Marqués de Murrieta is one of the great pillars of classical Rioja—a titan of the region that’s responsible for some of the greatest wines ever produced in Spain. They resemble more polished, powerful versions of López de Heredia while sharing their age-worthiness. However they also offer a distinctly more fruit driven profile in their youth. Murrieta’s wines have always been favorites amongst critics and consumers alike.

Marques de Murrieta (Finca Ygay) Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2016 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special, that’s $22.80/btl at 5% or $21.60/btl at 10% off!
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93-94 points
“I also tasted an unbottled sample of the 2016 Rioja Reserva, which should be bottled in a couple of months, before the summer. What I tasted was the final blend, and it represents the year—2016 was a cooler year, and the wine also goes in that direction. 2016 saw a large crop, and the grapes for this cuvée were harvested at the end of September, going toward more finesse and subtleness, combined with the natural power. There was a change in the winery in 2016 that was finalized in 2018 with the new winery. The wine is textured and fine, and it’s more elegant than the 2015 I tasted next to it. The detail and texture on the palate is different, and the quality of the tannins is completely different. This should be released in early 2020. There will be almost 1.1 million bottles of this, which is remarkable, as they have managed to increase quality and quantity.”
James Suckling 94 points “This is very structured and powerful with a dense and rich palate of ripe fruit and hints of toasted oak. Full and layered. Structured. Released February 2020. Needs a few years of bottle age. Try after 2021.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points “Brilliant violet. Red and black currant, cherry, fresh flowers and baking spices on the highly perfumed nose, along with hints of vanilla and pipe tobacco. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering bitter cherry, cassis, spicecake and cola flavors that turn sweeter through the midpalate. Successfully blends power and delicacy and finishes very long, smoky and smooth, with fine-grained tannins adding gentle grip.”
Wine & Spirits 93 points “This is a blend of tempranillo (87 percent), graciano, mazuelo and garnacha grown at the Finca Ygay, Murrieta’s estate in the hills above Logroño. Aged in American oak for 18 months, it developed a hint of mintiness over its silken black-currant and tobacco flavors (think menthol cigarette smoked with aristocratic nonchalance in Monaco). Bright and somber, tense and refined, this wine’s limestone edges carry the essence of Rioja in a healthy wine that seems to get its style directly from the ground.”

Wine & Spirits 93 points
“This is named for the period of time when the Rhone River sluiced its way from the Alps through Chateauneuf, leaving behind a plateau paved with the baseball-sized stones as the water retreated. Those “galets” are said to help the vines ripen their fruit in this northern sector of the appellation, the stones emanating the sun’s heat. This wine reflects both a spring-like coolness in its spicy, savory herbal notes and a warmth in its lush purple fruit. It’s spicy and firm, with a little bit of grip to the tannins that suggests this could benefit from aging in bottle for a few more years.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93 points “Another stellar vintage for this cuvée, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Miocene is a classic blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre from a mix of soil types, aged in older barrels and concrete tanks. It’s ripe and plummy, with notes of black cherries and licorice, yet there’s also a sense of freshness. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, it’s already approachable but has the substance to age through 2030. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.”

Jeb Dunnuck 95+ points
“The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Origines takes things up a notch on the serious scale and has a much more concentrated, focused, structured style. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah that saw 50% new barrels, it offers a rich, concentrated, focused texture, notes of black raspberries, roasted garrigue, pepper, and tons of minerality, building tannins, and outstanding length. The new oak is beautifully integrated, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s one of those wines that has a kiss of modern character yet stays firmly planted in the Southern Rhône.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Cellar Selection. In contrast to the sun-drenched red fruit of this producer’s other special cuvée, the Vieilles Vignes, Les Origines is the darker, more sultry sibling. Flavors of crème de cassis and spiced black plums are densely concentrated, almost languorous in mouthfeel, but edged by lifting tones of crushed earth and smoky minerals. It’s still a bit closed in character but should open from 2022 and improve further well through 2030. -Anna Lee C. Iijima”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape les Origines is richer and denser than the entry-level bottling, layering hints of chocolate over black cherries, plums and purple raspberries. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah, half was aged in new barriques, while the other half stayed in concrete tanks. It’s nearly over the top, being full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a long, plush finish and never-ending waves of flavor on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.”

