Kelley Fox

Winery Notes “The Mirabai 2023 is medium-dark, deep youthful red with blue undertones and brilliant transparency. The nose is a heady mix of minerals, subtle spices, ripe strawberries, and other dark red berries and cherries. The mouth is juicy and classic Dundee Hills silky with forever strawberries that end in a long finish. This Mirabai has depth, richness and power without any heaviness. It’s full of movement.”
Staff Pick!  Kelley Fox Mirabai Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA  2023 750ml $36.50 special, 36 bottles available
(Not reviewed yet, 2022 vintage provided for reference)
Jeb Dunnuck (2022) “Vibrant and lifted with poppy fruit, the 2022 Pinot Noir Mirabai is a brilliant ruby hue, with fresh, lifted aromas of wild red cranberry, white pepper, and fresh tangerine. Open and approachable, with medium body and soft elegant fruit as well as a supple texture and fresh acidity, it’s even-keeled and has a hint of spice on the finish. I love this wine for youthful fresh drinking.”

Dom Perignon

“Yet another scintillating wine from Dom Perignon” -Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
Dom Perignon Brut, Champagne, France 2013 750ml $299 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 98 Points “A driven and serious DP with aromas of chalk, biscuits, apricot stones and lemons. Some spice and dried flowers, too. So sleek and sophisticated. Elegant. Yet, it’s long and powerful, with a sharp minerality. Tight and precise. Reminds me of bottles from the 1980s, such as 1988. It really takes off. Disgorged October 2021. Drinkable on release in January 2023, but better in a couple of years.”
Decanter 96 Points “Silky, narrowly sculpted and serene, Dom Pérignon 2013 is a less hedonistic release than the 2012 (and less intensely energetic than the 2008), but showcases a beautiful mid-place between tension and expressiveness already. Orange-coloured fruit – apricots, mango and orange – play along with snappy lemon syrup and delicate red fruits, the palate teased into considerable detail and length with some trademark Dom Pérignon smokiness. There is immediate pleasure here, although cellaring will let some of the inner complexity unfurl, revealing this to the among the finest Dom Pérignon releases of recent times. 51% Pinot Noir, 49% Chardonnay. Drinking Window: 2026-2045.”

KRUG

It takes a long time to make just one bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee — each release combines over 120 different barrel aged wines from the very finest vineyards in champagne including Ambonnay, Aÿ, Le Mesnil and Trépail. Although each release will be centered on a single vintage (2015 in this case) the wines in the assemblage will contain up to 10 to 15 different years of age at the time of blending. From there an additional 6 years of cellar is required before release. Thus an average bottle of Krug takes twenty years from vineyard to bottle.

Krug Grande Cuvee 171eme Edition Brut, Champagne, France 750ml $279 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 99 Points “The tightness and tension of this is impressive considering the youngest wine from this is 2015 (hot and dry year), with some wines going back to 2000. Ginger and orange zest. Some creme brulee. It’s medium-bodied with apple, pie crust and floral character. It’s salty and zesty yet, at the same time, complex and gorgeous. Chamomile and other floral teas highlight everything. Turns rich and flavorful at the finish. Terrific release. Really takes off at the end. Drink or hold.’
Wine Enthusiast 97 Points “Deliciously balanced, this Champagne is impressive. The iconic wine is in its 171st blend, meaning it combines vintages for the best result for each bottling, not a specific vintage. The 171st essence is dry, while also having fine textured fruit. This is a magnificent wine and worth aging for another year. “

Aurelien Suenen

Suenen Oiry Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, Champagne, France NV (2020) 750ml $89 special, 18 bottles available
Suenen Oiry Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, Champagne, France NV (2020) 1.5L $199 special, 1 bottle available
Importer’ Notes “A single Cru bottlings from Oiry located next to Cramant, originally the fruit from this site was blended along with the fruit that goes into Aurélien’s C+C bottling to produce a straight Blanc de Blancs. The single cru bottlings reflect Aurélien’s terroir driven focus of highlighting the uniqueness between all his plots.”

Andre Clouet

Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $39 special, 36 bottles available
Decanter 92 Points “[Reviewed 2021] Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish. Drinking Window 2021 – 2026.”

Marie Courtin

Marie Courtin Amphora Blanc des Blanc Extra Brut Amphora, Champagne, France 2020 750ml $149 special, 6 bottles available
Importer Notes “After years of fermentations in tank, foudre and barrel, Dominique Moreau has ventured into the foray of amphora vinification and ageing. The Blanc de Blancs is a unique blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Arbanne, all grown in the kimmeridgian-centric soils of Polisot. The resulting wine is textured, bursting with energy and goes down easy.”

