New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

Chapter 24 Vineyards ‘The Fire’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 375ML ($29.95) $24 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “(40 percent new oak) Vivid red. High-pitched red fruit, floral pastille and Asian spice aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a deeper cola nuance with aeration. Stains the palate with sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors that are sharpened by a blood orange flourish and lifted by a spine of minerality. Plays power off finesse with a deft hand and closes with impressive energy, focus and mineral-driven persistence.”

The average price is $32

Nicolas-Jay Red Vinyl Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special
Winery Note “The 2015 Red Vinyl release from Nicolas-Jay begins with effusive fruit, black currant and cherry pie, with a faint smoky element. The acidity in this wine is integrated and allows the softer, fleshy qualities to dominate on the palate. This easy-drinking composition is reinforced by brilliant tannin–an expression of the Willamette Valley vineyards we work with. The appealing fruit leads to a long and juicy finish.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Nicolas Jay Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($69.95) $64 special
Winery Note “The 2015 Willamette Valley is a rich, tight and expansive red with remarkable balance. It starts on the nose, with black cherry fruit aromas underscored by hints of smoke, fresh loamy soil, violet and cassis. On the palate, bright, almost juicy fruit is supported by intense minerality and phenomenal length. It is structural and fine, with resolved tannins and subdued density resulting in a great complexity. If consumed in the next few years, the wine will benefit from a gentle decanting one or two hours before serving. This wine will also age beautifully for 15-20 years in bottle.”

California

Corison Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($99.95) $88 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “A deep, inky wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is endowed with serious depth. Here the flavors are unusually dark and intense, with plenty of blue and black stone fruits. Graphite, cloves and licorice contribute to an overall impression of gravitas. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet needs time in bottle to truly shine. Hints of violet, lavender and plum add the final shades of nuance. All of the signatures of the vintage come through beautifully. The translucent, mineral-laced finish is especially appealing. Frankly, it’s hard to put the glass down.”
James Suckling 93 points “A very minerally and subtle wine with blueberry, blackberry and lemon rind. Some saltiness. Full to medium body, balanced and refined. Delicious already but shows wonderful tension and finesse. Drink or hold.”

Mount Eden Vineyards ‘Domaine Eden’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2013 750ML ($39.95) $36 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Another gorgeous wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a huge overachiever in its price range. Inky dark red and blue-fleshed fruit, smoke, spices and licorice hit the palate as this exuberant, radiant Cabernet shows off its racy personality. There is more than enough plumpness to make the 2013 approachable young, but also enough density to drink well for a number of years. Graphite, smoke, licorice and black cherry jam infuse the super-expressive finish.”

France – Champagne

Nicolas Maillart Premier Cru Brut, Champagne 2007 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Spectator 91 points “Toasted almond and pastry dough notes lead the way in this creamy Champagne, with aromatic accents of spun honey, lemon preserves, beeswax, toasted cumin and clove spice emerging along with well-knit acidity on the finish. Drink now through 2024.” WS

France – Bordeaux

Chateau Bichon Cassignols ‘Le Petit Bichon’ Blanc, Graves 2015 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Winery note “[Translated] 70% Semillon with the rest Sauvignon blanc. This wine is vinified exclusively in vats to showcase the full fruity expression of the grapes. Its mineral and pear aromas and its vivacity develop pleasantly in the mouth. Drink young and serve as an aperitif or with seafood, grilled fish, vegetable terrines or cheese.”

Chateau de Bellevue, Lussac-Saint-Emilion 2010 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Importer notes “This exceptional red Bordeaux drinks well right away but will age impressively. It boasts deep, berry-fruit, silky Merlot from the clay and limestone soils of the right bank of the Garonne River. Organic”

Chateau Montrose, Saint-Estephe 2008 750ML ($179.95) $149 special
Robert Parker 95 points “One of the superstars of the vintage, this classic Montrose is not as showy or opulent as the 2010, 2009 or 2003, but it offers a dense purple color followed by gorgeously sweet black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with loamy, earthy, forest floor notes, a floral component and a long, full-bodied finish. The 2008 was fashioned from yields of 44 hectoliters per hectare which is slightly less than the 2010’s 45 hectoliters per hectare. Forget it for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 20+.”
James Suckling 95 points “The purity and precision in this wine is very exciting. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a long finish of currant and spice. Black tea and bark too. Better in 2020 but beautiful now. Decant before serving. (6/2016)”

Wine Spectator 92 points “This is pure, with cherry, black currant and spice flavors fused to a firm, dense structure. A graphite element emerges as this cruises to a long, gripping, spice-infused finish. Best from 2020 through 2030. 150 cases imported.”

