Andre Clouet Silver Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature NV 1.5L Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Andre Clouet Silver Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature NV 3L Displayed Price: $279, that’s $265.05 at 5% off and $251.10 at 10% off, 15 double-magnums in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“[Reviewed Apr 2021] Clouet’s NV Silver Brut Nature Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that was disgorged without any dosage. This disgorgement displays a medium intense golden color and a complex and refined bouquet of ripe and pureed apples and discreet chalky as well as brioche aromas. The palate is elegant, straight and fresh, very pure and salty on the finish. This is a challenging Brut Nature that needs to be aged for two or three years to gain complexity and finesse and to smooth its current edges. The finish is mineral, limestone and salty but also a bit drying at this moment.”

Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Brut Nature 2017 1.5L Displayed Price: $259, that’s $246.05 at 5% off and $233.10 at 10% off, 5 magnums in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes is excellent, bursting with aromas of golden orchard fruit, warm spices, honeycomb, plums and toasted bread. Full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s rich and sapid, with a layered core of fruit, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Seamless and complete, this bottling is particularly strong this year.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes (Magnum) is the most potent and tightly wound of these three Champagnes from Christophe Baron. It offers up a beguiling mix of graphite, orange confit, dried flowers, earthiness, chamomile and spice, all in a dense, inward style that demands cellaring. The Alouttes shows the more earthy, savory side of Meunier. Disgorged: May, 2021.”

Diebolt-Vallois ‘Fleur de Passion’ Blanc de Blancs Brut (Late Disgorgement) 2008 1.5L Displayed Price: $799, that’s $759.05 at 5% off and $719.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Late disgorgement release by the winery.
Winery note “Pure Chardonnay made from our oldest plots located in Cramant Grand Cru terroir. This Blanc de Blancs, 100% 2008 harvest, is vinified in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation nor filtration. This bottling in 2009 is prolonged by an ageing on lees during 13 years in our cellars… The Champagne Fleur de Passion is the jewel in the range from the house of Diebolt-Vallois. It is only made in the very best years. This wine is created entirely in barrel, following the major principles of the first wine Jacques Diebolt made together with his grandfather in 1953. Fleur de Passion is a precious and delicate champagne, it is complex, intense and long on the palate. 100% chardonnay.”

Provence:

Peyrassol ‘Le Clos’ Rosé, Cotes de Provence 2021 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 14 magnums in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points
“Vivid onion skin color. A highly perfumed and complex bouquet evokes fresh citrus and pit fruits, strawberry and pungent flowers, along with building mineral and succulent herb elements. Shows excellent clarity and depth to its juicy red fruit, nectarine and mango flavors, which are sweetened by a background of vanilla note. Finishes impressively long and silky, with the mineral and floral note resonating.”
Wine & Spirits 93 points “In 2021, Petrassol credits the micro climate at their estate for the late budbreak that evaded late-April frosts, also escaping a fire (merci, le mistral), a hailstorm in nearby Pignan *blocked by hills) and flooding. More than a vintage survivor, this wine is chewy and immediately pleasurable; it captured our panel’s attention in the sweetness of its fruit. Its substantial weight would work well with a range of dishes, or stand as a meal on its own, letting it saturate your mouth, cherry-blossom accents peeking out around the edges of the finish. Its complexity is subtle but present, like a carefully-measured craft cocktail.”

Peyrassol ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rosé, Cotes de Provence 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 5 magnums in stock now
Importer note
“Very pale, lychee pink in color. The nose is fine and elegant. Complex, releasing white fleshed fruit and citrus fruits aromas, along with white floral notes. The palate is straightforward and clean. Fine and silky, it is soft, delicate and lively. The freshness of the finish is balanced with a subtle hint of saltiness.”

Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selection in 2019!
Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe A 2016 1.5L Displayed Price: $899, that’s $854.05 at 5% off and $809.10 at 10% off, 17 magnums in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 100 points
“This is a rich, perfumed wine, with dense tannins and intense layers of black plum and spice. The palate is firmly built yet broadened out by plump dark-fruit tones and honed by a solid, dry core. Drink from 2025. -Roger Voss”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 98+ points, Neal Martin-Vinous 97 points, Jeb Dunnuck 97 points, Wine Spectator 96 points

Chateau Gloria, Saint-Julien 2016 1.5L Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 4 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“The 2016 Gloria is one of the undisputed stars of this vintage. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2016 possesses tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried rose petal all add complexity. In 2016 Gloria is a real head-turner. It should be a fabulous value as well. There is not much else to say.”

Chateau Léoville-Poyferré, Saint-Julien 2015 1.5L Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 7 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is cut from the same cloth as the 2016, yet is more sexy, rounded and opulent. Notes of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings and graphite all emerge from this unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty that’s absolutely loaded with fruit and texture. Reminding me of the 2003, yet only fresher, don’t miss this beauty. It should be drinkable in 3-4 years and last for 3-4 decades.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2015 Léoville-Poyferré is spectacular. Inky, dense and explosive, the 2015 possesses off the chart richness, with soft contours, no hard edges and exceptional balance. All the elements are simply fused together. inky blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, new leather, blueberry jam, exotic spice and violet notes are all beautifully delineated throughout. Fresh, vibrant and totally sexy, Léoville-Poyferré is one of the wines of the vintage. Don’t miss it! Tasted two times.”

Wine Spectator #2 Wine of the Year in 2021
Chāteau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, Pauillac 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $499, that’s $474.05 at 5% off and $449.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ points
“The 2018 Chāteau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is a monster of a wine with an almost Chāteau Latour-like stature and structure, offering deep, backward, slightly reductive notes of blackcurrants, crushed stone, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf. Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon mixed with 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with masses of tannins, beautiful mid-palate density, and a great finish. As I’ve commented previously, the up-front, sexy style of the past (due to the larger Merlot content, I believe) has been replaced by a more regal, at times austere profile. Nevertheless, it’s still its own wine and very Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in style. This 2018 is going to need 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40+ years.”
Wine Spectator 98 points, Wine Enthusiast 98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97+ points, Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97+ points

Burgundy:

Domaine des Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 90 points
“The 2022 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has a quite backward nose that needs more tension. The palate is well-balanced with fine acidity, much more expressive than the aromatics, with a peachy, seductive finish. Lovely. But the nose needs to step up a gear.”

Domaine de Montille Les Pezerolles, Pommard Premier Cru 2016 1.5L Displayed Price: $289, that’s $274.55 at 5% off and $260.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 91-93 points
“(from the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there’s a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins.”

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Les Cras, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $879, that’s $835.05 at 5% off and $791.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is similarly compelling, soaring from the glass with aromas of red berries, exotic spices, orange rind, musk and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with a deep and vibrant core of fruit that’s framed by fine, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and intensely mineral finish. This is a magical Chambolle-Musigny worth a special effort to seek out.”

Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $1,349, that’s $1,281.55 at 5% off and $1,214.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 95-97 points
“The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an airy and generous bouquet with lifted black fruit, hoisin and light roasted chestnut aromas, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautiful line of acidity, svelte and harmonious with a slightly grainy-textured finish. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. “It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years,” remarked Alex Seysses. Proof of that is evident by tasting this superb Charmes-Chambertin.”

Rhone:

Delas Freres Hermitage Les Bessards 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $449, that’s $426.55 at 5% off and $404.10 at 10% off, 7 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 99 points
“My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine.”