Brick House

Brick House Vineyards Gamay Noir, Ribbon Ridge, USA 2023 750ml $36 special, 12 bottles available
Doug Tunnell-Winemaker “From the same vines that produced a gold medal in competition with our colleagues in Beaujolais, the Due East bottling returns with the 2023 vintage. Ruby-hued and redolent of both red and black fruit flavors, this is classic Oregon Gamay, luscious, ripe and with a backbone of natural acidity that pairs this wine perfectly with almost any dish.”

Brick House Vineyards Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge, USA 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles available
(Not reviewed yet, 2022 vintage provided for reference)
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 Points “The 2022 Pinot Noir Select is wonderfully perfumed with spice-tinged red berries, cloves and dusty flowers. This is juicy and energetic on the palate, with raspberry and cherry depths slowly saturating the senses. This finishes long and sapid with fine tannins framing exotic spices and inner florals, all enlivened by a bump of residual acidity.”

Westrey

Westrey Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $38 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 90 Points “A tour de force of fruit begins with aromas of raspberry fruit leather and dried red apples. The palate features a bowl of mixed red berries that is accompanied by flavors of brown spices and saline. The wine’s crisp, lemony acidity is matched by firm tannins.”

France

Domaine Marc Colin

Domaine Marc Colin is a star of the Santenay. Although Marc no longer works the fields, having passed the Domaine on to his children, the fruits of his labor can still be felt in these wines. Reds that are delicate but never brittle, whites that are crisp but never tart, the Domaine’s wines have perfected a skillful balancing act, while still maintaining excellent value.

Domaine Marc Colin et Fils En Montceau, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, France 2022 750ml $89 special, 18 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Montceau is also a real success, mingling aromas of pear, orange oil and lemon with notions of freshly baked bread and white flowers in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it’s deep and racy, with good concentration and a long, penetrating finish.”

Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Les Combes, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, France 2022 750ml $79 special, 6 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 91-93 Points “The 2022 Saint-Aubin Les Combes 1er Cru has a wonderful nose of flecks of white peach and dried apricot marrying effortlessly with the citrus fruit. Like Colin’s other cuvées, there is real vibrancy and energy here. The palate is very well-balanced with a keen thread of acidity and hints of bitter lemon and orange rind; perhaps spicier than the Les Creots by comparison. Excellent.”

Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Les Castets, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, France 2022 750ml $79 special, 18 bottles available
Jasper Morris-Inside Burgundy  89-91 Points “A limestone which breaks down easily, with chardonnay vines replacing pinot noir after 2005. South facing, late to start in the spring, but early to be picked. The nose has no particular character, just an agreeable white fruit, continued on the palate, fairly balanced with acidity, medium plus length.”

Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicily, Italy 2022 750ml $49 special, 22 bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 92+ Points “The 2022 Il Frappato is an understated beauty. Blackberries and currants swirl up from the glass, accentuated by hints of incense and rubbed sage. This splashes across the palate, soft-textured and pliant, with crisp red and black fruits that flow across a core of tactile minerals and savory spice. A bump of zesty acidity maintains amazing freshness even as a tart wild berry tinge pinches at the cheeks through the long and tension-filled finale. I’d rather enjoy the 2022 alongside a meal than on its own, but I have a feeling that was Arianna Occhipinti’s intention.

Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia Rosso IGT, Sicily, Italy 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 22 bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 Points “The 2023 Rosso SP68 is pretty and perfumed, with a blend of crushed roses and violets accentuating blackberries, white smoke and wet stones. It washes across the palate with a liquid floral concentration and tart wild berry fruits, all guided by a core of brisk acidity. The 2023 leaves the mouth salivating as a tart cranberry crunchiness resonates and hints of blood orange slowly fade.”

Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Bianco Sicilia IGT, Sicily, Italy 2023 750ml $30.90 special, 12 bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 90 Points “The 2023 Bianco SP68 is distinctly savory, as wild herbs and wet concrete give way to crushed nectarines. This is soothingly round and supple with a spicy tinge of ginger up front, leading to tart orchard fruits and a cascade of salty minerals. The 2023 finishes vividly fresh yet still potent, leaving hints of green melon and lime zest that linger on and on. Allow the Bianco SP68 some time to open in the bottle to express its aromatics properly.”