Wine Spectator 92 points “There’s fine purity here, with cherry, raspberry, violet and iron flavors. Succulent yet taut, with dense, refined tannins. Shows fine balance and length, featuring bright fruit from start to finish. Best from 2018 through 2027. 100 cases imported.”

Domaine Gachot-Monot Cote de Nuits-Villages 2015 750ML ($37.95) $30.90 special

France – Rhone

Wine Advocate 87-90 points “Similar to the classic cuvee, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Girard is a custom blend for importer Peter Weygandt. Showing a touch darker fruit and possibly more concentration, it has building tannin and a solid finish. It has outstanding potential.”

Italy – Piedmont

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo ‘Agamium’ Colline Novaresi, Piedmont 2011 750ML ($21.95) $17 special
Importer note “Made entirely of Nebbiolo from three different estate vineyards, normally picked at the beginning of October and macerated with the skins for 6 days. Aged for 12 months in stainless steel, then another twelve months in 900L and 3,000L Slavonian oak barrels, almost all used. In effect this is declassified Ghemme, so the soils are morainic and the wine shows the same mineral character that the bigger wines do, just in a more forward form. Amazing value.”

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Breclemae, Ghemme DOCG 2006 750ML ($59.95) $46 special
Importer note “Made entirely of Nebbiolo grown in the hillside vineyard called ‘Collis Breclemae,’ picked in the second half of October. About two weeks of maceration with the skins, then the wine is aged for 36 months in used barrels ranging between 900 and 2800L. Very rocky soil, which presumably explains the very distinctive mineral character the wine shows. Very round tannins that remind me of 70% dark chocolate, not at all bitter, just savory; this will age brilliantly, but if I’m eating ribeye now I would drink this with it in a second. Really big wine with excellent balance.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Breclemae, Ghemme DOCG 2007 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 92+ points “The 2007 Ghemme Collis Breclamae shows the deeper, slightly wilder side of Ghemme. Game, smoke, licorice, cedar and tobacco are expressed with elements of burliness and rusticity. There is more than enough depth to fill out the wine’s broad shoulders. Still, what comes through most is the wine’s virile, imposing personality.” AG

Italy – Veneto

Masi Brolo di Campofiorin Oro Rosso Veronese IGT, Veneto 2013 750ML ($29.95) $19 special
Case-6 Masi Brolo di Campofiorin Oro Rosso Veronese IGT, Veneto 2013 750ML ($149.95) $99 special (that’s only $16.50/bottle!)
Importer notes “‘Brolo’ is equivalent to the French ‘clos,’ a walled vineyard. This special selection of Campofiorin expresses the individual style of local Veronese varieties (particularly Corvina) and the original methods of appasimento and Masi’s double fermentation. This dry, rich, velvety, complex and elegant wine is aged in small oak barrels. Brolo di Campofiorin vineyards are located in Valgatara di Marano, in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, where grapes for the original Campofiorin are grown, with very deep alluvial soil on eocenic limestone. Like Campofiorin, this wine is produced using Masi’s double fermentation system. Wine from fresh grapes undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation with selected yeasts. The end of November, the wine is re-fermented, with 30% of semi-dried Corvina grapes. Malolactic follows fermentation. The wine is aged in 600-liter ‘fusti veronesi’: Allier and Slavonian oak barrels, before a period in bottle.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Masi Costasera Riserva, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2009 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Wine Spectator 92 points “Plush and mouthwatering, this layers sweet and savory flavors of black raspberry puree, fragrant leather, sun-dried cherry, cocoa powder, wild herb and olive. A well-structured red for the cellar, but accessible now, presenting a long, smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2029.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2015 750ML ($39.95) $30.90 special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2015 Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese is clear, piquant and salty on the nose, with great purity and a lovely flintiness framing the ripe yellow apple and grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pretty, complex and salty Spätlese with generous but delicate fruit and lingering mineral tension and salinity. Grown on the same soil as the Leistenberg Kabinett (grey slate) but from a fully south-facing site, this is a perfect Spätlese terroir. Although this wine has just 9% alcohol, it is intense and complex and has 65 grams of residual sugar. It is a really full-bodied Riesling.”

