.62 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2020 Bandol la Migoua—tasted from foudre—is a bit tarry and rubbery (expected, to some degree, in young Mourvèdre-based wines) but opens up to reveal seductive, ripe notes of blackberries and mulberries. A blend of approximately 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Cinsault, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah, it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, concentrated but silky in feel and elegant on the long finish.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Tourtine 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 34 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“Mainly Mourvèdre (85%), with Cinsault and Grenache, the 2020 Bandol la Tourtine was still in foudre at the time of my visit last year. Scents of cola, smoke and red berries provide ample complexity on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and almost creamy in texture while remaining fresh and dynamic on the lengthy finish.”

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge Cuvee Classique “Pour Lulu” 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 91-93 points
“Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Bandol Cuvee Classique had been blended the week before my visit. Already showing classic notes of tree bark and truffle layered against cherries and raspberries and a touch of olive, it looks relatively precocious. In the mouth, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, plush finish.”

We’ve included all wines from Bandol on our sale, including some of the finest rosés and reds available:

Domaines Ott Chateau Romassan Bandol Rosé 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine & Spirits 96 points
“Chateau Romassan sits at the foot of the hilltop village Le Castellet, a few miles north of the Bay of Bandol. The Otts rely on mourvedre for the bulk of their rose, this one includes 30 percent cinsault and 15 percent grenache), and, thought 2021 was another hot summer here, Romassan’s poor limestone and sandstone soils produced a deeply savory wine. This pale Bandol seems to have inhaled the local scrubland and seaside breezes, presenting that savory edge alongside husk cherry, grapefruit and pale melon flavors. Firm and versatile, it would pair nicely with anything from bouillabaisse to a Nicoise salad; or take it abroad alongside chicken yakitori.”

“[Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Bandol Rosé] cuvée is assembled by Peter Weygandt, of Weygandt-Metzler, at the domaine with the talented help of Stéphane Bourret, the winemaker, and the Bronzo family. This is delicious and very rewarding dry pink wine and, selling at almost half the price of Tempier’s Bandol Rosé, it is a real bargain!” –Kerry Winslow, Grapelive

Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Bandol Rosé 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
78% Mourvedre, 18% Grenache, 4% Cinsault. Limestone soil, hand-harvested. Certified Organic. Bottled exclusively for Weygandt-Metzler Importing & the American market. The 2022 is fresh, typical Bandol with more spices this year than in previous years. A lot of character, less dark – classic. Lower yields than last 2 vintages, so more substance but great acidity. Partial malo and maceration of the Cinsault and Mourvèdre.

Few producers capture our hearts like Chateau Pradeaux. The estate works their old-vine vineyard entirely with organic practices and graze sheep instead of employing herbicide. Serving a harvest basket full of southern French fruit and herbs that’s all underscored by a chalky minerality, these are complex and crowd-pleasing wines.

Chateau Pradeaux Bandol Rosé 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $36.50, that’s $34.68 at 5% off and $32.85 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 91-93 points
“Not bottled yet at the time of my spring visit to the region, the 2021 Bandol Rose nevertheless showed exceptional promise in my blind tasting. A blend of 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Cinsault, it’s a coppery flamingo-pink in color, with more extraction and tannin than your typical Bandol rosé. It’s round and ripe on the palate, medium to full-bodied, with cherry and lime notes and a long, softly dusty finish. The 2020 version, tried at the estate, is still going strong and might be even a little bit better. Don’t skip it just because it’s not called out on this list.”
Rosenthal Wine Merchant importer note “The Bandol Rosé from Pradeaux is perhaps the most serious wine in this category. Robust, rich, and complex with an ability to age gracefully, Etienne Portalis insists that the Domaine’s rosé is a gastronomic experience, not just an easy-drinking wine. We could not agree more, and tastings at Château Pradeaux have repeatedly demonstrated the graceful, profound future this wine encounters if not swallowed in its infancy.”

Chateau Pradeaux Bandol Rouge 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Rosenthal Wine importer note
“The Bandol from Pradeaux is a creature whose soul emerges from Mourvèdre. The classic cuvée is 95% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache, with the Grenache adding spice to the bouquet and leavening some of the drama provided by the intimidating structure of the Mourvèdre. One of the hallmarks of Pradeaux is that the grapes are never destemmed. The result is a wine of ferocious tannin in its youth, another reason for the prolonged aging in these large wooden barrels, a time for the wine to repose and find its identity as it emerges from the cocoon of tannins to reveal an exceptionally complex crowd of aromas and flavors. Although situated mere steps from the Mediterranean, harvest at Pradeaux (always manual) frequently starts in earnest for the Mourvedre during the first weeks of October. The average age of the vines is approximately 35 years and harvest levels are quite low, often in the range of 25 hectoliters per hectare. Fermentation occurs at temperatures between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius and the wines are racked into large oak ovals and foudres where they rest with occasional rackings for four years before being bottled. Neither new oak nor small barrels are ever used at Pradeaux and the red wines are never fined nor filtered.”

Screaming Eagle
The Eagle is landing (soon)! The original Napa cult winery, Screaming Eagle’s quality was already a poorly kept secret among oenophiles before a perfect 100 point review by Robert Parker launched its reputation into the stratosphere.

Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA 2021 750ml $2,699 special, 2 bottles available
Vinous 98-100 Points “The 2021 The Flight is magnificent. The aromatics alone are utterly beguiling. Crushed flowers, mint and red/purplish berry fruit make a strong opening statement. Medium in body and supremely gracious, the Flight possesses silky tannins that wrap it all together in style, with bright acids that punctuate the finish. Readers will find a wine of supreme elegance and class. This is a phenomenal showing. I loved it.”

Sine Qua Non

Sourcing fruit from a wide variety of growers from year to year, and increasingly from their own vineyards has caused the winery to never make exactly the same wine twice, of which winemaker  Manfred Krankl has said, “People buy Sine Qua Non. They don’t seem to give a toot where it’s from.” Krankl is unique among European winemakers turned American winery owners as he did not start in the wine industry until after relocating to America. A man of assuredness and many talents, Manfred is famous for not only his wines but the original artwork that adorns each new bottling he produces.

Sine Qua Non Distenta “III” Grenache, California, USA 2021 750ml $289 special, 1 bottle available
Vinous 96-99 Points “The 2021 Grenache Distenta III is one of the most refined wines I have tasted from Sine Qua Non. Floral aromatics make a strong first impression. There’s plenty of SQN richness, but also less overt opulence than most vintages. I tasted this from a tank sample just prior to bottling. The 2021 is simply magnificent. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle.”
Wine Advocate 96-98 Points “Because my visit was scheduled for July 6, just two weeks after bottling on June 22, I tasted the 2021 Grenache Distenta III as a precise blend from barrel. It comes mostly from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard (71%) and The Third Twin (23%) with the balance from the Cumulus Vineyard. It is a blend of 79% Grenache, 8.4% Syrah, 7.4% Mourvèdre, 3.2% Petite Sirah, 1.6% Petit Manseng and 0.4% Muscat. The Distenta III was vinified using about 35% whole Grenache clusters, and it matured in 42% new French oak of various sizes for around 23 months. It has a medium to deep ruby color and is incredibly fragrant at this stage. Wild berry jam aromas are accented by tones of wildflower, tar, tangerine and coffee beans. The full-bodied palate is concentrated yet lively, bursting with crunchy, floral fruit and surprisingly energetic acidity. It has detailed, grainy tannins and a long, lifted finish that wears its alcohol well”

Sine Qua Non Distenta “III” White, California, USA 2021 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles available
Not yet reviewed, previous review provided for reference
Erin Brooks- Wine Advocate 98 Points (2020 vintage) “Drinking the White Distenta II is an omakase-like experience, an unexpected journey that begins with naturally bitter phenolics, blossoms into soaring perfume and finishes with dessert-like honeyed tones. On day one, the wine is overt and bold, while day two reveals a fresher, livelier white with finer detail, as if the wine is coming into focus. In the mouth, it’s expansive and luxuriously satiny. Despite its powerful style and unabashed ripeness, it carries its 15.8% alcohol expertly and maintains a focused streak of tangy acidity. The finish is especially unique, offering touches of butterscotch that complement its perfumed fruit—a rare combination of aromatic grape varieties and classy new wood that works surprisingly well! If you’re a fan of aromatic, textural whites, purchase as many bottles as you can so that you can follow what’s sure to be unique savory development in bottle over the next 10 to 15+ years.”

Sine Qua Non Eleven Confessions Vineyard Grenache, Sta. Rita Hills, USA 2020 750ml $399 special, 3 bottles available
Not yet reviewed, previous review provided for reference
Erin Brooks Wine Advocate 97 Points (2019 vintage) “Deep ruby-purple in color, it takes significant time to open and is mostly coiled and shy on day one. On day two, its aromas unfurl: cherry pie and wild berry jam scents are layered with tones of cured meat, peppercorn, bergamot and wildflowers. The full-bodied palate is seamless and ultra powdery in texture, with balancing bursts of juicy acidity that highlight pretty spice and floral tones that fan across the long finish. It deserves generous cellar time and will be long lived. 922 cases and 240 magnums were made.

Sine Qua Non Eleven Confessions Vineyard Syrah, Sta Rita Hills, USA  2020 750ml $399 special, 1 bottle available
Not yet reviewed, previous review provided for reference
Erin Brooks Wine Advocate 99 Points (2019 vintage) “This gorgeous Syrah opens over several days and never seems to diminish. It offers pure aromas of crème de cassis, tar, salami and ringing tones of violet. The full-bodied palate is incredibly velvety in texture, and despite its concentration and powerful style, it manages noticeable freshness and detail, with that magical violet perfume echoing across the long finish. This will develop gracefully in the cellar over the next two decades or more.”

New and Familiar Domestic Wines!