Terre Nere

Terre Nere Etna Rosso, Sicily, Italy 2022 750ml $24 special, 36+ bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 92+ Points “Incredibly spicy, the 2022 Etna Rosso bursts from the glass with a wild bouquet of cloves and incense, giving way to dried cherries and sage. This is silky-smooth, with cooling acidity lifting its dense core of ripe red berry fruits as crunchy mineral tones resonate throughout. The 2022 finishes impossibly long and staining yet only gently tannic, leaving a lovely air of lavender and cloves that echoes on. Terre Nere continues to raise the bar with their Etna Rosso; it now has its own barrel-aging facility, which has allowed them to keep the wine in barrel between 14 to 16 months.”

Terre Nere Etna Bianco, Sicily, Italy 2023 750ml $26 special, 36+ bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 92 Points “Honeyed florals, candied ginger, hints of fennel and crushed green apples form a spicy and inviting bouquet as the 2023 Etna Bianco opens in the glass. This plays depths of ripe orchard fruit against a core of salty minerals and savory spices as a wave of stimulating acidity completely resets the palate. The 2023 tapers off perfumed and long, leaving a pleasantly sour tinge of citrus that puckers the cheeks.”

Pegaso Zeta and the wines of Telmo Rodriguez

“Telmo Rodriguez, one of the most iconic and best winemakers of his generation…. has accomplished himself as a champion of terroir over varietal and employs artisan craftsmanship in the cellar…” -Kerry Winslow, Grapelive

After his important work in the “Terroir Manifesto” that demanded a move towards classifying Spain’s appellations based on Vineyard quality, after bringing his father’s Remelluri winery in Rioja to new heights of purity and excellence, what else was one of the Spanish wine industry’s enfants terribles to do but start a new winery?

Telmo Rodriguez’s winery, Pegaso, began as all wineries in Sierra de Gredos seem to: with a long hike. Decades ago, he and his father were crossing the iconic mountain range and young Telmo was so enamored by the peaceful and simple beauty of the land that he vowed to make wine there some day. In 1999, he did just that, purchasing vineyard land in Cebreros, an old village outside of Avila. Finally a chance to make something all his own.

Pegaso releases wines based on the two soil types in his vineyards: Pizarra (brown slate) and Granito (granite). Zeta, his newest wine, is a blend from both slate and granite soils and an excellent introduction to Telmo’s style. Featuring 60 year old vines then spontaneously fermented and aged in a combo of neutral oak, stainless steel, and amphorae, then fined with egg whites, this is a complex and vivacious wine with a unique sense of place.

Telmo Rodriguez ‘Pegaso Zeta’ Sierra de Gredos, Cebreros, Spain 2020 750ml $26.50 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 Points “The 2020 Pegaso Zeta was produced with old-vine Garnacha on granite and schist soils from a healthy vintage that was picked early, starting the 27th of August … It’s a very harmonious vintage, expressive with bright red fruit and an herbal touch. The palate is seamless, rich but fresh, with pungent flavors and abundant, fine-grained tannins.”

…also available from Telmo Rodriguez:

Telmo Rodriguez ‘Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon, Spain 2013 750ml $33 special, 2 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “Exuberant red berries and cherries with a fine, rose-like edge and some coal smoke. Very juicy, fleshy, rich and ripe mid-palate with a dense, long and showy, glossy black-cherry finish. Drink or hold.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94 Points “Cropped from a cooler and late ripening vintage, the 2013 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra resulted in fresh wines and certainly worked well with the slate soils of these old Garnacha vines in Cebreros. This has a very good balance between ripeness and freshness, power and elegance, with the character of the soils slowly coming through in the shape of fresh meat and beef blood, with the iron-like notes still pretty shy. This should develop nicely in bottle.”

Telmo Rodriguez ‘Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon, Spain 2018 750ml $69 special, 8 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 2018 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra was produced with Garnacha from 80+-year-old vines on slopes rich in schist. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats and amphorae with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels for 24 months. Against all odds, because the wines from schist tend to be more closed than the ones from granite, the wine is super expressive and open, aromatic, floral and perfumed. It’s powerful and elegant, with structure and freshness, with balance and all the ingredients for a great development in bottle. This has to be the finest vintage of this wine since the initial 1999.”

Telmo Rodriguez ‘Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon, Spain 2019 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 2019 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra comes from a very dry year with low yields, produced with Garnacha from 80+-year-old vines on slopes rich in schist at 800 to 1,000 meters in altitude. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats and amphorae with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 600-liter oak barrels of different origins for 24 months. This is very expressive; the slate soils seem to take heat quite well. It is floral and open, rich and with the grainy tannins that reminded me of the dusty schist.”

Giacomo Conterno
Aldo Conterno
Conterno Fantino

The Conterno name is beloved in Barolo. There are six producers that share it, with varying degrees of relation. Today, we’re featuring three that best represent a spectrum of traditional to modern-leaning while sharing a dedication to quality. Explore what makes each so special and combine to maximize your savings!

Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno wines are highly limited but well worth the hunt. These are among the top tier of wines being produced in all of Italy. The wines are always powerful and traditional, but with an elegance and grace that seems to transcend the immediate impact of flavor and leave you searching for descriptors to capture what you’ve tasted.  We love the wines and if you are thinking about trying them—during our three-day sale is your perfect opportunity.

The way these wines have become collectable, it’s going to be ever more difficult to source them.

Aldo Conterno

Son of the famous Giacomo Conterno, Aldo purchased his own estate, Favot, in 1969 to explore alternatives to the strictly traditional methods of the family estate. He took inspiration from Angelo Gaja and from his experiences while traveling in the United States.

Although he introduced some modern winemaking techniques that improved the quality of the wines, including temperature-controlled fermentation, he never fully embraced the “modern” heavily oak-influenced style. He eschewed new oak on the Barolos and continued to hand-harvest the grapes, using gentle pressing and shorter macerations in the cellar.

The results were polished and elegant wines with pure and bold fruit profiles. Since his passing in 2012, his three sons have run the estate. These are standard bearer wines for the region, and worthy of a dedicated spot in your cellar.

Conterno Fantino

Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino founded this winery in 1982, which is now located in Monforte d’Alba. The winery works exclusively with estate-grown fruit from 26 hectares of vines, which is personally cultivated by family members. Fruit is carefully hand-selected into small crates to preserve the fragile aromatics before undergoing spontaneous fermentation. The estate employs French barriques, new wood, and limited additions of sulfur to craft opulent and polished wines. They’ve been certified organic since 2014. You won’t find an entry-level Barolo here. Instead, the winery crafts its Langhe Nebbiolo as a calling-card (without the eye-watering price of others that take their Langhe wines seriously).

“I was so impressed with these 2017 Barolos from Conterno-Fantino. Quite simply, these are some of the most convincing wines of the year. Moreover, the overall level is pretty much on par with 2016, which is remarkable and points to the level of seriousness found at this reference point estate perched in the hills outside the Monforte town center.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Conterno bottles in stock @ VinopolisPoderi Aldo Conterno Colonnello, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Was $179, Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2017 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows good focus, structure and a sharper character that is often the distinguishing factor in this wine. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit and plum, but it also shows a solid framing of iron ore and dark stony mineral. These give the wine greater lift and contoured edges. This is not the first time that Colonnello is my favorite wine in this lineup, and I suspect it won’t be the last.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Offering plum, cherry, iron, eucalyptus and black pepper aromas and flavors, this broad red has absorbed the oak treatment pretty well already, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and long, ending with elements of mineral and spice. Best from 2025 through 2043. —B.S.”

Poderi Aldo Conterno Granbussia, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2012 750ml Was $889, Displayed Price: $789, that’s $749.55 at 5% off and $710.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“The earthy, woodsy aromas show some evolution in this red, with just a hint of white truffle, yet there’s still a hefty dose of spicy oak to be resolved. Rich and sumptuous midpalate, showing plum, cherry, tar and tobacco flavors shaded by vanilla and toasty spices, with firm, dusty tannins laying a grip on the long finish. Give this another year or two in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2042. From Italy. —B.S.”

Conterno Fantino ‘Ginestrino’ Langhe Nebbiolo 2018 750ml Was $41.90, Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The Conterno Fantino 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo Ginestrino opens to fragrant and delicate aromas straight from the Nebbiolo playlist. The wine opens to pretty aromas of wild cherry, rose, blood orange and iron ore. Winemaking starts with stainless steel and concludes with 10 months in French oak. The vines are planted in clay soils, and when you study the bouquet in depth, you do perceive a tad more structure and concentration as a result. Production is an ample 35,500 bottles.”

Conterno Fantino Mosconi, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Decanter 96 points
“Among the 27 hectares of Conterno Fantino is Vigna Ped, an east-facing cru within the Mosconi MGA. Similar to Ginestra, in 2017 it seems to be a bit rounder and less austere. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation naturally in the spring. It displays intense leafy lightness with wild strawberry puree and liquorice root, but also whiffs of truffle and cocoa powder. The attack is firm and assertive, with both acidity and tannins – which are large, grainy and ripe. The structure is well balanced by fruit concentration, vibrancy and complexity. Despite its meatiness, it’s not ready to drink yet. For the long haul. Drinking Window 2022 – 2040.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is deep, resonant and expansive, as wines from this site tend to be. In this tasting, the Mosconi is wonderfully deep. Its stature alone is compelling. And yet there is so much to the Mosconi. Readers will find a Barolo that melds together a rich, racy expression of fruit with plenty of structure that wraps everything together. Rich red fruit, blood orange, tar, spice and cedar build as the 2017 gains volume through to the finish.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Cerretta is bright, focused and nervy. Blood orange, red cherry fruit, spice and mint all race across the palate. There’s tremendous energy and tension running through the 2021. Vibrant saline notes round out the finish.”

