Top picks include:

Krug Grande Cuvee NV 750ML ($219.95) Displayed price: $159, Your price: $151.05, 18 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 points “This mouthwatering Champagne shows a lovely sense of finesse, with firm acidity deftly married to a rich profile of crème de cassis, toasted brioche and lime blossom, accented by hints of café au lait, singed orange peel and exotic spice. Long and plush on the finish.” (10/2016)

Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($349.95) Displayed price: $219, Your price: $208.05, 25 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 94 (+?) points “Medium red.  Highly nuanced yet quite primary on the nose, offering scents of raspberry, underbrush, dried rose, ginger and smoky oak.  Juicy, saline and quite dry, with dark berry and strawberry flavors complicated by an earthy perfume.  Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent length.  With 24 hours in the recorked bottle, this beauty showed a silkier texture and chewy, deep flavors of raspberry and spices that saturate the palate without leaving any impression of weight.  A great effort for the vintage.” ST

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Brouilly Pierreux, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($29.95) Displayed price: $24, Your price: $22.80, 35 bottles available
Case-12 Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Brouilly Pierreux, Beaujolais 2015 750ML ($299.95) Displayed price: $259, Your price: $246.05, 1 case available (that’s only $20.50/bottle!)
John Gilman 93+ points “As I have mentioned in the past, the Brouilly “Pierreux” bottling from Pierre-Marie Chermette hails from the southern part of Brouilly appellation, just to the east of the village of Odenas, and often this wine has more in common with bottlings of Côte de Brouilly as a result. The 2015 Pierreux is fairly low octane for the vintage, coming in at 13.5 percent, but offering plenty of depth and structure, which are the hallmarks of this year. The complex bouquet is a bit more black fruity out of the blocks than the 2014 was at a similar age, offering up scents of black cherries, pomegranate, a striking base of soil tones, woodsmoke, fresh rosemary, chicory and a nice touch of meatiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, tangy and laser-like in its focus, with a rock solid core, some firm, well-integrated tannins and superb soil drive on the very long and youthful finish. This is going to be a stunning bottle of Brouilly, but, like many of the very best 2015s, it is going to want some time in the cellar. 2019-2045+. 93+.”
Josh Raynolds 91 points “Bright violet. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the powerful, spice-accented nose. Supple and open-knit, offering fleshy cherry and cassis flavors lifted by a jolt of juicy acidity. Shows very good energy and breadth on the gently tannic, dark-fruit-dominated finish, which leaves a sappy blue fruit note behind.”

Vieux Chateau Mazerat, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($119.95) Displayed price: $89, Your price: $84.55, 36+ bottles available
Case-12 Vieux Chateau Mazerat, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($1,199.95) Displayed price: $999, Your price: $949.05, 2 cases available (that’s only $79.09/bottle!)
Robert Parker 95+ points “This is one of the tightest, most backward wines in the Jonathan Malthus portfolio. The grapes come from an old-vine parcel near Angelus and Beausejour-Duffau, and the final product is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. Again displaying plenty of minerality, which seems to be a prevailing theme throughout the 2010s from Malthus, the 2010 Vieux Chateau Mazerat is full-bodied, with an abundance of floral notes as well as black currant and blackberry fruit. Impressively endowed and built like a skyscraper, this full-bodied wine needs a good 7-8 years of cellaring and should keep for 25-30 years. Interestingly, the vines were planted in 1947.”

Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses du Diable, Rhone 2013 750ML ($49.95) Displayed price: $33, Your price: $31.35, 36+ bottles available
Case-12 Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses du Diable, Rhone 2013 750ML ($539.95) Displayed price $359, Your price: $341.05, 5 cases available (that’s only $28.42/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Dark ruby. Candied red berries, cherry compote and potpourri on the highly pungent nose; a mineral element adds vivacity. Energetic black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show excellent clarity and a hint of licorice pastille that builds as the wine opens up. The energetic finish repeats the floral and mineral notes, while supple tannins lend shape and grip.”
Wine Spectator 90 points “Offers a taut, slightly sinewy feel, with cedar-laced grip cutting through the core of dried cherry, red currant and raspberry flavors. Displays a lightly chalky spine on the finish, with an ample tobacco note.”