“You don’t have to ask me twice when it comes to trying wine made from French grapes grown here in the US. I love comparing the similarities and differences of a wine made from ‘Old World’ grapes, with a ‘New World’ style, terroir, soil type, and of course, vineyard site. There is something both familiar and exciting about trying a wine made from the grapes you know and love, but with an entirely different expression.” -Hannah

Cameron Winery ‘Giovanni’ Pinot Blanc, Dundee Hill, USA 2023 750ml $18 special, 17 bottles available
I had the opportunity to try this wine recently with the winemaker of Cameron, and I was both impressed and inspired. Not only is John Paul mesmerizing, so are his wines. This wine is made from Pinot Blanc, and is everything I mentioned earlier about falling in love with a new style of wine made from a favorite grape. Upon trying, I got the typical notes that one would get when trying a pinot blanc; think stone and citrus fruit (pear, grapefruit, lemon) with some added creaminess. The mouthfeel is what I gravitated to most, the richness and texture that one gets from a Pinot Blanc was present, with an added sharp and high-toned quality.

Ovum Rare Form ‘Day Moon’ Sparkling, Dundee Hills, USA NV 750ml $49 special, 17 bottles available
And last but not least, I of course have to highlight a sparkling wine made right here in Portland, OR. This sparkling wine is reminiscent of a classic Blanc de Blanc Champagne, with a flair of a New World style of by using the grape Riesling. On the nose and palate, expressive notes of lemon, brioche, and florals show. The bubbles are bright and fine and achieve that mousse like quality. The acidity is zippy and is well balanced by a long finish and toast. For anyone looking to try a sparkling wine from the Willamette Valley, this is the one to try.
Bedrock Wine Co.

Bedrock calls itself a “mission-driven” winery dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of old vineyards all around California. These vineyards, they say are “living pieces of history.” From their humble beginnings in 2007 making wine in an old chicken coop to the world of high scores in major wine publications, owners Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell have remained focused on coaxing high-quality terroir driven wines from their eclectic vineyards.

Bedrock Wine Co. Alta Vista Vineyard Gewurztraminer, Moon Mountain District, USA 2019 750ml $29 special, 8 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 Points “The 2019 Gewürztraminer Alta Vista Vineyard Old Vine is another compelling wine in this range. Readers will find a dry Gewürztraminer that emphasizes a whole range of savory and floral notes. Even so, the 2019 exudes richness and the layers open with time in the glass, bringing out the wine’s creaminess.”

Bedrock Wine Co. Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Red, Contra Costa County, USA 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 16 bottles available
Cs-6 Bedrock Evangelho Heritage Red, Contra Costa County 2021 750ml $249 special, 4 cases available
Cs-12 Bedrock Evangelho Heritage Red, Contra Costa County 2021 750ml $479 special, 2 cases available
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points “From Zinfandel grown in the pure sand soils of this incredible site, the 2021 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage is lifted and pure with raspberry liqueur, fresh flowers, and brushy earth. Medium-bodied, with a highly refined structure, it reveals a floral perfume of herbes de Provence and rose petals that lasts long after the wine has dissipated. With fine tannins and a gorgeous, sandy mineral texture, it’s a beautiful wine to drink over the next 10 or more years.”
Vinous 94 Points “The 2021 Evangelho Heritage Wine is dark, sensual and wonderfully expressive. Blue fruit, spice, lavender and leather all meld together in this beautifully layered Zinfandel-based field blend. The 2021 possesses unreal complexity and depth, with much of its intensity coming from punishingly low yields. The 2021 is simply fabulous.”

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘The Bedrock Heritage’, Sonoma Valley, USA 2021 750ml $51.90 special, 8 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points “A deep but transparent red, the 2021 The Bedrock Heritage is about 50% Zinfandel and offers aromas of fresh pencil shavings, black cherry, roasted herbs, and fresh flowers. Full-bodied, it has fine sweet tannins and note of ripe berries, mocha, and turned soil. Drink over the next 10 years.”

Bedrock Wine Co. Monte Rosso Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley, USA 2021 750ml $69 special, 7 bottles available
Vinous 95 Points “The 2021 Zinfandel Monte Rosso, a blend from two blocks, is an elegant, understated wine that shows the more floral, savory side of this historic site. A wine more of nuance than power, the Monte Rosso Zinfandel is all pedigree. Sweet red-toned fruit, chalk, dried herbs, mint and blood orange add to a feeling of brightness. This is very nicely done, and yet I feel like there is more to this wine than it is showing today.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “Pouring a richer purple with a ruby tinge, the 2021 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard has classic benchmark aromas of raspberry liqueur, fresh peach, and five spice. This medium to full-bodied red is fully dry, with more serious structure and ripe tannins, and what feels like more mountain fruit character, but it retains freshness throughout. Drink 2025-2040.”

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘Pato Vineyard Heritage’, Contra Costa County, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 11 bottles available
Skurnik Wines “From the southern edge of Oakley planted on sand, Pato Heritage wine is a lovely reflection of the vintage in this increasingly suburbanized area. Here, the sandy soils buffs away the variety’s rougher edges and makes for a deeply colored but elegant element of the wine filled with dark fruit and black pepper. This is combined with the vibrant fruit from Zinfandel to make a wine that is rich but svelte.”