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta, Barolo DOC 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $599, that’s $569.05 at 5% off and $539.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95-97 points
“Tasted from barrel, the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Cerretta is shaping up to be a beauty. What stands out most at this very young stage is the quality and the elegant tightness of the tannins. Cerretta fruit from Serralunga d’Alba makes for powerful, structured and concentrated Nebbiolo that is delivered with naked clarity and outstanding purity. These qualities are clearly linked to the vineyard site and less to the conservative efforts executed at the winery. You taste the crunch or the nervous quality of the grape skins and pulp with dark and purple berry nuances and rusty or mineral overtones that hint at the more significant presence of clay in these soils.”

Giacomo Conterno Arione, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $235, that’s $223.25 at 5% off and $211.50 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“Tasted from barrel, the 2018 Barolo Arione still has another year in botte and time in bottle before its commercial release. However, the wine shows a distinct personality that is immediately gentle and open-knit despite its very young age. With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, there is ethereal softness here, but this characterization is relative considering the ample power and depth always associated with this site. It feels like this 2018 vintage is still warming up and is slowly putting on volume and weight. Its metamorphosis is far from complete. However, what you can read into the wine now is the quality of its fruit and its classic Nebbiolo aromas of wild berry, pressed violet, rust and blood orange.”

Giacomo Conterno Francia, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Giacomo Conterno Francia, Barolo DOCG 2018 3L Displayed Price: $1,349, that’s $1,281.55 at 5% off and $1,214.10 at 10% off, 1 double-magnum in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points
“The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here.”

3 Vini di Contrada from Arianna Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti is a Rockstar.  As a woman in a male dominated industry and as a Sicilian, her rise to international acclaim seemed unlikely just a few decades ago.

Sicily is hardly the place you would imagine as the launching pad for a natural wine wunderkind. Quite economically depressed, Sicily offers low wages and Italy’s worst unemployment rate to its residents and its population has been declining as many young people leave to seek prosperity on the mainland. In choosing to stay in her homeland and stake her future there, Arianna Occhipinti might have seemed at a disadvantage, but with the number of abandoned farms on the Island, she also found opportunity. Arianna found vineyard space on the island with relative ease.

Although schooled in enology at Milan University, real world experience in Sicily’s vineyards and wineries lead her to reject many mainstream techniques, instead focusing her own efforts on biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention, natural winemaking, creating a beverage that is fresh, immediate, and tells a captivating story of place.

Arianna Occhipinti’s style and passion has helped to reinvent Italian wine in the minds of modern winemakers and wine drinkers. Us included!

Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia Rosso IGT, Sicily, Italy 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles available

Champagne

Champagne Krug

It takes a long time to make just one bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee.

Each release combines over 120 different barrel aged wines from the very finest vineyards in champagne including Ambonnay, Aÿ, Le Mesnil and Trépail. Although each release will be centered on a single vintage (2013 in this case) the wines in the assemblage will contain up to 10 to 15 different years of age at the time of blending. From there an additional 6 years of cellar is required before release. Thus an average bottle of Krug takes twenty years from vineyard to bottle.

Compare that to other high-end champagnes like Cristal, aged for 6 years before release or Dom Perignon, aged for 9 years, and see that there is no comparison.

Krug Grande Cuvee 169eme Edition Brut, Champagne, France 1.5L $599 special, 3 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “Still vibrant and focused, with plenty of dried apple, apricot, dried lemon, lime zest, pie crust, toast and flint. Powerful and structured. Tightly wound and deep. 43% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 22% pinot meunier, from 2013 to older vintages. 40% reserve wine. Needs time to come together completely.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96+ Points “Based on the 2013 vintage and complemented by some 40% reserve wines dating back to 2000, Krug’s newly released NV Grande Cuvée 169ème Édition is showing very nicely, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus oil, buttered toast, dried apricot, warm biscuits and marmalade. Medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, it’s a tauter, more chiseled rendition of Grande Cuvée by comparison with the richer, more textural and more demonstrative 168ème Édition (based on the 2012 vintage) that preceded it; but its bright spine of acidity is nicely cloaked in fruit. Concluding with a long and sapid finish, this is a very classically balanced Champagne that will reward bottle age.”