Case-6 Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, Rhone 2017 750ML ($499.95) $426 Super Subscriber Special (that’s only $71/bottle!)
Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, Rhone 2017 750ML ($119.95) Was $89, Now $75 Super Subscriber Special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points
“The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a bigger, richer, more opulent wine. Beautiful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets, all flow to a full-bodied, Châteauneuf Du Pape that has a voluptuous, sexy texture, brilliant depth of fruit, fine tannins, and a purity of fruit that’s hard to find in this vintage. It’s a thrill a minute, and while it’s approachable today, it will keep for 15-20 years. 416 cases.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 96 points “As usual, the Vieilles Vignes takes things to another level. The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes—a blend of 45% each Grenache (aged in concrete) and Mourvèdre (aged in new barriques), plus 10% Syrah (also in new wood)—features intense aromas of purple raspberries, black cherries and plums, plus the merest hints of vanilla and baking spices. Full-bodied, lush and creamy on the palate, it somehow remains balanced and fresh, with tremendous length on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.”
Wine & Spirits 96 points “The Jaume family has been growing grapes in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since 1826; they now own four Rhone wineries, including Domaine Grand Veneur, established in 1976. This wine comes off the estate’s oldest vines, a blend of half Grenache, the rest mourvedre, syrah and small bits of other varieties, all the parcels farmed organically. It’s a stunning wine, exuberantly fresh in its red-berry flavors while sophisticated in its detail, weaving in notes of licorice and pepper, flowers and wood spice. Even after the bottle has been open for a couple of days, the wine’s freshness doesn’t flag, the smooth, fine tannins holding it steady. This should age well for a decade at least.”
Decanter 96 points “Grown on galets, the fruit for this wine is all destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before being aged for 16 months, half in concrete and half in new barriques. The strong Mourvèdre component comes through as deep, ripe dark fruits and violets. It’s full-bodied and dense with soft, lush tannins, and is held together by a beam of strong acidity, finishing long. A lithe, muscular, impressive wine that will last the course. Just 5,000 bottles made.”

Chateau Les Mesclances Cuvee Romane Rosé, Cotes de Provence 2020 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Rosenthal Wine note
““Romane” Côtes de Provence Rosé From 20 year-old vines at the base of the hill overlooking the estate, the Romane is made up of 70% Grenache, along with Cinsault and Mourvedre, the latter of which provides a point of amertume (a fresh, bitter note) and a salinity that quickly draws one back to the wine. The Grenache spends a few hours macerating with the skins, providing an extra layer of depth and structure to this classic wine.”

Explosive aromas overlay a complex and noble structure that show clearly why this wine is a cut above the classic Cotes de Provence character.”

Chateau Simone Palette Rosé, Provence 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Rosenthal Wine note
“Chateau Simone Palette Rosé: The Château Simone Rosé is a wine that belies the notion that rosés are simple wines to be drunk up young. We have indulged ourselves with 10-year old Château Simone Rosé and have marveled at the tenacity, vibrancy and complexity of this very serious wine. The blend is identical to the rouge: 45% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault, 20% Syrah, Castet, Manosquin, Carignan, Muscat Noir & Blanc. Aged in barrel, it is powerful and age-worthy with a steely character and a grey-tinted aura to the faded rose-petal robe. We import, on average, 1500 bottles per annum for the US market.”

Chateau Soucherie Rose de Loire Cuvee L’Astree, Loire 2020 750ML ($25.95) $21.90 special
Rosenthal Wine note
“Rosé de Loire: This dry, mineral-driven Rosé is produced from Grolleau (70%) and Gamay (30%). The vines are planted to clay, sandstone and schist soils. The wine is a product of the direct press method of vinification and the elevage is in cuve with bottling occurring usually in April of the spring following harvest. We purchase approximately 7800 bottles for the US market.”

De Maison Selections note
“Tentations offers an accessible entry-point into Provence wine. Tentations is made with exceptional ingredients, including fruit from young tibouren vines and some purchased fruit from farmers they have long-standing relationships with, in prime spots in La Londe. The Tentations wines do not undergo the extensive aging process of the Clos Cibonne line. Offering immediate and unpretentious enjoyment, they are incredible food wines and represent one of the best wine values in the Côtes de Provence region. Site: La Londe. Grapes: 50% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, and 15% Tibouren.”