Lingua Franca

Founded by Master Sommelier Larry Stone (only the 8th person in history to achieve the prestigious rank in the organization’s history) to explore the unique charms of Eola-Amity and its ancient patchwork of marine sediments, volcanic basalts, and wind-blown Loess soils. There is a real sense in these bottles of the conversation between the fruit and the earth and the way their relationship changes over time, vintage by vintage. Featuring dry-farmed, biodynamic viticulture and minimalist winemaking, these are an elegant, but pure representation of the region’s terroir.

Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $31.90 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 91 Points “The 2021 Chardonnay AVNI is a total pleasure on the nose. Perfumed, it blends crushed stone mineral tones with crisp green apples and suggestions of fresh mint. This flows across the palate with silky textures and medium-bodied weight traversing both savory and sweet, with a saline tinge developing toward the close. It finishes with a lingering sour lime twang, potent with a cheek-puckering sensation.”

Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $31.90 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Pinot Noir AVNI is distinctly savory and earthy, blending flowery underbrush and dusty sage with dried black cherries and a lifting hint of mint. This is racy and sleek, with vividly ripe red and blue fruits energized by vibrant acidity. Tactile mineral tones and rosy inner florals emerge as the 2021 finishes incredibly long with youthful tension, and a tart wild berry tinge lingers on and on. 20% whole clusters and 25% new French oak.

Bow & Arrow

True, the Willamette Valley is best known today for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the region is full of so many unique terroirs and micro-climates that it’s possible to cultivate almost any grape if you know where to plant.

“Instead of Burgundy,” Bow & Arrow’s founder and winemaker Scott Frank says, “we pay homage to the refreshing and decidedly working class wines of France’s Loire Valley.” A New York transplant with many years in the wine industry, Scott finally bit the bullet in 2010 and began making wine, purchasing grapes from cool climate sites and giving his wines irreverent, but apropos names and labels.

Loire Cabernet Franc fans rejoice! This wine has all the lithe acid and mineral notes of your favorite Saumurs and Chinons.
Bow & Arrow Cabernet Franc, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml
$29 special, 17 bottles available
Winery Note “Sourced entirely from the Biodynamic Johan Vineyard this debut varietal bottle of Cab Franc was made according to the detailed notes I took at my favorite Chinon cellars a decade ago. Aged 14 months in old puncheon and seven months in barrel. Only 45 cases produced.”

Representing a little known Loire region celebrated by in-the-know wine geeks and somms, this a fresh take on white blends at a great price.
Bow & Arrow ‘Fool’s Gold’, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $24 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Note “50% Chardonnay/50% Sauvignon Blanc. After experimenting in 2019 with making a Cheverny Blanc style Chard/Sauv Blanc blend and having it exceed all expectations I am happy (relieved?!) to announce I went all in and made much more in 2020…”

Chewy and delicious! This is more or less a skin contact wine that fans of orange wines and chillable reds will dig.
Bow & Arrow Pinot Gris, Arbre Vert Vineyard, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml
$24 special, 5 bottles available
Winery Note ” From organically farmed Arbre Vert Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.  100% Pinot Gris with long maceration and elevage.  Aged in 600l puncheon and an old barrique.  Inspired by the “orange wines” of my early years in the biz which were mostly Italian and always rustic and chewy.  Also the only wine I’ve ever made not inspired by the Loire region!  Only 94 cases produced”

Just a few bottles yet! Drink for the weather you want, not the weather you have.
Bow & Arrow Rose, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml
$19.50 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “This year’s rosé is a short maceration of Gamay from the organically farmed Hughes Hollow vineyard. Natural as can be! It’s a stainless steel fermented study on wet rocks and perhaps a border skirmish between watemelon Jolly Ranchers and Grapefruit Jarritos.  Unyeasted, unfiltered, unfined and unmanipulated. Only made in years that lend themselves to making quality rose.  Our smallest production.  Gentle talk for “Limited!””

Dominio de Pingus ‘Pingus’, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $1,049 special, 3 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 99 Points “I tasted the bottled 2019 Pingus two weeks after bottling. Even at this early stage and after the operation, the wine is super harmonious and elegant. They really outdid themselves here and produced an amazingly fresh, aromatic and harmonious wine in a warm vintage. It’s incredibly textured, with refined, very fine-grained and chalky tannins. It’s very balanced, and there’s no excess of anything; it has 14% alcohol, perfect ripeness and a velvety mouthfeel. It gets more floral with time in the glass, getting nuanced and really interesting. It delivers what the barrel sample promised one year ago, when the wine already surprised me. I think the word that best describes this wine is precision—it’s clean, focused, balanced and delineated. Bravo! 7,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021.”

Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points “This deep, inky hued beauty offers up a beautiful, full-bodied, richly textured, and incredibly concentrated style that carries ample black and blue fruit as well as notes of crushed stone, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil. It has the focused, structured style of the 2018 vintage and is going to benefit from 4-6 years (if not a decade) of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.”

AJ Adam: Gold in the Middle Mosel 3-7-24

On Sale Now!

In a virtually unknown side valley of the Middle Mosel, just south of Piesport, are the steep, south-facing vineyard slopes of Dhron. Few of the younger generation have taken over for the aging winemakers of this small region, leading the region to fall into obscurity during the 1980s and 90s.