Emmanuel Darnaud Saint Joseph La Dardouille 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $95, that’s $90.25 at 5% off and $85.50 at 10% off, 5 magnums in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Every bit as good as I thought it was from barrel, the monumental 2018 Saint Joseph La Dardouille is one of the best Saint Josephs to have ever crossed this taster’s lips—certainly in the Top 10. Hints of cedar accent deep notes of blackberry liqueur, underlain by a bed of crushed granite. Full-bodied, richly concentrated and textured, it’s a prodigious effort that must be tasted to be believed. Despite the size and extract, there’s a sense of cool restraint and even a bit of refreshment on the lengthy finish. Give it another year or two; it should drink well for at least a decade beyond that.”

Domaine Eric et Joel Durand Cornas Empreintes 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 10 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points
“Iron, peppered game, smoked black and blue fruits, and new leather notes emerge from the 2019 Cornas Empreintes, and it’s medium to full-bodied and wonderfully balanced, with ripe tannins and one hell of a great finish. It’s another pure, balanced, fruit-loaded beauty from this estate that has tons of character. This cuvée comes from hillside parcels (a mix of granite and limestone) and 30-year-old vines. It was 75% destemmed and spent a year in 20% new barrels.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95 points “Sure, the 2019 Cornas Empreintes is lightly cedary up front, but those notes are more than balanced by crushed stone, salted licorice, and bold cassis and blueberry flavors. Full-bodied and concentrated, this is a rock-solid Cornas with a long, dusty finish, capable of aging and improving up to two decades. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albion 2020 1.5L Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 36+ magnums in stock now
Wine Spectator 92 points
“Ripe and polished yet fresh, this red seduces with ripe, generous anise, vanilla-laced blackberry and cherry flavors, then turns dark and brooding on the palate, with smoldering iron, garrigue, menthol, black pepper and dark earth notes framed by fine-grained tannins. Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Clairette. Drink now through 2027”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2019 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 7 magnums in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Dark and winey, this structured offering packs red and black currant paste flavors together with threads of charcoal, warm stone, bay leaf and savory, ending with a long tug of cast iron through the finish. A blue chip for cellaring. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035.”.—J.M.
Grapelive 95+ points

Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Crau Rouge 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 12 magnums in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Traditionally dominated by clairette (45%) and grenache blanc (30%), then roussanne and bourboulenc. The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid. Drink or hold.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A nice throwback style, with a range of dried lavender and rosemary notes peeking out from a cedar-framed core of mulled cherry, blood orange and plum fruit. Features warm stone, licorice root and tobacco leaf accents that fill in through the energetic finish. A wine that’s very confident in its terroir. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,495 cases imported. — JM”

Loire:

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu 2021 1.5L Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 6 magnums in stock now
Importer note
“The Clos de Beaujeu is among the most historic sites in the village of Chavignol. In the 14th century the Clos de Beaujeu supplied the Cathedral of Bourges with white wine. At that time, Sancerre was famous for it’s red wines. Boulay’s Clos de Beaujeu is a richer, denser step up from the Chavignol village wine.”

Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Neore 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $699, that’s $664.05 at 5% off and $629.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 96 points
“Clarity is a term that accurately describes the 2018 Sancerre Clos La Neore. It has a pure and intense core of fruit. But it’s not fruity. It’s a sophisticated style with a distinctive aromatic profile- chamomile tea, lemon, honey, and almond meal and an almost tonic-like edge. While showing the ripeness of the 2018 season, it retains its shape with a corset of acidity and phenolics that guide the wine on and on.”

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Clisson Cru 2017 1.5L Displayed Price: $61.90, that’s $58.81 at 5% off and $55.71 at 10% off, 5 magnums in stock now
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 points
“The 2017 Clisson from this organic estate has been wild fermented and has spent two years in cuve on lees (the minimum for this cru). While ripe and rounded, which is a character of the Clisson cru, and redolent of lees-derived character, this retains a lovely precision and vivacity. Appealing clarity of apple and citrus fruit and light in body. This is a fresher, more defined style of Clisson from a cooler season. It’s pure, clean and provides definition.”

Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc ‘a Francoise..’ 2020 1.5L Displayed Price: $145, that’s $137.75 at 5% off and $130.50 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Yohan Castaing-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2020 Anjou Blanc à François(e)… is showing well today, with a gourmand, fruity bouquet with aromas of ripe orchard fruits, exotic fruits, lemon oil and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it’s dense and a bit phenolic with a long, penetrating finish. Naturally dense and powerful, this cuvée is also energetic and saline.”

La Rioja Alta.

La Rioja Alta S.A. Gran Reserva 904, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2015 750ml $89 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish. 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano. Drink or hold.”
Tim Atkin 96 Points “One of a pair of current releases of 904, both of them from warmer vintages, this delightful 2015 is a felicitous cuvée of Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. All sourced from higher altitude vineyards, this will reward further time in bottle, showing classic sweet spices, fine tannins, layers of red and black fruits and chalky freshness.”

La Rioja Alta S.A. Vina Alberdi Reserva, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2019 750ml $24.50 special, 36 bottles available
Wine Spectator 91 Points “Offers hints of toast, smoke and spices that lace flavors of soft cherry and plum fruit, mandarin orange peel and dried flowers and herbs. A well-knit, medium-bodied red framed by lightly chewy tannins. Drink now through 2029. 46,000 cases made, 16,500 cases imported.”

La Rioja Alta S.A. Vina Ardanza Reserva, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2016 750ml $41.90 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 95 Points “Savory and complex with dried orange peel, cedar and plenty of sweet spices, walnuts, caramel, dried mushrooms and pine needles. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it.”
Wine Advocate 94+ Points “The 2016 Viña Ardanza Reserva was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha that matured in used American oak barrels for three years, where it was hand-racked from barrel to barrel six times in the case of Tempranillo and five times for the Garnacha, as it had a slightly shorter élevage of 30 months. Against all odds, I found the 2016 to be fresher than the 2015 and less developed, despite the fact that winemaker Julio Sáenz told me he considers it a warmer year. But I have found many wines I like in 2016, and the wine feels very clean and quite harmonious, younger and less developed, with more primary notes and a velvety mouthfeel. 600,000 bottles produced. The wine was bottled in June 2020.”
Tim Atkin 94 Points “Ardanza is a traditional pan-regional Rioja that marries Tempranillo from Cenicero and Rodezno with 20% Garnacha from Tudelilla. Aged in lightly toasted American barrels, it’s sweet, spicy and complex, with leather, wild strawberry and red pepper notes, fine, scented oak and the freshness of the vintage.”

CHAMPAGNE

Billecart-Salmon.

Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut, Champagne, France 2013 1.5L $179 special, 3 magnums available
Wine Spectator 94 Points “A vibrant Champagne, finely balanced and lacy in texture, serving as an elegant canvas for layered flavors of yellow peach, chopped almond, cherry, toast point and preserved lemon. Minerally smoke, chalk and spice notes play on the finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged November 2021.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 Points “A finely textured Champagne, this is definitely dry, still young, and with great potential. The wine’s minerality combines with the texture to give both tension and richness. So it needs to soften further to be ready to drink from 2025.”

OREGON

Bergstrom Wines.