Oregon

Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($26.95) $20.50 special
Winery note
“Modest yields combined with a cool growing season led to a very ideal set of Chardonnays in 2019. These are light to medium bodied wines, with great depth, structure, and acidity.  Alcohols are between 11.8-12.8%, giving them a weightlessness, balanced by textural richness from extended elevage on the lees. Flavors are a seamless transition from attack to the finish, and they are more sinewy than soft. While it may seem overly dramatic, as I tasted through the line up, I kept thinking of looking at an exhibit of Samurai swords that came through Portland several years ago. While they will be fine to consume young, these wines scream for a few years in the cellar and I believe will be absolutely outstanding in 5-15 years.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($47.95) $34.50 special
Winery note
“Once again our quarter acre of Chardonnay at the very top of Le Puits Sec only gave us a single barrel of wine. It was barrel-fermented in neutral oak and allowed to complete its full malo-lactic conversion. Following the malos we racked the wine clean and held it in barrel for an additional 12 months. While not as broad as the 2018, there is a touch more fruit—more quince than apple— than the 2017 and a firm mineral texture.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Holocene Memorialis Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points
“Showing beautifully, with a Côte de Nuit-like nose of darker cherries, strawberries, sappy herbs, baking spices, and flowers, the 2018 Pinot Noir Memorialis is medium to full-bodied and has a gorgeously textured, layered mouthfeel, present tannins, and a solid spine of acidity. It would give many a Grand Cru Red Burgundy a run for its money in a blind tasting… I continue to love these Pinot Noirs under Todd Alexander’s Holocene label. While they’re not from Washington State, I was able to taste these during my visit with Force Majeure (which are also made by Todd) and I’m thrilled to be able to include them here.”

We love the power and richness balanced by impeccable aromatics and vibrant acidity.
Bow & Arrow Fool’s Gold, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Winery note “60% Chardonnay/40% Sauvignon Blanc. I decided to mark the 10th vintage of Bow & Arrow by introducing a new wine to the fold. And while it would appear obvious to pursue an analogue of Cheverny Blanc to provide Rhinestones with a sibling I avoided this particular blend because I have been resisting bringing Chardonnay into the cellar. Not that I have anything against Chardonnay. Quite the opposite actually, as I’ve always maintained the best wines I’ve tasted from Oregon have been Chardonnays. So here is what the stork’s brought us: it isn’t light. It isn’t crisp and mineral. It’s about time and air and lees. It’s about power but in the way a Pharoah Sanders solo is powerful, when the notes won’t suffice any longer and the raw energy and essential nature of the saxophone is the only sound that can communicate the feelings and ideas bursting from that being.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Bow & Arrow Air Guitar, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Winery note “Cab in the Willamette Valley. It’s a thing and I won’t waiver from this position. Cab, grown in a cool climate, has produced some of the greatest wines on Earth. For decades. It still does.  Like the Dude, it abides… Of all the reds in the cellar I’m always the most excited about the Cab (Franc and Sauvignon) because of what it says about the WV the other varieties can’t say. The herbal dimensions of red wine is spoken about in Cab. And tannin—the distortion pedal of wine—is an option here.  Sometimes you need your music to get loud, you know? The 2019 is notable because only on two occasions has Air Guitar drifted fully into “I can’t believe this isn’t Chinon” territory—the 2014 vintage and now this vintage. There’s something elusive about the “Old World” vibe in wines from, well… the Old World.  They are hard to mimic in wines made here. But when the planets are aligned and the right amount of old ass puncheon is employed (I’ve given up the secret to the sauce…) it makes a cameo in my movie. Time will tell but this may even surpass the 2014 which many of you have heard me say is the best (red) wine I’ve ever made. Also, 2020 was unkind to Cab so there won’t be another Air Guitar until the 2021 vintage, so… 50% Cabernet Franc/50% Cabernet Sauvignon.”