One of the rare exceptions of younger winemakers is Andreas Adam. Though his family’s holdings had dwindled to one hectare and his parents had chosen not to make wine themselves, Adam restarted his family’s estate. He released his first wine from the 2000 vintage at 19 years-old after honing his craft at Heymann-Loewenstein. Not long after, he was discovered by Terry Theise, who imported his wines to the US, bringing international attention. His sister, Barbara, joined him in 2013 after having worked for Franz Keller in Baden and Klaus-Peter Keller in the Rheinhessen.

Their holdings have expanded to five hectares, including from three Grand Cru vineyards: Hofberg and Has’chen in Dhron and Goldröpfchen in Piesport. In Dhron, the terroir of the area produces wines more similar to Saar than Mosel: the steepness, high altitude and cooling mountain breezes help the wines retain vibrant acidity, and the age of his parcels adds to the concentration and finesse. Older vines are a rarity in Dhron since much of the land was reformed, re-terraced, and replanted in the 1970s. In Hofberg, Adam has vines dating back to the 1950s, while in Has’chen, their vines are ungrafted and were planted in 1930.

In the winery, Adam hand sorts the grapes before they undergo natural yeast fermentation in stainless steel, fuder and halbfuder casks. He adds nothing to the fermenting wines.  The result is wines of poise, energy and concentration: terroir-driven and supremely balanced. The wines are a reminder of the glory these once-prized vineyards held in decades past.

“The 2022er Riesling, as it is referred to on the front label, is a dry wine made from 5 to 25-year-old vines situated in the upper part of the main hill of the Dhroner Hofberg and was fermented and matured mainly stainless-steel tanks as well as Fuder. This wine offers a great nose of bitter lemon, white flowers, and chalk. It is beautifully balanced and subtly zesty on the palate and leaves a gorgeously mouthwatering feel in the long finish. What a stunning success for a “mere” Estate! 2024-2032.”

“The 2022er Dhroner, as it is referred to on the front label, is a Fuder-fermented wine made from fruit harvested on 45-year-old vines in the middle part (slightly less steep) part of the main hill. The wine offers a beautiful nose of ripe lemon, grapefruit, white flowers, whipped cream, and smoke. It is beautifully playful on the palate with well-integrated acidity and spicy elements. Ripe and lemony fruits make for a beautifully elegant and not overly racy feel in the finish. This is a beautiful dry wine in the making with quite some upside as the flavors develop more precision. 2024-2032.”

“Has’chen is blue; cool, elegant, and precise. Hofberg is red; warmer, more exotic, and textured than Has’chen. Piesport is violet; wilder still and with a distinctive saltiness.” -Skurnik Wines

Weingut A.J. Adam Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Mosel 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $85, that’s $80.75 at 5% off and $76.50 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 95+ points
“The 2022er Goldtröpfchen, as it is referred on the consumer label (the reference to GG is provided in small print on the side of the label), was fermented in Fuder with fruit picked on partially un-grafted vines planted in 1909 and partially vines planted in the 1940s, both in the sector situated above the village of Ferres. This bright-yellow-colored wine offers a beautiful nose of bitter lemon, cassis, elderflower, chalk, and smoke. The wine is superbly fresh, deep, and intense on the palate, where the fruit is perfectly balanced by stunning elements of tart and ripe but firm zest. The finish is gorgeous and incredible intense, precise, and persistent. We would not be surprised if it eventually would warrant an even higher rating as everything is in balance and the precision and intensity are remarkable. 2027-2042”
Skurnik Wines Importer note “Goldtröpfchen lies like a huge amphitheater in the outer loop of the Mosel, which flows around here Piesport. In its orientation, it stretches from southeast to south to southwest. The sunshine duration in the vineyards is long, east and west slope protect the opposite side from wind. With a slope of 30 to 70 percent, their vineyards are sometimes extremely steep. The easily warmed soil is comprised of deep, very weathered, dark Devon slate that contains quartz and minerals. In some places there is a high share of fine earth. The site generally has good available water capacity. The name “Goldtröpfchen” means “gold droplet” and varies theories about its origin exist. It could possible come from the Celtic word for hill or mountain, “col”. Another hypothesis points to the glittery soil or golden drops of liquid that form on the ripe or botrytized grapes as a name source. Then again, even the value of the wine can be compared to gold.”

“The 2022er Häs’chen, as it is referred to on the consumer label (the reference to GG is provided in small print on the side of the label), is a dry wine fermented in oak cask with fruit picked on un-grafted vines planted in 1933. It offers a superb even if still slightly yeasty and backward nose which only gradually reveals its stunning scents grapefruit, elderflower, a hint of cassis, floral elements, whipped cream, and smoke. The wine develops a beautifully subtle feel on the palate where fresh fruit and fine spices make for a hugely enjoyable experience. The finish is incredibly alluring as it is not overly intense but oh-so subtle and refined. 2027-2037.”