While many wineries in Oregon have moved to a more fruit-driven and accessible style of Pinot Noir, Josh Bergstrom of Bergström Wines did the opposite, looking to maintain finesse, communicate terroir and create wines that excite upon release but stand the test of time. Just one taste of the Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir, his “entry-level” or introduction to the brand, is enough to impress even the most demanding customers. -Eric Guido, Vinous

HOT DEAL!  Bergstrom Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $49 special, 12 bottles available
Winemaker Notes “Pale ruby with red hues. This wine teems with sweet red McIntosh apples, freshly picked raspberries, and notes of pink peppercorn and dried roses. An underlying ferrous salinity on the palate contributes complexity to cranberry, Bing cherry, licorice, and clove flavors. It is sweet and succulent at its core and will continue to integrate beautifully over the years. In its youth, there is an undeniable balance between age-worthy tannins and tart acidity. The 2022 vintage brought us wines rich with structure and fruity spice, vividly displayed here. Drink 2024 – 2031+.”

Bergstrom Le Pre Du Col Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge, USA 2021 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 Points “Medium ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Le Pré du Col Vineyard has pretty scents of raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and mushroom, revealing more aromatic detail as it spends time in the glass. The light-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with concentrated fruit and loads of botanical and floral accents on the long, layered finish. I love this fragrant, detailed expression!”
Wine Spectator 94 Points “Brooding, with an appealing earthy, forest floor accent to the blueberry and dusky spice flavors as this builds tension and density toward medium-grained tannins. Hands off for now. Best from 2024 through 2034.”

Bergstrom ‘Old Stones’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $47.50 special, 6 bottles available
Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Chardonnay Old Stones wafts up with a spicy, citrus-driven bouquet of lemon oils, hints of mint and crisp green apple. Luxuriously smooth with a pleasant inner sweetness, it flows across the palate with seductively ripe orchard fruits and sweet spices. It concludes with incredible length and potency, yet amazingly fresh with a lingering sapid fruit concentration. For all of the ripeness in this glass, the 2021 finishes with zero grams of residual sugar. What a darling.”

Kelley Fox

These are the only listings for these wines in the United States today:

Kelley Fox Albarino, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $24 special, 36 bottles available
Winemaker’s Notes “This small bottling of Albarino was fun to produce and is intended to be a super casual white table wine. This was whole cluster pressed and spent its entire life in a small stainless tank. It is brilliantly transparent pale, pastel yellow in appearance. This nose is full of mixed tropical citrus with a nod to peach skin and a green energy that is life-filled and refreshing as opposed to under-ripe and austere. The mouth is juicy and mirrors the tropical citrus nose with just a hint of pleasing plant-y character carried by racy acidity, a smooth texture, and a really nice, clean finish.”

Kelley Fox Gruner Veltliner, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml $33 special, 24 bottles available
Winemaker’s Notes “The Gruner is always a really fun wine to produce, and I’m happy every year that I can offer this bottling to you. Finally, there’s a bit more! This wine was tank-fermented and is ML-complete. It’s the colour of sunshine and is highly transparent. I love looking at it in the glass. The nose is full of fresh, creamy citrus, melon, delicious warming spices and minerals. The mouth is the same and has a certain build to it that reminds me of Juhfark or Furmint. The texture is both rich and weightless, and yes, it has the classic Gruner finsh of a touch of white pepper. It has wonderful acidity one might expect from an alpine wine. For me, this wine has radiant energy.”

Two Hands.

While initially a proponent of the bigger is better model of Shiraz, recent years have seen greater refinement and increasing focus in the vineyard [at Two Hands]. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in his Holy Grail vineyard, located in Seppeltsfield, where the quest for improved fruit quality is seemingly never-ending, obtaining stunning results. –Angus Hughson, Vinous

Two Hands Wines Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, Australia 2021 750ml $24 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90+ Points “This 2021 Angel’s Share Shiraz is pert and frisky and lifted in the fruit department, underpinned by a mineral skein of tannins. It still needs a little more time to come together, but everything is in the right place, putting it on the right track in the future. Lovely wine.”
Vinous 90 Points “The 2021 Angels’ Share is unashamedly built to please. It is bursting with vibrant sweet fruits with red cherry, licorice and fruit pastilles delivered with good intensity. That approachability is echoed on the palate with a gentle frame supported by luscious fruits through to a supple finish of decent length.”
Wine Spectator 90 Points “Seamless and expressive as well as wonderfully aromatic, with rose water and sarsaparilla details as well as blackberry jam, red licorice and oolong tea flavors, plus firm tannins and fresh acidity. Drink now.”

Two Hands Wines Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, Australia 2021 750ml $28 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 92 Points “A deep color in the glass. The 2021 Sexy Beast is open for business and immediately launches into decadent and luscious blackcurrant jam and dark chocolate aromas but is nicely tempered by a gentle leafiness and toasty oak. It continues in the bold, high-octane style on the palate with significant upfront impact and then dense, dark berry fruit touches with serious power and length.
Juicy acidity and oak tannins also provide a good backbone to enjoy over the short to medium term.”
Wine Spectator 92 Points “Strikes appealing balance between power and elegance, with concentrated salted black licorice overtones to the blackberry, blueberry and cassis flavors. Shows notes of rosemary, Earl Grey and tobacco that mingle with dense tannins, which have both grip and polish to them. Expressive finish. Drink now.”

Turning the Page- Library Releases from Olga Raffault…

Olga and her husband Pierre operated this estate together until he died unexpectedly just before harvest in 1947. Olga was left to run the business, but was assisted by Ernest Zenninger, a German prisoner who had found refuge and work at Raffault. Ernest stayed on, becoming the winemaker and working closely with Olga’s son Jean Raffault. Olga’s granddaughter Sylvie and her husband Eric de la Vigerie took over in 2000 and now run the estate.

Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses, Loire, France 2008 750ml $79 special, 9 bottles available
Jason Wilson-Vinous 92 Points“Light ruby in color, bright and fresh, featuring aromas and flavors of tomatoes and cherries throughout. Balanced and cool, with a hint of dark minerality on the finish. Incredibly fresh and seamless. Has a long life ahead. Aged one year in foudre.”
Importer’s Notes “The “Les Picasses” vineyard stands out from the rest: old vines of 50-ish years on a fairly steep slope from the riverbank that is alluvial clay with a chalk limestone base. The fruit is particularly expressive of cassis and dark cherries with a terrific mineral content and good acidity for structure.” –Louis Dressner

Stunning quality and value from the world’s most esteemed Barolo house.
HOT DEAL!  Vietti Castiglione, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $59 special, 18 bottles available
Vinous 96 Points “The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here.”
James Suckling 96 Points “Charming and enticing with aromas of sweet cherries, strawberries, cedar, dried herbs and some baking spices. Sensational concentration with a vivid center-palate on the full to medium body. The fine and firm tannins are harmoniously balanced by the succulent red currants and crisp acidity.”

Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria, Barbaresco DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $135 special, only 6 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “Very perfumed and pretty with sliced strawberries and citrus blossom. Plenty of forest berries, too. Medium to full body. Creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Fine texture and gorgeous. Vegan. Hard not to drink but will be even better in 2027.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94+ Points “The 2020 Barbaresco, from vines in Roncaglie, sizzles with tension. Bright, redtoned fruit, orange peel, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, the Roncaglie is quite showy. That is hardly the case in 2020, a vintage in which the wine is classically austere and in need of time. Super-classic.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $235 special, only 6 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “Harmonious and seductive with endless counts of aromas in good depth. Strawberries, crushed raspberries, fresh lavender, tile, mineral and mild spices. Medium to full body with chalky, powerful tannins. Bright and tense at the center with extensive development with sour cherries, mineral, white pepper and grapefruit. The lengthy finish is focused, precise and taut.”
Vinous 94 Points “The 2020 Barolo Brunate is a dark, beguiling wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, leather, game, licorice and incense lend gorgeous sepia-toned nuance. Brooding and inward, the 2020 clearly needs time. It is a super-classic Brunate that is hard to read in the early going, but the weight, substance and power are clearly there. Dense, meaty and dark, the 2020 shows Serralunga-like intensity.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2020 750ml $259 special, only 6 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “Impressive depth of color and brightness from this Cerequio that comes with so much fruit. So fragrant and complex. Fresh brambly raspberries, red cherries, grapefruit and mineral. Pure, ripe and racy, with fully resolved tannins and a tense, compact finish. Expressive and impressive! Vegan. Already approachable for the depth of fruit, but better from 2027 for additional complexity.”
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 95+ Points “The 2020 Barolo Cerequio once again confirms that buying this vineyard is one of the smartest decisions Vietti ever made. A wine of nuance and class, the Cerequio captures all the pedigree of this great site. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, blood orange, spice and mint soar out of the glass, all framed by nervy tannins that convey classicism. This is an exotic, racy Barolo.”

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2020 750ml $235 special, only 6 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now if you are willing to embrace austerity, but this should be better from 2027.”
Vinous 93 Points “The 2020 Barolo Lazzarito is a blend of fruit picked before and after the early October rains. It marries power and finesse to a notable degree. Dark red fruit, menthol, licorice, crushed rocks and dried herbs open nicely in the glass. This is a bit light for a Serralunga Barolo, although the tannic structure is there. This is missing a bit of personality.”

Daniel Landi Las Uvas de La Ira 2018 750ml Display Price: $31.90 special, 22 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 Points “…The different vineyards are fermented separately in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and a very gentle vinification, one-third with very long macerations to provide structure and depth, one-third with a very short maceration to provide fragrance, and the remaining third finished the fermentation without skins (like a white) to add juiciness … This is a little less aromatic and more austere but very focused and bright, from a village where the wines are serious and have a chalky texture, less floral but more citrus, a bit more backward. It has a compact palate, with very fine tannins and a more chalky finish.”

Meleto Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Trebbio 2018 Display Price: $44.50 special, 19 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 Points “Here’s a new submission from the stunning Castello di Meleto, which has stone walls and towers in Gaiole in Chianti. The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Trebbio is a terrific discovery. Made with all Sangiovese from a single vineyard, this wine offers fruit brightness, balance and evident mineral definition. These results are linear and sharp, and the fruit is slightly more vibrant here compared to the Poggiarso.”

Ulysses Vineyard Cabernet Oakville Napa 2018 750ml Display Price: $145 special, 5 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points “Just about pure perfection and the finest wine I’ve tasted from this address, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all from a site just north of Dominus. This deep, inky hued beauty offers up a beautiful, full-bodied, richly textured, and incredibly concentrated style that carries ample black and blue fruit as well as notes of crushed stone, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil. It has the focused, structured style of the 2018 vintage and is going to benefit from 4-6 years (if not a decade) of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.”

WAS $49
Vieux Telegraphe Cdp Telegramme 2019 750ml Display Price: $45 special, 12 bottles available
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 Points “Deep violet. Ripe, spice-accented dark berry and cherry preserve scents show strong garrigue and floral accents. Pliant in texture and broad in the mouth, offering sappy boysenberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors and a peppery topnote. Finishes long and gently chewy, with the floral and spice notes repeating.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 Points “Full-bodied, rich and highly textural, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Telegramme is atypically concentrated and dense, reflecting the addition of more old-vine Grenache to the cuvée. Black cherries, salted licorice and dark chocolate all make appearances, and the wine finishes long and velvety.”

Dom Perignon Luminous Label 2009 750ml $299 special, 4 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Batard-Montrachet.”
Decanter 96 Points “Unbroken sun through August and early September helped to shape an idyllic harvest, on 12th September. Superb maturity of fruit in flawless health has produced a wine with wafting scents of both fresh and confit of spiced lemon and wild cherry. Despite the heat, the wine has freshness, vitality and length. Still a youngster, this will grow greatly by 2019. A more stylish son of the ’03, and cousin of the slender and charming ’06. Disgorged June 2016.”

Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2010 750ml $1,119 special, 1 bottle available
Decanter 100 Points “Smoked grilled tar on the nose, it feels both very 2010 and supremely Mouton – accomplished and confident. A more glamorous, enticing edge than the other Pauillac Firsts at this 10 year window. There are plentiful tannins but they are lined with air, and the overall feel is of plush, plumped fruits, like being rolled-up in luxurious sheets. It is very different in character to the other two Pauillac Firsts, but no less enjoyable. It feels higher in alcohol, more Cos than Lafite in terms of personality, in the way that Pichon Baron is more Latour than Comtesse, but it is nuanced and clever and surprising. Drinking Window 2025 – 2050.”
Wine Spectator 99 Points “This remains the stunner, a battleship of a wine, brimming with cassis, blackberry and fig fruit that has melded together now, with the backdrop of alder, bay leaf and menthol starting to emerge a bit more. The long finish is loaded with grip, pulling the fruit and other components together. And then there’s that flash of iron at the very end. Awesome wine.—Non-blind Mouton-Rothschild vertical (March 2017). Best from 2025 through 2060. — JM”

Dal Forno Romano Vigneto Monte Lodoletta, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, Italy 2012 750ml $379 special, 13 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “A decadent nose of treacle tart, chocolate, tar, tons of black fruit such as blackberries and mulberries and even ash and licorice. A dense, layered mouthfeel makes for a full-bodied palate that’s explosive yet somehow so refined and pretty all at the same time. The finish goes on and on. Incredible now, but better to wait for this giant to settle well into 2020.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta is a beautifully complete wine, even at this young stage in its life. You feel the youth of the wine in the tightness of the tannins and in the finely knit texture of its concentrated flavor profile. The big surprise is the wine’s fresh acidity that has been carefully safeguarded despite the heat of the vintage and the drying process so deftly executed at this landmark estate. The wine shows no sign of oxidation or evolution, not yet. There is intricate fruit layering with cherry, blackberry, spice and mesquite delivered with such precision, that level of detail defies the very bold and opulent essence of the wine. It has only just started its evolutionary journey.”

Chateau Canon, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France 2015 750ml $349 special, 34 bottles available
#1 Wine of the Year – James Suckling
Antonio Galloni 100 Points “From the very beginning, the 2015 Canon has made an eloquent case for itself as one of the wines of the vintage. Multiple tastings from bottle only confirm what several early tastings hinted at: the 2015 Canon is simply extraordinary in every way. Sumptuous and exotic, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, the 2015 grabs hold of all the senses and never lets up. A rush of red fruit intermingled with floral notes, spice and smoke notes effortlessly runs up the wine’s vertical structure as the 2015 thrills with every twist and turn. The 2015 Canon is a rare wine that is both hedonistic and intellectual – well, maybe it is a bit more hedonistic-leaning. It doesn’t matter. Don’t miss it. This 2015 is masterpiece from General Manager Nicolas Auderbert and his team at Canon.”
Neal Martin 100 Points “The 2015 Canon was a benchmark wine that seemed to revitalize this historic estate. I was crossing my fingers that it would not disappoint in bottle and I am glad to say that it delivers the goods. It has a very intense bouquet (just as it showed out of barrel) with laser-like precision offering wild strawberry, raspberry preserve, wet limestone and hints of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, clean and fresh with pure black and red fruit whose every atom appears infused with minerals. The mouth is tingling long after the wine has exited and your brain is thinking…when is the next sip coming? It is frankly heads and shoulders above almost every Saint Émilion this vintage, to reaffirm, a benchmark for this historic estate that will give pleasure to many over the coming years. Astonishing.”
James Suckling 100 Points “Seductive. The nose draws you in deep: It’s like staring into a well of pristine dark cherries, dark plums, blackberries and mulberries. All the oak is perfectly subsumed. The palate’s flawless with immense depth and power and it’s so balanced as to appear to float. Immaculate fresh dark-berry and plum flavors. Silky and deep, ribbon-like finish. Perfect.”