WillaKenzie Estate Willamette Valley Chardonnay 2017 750ML ($34.95) $24 special
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2017 Chardonnay Willamette Valley was barrel fermented with 75% malolactic fermentation, and it aged in about 30% new oak. It has inviting scents of poached pears and red apple skin with notes of white blossoms, white peach, cheese rind and oyster shell. The palate is light to medium-bodied with a lightly rounded texture and a good core of fruit lifted by juicy acidity, finishing long, clean and refreshing. A restrained but approachable style of Chardonnay. 1,452 cases produced.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 90 points “Limpid, green-tinged straw. Fresh citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, joined by a hint of fennel as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on entry, then more taut in the midpalate, offering bitter pear skin, Meyer lemon and candied ginger flavors. Finishes long and spicy, with a lingering pear note and a hint of florality.”

WillaKenzie Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2017 750ML ($27.95) $19.50 special
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 91 points “Medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley opens with inviting scents of shaved nutmeg, cinnamon stick, warm cranberry sauce, rhubarb and ripe raspberries with accents of warm earth, blackberries and autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied and silky with grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on an earthy note. 11,055 cases produced.”
Wine Spectator 90 points “Well-built and elegantly focused, with expressive raspberry, sweet anise and black tea flavors that take on richness toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2026. 11,000 cases made. — TF”

Carpe Diem Chardonnay, Anderson Valley 2016 750ML ($24.95) $16.60 special
Wine Enthusiast 91 points
“Vivid oaky, earthy aromas lead to ripe firm flavors of apple and citrus in this assertive and well-structured wine. The char and wood-smoke nuances carry over to the palate, along with a nice nip of tannin and firm acidity that help to offset the richness. -Jim Gordon”

Domaine Forey Pere et Fils Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2018 750ML ($249.95) $219 special, only 3 bottles available!
Rosenthal Note
“Clos de Vougeot is the defensive lineman to the Echezeaux’s running back—massively scaled and more squarely built. Regis works a third of a hectare of 40-to-45-year-old vines here, and this is, appropriately, the densest and most currently inscrutable wine of the lineup. Still, at its core is a certain elegance, which imbues this broad-shouldered wine with a real sense of refinement. 60% whole clusters.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Domaine Forey Pere et Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2018 750ML ($249.95) $219 special, only 3 bottles available!
Rosenthal Note
“Forey owns 0.3 hectares in this exalted cru, in the climats of Les Treux and Clos Saint-Denis, flanked by the grand cru Grands-Echezeaux to the north and Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots to the south. All but a small recently replanted portion of the holdings are between 40 and 65 years old, and Forey always wrests a wine of refined power from these old vines. 70% whole clusters.”

Domaine Forey Pere et Fils Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Cote de Nuits 2018 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, only 1 bottle available!
Rosenthal Note
“From small holdings in the premier crus Clos Baulet and Les Blanchards, Forey’s Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru—made with 50% whole clusters—exudes pure energy, offering tangy red fruits, fine-grained tannins, and intense minerality. The classic note of savory Morey earth is present but understated, marrying wonderfully with the wine’s stem-inflected overlay of spice.”

Domaine Forey Pere et Fils Les Perrieres, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, only 3 bottles available!
Rosenthal Note
“Regis works a 0.42-hectare parcel of 75-to-80-year-old vines in this vaunted cru, and this 2018 —vinified with 30% whole clusters—is an immediate leap forward in complexity from the previous wines. All its elements present with greater force: juicier fruit, firmer yet more fully enrobed tannins, and a more intense earth-mineral interplay.”

Domaine Marcel Lapierre Morgon Roche du Py ‘Cuvee Camille’, Beaujolais 2019 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, only 3 bottles available!
Winery note
“With only 1.0540 hectares (2.6 acres) in production, the vines for Cuvée Camille are located within La Roche du Py, an old-vine plot on the Côte du Py with shallow “roches pourries” soils and southwestern exposure. The grapes go through the same meticulous steps as our Morgon, except that the length of maceration in tapered wooden vats is longer. This cuvée was born when Camille Lapierre,  (Marcel’s daughter and current co-winemaker) returned to the estate in 2013. It is also an hommage to her grandfather Camille (Marcel’s father).”

France–Rhone

Chateau de Rouanne Vinsobres 2018 750ML ($34.95) $29 special
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points
“The 2018 Vinsobres comes from an estate owned by Louis Barruol (of Château Saint Cosme in Gigondas) and checks in as a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, all from a single parcel just outside the village of Vinsobres. Revealing a deep purple, translucent hue as well as lots of mulberry and black raspberry fruit interwoven with notes of ground pepper, violets, and game, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a rounded, supple, elegant texture, notable purity, and outstanding length. Seeming to have one foot in the Northern Rhône with its gamey, violet characteristics and one foot in the south with its richness and opulence on the palate, it’s a terrific, noteworthy Vinsobres to enjoy over the coming 4-6 years.”