“The 2021er Hofberg, as it is referred on the consumer label (the reference to GG is provided in small print on the side of the label), was fermented in Fuder with fruit picked on up 55 to 60-year-old vines situated in classical parts on the main hill of the vineyard. It captures one’s attention with a bright, aromatic, and complex nose of white peach, greengage, grapefruit, lemon, fine spices, almond cream, and herbs. The wine is superbly structured on the palate, where some fine fruity elements join the party and add some Schmelz to the otherwise stony and herbal core. The finish is very long, pure, and fully dry with some salty notes coming through in the after-taste. 2024-2036”

It offers a superb nose made of citrusy fruit, mirabelle, whipped cream, laurel, carraway, and herbs. The wine proves subtle and playful on the palate and leaves a gorgeously long and spicy feel in the finish. The aftertaste is subtle, playful, and delicate. 2027-2037.”

“The 2022er Hofberg Spätlese, as it is referred to on the front label, was made from fruit harvested at 86° Oechsle in the backside of the main hill and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (67 g/l). It offers a beautiful nose made of whipped cream, citrusy elements, melon, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves nicely smooth and creamy on the palate and leaves a gorgeously playful feel with perfectly integrated acidity in the long finish. A touch of sweetness still needs to integrate in the aftertaste, something which will have happened in a decade or so. 2032-2047.”

Mosel Fine Wines 92 points
“The 2016er Auslese * was made from the second pressing of the Eiswein grapes harvested on November 30. This already golden-colored wine delivers a rather ripe and exotic nose of grapefruit, candied passion fruit and backed pineapple. It is nicely balanced on the palate and does not exhibit the usual “Eiswein bite” of such wines but proves more luscious in style. The acidity comes eventually through in the sweet and complex finish. 2023-2036.”
David Schildknecht-Vinous 91 points “This “one-star” Auslese represents the later fraction of pressing from the frozen grapes harvested on November 30. Papaya, peach and candied lemon peel on the nose set the tone for a silken-textured, tartly tingling palate. An influx of salinity provides welcome saliva-inducement in a rich yet bright, albeit relatively opaque finish. The sense of invigoration and grip here are highly impressive.”

Chateau de Rouanne: On Sale Now! 3-6-24

Louis Barruol of Château de Saint Cosme’s Project in Vinsobres

Château de Saint Cosme is an iconic producer in Gigondas. Its vineyard sites can be traced back to Roman times, and its current ownership, the Barruol family, traces their holding on the lands over five centuries.

Louis Barruol, the 14th generation of winemakers for this historical estate, is not one to rest on his laurels. He’s had a hand in several projects both Old World and New. One such estate is Chateau de Rouanne.

Barruol has sourced fruit from this ancient estate for many years. It is a phenomenal site that also dates to Roman times. The vineyards were replanted in the 1960s and have been maintained with massale selection of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The soils are rich in limestone and sandy marl. In early 2019, he purchased the estate and began overseeing wine production.

One of his notable accomplishments with the estate was to produce single-parcel bottlings. Look for beauty and elegance in the Guerin, bold power in Les Cotes, and richness and intensity in the Rouanne et les Crottes.

The village-level bottling is no sleeper, either. It reminds us of Saint Cosme’s own Gigondas with a more rustic aromatic profile reminiscent of garrigue in Provençal wine. It’s absolutely gorgeous and an incredible value for only $24, made even better on our three-day sale.

“[Chateau de Rouanne] reminds me a lot of Saint Cosme when I took it over in 1992. It’s an unknown sleeping beauty waiting for a vigneron to truly love it.” — Louis Barruol

“Delivers a nice saturated feel without being heavy, letting cherry and plum paste notes unfurl slowly, along with violet, licorice root and warm humus accents, which all blossom steadily through the savory finish.”
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points “Looking at the reds, the 2019 Vinsobres is unquestionably outstanding and has lots of Syrah character in its dark, meaty fruits, peppery herb, violet, and chalky mineral-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, nicely textured, and balanced, it has plenty of structure and will keep for 8-10 years.”

“The Grenache-dominated single vineyard 2019 Vinsobres Lieu-Dit Guerin is brilliant as well. Concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and opulent, it has lots of red and black fruits, plenty of peppery herbs and meaty nuances, terrific balance, and outstanding length. It’s another gorgeous wine from this talented winemaker, and this is an estate to watch.”

“Winey and muscular, with cassis and bitter plum reduction notes leading the way, while baker’s chocolate, tobacco and warm humus fill in behind. Grippy and dark on the finish, with an old-school edge lingering. Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. Best from 2023 through 2030. 350 cases made, 200 cases imported. — JM”

Wine Spectator 93 points
“Rich and well-built, this offers up a serious dark core of black currant and plum reduction flavors supported by graphite, humus and cast iron notes, with sweet bay leaf, violet and tobacco notes filling in the background. A wine with a smoldering intensity. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2032. 350 cases made, 200 cases imported. — JM”
Jeb Dunnuck 91+ points “Lastly, the 2019 Rouanne Et Les Crottes is the same 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, not destemmed, and brought up in demi-muids. It’s more straight, structured, and tannic, with lots of black fruits and chalky minerality. Fresh, focused, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will have 10-15 years of overall longevity.”

BOND Estates: Napa Valley’s Finest 3-5-24

On Sale Now!