Chateau Angelus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France 2016 1.5L $899 special, 17 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 100 Points “TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTION IN 2019. This is a rich, perfumed wine, with dense tannins and intense layers of black plum and spice. The palate is firmly built yet broadened out by plump dark-fruit tones and honed by a solid, dry core. Drink from 2025. -Roger Voss”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 98+ Points “Sporting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2016 Angélus erupts from the glass with powerful notes of blackberry pie, ripe black cherries and juicy black plums with an undercurrent of star anise, rose petals, chocolate mint, pencil shavings and woodsmoke plus a waft of allspice. The palate is pure decadence. Medium to full-bodied, rich and generously fruited, this wine is by no means heavy—it positively glimmers with freshness and vivacity, lending an ethereal nature to all that richness and power, beautifully framed by velvety tannins and finishing with epic length. The generosity, layers and plushness make for an absolutely DELICIOUS drink right now, but I’d suggest waiting 3-5 more years for the fireworks to really begin.”

Dow’s Vintage Port, Portugal 2017 750ml $99 special, 16 bottles available
Dow’s Vintage Port, Portugal 2017 1.5L $219 special, 3 bottles available
Dow’s Vintage Port, Portugal 2017 375ml $59 special, 10 half bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 98 points “The 2017 Dow’s Vintage Port showed a slight reduction and required more time to really open in the glass. Typical of Dow’s it has a more backward and introspective bouquet compared to its peers, scents of blackberry, clove, wild mint, cassis and vanilla, gradually gaining more intensity with aeration. The palate is simply glorious. It is built around a compelling tannic frame that seems finer than any Dow’s I have encountered apart from the ethereal 2011. There is so much energy coiled up in this Port, a sense of symmetry that is enthralling and yet you just know that it needs to be cellared for 15-20 years for it to reveal its full potential. For serious Port-lovers. One of the vintages most cerebral offerings. Total production is 5,250 cases.”
James Suckling 98 points “Pure grape aromas that remind me of fermenting must but then goes to stems and dried flowers. Full-bodied, medium sweet with fine-grained tannins that coat your palate. Powerful and muscular yet remains agile and beautiful. Grows on your palate. Wonderful ripe fruit in the middle palate. Try after 2030.”

Bibi Graetz Testamatta Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy 2018 750ml $99 special, 12 bottles available
Decanter 100 Points “Finely textured, with a nuanced perfume that fills the glass and takes you to the intense underbrush of Tuscany. Succulent and yet savoury, this has a lilting freshness that is overlaid with ripe berry fruits, sage and white pepper spice, and clear minerality in terms of its scraping texture that makes your mouth water on the finish. Feels light and sculpted and yet has an intensity that skewers you to the spot. This is a great wine, with scope and imagination that doesn’t want to let you go. Genuinely stands out among the wines of this tasting, and these are a fine array of wines. As with Colore, Bibi Graetz selects only old vines, the youngest 50 years old from five different vineyard sites across Tuscany, all farmed organically. Fermentations in open 225l barrels with natural yeasts and manual punch downs. -Jane Anson”
James Suckling 97 Points “Very subtle aromas of cherries, bark, black truffles and flowers. Hints of crushed stones. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and solid with a very tight, minerally structure. Very long and intense. Racy and bright at the end. Powerful, orange-peel and citrus-fruit undertones. Salty and minerally. This needs time to develop in the bottle. Extremely structured. A wine not to touch until after 2023.”

Vietti: Landmark Piedmont Producer 3-21-24

On Sale Now!

Vietti is one of the benchmark producers in Barolo—a name that belongs alongside Conterno, Mascarello, and Gaja in the short-list for the greatest in the region. Their style can be described as neo-classical. The wines aren’t ultra-traditional, but they do combine what the former owners and winemakers, Luca Currado and Elena Penna, value most about traditional wines of the Piedmont with modern cellar practices. (A note about Currado and Penna: they sold the estate in 2016, but stayed on until 2023 to assist with the transition. All of our wines on offer were made by them, except for the Moscato.) The result is a set of wines that show tons of Nebbiolo character and distinct terroir signatures, but with a certain elegance that’s all Vietti.

The Barolos are the “Grand Cru” of the region and the crowning jewels of the estate. They represent the best sites under the Vietti’s spade. Organically farmed across the board, these wines offer a fantastic snapshot of the diversity of terroir in Barolo with a distinctive house style. Highly collectible and crafted in limited amounts, these promise decades of enjoyment after they shed their baby fat.

“A beautiful timorasso with salted caramel, sliced mango, pear and apple aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Bright and vivid acidity at the end. A lovely combination of ripe fruit and wild, crisp acidity. Vegan. About 30% aged in ceramic. Drink now.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “A pale straw color, the 2021 Derthona Timorasso is set to be released in May of 2023. It has a savory richness to its aromatics of pine resin, fresh lime flower, and melon and is tangy on the palate, with medium body, saline, the stony texture of wet asphalt, Meyer lemon, and chamomile. It feels very much like a Chenin Blanc, but a fresh style in a warm vintage. It is long on the palate with mineral persistence.”

“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Scarrone is dense, plush and explosive. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, spice, rose petal and a kick of French oak all build in the glass. Potent and quite deep, the Scarrone is another lights-out Barbera from Vietti. In recent years, the Scarrone has come along very well. Then again, these vines were planted in 1989, so they are no longer ‘young’, just younger than the Vigna Vecchia, where the oldest vines date to 1918.”

“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Tre Vigne is a fabulous, explosive wine. Sumptuous dark cherry, ripe plum, mocha, licorice and new leather are all dialed up to the maximum. This racy, deep Barbera is tremendous. For its quality-to-price ratio, the Alba Tre Vigne might be the wine of the year at Vietti.”
James Suckling 92 points “Notes of ripe plums and blackberries with dark spicy chocolate, moist bark and wet asphalt. Juicy and racy on the palate with medium to full body and vivid acidity. Tense with dusty tannins and a seamless, lengthy finish.”

“Floral aromas, with crisp notes of sweet spice. On the palate, giving plums and dark berries, with intensity and freshness. Firm tannins. There is something honest and straightforward about this wine. Lovely. (Drink between 2024-2038)”
Winery Notes “Purplish-red colour with subtle violet hues. Blackberry and raspberry aromas. Notes of minerals and blueberry. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins, moderate acidity and good balance.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 90 points
“The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is an especially nervy edition of the Perbacco, the result of a significant presence of Monforte fruit in the blend. Notes of red fruit, orange peel and white pepper sculpt the 2021, finishing with notable tension. (Drink between 2023-2029)”
Winery Notes “Fruity with hints of mint, spices and raspberry. Round, elegant tannins add to a long, refined finish. Robust, intense, powerful in youth; complex, elegant with ageing.”