Italy-Venato

Dal Forno Romano Monte Lodoletta, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2013 750ML ($419.95) $319 special, only 3 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta is my favorite wine in the retrospective, along with the amazing 2011, 2009 and 1996 vintages. This wine was released at the beginning of this year, and because Dal Forno skipped over the 2014 vintage, this is the only Amarone we will see for a while (until the highly anticipated 2015 is released). The 2013 vintage is characterized by a slightly more streamlined mouthfeel (which isn’t saying much given the baseline enormity of these wines) with carefully etched aromas of black cherry, rum cake, dark chocolate and toasted espresso. The 2013 vintage was balanced overall without the sudden heat waves we saw in the summers of 2011 and 2012. The grapes finished a slow and steady ripening process over an extended growing season. The effect is graceful and focused. Put this bottle aside in your cellar for the decades to come.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 97 points “The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta needs time – and a lot of it – to show all of its charms. But worry not, because you can already find pleasure in its dramatic display of rich plums and cherries dipped in mocha-infused chocolate with a dusting of cinnamon sugar and sweet tobacco. This is black as night yet truly purple in color, with depths of concentrated wild berry fruits contrasted by zesty acids that do an amazing job of lifting the expression. Grippy tannins saturate slowly, sneaking up on you and lasting throughout the impossibly long black hole of a finish, where notes of licorice, bitters and a coating of cocoa powder linger. Wow. The 2013 is built for the cellar and with tons of upside potential. If you dare to delve into one of these while young, I’d suggest opening your bottle a number of hours prior to enjoying. That said, this will be worth the wait.”

Dal Forno Romano Monte Lodoletta, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2008 750ML ($349.95) $319 special, only 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 98 points
“The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella is compelling. With a little air, the tannins begin to soften, releasing a myriad of intense dark aromas and flavors. Bittersweet chocolate, cloves, violets, plums and blackberry jam cover every inch of the palate in a stunning, headspinning Amarone that captures all of the best qualities of the year. When Romano Dal Forno’s wines are on, there is nothing quite like them, and that is certainly the case here. If opened young, the 2008 needs a little air. Actually, a lot of air.”
James Suckling 97 points “Wonderful aromas of rose petal, blackberry, sugared walnut and hints of sea salt. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a warm, enticing palate with dried fruits, blackberry, black olive and freshly cracked slate. Fabulous Amarone.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “Production was skipped over in 2007 due to extreme hail damage. The fruit that would normally be destined to Amarone went to the lower tier Valpolicella Superiore instead. The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta marks a return to a slightly cooler vintage with a longer growing season slowed down during the summer’s moderate temperatures. Indeed, harvest was wrapped up during the first days of November. The blend is mostly Corvina, at about 60%, with smaller parts Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina and Oseleta. The new Dal Forno winery was finished in 2008, complete with the unique vacuum-sealed fermentation tasks that help to avoid any intrusive oxygen during winemaking. Indeed, this wine is balanced and elegant with fruit that is still crunchy and very much alive. The tannins are firm and nicely integrated into the wine’s thick, fleshy consistency. This vintage is characterized by a very elegant and graceful approach, which must be taken into context given the enormity of a wine of this caliber. Happily, there is no doubt that this vintage should still evolve steadily over time.”

Italy – Tuscany

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($34.95) $26 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“The 2017 Chianti Classico will delight Castell’in Villa fans. No, it is not a repeat of the 2016. Let’s get that out of the way. Instead, readers will find a silky, wonderfully nuanced Chianti Classico that is ready to charm right out of the gate. All of the estate signatures are present, but the 2017 benefits from a bit more immediacy because of the warm growing season. Sweet red cherry, cedar, tobacco, sage and dried herbs linger nicely. The 2017 is a gorgeous Chianti Classico. Best of all, it will drink well upon release.”

Lingua Franca

New Arrivals

Lingua Franca has made quite the name for its in a very short period of time.  Helmed by legendary sommelier Larry Stone, the winery has spared no expense in pursuit of quality and the wines show this.  The whites are lean, crisp and bright, with a reductive minerality and the reds are pretty, elegant and very inspired by Burgundy.