Imagine you’re a world-class winemaker crafting bottles that sell for thousands on the secondary market. Now imagine deciding to sell wines from a specific vineyard only after you’ve made at least ten vintages of wines from said vineyard to test. Now imagine that only 5% of vineyards you test make the cut. After a decade. That’s ridiculous, right? That’s Bill Harlan’s BOND.

Described by Antonio Galloni as a “once in a generation, modern day classic,” these are prestigious wines from Napa Valley. Launched in the 1990s, the San Francisco Chronicle describes the concept as completely at odds with what was popular at the time: style (one could snidely argue “over substance,” but really the article says over terroir):

“Bond instead emphasized a sense of place as its organizing principle, asserting that minute differences in a vineyard’s climate, soil and exposure — rather than the winemaking techniques — were the true variables. For its particular upscale audience, and for that moment in time, Bond deserves credit for having legitimized certain ideas of California terroir.” – Esther Mobley, SF Chronicle

And the resulting wines? A “viscerally thrilling” experience of five single-vineyard wines from unique micro-climates in Napa Valley. These astonishing beauties can be yours at our lowest markdowns ever on these wines!

BOND Estates Melbury, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $649, that’s $616.55 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The more time passes, the more I think Melbury may turn out to be one of the most complete wines in the BOND range. The 2016 and 2015 both make a very strong case for that view. Tasted from bottle, the 2015 is exceptionally beautiful and vivid. Blood orange, mint and floral notes add nuance to an unbelievably polished, refined Cabernet Sauvignon. Put simply, the 2015 Melbury is a total stunner and every bit as captivating as it was last year.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97 points “Bottled in early 2018, the 2015 Melbury is deep garnet-purple colored with beautiful redcurrant jelly and crème de cassis notes with savory notions of tobacco, black olives and smoked meats plus a waft of lavender. The palate is full-bodied, firm and grainy, with a lively line lifting the perfumed, savory layers, finishing long.”
Decanter 96 points “Bond is Bill Harlan’s ‘Burgundian’ approach to a handful of Napa Valley Cabernet vineyards he considers ‘Grand Crus’. The Harlan viticultural and winemaking teams are in complete control of the vineyards and make the wines. Melbury (named after a London neighborhood where the owners reside) is a tiny rocky mountain vineyard east of Rutherford. The 2016 has the intoxicating wild berry and mountain ‘chaparral’ aromas reminiscent of the dry California forests that ring the valley. Very structured, with discernible tannins, the wine nonetheless exudes freshness.”

BOND Estates Melbury, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $819, that’s $778.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The 2018 Melbury is, as always, the first of the single-vineyard wines presented at Bond. The order is always the same: Melbury-Quella-St. Eden-Vecina and Pluribus. I suppose that makes sense from the standpoint of concentration and structure, but it is quite penalizing for the Melbury, a wine that is more about elegance than power or tannins. That said, the 2018 is not a shy wine, it certainly has plenty of depth. Freshness, energy and verve are the signatures in a Cabernet that is all about intangibles. Hints of dark red cherry, tobacco, rose petal, mint and sweet spice emerge over time. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 96-98 points “A barrel sample, the 2018 Melbury sports a deep garnet-purple and sashays out of the glass with bold, gregarious scents of fresh black cherries, mulberries and plums with hints of black currants, cinnamon toast and Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and refreshing, it is chock-full of crunchy fruit with compelling mineral accents coming through on the long finish.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Packed with dark blackberry and black currant preserves, this has nicely coiled energy, with sassafras and apple wood accents mixed with flashes of sweet bay leaf and tobacco. Subtle sanguine and black tea hints curl around the finish. Best from 2023 through 2037.—J.M.”

BOND Estates Pluribus, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $819, that’s $778.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“The 2018 Pluribus captures all of the savory, mineral intensity of this site on Spring Mountain. Searing tannins, once such a challenge here, are much more finessed than in the past. Crushed rocks, mint, blood orange, gravel, exotic spice and rose petal lend tremendous complexity as the Pluribus shows off its considerable allure. This taut, mountain Cabernet Sauvignon has so much to offer. Today, it is wonderfully complete and thrilling. Even so, the best is yet to come.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97-100 points “From a vineyard located on Spring Mountain, the 2018 Pluribus (a barrel sample) reveals a deep garnet-purple. Youthfully reticent, it needs a fair bit of coaxing to reveal gorgeous notions of wild blueberries, ripe black plums and warm cassis plus hints of tilled earth, truffles, menthol and tobacco leaf. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with tightly wound black and blue fruit layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing very long with loads of earthy/savory sparks.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “This is well-packed, with crushed plum, steeped black currant and warmed blackberry compote notes mixed together, laced with bramble, licorice snap and apple wood. The fruit takes a really nice encore through the finish, while a dark earth hint moves underneath. Best from 2023 through 2038.—J.M.”