Wine Spectator 96 points
“A rich, round profile carries maturing aromas and flavors of cherry, plum, rose and sweet spices, with grace notes of wild herbs and autumn woods. This is impeccably balanced, with refined, resonant tannins and a lingering aftertaste that echoes ripe fruit and vanilla, adding a mineral element. Complex and approachable now with decanting. Best from 2025 through 2042.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points ” Here’s an exciting new submission from Vietti that takes us to a whole other level (and evolutionary timeframe). A very late release that is held back at the winery, the 2015 Barolo Riserva sources its fruit solely from Castiglione Falletto. In fact, it represents a special section of the best sites that go into the Barolo Castiglione. Some of that fruit was so impressive, I am told, the decision was made to age it longer (with up to 30 months in large oak casks) and give it a Riserva designation. Specifically, the grapes come primarily from Scarrone and Bric del Fiasc. Production is 5,000 bottles. The wine reveals gorgeous elegance, with evolved fruit flavors and melting tannins. The beauty is that you can drink this wine the same day you buy it.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Sourced from an average of 54-year-old vines in Brunate of La Morra, the 2017 Barolo Brunate was aged for 32 months in large oak cask and barriques. It offers brooding aromas of licorice, dried currant, and cedar. Congruent on the palate with mineral-rich turned earth, there is a firmly built structure with balance. Drink 2024-2050.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, brooding wine. Huge dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol and dried herbs all build in a potent Barolo that is enshrouded by tannins. The 2017 is going to need quite a bit of time in the cellar. Today, it is very much a brooding powerhouse. Dark wild cherry, licorice, tar, menthol and spice take shape in the glass, but the 2017 is clearly an infant, and an unruly one at that.”

“From the southwest facing amphitheater of Lazzarito in Serralunga d’Alba the 2017 Barolo Lazzarito was aged for 30 months in a combination of large oak casks and barrique. The nose is layered with elegant spice and floral notes of cedar, red plum, and brushed leather. There is incredible balance within its structure, which has deceptive ease for early drinking. Hold 3-5 years or drink 2023-2046.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “Vietti’s 2017 Barolo Lazzarito is absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the challenges of the growing season, they appear to have been no problem here. More than anything else, the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and stature. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cured meat, spice and rose petal open gradually with time in the glass. I would not be in a rush to open bottles anytime soon. The Lazzarito has been one of the most improved wines at Vietti for a number of years. The 2017 is so captivating.”

Jeb Dunnuck 98 points
“Located in Novello, from three hectares of the Ravera MGA with southwest exposure, the 2017 Barolo Ravera was aged for 32 months in large oak casks. It is forward and expressive with fresh pine, candied cranberry, orange oil, and aniseed. The palate is full of energetic tension, balance, and purity, with apricot pit, tea leaf and saline minerality. An inspiring wine to close out the Vietti 2017 lineup. Drink 2025-2050.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine.”

“I was not at all surprised to see such a tremendous showing from Vietti because I had already tasted the 2018s from cask two years ago, pre-pandemic. The 2018 Barolos are absolutely beautiful. There is not much more to say than that…” — Antonio Galloni, February 2022

Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2018 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is a captivating, layered wine full of character. Effusive aromatics make a strong opening impression. Rose petal, lavender, sage, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this vibrant, focused Barbaresco. The 2018 is charming and nuanced from start to finish. This is the first vintage from a parcel that previously belonged to Socré. It’s an impressive debut, to say the least. All this nervy Barbaresco needs is time.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “This wine shows its MGA name ‘Roncaglie’ on the front label for the first time. That’s because Vietti recently acquired additional land in this cru site. The total holdings now span two hectares of vines. The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is made as if it were a Barolo (instead of a Barbaresco) and is released one year after its peers. It shows tart fruit and dried cranberry with some mild spice and tarry smoke from two years in large oak casks. Exactly 5,026 bottles were made.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti’s secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. A production of 4,493 bottles, the wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a deep, layered wine that is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the Brunate is quite primary and backward, but all the ingredients are there. Sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and spice build with a bit of coaxing.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit give the Cerequio its effusive personality. Nuanced and deep, with tremendous complexity and tons of character, the Cerequio is dazzling. This is everything a great Barolo from Cerequio should be. In other words: textbook. More over, it’s one of the best wines of this very uneven vintage.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “Here’s an exciting new submission from Vietti. The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations.”

Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points
“The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine’s texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind.”

“Vietti’s 2019s are off the charts… From the first wine to the last, the 2019s possess tremendous depth and purity, along with the deep inflections of site that are what Barolo is all about. Readers who can find these wines should not hesitate, as they are truly magnificent.” — Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Vietti Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $58.50, that’s $55.58 at 5% off and $52.65 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 Castiglione Falletto needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a worthy follow up to the stellar 2018. Aromatic and deeply pitched, the 2019 races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Crushed rted berry fruit, rose petal, mint, and cinnamon all open in the glass, but it is the wine’s silkiness and suppleness that impresses most. A kick of acids and tannins puts an exclamation point on the finish. This is a gorgeous Cerequio that takes all the finesse this site offers, and then turns up the volume. What a wine.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points “Vietti was able to buy a 9,000-square meter piece of Cerequio from Michele Chiarlo, arguably the king of this celebrated cru. And because this is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still learning the ropes. For example, there is a fresh minty tone that pops up from the bouquet of the 2019 Barolo Cerequio. “That minty note was a mystery to us,” Luca Currado tells me. “But then we understood that its part of Cerequio.” This wine shows a firm grip on the palate that does extend out to include some textural softness, but it ultimately remains quite structured. Among the grand cru sites of La Morra, Luca Currado tells me that “Cerequio is the brother and Brunate is the sister.” His wife Elena Penna adds, “We’ve never had two sites so close to one another show such a great difference between them.”

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $239, that’s $227.05 at 5% off and $215.10 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points
“With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is a historic cornerstone wine of this mighty portfolio. It is also one of the Vietti Barolos that consistently delivers extreme quality and pleasure with each new release. Like the other wines presented here, winemaking is straightforward, with submerged cap fermentations lasting 30 to 35 days (although those times were reduced in 2019 because this vintage was not suited to long maceration times). Serralunga d’Alba always delivers power and richness. There are aromas of dried tobacco leaf, perfumed tea, crushed rose and iron ore. The bouquet is extremely expressive.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is all class. Deep and sensual, the 2019 once again shows how magical this site is. A Barolo with no hard edges and tons of sensuality, the 2019 is positively stellar. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red-toned fruit. The purity of the flavors is remarkable. Sweet floral and spice notes lend tons of lift as the Rocche gains in dimension with time in the glass. Resonant, expansive and sensual to the core, the Rocche will thrill Vietti fans.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 99 points “For lovers of timeless Nebbiolo, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione hits all its marks. Yes, Vietti makes beautiful Barolo from some of the best cru sites from across the appellation, but I confess a preference for this outstanding wine. Rocche di Castiglione has the home team advantage with vines located not too far from the winery that is nestled into the outer stone wall and urban fabric of the Castiglione Falletto village. This site is characterized by freshness, extreme precision (that always stands out), linearity, structure and balanced freshness. This naturally concentrated vintage also shows a juicy or succulent quality that is outstanding. Pretty mineral notes add to the balance and elegance. The vineyard site measures about one hectare. Rocche di Castiglione is an oddly shaped and elongated MGA with singular southeast exposures along a steep ravine, with Bussia to the west and Perno to the east.”