Spain

Bodegas Nanclares ‘Alberto Nanclares’ Albarino, Rias Baixas 2015 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special
John Gilman 92+ points “The eponymous bottling of Albariño from Alberto Nanclares is also produced from vines ranging from thirty to sixty years of age, but there are only five parcels utilized for this cuvée, all located in the same small parish. The wine is raised differently than the Dandelión, as half the cuvée is fermented in stainless and half in two thousand liter, old foudre, with the time spent on the fine less for this bottling more than a year. The 2015 Nanclares bottling offers up a superb aromatic blend of fresh lime, tart pear, ocean breeze, complex, salty soil tones, gentle smokiness and a topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and zesty, with a lovely core, fine focus and grip and outstanding backend energy on the still youthful and very, very long finish. The time spent in old foudre gives the wine a rounder palate impression than in the Dandelión, without sacrificing any of the cut and race of classical Albariño. 2018-2030.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Bodegas Nanclares ‘Soverribas de Nanclares’, Rias Baixas 2015 750ML ($37.95) $33 special
John Gilman 94 points “The Soverribas bottling hails from a single small vineyard in the village of Meaño, planted on clay and granite, and this cuvée is fermented and raised in a twenty-two hundred liter, ten year-old foudre, with indigenous yeast fermentation and a full year on its fine lees prior to bottling. The 2015 Soverribas is the deepest and most complex of these three excellent Albariños from Señor Nanclares, offering up a fine bouquet of bread fruit, tart pear, complex soil tones, gentle leesiness, a touch of fresh almond, ocean breeze and a touch of orange peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, zesty and beautifully complex, with a great core, fine focus and grip and a very long, perfectly balanced and very intensely flavored finish. This is extremely easy to drink today, but it is still a puppy and a handful of years in the cellar are going to work their magic and produce a reference point bottle of Albariño! Can I order my clams now?”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best price is $36

Bodegas Muga ‘Prado Enea’ Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2009 750ML ($89.95) $69 special
Wine Advocate 96 points “The most classic cuvée was not produced in 2007 or 2008, so we jumped to the phenomenal 2009 Prado Enea. It was produced with grapes from cooler vineyards that enjoyed 20 extra days of slow ripening compared with warmer zones, which provided them with perfect ripeness and deep flavors. This blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% between Mazuelo and Graciano had an extended élevage, in this case no less than three years (alternating newer and older barrels). This is still a baby and I know Winemaker Jorge Muga would like to keep it in bottle for longer before selling it, but the commercial pressure is tremendous, as there has been no wine since 2006. The wine has 14.1% alcohol and a surprising 3.34 pH, especially considering 2009 was generally a warm and ripe year. But somehow this cuvée seems to work very well in ripe vintages. The wine feels even younger on the palate, and it still needs to develop some further complexity and the silky texture for which this wine is famous. There is good balance here and all the elements are in place for a nice development in bottle. In fact, it feels like one of the great recent vintages of Prado Enea. There will be no Prado Enea in 2012 and 2013 either, but it’s produced in 2010, 2014 (small quantities) and 2015. At this quality level, the price seems like a real bargain.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 95 points “(aged for 16 months in large French oak vats, followed by three years in 85 percent French and 15 percent American oak barrels and then held in bottle for three years before release) Brilliant ruby-red. Heady aromas of smoke-accented red berries, potpourri, incense and vanilla show superb clarity and pick up cedar and pipe tobacco nuances in the glass. Sweet, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated yet vibrant red currant, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that fan out steadily on the back half. A spicecake quality emerges on the impressively persistent, red-fruit- and floral-driven finish, which is given shape by smooth, harmonious tannins.”

Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2011 750ML ($49.95) $36 special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points “(aged for 26 months in French oak casks) Bright ruby. Fresh red berry, cherry, mocha and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of cola and vanilla. Intense black raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors deepen and pick up a sweet hint of mocha on the back half. The lively, emphatically fruity, impressively long finish displays very good finishing clarity; dusty, firming tannins lend shape and gentle grip.”
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Reserva Selección Especial, from a warmer and drier year compared with the average (as well as the previous harvest), has a similar blend as the regular Muga Reserva; it is 65% Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, and it was fermented in small vats with indigenous yeasts. The different varieties and grapes are fermented and aged separately, the first year in new oak and the second one in used barrels. 2011 is a powerful vintage for this cuvée, which now shows quite marked by toasty aromas. Warm vintages usually need longer in bottle to integrate the oak, but experience shows that it gets absorbed and in fact the evolution of this wine in bottle is very good. Even if the nose recommends to wait, the palate is very balanced, with remarkably ripe tannins for such warm year, which can sometime produce some harsh tannins. Not the case here, where the wine shows good elegance and balance. This is a very reliable cuvée, quite stable across vintages.”

Andy:
Le Petit Bichon Graves Blanc – Summer came early. We’d been bemoaning a lack of Bordeaux Blanc around the store when this delightful little summer white came in. Chateau Bichon-Cassignol offers up Le Petit Bichon Graves Blanc, a Semillon dominated (70% to 30% Sauvignon Blanc) white that is brightly colored and offers direct and delicious aromas of minerals and pear. If we’d had a cleaner, more delicious Graves Blanc this year, I certainly cannot remember it, especially at this price point. At $14, this will drink well all summer long. Serve it up with the freshest of salads with chevre, crawfish boils, sushi, picnic fare. Versatile and easy to enjoy.