Round Two!

Remoissenet

In Burgundy, there are negociants (wineries that buy fruit or wine rather than owning vineyards), and there are really good negociants. Put Remoissenet in the latter category. Founded in 1877, Remoissenet was acquired in 2005 by investors including some American businessmen and negociant-par-excellence Louis Jadot. New equipment and a renewed focus followed, and the impressive results reside in bottle. At Remoissenet, for example, grapes are purchased according to quality rather than quantity. If only all negociants operated this way! Such a fruit-buying strategy paid off in the 2011 vintage, which resulted in a small crop of thick-skinned grapes. Accordingly, the wines have structure, yet do not need eons to reveal their fine Cote d’Or perfume and finesse. Enjoy these wines today, especially at the village and Premier Cru level, or keep them another handful of years. Remoissenet just keeps getting better and better, and these 2011s are proof.

Bright red/black fruit, freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet spices are all layered in the glass in a wine that captures the essence of the pure seduction of Chambolle. The Echanges is once again one of the most flat-out delicious wines in the Remoissenet range.” AG

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Le Trio, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($119.95) Was $69, Now $59, 22 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Trio is one of the most direct and focused of the 2011s here. Crushed rocks, graphite, mint and dark red berries are all laced together in a wine that impresses for its sense of harmony. Sweet floral notes add the final layers of nuance.” AG

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($279.95) Was $189, Now $169, 11 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “The 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is not lacking in personality, that much is obvious. A savory, almost wild Burgundy, the 2011 Chapelle is laced with dried herbs, tobacco, black cherries and cured meats are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2011 goes; will it always remain a bit gamy, or will it find a bit more finesse in bottle?” AG

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($349.95) Was $199, Now $169, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2011 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru is less flamboyant than the Charmes-Chambertin ‘11 tasted alongside. The fruit here is darker, a touch more tertiary but still very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a masculine Clos-de-Beze that will need two or three more years in the cellar. Personally, I prefer the harmony and plushness of the Charmes-Chambertin, although this will repay bottle age thanks to its substance and structure. Drink 2018-2030.” WA
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Chambertin Clos de Bèze isn’t ready to show all its cards just yet. This is a relatively delicate style for Bèze, with expressive floral notes that convey more finesse than power. The 2011 isn’t fully formed yet, but today my impression is that it will remain quite restrained in style.” AG

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($279.95) Was $169, Now $159, 13 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Clos de Vougeot is dense, compact and structured. Firm, chalky tannins support a core of bright red berries, mint, wild flowers and minerals. The 2011 possesses gorgeous clarity and focus, with more than enough underlying minerality to drink well for a number if years.” AG

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($279.95) $Was $199, Now $179, 22 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Ruchottes-Chambertin presents a classical expression of lifted, fragrant fruit to match its weightless personality. Today, the 2011 is incredibly expressive, with impeccable balance and a total sense of harmony that is hugely appealing.” AG

2014 Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot

“the 2014 vintage in Burgundy appears to be one of those rare breeds in the region—a year in which both the reds and whites are potentially excellent.” – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

“2014 is the school of terroir. There is no strong vintage character.” – Mounir Saouma, co-owner of Lucien Le Moine

Philippe Charlopin started his winemaking mark in Gevrey Chambertin as one of the new emerging breed of dynamic wine growers. He has developed a big following in the US with his more modern style of making wines that are ready to enjoy sooner than later. That’s not to say his farming techniques are anything but traditional, practicing organic and looking to go certified. Charlopin and his son Yann have expanded their holdings in Burgundy to 25 hectares, ranging from Chassagne-Montrachet to Chablis.

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Les Echezots 2014 750ML ($49.95) $33 special
Wine Spectator 92 points “A rich, concentrated red, with earth and animal aromas leading off, followed by black cherry, black currant and spice flavors. Verges on a thick texture, featuring well-integrated tannins and a long, fruity aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2029.”