Veuve Clicquot

“Just an outstanding vintage of La Grande Dame!” –John Gilman
Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2015 750ml $199 special, 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 Points “The 2015 La Grande Dame is bright and nicely focused. There’s good energy driving a core of Pinot Noir fruit. Pear, white flowers, mint, white pepper and lime are nicely delineated. The 2015 is not the most complex Grande Dame I have ever tasted, but it offers plenty of immediacy with no vegetal notes or hard contours that have proven so challenging elsewhere. This is an expertly made Champagne by any measure. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2021. Drink: 2023-2030.”
Wine Spectator 95 Points “This graceful Champagne offers hints of smoke and toasted brioche that transition to patisserie apple and blackberry fruit, candied ginger and mandarin orange peel notes. Seamlessly knit and mouthwatering, with a minerally underpinning and a finely detailed, dotted bead. Lush and creamy on the vibrant, lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2035.”

Gerard Bertrand

Gerard Bertrand ‘Chateau l’Hospitalet Grand Vin’ La Clape Blanc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France 2019 750ml $29 special, 12 bottles available
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 Points “A certified organic and biodynamic blend of Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Viognier, the 2019 La Clape Blanc Chateau l’Hospitalet Grand Vin is barrel-fermented and aged through the spring equinox, then bottled. The oak here is subtle, lending just a hint of pencil shavings to the citrus, melon and apricot notes. Full-bodied yet vibrant and refreshing, this is a big but beautiful white wine that finishes with ample length and zesty acidity.”

Gerard Bertrand ‘Chateau l’Hospitalet Grand Vin’ La Clape, Languedoc-Roussillon, France 2020 750ml $29 special, 14 bottles available
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93 Points “A certified organic and biodynamic blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2018 La Clape Chateau L’Hospitalet Grand Vin delivers glorious aromas of garrigue, blackberries and black olives on the nose. It’s full-bodied and concentrated, with creamy-velvety tannins that effortlessly support the mass of fruit, and boasts a lingering finish spiced with salted licorice. It’s a terrific effort for drinking over the next 10 years or so.”

New Accolades for Crowley Wines

Tyson Crowley sampling the goods

As far as we’re concerned, Crowley Wines is one of the few estates in the country crafting what could be described as legitimately “Burgundian” wines. As a member of the Deep Roots Coalition, they are serious about the dry-farmed viticulture and its positive environmental benefits, but their work retains a joyful lifted quality that we look forward to sampling each vintage.

Luckily, bottle-hardened wine geeks like us are not the only ones hip to their excellence these days. Michael Alberty of Wine Enthusiast Magazine is just the latest journalist to foist praise on these homegrown favorites. Featuring expressions of warm climate sites (La Colina) cool sites, (Four Winds) in-betweeners (Sojeau) and an elegant blend of all three (Entre Nous), this is a fantastic line-up of affordable, age-worthy wines with more than a little something for everybody.

Check out these new reviews… if you haven’t tried these bottles yet, what are you waiting for?

Crowley La Colina Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 21 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 95 Points “Match this winemaker with Dundee Hills fruit and magic happens. The La Colina grabs you by the lapels with its aromas of black cherries, watermelon, rye bread and the saline quality of a fresh-shucked oyster. Bing cherries mingle with dark chocolate and dried cranberries on the medium-bodied palate, ably supported by a mix of jangly acidity and silky tannins.”

Crowley Four Winds Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 5 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 94 Points “These cranberry, black pepper and sweet pea flower aromas are capable of distracting you from actually sipping the wine. But once you do, get ready for tart red raspberry, blood orange and green tea flavors. The wine feels tangy and chewy on the palate, with lively acidity and massive tannic structure. Enjoy 2024-2036.”

Crowley Entre Nous Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $36 special, 30 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 93 Points “2022 was a return to cool vintage for Oregon, and the wines have benefitted greatly. Entre Nous has a touch of new oak that we just can’t get enough of, and it frames a palate of crunchy red flesh apple light maple candy that lead to a long umami finish.”

Crowley Sojeau Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 3 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 92 Points “Sojeau’s dark cherry and orange sorbet aromas are joined by a sweet, earthy note similar to fresh-cut hay aroma that always reminds me of growing up in Kansas. The wine’s flavors are a heady mix of boysenberries, raspberry pastilles and strong-brewed black tea. As always, the trademark Crowley acidity is a beacon in this ocean of flavor.”

Crowley Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $24 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “As soon as this wine hits the glass, sparkling clarity meets the eye. A nose of morning mist, bright green moss and honeydew melon are layered over notes of fluffy clotted cream. On the palate, chalky vitamins frame a firm fruit core of kiwi, lemon, and tart lychee.”