Off the Beaten Path:

Bierzo Bliss

Raul Perez has emerged as one of the most exciting Spanish winemakers of the last few years.  He’s done it in an interesting way: not by making over-the-top big fruit and oak bombs, but rather by honing in on the terroirs in Galicia, a relatively unromantic vinicultural region.  Until the late 1990’s, when his mentor Alvaro Palacios started the Petalos/Descendientes project, most of the wines in the region were sold locally, often to pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

Since then, a number of new wineries have popped up, but most of them are in the Palacios mold—made from around the warm, Mediterranean-climate village of Corullon.  Perez, on the other hand, has tread a different path and focuses on wines made from Atlantic-influence climates in villages like Villadecanes or Cacabelos.  As a result, the wines tend to be impressive, but in an introspective, earthy way.

Winemaking plays a part in that, as well.  Perez prefers indigenous yeasts, neutral vessels and a lot of whole-cluster fermentation in his wine.  Citing the (unlikely) influence of Bartolo Mascarello, he performs a long post-fermentation maceration on his wines as well, which give the wines powerful, yet elegant, structures that complement food exceptionally well.  When you roll all of this together, you understand why Perez is making waves—these are unique and exceptional wines that show off terroirs previously unexplored by serious winemakers.  We’re happy to have scored three of the bottlings he makes and wanted to highlight them here today.

Arriving June 9th

La Vizcaina El Rapolao, Bierzo 2014 750ML ($37.95) $29.80 pre-arrival special
VinopolNote “This is from Raul’s highest altitude vineyard, with a northeastern exposure and the most influence of the Atlantic ocean.  As a result the wines have long hang times and can be picked late (this is often picked last of the Vizcaina wines) with great freshness and character.  Stunning stuff that we can’t say enough about.”

Raul Perez Ultreia Mencia, Bierzo 2014 750ML ($31.95) $24.80 pre-arrival special
VinopolNote “This is the flagship wine of the Ultreia project and is something that any lover of cool-climate red wine should pay attention to. Mostly Mencia, with a few other grapes that accumulated in this part of the Camino de Santiago over the years discreetly blended in, this is a wine that speaks of Bierzo in urgent, though quiet, tones.”

Raul Perez Ultreia Saint Jacques, Bierzo 2015 750ML ($21.95) $21.95) $17.80 pre-arrival special
VinopolNote “This is the entry level wine that Perez makes and is a great introduction to wines of Bierzo without the Palacios flash.  Pure fruit married to an attractive earthiness and minerality, it’s a great snapshot of the house style.”

Dehu ‘La Rue des Noyers’, Champagne NV (2012) 750ML ($119.95) Was $99, Now $89
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Benoît Déhu’s NV Extra Brut La Rue des Noyers is a 100% Meunier from a biodynamically farmed 1.7 hectare plot in Fossoy with dark limestone soils. Fermented and aged for ten months in used 228 liter barrels but with “no malolactic, no racking, no filtering, no cold stabilization and no fining,” says Benoît Déhu, when he presented me his wine at the presentation of the Origines Champagne group in Château de Pierry earlier this year. “We produce our wines like our colleagues in Burgundy.” It had two different Cuvées of this wine. Their first was entirely based on the 2011 vintage and was disgorged in June 2014 with a minimal dosage of one gram per liter. It is an impressively deep, intense and full-bodied Champagne that displays ripe fruit and slightly smoky flavors on the nose; it is very pure, complex and well structured on the palate. This stunningly powerful and persistent Champagne is surely made for a long distance run. The second wine is the successor and based on vintage 2012, but disgorged with no dosage. This is a very delicate and elegant release with a superbly refined mousse. However, it is also straight, firm and perhaps even finer than the 2011.”

Winery Notes “The Gros Manseng produces fleshier, more ample wines with fruity apricot and pear aromas. It is a lively wine, but not to excess, with a persistent final. It may be kept for several years and should be drunk chilled, at a temperature of 50-53°”

Michelini Bros Superuco Calcareo ‘Granito de Tupungato’ Malbec, Tupungato, Argentina 2013 750ML ($49.95) Was $39, Now $33
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2013 Calcáreo Granito de Tupungato starts with lactic notes followed by ripe plum and ripe skin aromas from grapes grown at higher altitude, closer to the sun. It is a bit wild. The palate is tremendously mineral, with a chalky texture and incredible length. The tannins are ultra-fine and the wine is compact, very harmonious. This is the more austere and mineral of the three. Awesome value!”
James Suckling 96 points “This is so sexy and polished. Full-bodied, yet refined and long. Seamless and ethereal. Drink or hold.”