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Gevrey-Chambertin Morceaux Vieilles Vignes 2014 750ML ($89.95) $59 special
Wine Spectator 93 points “There’s fine intensity to the cherry, currant and spice flavors here, along with a chewy structure and texture. All the elements hang together, with a dense matrix underlying the fruit, spice and mineral notes that grace the long finish. Best from 2022 through 2035.”

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay En Montchevenoy 2014 750ML ($49.95) $33 special

Domaine Michel Lafarge

Arriving Next Week

The Lafarge family has counted a vigneron among its ranks since the 18th century, and began bottling their efforts in the early 1900’s. Wine in barrel was sold to metropolitan restaurants as early as the 1850’s. When many in Burgundy began to employ chemical farming in the 1950’s, Lafarge wanted no part of it – an act, or inaction, which led like-minded vignerons to follow suit. The domaine began to utilize biodynamic farming techniques in the mid-90’s, an effort which now includes Lafarge’s son and his wife, Frédéric and Chantal.

To this day, the wines from the estate are rightfully held in the highest regard. They’re graceful and substantial, though have been known to require time.

Michel Lafarge Wines Arriving Next Week:

Domaine Michel Lafarge Les Aigrots Rouge, Beaune Premier Cru 2008 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2008 Beaune Les Aigrots is another beautifully complete, harmonious wine. This deceptively mid-weight Beaune blossoms on the palate with a textured personality and tons of class. The gorgeous inner perfume flows through nicely to the intense, complex finish.”

Domaine Michel Lafarge Clos des Chenes, Volnay Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes has a more expressive, mineral-driven bouquet than the Caillerets – so much energy here and that is translated down to the palate that is poised and focused. It is laden with vibrant tart red cherry fruit, boysenberry and mineral, great depth and length and yet so fresh and approachable. This is one of those wines that I suspect will drink early but also repay cellaring.”

Domaine Michel Lafarge Clos du Chateau des Ducs, Volnay Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
Burghound 92 points “Seemingly without fail the Lafarges achieve genuinely remarkable purity of fruit and the 2013 Clos du Château des Ducs proves to be no exception as the high-toned nose is the essence of red pinot fruit along with subtle hints of spice, earth, floral and soft stone nuances. There is terrific delineation and even more minerality with a bit more punch and power on the dusty, mouth coating and lingering finish. This is perhaps a bit more delicate than it usually is though it is by no means light.”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs has a tightly would bouquet with brambly red fruit, blackberry leaf and granitic scents that waft reluctantly from the glass. The palate is very well structured with a keen line of acidity, ebullient red cherry and strawberry fruit with delineated, very focused and long in the mouth. Excellent.”

Domaine Michel Lafarge Les Mitans, Volnay Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($189.95) $159 pre-arrival special
Burghound 90-92 points “Once again there is striking purity to the elegant and airy essence of red currant, cherry and pomegranate suffused nose. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the refined and lacy middle weight flavors that possess a dusty and overtly saline finish. This is textbook Mitans with its finesse and restrained palate feel.”

Arriving Late August

From Around the World!
M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette, Rhone 2015 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The finest vintage for this cuvée I’ve ever tasted, the sensational 2015 Hermitage Chante Alouette boasts awesome notes of white peach, orange marmalade and white flowers in a rich, full-bodied, concentrated style. Coming from three different terroirs on Hermitage Hill (Méal, Les Murets and Chante Alouette), don’t miss it!”

Fattoria Le Pupille Elisabetta Geppetti ‘Poggio Valente’, Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($31.95) $28 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 94 points “This is a selection of the best sangiovese on the property. The owner says the goal is to make something to compete with the best Brunello. And so it is. Full-bodied, firm and lively. Wonderful texture and length. Ripe and delicious. Superb. Drink or hold.”

Podere Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore, Bolgheri 2013 750ML ($89.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points “The first word that comes to mind when describing this wine is seamless. The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco offers a generous and forthcoming succession of dark fruit and spice-driven flavors that fit together like a long chain of pearls on a necklace. It’s impossible to taste where one flavor starts and the next one ends. That balanced and harmonious approach is evident in the mouth where it offers a silky, smooth and long textural impression. I suggest another few years of bottle aging before popping the cork on this beautiful blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. This is no doubt the best wine from Grattamacco tasted in the past decade.”