Crowley Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $26 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note ” …Taut edging defines the flavors as sweetly elegant and delicate. Lithe and lively, strawberry, and warm spice carry the sweet spot while forest floor and autumn leaves bring in the earthen complexity. This wine stays upright and coiled as the phenolics are spread perfectly from start to finish.”

Crowley Phoebe Four Winds Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2020 750ml $55 special, 12 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck “The 2020 Chardonnay Phoebe Four Winds was barrel-fermented and aged in 30% new French oak. It is expressive with fresh lime blossom, sour beer, and dusty earth. The palate is dry, with tart green apple, lime zest, and baking spice. Drink 2022-2025.”

There’s wine geeks and then there’s the wine super geeks who will truly appreciate this offer!

This set represents a survey of the three districts (Contradas) Andrea Occhipinti farms. Born through what she describes as “empirical observation” of her Vineyards, these specific parcels produce unique terroir expressions. Each pack contains one bottle each of the Pettineo (PT), Fossa di Lupo (FL), and Bombolieri (BB) Contradas.
Arianna Occhipinti Vini Contrada 3-PACK 2019 750ml $249 special, just 1 3-pack available!

…includes one of each:

Arianna Occhipinti Fossa di Lupo (FL) Vino di Contrada Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicily 2019 750ml
Monica Lerner- Wine Advocate 93 Points “One of three single-vineyard wines from Arianna Occhipinti, the 2019 Frappato Vino di Contrada FL shows sweet cherry, grilled rosemary and lingering tones of iron ore or rusty nail. This vineyard has red and dark brown soils with lots of stones. Those  ferrous notes come though, and the wine closes with a clean, lean-bodied texture.”

Arianna Occhipinti Bombolieri  (BB) Vino di Contrada Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicily 2019 750ml
Monica Lerner- Wine Advocate 94 Points “Pouring from a bottle with a red wax capsule, the Arianna Occhipinti 2019 Frappato Vino di Contrada BB opens to a fun, especially punchy and bright bouquet with wild berry and blue flowers. From a site with sandy soils and white rocks, this wine is especially botanical in character with dried herbs and lavender common to the Mediterranean basin. Freshness is a protagonist, and the wine closes with dry but mild tannins.”

Arianna Occhipinti Pettineo  (PT) Vino di Contrada Terre Siciliane IGT, Sicily 2019 750ml
Monica Lerner- Wine Advocate 93 Points “With fruit from 60-year-old vines, the Arianna Occhipinti 2019 Frappato Vino di Contrada PT (with 2,200 bottles made) reveals a bright and very lifted bouquet with dried cherry skin, wild rose, cast iron and grilled herb. The wine shows medium-weight texture and fine tannins that feel especially integrated in this wine from the Contrada Pettineo. This site has reddish sand soils with a layer of tuffaceous rock.”

Peter Lauer: Satisfying Saar Sale 9-10-24

“This is the Saar and Florian Lauer is currently one of the greatest winemakers in this sacred place… Employing natural-yeast fermentations, Lauer’s wines find their own balance. They tend to be more textural, deeper and more masculine. They have a preternatural sense of balance, an energy that is singular.
“Yet the hallmarks of the Saar are there: purity, precision, rigor, mineral.” – Vom Boden

Peter Lauer: Electric Riesling

Your Three-Day Discount Starts Now

Lauer makes some of the most singular, brilliant wines in the world. His wines have all the raciness, tension and electricity of standard Mosel Riesling compressed into an explosive intensity. It’s as though his wines are diamonds—beautiful, complex and dazzling, but with an incomparable density and infinitely edge.

Lauer is based in the Saar, which is the colder, windier cousin of the Mosel. It also has one of the smallest production footprints compared to the other sub-areas. This is due to the exposure to the frigid east winds that cause precipitous temperature drops as the sun sets. But when once there was a struggle to harvest, climate change has brought balance and intensity. When once the wines were ferociously acidic, the high acidities are balanced with delicate stone fruit notes, deep minerality, and plenty of aging potential regardless of the sweetness level at bottling, such as the filigreed wines of Peter Lauer.

If aren’t familiar with the Lauer wines, you owe it to yourself to try them. All of the featured wines come from the Ayler Kupp vineyard, which is located in the Saar Valley near the Mosel.  The wines are fermented down as far as the wine naturally will go. Most are dry single-parcel wines that carry the name of the specific part of the vineyard on them. They also craft Kabinetts, Spätlesen, and Auslesen wines, though with less residual sugar than modern standards. The results are glorious examples of what Saar can offer: diamond-like intensity, beauty, rarity, and precision at rock-bottom pricing.