Cornas 3-20-24

On Sale Now

Among the excellent villages producing Syrah wines in the Northern Rhone, Cornas provides the goldilocks of reds: not as rustic as Crozes, not as polished as Hermitage, and not as elegant as Côte Rôtie, but instead a glorious middle-ground between all three.

Here we find one of our favorite Syrah producers: Domaine Durand. The brothers Eric and Joël craft wines in a sweet spot, combining elegance, drinkability, and age-worthiness. Delivering ripe fruit, savory minerality and lifted aromatics, the meticulous work by these brothers is evident from first pour. Never hyper glossy or overly rustic, these epitomize Cornas in all the ways we love.

The estate owns select parcels throughout Cornas. The plots are steeply terraced and worked exclusively by hand. The parcels are composed of mostly old-vines that thrive even in ripe vintages, such as the recent trio of 2018, 2019, and 2020.

From Cornas, the brothers produce three wines from just shy of 24 acres: the Prémices, Empreintes, and Confidence. Prémices is sourced from the youngest vines that produce velvety wines full of fruits and spices. Empreintes is a bottling of plots with granite soils from throughout Cornas. The wines offer powerful aromatics and a tightly tannic core. Worthy of a hearty decant, these wines will cellar well for over a decade. The top bottling on offer is the Confidence, crafted from vines at least thirty-years-old. This is the most complex and concentrated of wines, offering up dark fruit, spice, and mineral aromatics. Powerful, this wine could cellar for quite some time but is rewarding in its youth with grippy tannins that beg to be paired with winter braises and fatty meats.

We’ve adored this estate and stocked up on their wines over several vintages because we know you’ll love them, too. So, stock up during our sale and enjoy the wines for years to come.

Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“The 2016 Cornas Les Eygats is the gem in 2016 and has a fresh, focused, backward style that carries notes of crème de cassis, spring flowers, pepper, and crushed rocks. With full-bodied richness, good acidity, and impeccable balance, it’s a brilliant wine, but it’s going to need 2-3 years of bottle age to show its full potential.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points “Brilliant magenta. Powerful, mineral-accented boysenberry, cherry preserve, violet and olive aromas are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Palate-staining dark berry, licorice and bitter chocolate flavors pick up notes of candied flowers, vanilla and smoky minerals on the back half. Powerful but surprisingly lithe in style, finishing extremely long, with sharp delineation and gently gripping tannins that emerge slowly.”

“A core of juicy red currant and bitter plum pāte de fruit flavors is brought into nice focus by a racy, chalk-edged structure and an iron spine, while subtle savory and dark olive accents dart in the background. Best from 2022 through 2034. 1,083 cases made, 60 cases imported. –JM”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92-94 points “Powerful, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of ripe black/blue fruits, candied flowers, olive and allspice. Supple and energetic on the palate, offering bitter cherry, blueberry and fruitcake flavors that tighten up slowly with air and show fine delineation. The cherry note drives a long, spicy finish that’s given shape by fine-grained, even tannins. There’s a quite graceful quality here that defies the old stereotype of Cornas being necessarily rustic.”
Decanter 92 points “Intense on the nose, a touch of char and cola. Very full-bodied, but there is some inner freshness and acidity. Tannins are plentiful, very ripe. It’s very bold and modern, very ripe. Good for the vintage. Drinking Window 2022 – 2029.”

It has tons of minerality on the palate and is full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, with enough tannins to warrant a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. It’s a beautiful, classic, impeccably made Cornas that will have two decades of longevity.”
Vinous 94-96 points “Suave, mineral-accented blackberry, cassis, cherry compote and exotic spice qualities on the intensely perfumed nose, along with a slowly emerging floral nuance. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, displaying powerful lift to the concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with pronounced mineral thrust, a hint of smoky bacon and gently chewy, well-knit tannins.”

Rosenthal Wine note
“Cornas: This is the grand wine of this tiny domaine. The vines are situation on the higher slopes of the Chaillot vineyard. The “terroir” is more complex here with a mixture of soil types and expositions. There are terraces of pure granite that are oriented east – southeast; then, these are supplemented by terraces that sit on a clay-limestone base that have a full southern exposure. The grapes are never destemmed, the cuvaison is long (30 days) and the elevage is in demi-muids for eighteen months. As with the other wines of the domaine, this wine is neither fined nor filtered.”

“One of my favorite estates in Cornas (although the domaine is in Châteaubourg), Domaine Durand is run with incredible talent and passion by Eric and Joël Durand… These are terrific wines that offer pleasure in their youth yet also age gracefully… The brothers took over the estate in 1991, and while the winemaking is relatively modern, these are classic, pure, beautifully made wines that speak clearly to their region and terroir.” – Jeb Dunnuck

Domaine Eric et Joel Durand Cornas Confidence 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 34 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“One of my favorite Cornas, the 2018 Cornas Confidence comes from pure granite soils and was partially destemmed and brought up in 30% new French oak. The 2018 is a head-turner, revealing a dense purple color as well as sensational notes of crème de cassis, smoked bacon, graphite, bouquet garni, and liquid rock-like minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and opulent, with sweet tannins, this is one sexy Cornas that’s going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for 10-15 years in cold cellars.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94 points “From the family’s mature vines (average of 30 years old) on granitic sites, the 2018 Cornas Confidence matured in 30% new oak, yet that has been “soaked up” by the wine to the point that nearly no cedar notes are discernible. Instead, there are scents of crushed stone, dark plum and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it’s concentrated and tannic but not unapproachable, with a silky, lingering finish and a sprinkling of ground pepper and aniseed.”

Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“Lastly, the 2019 Cornas Confidence is all Syrah that was 70% destemmed and spent 18 months in 30% new barrels. A classic wine from this estate, it brings tons of richness and depth in a pure, clean, quasi-modern style while still being pure Cornas to the core. Dark fruits, ground pepper, game, violets, and spice all give way to a full-bodied, wonderfully textured, balanced 2019 with the texture and balance to offer pleasure today yet also evolve for two decades.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2019 Cornas Confidence shows a bit of toasty oak up front (30% new wood is standard for this cuvée), then develops notes of crushed stone, red plums, mint, violets, cassis and raspberry sherbet. Full-bodied, velvety and long, it’s an intense, complex thrill ride of Cornas that just needs several years in the cellar. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Rich and juicy, particularly for Cornas, with waves of red currant and blackberry compote rolling through. There’s more defining chalk, savory and olive accents on the back end and a singed alder frame around it all. Needs a bit of time to finish knitting together, but this is very, very solid. Best from 2023 through 2036. 150 cases made, 50 cases imported. — JM”

Wine Spectator 95 points
“Ripe and focused, with mouthwatering acidity driving the core of steeped red currant, raspberry and blackberry fruit along. A bright iron note zings through the finish, pulling in light anise, savory and sanguine hints. Best from 2020 through 2035.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Deep purple-colored, the 2016 Cornas Empreintes is a smoking good effort. Blackberries, plums, cured meats, pepper, and earthy notes all flow from this rounded, sexy, powerful Cornas that has beautiful mid-palate depth and density as well as a great finish. Drink this smoking good 2016 any time over the coming decade.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2016 Cornas Empreintes features hints of cedar, brown sugar and dried spices layered over its plummy fruit (it was aged in 20% new oak, with the bulk in older wood). Full-bodied, supple and ripe, it’s charming but with more stuffing than that word suggests, showing ample concentration and soft, dusty tannins on the long finish. It’s a terrific Cornas to drink over the next 10-12 years.”-JC

“One of the flagship releases is the 2017 Cornas Empreintes, which comes from the steep, granite hillsides of Cornas, sees 25% stems, and is brought up in 20% new French oak. This full-bodied, concentrated effort boasts a deep purple hue, notes of peppery herbs, plums, blackberries, and smoked game, building tannins, and just about overflowing amounts of character. It’s a stunning, brilliant Cornas that’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15+ years. Bravo!”