E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Cannubi, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is a fine and sculpted wine that has benefitted from the cool vintage conditions and the long growing season. The wine shows a very pretty nose with wild berry aromas followed by pressed rose, ash, wild mint, tea and earthy black truffle. It shows fine tannins that are slightly camouflaged by the generosity of the fruit. The Cannubi cru offers extreme elegance and finesse. Despite those svelte contours, this wine is built to last.”

Elio Grasso Gavarini Vigna Chiniera, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Elio Grasso Gavarini Vigna Chiniera, Barolo DOCG 2013 1.5L ($219.95) $189 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2013 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera stands apart in this tasting of Elio Grasso’s new releases. The fruit portrayed shows a very crisp and focused quality. It absolutely pops from the glass with brilliant sharpness. Gianluca Grasso tells me lab reports confirm the higher acidic tenor of the wine, although this is not necessarily perceived acidity that you taste. Aromas of wild berry, balsam herb, licorice and smoke emerge delicately from the bouquet. The wine’s mouthfeel evokes a profound sense of elegance thanks to those noble tannins and its silky texture.”

Elio Grasso Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Elio Grasso Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate, Barolo DOCG 2013 1.5L ($219.95) $189 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté does a great job of portraying its vineyard characteristics. This single vineyard is located at higher altitudes with thicker clay soils. This combination helps to build the wine’s intensity, structure and muscle. It undergoes 45 days of submerged cap fermentation. Dark cherry and blackberry open the bouquet. These aromas are followed by spice, smoke, iron and crushed mineral. The robust nature of those aromas makes for a beautiful contrast to the fine, silky and more delicate (relatively speaking) nature of the mouthfeel.”

Cantine del Notaio Il Repertorio Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata 2013 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The Cantine del Notaio 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Il Repertorio is a fabulous wine that possesses the depth and noble sophistication that you should expect from this small, quality wine denomination in the deep south of Italy. The bouquet is beautifully embellished with blackberry preserves, tobacco, bitter chocolate and smoky granite. The presentation is tight and seamless with a firm tannic nature that pulls the wine together in terms of substance and length. This excellent wine should flesh out further with more aging.”

Bodegas Vina Herminia Rioja Crianza DOCa, Rioja 2013 750ML ($24.95) $18 pre-arrival special
Decanter 95 points –Platinum-Best Red Rioja– “An elegant and intense nose comprising black fruit, blackberry and herbs, with a real medicinal edge is followed deliciously by a well-structured palate of licorice, plums, tobacco and black fruit notes, which also has round meaty tannins, a lovely texture and a beautiful long finish.”

Bodegas Arrayan Estela de Arrayan, Mentrida 2010 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 95 points “Beautiful, layered wine showing great depth on the nose. Ripe strawberries, cacao, roasted coffee beans, iodine and salt undertones. Full-bodied and round-textured red with soft tannins following through to a mouth-watering and juicy finish. Blend of syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Drink now.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Finca La Emperatriz Cepas Viejas Garnacha, Rioja DOCa 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 95 points “An intensely herbal and floral nose displaying raspberries, cherries and hints of cloves. Mint, too. Medium body, ripe and juicy tannins and a very long, citrusy and savory finish. Made from vines over 65 years old. A wine that boasts superb finesse and style. Drink or hold.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The wine that won my heart this time was without a doubt the 2014 Finca la Emperatriz Garnacha Cepas Viejas. This wine is sourced from the Rioja Alta subzone, not quite the classical Garnacha place, from the only old-vine Garnacha plot they have in the estate. It displays a captivating nose of sweet Garnacha fruit akin to cherries in liqueur, but keeping the freshness in a coolish vintage like 2014. The uncrushed grapes fermented in open-top stainless steel vats and 500-liter oak barrels with indigenous yeasts after five days of pre-fermentative maceration, and it matured in 500-liter oak barrels for ten months. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, delicious fresh flavors and very good length, ending with a tasty, almost salty note.”