Lauer Riesling bottles in stock at Vinopolis
“The 2023er Riesling Feinherb Barrel X is an off-dry wine (with 16 g/l of residual sugar) which comes for half from Estate vineyards and for half from purchased fruit. This hay-yellow-colored wine offers a rather reduced nose made of wet stone, passion fruit, mint, a touch of cream, and smoke. The wine proves nicely playful and zesty on the off-dry tasting palate and leaves a juicy feel of minerals and spices in the finish. This is a very nice off-dry Saar Riesling to enjoy over the coming years. Now-2028.” -Mosel Fine Wines

Mosel Fine Wines 90+ points
“The 2022er Neuenberg N°17, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a barely off-dry wine (with 12 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in this prime Lieu-Dit forming the south-southwest facing, central part of the original Kupp hill (at the foot of the hill). It offers a very aromatic and rich nose of William’s pear, smoke, anise, thyme, violet, lime tree, and cherry. The wine is both juicy but also directly zesty and spicy, with a touch of tartness and earthy spices. There is good presence and structure and the finish proves intense and broad. It is a great barely off-dry Riesling, which needs a few years to reveal its facets. It even has some upside potential with time. 2025-2034.”

“The 2023er Ayler Riesling N°25 is a bone-dry wine (with less than 4 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on the Scheidterberg and Rauberg side hills. This yellow-colored wine offers a quite aromatic and subtly creamy nose made of fresh grapefruit puree, pear, white flowers, and smoky elements. It proves smooth and suave on the palate and leaves a creamy but nicely fruity feel in the long finish. 2025-2028.” -Mosel Fine Wines

“The 2022er Unterstenberg N°12, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a dry wine (with 8 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in the similarly-named prime Lieu-Dit forming the south-southwest facing, front part of the original Kupp hill (at the foot of the hill). It has a beautifully complex and smoky nose of candied lime, grapefruit zest, smoky bacon, ginger, almond, yuzu, and white flowers. The wine is superbly playful and refined on the palate, where some light creamy and juicy elements make for an appealing touch. The finish is beautifully spicy and herbal and already fully dry. 2025-2042.”

Peter Lauer Faß 12 Ayler Kupp Unterstenberg Riesling 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $44, that’s $41.80 at 5% off and $39.60 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 90+ points
“The 2023 Unterstenberg N°12, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a dry wine (with 8 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in the similarly named prime Lieu-Dit forming the south-southwest facing, front part of the original Kupp hill (at the foot of the hill). This bright hay-yellow-colored wine offers a very attractive nose made of pear, creamy elements, spices, grapefruit puree, white flowers, and smoke. It is nicely playful on the subtly creamy palate and leaves a smooth feel of herbs and minerals in the finish. The aftertaste develops more cut. Despite being open, we feel that this wine will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to integrate its elements and develop more cut. It could then warrant a higher rating. 2028-2038.”

Vom Boden Importer Note
“As noted with Fass 25, yet more revelations of climate change, the “1er Cru” Scheidterberg and Sonnenberg hills that curl around the village of Ayl are beginning to turn out wines of real depth and complexity, yet they also still flaunt a bit of their even-more-cool-climate thing. Think of it as “Barrel X” with more punch and guts.”

“The 2022er “Stirn” N°15, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a fully off-dry wine (with 36 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in the prime south-west-facing, upper-front part of the original Ayler Kupp hill. It reveals a fully aromatic and appealing nose of yellow fruits (pineapple, Conference pear, and quince), candied grapefruit, tangerine, green apple, anise, oriental spices, and smoke. The wine proves fully off-dry on the palate as plenty of sweet and ripe fruits come through. The finish is structured and has more mineral elements with zesty and minty elements. This beautiful fully off-dry Riesling needs a few years to fully deliver. 2027-2042.”

“The 2023 Kupp Spätlese N°7, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, with AP 71 was made from fruit harvested at 90° Oechsle from vineyards on the original Kupp hill and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (67 g/l). This hay-yellow-colored wine offers a rather subtle and very complex nose made of earthy spices, pear, apricot blossom, a hint of date, cream, and smoke. It proves very subtle and elegant on the palate, where a touch of zest brings the right kick to the complex creamy and fruity flavors. “The 2022er Kupp Auslese N°10, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, was made from partially (15%) botrytized fruit harvested on the whole original Kupp hill and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar (95 g/l). This offers a still very primary yet superbly complex and layered nose of bakery elements, almond cream, candied pineapple, coconut cream, aniseed, smoky bacon, and yellow flowers. The wine is superbly smooth and sweet on the comparatively light-weighted and delicate palate.