“The 2018 Cornas Empreintes offers a riper, more concentrated style, delivering lots of plum and darker currant fruits intermixed with notions of smoked herbs, ground pepper, violets, lavender, and spice box. It’s rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, yet the tannins here are more present, and it has a closed, angular style that’s going to benefit from bottle age. Give bottles 3-4 years at a minimum and it should have a solid decade of longevity after that.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92-94 points “Nearly as good as the Confidence, the Durands’ 2018 Cornas Empreintes is more open and approachable, with sexy blueberry, blackberry and vanilla nuances. It’s full-bodied, creamy and plush, with a long, vibrant finish.”

“More density and depth, as well as precision, emerge from the 2020 Cornas Empreintes, a smaller production cuvée from 30-year-old vines. Its deep purple hue is followed by a beautiful perfume of black and blue fruits, bloody meat, pepper, and spring flowers. I love its focus and length on the palate, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with plenty of tannins, a great mid-palate, and a salty, bloody finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s a “wow” Cornas for sure.”

“This is packed with dark fig and blackberry paste flavors that roll through slowly but steadily, unveiling extra dark olive, sweet bay leaf, singed alder and juniper accents along the way. There’s buried minerality that should rise to prominence with cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2035. 900 cases made, 140 cases imported. –JM”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “The base cuvée from this estate, the 2019 Cornas Prémices is all Syrah that was 80% destemmed. Up-front plum, blackberry, and blueberry fruits, graphite, and peppery herbs all emerge from the glass, and this medium to full-bodied beauty offers a wealth of fruit, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s a perfect introduction to the wines of this high-quality estate.”

“Juicy and youthfully compact, with a core of red and black currant fruit that will need a little time to unfurl. Boasts a backdrop of dried anise and sweet tapenade, along with a refined iron note and a nicely poised finish. Best from 2024 through 2034. 900 cases made, 140 cases imported.”

Willi and Fritz Haag 3-19-24

On Sale Now

The Haag family has called the town of Brauneberg in the Middle Mosel region of Germany home for over 500 years. Needless to say, there’s quite a few in the area and more than one involved in winemaking.

Our sale focuses on two such estate, both members of the VDP: Fritz Haag and Willi Haag. Fritz is one of the most highly regarded producers in the region, on par with JJ Prum and Willi Schaefer. Oliver Haag runs the estate, having taken over in 2005 after working for such luminaries as Donnhoff and Karthauserhof. His wines are some of the most difficult to find given the high local demand. We’re pleased as punch to offer what little makes it stateside, including the incredibly rare TBA (a hypercar of a wine).

The Willi Haag branch, the less famous of the two Haag wineries, makes excellent Mosel wines in styles ranging from dry to slightly off-dry to fruity, and all are remarkably well-priced. The grandson of the estate’s founder, Marcus Haag, has run the winery for nearly 30 years from his celebrated holdings of steeply planted vineyards in the village of Brauneberg. Here, one finds a range of soil types, including blue Devonian slate and the brown slate for which the village is famous. What the wines may lack in seriousness versus those from Fritz, they easily make up for in terms of affordability and joyful hedonism.

In Stock and On Sale Now from Fritz and Willi Haag:

“Oliver Haag has made an absolutely brilliant set of wines in 2018 and this may well be the single finest vintage collection of young wines I have ever tasted from this iconic estate in Brauneberg. It is a flat out brilliant vintage for Weingut Fritz Haag; these are amongst Germany’s very greatest examples of the 2018 vintage” –John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 25 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 95+ points
“The 2018 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese is one of my absolutely favorite wines in the cellar this year, as again, there is no botrytis here and the wine is a legend in the making. The brilliant bouquet soars from the glass in a blaze of lime, pear, violets, a hint of the yellow plum to come, salty soil tones, honeycomb and a vibrant topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, refined and fullish in profile, with a creamy core of fruit, excellent acidity and grip and a very long, very precise and beautifully mineral-driven finish. This is stunning juice! 2025-2075+.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Expressive, showing great tension between the candied berry and citrus flavors, accented by a vibrant structure and embedded minerality. Impressive, but the intensity is almost too strong at the moment. Needs time to unwind, but the elements and complexity seem to be packed and ready to emerge. Best from 2023 through 2040.”

John Gilman 96 points
“The 2018 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Goldkapsel Auslese is even a hair better this year, as it shows just a touch more exotic creaminess on the attack, simply stunning backend mineral drive and great acids for the vintage. The bouquet is celestial in its blend of lime, mirabelle, pear, a lovely foundation of slate, honeycomb, just a whisper of mossiness and notes of lilacs and violets in the upper register. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure, focused and impeccably balanced, with superb acids and grip, laser-like focus and a very, very long and complex finish. This wine just dances across the palate. 2026-2085.”

“The 2018 Juffer TBA is just a bit higher in residual sugar than the Beerenauslese this year, as Oliver estimates that it is around one hundred and eighty grams per liter. This too is a gorgeous wine in the making, offering up refined bouquet of mirabelle, honey, white cherries, candied violets, citrus zest and a nice touch of saltiness from the slate. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, creamy and very long and complex, with excellent focus and grip, sound acids and a very long, pure and zesty finish. Utterly captivating and borderline criminal to spit. 2019-2100.”

“Ripe, luminous yellow peach and grapefruit flavors are showered in a crystalline haze of struck stone and clay in this piercing off-dry Riesling. Slim in body yet concentrated and finely chiseled, it’s an expansive, exceptionally penetrating sip with a luscious, nectar-like cling on the finish. Delicious young but should gain mineral complexities through 2030 and hold longer still.”

“Penetrating scents of lemon and grapefruit laced with woodruff and wintergreen usher in a palate unusually citric and coolingly herbal when compared with the Willi Haag 2016s from Brauneberg or Veldenz. But given that midpalate citricity, I’m surprised at a finish that proves rather sedate and only modest in length. Still, it offers admirable refreshment and a hint of counterpoint by way of stony impingement. Last year’s more exciting inaugural bottling from this famous site was also a Kabinett. Hopefully we’ll soon get to experience a Willi Haag Goldtröpfchen Spätlese.” – David Schildknecht-Vinous

“This wine’s unassuming nose belies the thrilling depth of juicy, sweet white peach, tangerine and quince flavors that burst on the palate. Luminous fruit and spine tingling acidity collide, hinged by a kick of phenolic bitterness that lingers on the finish.”

“Picked from October 17 to 19, this bottling reflects the characteristic ripeness of Juffer-Sonnenuhr as well as relatively early noble rot. Muskmelon, peach and mango are laced with rowan and almond extract on an impressively heady nose. The extremely ripe fruits reconvene on a sumptuously creamy, glycerol-rich palate, with peach kernel piquancy adding welcome counterpoint and pushback to the wine’s prominent sweetness. While lusciously long, this finishes less brightly than the corresponding Juffer and without its mineral savor.”