BOND Estates Quella, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $649, that’s $616.55 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The Quella is somber and brooding in 2015. Dark cherry, plum smoke, tobacco, leather, spice and scorched earth give the 2015 distinctive baritone inflections. There is quite a bit of density and textural resonance, but at the same time, the Quella is not particularly expressive. Perhaps bottling has affected the Quella more than it has the other wines in the range, as it was quite showy from barrel. I have seen Quella go through a period of reticence after bottling, so I won’t be at all surprised if all it needs is time.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “The 2015 Quella is a darker, more mineral-laced wine and offers a classic Quella bouquet of black fruits, black truffle, tobacco, and dried earth. It’s full-bodied, deep and layered on the palate, with ripe, present tannins and terrific elegance as well as purity. It has the balance and texture to shine today, yet the class to evolve for 20 years or more.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97 points “Bottled in early 2018, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Quella gives aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries and mulberries with touches of tobacco, new leather, iron ore and truffles plus a hint of tree back. The palate is full-bodied, muscular and laden with earth and mineral layers, finishing with persistent savory notes.”

BOND Estates Quella, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $819, that’s $778.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 Quella is rich, ample and beautifully resonant in the glass. There’s terrific depth here and tons of class. Blood orange, game, licorice, tobacco, lavender and dried herbs give the Quella beguiling aromatic presence to play off its muscular, brooding personality. The 2018 needs a few years to soften, but it is already compelling, to say the least.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “Boasts black currant, fig and loganberry fruit flavors that are tightly packed yet nicely expressive already, while the backdrop of signed alder, juniper, bay leaf and warm loam adds extra dimension and length through the finish. Not shy on power, but everything is in proportion. Best from 2024 through 2040.—J.M.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 95-97 points “A barrel sample, the 2018 Quella has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with the most gorgeous perfume of violets, red and black plums, Morello cherries and cassis plus hints of iron ore and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers lovely energy and tension, framed by fine-grained tannins and finishing with beautiful purity.”

BOND Estates St. Eden, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $699, that’s $664.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“Moving to the 2015s tasted from bottle, this is an incredible vintage for this estate and there are two perfect wines in the lineup. First up, the 2015 St. Eden, from a hillside of red volcanic soils near Oakville, boasts a saturated purple color and heavenly notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and huge crushed rock-like minerality. It’s full-bodied, deep, and layered on the palate, with incredible concentration, yet it stays seamless, pure, and perfectly balanced. It’s a magical wine to drink over the coming 2-3 decades.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 99 points “Bottled in early 2018, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 St. Eden springs from the glass with exuberant blueberry pie, potpourri and spice cake scents followed by a black raspberry, cassis and preserved plums core plus a touch of wild sage. Full-bodied, plush and decadently fruited, it completely packs the palate with layer upon layer of black fruit preserves, finishing very long with those spices coming through.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2015 St. Eden is another wine in this lineup that is not quite as expressive as it can be. Firm tannins dominate over softer contours that so often make St. Eden such an alluring wine. Time in the glass brings out an attractive set of dark cherry, plum, leather and tobacco notes. Even so, the 2015 is going to need a number of years to be at its very best.”

BOND Estates St. Eden, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $819, that’s $778.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 St. Eden is impressive. Dense and powerful in the glass, the 2018 is done in a style that emphasizes freshness and vibrancy, reflecting a generational transition in all of these wines that is most apparent here. Dark fruit, licorice, mocha, spice and chocolate begin to emerge with time, but the St. Eden is much less forthcoming than in the past. In fact, the 2018 might very well be the most reticent St. Eden I have ever tasted. That energy will serve it well in the cellar. Readers accustomed to the voluptuous, lush St. Edens of the past will not find that in the 2018. As much as the style has changed in this wine, I am not surprised to see that. A complete vertical of the Bond wines a few years ago showed the St. Eden to have the most condensed arc of peak drinkability of the Bond wines.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 96-98 points “A barrel sample, the 2018 St. Eden is deep garnet-purple in color. The nose is a little closed at this nascent stage, offering broody glimpses at blackcurrant jelly, boysenberries and black raspberries before opening out to a spicy undercurrent of cloves, black pepper and cumin seed. The palate is built like a brick house with a solid structure of ripe, grainy tannins and a lively backbone framing the full-bodied, muscular fruit, finishing long and layered.”

BOND Estates Vecina, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $819, that’s $778.05 at 5% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“A regal, soaring wine, the 2018 Vecina is immediately captivating. Red fruit, iron, dried rose petal and exotic spice all soar out of the glass. Over the last two months the Vecina has acquired stunning aromatic presence to play off its deep, layered fruit. The 2018 is an absolute gem in the making. As a reminder, Vecina is sourced from Vine Hill Ranch, at the southern end of Oakville, where the Cabernets are distinguished by a beguiling combination of power and savory/earthy intensity.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97-99 points “A barrel sample, the 2018 Vecina displays a deep garnet-purple color and offers slowly emerging classic notes of black currants, black cherries, blackberry pie and cedar chest with hints of charcoal, tar, pencil lead and fragrant earth. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness supporting the generous black fruits, finishing on a lingering mineral note.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “Ripe and focused, with a solidly built core of black currant and fig paste lined with tar and loam. Ends with an encore of fruit swathed in bittersweet cocoa and tobacco, giving this a muscular feel, but there’s also a nicely buried iron note that adds cut. This begs for cellaring. Best from 2024 through 2040.—J.M.”