Of particular note are their two higher end bottlings, based off of estate vineyards.  The Chardonnay comes from a site called Bunker Hill—a windy site just south of Salem in the heart of the Van Duzer corridor.  The resulting wine manages to be intense without being overly rich—it’s as though they just managed to put more wine in the wine, resulting in a density and complexity that’s wonderful to taste.  The Estate Pinot hails from their LS vineyard, in the heart of the Eola-Amity hills (and right next to famed sites like Seven Springs).  Like its neighbors, the vineyard shows classic Eola-Amity structure, perfume and concentration.

Newly Arrived & In Stock Now from Lingua Franca:

Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($39.95) $29.90 special
Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“#17 Top 100 in 2020. This is a stunning wine and a sensational value. Succulent, tangy and concentrated in ripe fruit, it explodes with flavors of lemon, peach, apricot and papaya lifted by a squeeze of lime. Fermented in a mix of concrete and neutral barrels, it was then aged in new puncheons and neutral barriques. -Paul Gregutt”
Wine & Spirits Magazine 94 points “Drawn mostly from vineyards in the Eola–Amity Hills, Avni seems to capture the nerve and tension of whites from that AVA. The 2018, fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in mostly used barrels and puncheons, reminded me of a golden slope, not unlike Lingua Franca’s sunny, south-facing home vineyard, which tumbles down toward the winery. Avni is warm and marvelously complex, with notes of chilled pineapple and toffee, of wheat and pear, one moment tense and elegant, another moment considerably richer. Drink some now but cellar a few bottles, too, to see where they will take you.”

Lingua Franca ‘Avni’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($39.95) $29.90 special
Wine Spectator 93 points
“A lithe wine, with laser focus, offering layers of snappy cherry, river stone and savory dark spice flavors that build tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2027. 2,600 cases made.  –TF”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Editor’s Choice. Bursting open with blueberry and blackberry fruit, this well-balanced Avni integrates its savory notes perfectly. It’s aromatic and brings a light suggestion of mineral. Barrel aging included 20% new oak, and it responds well to a bit of extra breathing time. -Paul Gregutt”
Wine & Spirits Magazine 92 points “Drawn from mostly Eola–Amity Hills vineyards, including Larry Stone’s estate, this is youthful and brisk, with a light red-cherry scent lined by oak. The plum flavors have an earthiness that brings the wine to a darker hue, emphasized by weighty and mineral tannins and a barrel element that will need time to tuck into the wine. —P.J.C. (2,500 cases)”
Winery Note “The Avni Pinot Noir reflects the greater impact of our own Lingua Franca Estate fruit in the wine. The resulting aromas are beautiful expressions of rose petal, wet stone, black plum, red cherry, and savory elements. It has a remarkably delicate tannin structure, but is also layered with seductive fruit. It is vibrant and fresh.”

Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2018 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Decanter 96 points
“Lovely, expressive notes of juicy grapefruit and ripe pear, toast and oak spice make an appearance but the cask ageing is very well integrated. The overall impression is of a consummate balance between richness and freshness, with another layer of firm underlying acidity too, and the wine lingers enticingly. As consultant Dominique Lafon notes: ‘Our better wines are not the bigger. Our selection is on refinement.’”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This sleek yet rich wine is packed with ripe citrus, Honeycrisp apple, peach and pineapple tones. Barrel fermented and aged in 40% new oak, it showcases spectacular fruit on the palate that is softened by creamy, lightly toasty barrel flavors. -Paul Gregutt”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points “Pale yellow. Mineral-accented nectarine, orange, Anjou pear, iodine and white flowers on the intensely perfumed nose. Smooth, fleshy and dry in the mouth, offering concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of fennel, sweet butter and candied lemon peel. Shows excellent depth as well as energy and finishes minerally, smoky and impressively long, featuring lingering citrus and pit fruit notes. 40% new oak.”
Wine & Spirits 94 points “A young-vine blend of Montrachet clone and Clone 76 chardonnay planted on this estate vineyard’s shallowest soils, this wine changes dramatically as it takes on air: At first it’s leesy and drawn, then limey, delicate and floral, continuing to unveil a panoply of flavors—pineapple, honey, lemon curd, lees, gunflint—that speak to its complexity and sunny presence. Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 points “Medium ruby, the 2018 Pinot Noir Mimi’s Mind has broody aromas of blackberries laced with earth, aniseed and classy whole-cluster spice. The palate is medium-bodied, black-fruited, glossy and ultra fresh with a lovely dichotomy of bright freshness lifting the long finish.”

Clos du Caillou

Arriving ETA December

If you don’t have a case of each wine in your cellar yet, you are seriously missing out on the best values in Chateauneuf and Cotes du Rhone in the shop. Sure, there’s plenty of highly lauded and handsomely pointed 2016 Chateauneufs in the $100+++ range. But isn’t it more fun to find an epic estate that doesn’t command those prices?

Enter Clos du Caillou.

They’ve flown unnoticed by buyers (though certainly not by the reviewers!) while the big names just raised their prices. Perhaps it’s because the estate is so small and hard to find. Fortunately, as longtime fans of the estate, we have their wines specially imported just so we could offer them to you.

The estate is one of the favorites of top reviewers for the region and the CDP can be had for well under $50 a bottle. What’s not to love?

Arriving ETA December:

Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition, Rhone 2017 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91-92 points
“Glistening ruby-red. Pungent cherry pit and black currant aromas, along with hints of licorice, musky herbs and cracked pepper. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering slow-to-open bitter cherry and dark berry flavors braced by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Shows firm tannic grip on the persistent finish, which leaves suggestions of candied licorice and cherry preserves behind. This is a pretty serious example of a “basic” bottling, and it deserves some patience.”
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points “Kirsch, blackberry, ground pepper, and incense notes all dominate the bouquet of the medium to full-bodied 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Caillou. It offers beautiful purity of fruit, a rounded, mouthfilling texture, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade.”

Can’t wait? We have a smidgen of their 2016 Les Safres remaining:

Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres, Rhone 2016 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, only 5 bottles remaining
Wine Advocate 95 points
“Sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Bédines, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is 95% Grenache, with the remainder being a mix of other permitted varieties. Like the other wines from Le Clos du Caillou, it shows great intensity and purity. Flowering garrigue accents black cherry fruit in this full-bodied, fresh, vibrant and intense wine, which ends with a burst of bright orange zest and waves of silky tannins.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres comes from more sandstone soils and is mostly Grenache. Spice strawberries, kirsch, dried herbs, flowers, and ample sandy, stony notes all emerge from this fleshy, medium to full-bodied, structured wine that has the classic weightless texture of the estate. This beauty has an exotic edge as well as a distinct salinity and is the finest version of this cuvée to date.”
James Suckling 94 points “Immense, seamless depth. Alluring, fresh, dark-plum, spice and chocolate aromas and flavors. The tannins are immaculately plush, long and even. Superb. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2020.”

Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team.”

“One of the finest wines I’ve tasted from the estate is unquestionably the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Fundacio, which is 60% Syrah from Maury with the balance Mourvèdre and Grenache, vinified and aged in small barrels. Full-bodied, incredibly pure, elegant, and silky, it boasts awesome notes of crème de cassis, black olives, leafy herbs, and subtle gamey, salty nuances. It’s a rich, powerful wine yet just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It should keep for a decade.”

Domaine Lafage Lieu Dit Narassa, Cotes du Roussillon 2016 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 91 points
“The 2016 Narassa, a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, carries five grams per liter of residual sugar, right at the threshold of normal detectability. As a result, some tasters may find this sweet, while others may see it as a dry wine. I’d opt for pairing it with cheeses at the end of a meal, where its decadently ripe flavors of cherries and chocolate will shine, accented by hints of violets and dried spices.”

70 year old vines grown organically on black schist and clay limestone. A value that’s nearly impossible to beat.
Domaine Lafage ‘Tessellae’ Carignan Vieilles Vignes, IGP Cotes Catalanes 2017 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 91 points
“Moving to the reds, the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Tessellae Carignan (100% Carignan) comes from the Agly Valley and was brought up all in tank. Blackberries, leather, dried herbs, and licorice notes all emerge from this spicy, medium-bodied, silky Carignan that has terrific purity and elegance. It’s another wine from Jean-Marc that over-delivers. Drink it over the coming couple of years.”
